Powerful Indonesian earthquake kills 70 By ZAKKI HAKIM, Associated Press Writer MAR 06,07

PADANG, Indonesia - A powerful earthquake crumpled houses across a large swath of western Indonesia on Tuesday, killing at least 70 people and injuring hundreds, authorities said, predicting that the toll would rise. The magnitude 6.3 quake struck on Sumatra island and was felt as far away as neighboring Malaysia and Singapore, where some tall buildings were evacuated. It was followed by several strong aftershocks.Women were crying out in terror. We all just fled as quickly as we could, said Alpion, a welder in the seaside town of Padang who uses a single name. Along with thousands of others, he was running to higher ground, fearing a tsunami that never came.

Indonesia straddles one of the world's most seismically violent zones and has been hit by a string of natural disaster in recent years, the most deadly being the 2004 tsunami that killed 160,000 people on Sumatra's northern tip.Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi told reporters in Jakarta that at least 70 people had been killed by the quake, which hit the island's western coast. The worst-affected area appeared to be Solok, a bustling town close to the epicenter where two children were killed by falling debris on a school playground.Dozens of buildings had been destroyed and hundreds others damaged, local police chief Lt. Col. Budi Sarwono said. TV footage showed a flattened three-story home and thick cracks in the road.Hospitals were overflowing with patients, many of them with broken bones and cuts. Scores were laid out on cots where they were given emergency care, said Sarwono.

So far we have recovered 19 bodies and hundreds of injured people, he said. The two hospitals are overwhelmed with victims. At one hospital in nearby Padang, panicked doctors and nurses fled into the streets, startled patients limping behind, according to Metro TV.Local government spokesman Hasrul Piliang said the number of dead would likely rise because tolls from remote areas were still being collected and there were reports of others trapped under debris. The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor struck 20 miles below Solok. It was followed by several strong aftershocks, one measuring 6.0.The tremor was felt in Singapore, 265 miles from the quake's epicenter, forcing the evacuation of several older office buildings, TV station Channel NewsAsia reported. In Malaysia's southern coastal city of Johor, citizens fled offices, buildings and shopping centers, eyewitnesses said.Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

In addition to the 2004 tsunami, earthquake-spawned waves also killed nearly 5,000 on Java island last year.Tuesday's quake was about 660 miles west of the country's capital Jakarta.

Dozens of cars crash near Barrie, closing highway
Blowing snow causes shutdown of major highways across southern Ontario
Monday, March 5, 2007 CBC News

Pileups involving more than 75 vehicles closed Highway 400 south of Barrie on Monday afternoon, as blowing snow and powerful wind gusts caused accidents across Southern Ontario.Ontario Provincial Police Const. Sally Stewart said police are aware of at least one life-threatening injury and several serious injuries, but no fatalities so far.Sometimes we give tips about winter driving but when there's zero visibility, there really isn't a safe way to drive. OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley We have a lot of drifting snow and high winds today, Stewart said. It makes [snow] very loose and therefore the wind can pick it up and throw it around, which causes complete whiteouts.Police closed ramps onto the highway in the area of the pileups as emergency crews worked to free people from the wreckage. The northbound pileup happened near Highway 88. The southbound pileup was further north, near Highway 89.The northbound accident, involving more than 30 cars, three trucks and two coach buses, was the most serious, according to CBC reporter Steven D'Souza. A truck driver and a van driver were taken to hospital with critical injuries. At least 35 others are in hospital with minor injuries.Sections of Highway 400 near the accident scene are expected to remain closed until Tuesday morning.

It's like driving in milk

Hundreds of minor accidents were reported across southern Ontario as snow and winds gusting up to 100 km/h pummelled the region, hitting areas along Lake Huron and Georgian Bay the hardest.More than a dozen major highways across southern Ontario were closed because of the blowing snow, with visibility as low as half a kilometre in some spots.OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley suggested motorists avoid driving west of Highway 400, saying conditions are fluctuating between sunshine and whiteouts that make it feel like they're driving in milk.Sometimes we give tips about winter driving but when there's zero visibility, there really isn't a safe way to drive, Woolley said. The severe weather closed all county roads in Dufferin County, about 80 kilometres northwest of Toronto.Police asked drivers not to skirt blocked highways by taking back roads, warning there is little chance of being found if something happens on the less-travelled routes. It's really a dangerous situation starting to build and it's getting worse, said Woolley, adding another bad storm is headed for Ontario.

Threat of ice bombs closes Toronto
Tuesday Mar 6 08:56 AEDT (Reuters)

Toronto major streets are closed on fears that table-sized sheets of ice could shear off tall buildings and smash down on cars and pedestrians.Roads closed to traffic included parts of the Gardiner Expressway, an elevated freeway that leads to downtown Toronto, as well as part of King Street, the normally busy thoroughfare that is home to the Toronto Stock Exchange and Canada's financial district.Yellow tape kept even pedestrians indoors, leaving an eerie calm in the center of Canada's largest city. It's a situation where we had a mild December, then cold in mid-January, and over the last week or so a good blast of snow and freezing rain, said Geoff Coulson, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

On top of some of those buildings, especially the ones with black roofs, it may be several degrees above zero. And when a piece of ice a couple metres (yards) across falls 30 floors it's like a bomb going off.CP-24 Television showed pictures of cars with smashed windshields from chunks of ice and said witnesses reported seeing ice slabs the size of a kitchen table flying off the sides of the soaring CN Tower. The ice is on the northeast side of the tower about 350 metres from the ground, said Irene Knight, the tower's manager of public relations. It's too dangerous to send anyone up to deal with it right now.The road closures snarled traffic during both morning and evening rush hours. Current weather conditions are presenting safety concerns, police said in a bland statement. The closures will remain in effect as long as there is a danger to public safety.A winter storm last Thursday dumped several centimetres of snow on Toronto and a night of rain turned that snow into icy porridge. Then the weather turned cold again, and the porridge turned back to ice, which started melting and falling from buildings.

Numbing cold in the Northeast Mark Avery, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel MAR 06,07

Northeast

The Northeast continues to deal with the leftovers of an Alberta clipper that brought snow and wind on Monday across the region. A few light snow showers or flurries are possible today in the Northeast, but the biggest impact will be the bitter cold and wind. Some of the coldest temperatures of the winter season (when compared to average temperatures) are possible today in the Northeast. Tomorrow, another clipper will affect the region, bringing a chance of snow mainly to the Mid-Atlantic and bringing a messy afternoon/evening commute to Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia Wednesday evening. A few snow showers will linger in far Northern New England on Thrusday before skies dry on Friday. Another chance of rain and snow moves into the region over the weekend. After bitter cold temperatures over the next three days, temperatures moderate toward Friday and the weekend with above average highs expected across the region this weekend.

Midwest

The Upper Midwest will be affected by an Alberta clipper today into tonight. The heaviest snows are expected over northern Minnesota into the Great Lakes. This system quickly moves out of the region, with a few snow showers possible in the Upper Ohio Valley Wednesday morning as the system leaves the Midwest. Thursday will give the region a break before the next system moves in and brings a chance of rain, with some snow near the Great Lakes, on Friday. The weekend looks to be mainly wet across most of the region, with the Northern Plains being the driest. Temperatures will be warming as the week progresses as well: temperatures over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes are expected to be below average today through Thursday, but be above average region-wide by the weekend.

West

The Pacific Northwest and Northern California coasts will see the chance of rain returning tonight after enjoying a mostly dry day today. This system will bring valley rain and mountain snows across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies tomorrow. A steady stream of moisture off of the Pacific will keep the chances of rain going through the weekend in the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, the Southwest will remain bone dry and warm. High pressure is expected to move over the Great Basin later this week and bring potential Santa Ana conditions to Southern California for Thursday through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to remain above seasonal averages across the region, with a brief cool down in the Northwest on Thursday.

South

The South remains relatively quiet today. The dry conditions are prompting red flag warnings due to the high fire danger over much of Florida and Georgia, as well as South Central Texas. Oklahoma and the Red River Valley of Texas also have an increased fire danger today due to breezy south winds expected. A few showers are possible on the East Coast of Florida on Wednesday, with a better chance of rain coming on Saturday and Sunday. Rain returns to the lower Mississippi Valley and Southern Plains on Friday and Saturday, with Saturday being a wet day across most of the South. Temperatures are expected to be near or above average across most of the region through the weekend, with Virginia and the Carolinas being below average today, warming tomorrow, and then briefly cooling off Thursday and Friday. Warmer than average temperatures should prevail over the weekend.

Families flee active volcano in Ecuador Mon Mar 5, 9:42 PM ET

QUITO, Ecuador - Authorities evacuated about 100 families from the slopes of a volcano in central Ecuador which began showering villages with flaming rocks and ash last month. Firefighters, police and civil defense officials conducted a voluntary evacuation because of the Tungurahua volcano's intensifying activity, Jorge Arteaga, director of Ecuador's Red Cross rescue squad, told Radio Quito on Monday. The 16,575-foot volcano, whose name means throat of fire in the Quechua language, shot a 1.2-mile plume of ash into the sky on Feb. 12.Santiago Arellano, a technician at Ecuador's Geophysics Institute, told The Associated Press that Tungurahua is registering its most intense activity since it erupted last August, killing four people and destroying or severely damaging nearly 5,000 homes.Arellano said Monday that an eruption is not imminent, but warned the volcano's activity could increase within hours. The volcano is located about 85 miles south of the capital of Quito.

Palestinian heads fail to agree on gov't By DIAA HADID, Associated Press Writer MAR 05,07

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A daylong gunbattle between rival Palestinian factions raged in the streets of Gaza City Monday as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh again failed to agree on the formation of a unity government. Government spokesman Ghazi Hamad said there would be another meeting tomorrow, where the two men planned to discuss the crucial issue of who would be interior minister, controlling security forces. The two leaders are negotiating the basis of an accord hammered out last month in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, laying out the framework of a government bringing Abbas' Fatah into partnership with Haniyeh's Hamas.Abbas hopes that bringing his more moderate Fatah back into the government would placate the West, which cut off aid to the Palestinian regime when Hamas took over a year ago after winning an election. However, the West insists that any Palestinian government must recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept previous peace accords. Hamas rejects the conditions, and the Mecca accord falls short of meeting them.

The U.S. State Department said Monday that full funding of a proposed $86 million in security assistance for the Palestinian Authority hinges on whether officials receive assurances that none of the funds can benefit Hamas.Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, European countries and Israel.Haniyeh has another two weeks to present the unity government, according to Palestinian law. His original Hamas-led government resigned to allow formation of a Hamas-Fatah team. Abbas has said the main goal is to stop armed conflicts that have killed more than 130 Palestinians in recent months. On Monday, members of a Hamas militia engaged in a daytime gunbattle with Fatah-allied security officers in the worst outbreak of internal violence since the Mecca accord was signed, security officials said. The gunbattle broke out in Gaza City when Hamas and Fatah loyalists argued over who had control of a nearby training compound, they said. The security forces demanded the Hamas militiamen leave the area, but they refused, saying it fell under the control of the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry, security officials said. There were no injuries.

In two other incidents, unknown assailants fired shots at the house and car of a senior security officer who has had past problems with Hamas, security officials said. Shots were also fired at a police headquarters, and police returned fire, the security officials said. Also, security officials said they believed hardline Muslims were behind the bombing of a music shop in the southern town of Khan Younis early Monday, following a similar attack on an Internet cafe on Sunday. Another Internet cafe owner was also briefly kidnapped. Nobody was injured in the attacks. While there were no claims of responsibility, security officials suspect extremist Muslims trying to enforce strict moral conduct were behind the attacks. Hardline Muslims have said youths download pornography from Internet sites, are distracted from prayer by music and buy condoms and hallucinogenic drugs from some pharmacies. Since October, at least 20 such shops have been targeted.

Poll: Americans More Pro Israel, More Polarized by Gil Ronen MAR 06,07

A solid majority of Americans (58%) say their sympathies lie with the Israelis and only 20% say their sympathies are more with the Arabs of the Palestinian Authority, according to Gallup's annual World Affairs survey. Americans' sympathy towards Israel is holding at the same levels as in 2005 and 2006.

A comparison between Gallup polls conducted in the 1990s and those conducted since 2000 shows that the average level of sympathy for Israelis has risen, long term, from 41% to 53%, while the average sympathy for the Arab side of the conflict rose from 13% to 16%. The question posed was simply, In the Middle East situation, are your sympathies more with the Israelis or more with the Palestinians?

Gallup's experts explain the results as clearly showing that as Americans have moved out of the no preference columns (on the Israeli-Arab issue), they have moved disproportionately into the pro-Israeli column.Public preferences for Israelis in last year's February 2006 survey were at their highest since the 1991 Gulf War a survey that showed a slight dip in sympathies toward the Palestinian Authority. The recent shifts may be attributed to the events preceding them, namely Ariel Sharon's hospitalization and Hamas' election victory. The same general pattern is seen in a separate set of questions asking Americans to give their opinions of various countries. The total percentage of Americans viewing Israel favorably fell slightly between 2006 and 2007 - from 68% to 63% - while favorable views of Palestine, as the Palestinian Authority was presented in the poll, increased slightly, from 11% to 16%. However, between the two, Israel enjoys the much more positive image in the United States.

Americans are more pro-Israeli in their views today than they were 10 and 20 years ago, but, they are also more polarized generally. Today, a combined 78% of Americans favor one side or the other, while the remaining 22% express no partiality. Fourteen years ago, 43% of Americans had no preference in the dispute. BBC Releases Partial Information on Poll: Israel Deemed Very NegativeMeanwhile, a BBC World Service poll shows that a majority of people in 27 countries believes that Israel and Iran lead the list of countries seen as having a mainly negative influence in the world. The BBC staff did not disclose which countries were on the list and how many of them were Arab. The BBC admitted that Israel was most unpopular in Arab countries. Israel and Iran, each of which received a 56% negative rating in the BBC survey, are closely followed by the United States (51%) and North Korea (48%). The poll asked 28,000 respondents in 27 countries to rate a dozen countries, as well as the European Union, in terms of whether they have a positive or negative influence. Canada, Japan and the EU are viewed most positively in the survey.

Leftists to Build Illegal Arab Houses on State Land
16 Adar 5767, March 6, '07

(IsraelNN.com) Israeli leftists, together with foreign PLO supporters, plan to rebuild illegal Arab homes built on state-owned lands in the southern Hevron hills and plant trees on areas near the Gvaot Olam and Chavat Gilad (Gilad Farm) communities. The leftists have encouraged local Arabs to bring claims to the lands to sympathetic Israeli courts. When they obtain a court order, they plant trees or destroy Jewish crops, and when they are ruled against (as is the case in the Hevron Hills), they violently block the destruction and help the Arab illegally rebuild. An hour ago that the powers that be ruled in favor of a farmer from Hares. Twice last week we didn't succeed in planting on his lands next to the settlement of Revava, writes Rabbis For Human Rights rabbi-director Arik Ascherman. He went on to call upon activists to join Arabs from the Samaria village of Yanoun Wednesday in planting on land claimed by Gvaot Olam founder Avri Ran. Aschman, together with Ta'ayush, ISM, The Israeli Committee Against [Arab] House Demolitions, Gush Shalom, Coalition of Women for Peace, Machsom Watch, Yesh Gvul, Peace Now and Meretz (of Be’er Sheva) are calling upon leftists and foreign activists to prepare for a prolonged struggle in the Hevron Hills. Land Mines Lobbed Into Israel From Syria
by Gil Ronen MAR 06,07

Ten anti-personnel mines were discovered by an IDF patrol along the border with Syria in the Golan Heights on Saturday. The mines were not concealed or covered and IDF experts determined that they had been thrown over the border fence between Syria and Israel around midday Saturday. It is not clear who threw the mines into Israel or why. Syrian soldiers, terrorists and shepherds have been mentioned as the possible culprits. An IDF engineering unit was dispatched to neutralize the mines.
Israel planned to file an official complaint with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which is deployed in Syria to oversee the 33-year-old ceasefire with Israel. An unnamed IDF officer said Sunday that responsibility for the event rests with the Syrian government, even if it was a local initiative that did not get an official green light from Damascus. The Syrian military has moved military infrastructure, including fuel depots, closer to the border with Israel.Military sources revealed that the mines were actually Israeli mines that the IDF had planted east of the security fence, but still within Israeli territory. Ten of these mines were taken out of the ground and lobbed over the fence. Six were found on the dirt road used by IDF patrols, north of Golan Brook in the southern part of the Golan Heights.

One possibility being looked into is that the Resistance Committees for Freeing the Golan Heights were involved in the incident. This Syrian guerrilla organization announced its inception in the summer of 2006, and said it would use Syrian terrorists to wage a guerrilla war in the Golan. The group also claimed that it was holding Israeli soldier Guy Hever, who went missing in the Golan on August 17, 1997. The Jerusalem Post reported on Friday that Syria has spent the past few months moving infrastructures to its southern border - and constructing additional infrastructures there as well - for the purpose of launching a war against Israel. According to defense officials, the Syrian military has moved military infrastructure, including fuel depots, closer to the border with Israel, and the Syrians have built structures that could serve as weapons storage facilities and military bases. The Syrian army is restricted in the number of troops it is allowed to deploy along the border.

Wintry Weather Returns: Nasty Roads, Colder Air
Monday, March 5, 2007 07:57 AM - WBEN Newsroom

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - If your commute takes you down roads that are susceptible to blowing and drifting snow, you could face some of the worst driving conditions of the season today.Snowfall of a few inches will combine with very strong winds to send snow whipping across roads and piling up in commuter lanes. Plows have been out, and will continue to be out throughout the day, but the strong winds immediately blow the snow back, and will create visibility problems, as well. The National Weather Service has issued a blowing and drifting snow ADVISORY until 7-this evening for the entire Western New York region. We're also in line for some very cold air coming out of Canada later today. That blast of arctic air will produce temperatures in the single digits, and wind chills below zero. The region is also under a wind chill ADVISORY starting at midnight tonight.

REBUILT 3RD TEMPLE

REVELATION 11:1-2
1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

DANIEL 9:27
27 And he( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant with many for one
week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

God has always dealt with Israel in 7's, it just makes sense the last dealing with Israel and the World will be a 7 yr treaty. God rested from creation on the 7TH DAY. Every 7TH YEAR Israel is suppose to rest the land. And the 7X7=49 YRS and the jubilee is the 50TH YEAR.

Now the scriptures that a week in Israel history is 7YEARS.

Heres the scripture 1 week = 7 yrs

Genesis 29:27-29
27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

Isn"t this interesting it comes from the same Person whos name was changed to Israel,(JACOB) and Israel and Jerusalem is the places dealt with in Daniel 9:24-27.

GENESIS 32:27-28
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Renew animal sacrifices on Mount says radical rabbi MAR 05,07

Member of Sanhedrin says sacrifices were not possible when the people of Israel were in the Diaspora, but now they are. Adds: Jerusalem Temple should be rebuilt, Israeli government standing in our way Yaakov Lappin / Israel News

Animal sacrifices should be renewed on the Temple Mount, a member of the radical Sanhedrin organization told Ynetnews. In ancient Israel and Judea, the Sanhedrin served as the highest court in the land, and was made up of 71 top judges. Now, a group of 71 fringe rabbis say they have reformed the group, although the organization has received no recognition from Israel's official religious authorities. In the Torah there are around 200 commandments dealing with animal sacrifices, said Rabbi Dov Stein, of the Sanhedrin organization. The Torah of Israel demands animal sacrifices.

When the people of Israel were in the Diaspora, it couldn’t be done. But now, there is the supreme institution, the Sanhedrin, made up of experts, and it can be done. The new Sanhedrin, like the old, will educate the people of Israel on how to keep and safeguard the Torah.

Democracy was not invented today

Stein vowed that we will try to carry out animal sacrifices on the Temple Mount this Passover, as commanded by the Torah.Asked if his organization sought to rebuild the third Temple, Stein's answer was unequivocal. We want to establish the Temple again. Unfortunately, standing in our way is a hostile regime, the Israeli government, and rabbis who for political interest don't want this to happen.Stein even suggested that Muslims would agree to the project, saying: The Omar Mosque (the Dome of the Rock), built by Khalif Omar, was actually intended to safeguard the site for the Jews. Islam hasn't always been so hostile. Despite its hatred and massacres against us, Islam sees in Judaism a source and a guide. I think the moment will come that Muslims understand the need to build the Temple and go along with us.Stein outlined his plan for Israel, calling for a king to be appointed democratically. Democracy was not invented today, the king is elected from a list of candidates. A senior judge, as was done during the days of the judges, can also be appointed, he added.

However, such practices ended 2000 years ago, Rabbi Doniel Hartman was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. Around that time, animal sacrifice, as a mode of religious worship, stopped for Jews, Christians and Muslims, said the rabbi from the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, according to AP. Moving back in that direction is not progress, he added. According to mainstream Jewish thought, animal sacrifices must not be carried out outside of Temple, which itself cannot be rebuilt by human endeavor, but will be rebuilt upon the arrival of the messiah.

Birthday declaration puts Merkel to EU constitution test
05.03.2007 - 09:28 CET | By Mark Beunderman

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - German chancellor Angela Merkel is facing the first real test of her efforts to push a revised EU constitution as she seeks to convince EU leaders this week to include a reference to a new treaty in the EU's 50th anniversary declaration. Ms Merkel is likely to raise the constitutional issue during a dinner with EU counterparts on Thursday evening (8 March) where she will outline her ideas for the so-called Berlin declaration to be signed by EU leaders and institutions on 25 March. The two to three page declaration - which will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1957 Treaty of Rome laying the foundation for the current EU - is set to consist of three main parts, on European history, European values and the current challenges facing the union. But the German EU presidency
also wants to conclude the document with a fourth element, a paragraph which would call upon EU member states to find a solution to the political impasse following the rejection of the EU constitution by French and Dutch voters in 2005.

The question of what we need in terms of institutions in order to go forward with the union is the crucial issue for Berlin here, EU diplomats said. In a consultation round with member states' so-called sherpas - government appointees for confidential talks with Berlin on the EU constitution - it emerged that Ms Merkel wants member states to commit themselves in the anniversary text to deadlines for both the agreement of a re-negotiated constitution text and its ratification. German Europe minister Guenther Gloser said last week a re-negotiated constitution would have to be agreed by the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008, so there would be a long enough time to ratify by the European elections in 2009.But language on a constitutional timetable is opposed by the UK, Poland and the Netherlands, which seek far-reaching changes to the EU constitution and dislike the idea of a fast-moving constitutional revival process. London, Warsaw, The Hague as well as Paris would also oppose any wording suggesting that the EU constitution should form the basis of a new EU treaty - a philosophy promoted by the 18 member states which already ratified the constitution. I don't think there is an agreement among member states on a sort of bridge at the end of the Berlin declaration to the EU constitution. I rather expect a reference to the coming willingness of the member states to work further towards a treaty settlement, Polish sherpa Marek Cichocki told EUobserver. EU diplomats said however that the divisions over the issue could be fudged by vague language such as that used by EU leaders in conclusions last June, where they said that they would continue the reform process taking the necessary steps to that effect before 2009. A French contact adding that Paris would probably agree to terms like institutional settlement.

Euro, Christian heritage

The constitution is not the only cause of division over the birthday declaration. Thursday's dinner is also expected to cover other outstanding issues surrounding the birthday text – on the euro, the union's social dimension and some values-related issues. Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said last month that he would like the euro currency to get a mention as one of the great successes of European construction - a proposal disliked by the UK and Sweden which are outside the eurozone.A social-economic discussion over the document has also emerged, with nine member states including France, Italy and Spain recently issuing an open declaration calling for more promotion of social Europe. We thought it might feed into the discussion around the Berlin declaration, said a French official, with free-market states such as the Czech Republic and the UK however likely to resist too much social language. Meanwhile, Poland is pushing for a reference to Europe's Christian heritage - something which Warsaw failed to obtain in the 2004 EU constitution text but for which it now sees a second chance.

Maybe it would be easier to have this accepted in the Berlin declaration which will have no legal status, than in a preamble of a legally binding treaty, Poland's sherpa said. It poses a difficulty for us to have this included in a public political document, a diplomat from secularist France reacted. With member states so far wanting a whole wish-list of issues to be included in the declaration, the text risks becoming too long, some diplomats warned. Once you start with two pages and then everyone starts adding in, you will soon end up with three, said one source. It is likely that the first drafts of the declaration will emerge from Berlin only after Ms Merkel has tested the atmosphere at Thursday's dinner, officials said.

Abbas accuses EU of discriminating against PA, being pro-Israel
By Akiva Eldar, Haaretz Correspondent Mon Mar 05,07

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas accused the European Union on Sunday of
discriminating against the Palestinians, and of fostering an unjust, pro-Israel approach. He went on to complain to the EU of a series of provocative and illegal Israeli actions. In an unusually harsh letter from Dr. Rafiq Husseini, Abbas' chief of staff, to German Foreign Minister Frank Walter-Steimeier, the Palestinian leadership complained of several instances in which Israel has allegedly violated its prior commitments, including the road map. Husseini noted in his letter to Steimeier - current president of the European Council - the reports of Israel's intention to build a new Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem, and the construction of a new Jerusalem District police headquarters beyond the Green line. At a time when the Palestinian people are at the threshold of a historic national consensus... such Israeli actions only serve to derail efforts to support forces of moderation, the letter reads. It also lists the IDF's incursion into Nablus last week, as well as the archaeological excavation near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Husseini suggests that despite Israel's violations and its refusal to participate in dialogue with the Palestinians, it enjoys close relations and financial ties with the EU, as opposed to the Palestinian Authority, which is under an international embargo. The letter calls to end this glaring injustice, and to adopt a more balanced approach by the Council of Ministers and the international community.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was expected to visit Brussels in advance of the EU meeting scheduled for Monday, in an attempt to convince the Europeans to adhere to the embargo for as long as the Hamas government refuses to renounce terror and recognize Israel as well as agreements signed with it. Officials in Jerusalem are concerned about possible erosion in the European Union regarding the embargo, as reflected in recent announcements by several European governments of their intention to reevaluate their stance following the Mecca agreement between Hamas and Fatah.

DOCTOR SAMUEL DOCTORIAN ANGEL ONE
Then the angel said, Financial crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world.

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Asian stocks tumble as yen surges
March 5, 2007

SINGAPORE (Reuters) Asia's battered stock markets tumbled again on Monday, as a global sell-off that began last week gathered fresh steam, with Japanese shares sliding more than 3 percent as a surging yen hammered exporters such as Toyota. The yen hit three-month highs against the dollar and the euro as investors rushed to close out risky trades and pay off the cheap yen loans that financed them.

Major European markets are expected to open down around 2 percent on Monday, financial bookmakers said. Britain's FTSE 100 is expected to open 1.8 percent lower, while Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 are expected to open down 2 and 2.2 percent, respectively.

If New York continues to slide and the yen continues to strengthen at this pace, there is no bottom in sight for Japan, said Kirby Daley, a strategist at brokerage Fimat in Tokyo.A near 9 percent slump in China's main stock index last Tuesday, combined with worries about stalling U.S. growth, sparked a wave a selling in world equity markets, many of which had been trading around record highs.

Australian stocks fell 2.3 percent to a seven-week closing low, erasing all their gains for 2007, with the world's largest miner, BHP Billiton, dropping 2.9 percent.Share indexes in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore lost between 3 and 4 percent and South Korea's benchmark fell 2.7 percent.

This is not like September 11, when there was a clear issue, so the sell-off was reasonable, said Lim Chang-gue, a fund manager at Samsung Investment Trust Management in Seoul.Something bad seems to be happening, but there is no one clear reason. It's this unknown that is making it worse so people are just selling out.Fears about the health of the global economy knocked more than 1 percent off oil prices, while Japanese government bond and U.S. Treasuries futures rose to around three-month highs, as investors fled stocks and commodities in search of safer assets. The yen rose across the board, with sterling plunging as much as 2 percent and other major currencies more than 1 percent, as market players unwound bets against the Japanese currency. The so-called carry trade, in which investors fund the purchase of higher-yielding -- and riskier -- assets with borrowing in the low-yielding yen, had driven the yen to a four-year low against the dollar in late January. The situation has changed now, with volatility no longer low to support the carry trades, and the unwinding of long positions in riskier assets spurred by the global stock market plunge is continuing, said a bond dealer at a Japanese trust bank. The dollar tumbled to a three-month low at 115.40 yen, before trimming losses slightly to trade around 115.55 yen by 0550 GMT. The euro bought around 152.25 down 1.2 percent, having fallen as low as 151.75 yen.

Yen worry

Tokyo's Nikkei fell below 17,000 for the first time in nearly two months to end down 3.3 percent, its biggest one-day percentage loss since June last year and its lowest close in 2007.The real worry is the currency, said Masayoshi Okamoto, head of dealing at Jujiya Securities.Toyota has assumed an exchange rate of 115 yen to the dollar for the fourth quarter. While we're already close to that, the thing is that investors were buying Toyota on the assumption the exchange level would be around 120 yen.Toyota, the world's most profitable car maker, fell 3.2 percent. Cameras and copiers maker Canon dropped 2.1 percent and Sony shed 2.9 percent. A stronger yen tends to hurt exporters because it erodes the value of their overseas sales.MSCI's broadest index of Asian shares outside Japan was down 3.7 percent at 0550 GMT.A measure of emerging Asian markets fell 4.1 percent, after diving 5.4 percent last week, and an index of Hong Kong-listed shares in mainland China firms, or H-shares, fell 5.3 percent, led by financials such as China Life

In the Japanese government bond market, lead March futures were up 0.44 point at 135.26, climbing towards a three-month high of 135.44 hit last week. The benchmark 10-year yield fell 4.5 basis points to 1.620 percent.A growing view that recent falls in share prices may not be just a temporary correction is giving the JGB market support, said Masuhisa Kobayashi, chief JGB strategist at Barclays Capital.Investors were cautiously hoping for the equities markets to steady this week but the Asian markets have continued to fall, so that's making people nervous, said Dariusz Kowalczyk, an analyst at Hong-Kong based CFC Seymour Ltd.Gold eased to around $640.80 an ounce, after sliding nearly 3 percent on Friday, when currency investors sold the precious metal to pay for losses in other markets.Reuters.

BIOLOGICAL WAR-FEAR
Syria ready with bio-terror if U.S. hits Iran
Damascus reportedly hiding WMD among commercial pharmaceuticals
Dr Jerome R. Corsi - WorldNetDaily.com - MAR 05,07

An American biodefense analyst living in Europe says if the U.S. invades Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions, Syria is ready to respond with weapons of mass destruction – specifically biological weapons. Syria is positioned to launch a biological attack on Israel or Europe should the U.S. attack Iran, Jill Bellamy-Dekker told WND. The Syrians are embedding their biological weapons program into their commercial pharmaceuticals business and their veterinary vaccine-research facilities. The intelligence service oversees Syria's bio-farm program and the Ministry of Defense is well interfaced into the effort.Bellamy-Decker currently directs the Public Health Preparedness program for the European Homeland Security Association under the French High Committee for Civil Defense. She anticipates a variation of smallpox is the biological agent Syria would utilize.

The Syrians are also working on orthopox viruses that are related to smallpox, Bellamy-Decker said, and it's a good way to get around international treaties against offensive biological weapons development. They work on camelpox as a cover for smallpox.According to the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, camelpox is a virus closely related to smallpox, that causes a severe and economically important disease in camels, but rarely, if ever, causes the disease in humans.

Bellamy-Decker also told WND the North Koreans were working closely with the Syrians on their biological weapons program. The Syrians have made some recent acquisitions in regard to their smallpox program from the DPRK, she explained. Right before the recent Lebanon war, the Syrians had a crash program in cryptosporidium.According to the Washington State Department of Health, cryptosporidium is a one-celled parasite that causes a gastrointestinal illness with symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and a low-grade fever. The symptoms can last for weeks and may result in weight loss and dehydration.

Because cryptosporidium is impervious to chlorine, Bellamy-Decker continued, you could infect the water supply by the bucket full of cryptosporidium, if you know where to get it. The resulting illness would put down a lot of civilians and military who might oppose you going into their country. The Syrians have a modus operandi of covert operations and deniability, she stressed, so biological weapons are absolutely perfect for them.WND asked Bellamy-Decker if the Syrians have any history of having used biological weapons.

I believe they are testing biological weapons right now, in Sudan, in the conflict in Darfur, she answered. There is credible information about flyover activity in Darfur, where little parachutes have been dropped down on the population. This is consistent with dispersal methods in bioweapons attacks. I've also seen evidence of bodies that have been recovered from Darfur that look as if they had been exposed to biological weapons.President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran met with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum Feb. 28 to exchange expressions of support and solidarity.

The Syrians now consider biological weapons as part of their arsenal, Bellamy-Decker said. The Syrian military is also beginning to plan the eventual integration of biological weapons in its tactical and strategic arsenals. She referenced an April 2000 article published by Syrian defense minister General Mustafa Talas, titled Biological (Germ) Warfare: A New and Effective Method in Modern Warfare. The article was republished in a Farsi translation in Tehran.

All indications suggest that Syria's ultimate objective is to mount biological warheads on all varieties of the long-range surface-to-surface missiles in its possession, Bellamy-Decker maintained. This is a goal that can probably be achieved within a few years, and it may already have been realized in part. She argued that instead of producing large quantities of bioweapons agents, Syria is seeking to develop a smaller, but high-quality arsenal, which it can deliver accurately against military and civilian targets. When asked how Syria might be expected to retaliate against Israel or Europe if the U.S. attacked Iran, she responded, Syria has most likely forward-deployed some of their covert operatives. Smallpox does not need to be weaponized. Aerosol release is the way to go.Bellamy-Decker explained the methodology of a terrorist bio-attack:

So with a good primary aerosol release in an airport in Israel or Europe and you could get 100 index cases. If you've made the strain sufficiently virulent, you could have a ratio of 1 to 13 for infectivity, where the normal ratio is 1 to 3. If every index case infects 13 other people, you unfortunately have a great first hit.A terrorist bio-attack could go global, she noted. A good biological hit will spread
rapidly with international travel. Smallpox is a better weapon than anthrax. Smallpox has been field-tested, it is highly stable, and highly communicable, especially if you look at some of the strains the Russians manipulated. Syria probably retained some of [its] smallpox strains from the last outbreak back in 1972.Another risk is the possibility Syria's military might give bioweapons to terrorists. We are close to seeing a breakthrough where Syria could provide biological weapons to some of the terrorist groups they work with, like Hezbollah in Lebanon, Bellamy-Decker argued. The Syrians believe they can vaccinate themselves and they are working within the Syrian military. They're certainly not worried about releasing these biological weapons in a military setting, or even if civilians were infected as well, as long as they are vaccinated. I think it is a real threat.Bellamy-Decker is presenting a paper at this week's Intelligence Summit in St. Petersburg, Fla. It is expected to focus on the sophisticated state of development of the Syrian bioweapons program.

The Syrians have developed a rather remarkable bioweapons capability that has gone under the radar of U.S. intelligence, she said. U.S. intelligence continues to insist that the Syrian capability is not highly developed. The Syrian program mirrors how the Russians have developed their program, as well as Iraq under Saddam Hussein, North Korea, and Iran. The emphasis in the Syrian program is on latent potential and outbreak capability.Bellamy-Decker explained we should not expect to find stockpiles of biological weapons.

Stockpiles are just not how biological weapons are done, she said. With biological weapons, it is not the quantity, but the quality that counts. If you can produce a virulent, communicable strain, then you have a great biological weapon and it doesn't matter how much of it you have, it depends on what the weapon looks like.Bellamy-Decker also referenced a paper she had co-authored for the European Homeland Security Association (EHSA) titled, Public Health Security and Preparedness. This paper is intended to be used as part of a new initiative EHSA is launching in Brussels to hold a quarterly bioterrorism forum bringing together national and international experts with high-level decision-makers to discuss the threat posed by deliberate disease and the appropriate preparedness and response mechanisms vitally needed to address this threat.

What's happening in Israel. Messianic Bible Project MAR 05,07

More and more Jewish people in Israel are turning to Orthodox Judaism because they are trying to fill the spiritual emptiness in their lives.

Chabad Lubavitch, which is a sect of Orthodox Judaism, believes that if all Jews spend more time praying and doing more mitzvot (good deeds), that this will usher in the coming of the Messiah. However, about half of the Lubavitch followers believe that the late Rabbi Schneerson, who died in 1994 at the age of 92, is the promised Messiah of Israel. And the number of Jews who follow this false Messiah is growing daily!

With your help we can get our urgently-needed Messianic Prophecy Bible completed and distributed in Israel, so that Jewish people can be exposed to the truth of the Messianic Prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures and see that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Real Messiah of Israel! Do you know that 99.9% of Israelis do not know that Yeshua is the Messiah and their Salvation? With 5.5 million Jewish people in Israel, and 5.3 million in the United States and Canada, the harvest fields are huge, but we need your help.

Did you put on tefillin today? Egal said to me as I was walking out of the shopping mall.Egal and two other Lubavitchers were standing outside the main entrance of the Ramat Aviv shopping mall (in a suburb of Tel Aviv), asking everyone to put on tefillin (phylacteries) and say the traditional Hebrew prayers. No, I didn't put on tefillin today, I replied. One of them took my left arm and pulled me over to the display table with their books on it, and he began wrapping the leather straps of the tefillin around my left arm. These straps are tied to a leather pouch, that contains small scrolls of Torah passages - the Word of God: Deuteronomy 6:8, 11:18 and Exodus 13:9, 16. The word tefillin comes from the root word tefilah which means prayer. I put on the tefillin so I could share Yeshua with them, and as I said the traditional prayers, I joyously prayed in the name of Yeshua!

Why are you praying in the name of Joshua? Egal asked me. Not Joshua, Yeshua, I replied. Yeshua of Nazareth who fulfilled all of the prophecies in the Tanakh (Old Testament), about the promised Messiah of Israel.

Egal then replied, Oh, you mean Yeshua the Christian ...well I know he was a Jew, born here in Israel. He was a good man, a Tzadik (righteous man) but he went astray and started a new religion. He obviously isn't the Moshiach (Messiah) because if he was the Messiah, Jews would believe in him, but as Jews we certainly don't accept that he is the Messiah.Wow - Egal's statement that Yeshua is rejected by His own people is actually a fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy in Psalm 118:22 which reads: The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone.

Egal then pointed to the books on his table and said to me, Zev you should read Rabbi Schneerson's writings and you will see that he is the Messiah! Have you read the Tanya or the Egross, Uri asked me, pointing to the books on their table. You must really read them, they will change your life forever.

You will find peace that you have never had, and all the questions about God and life will be answered.Pointing to the book on the table, Uri explained that the Tanya is a small book written by the first Rabbi of the Chassidic Lubavitch sect a couple of hundred years ago and it is the essential fundamentals of Jewish life. Zev, when you read the Tanya it will bring out something in you, the hidden part, and when you read and study it, you will come to the understanding of what being a Jew is, Egal explained. It has the answers to every question, and after you read it, you won't have any more questions about life. You will also come to the understanding that Rabbi Schneerson is the long awaited Messiah, and he is alive today! If he is alive, where is he? I asked Egal. He is with God in Heaven, he replied. I then said to Egal, isn't that a strange coincidence because Messianic Jews know that Yeshua is in heaven with God, and this fulfills the Messianic prophecy that King David wrote in Psalm 110:1: The LORD says to my Lord: Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. And this prophecy is fulfilled in the Brit Chadashah (New Testament) in Mark 16:19 where it says: After the Lord Yeshua had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God.

Still trying to convince me that Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah, Uri pointed to the bigger books and explained that along with the Tanya I must read Egross. These books are called Egross which are 26 volumes of letters that were written to Rabbi Schneerson over a period of 50 years.

Our beloved Rabbi answered questions from his followers and all of these letters are published in these 26 volumes of Egross. There are questions about: business (such as what to do with a business partner who is stealing from you); family (how to deal with a husband who yells at his children, or gets involved with another woman); prayer - (how and when to pray), how to do this, or how to do that - any question you can imagine, the Rabbi answered them all and they are here in the Egross, Egal explained.

Zev, Listen Uri said, Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah because the Torah says that he is Messiah. Because the Torah says the Messiah is alive - we know that Rabbi Schneerson - King Messiah is not dead, he is alive.Egal told me that he has only been a Lubavitcher for two years. Before that he was a completely secular Israeli. He did not grow a beard, and he barely even believed in God. But when I became Lubavitch, for the first time I got to know God, and who I am, Egal said. I explained to Egal the prophecies about the Messiah, but he was convinced by the books of Tanya and Egross that Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah. He now works full-time for the Chabab Lubavitch movement recruiting other people to become Lubavitch, and to believe that the dead Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah.

It is very sad that Jewish people rarely read the Tanakh (Bible). Instead they read other spiritual books like the Tanya and Egross which continue to blind them from the truth that Yeshua is the Messiah of Israel. What do you think would have happened if Egal did not meet other Lubavitchers or read the Tanya and Egross, but instead he met Israeli outreach workers who gave him one of our Messianic Prophecy Bibles?

I think Egal would believe in Messiah Yeshua, and he would be saved today.

Our Messianic Prophecy Bible will explain how Yeshua fulfilled all of the prophecies about the Messiah.

Unlike Rabbi Schneerson who did not fulfill the Messianic prophecies, Yeshua did coming riding into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9), Yeshua was born a miraculous birth (Isaiah 7:14), Yeshua was born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), Yeshua did fulfill the time period when the Messiah had to be cut off (Daniel 9:24-26), and there are about 30 other prophecies that Yeshua fulfilled. The late Rabbi Schneerson who is buried in New York, fulfilled NONE of them! He never even visited Jerusalem. The Lubavitch movement has 4,000 full-time outreach workers and a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars to spread lies and the false teaching that Rabbi Schneerson is the Messiah. It is so important for you to make the best gift you can today, so that we can get Lubavitchers and all Jews, a copy of the Messianic Prophecy Bible when it is completed. They will see that Yeshua is the Real Messiah spoken of in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) and have eternal life! Please make a donation to the Bible Project.http://messianicbible.com/donate.asp

Maritimes feel blast as storm roars east

Atlantic Canada was still dealing with the effects of a major winter storm on Saturday that swept across Eastern Canada this week.

A low pressure system was moving over southeastern New Brunswick on its way over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Environment Canada said. The system is bringing with it snow and ice pellets, as well as winds in the northwestern part of Nova Scotia reaching up to 140 km/h.As the storm moves across Newfoundland, the majority of the snow will be moving across the southern part of the island. The southern coast will get most snow, said CBC meteorologist, Teresa Fisico. The winds will be very strong this morning easing through the day and into tomorrow.Meanwhile, areas of southern Quebec and central and eastern Ontario remain in cleanup mode from the storm and will see some lingering effects with flurries today.

The storm brought with it a punishing combination of heavy snow, freezing rain and powerful winds that resulted in downed power lines and trees. At one point some 80,000 Ontario Hydro customers were without power.

The provincial utility said on its website that the storm knocked down wires, trees and more than 400 poles in the Bruce Peninsula and southwestern and eastern Ontario.Power officials said Saturday it had restored power to an estimated 70,000 customers. We're doing really well, Hydro One spokesman Daffyd Roderick told CBC.ca.We've got about 10,000 customers who are still without electricity. The crews are going to make more progress today. As the weekend continues, Roderick said crews may be hampered in places by how much snow has fallen. Some people may wait into Monday, he said.

After a week of heavy storms in parts of the United States, the weekend will end rather tranquilly, as no major outbreaks of precipitation are expected. The Great Lakes region could get snow showers, as a low pressure system moves out of the Northeast. Parts of Florida could also get scattered rain.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 30s in the Northeast, and in the 20s and 30s in the Upper Midwest.Conditions throughout the West are expected to be dry. Temperatures in the Northwest are expected to be in the 30s and 40s, while warmer temperatures are forecast for California, rising into the 80s in some areas.Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of minus 25
degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 90 degrees at Miami, Fla.

Snow and snow showers reach from portions of northern New England southward into the southern Appalachians this afternoon. Most of the snowfall, generally light, is concentrated in New York state, western Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. Snow advisories are posted for portions of New York's Adirondacks and Vermont's Green Mountains where another inch or two is expected by evening. In the West, avalanche warnings, due to recent heavy snows, remain in effect for the mountains of northern Utah. Freeze warnings for tonight have been issued for parts of southern Texas, southern South Carolina, southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Melbourne hit record high temp Friday
BY SUSANNE CERVENKA MARCH 04,07

A record high for Melbourne set Friday afternoon was followed up by a rainy parade.

Temperatures shot up to 92 degrees at about 3 p.m. at Melbourne International Airport, breaking the previous record of 87 degrees set in 1991, said Matt Bragaw, forecaster with the National Weather Services in Melbourne. It was a pretty hefty break, he said. The record temperature was caused by a strong southwest airflow, Bragaw said. The wind blew across the entire peninsula, picking up the warm land air.But don’t expect a repeat. The cold front will not push through the Space Coast very quickly, and the dreary weather is expected through Sunday, Bragaw said. Sunday’s highs are expected to be in the upper 60s, he said. The sun should return Monday and Tuesday, but the highs will still remain in the upper 60s and lower 70s, respectively. Melbourne did not have any severe weather over Friday night, Bragaw said. Only a trace of rain was recorded at the airport, which will do little to quell the area’s dry spell, he said.

Brushfires should not be a concern today with the high humidity and clouds keeping the temperatures down, Bragaw said. That could change as the weather dries up at the start of the week, he said.

Residents should take extra caution with flames during any dry spell, he said.Contact Cervenka at 321-360-1018 or scervenka@floridatoday.com

PURIM SUN MARCH 04,07

Today In Jewish History 14 Adar

In 355 BCE, the Jews celebrated their successful defeat of Haman's anti-Semitic mobs, an event we commemorate today with the Purim holiday. We read the Megillah (Scroll of Esther), dress up in costumes, and celebrate how the Jews of Persia narrowly escaped annihilation, thanks to the bravery of Esther and Mordechai. In Shushan, the Persian capital, however, the battle lasted one additional day and Purim was not celebrated until the 15th of Adar. Thus today in Jerusalem, Purim is celebrated one day later than the rest of the world.Adar 14 is also the day in 1912 that Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah, the women's Zionist organization. In 1892, even before Herzl's activities, Szold and her father formed the first Zionist society in Baltimore, and Hadassah was her idea to mobilize American Jewish women in support of Israel. In 1920, Szold made aliyah, wher she supervised the opening of Hadassah medical units, playgrounds and public health programs. At age 73, Szold, as head of the Youth Aliyah Department, traveled to Germany where she worked to save Jewish youth destined for Hitler's ovens. Szold is buried in Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives. Today Hadassah operates the largest hospital in Jerusalem, and its 300,000 members make it one of the largest women's organizations in the world.

Also on this day, in 1942, in the town of Zdunska Wola in Nazi-occupied Poland, 10 Jews were hanged by Hitler's SS, in a sadistic parody of events in the Book of Esther. To add to this debacle, the Gestapo ordered all Jews out of their homes in order to witness the hangings. On Purim day the following year, 1943, there was another Purim massacre in the Polish town of Piotrkow, where 10 Jews were executed. Hitler harbored a venomous hatred for the holiday of Purim: When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, he banned the reading of the Book of Esther, an ordered that all synagogues be closed and barred on Purim day. Unless Germany is victorious, he proclaimed, Jewry could then celebrate the destruction of Europe by a second triumphant Purim Festival. Incredibly, when Nazi officer Julius Streicher ascended the gallows to be hanged at Nuremberg, he shouted, Purimfest 1946.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS WILL BE USED.

ISAIAH 26:21
21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.(WW3,1/2 earths population die).

ISAIAH 13:6-13 KJV
6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

MALACHI 4:1
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

MATTHEW 24:37-51
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

MK Dotan: Israel interested in closer ties with EU
By SHEERA CLAIRE FRENKEL

MK Amira Dotan told European Union commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner on Thursday that Israel is interested in becoming more involved in the EU. Dotan, a Kadima MK who chairs the Knesset delegation to the Parliament of the European Union, wrote to Ferrero-Waldner - who visited Israel earlier this week - expressing her hope for a stronger partnership.I am writing to you in light of your comments to The Jerusalem Post regarding Israel's ability to do more to move closer to the European Union, wrote Dotan. I share in your thinking that more can be done to maximize the potential inherent in the Israel-EU potential (sic) by way of the European Neighborhood Policy and the EU-Israel Action Plan… I view your comments as an outstretched hand from the EU and I am committed to take the necessary measures to turn words into actions.Dotan also said that there was a natural base for partnership between the EU and Israel. The Europeans and Israelis are developing themselves in similar ways. Their dilemmas are similar to ours, said Dotan. I wanted to make sure [Ferrero-Waldner] heard my voice... There is a sense that Israel has not done as much as it should to be involved in the EU.

HAMONGOG ARAB BURIAL SITE

I Wonndered how the Israelis could possibly think George W Bush is Gog in Ezekiel 38 and 39. Well I just found out how in this article. We know Gog is Russia, but the Israelis take the North to mean the United states and since someone came up with the word George for Gog, they just automatically believe who ever made it up. And it obviously stuck, because all the Israelis i talk to Believe George W Bush is Gog and not Russia.

How was Gog pronounced

A key to the mystery of what or who is Gog, might be to know the way that this name was pronounced at the days of Ezekiel, in ancient Hebrew.Gog is written in Hebrew with 3 letters. First is Gimmel with Dagesh, second Holam Male, and third Gimmel with no Dagesh. The Babylonian Jews have the longest tradition of the way of reading the Bible in the synagogues. When they read Gog, it is pronounced Gogh, which sounds in English like Gorr (gh like Arabic for Baghdad).

We can also try another way to see how it was pronounced. On the 7th century the Islamic religion arose in Arabia. In their book they used many Jewish phrases. They probably pronounced it in the way that Jews used to pronounce it back then. Gog is called in the book of Islam: Joj.So we have JOJ and we have GORR. Someone combined the two possible ways, and created the name GEORGE.

But this is a big change from Gog.Another interesting thing is that the name of Gog does appear one more time in the Bible, but in a rare place. In 1 Chronicles (5,1):Sons of Joel: Shmayah his son, Gog his son, Shim'i his son.

COULD THIS STORY BELOW BECOME FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPHECY THAT SAYS THE NAME OF THE PLACE WERE THE FIVE-SIXTH OF THE RUSSIAN-ARAB ARMIES WILL BE BURIED WILL BE NAMED HAMONGOG.

EZEKIEL 39:11-22
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

IF THIS PROPHECY IS COMING TO PASS THE NAME OF THE SETTLEMENTS WILL END UP BEING NAMED HAMONGOG, THE ARABS WILL BE NAMING THEIR OWN DEATHWISH BURIAL PLACE. IF HAMAS DOES NAME IT HAMONGOG WE KNOW THAT THE MARCH TO ISRAEL CAN NOT BE TO FAR BEHIND.

THE 2 PLACES THE ARABS WANT TO RENAME ALREADY HAVE A SLIGHT RING TO HAMONGOG, Kfar Yam - Tripoli (a city in north Lebanon), Morag - Baghdad

Mar. 2, 2007 4:39 - Hamas may rename settlement sites
By KHALED ABU TOAMEH

The Hamas-led Palestinian Authority government is planning to rename the sites of former Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip after famous Islamic battles and some former Arab cities inside Israel, as well as Arab capitals. The move, which comes on the eve of the formation of a joint Hamas-Fatah coalition, has drawn criticism from Fatah representatives, who say the outgoing government does not have the authority to make such an important decision. A document obtained by The Jerusalem Post shows that Hamas leaders have made plans to rename at least 20 settlements that were evacuated in August 2005. The document, drafted by Palestinian Authority Agriculture Minister Muhammed al-Agha of Hamas, will soon be brought to the Palestinian Legislative Council for approval.

For Morag - read Baghdad, for Elei Sinai - read Acre

Agha said the decision to rename the former settlements reflects our love for the liberated land. He said the names he and his staff chose mostly express Arab dignity and pride. He added that the decision was also an expression of gratitude to all Palestinians who sacrificed their lives to drive Israel out of the Gaza Strip. Fatah officials in the Gaza Strip, however, said they were opposed to Hamas's initiative, pointing out that the Islamic movement did not have the right to make such a decision without consulting with other Palestinian factions. The decision is unacceptable, a senior Fatah operative in the Gaza Strip told the Post. The Hamas government is trying to create new facts on the ground as if they are alone out there. Who gave them the right to take such a crucial decision and how come they didn't consult with anyone else?

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Agriculture fired hundreds of Palestinian guards who were working at the sites of the former settlements. Fatah spokesmen claimed the move was politically motivated and that Hamas was seeking to replace the dismissed workers with Hamas men.

The Hamas settlement-renaming document lists 20 former Jewish settlements and Israeli-controlled areas in the Gaza Strip and suggests they be renamed immediately.

Following are some of the proposed changes:

• Erez - Qana
(the south Lebanese village where more than 100 people were killed by Israeli missiles during Operation Grapes of Wrath more than a decade ago)

• Dugit - Badr (a place in Saudi Arabia where a key battle took place between Prophet Muhammad and his rivals. The battle was seen as a turning point in Muhammad's struggle against the Meccan Quraish tribe. The battle has been passed down in Islamic history as a decisive victory attributable to divine intervention or the genius of Muhammad.)

• Netzer Hazani - Hittin (the place where the battle took place in 1187 between the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem and the forces of the Ayyubid dynasty under the renowned Muslim warrior Saladin. The battle enabled the Muslims to regain control of Jerusalem from the Christians.)

• Neveh Dekalim - Al-Karamah (a village in the lower Jordan Valley that was the site of a battle between the IDF and Fatah. The Arabs describe it as the first Arab victory over Israel after the Six Day War in 1967.)

• Kfar Yam - Tripoli (a city in north Lebanon)

• Morag - Baghdad

• Kfar Darom - Castel

• Bnei Atzmon - Safed

• Nisanit - Nahawand (The Battle of Nahawand (Niharvand) gave the Arabs a final victory over the Persians and ended the Sassanian dynasty that ruled Persia for four centuries.)

• Slav - Damascus

Storm blankets Quebec, aims for Maritimes
Friday, March 2, 2007 - CBC News

A winter storm blamed for at least two deaths and commuter chaos in southern Ontario is bringing high winds and heavy snowfall to Quebec on Friday as it sweeps toward the Maritimes.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for regions stretching from Ottawa into southern Quebec as well as all of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The problem with this winter storm is we've seen everything ,snow, freezing rain, rain, ice pellets and high winds, said CBC meteorologist Nick Czernkovich. The storm, which knocked out power to roughly 80,000 people in Ontario overnight, brought 27 centimetres of snow to the Montreal area in just 12 hours, Czernkovich said.Friday was a snow day for most students in the greater Montreal region, as all major school boards called off classes for the day. Many flights were cancelled at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. The combination of heavy snow, freezing rain and winds brought down power lines and trees, Czernkovich added. We all look at the snowfall, but we can't underestimate the effect of winds.Part of the storm is sheering off toward northern Ontario as the main body heads eastward and is expected to hit the Atlantic provinces later on Friday. In Nova Scotia, high winds were forecast for the shoreline late Friday, with some areas expected to be hit with gusts of up to 100 km/h.

Thousands without power

Meanwhile, across Ontario, thousands of residents woke up Friday morning in homes without power.Hydro One spokesman Daffyd Roderick told CBC Newsworld about 80,000 households and businesses had no electricity.Hydro crews were alerted to 25 snapped poles on Thursday afternoon, but the main obstacle facing power crews is gaining access, he said. There's only so much we can do until Mother Nature does her work, and then we can set about repairing … when conditions are safe out there.By Friday afternoon, officials said power had been restored to 40,000 customers.

Meanwhile, police in Toronto closed a downtown section of Front Street after chunks of ice were seen falling from the CN Tower and other buildings. It's like shrapnel when it hits the ground, a police officer told CBC News.

Few parts of southwestern Ont. unscathed

The power failures have affected portions of southwestern Ontario from Strathroy and Walkerton to Newmarket and the GTA.Very few parts are unscathed today, Roderick said, adding the hardest-hit areas may have to wait between three and five days to see the situation restored to normal. Wind gusts of up to 82 km/h were recorded at Toronto Island Airport. Many Ontario roads are flooded or slick with ice, and more freezing rain and snow on Friday could make driving conditions just as treacherous as the previous day, when the intense storm was blamed for the deaths of two children.

Police said the children seven-year-old Anita Hiebert and her six-year-old brother, Pancho died Thursday when a car and a truck collided on an icy, snow-blown road near the town of Listowel, northwest of Kitchener. The children's mother, Christina Hiebert, is in critical condition in a London hospital.Police and tow trucks responded to hundreds of other crashes across southern Ontario, as blowing snow and ice pellets created slippery conditions and poor visibility.

National Weather Service Preliminary Data - EF Scale 3 Tornado Hit EnterpriseMarch 2, 2007 05:23 PM EST

ENTERPRISE, Ala., March 2, 2007 -- Bob Goree of the National Weather Service says preliminary indications are that the tornado that ravished the Enterprise area was an EF Scale 3 tornado.

Today we see the intensity of the damage. Now, we're not quite ready to put the new enhanced Fujita Scale value on this. We can tell you the preliminary finding is, it will be at least an EF scale 3. It may become that officially. We're getting some engineering help to hopefully finalize that intensity tomorrow.Goree says the storm was unusual for this part of the deep South. Yesterday's tornado in this area, Enterprise and other areas, over into Georgia were extremely powerful for this area of the country. Usually we see short-lived, smaller tornadoes that affect say one dwelling or more. But to see this school and other areas devastated by this powerful tornado is heartbreaking and really a rare sight fortunately for this area. He says this was an extremely long-lived tornadic super cell which even awed National Weather Service meteorologists.

The size of this storm was incredibly large. We seldom see tornados in the deep Southeast that are 200 yards wide or so. I think some of the video is out there of this storm and it's incredible. On our Doppler radars we rarely again get to see such a powerful storm signature as we did yesterday. Our meteorologists...were in awe of the shape, the structure and the intensity of the rotation in this super cell thunderstorm as it moved into this area.Goree says the new enhanced Fujita Scale is meant to be more practical. He said the earlier scale was more objective and looked more at wind speeds, but the new scale really reflects how bad was the damage whether than some exact wind damage measurement. So what does the National Weather Service look at to make their final determination?

On our new scale we use damage indicators such as trees - the number and percentage of the trees that were snapped, whether the bark is stripped off of the trees, indicators like that to determine what the power of the wind was. He says they also look at the strength of the buildings. This (Enterprise H.S.) is a very strong structure here and we saw some structural failure.Goree says the most powerful center of the vortex...moved through the center of the school and into the parking lot and across the stadium. It's a sad day for us at the National Weather Service...We're always saddened when we see death and injuries in the communities which we serve and we have to redouble our efforts to get people safe in the path of these terrible storms.

Widespread storms cause deaths in 3 states
By BRENDA GOODMAN Published: March 2, 2007

ATLANTA: A violent storm system that stretched nearly 1,000 miles from the Midwest to the Southeast has killed at least 20 people in three states, including 8 who died when what appeared to be a tornado caused the roof to collapse at a high school in Enterprise, Ala. on Thursday, state emergency management officials said.

At least 31 tornados have been reported over the last two days in Missouri, Illinois, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, the National Weather Service reported. The storm system has been blamed for nine deaths in Alabama, two in Georgia and one in Missouri.A tornado apparently touched down early today near the Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, 117 miles south of Atlanta. The storm blew out the hospital's windows, tossed cars into trees and killed at least two people, but the extent of the damage remained unclear. We're still tying to assess everything, the Americus fire chief, Andy Belinc, told The Associated Press early this morning. Georgia's governor declared a state of emergency.Storms continued to lash at the area this morning. The weather service issued a tornado warning for coastal areas of North Carolina. In South Carolina, the Coast Guard prepared to search for six people on a small boat who sent a distress call during the storm, saying they were taking on water off the coast.

In the Mississippi Delta, a juke joint keeps the blues alive U.S. Army secretary resigns Head of criticized U.S. Army medical center is fired On Thursday, students at Enterprise High School had just been ordered to take cover in hallways when fierce winds bore down around 1 p.m., plunging them into darkness and pounding them with falling debris.

The ceiling part fell on us, and rocks hit me on the back, said Ezekiel Jones, 17, a senior who was in the school gymnasium when the storm struck. I was thinking of my mom, my girlfriend, my sister and my friends. Everybody was screaming.Steven Carter, 16, a junior, said he was in the science wing when the lights went out.It happened fast, Steven said. There wasn't much warning. He said he could smell gas leaking from the Bunsen burners in the classrooms. A lot of kids were trapped, Steven said.Steven said he saw science teachers tending to some of the wounded with first-aid kits salvaged from the wrecked classrooms.Toni J. Kaminski, a spokeswoman for Medical Center Enterprise, said the hospital treated 50 to 60 people. We have seen a myriad of injuries, including a ruptured spleen, head trauma, chest trauma, broken bones, Ms. Kaminski said.Though the high school seems to have taken a direct hit, neighborhoods throughout Enterprise also reported extensive damage.

Jeanne Davis, 55, a clerk at the Army base at nearby Fort Rucker, said she rushed home after the winds stopped to find shingles torn off her roof and a two-by-four driven into the ground in her front yard.

Throughout Enterprise, which has a population of about 21,000 people, cars were upended, trees were snapped and homes flattened, with other reports of injuries coming from the downtown area. Dozens die in Indonesia landslides
POSTED: 1140 GMT (1940 HKT), March 3, 2007

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) Landslides triggered by days of heavy rain killed at least 32 people in eastern Indonesia on Saturday, and scores more were believed to be buried under the mud, officials said. One social affairs ministry employee said he had received reports from amateur radio operators that 65 people had been killed on Flores island. The official, who was speaking on radio station el-Shinta, was not immediately reachable.Roads made inaccessible by a three-day deluge were complicating rescue operations and making compiling definitive tolls of the dead and missing difficult, said Frans Lebu Raya, a senior government official on the remote island. We have not been able to get heavy machinery to the villages, because landslides have also cut off the main road to the area, said Rustam Pakaya, the chief of the Health Department's Crisis Center in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.

Many parts of the road also have collapsed.

Pakaya said he received a fax from the island reporting that landslides early Saturday killed at least 32 people in Cibal and Lambaleda districts, and that 20 people were missing and believed buried.State news agency Antara reported landslides occurring in at least 15 other villages or districts, leaving some houses buried and vehicles damaged. It said roads were blocked in 20 places.Instant noodles, canned fish, cooking oil and emergency tents were being distributed to some districts on the remote island, about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Jakarta, Antara reported.Seasonal downpours cause dozens of deadly landslides and flash floods each year in Indonesia, a vast chain of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.Last month, floods in Jakarta killed almost 100 people and paralyzed large sections of the city.

EU promises to rally efforts to push Mideast peace MAR 2,07

Benita Ferrero-Waldner,European Commissioner for External Relations and European
Neighbourhood Policy, said here Friday that the European Union (EU) is adamant to rally efforts to push forward the Mideast peace process. Waldner, who arrived here Thursday, made the pledge in a press conference on Friday at the end of her two-day visit to Egypt, the last stop of her four-leg tour that also took her to Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories. The EU welcomes the Mecca agreement reached recently between the two Palestinian mainstream movements of Fatah and Hamas on the formation of a national unity government, Waldner told the reporters.

The European commissioner noted that she would present a report on the outcome of her regional tour to an EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting, which will be held in Brussels on Monday for talks on the situation in the Mideast. Meanwhile, donor states to the Palestinians will also meet in Brussels on March 13 for talks on means of further backing the Palestinian people, she added. Regarding the EU-Egyptian ties, Waldner denied that the union was seeking to impose reforms or intervene in the Egyptian affairs via the European Neighbourhood policy plan for Egypt. The EU action plan was meant to reinfroce the Egyptian government's program on political, economic and social reforms, she said. Source: Xinhua

Israel criticizes Russian-Syrian arms deal MAR 2,07

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 2 (UPI) Israeli officials Friday criticized Russia for agreeing to provide Syria with advanced missiles that could penetrate Israel's Merkava tanks. The Russian AT-15 anti-tank missiles have a range of 6 kilometers, beyond the Merkavas', and can overcome some of the Israeli measures designed to protect the tanks. Officials are concerned the arms would reach the Lebanese Hezbollah. During last year's war in Lebanon, Russian anti-tank missiles were fired at Israeli tanks and damaged some. The Jerusalem Post Friday quoted Vice Premier Shimon Peres as saying the supply of arms to Syria encouraged Damascus to turn to war.Syria is moving between peace overtures and its temptations to go to war, to which arms supply is an incentive, Peres added. Former Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said that Russian President Vladimir Putin seemingly decided to restore Russia's Soviet-empire status, and was playing with fire. The military intelligence Sunday told the Cabinet the Syrians are using Hezbollah, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad to fight Israel although Damascus is indicating a desire for a peace process. Director of Military Intelligence Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin told the ministers, The prospects for a Syrian-initiated full scale war are low, but the chances it would react militarily to Israeli military moves are high. The Mossad secret service said Syria is trying to improve its defensive military capability and is more ready to take risks and retaliate with force to Israeli moves. In the past, Israel sent F-15s over President Bashar Assad's home in northern Syria to signal to him to stop aiding militant groups that attack Israel.

Israel training for war with Iran, Syria?
Palestinians claim army conducted exercises in West Bank city
March 2, 2007 By Aaron Klein - WorldNetDaily.com

TEL AVIV – Israel this week conducted military training exercises in a Palestinian city for a possible war scenario against Syria or Iran, top Palestinian intelligence officials claimed to WND. The Israeli government denied the claim. The Israel Defense Forces today completed a week-long, large-scale operation in Nablus, the largest West Bank Arab city. The operation, codenamed Hot Winter, utilized four IDF battalions, reservists and border police guards and purportedly was aimed at arresting top wanted terror leaders in the city. Nablus is a stronghold of several major Palestinian terror organizations, most notably the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the declared military wing of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party. The Brigades and Islamic Jihad are responsible for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years. During the
large operation, the IDF did not arrest any top terror suspects, but the army said it found three weapons factories as well as an arms cache. One top Palestinian intelligence official said he found the operation unusual in that it involved a rotation of Israeli forces and didn't achieve anything militarily as far as fighting terrorism.

On the ground you had a massive number of soldiers who seemed to be conducting drills. They were in the city the entire week with units switching. Normally week-long military operations utilize the same units and don't keep switching troops. In the end, after a week of a major military presence, what did the IDF get as far as fighting terror in Nablus? commented the top official. The operation was very clearly an urban warfare training exercise, likely for a confrontation with Syria or Iran, the official claimed. Another top Palestinian intelligence official told WND, Nablus happens to resemble very closely as a model the city of Damascus.A spokeswoman for the IDF denied Palestinian claims the large operation was for war training. She said the Israeli army arrested 11 militants in Nablus this week, although she said they were lower-level and did not include any members of Israel's wanted list.

Abu Nasser, the second-in-command of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Nablus, told WND no members of his group or the Islamic Jihad terror organization were arrested during the Israeli operation. It didn't feel like we were even being targeted, Abu Nasser said. The claim of Israeli training follows reports in the Israeli media last week Syria, aided by Iranian officers, has been boosting its army and navy. The reports, denied by Damascus, claimed Syria last week was moving troops closer to the border with Israel. Israeli security officials told WND Israel is not expecting confrontations with Iran or Syria. Speaking theoretically, they said if any war breaks out involving Iran, they expect Syria, Hezbollah and Palestinian terrorists to join the fray and attack Israel. The security officials said the greatest threat Syria poses to the Jewish state are the country's missiles. They noted Syria recently test-fired two Scud-D surface-to-surface missiles, which have a range of about 250 miles, covering most Israeli territory. The officials said the Syrian missile test was coordinated with Iran and is believed to have been successful. It is not known what type of warhead the missiles had.

In addition to longer range Scuds, Syria is in possession of shorter range missiles such as 220 millimeter and 305 millimeter rockets, some of which have been passed on to Hezbollah. According to information received by Israel, Russia is set to conclude a deal worth several hundred million dollars transferring thousands of advanced anti-tank missiles to Syria. Anti-tank missiles used by Hezbollah during Israel's war in Lebanon last summer devastated Israeli tanks and caused the highest number of Israeli troop casualties during the 34 days of military confrontations. Last week, a senior officer from the intelligence unit of the Israeli Defense Forces announced Hezbollah is stronger today than before the 2006 Lebanon war.

Hezbollah has reinforced and it is stronger today than it was before the war in Lebanon, Gen. Yossi Beidatz, head of the IDF's intelligence research department, told the Knesset. During the war in Lebanon, Hezbollah fired more than 3,000 rockets into northern Israel, killing 39 civilians and devastating many northern towns. Beidatz also said Syria is reinforcing its military to prepare for the possibility of a new armed conflict in the region.

Israel Celebrates Purim Holiday Under Tight Security
By Robert Berger Jerusalem - 03 March 2007

Israel is celebrating the biblical holiday of Purim under tight security. As Robert Berger reports from VOA's Jerusalem bureau, Israel has restricted the movement of Palestinians amid concerns of possible terror attacks. An effigy of the ancient Persian King Haman hangs from a lamp post at entrance to an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem, 2 Mar 2007 It is a weekend of parties and celebrations as Israelis mark the holiday of Purim with costume parties in homes and community centers and on the streets. The holiday marks the deliverance of the Jews from annihilation in ancient Persia some 2,400 years ago, as told in the biblical Book of Esther. Security is extremely tight for the holiday. The army has sealed off the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Palestinians have been barred from entering Israel. Police say they have intelligence information that Palestinian militants could try to disrupt the holiday with terrorist attacks. It has happened before. A suicide bomber blew up a Purim parade in Tel Aviv in 1996, killing 13 people. But that hasn't stopped the celebrations this year. It's a party. Everybody's coming dressed up as something, says Amit Gabbai, a Jerusalem high school student, who was dressed up as character from a Hollywood hit. Well, I'm wearing this beautiful green dress and I put on a wig. And I'm dressed as Princess Fiona from Shrek 1.Are children worried about the threat of terror?

Yes and no, says Gabbai. No because, I don't know, I live here and it's usual for me and I know where not to go and I go to safe places, and yes because I mean everybody's dressing up, everybody's putting masks on and like carrying fake guns, and the terrorists could take advantage of that and dress up and, you know, do something bad.Police and soldiers have stepped up their presence at the borders and crowded public places. Despite the threats, police have urged the public to come out and celebrate.

Stocks fall amid rise in yen; Dow posts worst performance in more than 4 yearsBy Associated Press - Friday, March 2, 2007

NEW YORK Stocks stumbled in the final session of a tumultuous week Friday as the yen rallied against the dollar and concerns about the U.S. economy still dogged investors after Tuesday’s huge drop.

The Dow Jones industrials logged their worst weekly performance in more than four years; until this week, the stock market had gone more than 45 months without a drop of more than 2 percent in a single session. The Dow, as it had Thursday, poked tentatively into positive territory Friday before retreating as the yen furthered its gains and investors failed to shake their unease. Larger economic concerns such as the ascendent yen have dominated Wall Street for much of the week after Tuesday’s worldwide selloff that sent the Dow down 416 points and rattled investor confidence about the state of the U.S. economy. Neil Massa, senior trader at MFC Global Investment Management, said stocks wobbled Friday after the yen broke through a key resistance level of 116.80.

The dollar fell 0.92 percent to 116.86 yen.

Concerns lingered about a decline in the yen carry trade, which refers to the process of borrowing yen to acquire assets with greater yields in other currencies. A slowdown could hurt liquidity worldwide. Concerns about Japanese interest rates also weighed on investors. A well-received profit report from American International Group Inc. kept the Dow industrials from falling further Friday; the insurer and pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. were the only two advancers among the index’s 30 stocks. Merck, which received a mixed verdict Friday in a trial over its former painkiller Vioxx, finished up 20 cents at $44.19.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow fell 120.24, or 0.98 percent, to 12,114.10. The Dow has fallen seven of the last eight sessions. Broader stock indicators also fell. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 16.00, or 1.14 percent, to 1,387.17 and the Nasdaq composite index slid 36.21, or 1.51 percent, to 2,368.00. For the week, the Dow fell 3.3 percent, the S&P 500 lost 4.4 percent and the Nasdaq fell 5.9 percent. For the Dow and the S&P 500, it was their worst weekly performance since the week ended July 19, 2002. And for the Nasdaq, it was the poorest weekly showing since the week ended Sept. 21, 2001, the first week of trading after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Bond prices rose sharply as economic concerns lingered and raised hopes for an interest rate cut.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.51 percent from 4.55 percent late Thursday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell sharply. Light, sweet crude settled down 36 cents to $61.64 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after settling at a more than two month high Thursday. I think looking at the world economies as a whole it just seems like growth is slowing across the board, or at least that’s the impression, he said. Diane Dercher, chief economist at Waddell & Reed, said investors are trying to sort through the myriad signals the markets have given off this week.Fundamentally, I don’t think a lot has changed this week and I think it’s been more of a psychological re-evaluation of risk and a lot of this is focused around what’s happened in the Asian markets, she said. There is a renewed focus on how weak the economy is going to be and the data that we’ve gotten this week have been very mixed and that just adds to confusion about how weak the economy is going to be, Dercher said.

Investors seemed somewhat cheered by the final Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading for February, even as it fell to 91.3 from 96.9 from January. Earlier this week, the Conference Board said its own measure of consumer confidence reached a 5 1/2 year high.

With little of the economic data that has at turns boosted and deflated sentiment this week, investors again looked abroad for direction. Performance of overseas markets has taken on renewed importance this week after a nearly 9 percent drop in the Shanghai Composite Index helped touch off the worldwide selling and sent U.S. stocks reeling. The major U.S. indexes each lost more than 3 percent Tuesday, erasing $632 billion in shareholder equity, according to S&P. St. Louis Federal Reserve President William Poole said in remarks prepared for a speech Friday in Santiago, Chile, that rising energy prices wouldn’t necessarily lead to an economic slowdown if monetary policy were laid out carefully. With trading less frenetic than in previous days, investors had some time to parse individual stocks as they looked for bargains.

AIG’s fourth-quarter profit rose sharply from a year earlier when the world’s largest insurer spent $1.64 billion to settle charges over its accounting practices. Profits were slightly below Wall Street’s forecast though investors were likely pleased by the company’s announcement it would repurchase $5 billion in stock in 2007. The company also is targeting a 20 percent annual increase in its dividend.

AIG rose $2.13, or 3.2 percent, to $69.54. Dell Inc. rose 17 cents to $23.18 after the computer maker’s profit fell 33 percent amid weak laptop sales. While revenue fell more than expected, the overall results weren’t as sour as some investors had feared. Gap Inc.

fell 63 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $18.40 after the company’s fourth-quarter earnings dropped 35 percent amid problems that include its newest chain, which the company plans to close. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.86 billion shares, compared with an unusually heavy 2.22 billion shares traded Thursday. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 15.59, or 1.97 percent, to 775.44. Overseas, Japan’s Nikkei stock average closed down 1.35 percent, while the Shanghai Composite Index was up 1.23 percent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index added 0.49 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 finished higher by less than 0.01 percent, Germany’s DAX index fell 0.56 percent, and France’s CAC-40 slid 0.62 percent.
