Guest Post: Goldman Sachs’ Psychology and Spirituality

RespondAs a perfect case study illustrating how our economic system feeds our psychology and spirituality, one ofCSPER’s tenets, I thought I’d characterize what some of my old colleagues from Harvard b-school and firms like Goldman have been saying…I know I add value to my clients and to society at large and I am very comfortable with that.Of course claiming to add value is just repeating empty talking points from fraudulent Economics 101 they learned as students (see the first 4 lessons of Renaissance 2.0 to revisit the flaws of the economics taught in colleges today). This is an example of how the best and brightest have no real ability to think independently, but simply a good ability to memorize what the system tells them as kids so they become its best servants (no surprise, the latter half ofLesson 6 pt 3 mentions how the system builds conformity in us, not free thinking).Most of you know the truth about Goldman by now–a parasite that uses debt and its membership in the unconstitutional money cartel (lesson 1) to feed on the productive economy, what little of it exists anymore–so I won’t go into that. What I want to do here is show how this ties to self-esteem (psychology) and sense of purpose in life (spirituality).

Psychology: They are comfortable with their roles in firms like Goldman. You can imagine the level of internal disconnect they have with the real impact their firm has on the population–the fact that their huge paychecks come from the indebtedness of the American people and being an inside cartel member. Not only do they have no intellectual understanding of it, but a big reason they don’t have an understanding is because they can’t face the truth. They stay in the academic clouds believing they add value because they can’t look for the truth without losing belief in their identity. It would be a psychological blow. The role we play in the economic system is inextricably tied to our psychology. So by avoiding the truth, they’re psychologically very comfortable.But this also means they’re psychologically narcissistic–narcissism is a dangerous disconnect from reality and truth.

Spirituality: They say they add value to society at large.That’s the key. They reach the realm of religion when they say that. It’s their raisson d’etre. They think they’re saving the world. Remember Goldman CEO Blankfein saying his firm does God’s work? Well, these folks show that they’ve been fully baptized into the cult. This is the type of mentality necessary to fuel the catastrophic destruction of society we’ve witnessed. Your average low-rent criminal mentality would NOT be enough to fuel what the Wall Street cartel has done to the world over the last several years. It takes spirituality, a belief that you’re serving a higher purpose, warped though it may be, to pull that off.So I hope this helps make the case for CSPER and explain why I connected the S P and E together. The connection is critical. The economic system defines what we spend most of our waking hours doing, which means it can’t help but be a primary determinant of our psychology and spirituality. So an economic system built on an immoral, unhealthy monetary system cannot help but breed immoral spirituality and unhealthy psychology over time. It must be changed.

Lawmakers and protesters in Afghanistan are calling for just that

It has never been easy to work as a Christian—local or foreign—in Afghanistan. But since a video was broadcast on Afghan television showing the baptism of converts in Kabul, the danger has escalated—and the tiny minority suddenly finds itself a potentially sizeable pawn in a game of political chess.Privately owned Noorin TV first broadcast in late May videotape coverage of a baptism, along with Afghans taking part in Christian prayer meetings in alleged missionary safe houses in western Kabul. Although at least two years old, the footage was replayed on several television stations and triggered a frenzied anti-Christian response: Hundreds of students joined street protests at Kabul University, shouting death threats and demanding the expulsion of foreigners. Demonstrations also spread from the capital to other cities, including Herat, Baghlan, and Mazar-e-Sharif.Two of the Afghan Christians who appeared in the broadcast were arrested and shown again on national television. The next day (May 31), the deputy secretary of the lower house of parliament, Abdul Sattar Khawasi, called from the parliament floor for the public execution of the Afghan converts. Other members of parliament condemned the activities of foreign non-government organizations (NGOs), and that same day two were suspended from working in the country: U.S.-based Church World Service and Norwegian Church Aid.The groups deny they have been involved in proselytizing. Both have had major operations in Afghanistan: Church World Service employs 190 people there, and Norwegian Church Aid, with 50, was in the midst of an $8 million project.

Waheed Omar, spokesman for President Hamid Karzai, announced on June 1 that the president had ordered steps to prevent further conversions to Christianity. According to sources, authorities drew up a list of 14 NGOs and 25 or more foreign and local Christians to be investigated for Christian activity. A statement released Friday by Barnabas Fund, a U.K.-based aid group, reports that authorities have searched homes in Kabul, and dozens of Afghan Christians have fled their towns, some even leaving the country.Several NGOs also report that they have been visited by security officials, and in some cases asked to record for the government the names of all employees. WORLD began receiving information about the crackdown at that time, but at the request of several organizations concerned about the safety of their employees and of local Christians agreed not to publish the information then.But a group of Afghan Christians living in New Delhi issued the following statement: We do not know how the whole world and especially the global church is silent and closing their eyes while thousands of their brothers and sisters are in pain, facing life danger and death penalty and are tortured, persecuted and called criminals.Barnabas Fund president Patrick Sookhdeo told me he also believed that Western Christians need to understand and speak out about what’s happening to Christians in Afghanistan: Just as the United States fractured Iraq and so Christians there had to go to the wall while the U.S. did not defend them, much of this is happening again in Afghanistan.On June 5, the Afghan minister of the Interior and the director of the Security Department resigned suddenly. The official reason was that they had not prevented a Taliban attack on a peace conference Karzai attended June 2 in Kabul. But both officials also worked at one time for Western NGOs, including Norwegian Church Aid.

Why would government officials go to such lengths to silence a handful of minority religious believers? Because Christians, who in the eyes of many Afghans are associated with Westerners, are seen as a tool to bring pressure and embarrassment on an increasingly unpopular President Karzai. Noorin TV, which first broadcast the tapes, is funded by the Northern Alliance and seen as anti-government. Burhanuddin Rabbani, a former president of Afghanistan, now heads an affiliated opposition group in parliament and came out against Karzai during the last election.The problem also stems from the ambiguity in Afghanistan’s constitution, which was largely brokered with assistance from the United States in 2003-2004 (see Dress rehearsal? Jan. 17, 2004). It created an Islamic republic that granted freedoms and democracy with Islam as its sacred religion. While Article 2 grants that followers of other religions are free to perform their religious ceremonies within the limits of the provisions of law,Article 3 states,No law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam.Under Islamic law, converts from Islam become guilty of apostasy, which is punishable by death. In 2006 a case surfaced against Abdul Rahman, an Afghan citizen who was arrested for converting to Christianity and threatened with the death penalty. Under heavy international pressure, including from the Vatican, officials released him and he was granted asylum in Italy.The pressure for Karzai to deal forcibly with converts comes as he is seeking to lure Taliban leadership into peace talks with the government and wants to demonstrate his independence from NATO and U.S. leadership.
But as Sookhdeo of the Barnabas Fund points out, NATO and U.S. funds underwrite the Afghan government, and it is a signatory to UN standards: It should be held accountable.

CLINTON SPEECH ENCOURAGES USE FOR MICRO-LENDING

Americans continue to struggle with high unemployment rates and fears of a turbulent economic future. Across the nation, worried citizens have gathered at town hall meetings, rallies and even Washington DC en masse. Desperately trying to voice their objections, to the crushing debt and weakened dollar, citizens fear our children will be enslaved to Communist China, a shameful fate. We have become extremely frustrated trying to understand why our voices are not heard on issues of illegal immigration and security at our ports and borders. Recently Arizona took the brave and correct step of passing into law a bill which supports law enforcement, in its fight against years of neglect, from the federal government.Almost immediately, cries of racism rang out from around the country. The Obama administration, which had previously been too busy to return urgent calls for help, from a desperate Governor Brewer, wasted no time calling the legislation SB 1070 misguided. Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security minced no words condemning the law; she used the carefully worded answer that the border was as secure as it ever was. Has the border ever been secure? Are you as sick as I am of people using semantics to avoid speaking plainly and honestly? Our voices are not heard. Our actions are dismissed or ridiculed. Why? What could be more powerful than the citizens of a nation rising in protest, demanding validation? There is more at play than most Americans understand. There is a structure, a hemispheric government, with far reaching goals and ideas. Washington DC is aware of its power and influence. They hope American citizens will not become so. Representing the Obama Administration, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a very telling speech in Ecuador on June 8, 2010. You would not have heard about it in the MSM. The corporate owned media has no real interest in informing Americans, only in distracting them. You can read the full transcript of her speech here. I wonder if Sec of State Clinton would have to guts to give this exact speech to a town hall meeting in Anywhere, USA. I would like to see her try and explain this to Americans standing in line at the unemployment office.

While American families struggle to find work, lose their homes and their ability to care for their children, the Obama administration is concerned about improving the lives of foreign families through micro-lending and foreign aid which he intends to foster using American dollars, drained from our economy, and paid in part, through remittances. So many of our government leaders speak to a broader constituency and seem not to differentiate between United States citizens and citizens, of other nations, in our hemisphere. This explains so many of the decisions they make which leave honest Americans at a loss and feeling unrepresented. The globalist mindset is completely different from the average American.

They think hemispherically, and globally.

So quick to give to the world America’s depleted bounty, globalists express care and concern for citizens of other nations while their own struggle and suffer. Of course, they expect us to keep paying for it. They call it Macro-economic equilibrium. It is steeped in the ideology that there cannot be freedom and social justice without redistribution.Understanding that every penny we give, we must first borrow; let Clinton’s own words define where her heart and aspirations lie. I contend it is not with the best interest of the American people.

[Governments need to put opportunity at the top of the agenda. And the United States will do its part. Traditional aid and assistance programs remains one part of our approach. We will continue to deliver almost $2 billion in assistance to some of the most impoverished places in our hemisphere.We will continue our focus through the Millennium Challenge compacts with developing countries. But we will also work to enhance trade. Trade between the United States and our partners reached more than $600 billion a year. And we have to continue to reduce barriers to commerce. Annual U.S. investment has reached $60 billion a year. And our contributions to multilateral institutions like the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank also invest billions more in the region. And workers in the United States send more than $50 billion a year back to the region in the form of remittances. So how can we build on those facts? Well, we’re looking at ways that we can use the leverage from remittances to help countries like Ecuador improve infrastructure and services. Now, on an individual level, remittances are sons and daughters that help mothers and fathers, the parents who sacrifice for their children. But taken together, that is a huge resource for a country. And so we’re looking at how we can develop new ways to enhance that money coming back, to give small businesses and communities a chance to prosper. We’re building new ways to leverage remittances to expand credit for development and infrastructure projects without taking anything from the hard-earned dollars being sent back to the families. We want to promote financial inclusion, and that’s why we’re using microfinance. We’ve seen microfinance not go just only to an individual but to provide innovative banking services in poor neighborhoods in Peru and providing health insurance and housing loans in Central America.Last year, President Obama announced a new Microfinance Growth Fund, which has committed more than $100 million to provide credit to individuals and small businesses, especially women.]If there is any question that this administration, along with former administrations, have no problem with illegal immigration, unsecured borders, issuing visas for foreign workers while Americans scrape for jobs, the words of Clinton should resolve all doubt. They are not only accepting of remittances draining the wealth out of our nation, they are endorsing it and looking for ways to exploit it.

And sounding like a true globalist, Clinton continues.

[But I am here with a very clear message: That the United States, the Obama Administration, President Obama and I personally are committed to a community focused on improving the material conditions of people’s lives, a community that recognizes and lifts up the diversity that we enjoy here in the Americas and translates it into a force for progress, because our hemisphere’s potential is vast.

So this is more than, at any time, a moment of opportunity for the Americas. But it is up to us to decide whether this moment will be seized or allowed to disappear. We have this moment of opportunity to consolidate democracy and economic growth, to play a role in solving regional and even global problems together, to deepen our progress and enhance our values, and to recognize we are interdependent and to use that interdependence to improve the future for our peoples. We want to elevate what is best about our shared past and rise above the acrimony that too often has interfered, even prevented us from moving forward.]It is essential to understand that when globalists speak of equality, they speak not of equal rights for citizens of the United States; they mean equality between states of the hemisphere. It is an embarrassment to the globalist, that the United States has such abundance, while other nations in the hemisphere have so little. In an effort to level the playing field, there must be redistribution. It matters not, whether it comes from giving foreign aid, arranging uneven trading practices to advantage poorer nations or leveraging remittances. All are a possibility for exploitation.Never mind the fact that the draining of our economy weakens the entire hemisphere. Globalists do not see American strength as a positive, but as a hindrance to social progressivism.
Macroeconomic equilibrium is the order of the day.

[President Obama and I share a strategic vision for our engagement in the hemisphere. We are working to build a network of partnerships for expanding opportunity and increasing social mobility. Now, we could endlessly debate the root causes of the lack of equality, but the way forward lies not in re-litigating the past, but in recognizing what works today to ameliorate inequality, to provide a model of what we can do that will give people not just hope, but the reality of a better life. There are also important models about how to attack the lack of opportunity directly. Conditional cash transfer programs in countries around the hemisphere have used welfare payments to advance health, education, and other development goals. Mexico and Brazil have both brought about significant reductions in poverty while raising school enrollment and improving health practices. Colombia has raised immunization rates and even increased the size of the average one-year-old in beneficiary households. And these programs are now being adapted for use in other countries, including my own, which has learned from the Brazilian, the Mexican, the Chilean, the Colombian experiences.]As the media continues propagandize for climate change and a green economy, as pundits try to convince our citizens that it is in our best interest to have a cap and tax Bill and as this current administration continues hell-bent on nationalizing key industries, keep Clinton’s following statement in mind.[Governments have also begun to improve their tax and budget practices. In Chile, money from the country’s copper fund has helped to pay for scholarships for children from the lower and middle classes. Peru has increased tax revenues to spend more on social programs and public goods like roads and schools. Brazil has one of the highest tax-to-GDP ratios in the world today, but the results speak for themselves. Brazil is an economy and a country on the move.]Such high praise for Brazil. What a shame Americans have other ideas to grow an economy and live as a free people. You can see the globalist’s dilemma.Why are our borders left unsecured? Why are illegal workers doing the jobs Americans would love to do, for a living wage? Why are visas still being given out by the thousands to foreign workers, while American children become homeless? Why the push to bring illegal aliens out of the shadows, and into the light?

Secretary Clinton’s next statement should answer many questions about why this administration, as with past administrations, continue to call for ‘comprehensive Immigration Reform’ which we are all aware means amnesty.[We need to ensure that more workers and businesses have access to jobs in the formal economy, reversing a steady increase in informality. In some places, it’s more than 50 percent. Now, informality means that workers remain isolated from credit and services. They often don’t pay taxes, and on average, they earn less. Businesses remain outside of regulatory structures and the tax system. Many of you have traveled throughout this region and elsewhere in the world. And it is amazing how hard people work. But often times, that work keeps them not in the economy but actually on the outside of the economy. And the society as a whole loses the benefits of that productivity]
In other words, they want the illegal aliens (in the shadows) to become legal workers, to add to the tax base, but also to encourage them to obtain credit, therefore paying interest, and enriching the banks.Unless Americans begin to accept that globalists are rampant throughout our government, our media, and our corporate world, we will never determine how to effectively elect American focused representatives. It said tersely:Communiqué de presse - 24.06.2010.Eighteen additional MEPs a step closer to starting work.

The 18 additional MEPs envisaged by the Lisbon Treaty are a step closer to starting work. The treaty change needed to enable them to do so was approved by Member State representatives at a brief Intergovernmental Conference on 23 June, after a green light from Parliament. The 18 MEPs can start work only after EU Member States have ratified the change (My emphasis)A Brief IGC - you're telling me. A tad secret too. I was well aware that the European Parliament was aiming to add a few party friends at public expense. That was expected. They even had a debate and a motion. Enlarging Parliament was part of the secret deal made as part of the secret negotiations for the Lisbon Treaty. (Secret because the public was not asked about it. It was an agreement between party political leaders who take extra public money without asking the public's permission.)All such agreements have to be agreed by the representatives of the nations. The public might like to ask: How would governments defend the extra expense at a time when governments of the PIGS are tottering trying to control their overspending and budget abuse.However, the Blitz Inter-Governmental Conference shot past me. I was glad I wasn't hit by the lightning. I attended the European Council on 17 June. I listened at the press conference. Not a whisper about an IGC. An obscure reference to one of its internal documents and necessary procedure is in the conclusions. For democrats debate is also a necessary procedure. By that I mean a debate between the politicals and the public, simply because a majority of the public has increasingly shown at elections its distrust for the politicals.(By politicals I mean the politicians, the parties and the political party systems that say they are representatives of the people but act against the people for their own career, financial or party advantage.)

So we have a secret, closed door European Council unwilling to have a public debate on vital matters of democracy. What does it do? Add further obscurity and secret meetings to avoid a public debate.Why? Were the politicians afraid they might get some awkward questions? It might seem a bit inopportune to publicise the increase in MEPs. People might also ask about why MEPs are also asking to spend more on assistants and other matters during a financial crisis. Others might askwhy more MEPs when at every election, more and more of the electorate is refusing to vote for any of them? At the Council building I did not find any communiqué later about this IGC. I asked the Council for the communiqué. I was told there wasn't one. An IGC took place with no one knowing about it. So-called democratic governments did not deem it necessary to tell anyone about the IGC. No press release was published after it took place. At least the EP debated it in public before grabbing more money.The IGC took place behind closed doors in the COREPER committee. This is a committee of civil servants called permanent representatives. They are not even politicians. They were talking secretly amongst themselves about something else that would affect the European public. Then they changed hats, declared an IGC, and pronounced a Treaty Change. That is the New Lisbon Democracy? Phew! Closed doors, civil servants making decisions on major issues, no press, no questions.An Inter-Governmental Conference used to mean something. Now it means a rubber stamp by bureaucrats. Thus the European Council is confirming its disdain for democracy. It is saying its version of democracy or rather its system is what we say it is. No open debates. Another word for that is autocracy.

I have a proposal. Now the Council has developed a lightning technique for European decisions, I would like to know if the national politicians can start to catch up on the backlog of duties. Some urgent Treaty implementations have been on ice for nearly sixty years.; The Six governments signed up to these promises in 1951 and 1957 and other States immediately on accession. These Treaty articles said surprisingly that the European Parliament should be European. That means Europe-wide elections under a single statute for all.A quick IGC could arrange that pan-European parliamentary statute. In other words the governments would forswear from cheating and having 27 national elections to the European Parliament. Each one is presently arranged according to national rules that curiously favour the main political parties in the State. A touch of honesty would therefore be helpful.The Treaty of Paris, the founding treaty of the European community and the two treaties of Rome all agree. There should be a single election where electors can vote for any candidate in any country of the Community. Each elector should have one vote not up to twelve as some are now allowed to have.The people must be free to choose to quote from Europe's founding Charter. Half a century ago, Schuman wrote: In the not too distant future it is necessary to provide for elections with direct universal suffrage of the members of the Assembly which will exercise the powers of control, in conformity with the Charter of the Community. Article 138 (of the Economic Community) moreover gives this Parliament the mandate to draw up such a such a draft electoral project. The statute must be uniform for all Member States. It is certain that people's consciousness of a united Europe would be intensified and be more physically manifested if it could be regularly affirmed by a vote across the entirety of Europe,(Pour l'Europe pp146-7)Come on Council of Ministers. We know you can do it! Try getting your democratic priorities right! And while the Council of Ministers is in the business of Blitz-IGCs, would it not be possible to give adequate notice so people could ask questions. And can the IGCs and the Council be open to the public as the Founding Fathers said they should be? Thank you, Council.

Was the alleged Russian spying, in part, a commodities or currency play?

When federal officials arrested 11 alleged Russian spies yesterday, it seemed natural that the accused agents would be interested in the CIA leadership, the Obama administration and Afghanistan. But who knew that they were goldbugs? James G. Rickards, senior director for market intelligence at Omnis, pointed us to the fact that the FBI complaint mentions that the global gold market was one of the key sources of interest of the Russian Federation and its intelligence agency, SVR.On a number of occasions, the SVR specifically indicated that information collected and conveyed by the New Jersey conspirators was especially valuable. Thus, for example, during the summer and fall of 2009, Cynthia Murphy, the defendant, using contacts she had met in New York, conveyed a number of reports to [Moscow] Center about prospects for the global gold market.According to the complaint, the SVR responded in November 2009 that the information on the gold market was very useful and had been forwarded to Russia's Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economic Development.

If Russia wanted information on the gold market, it would hardly be alone. In 2009, of course, gold jumped 24% in value, closing the year at $1,095 an ounce -- a price that seems quaint now that gold is over $1249 an ounce, but was still the biggest story in the financial markets of 2009.Murphy's alleged tips about the gold market must have been quite powerful. It's impossible to tell how they influenced Russian economic policy or thinking, but we can look at some of Russia's moves at the time and notice some striking trends that show that Russia dramatically reversed its stance on gold in late 2009.Before October 2009, Russia had been planning to sell nearly 25 tons of gold into the market. In November 2009, however, one month after Murphy's alleged report to the SVR about gold, Russia started stocking up on the precious metal. In November 2009, Russia's central bank bought more than $1 billion of gold from the foreign exchange market in order to better control the price of the ruble, central bank deputy chairman Alexey Ulyukayev told Reuters at the time. Russia also said at the time that it might buy gold from the state repository, Gokhran.Critics at the time noted that Russia's move into gold could be interpreted as a manifestation of disappointment with the U.S. dollar and U.S. economic policy under Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke; partly, this was because, as Russia was buying gold it also stopped buying U.S. agency mortgage bonds, the Fannie and Freddie bonds that packed over half of the Fed's balance sheet.

Of course, it's difficult to impute this shift solely to Russia (or Murphy's market tips). Yes, as of this year, the Russian central bank was still buying gold, loading up on 26.6 tons in the most recent quarter, bringing its holdings to over 668 tons. But Russia is hardly an outlier. The central banks of several countries have been loading up on the precious metal, including China, Venezuela and India, which on its own bought 200 tons in November 2009.The problem with all the gold buying, of course, is that it often reads as a global central bank reproach to several currencies, but particularly toward our troubled U.S. dollar. As the World Gold Council wrote in a February report on gold, currencies and the money supply, gold exhibits a strong negative correlation to the dollar.This is where central bank currency moves could get sinister. MEXICO CITY – The death toll in Mexico from flooding caused by former Hurricane Alex has risen to six, authorities said Friday.Nuevo Leon state Civil Defense Director Jorge Camacho said the victims died in and around the northern city of Monterrey.

President Felipe Calderon toured damaged areas of the city where the force of flood waters had tossed and flipped cars and pickup trucks, and nearly buried houses in mud and rocks.Calderon said 1,200 soldiers had been dispatched to help in relief efforts.The city was hit by heavy rain on Thursday that swelled the Santa Catarina river, which is normally dry.The flooding damaged bridges in Monterrey as well as railway tracks in the region.Alex hit Mexico's Gulf coast on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane before weakening into a tropical storm while moving inland. It dissipated on Thursday.Alex had earlier battered Central America, causing flooding and rock-slides that killed two people in Guatemala and two in El Salvador.

KINSHASA, Congo – A fuel tanker flipped over and exploded into flames in eastern Congo overnight, killing at least 220 villagers and wounding more than 100 who had rushed in to siphon leaking liquid from the vehicle illegally, the U.N. and local officials said Saturday.The truck was transporting fuel from neighboring Tanzania when it overturned at high speed late Friday in the village of Sange, around 20 miles (30 kilometers) north of the town of Uvira near the Burundi border. Sange is located between Uvira and the Congolese provincial capital, Bukavu, further to the north.After the accident, people came out and tried to siphon the contents of the tanker,said Madnodje Mounoubai, a spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping mission, which has rushed troops to help evacuate survivors.A fire started, and the people trying to siphon the fuel were killed or injured, Mounoubai told The Associated Press. Right now, we are talking about 220 dead and 111 wounded, but this is not the final toll. This is a very fluid situation.A U.N. helicopter has so far evacuated 35 wounded to Bukavu, Mounoubai said. Other peackeepers were taking more wounded to nearby hospitals by ambulance.Desire Yuma, a local Red Cross official in Bukavu, said Red Cross workers were still collecting charred bodies from the scene. The Red Cross says at 221 died and 214 were injured in the accident.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

Canadians upbeat on economy but edgy on finances: RBC

TORONTO (Reuters) – Canadians became slightly more positive about the economy in June, but were worried about personal savings and rising interest rates, a consumer confidence survey released by Royal Bank of Canada on Friday showed.The confidence report is one of several reports this week that have shown some cracks in popular sentiment toward economic recovery. A report from the Conference Board of Canada and a poll done by Angus Reid both showed consumer confidence falling in June.There's some indications of growing optimism on the overall state of the economy, said Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist at Royal Bank of Canada. But there are some growing concerns with respect to questions on personal wealth with the recent weakening in financial markets.In the RBC survey, sentiment about the Canadian economy swung higher, with 67 percent of respondents describing it as good, up from 54 percent in the last quarter.But respondents were less optimistic about the future with 55 percent saying they believe the national economy will improve over the next 12 months, down two points from March.Those offsetting factors left the overall RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index unchanged at 108 points in June, compared with a survey the bank did in March.

Worries about personal finances increased. The number of respondents who said their financial situation will improve in the next three months fell to 27 percent from 33 percent in March.Almost four in 10, or 37 percent, said they have less money left over after all their bills are paid, down 4 points from March. Twenty percent were concerned that this situation will worsen and felt their ability to save money for things like retirement or education was less than three months earlier.Two in three respondents, or 67 percent, said they were concerned about climbing interest rates, with 84 percent expecting increases over the next six months.The survey was taken just as the Bank of Canada raised interest rates for the first time since the onset of the recession.Economic data has been mixed in recent weeks, highlighting the fragility of the recovery. DAMASCUS, Syria – A senior Iranian official said Thursday that new U.N. sanctions do not ban Russia from delivering sophisticated air defense missiles to Iran as agreed under a 2007 contract, countering the Russian stance.Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the contract for delivery of the powerful S-300 air defense missiles to Iran was concluded before the U.N. Security Council approved new sanctions last month.The contract for Russian S-300 missiles was concluded before last U.N. Security Council (resolution). It is an old contract, therefore it has nothing to do with the ... (new) resolution. Moreover, it is a defensive weapon, Larijani told reporters on a visit to Damascus.Last month, the Russian government said the new U.N. sanctions prevent Russia from delivering S-300 missiles to Iran.Speaking to reporters in Damascus on Thursday, Larijani denied any tension between Iran and Russia but added there were some fluctuations in Russia's position toward Iran.

Netanyahu rules out apology to Turkey over deadly raid

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday praised secret talks with Ankara aimed at mending ties after a deadly raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship but ruled out any apology.On May 31, Israeli special forces stormed a flotilla of six ships carrying aid for blockaded Gaza, killing nine Turks on board one of the vessels and sparking international outrage and straining ties with one-time ally Ankara.Israel cannot apologise because its soldiers had to defend themselves to avoid being lynched by a crowd, Netanyahu said in an interview with Channel 1 public television.We regret the loss of life, Netanyahu said.The raid on the Mavi Marmara Turkish-owned ferry killed eight Turks and a dual US-Turkish citizen, prompting Ankara to recall its ambassador from Tel Aviv and cancel three planned joint military exercises.Netanyahu's remarks come two days after Trade Minister Benjamin Ben Eliezer and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu held secret talks in Brussels, to try and ease the feud sparked by the deadly raid.

On the surface of it they seem to have very little in common. The left claims to be progressive, embraces gay bars, abortions, feminism, worker’s rights civil rights, multiculturalism and obscene slogans. The Islamists throw acid in women’s faces, hang gays on every streetcorner and repress minorities and freedom of expression. This seeming contrast baffles many who demand to know how for example the left can champion Islamic regimes which mandate the death penalty for homosexuality. The answer is very simple. The people asking the question have mistaken the facade for the reality.The left is socially progressive only in its revolutionary phase. The Soviet Union, Castro’s Cuba and Communist China all had much the same view of gay people—that Iran does today. While gay writers in America campaigned for the USSR or Cuba, both those regimes imprisoned gay writers. Homosexuality was a criminal offense in the USSR until its actual fall. None of this bothered liberals in the West, who were happy to trek to Moscow, meet with Soviet leaders and blame the US for the Cold War. And then come home and talk about how intolerant the United States is.The USSR was happy to discuss the civil rights of African-Americans in the US. Liberals however did not care that most of the African-Americans who came to Russia early after the revolution wound up in Gulags or dead. This has been documented in books such as Black on Red: My 44 Years Inside the Soviet Union by Robert Robinson, an African-American engineer who came to find a job but was unable to leave for over four decades, while remaining constantly in fear for his life in a racist society.

Why would they.Shall we discuss worker’s rights? In the West, Communists championed unions. In the USSR, striking workers were meant with machine gun fire. In 1962, workers in the city of Novocherkassk tried to go on strike to protest pay cuts. They were gunned down in the street in front of city hall by Soviet troops. This mind you was in the days of the relatively moderate Communist regime of Khrushchev. Independent unions were illegal there. Just as they are illegal in the USSR.It’s possible to write volumes on this topic, but let’s just cut to the chase. An actual left wing dictatorship brutally represses everything they claim to fight for.While in the West, experimental artists were cheering on the USSR, in the USSR, such art was considered degenerate, just as it was in Nazi Germany. And the same went for literature. The USSR did push a sham feminism and occasionally abortion rights, not because they believed in it, but because they needed to expand the workforce. On the other hand divorces were hard to come by, and women who obtained them risked being expelled from the Communist Party. All the elements of political equality and civil rights that the left claimed to be fighting for, were in fact completely absent from Communist regimes. And that never bothered the left at all.

There has never been any contradiction between the left making common cause with Islamist movements and regimes that murder gay people. Because if the Left in the West ever gained absolute power, they would murder them too. For that matter 90 percent of the idiots attending their anti-war rallies would end up in front of a firing square. Does this sound far-fetched to you? Guess what, virtually every Communist regime did the same thing in its time.Do you know what the worst possible way to survive a Communist takeover is? It’s being a member of a right wing organization. Do you know what the second worst way is? Being a member of a left wing organization. Do you know what the third worst way is? Being a member of the Communist party before the takeover. Yes, the third worst thing to be when the Communists take over, is to be one of them. Because you’ll only get to live long enough to help wipe out the members of right wing organizations and the members of left wing non-Communist groups, before your own turn comes.

This is not just the norm for Communists, it’s a common pattern on the left. The French Revolution degenerated into horrifying massacres and endless executions in exactly that same way. First the radicals purge enemies of the state, then they purge each other, then they themselves are purged to make way for a more stable system. The end result is a repressive state that has wiped out anyone who might want to change things. Which was the goal all along.So the idea that the Left would have only moral objections to the Islamists is just plain naive. In fact the Left and the Islamists agree on the essential bullet points, including the part about using actual bullets and who they want to kill. As far as both Left Wing and Islamist leaders are concerned, 90 percent of their movements consist of nothing more than useful idiots good for nothing but cannon fodder. Don’t believe me? When was the last time, a Hamas leader sent one of his sons to blow himself up? It never happened. And never will.The Islamists and the Leftists have the same goal. Absolute power. The Left is on the same page as the Islamists. Just as they were on the same page as the Nazis. Just as they’re on the same page with every reactionary totalitarian regime in the world, except those that they think they can overthrow, or those that are allied with the Great Satan or the Imperialist Capitalist Powers.The Left tells its followers that they’re smarter and more moral than ordinary people. What it really means is that they’re dumber and more willing to sacrifice for its goals. The Islamists tell their followers that they’re braver and more religious than ordinary people. What they mean, is that their followers are suicidally stupid and easily led around the nose. The common denominator isn’t very hard to see. The Left is the Islam of the West. And Islam is the Left of the Middle East. But labels like that are virtually meaningless. Both are just totalitarian movements using gullible idiots following an ideology worked out by vicious greedy men to seize power. That is all there is to it in the end. The rest is just technique.The Left has no problem allying with Islam. Nor does Islam have a problem allying with the Left. That is because they both agree on their enemies and their objectives. They have more of a problem allying with people who actually want to be free, then they do with slaves and their slavemasters. Of course once in power, one would have to absorb or destroy the other. Just as Communism and Nazism united to consume Eastern Europe, with the inevitable consequence that once the job was done, one would have to destroy the other. Hitler successfully fooled Stalin and nearly destroyed the USSR with a first strike. Islam will likely do the same thing to the Left, just as it did in Iran.

The Red-Green Alliance
The Red-Green Alliance works because both are variations on a theme. The theme is totalitarian rule. It is not the Left that threatens Islam, nor Islam that threatens the Left—but free societies and individual freedoms. When such societies prove successful, then they particularly infuriate those who insist that they must be replaced with their totalitarian rule. These twin impulses, fear of a loss of control over their own societies, and a lust for power, is what energizes the Jihad of Islam and the Revolutions of the Left. Both want control, rather than freedom. And offer promises of Utopian tyrannies in exchange for freedom.Destroying Europe, America, Israel, Australia, Canada, etc is about power. Absolute power. And it is about putting out whatever light still shines in the West, for fear that it will spread. The light of freedom and civilization stands in the way of tyranny. Climate Science Hits New Desperate Low

Polls show people are no longer concerned by claims humans are causing global warming or climate change. They consistently place very low or are not even listed. Most still don’t understand the science, but a couple of cold winters raised doubts. Ironically, the fact the issue became political was frustrating for skeptical scientists, but is a blessing in disguise.People’s distrust of politics and politicians automatically reinforces the cold winters skepticism. Public distrust is reinforced by the realization that politicians see the exploitation of global warming as a chance for control, for increased taxes, or both. How long before politicians realize the public are simply not on board the climate change alarmism? It can’t be much longer as economies fail, jobs disappear, markets weaken, and deficits and debts soar. How long before the mainstream media report the problems with the science? How long before they recognize that the only science that is settled is how wrong the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports are? How long before we finally learn who leaked the emails?

The battle to perpetuate the false IPCC science is fighting a rearguard action with yet another consensus attack.A series of political strategies developed to promote the claim humans were causing global warming, including personal attacks on scientists who dared to question the science. They were marginalized by a standard political ploy that a consensus showed they were in the minority and therefore wrong. However, as Einstein said, No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.The battle to perpetuate the false IPCC science is fighting a rearguard action with yet another consensus attack. The original consensus claim obliquely referred to the people in the IPCC, but very few were climate scientists or scientists at all. A recent report notes that Mike Hulme, IPCC insider, Claims such as 2,500 of the world’s leading scientists have reached a consensus that human activities are having a significant influence on the climate’ are disingenuous,the paper states unambiguously, adding that they rendered the IPCC vulnerable to outside criticism.Why didn’t he speak earlier when it was being used to sideline skeptics? Of course, all this confirms what Richard Lindzen and John McLean said years ago. The Fourth IPCC Report included a subtle form of the consensus argument, The IPCC…brings together the world’s leading climate scientists and experts.John McLean disabuses this argument: The IPCC would have us believe that its reports are diligently reviewed by many hundreds of scientists and that these reviewers endorse the contents of the report. An analysis of the reviewers’ comments for the scientific assessment report by Working Group I show a very different and very worrying story.Or as MIT professor Richard Lindzen, former member of the IPCC said, It is no small matter that routine weather service functionaries from New Zealand to Tanzania are referred to as the world’s leading climate scientists. It should come as no surprise that they will be determinedly supportive of the process. Madhav Khandekar, a former employee of Environment Canada, and 2007 IPCC reviewer also criticized the notion that IPCC represents a scientific consensus.

Official Climate Science Hits A New Low
Now a new form of consensus argument has emerged. In a non-peer-reviewed article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences it claims, 97–98% of the climate researchers most actively publishing in the field support the tenets of ACC [Anthropogenic Climate Change] outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and (ii) the relative climate expertise and scientific prominence of the researchers unconvinced of ACC are substantially below that of the convinced researchers.The article was not peer-reviewed because one of the authors, Stephen Schneider, is a member of the Academy. It provides a list of the skeptics who don’t reach the level of qualifications of pro AGW people.I am thrilled and honored to be on the list (241st of 496). It claims to prove the skeptics are not as well-qualified or active in publishing therefore not as credible. Ironically, it completely debunks the original consensus argument because it provides a large list of well-qualified skeptics.There are errors and omissions in my entry and I understand for many others. I am listed with the National Resources Stewardship Project (NRSP), which was not a think tank as listed, lasted less than two years, and became defunct a couple of years ago. They list my PhD, but no date (1982) when it exists for others - information easily available from the University of London.
The most egregious idea is the limitation of 20 for publications to qualify as a climate researcher. It is an extension of the consensus argument and clearly chosen to push pro-AGW people above skeptics. One of the practices of publications by people at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) was listing multiple authors on papers to the point where it was clearly contrived to pad resumes. (They were not alone in this practice, as it is part of the academic advancement game.) Professor Wegman identified 42 people in his investigation of the infamous “hockey stick” as a coterie, all of who had published with Michael Mann and they all appear on multi-authored papers.

Control of the peer review process
A second problem identified by the CRU emails was the degree to which they controlled the peer review process to guarantee publication of their own work and ensure skeptical works were rejected. They did this to the point were they had editor-in-chief of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) James Saiers fired for publishing a skeptic’s article.This is interesting because I recall when GRL came on the climate scene. Up to that point there were few journals publishing climate articles and very few universities offering courses in climate. The only centers of climate were Reid Bryson’s at Wisconsin and Hubert Lamb’s at East Anglia. Climate was considered a subset of meteorology when it is the other way around. Climate data was only published by government agencies as monthly and annual summaries. Most climate articles were published in meteorology journals such the Royal Meteorological Society Journal. Neither Science nor Nature were interested in climate research or publishing climate papers. GRL was important because it was interdisciplinary, an essential item that acknowledges the generalist nature of climatology.The first mainstream climate journal was Climatic Change whose editor, Stephen Schneider, is probably the longest surviving editor of any journal. Sadly, he has always let his politics override decency and academic norms. As the late John Daly wrote; It would be fair to say that Schneider bears a large part of the responsibility for making Greenhouse the hysterical public issue it has become today. He even once joked that since Greenhouse had hit the public arena, he had become more of a politician than a scientist. (Many a true word is spoken in jest) His role in this latest disgrace is more of the same. The charade is over for all but the politicians and a few political scientists.

If you harbor the suspicion that a lot of voters are not bright enough to understand the issues, the candidates, or anything about those who hold public office, you are right.Considering the critical issues affecting the security, economy, and the future of the nation, it is clear that we are being ruled by a cabal in Congress who vote the Democrat Party line without regard for anything other than political self-interest.They got there, however, because of a solid core of voters who consistently demonstrate what dim bulbs they are.Assuming some of these morons read the newspaper or got their news from the Internet sites of what is called the mainstream media, a 2004 Pew Research Center poll found that five times more journalists described themselves as politically liberal than those who said they were conservative.That same year, a poll by the University of Connecticut found that journalists backed John Kerry over George W. Bush by a margin of two-to-one. Not much has changed since, except that daily newspapers keep going out of business; more than 120 dailies shut down in 2009.

Perhaps slobbering over Barack Obama and getting him elected might have contributed to a general sense of dissatisfaction among people whose I.Q. is higher than room temperature.For many years there has been an annual Battleground Poll conducted by a bipartisan polling organization known for its rigorous methodology. It seeks to determine how Americans self-identify themselves politically. One of its questions asks, When thinking about politics and government, do you consider yourself to be… Then the respondent can choose from very conservative, somewhat conservative, moderate, somewhat liberal, very liberal, or unsure/refused.The April 2010 poll results revealed that Americans overwhelmingly describe themselves as conservative. Over the years the percentage has never been less than 58% and, over the course of the years, 60.2% on average call themselves conservative.This raises the question, of course, why the Congress is filled with so many progressives or liberals, depending what they call themselves or why Ronald Reagan’s two terms and George H.W. Bush’s single term was followed by William Jefferson Clinton? He, in turn, was followed by George Walker Bush. Voters then turned to a completely unknown candidate with no experience beyond having been a community organizer, Barack Hussein Obama.

Nothing resembling logic explains this, but there is a factor that stands out in poll after poll and that is raging stupidity.A casual look at poll results in just the past month gives evidence of this. For example, despite the greatest man-made disaster of recent times, the BP oil spill, Rasmussen Reports revealed that 25% of adults nationwide had a favorable opinion of BP. Indeed, 6% had a very favorable opinion of BP.Rasmussen polls asking for opinions of Janet Napolitano, the Secretary of Homeland Security, revealed that 32% had a somewhat favorable opinion of this pinhead and 21% had no opinion regarding her performance in office. Asked about Attorney General Eric Holder, one in four voters (26%) still don’t know enough about Holder to venture any kind of opinion about him and 35% professed to hold a favorable view. This is the AG who criticized the Arizona illegal immigration statute without having read it.Ignorant of U.S. history and our Constitution, 28% of those polled said that civilian control of the military is bad for the U.S. The Founding Fathers, including James Madison, the chief author of the U.S. Constitution, advocated civilian control to ensure a stable democracy.Finally, for my purposes, there are the polling results regarding whether the nation is on the right or wrong track these days. As recently as late June 28% of likely voters said that the country is heading in the right direction! We have a Congress voting on bills, often in excess of two thousand pages, without knowing what they entail or the changes they will impose.We have a President who has taken barely a year and a half to double the national debt, crisscrossed the world to apologize for protecting huge portions of it from despotism, has nationalized one sixth of the economy with a hated healthcare act and is pushing for a Cap-and-Trade bill that will impose crushing taxes on all energy use. He also intends to raise our income taxes in the midst of a raging Recession.

You don’t have to be a statistician to figure out that somewhere between 25% and 30% of the voters are stupid beyond redemption, oblivious to events and trends that show a nation in deep trouble.I suggest this is the core constituency of the Democrat Party that has been pandered to from the days of Franklin D. MATAMOROS, Mexico – The sprawling remains of Hurricane Alex drenched much of northern Mexico on Thursday, paralyzing the major city of Monterrey. At least two people were killed when dry rivers roared to life and highways turned into rushing streams.Hurricane Alex ripped off roofs, caused severe flooding and forced thousands of people to flee coastal fishing villages as it hit land Wednesday evening in the border state of Tamaulipas. Power and telephone service were down in several towns and cities.The storm dissipated Thursday as it moved west to Nuevo Leon state, but it still caused major problems.The dry Santa Catarina river that cuts through Monterrey roared to life, sweeping away cars and parts of rickety, wooden homes built along its path.One man died when he was caught by a torrent of water along a six-lane highway, city Civil Protection director Pedro Trevino told Televisa Monterrey network. Another man was founded drowned by side of a creek.Nuevo Leon state Gov. Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz told the Televisa he had ordered all schools closed and appealed for people to stay home from all but essential jobs. The U.S. Consulate in Monterrey also closed due to the storm.De la Cruz said Alex had already dumped 16 inches (40 centimeters) of rain in some areas.Schools were also canceled in Tamaulipas state, where cleanup efforts began and flood waters started subsiding.

Crews swept up debris in Matamoros, a city across the border from Brownsville, Texas. Emergency officials still had to use boats to surveyed the damage in some neighborhood.Most of the 2,500 people who stayed in shelters overnight boarded buses back to their coastal villages Thursday after lining up for breakfast served by marines.The city is practically under water,said Saul Hernandez Bautista.But the most important thing is that there was no loss of life. We took important and opportune measures to evacuate people.Raging winds knocked down hundreds of trees, telephone posts and traffic lights in the Matamoros area and farther south along Mexico's northern Gulf coast. Belgian presidency sets parliament in its sights

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Belgium formally takes over the EU's six-month rotating presidency from Spain today (1 July), promising a slimmed-down but professional performance under the bloc's new Lisbon Treaty rules.It's clear that the transitory period between Nice and Lisbon is over, Belgian foreign minister Steven Vanackere said earlier this week.We intend to work a lot with the [newly empowered] European Parliament.The country, a founding EU member state, has plenty of experience as it heads into its 12th turn at the helm. Despite currently muddling along with a caretaker government, it insists it is capable of handling the bloc's ongoing economic troubles, which, officials admit, are liable to flare up again. September 11th [2001] took place under our last watch,said one senior finance official.I think we can say we know how to deal with crises.Economic issues are set to dominate the agenda, with a number of weighty files hanging over from the outgoing Spaniards. In particular, Belgian diplomats will need to use all their skills to broker a deal between member states and the European Parliament on the EU's financial supervisory package - the bloc's principle legislative response to the economic crisis.

Originally published by the commission last September, member states have since sought to weaken the measures while MEPs want to toughen them up in many areas, with the 1 January 2011 deadline for setting up the new supervisory bodies fast approaching.Legislation on hedge funds is on the agenda of next month's meeting of EU finance ministers, with the issue of third countries - or how to apply EU rules to funds from outside the bloc - flummoxing earlier attempts at securing a deal.

National governments are also under pressure to outline their country-specific targets in areas such as education and research spending by December, as part of the EU's 2020 growth strategy.The European Commission will come forward with legislative proposals this September on how to toughen the EU's national budgetary rules in the face of the region's recent debt crisis, while a taskforce under European Council President Herman Van Rompuy is set to produce its final report on the same subject in October.The job of marrying these proposals will fall at the feet of the Belgian presidency. MEPs have slammed the process as overly intergovernmental - Brussels jargon for decision-making made between national governments directly rather than via EU institutions. Foreign policy

Greek corruption worth €800 million a year

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - With Greece feeling the pressure from member states, the EU commission and the IMF to get a grip on its public spending, a transparency watchdog has estimated that the cost of bribes paid out by Greek citizens for public and private services is at least €800 million a year.Corruption is one of the main reasons why we have this economic crisis in Greece. It's not the only one, but it's a very important one, Aris Syngros, head of Transparency International's office in Greece, said on Thursday (1 July) during a hearing in the European Parliament.He presented the results of a survey carried out in the second half of 2009 which puts the cost of day-to-day corruption between €717 million and €857 million, an increase by some €40 million compared to results published a year before.The calculation is based on telephone interviews with a sample of 6,122 individuals, carried out between July and December 2009.The survey shows that the public sector in Greece is the most prone to corruption, with 9.3 percent of households reporting that they were asked to pay a bribe in order to speed up administrative processes, get fair treatment in hospitals or avoid a penalty for traffic offences. The average bribe paid in 2009 for public services was €1,355.But private companies and services also ask for bribes, as 5.3 percent of the people who participated in the survey admitted to have paid an average €1,671 to the private sector.The study does not include high level corruption cases or big tax evasion schemes, which would put the figures much higher, Mr Syngros stressed.

Corruption is not something we can't see or touch. It's real money, drained away from the real economy. Everybody speaks about recovery, growth, jobs, but without fighting corruption, this won't work,he said, urging the European Commission to put pressure on the Greek government to implement a far-reaching anti-corruption strategy.So far, the EU was like a spectator in a football match. We need a more active EU, that goes down on the field and is part of developing solutions.Back in Athens, Prime Minister George Papandreou on the same day once more acknowledged that funds are being wasted this very minute into a black hole of mismanagement, corruption and waste.He was speaking about spiralling public health costs, stressing that the solution was not extra money, but reducing wasteful spending. In 2009, Greece spent €11 billion on health and pensions and has cut the bill by €0.8 billion for spending in these areas this year.A commission official present at the hearing in Brussels pointed out that the EU-IMF bailout package of €110 billion included requirements on tax evasion and on the defence sector, which is prone to corruption in many other countries as well. The EU executive is now looking at ways to extend monitoring of anti-corruption efforts in all member states, as government and private corruption scandals ranging from defence contracts in Portugal to companies such as Siemens and Volkswagen continue to pop up, with Transparency International noting a worsening of the corruption perception in most EU countries.It's a question of credibility for the EU: if we present ourselves at international level as upholding a certain standard, we have to do more at home as well. We are now working on a mechanism of periodical reporting on anti-corruption efforts within the EU,a commission official said.Romanian centre-right MEP Monica Macovei, a former justice minister, also noted that the EU had no means of putting pressure on countries once they became members. We only ask candidate countries to meet certain criteria on justice reform and anti-corruption measures. But once they're in, there is nothing, no acquis, no pressure. Centre-right losing ground in EU Parliament

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The centre-right European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament is losing ground despite winning the last elections, a new study of voting patterns says.The EPP has been on the winning side in parliament 93 percent of the time, voting Yes or No when the majority of MEPs voted Yes or No, in the 792 votes that took place in the past year, the survey, carried out by academics in the VoteWatch project, said.The level is the same as in the assembly's previous sitting. But in the meantime, the Liberal group has moved into first place (97%) while the centre-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group has gone up from 90 percent to 92 percent.The developments come despite the fact the EPP was the biggest winner in last year's elections. The group won 265 seats compared to 268 last time around. But it would have had 290 seats if the British Conservatives had not walked away to form a new right-wing and anti-federalist grouping in the chamber. The S&D lost 16 seats last year and the Liberals lost three.The erosion of EPP power has come about because the Liberal group, called the parliament's kingmakers by VoteWatch, is siding more often with the S&D.The centre-left Liberal-S&D coalition has made its mark the most forcefully in the budget, environment and civil liberties areas. But the kingmakers tend to vote with the EPP on economics, industry, trade and development.The VoteWatch survey brought to light a number of other interesting facts about the EU assembly.While group whips have been doing their best to increase internal discipline, the political families still face problems in keeping their national delegations in line.

In the EPP, Belgian, Greek and Swedish MEPs are the most unruly, while German and Italian deputies are more likely to toe the line. The S&D for its part has trouble with British, Danish and Swedish members. The Liberals face problems with French and Irish MEPs. Overall, agriculture is the most divisive subject. MEPs' attendance rates have gone up across the board, except for parties that faced domestic elections in the past 12 months. Italian MEPs have tripled their rate so far, but are still bottom of the class, together with Romania and the UK.Meanwhile, MEPs on the fringes of parliament, in the eurosceptic Europe of Freedom and Democracy group and in the non-aligned basket - those MEPs who are not sufficiently numerous to form a group of their own - are the biggest thorn in the side of the Council of Ministers and European Commission.Non-aligned MEPs on average put 24 questions per member to the other EU institutions over the past year, compared to around 10 questions by EPP deputies and eight by the S&D.

Ashton hires Polish agent to beef up security

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton has hired a Polish secret service agent to be the main architect of internal security in the European External Action Service (EEAS).The agent, whose name is being kept under wraps, was parachuted into Brussels from Warsaw to begin work on 1 June and is expected to stay in the EU capital until the end of the year.His job is to chair a new working group that will design security protocols for the diplomatic corps, concentrating on physical security of EEAS buildings in Brussels and communications systems with the EU's 136 foreign delegations.The group, which meets once a week, also includes 15 or so delegates from the commission, the EU Council, the Belgian EU presidency, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. They are mostly diplomats, but not all of them, a contact in the EU institutions said.They come from those member states who are the most interested in security. In setting this up, you need expertise and experience.

The EEAS, which is expected to start work in October or November, will handle classified documents, such as reports from the EU Council's CP931 working party on terrorism or the EU states' SitCen intelligence-sharing bureau.The Council and commission already have detailed security protocols, but these are not water-tight. EU diplomats are fond of telling the anecdote how a Russian diplomat once had to be escorted out of a meeting of the Political and Security Committee in the Council after wandering in by mistake.The Ashton appointment is a mini-coup for Warsaw.Some Polish politicians, such as centre-right MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, have in the past complained that old member states, such as France, Germany and the UK, have too much power in the fledgling EEAS. But the Polish administration has kept quiet about its new EEAS security role because it wants to be considered a reliable partner by its EU peers.Post-Communist and post-Soviet EU countries see themselves as experts on security matters due to their experience in the Cold War.China and Russia are both security threats in Brussels. But the exposure earlier this week of 11 alleged Russian spies in the US, and the earlier case of Herman Simm, an Estonian official who passed EU and Nato papers to Moscow, have highlighted Russia's post-Cold-War espionage efforts.Former Estonian prime minister Mart Laar, who helped organise a clean-out of KGB elements in Estonia's security structures in his two periods in office in the 1990s, said the US arrests and the Simm case are wake-up calls for Europe.We must learn that this is a reality. This is what Russia is for, he told EUobserver in an interview.You don't need big [counter-intelligence] services. Effective services can be quite small. EU ties banker bonuses to performance

Bankers' bonuses are to be limited following a deal agreed between the European Parliament and EU member states on Wednesday (30 June).According to the compromise between the two sides, bankers could be awarded no more than 30 percent of a bonus right away.Half the immediate payment would have to be paid in shares or other securities that, crucially, are linked to the bank's long-term financial performance.
The rest of the bonus would be delayed for three to five years.For very high pay-outs, bankers could be awarded no more than 20 percent of the bonus.The agreement, a political deal between member states and MEPs that must still be endorsed next week by the plenary session of the parliament, aims to appear to punish the banking industry for its role in the economic crisis and to end a bonus culture that critics say encouraged reckless risk-taking.Golden parachutes, or exorbitant severance packages for executives, will also be restricted.A number of EU countries, including the UK, home to the City of London, a major financial centre, have already imposed bank bonus limits, but Wednesday's agreement covers all 27 member states.It also covers hedge fund managers, who until now have avoided rules on bonuses.Bankers will still be able to receive multi-million-euro pay-outs however, as the new rules impose no restrictions on the size of bonuses.Domestic regulators will be in charge of applying the rules on the national scene.Fines or other penalties can be imposed on financial institutions if they flout the rules.

WTO chief tells states to stop chit-chat on Doha

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - WTO chief Pascal Lamy has told the EU, China and the US that they must start making real concessions in the Doha round of multilateral trade talks due to growing business uncertainty.The Frenchman made the comments at the European Business Summit in Brussels on Wednesday (30 June), flanked by the EU's trade commissioner Karel De Gucht, the US ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke and his Chinese counterpart, ambassador Sun Zhenyu.The truth is that we are stuck, because Mike, Karel and Zhenyu are trading words not concessions, Mr Lamy said bluntly during a jackets-off debate which saw all sides call for others to go further.The behind-the-scenes glimpse of the nature and personalities involved in the drawn-out trade talks may not have instilled much optimism among the hundreds of business executives sitting in the audience, although some progress appears to have been made at the recent G20 leaders' meeting in Canada.I was pleasantly surprised by what happened in Toronto,Mr De Gucht said on the gathering, where leaders talked for an hour and a half on trade, indicating to each other what was politically possible. I see an overall awareness ... that we need to conclude this.Hopes will now focus on the next G20 leaders' meeting this November in South Korea, with a view to eventually wrapping up the agreement next year.For the US, any deal must provide a badly needed stimulus to the country's struggling economy, which is slowly clawing its way out of recession, amid strong doubt over the package as it currently stands.

For it to be a stimulus it has to create new opportunities for trade,said ambassador Punke, whose country is frequently blamed for the breakdown of talks in 2008.The tariff cuts being offered by advanced developing countries are small and over a long period of time ...so that we don't even know what we will get.The thinly veiled criticism of the Chinese position prompted ambassador Sun to question the political willingness of some countries to move forward, with US mid-term elections at the end of this year frequently cited as a barrier to immediate progress. Many Democrats are traditionally wary of free trade agreements, and are unlikely to support much discussion on the subject until their seats are secured in November.With roughly 80 percent of the deal supposedly negotiated, it is clear that securing agreement on the final 20 percent will prove difficult, with emerging nations such as China stressing the round's original aims of first and foremost improving conditions for less developed nations. But nine years on from the start of the Doha talks, the global economic environment has changed dramatically, with Western countries saying that emerging giants such as Brazil, India and China can no longer be treated in the same way.As the speakers sweated under the lights, Mr Lamy proffered some more advice to the warring sides, urging them to invest some political capital in a deal that he said would ultimately create a net benefit, even if some particular constituencies lost out.Spend half your time negotiating, and the other half explaining to your domestic constituencies what you are doing,he suggested to the panelists.

The IAF Flight School held a ceremony Thursday for its 160th class of graduates. Defense Minister Ehud Barak was there, as were President Shimon Peres and IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi.Barak noted the high number of immigrants in this graduating class. 20% of the new pilots were not born in Israel.These immigrants are what make us most proud today, he said.You are the true Zionists, and you prove how much the wave of immigration from the former Soviet Union contributed, and continues to contribute, to the country.Barak took the opportunity to call for peace talks. Our hand is extended in peace to our neighbors. Feiglin Ascends Temple Mount to Pray for His Son

Moshe Feiglin ascended the Temple Mount on Thursday to pray for his son David Yosef, who was seriously injured in a car accident on Monday. David Yosef, 16, was hurt while returning home from a volunteer shift at the Alfei Menashe fire station.The public has been asked to pray for David Yosef ben [son of] Faige Perel.Moshe Feiglin is the head of the Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership) faction within the Likud party. The nationalist Manhigut Yehudit works to influence the Likud from within.

Jews were banned from the Temple Mount earlier this year due to Muslim riots, but have been allowed to ascend to the site this week. Dozens of worshippers ascended the mount on Tuesday, which was a fast day, The Seventeenth of Tammuz, to commemorate the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem that culminated in the destruction of the Temple three weeks later on the Ninth of Av.Groups were allowed to enter the Temple Mount area on Wednesday as well. Once Again, Russia Refuses Israeli Culture Center

Bits and pieces of information on Russia’s Foreign Minister’s visit to Israel continue to emerge. It has now been learned that Lavrov turned down yet another Israeli request for an Israeli culture center in Novosibirsk.Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has been trying to obtain permission for the establishment of the cultural center in Russia’s third-largest city. The center would be run by Nativ, the bureau engaged in promoting Aliyah and other Jewish concepts among Russian Jewry. However, because Nativ was once an intelligence-gathering organization, Russia has said no. Haaretz reports that the latest refusal came this week when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met in Israel with his Israeli counterpart, Lieberman. Though Lieberman guaranteed Lavrov that Nativ is not involved in any espionage work in Russia, and said the goal is only to prevent assimilation of Jews, Lavrov turned him down.Nativ, which operates out of the Prime Minister's Office, was founded in 1952 by David Ben-Gurion, who wished to maintain contact with Jews behind the Iron Curtain. Only in 1989 did it begin to operate openly, later receiving official Russian permission to operate in Russia.Some 20 Nativ emissaries and several mobile consuls currently operate in 11 regions of the former Soviet Union. Nativ’s activities center around four regions: Caucasus-Asia, Ukraine-Moldova, Russia-Belarus, and the Western Baltic area, which includes Germany.

Lieberman has said in the past that Nativ is the only organization representing Israel throughout the former Soviet Union: There are other Jewish organizations, but they work to perpetuate the Jewish communities there. Nativ’s goal is to stand for the State of Israel and to increase Aliyah... There are those who want to bury Nativ – but I believe the opposite should be the case. All the other organizations, including the Jewish Agency – except for Birthright – are dealing with little things, looking for ways to occupy themselves… The Jewish organizations compete among themselves, and we must not let that happen – and Nativ should be the address to stop it.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

As usual, as the UN creates mythology and pulls moral codes from a sea of soiled international play books, we see them pushing for New Human Rights for Maternal Health so they can empathetically slaughter more babies worldwide. Just this week I talked with a Representative from Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute www.c-fam.org about this aggressive push backed by Obama, Hillary and our cherished abortion fans.Here is the bottom line presented to the UN Human Rights Council by The Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR). The report talks about all the unsafe abortions, physical and mental health needs of women, the need for non-discrimination and a high standard for mental and physical health. Naturally, to achieve all this respect for women, we need to drum the international beat and push for an international movement and then law, talking of genuine human rights.Is the UN open to recommendations and opinions of any pro-life groups, looking at rights of all, including Babies? No. As with all other pro-abortion groups, the OHCHR deceitfully attaches a variety of rights to women and the need to change and challenge laws. Samantha Singson outlines their position beautifully in her article.As part of their obligation to reduce maternal mortality, OHCHR claims that ensuring women’s access to maternal health and other sexual and reproductive health services may require addressing discriminatory laws, policies, practices and gender inequalities in health care and in society.

To make sure this kind of maternal respect is happening the OHCHR demands the creation of monitoring mechanisms.Anyone ever heard that before? If they get their way, all women everywhere could hide behind their race, disability, stress, inconvenience, desire and imagined mental health issues to have one abortion after another. Those who will dare to stand up for the God given rights of ALL human beings, including those in the womb, are racists, hate human rights, and want suffering for the world. We have to be brought low and contained with draconian tracking and laws, monitored by the UN.The UN blows my mind. They talk about endless human rights issues, such as the continued push for rights of the child and rights of the mother.Never mind the real rights of women worldwide that are violated every day in Islamic countries. They couldn’t possibility comment and act on the forced clitorectamies to women by many Muslims, endless honor killings against women, lack of ability to drive, to work and dress as they want, beatings that are allowed and even guided under sharia law and being valued in Muslim Holy books as half the worth of a man. The UN couldn’t notice or act on all this horror against women because they are seduced, intimidated and compromised by dozens of Muslim lead countries controlling tone and movement throughout the UN. This has never been about the rights of women. It is the push of progressive leftists hiding behind a sea of empathy words, to control population and groups of people throughout the world.Margaret Sanger who started Planned Parenthood was a huge fan of Hitler and the Nazi party. She loved Eugenics and wanted to see African Americans killed off with abortion. That was the main reason she formed Planned Parenthood, to target minority groups and get them to kill their own children. How tragic and sad to see that she has succeeded in her goal. Population rates are going down with Blacks in the US because so many abort their babies.

No one wants to be void of compassion, but when you make the very definition of life relative you rob its God given worth. Now the killing fields can flourish. You might as well not only murder babies but grab up those pesky seniors in the way as well. Did I say the disabled and criminal population??? When life becomes a widget of diminishing worth, you have just walked into to Nazi Germany.Life is unique, precious and given by God. Seniors, babies of all ages, disabled and all people’s real rights for freedom, expression and life must be protected.

It is time for President Obama to take a big hike

Stock markets and consumer confidence have fallen to new lows in June in reflection of a massive lack of growth in jobs in the private sector. The Conference Board just reported that consumer attitudes dropped from 62.7 in May to 52.9 in June. Many are speculating now that we are in the beginnings of a depression and certainly not recovering in housing, jobs and markets.While the markets and economy is bucking widely to the out of control spending and lack of leadership with the Obama administration and this congress, we see oil splashing up on Gulf shores, another reflection of profoundly, incompetent leadership and intervention by Obama.With the oil spill disaster and economy we see Obama’s worldview and priorities which lead and reflect all his responses and strategies. With him, every disaster and national challenge has to be manipulated and submit to his transforming passion of Marxist/socialism, accumulation of power and control. Just look at the Gulf disaster Obama blender or reality.The explosion happened in April. Obama responded and went to the Gulf 12 days later. Governor Bobby Jindal and a host of other concerned leadership called for immediate help. Jindal requested that the Government build emergency berms to block the oil from flooding the Louisiana beaches. The Obama blender response was to have an Environmental impact study done. They wanted to see what the Internet had to say.

Thirteen countries offered state of the art equipment and money help. The Obama blender said no, hiding behind the Jones act, which could have easily been set aside as Bush did with Katrina. This was another sham of leadership by this President.We saw the Coast Guard order 16 barges to stop pulling up oil due to unsatisfactory, mystery visits where they couldn’t confirm enough fire extinguishers and life preservers. Due to the emergency of needing to protect what was left of the Gulf economy and shores how is it that all the barges were ordered to stop and how is it that our President didn’t immediately weigh in and get them and the Coast Guard back on track? I’ll tell you why….because Obama has never been on the track to lead, fix and serve those in desperate need in the gulf to begin with! Finally, we saw, due to the environmental impact study that Jindel couldn’t build berms because our Government was concerned about pulling special sand from an island and they were unclear what that would mean for that island’s sand. Can I please say what is on my mind? WHO GIVES A FLYING PIECE OF CRAP WHAT HAPPENS TO THAT SAND? THIS IS AN EMERGENCY AND LOUISIANA NEEDS THE BERMS.Enough of the Gulf disaster, only made massively bigger due to Obama’s total incompetence and environmental agenda! Now, our economy is tilting like the leaning tower of Pisa. The Housing market continues to tank. Job growth is way lower than many expected, stocks are tumbling and we seem to be drifting aggressively into the toilet bowl of severe recession if not depression. Again, this is all because we have a President and congress who could care less about our economy, health and recovery.

Obama and this congress have spent and tied up trillions of dollars in stimulus bills, which we won’t see the benefit from and forced health care which generations will be trapped into for decades. The fact that our economy and markets are crashing plays right into Obama and his team’s hands. They must have cradle to grave controls over us, health, economy, businesses, schools, speech, votes, entertainment and religion. They need endless crises they can manipulate like Pimps to create the new take over regulations, taxation schemes and blame campaigns against conservatives! Obama and his progressive leadership are working on all of these in rare form.There are tons of reasons why Obama should be impeached or resign. He is a complete failure in ability to lead our nation according to our laws, our constitution and our traditions. He is a complete usurper and obviously wasn’t born in the United States. Where is the birth certificate? Even a former high up election official, Tim Adams, who had worked in Hawaii said there was no Obama birth certificate there. Gee, what a shock! Our economy is going down the toilet due to Obama and this congress spending trillions of dollars and fixing zero economic problems! Finally, along with all the national security blunders and kiss up to Islam, he is continuously demonizing and betraying Americans and conservative leadership. Just last week Mexico joined the Obama administration in filing suit against Arizona’s Immigration Law. Oil prices hovered near $73 a barrel Friday as investors awaited the monthly U.S. jobs report for clues about the strength of global crude demand.By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was down 10 cents to $72.85 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.The contract dropped $2.68, or 3.5 percent, to settle at $72.95 on Thursday as a series of reports revealed more negative news about the U.S. economic recovery and heightened fears of a double-dip recession.The government said jobless claims rose more than expected last week, construction spending declined in May and the number of buyers who signed contracts to purchase homes dropped in May to the lowest level on record dating from 2001.

NEW YORK – Within hours of his capture, U.S. prosecutors say, Russian spy suspect Juan Lazaro admitted his name was an alias.So who is he? Lazaro wasn't saying — not even for his son, court papers say.Lazaro's admission — and defiance — was revealed Thursday by federal prosecutors arguing against bail for him, his wife and another couple with children. The U.S. government claims those defendants and seven others were part of a spy ring on assignment to infiltrate America's cities and suburbs for the Russian intelligence service.Their cover was so deep, there is no inkling at all that their children who they live with have any idea their parents are Russian agents, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz told U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald L. Ellis.Farbiarz warned that a powerful and sophisticated network of U.S.-based Russian agents was eager to help defendants in the spy ring flee the country if they were released on bail.There are a lot of Russian government officials in the United States who are actively assisting this conspiracy,he said.

The judge ruled that two defendants, Cynthia and Richard Murphy, should remain in custody because there was no other way to guarantee they would not flee since it's unclear who they really are. But he set bail of $250,000 for Lazaro's wife, prominent Spanish-language journalist Vicky Pelaez, a U.S. citizen born in Peru, saying she did not appear to be trained as a spy. The judge required electronic monitoring and home detention and said she would not be freed before Tuesday, giving prosecutors time to appeal.The judge ruled after Farbiarz said the evidence against the defendants continued to mount and the case was solid.Judge, this is a case where the evidence is extraordinarily strong,Farbiarz said. Prosecutors don't get cases like this very often.The decision to set bail for one defendant came as police on the island nation of Cyprus searched airports, ports and yacht marinas to find a man who had been going by the name Christopher Metsos, who disappeared after a judge there freed him on $32,500 bail. Metsos failed to show up Wednesday for a required meeting with police.
