Told he would have to wait his turn, the man left but returned minutes later and gunfire erupted.The man, wearing a black cap and baggy pants and shirt, rushed by a table separating him and Giffords, raised an arm, and then came shots, Villec, 19, told The Associated Press.Firing a semiautomatic weapon, the gunman targeted Giffords as she met with constituents around 10 a.m. Saturday outside a busy Tucson supermarket. Authorities said Arizona's chief federal judge and five others were killed and 13 people were wounded, including the Democrat lawmaker.He also fired at her district director and shot indiscriminately at staffers and others standing in line to talk to the congresswoman, said Mark Kimble, a communications staffer for Giffords.He was not more than three or four feet from the congresswoman and the district director, Kimble said, describing the scene as just complete chaos, people screaming, crying.
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said the rampage ended only after two people tackled the gunman.He was definitely on a mission, said Villec, a former Giffords intern.Police say the shooter was in custody, and was identified by people familiar with the investigation as Jared Loughner, 22. U.S. officials who provided his name to the AP spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release it publicly.His motivation was not immediately known, but Dupnik described him as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action, Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.In the hours after the shooting, Palin issued a statement in which she expressed her sincere condolences to the family of Giffords and the other victims. During his campaign effort to unseat Giffords in November, Republican challenger Jesse Kelly held fundraisers where he urged supporters to help remove Giffords from office by joining him to shoot a fully loaded M-16 rifle. Kelly is a former Marine who served in Iraq and was pictured on his website in military gear holding his automatic weapon and promoting the event.

I don't know this person, we cannot find any records that he was associated with the campaign in any way. I just don't see the connection. The shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and some of her top aides has left America shocked. Not only for the violence against an elected leader but also for the fact that it happened in broad daylight.Politicians from all sides expressed outrage and sadness.I am horrified by the senseless attack ... an attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve,said Republican House speaker John Boehner. This is a sad day for our country.The recent heated political atmosphere in America has led many to fear for the safety of elected officials. And the attack on Giffords is not without precedent. America has a long history of attacks on its leaders, whether from deranged loners, politically motivated assailants or even cults. They have spanned the full gamut from rightwingers to leftist revolutionaries. The last congressman to be murdered was Leo Ryan who was killed during the Jonestown cult massacre in Guyana in 1978.Few are expecting the circumstances surrounding the attack on Giffords to be as bizarre as that. But it is certainly no less disturbing set against a background of heated rhetoric. Much debate has painted American politicians in general, and the federal government in particular, as somehow being a force for evil. Indeed many rightwing commentators have portrayed President Barack Obama and senior Democrats as socialists or even Marxists bent on fundamentally changing the American way of life. Some fringe groups and conservative politicians have even hinted at resorting to illegal measures in order to defend the nation from what they see as a dire threat. Giffords's own offices were vandalised after she voted for healthcare reform.
Elsewhere, there has been a rash of attacks on government targets from individuals pursuing extremist aims. Last year in Texas Joseph Stack flew a private aeroplane into a branch of the Internal Revenue Service tax authorities. He left a rambling suicide note that contained numerous anti-government statements. Neo-Nazi James von Brunn shot dead a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington in 2009. In the same year a doctor who performed abortion was killed in Kansas City and several incidents occurred in which people with links to white supremacists killed people or were found with explosives caches.Gun-rights advocates across America have made a point of turning up to some political events carrying weapons, including powerful rifles, in order to demonstrate their right to bear arms. That is a fact that might become relevant given that the shooting of Gifford occurred in public at an open meet and greet political event.The rise of political extremism in recent years has been tracked by the Southern Poverty Law Centre which issued a report in 2009 that warned of rising numbers of potentially violent right-wing militia groups. The numbers of hate groups grew from 602 in 2000 to 926 in 2009, the organisation has found.Attacks on American politicians can happen at any time, anywhere and seemingly for any reason. In 1981 Republican President Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley in Washington DC. Hinckley later claimed he was acting out of a desire to impress the actress Jodie Foster. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and has been in psychiatric care ever since.
The deaths that plagued the Kennedy family also came about via a variety of causes. The 1963 murder of President John F Kennedy has long been the subject of endless and fruitless conspiracy theories. Officially the assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, acted alone on a deranged one-man mission. But many people believe in a greater plot. Kennedy's brother Robert was killed while campaigning in 1968 by Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan, who made an antisemitic diatribe during his trial.Many other presidents and top elected leaders have also had attempts on their lives. Gerald Ford, who was only president for three years, faced two. The first was a shooting attempt by a one-time follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson. The second, just three weeks later, was a leftist revolutionary who had become fascinated by the Patti Hearst kidnapping. The suspect identified by media as having been arrested in the Giffords shooting is Jared Lee Loughner, aged 22. Sharia law should be banished from any court in America, unless we plan to support beatings and murders. Just one of the many things Sharia law states is that an Islamic person who leaves Islam is now considered apostate and should be killed. Gays should be executed and thieves should have their hand cut off while wives can be beaten for many different reasons by their husbands. Isn’t that splendid.Sharia law is the exact opposite of our US constitution, Judeo Christian values and heritage of respect and freedom. It reads more like an Adolph Hitler rule book, yet that is what Islam’s skeletal, legal and cultural core run by. There is no freedom that I can see anywhere in Islamic countries. It is only an ancient, male controlled Governmental and political system, hiding behind words and structure of a Religion Islam. There is nothing liberating, life enhancing or freedom producing about it. We continue to hear Imams and Muslim apologists talking of the wonders of Islam’s ability to live and breath in safety and pluralism in America. They aren’t hostile to Jews and Christians, yeah other non believers. Yet, when one of our States, Oklahoma votes against Sharia or International law being used within their courts, they are sued and challenged by Muslims and Muslim groups. Shockingly, Judge Vicki-LaGrange said the overwhelming elections against using Sharia would be suspended, pending a hearing, where she would hear arguments against the vote, then make a decision. What is not to understand? The vast majority of Oklahomans voted against using Sharia. How is that not clear?
Let us talk of more pluralistic and open minded Muslim moments. We saw the near successful car bomb in Times square a few months back; Christmas 2009 we saw the underwear, Islamic bomber nearly blow up a plane on Christmas; Before that we saw the Fort Hood Islamic killer wipe out 14 people at Ft. Hood. The threats and attacks have been non stop since 2001. In the meantime, we see law suits against Oklahomans and a Judge blocking a law the vast majority of the people put in place against the nightmare of Sharia. Frankly, the whole country and every court system in it should banish Sharia law period. On top of all this idiotic drama we hear the endless push and movement to build the 13 story Islamic center at ground zero. Naturally we hear the pluralistic and multi religious emphasis that will represent the presented core of this internationalist and pluralistic effort. There is only one teensy weensy problem. That is a lie from the pit of hell. The only Religion that will be pushed on New York and the world is Islam. There will be no Synagogue and Lutheran Church hidden within its many floors. If allowed, this will be nothing more then an attractant for all radicalized Muslims worldwide, a training center for terrorism in America and a major flip off of the middle finger to all of Americans, Christians and Jews.It will be a celebration of the attack on 9/11 again and again like the movie Groundhog Day. Apparently that is what many compromised 50 yard liners, who believe we have gotten what we deserved from Islamics, want.
I couldn’t help but notice yet again, another brazen slaughter of Christians leaving a service on January 1st in Egypt. 21 Christian Coptics were murdered leaving a new year’s mass while 90 were injured. The cowardly and lying media manipulated the presented news of this horrific act of Islamic terrorism. Many in the headline news said the attack was against Muslims and Jews, thus hiding the truth, which was all murdered and injured were Christians not Muslims. It was nothing but another boring, murderous jihad against Christians or Jews, nothing else. It even gets richer when looking at some of the Arabic news media. According to Newsmax.com, Almesryoon.com (Arabic news) said the Coptic worshipers are “supported by Israeli Mossad’ and that was behind this attack. Apparently, this contrived and promoted fantasy would justify to the Arabs and rest of the world that the Coptic Christians brought the murders on themselves…..no…..the killings…….no the righteous, Muhammad directed executions…..yes. They were infidels who deserved to die.I have interviews IQ Al-Rasooli, a native born Iraqi, Arabic speaking intellectual, raised Muslim, who has found in exhaustive studies of the Koran, Hadith and going back only into Islamic documents and Arabic sources, that Islam is absolutely false and most dangerous. G20 to tackle food prices as countries reassure

SEOUL (Reuters) – The world's biggest economies are working to find ways to bring down soaring food prices, a G20 official said on Friday, as top exporter Thailand vowed to keep rice supply steady and avert a repeat of the 2008 food crisis.Global food prices hit a record high last month, outstripping the levels that sparked riots in several countries in 2008, and key grains could rise further, the United Nations' food agency said this week.Policymakers are concerned that, if unchecked, rising food prices could stoke inflation, protectionism and unrest.High food prices and unemployment were blamed for a second day of rioting in Algeria Friday with police deployed around mosques and authorities suspending football matches.Rhee Chang-yong, who represents South Korea at the G20, said working-group talks were under way aimed at improving global cooperation to resolve food security problems.France is emphasizing food security. Last year, wheat futures prices rose 47 percent, buoyed by bad weather including drought in Russia and its Black Sea neighbors. U.S. corn rose more than 50 percent and U.S. soybeans jumped 34 percent.The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said in a report Wednesday that sugar and meat prices were at their highest since its records began in 1990. For wheat, rice, corn and other cereals, prices were at their highest since the 2008 crisis.During that crisis, riots broke out in countries from Egypt to Haiti. NEW YORK (Reuters) – Snow fell across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states on Friday, bringing several inches of fresh accumulation to a region that has scarcely dug out from the Christmas weekend blizzard.The latest winter storm will drop snow from the Great Lakes east to the Atlantic seaboard and New England throughout Friday and into early Saturday, forecasters said.The Northeast could see one to five inches of snow from Maryland north into Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, forecasters said. Two to four inches accumulation was likely in New York City, they said.One to three inches were forecast for Philadelphia, Wilmington and Atlantic City, according to Accuweather.com.Accuweather.com senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said Northeast weather would feature a great deal of little storm systems or disturbances running around through the weekend.Pretty much anybody in the Northeast is fair game for a sneak attack from a coating of snow into Sunday, he said. It is almost like atmospheric guerrilla warfare.While not as powerful as the late December blast, this storm was snarling travel, with delays of nearly three hours inbound for LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports and slightly less at Newark Liberty International.

Flooded-out Australians go home to mud, mess, rain

BRISBANE, Australia – Residents of waterlogged northeast Australia returned to homes caked in sludge and nervously watched the skies for more rain Friday while waiting for swollen rivers to recede.The worst appeared to have passed from flooding that covered an area the size of France and Germany in murky brown water for longer than a week, but torrents still posed dangers in partly-submerged towns in Queensland state and progress on assessing damage and rebuilding was slow.On Friday, police banned boats from the swollen river coursing through the city of Rockhampton that is expected to remain near its peak for another 10 days.The scope of the damage is not yet known, and fully repairing all of the infrastructure washed away or ruined could take years, the army general heading recovery efforts said.We still don't know what it looks like underwater, Maj. Gen. Mick Slater told reporters in Rockhampton, where people for days have waded through water that was waist-deep in places. Major roads, rail lines and bridges are all damaged, but we don't know yet how much.
Australia's worst flooding in some 50 years was caused by tropical rains that fell for days, starting just before Christmas. Some 1,200 homes in 40 communities were inundated and almost 11,000 more have water damage. Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated, and police have reported 10 deaths in swollen rivers or floodwaters in Queensland since late November.The flooding shut some 40 coal mines in the state, pushing up global prices, and has hurt wheat, mango, sugarcane and other crops. State Premier Anna Bligh has said the price of rebuilding homes, businesses and infrastructure, coupled with economic losses, could be as high as $5 billion.Heavy rain fell Friday and could last through the weekend, the Bureau of Meteorology said. The rains aren't expected to increase flooding but could delay recovery and prolong the crisis.The news for those in flooded areas Friday ranged from good, to bad, to little change at all.Some of the 150 people of Condamine drove home in a convoy on Thursday for the first time since military helicopters helped evacuate everyone on Dec. 30 before a swollen river swamped the cattle-ranch supply town.Nothing does justice to the devastation you come back to; it's just phenomenal, said pub owner Shane Hickey.Everything is gone. The water just took everything with it.All the grass is mud, all the plants have been torn out of the ground, the trees have gone over and are just covered in silt and mud,he said.
The town has no drinking water, and Mayor Ray Brown said electricians, plumbers, portable toilets and water and food were being brought in.Farther south, people in St. George were watching floodwaters inch higher by the hour on the earth-and-sandbag levees they rushed to build around homes. The flood peak was forecast lower, meaning fewer than 30 homes in the town of some 2,500 people were at risk.In Rockhampton, the largest community hit, the floodwaters peaked two days ago but were steady Friday after inundating large parts of the city of 75,000 people. Small motorboats have replaced cars as the main way to get around in the worst-hit suburbs.
Police declared a no-go zone for boats on a section of the flooded Fitzroy River because live power lines hung too close to the water.Traveling through the floodwaters at this location is extremely dangerous due to low-lying power lines, said Inspector Peter Flanders. It is important that the power to the Rockhampton sewerage treatment plant remains switched on.

SHIVTA ARTILLERY TRAINING SCHOOL, Israel – Intense winds scraped sand from the desert floor, clouding the view and leaving the Israeli soldiers scarcely able to see each other as they practiced blasting artillery shells at distant targets.In a nearby armored vehicle, commanders armed with small screens could easily monitor every cannon, jeep and target involved, ordering strikes with the tap of a finger. Their weapon: a sophisticated communication system that compiles battlefield information in an easy-to-use, video game-like map interface, helping militaries make sense of the chaos of battle.The Associated Press was given rare access to the exercise by a military eager to reclaim some of the deterrence it held in the region when technologically inferior Arab armies were the main threat against it.That deterrence has eroded in recent times, as guerrilla warfare became more prominent and left conventional armies — here as elsewhere — looking clumsy and vulnerable.
In a monthlong war in 2006, Lebanese guerrillas with relatively simple rockets knocked out Israeli tanks, and Israel's high-tech military was powerless to stop a barrage of primitive, unguided Katyusha rockets on northern Israel.The latest computerized gadgetry is designed to knock down the military's response time. Troops on the ground can add new targets as soon as they spot them — like militants on foot, a rocket squad or a vehicle — to the network for commanders to see instantly and hit.Strikes that used to take 20 or more minutes to coordinate now take just seconds, said Maj. Hagai Ben-Shushan, head of the C4I section for Israel's artillery. It doesn't take much, then shells are going to the target, he said.Israel is among several nations harnessing digital and satellite technology to develop C4I systems — short for command, control, communications, computers and intelligence — that integrate battlefield information.The goal is to have all the elements of a force ... seeing the same tactical picture, and you can move information from one to the other completely seamlessly, said Britain-based Giles Ebbutt, who studies such systems for Jane's Information Group.C4I systems are operational in the United States, which started development in the 1990s, as well as France, Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy, among other countries, Ebbutt said.Israel's version — being developed over the past decade or so — is a little bit further down the road than some people ... because they have a focus on the problem, they are constantly operationally alert, and they need to be as operationally developed as they can, Ebbutt said.
The army says it started using the first, basic version in 2005, but it did not include all units and functions. The latest, completed in 2009 and in training since last March, allows all forces on the ground to communicate instantaneously.Visually, now everything is on the map, so it's much easier to coordinate, said the battalion commander whose men were being trained. You can easily understand the map and the position of forces.He spoke on condition of anonymity under military rules.On a stretch of sand near the army base at Shivta, deep in Israel's southern Negev desert, six artillery cannon stood with their barrels aimed at targets about 4 miles (6 kilometers) away. Commanders in a nearby armored vehicle stared at two screens, watching all movement on an interactive satellite map.Pink squares marked each cannon, dotted lines of shell trajectory extended from their barrels and circles showed the expected blast radius of any shells fired.Different symbols marked other army vehicles, their locations kept up to date with GPS-like devices. All the vehicles carried similar screens, giving soldiers a realtime map of the battlefield.
One soldier demonstrates how to add a new target to the map: A tap on the screen places it, then he can describe its size and character.Seeing the target, a commander can then order a strike with a few more taps, deciding who will fire and how much. The order immediately appears on those units' screens. The system's newest version, built by Israeli defense contractor Elbit, has yet to be battle-tested, but Israel used an earlier one in its Gaza offensive two years ago, Ben-Shushan said.
That war, launched to stop militant rocket fire on Israeli towns, killed about 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Four of the 10 Israeli soldiers were killed by friendly fire, but Col. Gil Maoz, head of Israel's Digital Army program, said the technology helped to prevent other Israeli fatalities.Israel had only an early version of the system during its war with the Lebanese militia Hezbollah in 2006, which killed about 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis. Sharia law should be banished from any court in America, unless we plan to support beatings and murders. Just one of the many things Sharia law states is that an Islamic person who leaves Islam is now considered apostate and should be killed. Gays should be executed and thieves should have their hand cut off while wives can be beaten for many different reasons by their husbands. Isn’t that splendid.Sharia law is the exact opposite of our US constitution, Judeo Christian values and heritage of respect and freedom. It reads more like an Adolph Hitler rule book, yet that is what Islam’s skeletal, legal and cultural core run by. There is no freedom that I can see anywhere in Islamic countries. It is only an ancient, male controlled Governmental and political system, hiding behind words and structure of a Religion Islam. There is nothing liberating, life enhancing or freedom producing about it. We continue to hear Imams and Muslim apologists talking of the wonders of Islam’s ability to live and breath in safety and pluralism in America. They aren’t hostile to Jews and Christians, yeah other non believers. Yet, when one of our States, Oklahoma votes against Sharia or International law being used within their courts, they are sued and challenged by Muslims and Muslim groups. Shockingly, Judge Vicki-LaGrange said the overwhelming elections against using Sharia would be suspended, pending a hearing, where she would hear arguments against the vote, then make a decision. What is not to understand? The vast majority of Oklahomans voted against using Sharia. How is that not clear?
Let us talk of more pluralistic and open minded Muslim moments. We saw the near successful car bomb in Times square a few months back; Christmas 2009 we saw the underwear, Islamic bomber nearly blow up a plane on Christmas; Before that we saw the Fort Hood Islamic killer wipe out 14 people at Ft. Hood. The threats and attacks have been non stop since 2001. In the meantime, we see law suits against Oklahomans and a Judge blocking a law the vast majority of the people put in place against the nightmare of Sharia. Frankly, the whole country and every court system in it should banish Sharia law period. On top of all this idiotic drama we hear the endless push and movement to build the 13 story Islamic center at ground zero. Naturally we hear the pluralistic and multi religious emphasis that will represent the presented core of this internationalist and pluralistic effort. There is only one teensy weensy problem. That is a lie from the pit of hell. The only Religion that will be pushed on New York and the world is Islam. There will be no Synagogue and Lutheran Church hidden within its many floors. If allowed, this will be nothing more then an attractant for all radicalized Muslims worldwide, a training center for terrorism in America and a major flip off of the middle finger to all of Americans, Christians and Jews.It will be a celebration of the attack on 9/11 again and again like the movie Groundhog Day. G20 to tackle food prices as countries reassure

Last year, wheat futures prices rose 47 percent, buoyed by bad weather including drought in Russia and its Black Sea neighbors. U.S. corn rose more than 50 percent and U.S. soybeans jumped 34 percent.The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said in a report Wednesday that sugar and meat prices were at their highest since its records began in 1990. For wheat, rice, corn and other cereals, prices were at their highest since the 2008 crisis.During that crisis, riots broke out in countries from Egypt to Haiti. Import prices jumped, forcing many countries' trade balances into a deep and costly deficit, and several governments in Asia imposed export restrictions on rice.The U.N.'s World Food Program (WFP), which was feeding some 100 million people last year, noted that cereals including rice had not hit 2008 price peaks, but that sugar and cooking oil were pushing up the food index.We're ready to step up assistance specifically to countries that are vulnerable to these high prices, especially focusing also on risks to children, WFP spokeswoman Emilia Casella told a news briefing in Geneva.She said a fairly good harvest in a number of African countries in the past year had helped, and that reserves were higher than in the 2008 crisis while fuel prices, which affect fertilizer and the transport of food, were lower.Robert Prior-Wandesforde, an economist at Credit Suisse in Singapore, said food commodity prices were unlikely to rise much further, barring weather catastrophes.The estimated global and exporting countries' stock-to-use ratios of both wheat and rice are considerably higher today than in 2007-08, making shortages and drastic export bans unlikely,he said in a report. Winter storm bringing more snow to blizzard-weary North

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Snow fell across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states on Friday, bringing several inches of fresh accumulation to a region that has scarcely dug out from the Christmas weekend blizzard.The latest winter storm will drop snow from the Great Lakes east to the Atlantic seaboard and New England throughout Friday and into early Saturday, forecasters said.The Northeast could see one to five inches of snow from Maryland north into Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, forecasters said. Two to four inches accumulation was likely in New York City, they said.One to three inches were forecast for Philadelphia, Wilmington and Atlantic City, according to Accuweather.com.Accuweather.com senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said Northeast weather would feature a great deal of little storm systems or disturbances running around through the weekend.Pretty much anybody in the Northeast is fair game for a sneak attack from a coating of snow into Sunday, he said. It is almost like atmospheric guerrilla warfare.While not as powerful as the late December blast, this storm was snarling travel, with delays of nearly three hours inbound for LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports and slightly less at Newark Liberty International.

That storm dropped some 20 inches of snow in New York City, where many streets went unplowed for days and trains, buses and subways ground to a halt.A federal and several local investigations have been launched to determine why the cleanup was slow and inefficient, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg has vowed the city will be better prepared and more efficient this time around.On Tuesday or Wednesday, a big coastal storm was likely to arrive off the East Coast, the National Weather Service said.The South will get its latest wintry blast over the weekend, said Mark Avery, lead meteorologist for The Weather Channel, with some significant snow accumulations.The wintry side of this storm will really begin to show up on Sunday, Avery said. Snow is expected from Arkansas into the western Carolinas, with accumulating snow possible in northern parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.A winter storm was expected as well over the central Plains, with snow in Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas and Nebraska, moving east toward Missouri, forecasters said.In the West, dense fog and smog plagued the Wasatch Front in heavily populated areas of Utah on Friday.It's been a problem most of the week, the smog, patchy dense fog in the lower valleys, said meteorologist Mike Conger with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

Flooded-out Australians go home to mud, mess, rain

BRISBANE, Australia – Residents of waterlogged northeast Australia returned to homes caked in sludge and nervously watched the skies for more rain Friday while waiting for swollen rivers to recede.The worst appeared to have passed from flooding that covered an area the size of France and Germany in murky brown water for longer than a week, but torrents still posed dangers in partly-submerged towns in Queensland state and progress on assessing damage and rebuilding was slow.On Friday, police banned boats from the swollen river coursing through the city of Rockhampton that is expected to remain near its peak for another 10 days.The scope of the damage is not yet known, and fully repairing all of the infrastructure washed away or ruined could take years, the army general heading recovery efforts said.We still don't know what it looks like underwater, Maj. Gen. Mick Slater told reporters in Rockhampton, where people for days have waded through water that was waist-deep in places. Major roads, rail lines and bridges are all damaged, but we don't know yet how much.
Australia's worst flooding in some 50 years was caused by tropical rains that fell for days, starting just before Christmas. Some 1,200 homes in 40 communities were inundated and almost 11,000 more have water damage. Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated, and police have reported 10 deaths in swollen rivers or floodwaters in Queensland since late November.The flooding shut some 40 coal mines in the state, pushing up global prices, and has hurt wheat, mango, sugarcane and other crops. State Premier Anna Bligh has said the price of rebuilding homes, businesses and infrastructure, coupled with economic losses, could be as high as $5 billion.Heavy rain fell Friday and could last through the weekend, the Bureau of Meteorology said. The rains aren't expected to increase flooding but could delay recovery and prolong the crisis.The news for those in flooded areas Friday ranged from good, to bad, to little change at all.Some of the 150 people of Condamine drove home in a convoy on Thursday for the first time since military helicopters helped evacuate everyone on Dec. 30 before a swollen river swamped the cattle-ranch supply town.Nothing does justice to the devastation you come back to; it's just phenomenal, said pub owner Shane Hickey.Everything is gone. The water just took everything with it.All the grass is mud, all the plants have been torn out of the ground, the trees have gone over and are just covered in silt and mud,he said.
The town has no drinking water, and Mayor Ray Brown said electricians, plumbers, portable toilets and water and food were being brought in.Farther south, people in St. George were watching floodwaters inch higher by the hour on the earth-and-sandbag levees they rushed to build around homes. The flood peak was forecast lower, meaning fewer than 30 homes in the town of some 2,500 people were at risk.In Rockhampton, the largest community hit, the floodwaters peaked two days ago but were steady Friday after inundating large parts of the city of 75,000 people. Small motorboats have replaced cars as the main way to get around in the worst-hit suburbs.
Police declared a no-go zone for boats on a section of the flooded Fitzroy River because live power lines hung too close to the water.Traveling through the floodwaters at this location is extremely dangerous due to low-lying power lines, said Inspector Peter Flanders. It is important that the power to the Rockhampton sewerage treatment plant remains switched on.

Their weapon: a sophisticated communication system that compiles battlefield information in an easy-to-use, video game-like map interface, helping militaries make sense of the chaos of battle.The Associated Press was given rare access to the exercise by a military eager to reclaim some of the deterrence it held in the region when technologically inferior Arab armies were the main threat against it.That deterrence has eroded in recent times, as guerrilla warfare became more prominent and left conventional armies — here as elsewhere — looking clumsy and vulnerable.

The army says it started using the first, basic version in 2005, but it did not include all units and functions. The latest, completed in 2009 and in training since last March, allows all forces on the ground to communicate instantaneously.Visually, now everything is on the map, so it's much easier to coordinate, said the battalion commander whose men were being trained. One soldier demonstrates how to add a new target to the map: A tap on the screen places it, then he can describe its size and character.Seeing the target, a commander can then order a strike with a few more taps, deciding who will fire and how much. The system's newest version, built by Israeli defense contractor Elbit, has yet to be battle-tested, but Israel used an earlier one in its Gaza offensive two years ago, Ben-Shushan said.
That war, launched to stop militant rocket fire on Israeli towns, killed about 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Four of the 10 Israeli soldiers were killed by friendly fire, but Col. They have also in warp speed been slaughtering our way of life and Judeo/Christian values.It doesn’t take rocket science to revisit a few decisions by Obama and this administration from the first days in office to see the calculated plan of destruction against America. The first few months in we saw, the reversal of Bush’s Mexico City Policy, which at a time of a rapidly deepening recession, caused us to fund and promote abortions worldwide, not just here. We could hardly take another breath when Obama gave 900 million to the serial killer group, Hamas, who chronically lob missiles at our faithful alley Israel and kill Jews where ever they can.

He even hosted conferences to that effect, in between coming to America to speak at our Universities and posing at the UN. Ahmadinejad has said many times that he is waiting for the Islamic Madi to come out of the well and rule the world. Apparently, he needs big fiery wars for that to happen. I have said on air many times, if Ahmadinejad is so concerned about the Madi coming out of the well…..why doesn’t he jump in the well and wait for him?

Fish & Bird kills: are we getting answers or being placated?

7 January 2011: Readers looking for reassuring evidence that the recent massive die offs of fish and birds will find comfort in knowing that such events are historically not all that uncommon. Weather, pollution, parasites and disease are reported as the major culprits behind such events, even as reported yesterday by Glenn Beck. That appears to be the safe, middle-of-the-road explanation. It might even be the correct explanation. But what if it’s not? Also, why are we treated with absurd explanations by our government when the truth, if it is indeed the truth, would be more convincing? The official government explanation for public consumption, as reported by the corporate media, is that the massive bird kill in Arkansas was the result of loud noises created by New Year’s celebratory fireworks. Spooked and disoriented by the loud noises created by the fireworks, some 5,000 red wing blackbirds were roused from their resting positions and flew into one another and other stationary objects, causing massive blunt force trauma to their internal organs, killing them and causing them to rain from the sky like something out of a Stephen King Novel.
In the event you remain unconvinced, veteran bird curator at the Smithsonian Greg Graves has gone on record, saying that the significance of the event has been exaggerated and the massive die off is not such a big deal. Sure enough, as about 163 such events are reported on an annual basis, although most seem to fly under the radar due to location and other factors (pun intended).About the blackbirds, Graves stated that [t]The blackbirds are considered a nuisance, especially in the south where large winter roosts occur. In large numbers, they can be noisy, messy and destructive, much like those of us who are in the general unanointed population. (Okay, I added that last portion of the sentence for effect).As to the estimated 100,000 fish found dead within days of the bird deaths just 125 miles away in the Arkansas River, and another 500 blackbirds found dead in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, those incidents could be completely unrelated, noted Mr. Graves. That sentiment was echoed by government officials as well.Before dismissing the concerns of us regular folks by citing statistics and general causes, however, shouldn’t we be getting answers that are specific to the latest series of incidents? Or at least have someone asking direct and specific questions instead of relying on anecdotal evidence? After all, we are supposedly at war, and our enemy has made it clear their intent to use biological and chemical weapons. If that is indeed a legitimate threat, doesn’t it make sense to know the truth before shrugging the events off to natural happenstance?
Possible national security implications
After receiving several e-mails about this matter, including one from a soldier with extensive biological and chemical experience currently serving in Iraq, I thought it was time to begin conducting my own investigation. After all, Janet Napolitano is currently busy assisting American troops with reinforcement of the border (between Pakistan and Afghanistan, that is). Perhaps that is the reason that I could find no one in the media posing any direct questions to the Department of Homeland Security about biological or chemical concerns. As I already noted, others are simply relying on anecdotal evidence to support their conclusions that there is nothing to see here.The first thing I learned, which at first blush supports the historical evidence, is that strange animal deaths en masse have been reported over the years for reasons that one would not ordinarily expect. There have been reports of flying fish and raining frogs, for example, that were legitimately traced to nearby tornado activity. Not everything is a conspiracy. Odd, yes, but neither nefarious nor completely inexplicable.The second thing I learned is much more disconcerting. Uncomfortable with merely relying on statistics, I thought I would pose specific questions about the recent wildlife deaths to the very agency within our government that was created to protect us from threats within our homeland. What I found was troublesome and makes me believe they are not doing their job, at least not in this instance.Shortly after 9:00 this morning, I called the Department of Homeland Security office in Washington, and the DHS Threat Fusion Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which covers Arkansas. I introduced myself and my purpose for calling, which was to verify that the Department of Homeland Security has an open investigation into the two incidents involving the bird and fish deaths in Arkansas, given what we know about the current bio-chemical threats to the U.S.
At both locations, I was greeted by pleasant individuals who promptly sent me into telephone transfer hell, and finally to a male DHS agent at the latter location who declined to give his name to the media. It was that office and that person I needed to speak with, I was assured by DHS-HQ.When asked if the Department of Homeland Security is investigating or assisting in the investigation of the two incidents, he stated that the DHS is aware of the incidents but not involved in any capacity. None.
The following is a verbatim transcript of my conversation with the DHS official after being told of the purpose of my contact and providing a proper introduction, and after the official denying any DHS involvement in the matter.Investigative oversight? I asked. No, came the reply.Well, isn’t it possible that the deaths could be, however remote, the result of the release of a chemical or biological agent? I asked.It’s highly unlikely, very doubtful, he replied.How do you know? Have you been in contact with anyone engaged in the necropsies of the birds or fish? I asked.
Uh, no,he replied.Well. if you’re not involved in the investigation in any capacity, how do you know? I pressed.We would know, came his reply.Okay, my last question, sir. Would you know if the deaths could be from any action of the U.S. military, such as the Dugway sheep incident back in the late ’60′s? Or would you be informed of-At that point, he interrupted me, saying: This has nothing to do with the military and is not a matter under DHS review.Our conversation concluded at that point. Clearly, he was becoming agitated by my continuing questions. Before hanging up, I again asked him for his name for the purpose of this article, but he declined citing the same reason.
Research of significant incidents
After combing through numerous news articles and contacting several wildlife agencies, I confirmed that over the last few years, there have been several significant incidents involving the strange or large number of deaths of wildlife in the U.S. and elsewhere. Some can be attributed to the nature of things. Others, well, perhaps not.On 26 July 2002, for example, Paul Sperry reported that during the 18 months previous to that article, health officials in Washington, DC found 407 dead birds infected with the West Nile virus, including two that were picked up at the White House. The method of infection of West Nile into the bird population of the U.S., and specifically into the DC birds themselves, has never been satisfactorily explained.On 21 December 2007, several dozen birds described as a flock of Purple Martins fell from the sky over New York City. Many were found scattered across Staten Island, either falling from the sky or landing, then fall over and begin to twitch and flap as they died. This incident is particularly significant by the very graphic nature of actual amateur video taken of one of the birds after it fell to the ground. Aside from the fact that the birds should have been long gone from that area, the video is clearly indicative of something other than anecdotal evidence that nothing is amiss.
I was surprised by the number of recent wildlife deaths and compiled a list of significant incidents at the end of this article. I also found it interesting the similarities between previous unexplained incidents and those being reported now. For example, on 8 January 2007, Esperance, a town near Perth in Western Australia, was declared a natural disaster area after several hundred birds dropped dead out of the sky and onto people’s lawns over a wide area. At about the same time and halfway around the world, the streets in Austin, Texas were closed as officials cleaned up hundreds of dead birds that also inexplicably fell dead from the sky. To date, neither incident has been sufficiently explained. According to the Australian report, some birds were observed convulsing on the ground before they died.Nothing out of the ordinary? Perhaps another look at the video from Staten Island might be in order.The reports today appear similar in nature. It’s easy to dismiss the incidents as freaks of nature, or insisting, without evidence, that there is nothing to see here as many are.Although the entirety of massive kills listed below could have innocuous explanations, I believe that we deserve to know the truth. We deserve better from our investigative agencies, making sure that they are on top of things, while making sure that they are not merely the domestic authoritative arms for global restructuring.Based on my research, I doubt that we will be told the whole truth behind each of these deaths, unless, of course, someday, someone, releases a report like the 1994 GAO accounting of the Dugway sheep kill incident. By then, though, will it matter? I sense that if we continue to accept the inane explanations, fail to ask questions, or continue on our path of blissful ignorance, it is us who might become the next statistic.

Thousands of dead turtle doves rained down on roofs and cars in an Italian town in the latest in a growing spate of mass animal deaths across the globe.Residents in Faenza described the birds falling to the ground like 'little Christmas balls' with strange blue stains on their beaks.Initial tests on up to 8,000 of the doves indicated that the blue stain could have been caused by poisoning or hypoxia.A witness emailed MINA: We have no idea why this happened all of a sudden.The doves just started falling one-by-one then in groups of 10s and 20s.Hypoxia, a lack of oxygen, is known to cause confusion and illness in animals. It is also a common precursor to altitude sickness.Experts said results from tests on the doves will not be available for at least a week.They said that cold weather could have caused the birds' deaths as the flock was swept into a high-altitude wind storm before falling to the earth.It comes after two million dead fish were found to have washed up on shores in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.Scientists believe a rapid movement of Magnetic North Pole towards Russia may have caused bird deaths.

(CBC) A farmer in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures has found about 80 dead pigeons on his farm 20 kilometres west of Quebec City.Sylvain Turmel first noticed the dead birds in his field on Dec. 18.I found two dead birds in the morning, which is normal, birds sometimes die, he said.But when I came back one hour later, another 25 had fallen, said Turmel.In the time it took me to pick them up, five more fell to the ground! Turmel called police and the fire department. They couldn't provide him with any answers, but he said while they were there, more birds fell to their deaths.He said wildlife officials with Quebec's Ministry of Natural Resources collected the birds for analysis but they are also stumped.Farmer Sylvain Turmel in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., picks up a dead pigeon Friday. All they can tell me is that it's not avian influenza, it's not the West Nile virus, and it's not poison, which is what officials suspected at first.It won't stop. Large Maryland Fish Kill Extends Trend Of Mass Animal Deaths 1/6/2011 10:58 AM ET
(RTTNews) - Extending a recent trend of mass animal deaths, approximately two million fish have died in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland officials revealed on Wednesday. The Maryland Department of the Environment said it is investigating the fish kill but noted that water quality in the area appears to be acceptable and said the fish appear to have died from natural causes.Cold water stress exacerbated by a large population of the affected species (juvenile spot fish) appears to be the cause of the kill, the MDE said. The MDE said that spot fish may have difficulty surviving in colder temperatures, adding that a rapid drop in water temperatures apparently caused cold water stress.The massive fish kill in Maryland comes after an estimated 100,000 fish were killed in the Arkansas River near Ozark, apparently from disease. On Wednesday, GeaPress reported hundreds -- possibly thousands -- of dead and dying birds in Italy. Countless turtle doves were found scattered in the streets, in flower beds and hanging tragically from trees like Christmas balls in the town of Faenza. Many of the birds that fell dead from the sky were discovered with a mysterious blue stain in their beaks. In the past week, similar incidents of mass animal deaths have been reported across the world. Thousands of dead birds fell from the sky in Arkansas on New Year's Eve, and similar incidents were reported on different days in Louisiana, Kentucky and Sweden. Two million fish were discovered dead in Maryland, with other fish kills also reported in Brazil, New Zealand and Arkansas -- approximately 100 miles from the bird incident. 40,000 crabs washed up on England beaches in the past few days, as well.While the events are likely unrelated, most still remain a mystery. Officials suggest fireworks are likely responsible for many of the bird deaths and that unusually cold weather could be to blame for the strange mass deaths of fish and crabs.GeaPress suggests that the blue stains found in mouths of the dead and dying birds in Italy could be the result of poisoning or possibly signs of hypoxia. Both the local forest service and the WWF in Faenza have sent some of the dead birds for testing, though the results likely won't be available for at least a week.

Fish & Bird kills: are we getting answers or being placated?

7 January 2011: Readers looking for reassuring evidence that the recent massive die offs of fish and birds will find comfort in knowing that such events are historically not all that uncommon. Weather, pollution, parasites and disease are reported as the major culprits behind such events, even as reported yesterday by Glenn Beck. That appears to be the safe, middle-of-the-road explanation. It might even be the correct explanation. But what if it’s not? Also, why are we treated with absurd explanations by our government when the truth, if it is indeed the truth, would be more convincing? The official government explanation for public consumption, as reported by the corporate media, is that the massive bird kill in Arkansas was the result of loud noises created by New Year’s celebratory fireworks. Spooked and disoriented by the loud noises created by the fireworks, some 5,000 red wing blackbirds were roused from their resting positions and flew into one another and other stationary objects, causing massive blunt force trauma to their internal organs, killing them and causing them to rain from the sky like something out of a Stephen King Novel.
In the event you remain unconvinced, veteran bird curator at the Smithsonian Greg Graves has gone on record, saying that the significance of the event has been exaggerated and the massive die off is not such a big deal. Sure enough, as about 163 such events are reported on an annual basis, although most seem to fly under the radar due to location and other factors (pun intended).About the blackbirds, Graves stated that [t]The blackbirds are considered a nuisance, especially in the south where large winter roosts occur. In large numbers, they can be noisy, messy and destructive, much like those of us who are in the general unanointed population. (Okay, I added that last portion of the sentence for effect).As to the estimated 100,000 fish found dead within days of the bird deaths just 125 miles away in the Arkansas River, and another 500 blackbirds found dead in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, those incidents could be completely unrelated, noted Mr. Graves. That sentiment was echoed by government officials as well.Before dismissing the concerns of us regular folks by citing statistics and general causes, however, shouldn’t we be getting answers that are specific to the latest series of incidents? Or at least have someone asking direct and specific questions instead of relying on anecdotal evidence? After all, we are supposedly at war, and our enemy has made it clear their intent to use biological and chemical weapons. If that is indeed a legitimate threat, doesn’t it make sense to know the truth before shrugging the events off to natural happenstance?
Possible national security implications
After receiving several e-mails about this matter, including one from a soldier with extensive biological and chemical experience currently serving in Iraq, I thought it was time to begin conducting my own investigation. After all, Janet Napolitano is currently busy assisting American troops with reinforcement of the border (between Pakistan and Afghanistan, that is). Perhaps that is the reason that I could find no one in the media posing any direct questions to the Department of Homeland Security about biological or chemical concerns. As I already noted, others are simply relying on anecdotal evidence to support their conclusions that there is nothing to see here.The first thing I learned, which at first blush supports the historical evidence, is that strange animal deaths en masse have been reported over the years for reasons that one would not ordinarily expect. There have been reports of flying fish and raining frogs, for example, that were legitimately traced to nearby tornado activity. Not everything is a conspiracy. Odd, yes, but neither nefarious nor completely inexplicable.The second thing I learned is much more disconcerting. Uncomfortable with merely relying on statistics, I thought I would pose specific questions about the recent wildlife deaths to the very agency within our government that was created to protect us from threats within our homeland. What I found was troublesome and makes me believe they are not doing their job, at least not in this instance.Shortly after 9:00 this morning, I called the Department of Homeland Security office in Washington, and the DHS Threat Fusion Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which covers Arkansas. I introduced myself and my purpose for calling, which was to verify that the Department of Homeland Security has an open investigation into the two incidents involving the bird and fish deaths in Arkansas, given what we know about the current bio-chemical threats to the U.S.
At both locations, I was greeted by pleasant individuals who promptly sent me into telephone transfer hell, and finally to a male DHS agent at the latter location who declined to give his name to the media. It was that office and that person I needed to speak with, I was assured by DHS-HQ.When asked if the Department of Homeland Security is investigating or assisting in the investigation of the two incidents, he stated that the DHS is aware of the incidents but not involved in any capacity. None.
The following is a verbatim transcript of my conversation with the DHS official after being told of the purpose of my contact and providing a proper introduction, and after the official denying any DHS involvement in the matter.Investigative oversight? I asked. No, came the reply.Well, isn’t it possible that the deaths could be, however remote, the result of the release of a chemical or biological agent? I asked.It’s highly unlikely, very doubtful, he replied.How do you know? Have you been in contact with anyone engaged in the necropsies of the birds or fish? I asked.
Uh, no,he replied.Well. if you’re not involved in the investigation in any capacity, how do you know? I pressed.We would know, came his reply.Okay, my last question, sir. Would you know if the deaths could be from any action of the U.S. military, such as the Dugway sheep incident back in the late ’60′s? Or would you be informed of-At that point, he interrupted me, saying: This has nothing to do with the military and is not a matter under DHS review.Our conversation concluded at that point. Clearly, he was becoming agitated by my continuing questions. Before hanging up, I again asked him for his name for the purpose of this article, but he declined citing the same reason.
Research of significant incidents
After combing through numerous news articles and contacting several wildlife agencies, I confirmed that over the last few years, there have been several significant incidents involving the strange or large number of deaths of wildlife in the U.S. and elsewhere. Some can be attributed to the nature of things. Others, well, perhaps not.On 26 July 2002, for example, Paul Sperry reported that during the 18 months previous to that article, health officials in Washington, DC found 407 dead birds infected with the West Nile virus, including two that were picked up at the White House. The method of infection of West Nile into the bird population of the U.S., and specifically into the DC birds themselves, has never been satisfactorily explained.On 21 December 2007, several dozen birds described as a flock of Purple Martins fell from the sky over New York City. Many were found scattered across Staten Island, either falling from the sky or landing, then fall over and begin to twitch and flap as they died. This incident is particularly significant by the very graphic nature of actual amateur video taken of one of the birds after it fell to the ground. Aside from the fact that the birds should have been long gone from that area, the video is clearly indicative of something other than anecdotal evidence that nothing is amiss.
I was surprised by the number of recent wildlife deaths and compiled a list of significant incidents at the end of this article. I also found it interesting the similarities between previous unexplained incidents and those being reported now. For example, on 8 January 2007, Esperance, a town near Perth in Western Australia, was declared a natural disaster area after several hundred birds dropped dead out of the sky and onto people’s lawns over a wide area. At about the same time and halfway around the world, the streets in Austin, Texas were closed as officials cleaned up hundreds of dead birds that also inexplicably fell dead from the sky. To date, neither incident has been sufficiently explained. According to the Australian report, some birds were observed convulsing on the ground before they died.Nothing out of the ordinary? Perhaps another look at the video from Staten Island might be in order.The reports today appear similar in nature. It’s easy to dismiss the incidents as freaks of nature, or insisting, without evidence, that there is nothing to see here as many are.Although the entirety of massive kills listed below could have innocuous explanations, I believe that we deserve to know the truth. We deserve better from our investigative agencies, making sure that they are on top of things, while making sure that they are not merely the domestic authoritative arms for global restructuring.Based on my research, I doubt that we will be told the whole truth behind each of these deaths, unless, of course, someday, someone, releases a report like the 1994 GAO accounting of the Dugway sheep kill incident. By then, though, will it matter? I sense that if we continue to accept the inane explanations, fail to ask questions, or continue on our path of blissful ignorance, it is us who might become the next statistic.

Thousands of dead turtle doves rained down on roofs and cars in an Italian town in the latest in a growing spate of mass animal deaths across the globe.Residents in Faenza described the birds falling to the ground like 'little Christmas balls' with strange blue stains on their beaks.Initial tests on up to 8,000 of the doves indicated that the blue stain could have been caused by poisoning or hypoxia.A witness emailed MINA: We have no idea why this happened all of a sudden.The doves just started falling one-by-one then in groups of 10s and 20s.Hypoxia, a lack of oxygen, is known to cause confusion and illness in animals. It is also a common precursor to altitude sickness.Experts said results from tests on the doves will not be available for at least a week.They said that cold weather could have caused the birds' deaths as the flock was swept into a high-altitude wind storm before falling to the earth.It comes after two million dead fish were found to have washed up on shores in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.Scientists believe a rapid movement of Magnetic North Pole towards Russia may have caused bird deaths.

(CBC) A farmer in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures has found about 80 dead pigeons on his farm 20 kilometres west of Quebec City.Sylvain Turmel first noticed the dead birds in his field on Dec. 18.I found two dead birds in the morning, which is normal, birds sometimes die, he said.But when I came back one hour later, another 25 had fallen, said Turmel.In the time it took me to pick them up, five more fell to the ground! Turmel called police and the fire department. They couldn't provide him with any answers, but he said while they were there, more birds fell to their deaths.He said wildlife officials with Quebec's Ministry of Natural Resources collected the birds for analysis but they are also stumped.Farmer Sylvain Turmel in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., picks up a dead pigeon Friday. All they can tell me is that it's not avian influenza, it's not the West Nile virus, and it's not poison, which is what officials suspected at first.It won't stop. (RTTNews) - Extending a recent trend of mass animal deaths, approximately two million fish have died in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland officials revealed on Wednesday. The Maryland Department of the Environment said it is investigating the fish kill but noted that water quality in the area appears to be acceptable and said the fish appear to have died from natural causes.Cold water stress exacerbated by a large population of the affected species (juvenile spot fish) appears to be the cause of the kill, the MDE said. The MDE said that spot fish may have difficulty surviving in colder temperatures, adding that a rapid drop in water temperatures apparently caused cold water stress.The massive fish kill in Maryland comes after an estimated 100,000 fish were killed in the Arkansas River near Ozark, apparently from disease. On Wednesday, GeaPress reported hundreds -- possibly thousands -- of dead and dying birds in Italy. Countless turtle doves were found scattered in the streets, in flower beds and hanging tragically from trees like Christmas balls in the town of Faenza. Many of the birds that fell dead from the sky were discovered with a mysterious blue stain in their beaks. In the past week, similar incidents of mass animal deaths have been reported across the world. Thousands of dead birds fell from the sky in Arkansas on New Year's Eve, and similar incidents were reported on different days in Louisiana, Kentucky and Sweden. Two million fish were discovered dead in Maryland, with other fish kills also reported in Brazil, New Zealand and Arkansas -- approximately 100 miles from the bird incident. 40,000 crabs washed up on England beaches in the past few days, as well.While the events are likely unrelated, most still remain a mystery. Officials suggest fireworks are likely responsible for many of the bird deaths and that unusually cold weather could be to blame for the strange mass deaths of fish and crabs.GeaPress suggests that the blue stains found in mouths of the dead and dying birds in Italy could be the result of poisoning or possibly signs of hypoxia. Both the local forest service and the WWF in Faenza have sent some of the dead birds for testing, though the results likely won't be available for at least a week.

A homosexual prostitution ring is under investigation by federal and District authorities and includes among its clients key officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, military officers, congressional aides and US and foreign businessmen with close social ties to Washington's political elite, documents obtained by The Washington Times reveal.
One of the ring's high-profile clients was so well-connected, in fact, that he could arrange a middle-of-the-night tour of the White House for his friends on Sunday, July 3, of last year. Among the six persons on the extraordinary 1 a.m. tour were two male prostitutes.Federal authorities, including the Secret Service, are investigating criminal aspects of the ring and have told male prostitutes and their homosexual clients that a grand jury will deliberate over the evidence throughout the summer, The Times learned.Reporters for this newspaper examined hundreds of credit-card vouchers, drawn on both corporate and personal cards and made payable to the escort service operated by the homosexual ring. Many of the vouchers were run through a so-called sub-merchant account of the Chambers Funeral Home by a son of the owner, without the company's knowledge.Among the client names contained in the vouchers - and identified by prostitutes and escort operators - are government officials, locally based US military officers, businessmen, lawyers, bankers, congressional aides and other professionals.Editors of The Times said the newspaper would print only the names of those found to be in sensitive government posts or positions of influence. There is no intention of publishing names or facts about the operation merely for titillation, said Wesley Pruden, managing editor of The Times.
The office of US Attorney General Jay B. Stephens, former deputy White House counsel to President Reagan, is coordinating federal aspects of the inquiry but refused to discuss the investigation or grand jury actions.Several former White House colleagues of Mr. Stephen are listed among clients of the homosexual prostitution ring, according to the credit card records, and those persons have confirmed that the charges were theirs.Mr. Stephen's office, after first saying it would cooperate with The Times' inquiry, withdrew the offer late yesterday and also declined to say whether Mr. Stephens would recuse himself from the case because of possible conflict of interest.At least one highly placed Bush administration official and a wealthy businessman who procured homosexual prostitutes from the escort services operated by the ring are cooperating with the investigation, several sources said.Among clients who charged homosexual prostitutes services on major credit cards over the past 18 months are Charles K. Dutcher, former associate director of presidential personnel in the Reagan administration, and Paul R. Balach, Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole’s political personnel liaison to the White House.In the 1970s, Mr. Dutcher was a congressional aide to former Rep. Robert Bauman, Maryland Republican, who resigned from the House after admitted having engaged in sexual liaisons with teen-age male prostitutes. Mr. Dutcher also worked on the staff of Vice President Dan Quayle when he represented an Indiana district in the House.
A charge also was discovered against the credit card of a former White House staffer who prepared the president’s daily news summary in the Reagan administration. Todd A Blodgett said he had not made the charge.One of the ring’s big spending clients is Craig J. Spence, Washington socialite and international trade consultant, according to documents and interviews with operators and prostitutes who say they engaged in sexual activities with Mr. Spence.Mr. Spence spent upwards of $20,000 a month for male prostitutes who provided sex to him and his friends, said to include military personnel who also acted as his bodyguards. It was Mr. Spence who arranged the nocturnal tour of the Reagan White House. Repeated attempts to reach Mr. Spence by telephone, fax machine and personal visits to his home, were unsuccessful.Credit card vouchers confirm that Mr. Spence charged thousands of dollars on American Express and Visa cards, sometimes making $600 charges against his cards several times a day, drawn in behalf of an escort service called Professional Services Inc.
Members of major news organizations also procured escort services from the ring, credit card documents show. These include Stanley Mark Tapscott, who was an assistant managing editor of The Washington Times. Mr. Tapscott, whose resignation on June 20 was accepted, said he had not procured homosexual escorts or sexual services of any kind. He said in an interview that he had talked to two women he arranged to meet through the escort service as part of an investigation of a dial-a-porn services he had initiated a year earlier when he was editor of the newspaper’s Money section. The charges were made against his company American Express card. His editors knew of no such investigation.Before joining The Times, Mr. Tapscott worked for the Office of Personnel Management in the Reagan administration.Managers of the escort ring said that a few women were used for clients who called with specific requests but that the regular stable was altogether male.The documents show that a number of clients — lawyers, doctors and business executives — used corporate credit cards to procure escort services and that a number of military officers from the United States and allied countries — including one foreign officer using a Department of Defence credit card — charged male escort services.One former top-level Pentagon officer said that for the past eight years, military and civilian intelligence authorities have been concerned that a nest of homosexuals at top levels of the Reagan administration may have been penetrated by Soviet-backed espionage agents posing as male prostitutes, said one former top-level Pentagon official.
A major concern, said the former official with longtime ties to top-ranking military intelligence officers, was that hostile foreign intelligence services were using young male prostitutes to compromise top administration homosexuals, thus making them subject to blackmail.We have known for many, many years that there is a department of the KGB [Soviet intelligence] whose job it is to prey on sexual deviants, said retired Lt. Gen. Daniel Graham, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency.Because closet homosexuals in government service can be easily turned through blackmail for espionage purposes, Gen. Graham said, we have always in intelligence tried very hard not to be giving classified information to known homosexuals.Those interviewed by The Times confirmed that there were blackmail attempts by male prostitutes who wanted money and other favors to protect clients’ sexual lives.The clients interviewed say a Feb. 28 police raid on a house at 6004 34th Place NW was set off by reports of blackmail and possible credit-card fraud complaints and by District hotel operators about prostitution activities.In the raid, spearheaded by the Washington Field Office of the U.S. Secret Service, authorities found a telephone switchboard operation serving a half-dozen homosexual escort services.Secret Service agents and District police vice investigators confiscated financial records, as well as ledgers, photos, diaries, telephone records, Rolodexes and client lists of the prostitution network, during the raid and with subsequent subpoenas issued by D.C. Superior Court.Although the confiscated material was turned over to District police on the scene, witnesses and law enforcement agents say the Secret Service kept one box containing names and other information about high-level government officials who were clients of the male escort business.District police officials say that, to their knowledge, this is the first time the Secret Service has ever become involved in such a raid in this area.
Initially, the Secret Service denied it was involved in the raid, but after a second raid of the 34th Place house on May 18, the agency acknowledged its involvement in the investigation.Secret Service spokesman Bob Snow said the agency participated in the search and seizure operation because of its jurisdiction over credit card fraud. We come into such operations usually at the request of a U.S. attorney … if the fraud involves $10,000 or more … We are not involved in any local prostitution investigation, said Mr. Snow.Witnesses to the February raid said 12 Secret Service agents in blue parkas entered the house and spent several hours collecting and removing boxes of files.Federal and District investigators have since interrogated several prostitutes working for the ring, as well as clients of homosexual escort services operating under such names as Jovan, Man-to-Man, Metrodate, Ultimate Models and Ultimate First Class.In addition to credit-card fraud, the investigation is said to be focused on illegal interstate prostitution, abduction and use of minors for sexual perversion, extortion, larceny and related illicit drug trafficking and use by prostitutes and their clients.One of the chief operators of Professional Services Inc. and a regular client of the service speculated in separate interviews that the investigation would be restricted because big names were involved.Henry Vinson [the operator] said a high level official is going to try to block the investigation and may succeed, said Mr. Balach, the labor secretary's liaison to the White House. Mr. Vinson said he believes a highly placed federal official, whom he would not name, is working to derail the investigation, but he would not elaborate.Authorities have been investigating possible credit card fraud by the ring operators since last fall.
Operators of the ring told The Times that videotapes, audio tapes and still photographs were made of sex acts performed by clients and the call boys, including perverted acts.Documents show that customers were charged for videotapes from the operation.

A homosexual prostitution ring is under investigation by federal and District authorities and includes among its clients key officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, military officers, congressional aides and US and foreign businessmen with close social ties to Washington's political elite, documents obtained by The Washington Times reveal.
One of the ring's high-profile clients was so well-connected, in fact, that he could arrange a middle-of-the-night tour of the White House for his friends on Sunday, July 3, of last year. Among the six persons on the extraordinary 1 a.m. tour were two male prostitutes.Federal authorities, including the Secret Service, are investigating criminal aspects of the ring and have told male prostitutes and their homosexual clients that a grand jury will deliberate over the evidence throughout the summer, The Times learned.Reporters for this newspaper examined hundreds of credit-card vouchers, drawn on both corporate and personal cards and made payable to the escort service operated by the homosexual ring. Many of the vouchers were run through a so-called sub-merchant account of the Chambers Funeral Home by a son of the owner, without the company's knowledge.Among the client names contained in the vouchers - and identified by prostitutes and escort operators - are government officials, locally based US military officers, businessmen, lawyers, bankers, congressional aides and other professionals.Editors of The Times said the newspaper would print only the names of those found to be in sensitive government posts or positions of influence. There is no intention of publishing names or facts about the operation merely for titillation, said Wesley Pruden, managing editor of The Times.
The office of US Attorney General Jay B. Stephens, former deputy White House counsel to President Reagan, is coordinating federal aspects of the inquiry but refused to discuss the investigation or grand jury actions.Several former White House colleagues of Mr. Stephen are listed among clients of the homosexual prostitution ring, according to the credit card records, and those persons have confirmed that the charges were theirs.Mr. Stephen's office, after first saying it would cooperate with The Times' inquiry, withdrew the offer late yesterday and also declined to say whether Mr. Stephens would recuse himself from the case because of possible conflict of interest.At least one highly placed Bush administration official and a wealthy businessman who procured homosexual prostitutes from the escort services operated by the ring are cooperating with the investigation, several sources said.Among clients who charged homosexual prostitutes services on major credit cards over the past 18 months are Charles K. Dutcher, former associate director of presidential personnel in the Reagan administration, and Paul R. Balach, Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole’s political personnel liaison to the White House.In the 1970s, Mr. Dutcher was a congressional aide to former Rep. Robert Bauman, Maryland Republican, who resigned from the House after admitted having engaged in sexual liaisons with teen-age male prostitutes. Mr. Dutcher also worked on the staff of Vice President Dan Quayle when he represented an Indiana district in the House.
A charge also was discovered against the credit card of a former White House staffer who prepared the president’s daily news summary in the Reagan administration. Todd A Blodgett said he had not made the charge.One of the ring’s big spending clients is Craig J. Spence, Washington socialite and international trade consultant, according to documents and interviews with operators and prostitutes who say they engaged in sexual activities with Mr. Spence.Mr. Spence spent upwards of $20,000 a month for male prostitutes who provided sex to him and his friends, said to include military personnel who also acted as his bodyguards. It was Mr. Spence who arranged the nocturnal tour of the Reagan White House. Repeated attempts to reach Mr. Spence by telephone, fax machine and personal visits to his home, were unsuccessful.Credit card vouchers confirm that Mr. Spence charged thousands of dollars on American Express and Visa cards, sometimes making $600 charges against his cards several times a day, drawn in behalf of an escort service called Professional Services Inc.
Members of major news organizations also procured escort services from the ring, credit card documents show. These include Stanley Mark Tapscott, who was an assistant managing editor of The Washington Times. Mr. Tapscott, whose resignation on June 20 was accepted, said he had not procured homosexual escorts or sexual services of any kind. He said in an interview that he had talked to two women he arranged to meet through the escort service as part of an investigation of a dial-a-porn services he had initiated a year earlier when he was editor of the newspaper’s Money section. The charges were made against his company American Express card. His editors knew of no such investigation.Before joining The Times, Mr. Tapscott worked for the Office of Personnel Management in the Reagan administration.Managers of the escort ring said that a few women were used for clients who called with specific requests but that the regular stable was altogether male.The documents show that a number of clients — lawyers, doctors and business executives — used corporate credit cards to procure escort services and that a number of military officers from the United States and allied countries — including one foreign officer using a Department of Defence credit card — charged male escort services.One former top-level Pentagon officer said that for the past eight years, military and civilian intelligence authorities have been concerned that a nest of homosexuals at top levels of the Reagan administration may have been penetrated by Soviet-backed espionage agents posing as male prostitutes, said one former top-level Pentagon official.
A major concern, said the former official with longtime ties to top-ranking military intelligence officers, was that hostile foreign intelligence services were using young male prostitutes to compromise top administration homosexuals, thus making them subject to blackmail.We have known for many, many years that there is a department of the KGB [Soviet intelligence] whose job it is to prey on sexual deviants, said retired Lt. Gen. Daniel Graham, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency.Because closet homosexuals in government service can be easily turned through blackmail for espionage purposes, Gen. Graham said, we have always in intelligence tried very hard not to be giving classified information to known homosexuals.Those interviewed by The Times confirmed that there were blackmail attempts by male prostitutes who wanted money and other favors to protect clients’ sexual lives.The clients interviewed say a Feb. 28 police raid on a house at 6004 34th Place NW was set off by reports of blackmail and possible credit-card fraud complaints and by District hotel operators about prostitution activities.In the raid, spearheaded by the Washington Field Office of the U.S. Secret Service, authorities found a telephone switchboard operation serving a half-dozen homosexual escort services.Secret Service agents and District police vice investigators confiscated financial records, as well as ledgers, photos, diaries, telephone records, Rolodexes and client lists of the prostitution network, during the raid and with subsequent subpoenas issued by D.C. Superior Court.Although the confiscated material was turned over to District police on the scene, witnesses and law enforcement agents say the Secret Service kept one box containing names and other information about high-level government officials who were clients of the male escort business.District police officials say that, to their knowledge, this is the first time the Secret Service has ever become involved in such a raid in this area.
Initially, the Secret Service denied it was involved in the raid, but after a second raid of the 34th Place house on May 18, the agency acknowledged its involvement in the investigation.Secret Service spokesman Bob Snow said the agency participated in the search and seizure operation because of its jurisdiction over credit card fraud. We come into such operations usually at the request of a U.S. attorney … if the fraud involves $10,000 or more … We are not involved in any local prostitution investigation, said Mr. Snow.Witnesses to the February raid said 12 Secret Service agents in blue parkas entered the house and spent several hours collecting and removing boxes of files.Federal and District investigators have since interrogated several prostitutes working for the ring, as well as clients of homosexual escort services operating under such names as Jovan, Man-to-Man, Metrodate, Ultimate Models and Ultimate First Class.In addition to credit-card fraud, the investigation is said to be focused on illegal interstate prostitution, abduction and use of minors for sexual perversion, extortion, larceny and related illicit drug trafficking and use by prostitutes and their clients.One of the chief operators of Professional Services Inc. and a regular client of the service speculated in separate interviews that the investigation would be restricted because big names were involved.Henry Vinson [the operator] said a high level official is going to try to block the investigation and may succeed, said Mr. Balach, the labor secretary's liaison to the White House. Mr. Vinson said he believes a highly placed federal official, whom he would not name, is working to derail the investigation, but he would not elaborate.Authorities have been investigating possible credit card fraud by the ring operators since last fall.
Operators of the ring told The Times that videotapes, audio tapes and still photographs were made of sex acts performed by clients and the call boys, including perverted acts.Documents show that customers were charged for videotapes from the operation.
