An EMP Threat from Iranian Warship Coming to the US Coast? OCT 15,11
Recent media reports have warned that Iran intends to send a warship to a position just off the USA’s coast (see CNN link and FOX News link below). At first glance, one might think that one such Iranian ship might not be much of a threat to the USA. Iran also has little experience in operating a blue-water navy, and it will have to arrange for ports-of-call and replenishment and refueling options for any such ship stationed just off US waters. I think it would easily obtain support from Cuban or Venezuelan ports, but it takes time to set up such arrangements.
The third link, from the LA Times, discounts the Iranian threat with the statement: It is preposterous to think that the American mainland is under some form of military threat by Iran, [and adds...] The Iranian admiral may bark, but he doesn’t have much of a bite. The author of this article clearly doesn’t get it concerning the nature of the Iranian threat. That one Iranian ship could cause tens of millions of deaths in the eastern USA…with one special kind of missile. That special kind of missile was successfully flight-tested over the Caspian Sea by the Iranian military years ago (see fourth link and fifth link). If the Iranian warship coming near to the US coastline has missiles with EMP warheads on them, it represents a far greater threat than if it had Hiroshima-type nuclear weapons to shoot at the USA.
Many Americans still don’t realize how vulnerable our nation is to an EMP attack by terrorists, nation states or rogue actors. It is a major failure of the US government that it hadn’t enacted a major campaign years ago to warn American citizens about this threat and that major efforts are not underway in every industry and every city to prepare for this type of attack. Put simply, an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) warhead, if detonated at a high altitude, will fry all electric/electronic/solid state/computerized equipment within all areas on the ground in the line of sight of the pulse the explosion would generate. The higher the missile is detonated, the greater will be the area devasted by the missile because it will have a greater event horizon. As hard as it is for pampered Americans to grasp, one EMP blast would instantly put a large swath of the USA back in the 19th century as there would be no electric or electronic functions surviving. All airborne civilian airplanes would immediately crash, all computerized hospital and nursing home equipment would crash, all cars made after roughly 1980 would cease to operate, all civilian radio and TV stations would be gone, all transportation systems for food and energy distribution would cease to function. The entire banking industry and Wall Street would be toast.
A recent book portrays what would happen if three EMP weapons were simultaneously exploded over the USA. It is entitled, One Second After, and it is authored by William Forstchen. It includes a Foreword by Newt Gingrich, a current GOP presidential candidate, who warns that this threat is real and serious. It also includes an Afterword by a retired US Navy Captain, Bill Sanders, who describes the technical aspects of this very real threat which could potentially happen any time. The book should be read by every American, so more Americans would thoughtfully prepare for such an attack…and survive. The book depicts fictional people and events in a rural North Carolina college community which suddenly finds itself on its own when all electricity and electronics simple end one day. I won’t give away the book’s contents, but you will be amazed in reading how large a percentage of the USA’s population could die within one year without any electicity or electronics. As Captain Sanders says about this book: It was an emotional and gut-wrenching read—because it could actually happen.The East Coast, with its high population density cities and minimal food production, experiences a death rate in this book’s account far higher than you likely imagine possible before reading this book.
Please don’t feel helpless. There are practical ways to protect yourself and electronic components if you simply take advance action to prepare for such an event. The sixth link and seventh link examine how you can prepare to protect your electronic components by building Faraday Cages in which to place back-up electronic equipment you will need to restore fried components after an EMP attack. All automotive, utility, communications, health care and other vital industries should be making large Farady cages so they have protected equipment to quickly rebuild their systems after such an attack. As far as I know, no industry is doing so. Congress has been warned and has known about this threat for many years as the last two links document. As far as I know, Congress has responded it is usual manner…by doing nothing.
The US military has known about the EMP threat since before the Reagan years. I was told about it by a now-deceased USAF officer in the 1970s. The book notes that Reagan made great efforts to “harden” military electronics so the US military’s equipment and weapons systems could survive such an attack. Apparently, subsequent administrations have not made essential efforts to make sure military equipment is properly protected. I’ll give away one item from the above-mentioned book: It makes its point that the US government has been so complacent about not making sure all essential equipment is hardened against an EMP attack by having the US President and his entire entourage being among the first to die because Air Force One was in the air at the time the EMP attack occurred and all its equipment was not EMP-protected. I suggest you read the book, but it is gut-wrenching, indeed. You will never look at our high-tech society the same after reading this book. I’ll also briefly mention that the book is significantly in harmony with the warnings of my Gog-Magog blog as it has a major Asian nation [hint: their capital is Beijing] occupying a large swath of the western USA with its foreign army as the book concludes.
We Americans (and Westerners) live in a Fool’s Paradise, thinking we are invulnerable to attack and that the delicate high-tech systems our lives depend on are oh-so permanent. The fictional book, One Second After, depicts the USA being hit with three EMP missile blasts fired from ships off our coasts. In the real world, we now have reports that Iran is about to station a warship off our coasts and we know Iran successfully test-fired EMP-capable missiles years ago. Do they also have EMP warheads, either produced in Iran or bought from China, Pakistan or Russia? Iran calls the USA the Great Satan, so we are their number one target. I hope the US military keeps a very close watch on that Iranian ship when/if it arrives within missile range of the USA, and that assets are in place to shoot down any missile fired from that ship as soon as it is launched to limit the likely EMP damage to the USA.

Frankly, every American, Christian or not, should make reasonable preparations for themselves and their families, but many Christians have an escapist attitude masquerading as faith which can be summed up as: I don’t have to do anything, God will take care of me no matter what happens.The Bible exposes that attitude as dead wrong. When God gives people advance warnings about future calamities, he expects people to take action or else. If Noah hadn’t built the Ark after God warned him about a future Deluge, Noah and the human race would have perished. If Joseph had not made prodigious preparations for a seven-year famine about which God gave advance warning, Egypt and its surrounding populations would have starved to death. God has given many advance warnings to Bible-readers that in the latter days, global calamities will occur, so, like Noah and Joseph, we have been given advance warnings and God holds us responsible for being warned. Noah and Joseph heeded God’s warnings and made serious preparations…and lived. What kind of preparations have you made?

EU commission willing to meet Indignados in Brussels

The European Commission is willing to meet with representatives of the growing indignado anti-austerity movement and has actively attempted to make contact with the young people, a contingent of whom who have marched from Madrid to Brussels protesting a European Union they say places the interests of banks and big business ahead of ordinary citizens.If the indignados come here, Of course I would feel obliged to meet with them, employment and social affairs commissioner Laszlo Andor told reporters on Thursday (13 October).Inspired by the Arab Spring, the non-violent movement kicked off on 15 May as young people took over the squares of Spanish cities. The scale of the protests have waxed and waned throughout the year, but between 6.5 million and 8 million Spaniards have participated in the protests according to an estimate by RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster, and pollsters report that some 80 percent of the population back their cause.Last weekend, a group of indignados arrived in Brussels after an 80 day trek from Spain. Hundreds of marchers have also made their way to the European capital from Germany and the Netherlands.The Spanish indignados have in turn inspired similar protests in Greece, Israel, Pakistan, India and the United States, where under a different title - first Occupy Wall Street, then Occupy Boston, Chicago and so on - encampments of young people have targetted stock exchanges and other symbols of economic power.
Whatever they call themselves, the movement, which has won high-profile backing from Joseph Stiglitz, the former chief economist of the World Bank, and Paul Krugman, winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics, has clearly tapped into a vein of popular dissatisfaction with high unemployment and cuts to social programmes while banks receive trillions in bail-outs. The protests have since spread to over a 150 cities around the world.On Saturday, demonstrations are planned in 951 cities and 82 countries, the movement claims.The Hungarian commissioner, who had a long history on the academic left before joining the EU executive, said: I am absolutely sympathetic about exposing indignation about unemployment.However, he criticised their targetting of EU institutions: They should be aware that the Spanish situation was not created here ... to target the European Commission is probably not right.They should go to Frankfurt instead,he joked in a reference to the headquarters of the European Central Bank.Andor’s staff have tried to make contact with the protestors via the commission’s offices in Spain. They add that the commissioner would even be willing to visit the Parc Elizabeth in the European capital, where they have set up camp.If he were invited to the park where they are camped, he could come. He would consider an invitation,said one official.He’s open. Why would he not be willing to meet them? But the indignados must come with a concrete series of complaints to discuss, his staff say: There has to be a minimum of things to talk about. They have to be really forward with what they want. [The commissioner] does not want to talk about food additives or nuclear power. But he could talk about unemployment and jobs. Do they see a case for European intervention in this area? The openness on the part of the employment commissioner contrasts with their reception at the European Parliament on Tuesday after they had been asked by a left-wing Spanish MEP, Willy Meyer, to a meeting to discuss their concerns.Despite being invited into the building by the euro-deputy, Belgian riot police, including officers on horseback, blocked a group of about 30 indignados from entering the building upon the request of the parliament’s services.
A group of seven was finally let in after MEPs complained.The security services behaved in an unacceptable manner to prevent the indignados from entering and treated them like criminals, instead of ordinary people coming in peace to present their concerns, said Meyer after the incident.A spokesman for the left-wing United European Left grouping in the chamber, David Lundy, told EUobserver: It was just so over the top. These people had zero intention of storming the parliament. And to think that the square in front of the parliament has just been renamed Solidarnosc Esplanade, after another democracy protest movement.

This website caught up with one of the activists involved who arrived in Brussels separately from the marchers to meet with NGOs and discuss the growing protest movement.Javier Toret, a Barcelona organiser with Democracy Real Ya (Real Democracy Now), the grassroots citizens' organization that was one of the catalysts for the wider protests, explained why they are targetting the EU and not just their own domestic political and economic elites.We believe that real democracy is no longer possible in one country, but on a European level, he said.The commission, the European Central Bank - they are imposing austerity on us, yet they are not democratic institutions. They are not elected by citizens and they do not represent our interests.He says the movement is not anti-EU, but that in the wake of the crisis, the whole European project must be rebuilt from the ground up.Listing a set of far-reaching demands that extend well beyond not merely commissioner Andor’s areas of responsibility, but all the legal powers of the EU executive, Toret did not apologise for the movement’s radical aims.It is necessary to completely refound the EU institutions,he said, adding a comment that could perhaps have come out of the mouth of former Belgian prime minister and arch euro-federalist Guy Verhofstadt:We need a new European constitution written by the citizens.He said that the attempt at writing a European constitution that was defeated by referendums in France and Netherlands in 2005 was doomed to fail because this was organised in a top-down fashion and constitutionalised neo-liberalism at the EU level.This constitution should define new principles of social justice across the European continent, that puts an end to the privileges of politicians and bankers, that goes beyond our current system of political parties and representative democracy and embraces participatory democracy.He insists that such demands are not hopelessly idealistic and points to an EU-accession candidate as an example. He wants European citizens to draft the document directly, like they are doing in Iceland.

Cracks show in EU austerity doctrine

If the subtle change in emphasis in the EU’s discourse on austerity is to be believed, some in the bloc are beginning to be much more open to policy options beyond public-sector cutbacks.On Thursday (14 October) in a speech to Europe's great and good at an annual Brussels pow-wow of government ministers, journalists, businessmen and even nobility, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso marked a change in strategy, or at least in the rhetoric surrounding the bloc's policy response.Are austerity cutbacks the right solution for Europe’s economic woes? he asked.Responding to his own question, he declared: As you may have guessed, dear friends, the commission does not believe that cutbacks are the solution to Europe's challenges.At the same conference, Poland's finance minister, Jan Rostowski, warned that Cuts could - and this really is true - can make the recession worse.He described a vicious cycle wherein the imposition of austerity on a weak economy can suppress demand, which then inhibits companies' willingness to invest, which frightens other firms from investing and encourages households to save instead of spend. As the economy takes a nosedive, government revenues decline, expanding public debts, forcing further public-spending cutbacks.Brussels has certainly not abandoned austerity as a solution to the eurozone's debt crisis, but some leaders are beginning to concede that it is not the only solution.Yes, sound public finances are an essential part of sustainable growth; they are an essential part of confidence and without confidence there is no growth, Barroso continued.[But] to focus solely on cuts suggests that government over-spending was the only source of the crisis. In fact, we all know that problems with the behaviour and regulation of the financial sector, and problems of political will, are also factors in this crisis.
Barroso warned that the wrong type of austerity could reduce demand and prevent an exit from crisis. We also know that the wrong sorts of cuts could simply send Europe into recession.He said that fiscal consolidation must be joined to structural reform in the public sector - a form of cuts by another name, some, particularly the trade unions that represent government employees, would say.He also said that there is little room for a new round of public spending to kick-start the economy: New growth cannot be funded through more and more public debt,he continued.It is clear that there is more room for structural reform than for fiscal stimulus.But he emphasised the need for investment in new infrastructure in the energy, transport and digital sectors and highlighted the commission’s proposals for the bloc's multi-year budget. The budget ideas involve a new €50 billion investment in infrastructure and EU-level project bonds that could be sold to raise cash for such investments.This effort should be part of a huge pan-European investment programme, which includes an increase in the capital of the triple-A-rated European Investment Bank,he said.The speech paralleled similar comments from European employment commissioner Laszlo Andor, who said that the next bail-out programme for Greece must be a massive, multi-year reconstruction plan, not just another round of austerity.Greece needs to have a reconstruction programme. That's why it's very important how the next programme for Greece, which is in the pipeline, will be orchestrated,he told reporters on Thursday. Will it be orchestrated and presented as another programme of austerity, which will ensure that there are further cuts in expenditure in Greece, or presented in a way that ... launches infrastructure building in Greece?
Bleeding to death

It is a reconstruction plan, it is not punishing but supporting, so long as there is transformation.Ando added that any shift in EU economic strategy is a very incremental one.He said each time EU leaders meet, the debate shifts slightly: You get a bit of a haircut [for bondholders], in another you get a financial transactions tax, in another one a bit of co-financing, but it comes in a very piecemeal way.The question is whether we can develop a critical mass in terms of these new types of measures, which he suggested would depend more on publicly co-ordinated finance than on the private sector.It’s not unheard of that a country depends on multi-lateral loans instead of financial markets. It’s relatively recent that sovereign borrowing is based on financial markets.
Nato and EU expand mission in northern Kosovo

Nato and EU police (Eulex) on Thursday (13 October) stepped up their patrols in northern Kosovo and said they will dismantle barricades set up by Serbs, advising them to stay away from illegal protests.The joint forces dismantled a parallel road created by the local Serbs around the Jarinje crossing point in northern Kosovo to help prevent illegal use of a side road around the official gate and stop smuggling, a Nato press release reads.Nato forces also have the right to remove barricades when the circumstances are appropriate and will not tolerate them indefinitely. Citizens should stay away from the road blockades and barricades, and should not take part in illegal protest activities, the statement added.Last month, Nato had to step in when violence erupted at the Jarinje crossing point, with Serbs setting the border post on fire and bulldozing it. Ethnic tensions have flared in the majority-Serb part of Kosovo after Pristina decided to regain control of its border crossings in July and enforce a trade ban on Serbian goods. A Kosovo policeman was shot dead in the ensuing clashes.Serbia, along with five EU member states, have not recognised Kosovo's independence, declared in 2008. EU police and Nato peacekeeping forces are trying to defuse tensions and clamp down on organised crime and trafficking.Belgrade is under pressure from the EU to resume talks with Kosovo in returning for being allowed to start membership talks with the bloc.Despite accusations from Pristina, the Serbian government maintains that it has nothing to do with the manning of barricades in northern Kosovo. Speaking to B92 radio last week, Serbian minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic said that protesters were ordinary people protesting peacefully, including members of his own family, and that nobody had links with criminal gangs.

Egyptian daily Al-Masri Al-Youm reported late Wednesday that Hamas moved captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit into Egypt pursuant to the deal brokered with Israel for his release.Egyptian officials reportedly told the newspaper Shalit was transferred to Egypt through the Rafiah crossing.According to eyewitnesses, Shalit was driven through the Rafah crossing in a black car that has not undergone any inspection – a common procedure used when moving senior Hamas officials.Shalit, who was kidnapped by Hamas six years ago, has been held in captivity as a bargaining chip for the release of terrorists from Israeli jails. He expected to be handed over to Israel as soon as the prisoner exchange begins on Teusday.His alleged transfer comes on the heels of the government of Binyamin Netanyahu agreeing to release 1,027 prisoners – including some 450 terrorists – from Israeli prisons. Among those to be released are terrorists with soldiers’ blood on their hands and the Sbarro murderess.Hamas has hailed the deal as a victory over Israel and proof kidnapping is a working tactic for the organization – promising more kidnappings and that the freed terrorists would return to haunt Israel in the future.
While Shalit’s release has been met with jubilant celebrations from his family and the mainstream Israeli media, the terms have drawn sharp criticism from a broad spectrum including the families of terror victims, soldiers involved in counter-terror operations, nationalist politicians, and security officials who predict the move will result in spilled Israeli blood.Earlier this week Shin Bet Security chief Yoram Cohen described the deal as tough and difficult, noting 28 confirmed murderers were among the terrorists being released.Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategic Affairs Moshe Yaalon – one of only three ministers to vote against the deal – said the deal was a capitulation to terror which would result in tens if not hundreds of murdered Israelis in the years to come.Hamas proudly summarized the deal saying Israel had promised peace, while they had promised terrorism.

Hamas leaders are telling Arabic media that Israel agreed to release terrorists in exchange for Gilad Shalit without a commitment from the terrorist group to stop kidnapping soldiers. Israel tried to get a commitment, but agreed to go ahead without one, according to sources quoted by the pan-Arabic paper Al-Hayat.Hamas also claimed that they managed to extract a promise from Israel not to harm the more than 1,000 terrorists to be released in exchange for Shalit in any way.The report contradicts what Shin Bet head Yoram Cohen said about the planned prisoner release. Cohen told journalists that the exchange deal does not include any Israeli commitment regarding released terrorists’ future.Hamas has portrayed the Shalit prisoner exchange as a victory, and has openly vowed to kidnap more Israelis in order to free more prisoners. Among those who will be released are terrorists who have committed murder, although several senior terrorists will remain in prison.

Relatives of victims of terrorist attacks have filed an emergency lawsuit against the release of terrorists in exchange for kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. The suit was filed with the help of the Almagor organization for victims of terror.The government has agreed to release more than 1,000 terrorists in exchange for Shalit, including murderers and those who took part in previous kidnappings of IDF soldiers. The release deal has been controversial, with some warning that it will cause a wave of terrorism, while others argue that the state has an obligation to return kidnapped soldiers.The families of those murdered in the Sbarro spearheaded a suit against the release and have launched a campaign to remove the Sbarro murderess who drove the bomber to the site from the list of those to be released.. Fifteen people lost their lives in the suicide bombing. How can any one of us decide if the life (or the remains) of one soldier justifies setting free numerous terrorists who murdered in cold blood and are certain to do so again? This is exactly the reason for the existence of such guidelines, well thought out in advance, that should be followed when the pressure is immense and the considerations go beyond the individual being held in captivity.For five long years Israel has not dared, or was unable due to a plethora of reasons, to free Gilad Shalit from captivity, dead or alive. There was intelligence suggesting he was in Sudan and not in the tunnels of Gaza. Israel did not, probably could not, do anything. It was so much easier to pull off miracles when less of the world was complicit in such deep anti-Israel hatred as today.Imagine, just for a second, Israeli Special Forces setting Shalit free now. Imagine that the agreement now being reached had exposed the whereabouts of Shalit and opened a window of opportunity to act. Unlikely, but what a comforting thought.Instead, what Israel should—but will not—do is to extract a price, so dear, so painful, so outrageous that Hamas, Hizbullah and any other Iranian crony will know: DO NOT MESS WITH US.Why are terrorists receiving clemency from a death sentence to vacation-and-receive-education in Israel? Israel does not execute murderers (with the exception of Eichmann). It is time for this policy to change. Expedite the departure of these sub-humans, their early introduction to the 72 virgins awaiting them (and whatever awaits female suicide bombers).
Enter Israel to kidnap another soldier? Israel should mercilessly go on the offensive and respond. Israel tried to do so in the Second War in Lebanon (which exposed the Israeli military as unprepared and untrained). Has any lesson been learned? Will it be any different tomorrow? The next time they commit their atrocities against Israelis? We cannot, say those at the helm.Our hands are tied, say the lawyers. We must not, say the conscientious objectors who care more about the enemy than about human life.So here is the guarantee: Shalit is not the last, and what will Israel hold next time as a bargaining chip? If all red lines have been wiped out and ignored this time around, why would an enemy respect Israel and not demand more? Israel’s enemies know and understand preciousness of one Jewish life to the Jewish people, and they use this to their ultimate advantage.May Shalit return home alive with body and faculties unscathed. Yet, those concerned about Shalit’s mental health after five years in captivity should also consider the mental health of the hundreds of families whose loved ones perished at the hands of these terrorists, now being freed, who chose unspoken cruelty and executed their missions in cold blood. Who will consol and comfort them? From where will they derive strength when they go to comfort and support all the new families sure to be entered to the circle of misery and sorrow? Terror will not end. Democratically elected Hamas has a face, hands and feet. These must be cut, one after the other, until there are no more. Until each and every Gazan understands that Hamas affiliation means certain death. Only then will Israel’s multitude of enemies take a step back and internalize the lesson. Only then Israel might be taken slightly more seriously than the miserable image projected at present.Shalit may be on his way home, but at what price to the State of Israel?

The European Commission is willing to meet with representatives of the growing indignado anti-austerity movement and has actively attempted to make contact with the young people, a contingent of whom who have marched from Madrid to Brussels protesting a European Union they say places the interests of banks and big business ahead of ordinary citizens.If the indignados come here, Of course I would feel obliged to meet with them, employment and social affairs commissioner Laszlo Andor told reporters on Thursday (13 October).Inspired by the Arab Spring, the non-violent movement kicked off on 15 May as young people took over the squares of Spanish cities. The scale of the protests have waxed and waned throughout the year, but between 6.5 million and 8 million Spaniards have participated in the protests according to an estimate by RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster, and pollsters report that some 80 percent of the population back their cause.Last weekend, a group of indignados arrived in Brussels after an 80 day trek from Spain. Hundreds of marchers have also made their way to the European capital from Germany and the Netherlands.The Spanish indignados have in turn inspired similar protests in Greece, Israel, Pakistan, India and the United States, where under a different title - first Occupy Wall Street, then Occupy Boston, Chicago and so on - encampments of young people have targetted stock exchanges and other symbols of economic power.

The openness on the part of the employment commissioner contrasts with their reception at the European Parliament on Tuesday after they had been asked by a left-wing Spanish MEP, Willy Meyer, to a meeting to discuss their concerns.Despite being invited into the building by the euro-deputy, Belgian riot police, including officers on horseback, blocked a group of about 30 indignados from entering the building upon the request of the parliament’s services.
A group of seven was finally let in after MEPs complained.The security services behaved in an unacceptable manner to prevent the indignados from entering and treated them like criminals, instead of ordinary people coming in peace to present their concerns, said Meyer after the incident.A spokesman for the left-wing United European Left grouping in the chamber, David Lundy, told EUobserver: It was just so over the top. These people had zero intention of storming the parliament. And to think that the square in front of the parliament has just been renamed Solidarnosc Esplanade, after another democracy protest movement.

This website caught up with one of the activists involved who arrived in Brussels separately from the marchers to meet with NGOs and discuss the growing protest movement.Javier Toret, a Barcelona organiser with Democracy Real Ya (Real Democracy Now), the grassroots citizens' organization that was one of the catalysts for the wider protests, explained why they are targetting the EU and not just their own domestic political and economic elites.We believe that real democracy is no longer possible in one country, but on a European level, he said.The commission, the European Central Bank - they are imposing austerity on us, yet they are not democratic institutions. They are not elected by citizens and they do not represent our interests.He says the movement is not anti-EU, but that in the wake of the crisis, the whole European project must be rebuilt from the ground up.Listing a set of far-reaching demands that extend well beyond not merely commissioner Andor’s areas of responsibility, but all the legal powers of the EU executive, Toret did not apologise for the movement’s radical aims.It is necessary to completely refound the EU institutions,he said, adding a comment that could perhaps have come out of the mouth of former Belgian prime minister and arch euro-federalist Guy Verhofstadt:We need a new European constitution written by the citizens.He said that the attempt at writing a European constitution that was defeated by referendums in France and Netherlands in 2005 was doomed to fail because this was organised in a top-down fashion and constitutionalised neo-liberalism at the EU level.This constitution should define new principles of social justice across the European continent, that puts an end to the privileges of politicians and bankers, that goes beyond our current system of political parties and representative democracy and embraces participatory democracy.He insists that such demands are not hopelessly idealistic and points to an EU-accession candidate as an example. If the subtle change in emphasis in the EU’s discourse on austerity is to be believed, some in the bloc are beginning to be much more open to policy options beyond public-sector cutbacks.On Thursday (14 October) in a speech to Europe's great and good at an annual Brussels pow-wow of government ministers, journalists, businessmen and even nobility, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso marked a change in strategy, or at least in the rhetoric surrounding the bloc's policy response.Are austerity cutbacks the right solution for Europe’s economic woes? he asked.Responding to his own question, he declared: As you may have guessed, dear friends, the commission does not believe that cutbacks are the solution to Europe's challenges.At the same conference, Poland's finance minister, Jan Rostowski, warned that Cuts could - and this really is true - can make the recession worse.He described a vicious cycle wherein the imposition of austerity on a weak economy can suppress demand, which then inhibits companies' willingness to invest, which frightens other firms from investing and encourages households to save instead of spend. As the economy takes a nosedive, government revenues decline, expanding public debts, forcing further public-spending cutbacks.Brussels has certainly not abandoned austerity as a solution to the eurozone's debt crisis, but some leaders are beginning to concede that it is not the only solution.Yes, sound public finances are an essential part of sustainable growth; they are an essential part of confidence and without confidence there is no growth, Barroso continued.[But] to focus solely on cuts suggests that government over-spending was the only source of the crisis. In fact, we all know that problems with the behaviour and regulation of the financial sector, and problems of political will, are also factors in this crisis.
Barroso warned that the wrong type of austerity could reduce demand and prevent an exit from crisis. We also know that the wrong sorts of cuts could simply send Europe into recession.He said that fiscal consolidation must be joined to structural reform in the public sector - a form of cuts by another name, some, particularly the trade unions that represent government employees, would say.He also said that there is little room for a new round of public spending to kick-start the economy: New growth cannot be funded through more and more public debt,he continued.It is clear that there is more room for structural reform than for fiscal stimulus.But he emphasised the need for investment in new infrastructure in the energy, transport and digital sectors and highlighted the commission’s proposals for the bloc's multi-year budget. The budget ideas involve a new €50 billion investment in infrastructure and EU-level project bonds that could be sold to raise cash for such investments.This effort should be part of a huge pan-European investment programme, which includes an increase in the capital of the triple-A-rated European Investment Bank,he said.The speech paralleled similar comments from European employment commissioner Laszlo Andor, who said that the next bail-out programme for Greece must be a massive, multi-year reconstruction plan, not just another round of austerity.Greece needs to have a reconstruction programme. That's why it's very important how the next programme for Greece, which is in the pipeline, will be orchestrated,he told reporters on Thursday. Will it be orchestrated and presented as another programme of austerity, which will ensure that there are further cuts in expenditure in Greece, or presented in a way that ... launches infrastructure building in Greece?

It is a reconstruction plan, it is not punishing but supporting, so long as there is transformation.Ando added that any shift in EU economic strategy is a very incremental one.He said each time EU leaders meet, the debate shifts slightly: You get a bit of a haircut [for bondholders], in another you get a financial transactions tax, in another one a bit of co-financing, but it comes in a very piecemeal way.The question is whether we can develop a critical mass in terms of these new types of measures, which he suggested would depend more on publicly co-ordinated finance than on the private sector.It’s not unheard of that a country depends on multi-lateral loans instead of financial markets. It’s relatively recent that sovereign borrowing is based on financial markets.
Nato and EU expand mission in northern Kosovo

Nato and EU police (Eulex) on Thursday (13 October) stepped up their patrols in northern Kosovo and said they will dismantle barricades set up by Serbs, advising them to stay away from illegal protests.The joint forces dismantled a parallel road created by the local Serbs around the Jarinje crossing point in northern Kosovo to help prevent illegal use of a side road around the official gate and stop smuggling, a Nato press release reads.Nato forces also have the right to remove barricades when the circumstances are appropriate and will not tolerate them indefinitely. Citizens should stay away from the road blockades and barricades, and should not take part in illegal protest activities, the statement added.Last month, Nato had to step in when violence erupted at the Jarinje crossing point, with Serbs setting the border post on fire and bulldozing it. Ethnic tensions have flared in the majority-Serb part of Kosovo after Pristina decided to regain control of its border crossings in July and enforce a trade ban on Serbian goods. A Kosovo policeman was shot dead in the ensuing clashes.Serbia, along with five EU member states, have not recognised Kosovo's independence, declared in 2008. EU police and Nato peacekeeping forces are trying to defuse tensions and clamp down on organised crime and trafficking.Belgrade is under pressure from the EU to resume talks with Kosovo in returning for being allowed to start membership talks with the bloc.Despite accusations from Pristina, the Serbian government maintains that it has nothing to do with the manning of barricades in northern Kosovo. Egyptian daily Al-Masri Al-Youm reported late Wednesday that Hamas moved captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit into Egypt pursuant to the deal brokered with Israel for his release.Egyptian officials reportedly told the newspaper Shalit was transferred to Egypt through the Rafiah crossing.According to eyewitnesses, Shalit was driven through the Rafah crossing in a black car that has not undergone any inspection – a common procedure used when moving senior Hamas officials.Shalit, who was kidnapped by Hamas six years ago, has been held in captivity as a bargaining chip for the release of terrorists from Israeli jails. He expected to be handed over to Israel as soon as the prisoner exchange begins on Teusday.His alleged transfer comes on the heels of the government of Binyamin Netanyahu agreeing to release 1,027 prisoners – including some 450 terrorists – from Israeli prisons. Among those to be released are terrorists with soldiers’ blood on their hands and the Sbarro murderess.Hamas has hailed the deal as a victory over Israel and proof kidnapping is a working tactic for the organization – promising more kidnappings and that the freed terrorists would return to haunt Israel in the future.

Israel is awaiting his return, alive and sane, into the embrace of a whole nation.The Israeli government, in a special session, decided to free 1000 terrorists in exchange for Gilad.Hamas has ordered Gazans to the streets in a show of celebration and has vowed to continue kidnapping Israeli soldiers and citizens since it is an excellent get out of jail free card.The euphoria is mixed with so much sadness, that one stops in one’s tracks not knowing whether to cry for joy that one person is being returned (hopefully alive and not in body parts as was the case with Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev of blessed memories), while so many of the worst human kind are being let free to engage, once again, in their favorite pastimes:Crushing the skull of a baby, slitting a toddler’s throat, murdering a couple along with their children or a father with his one year old son, or just four people driving together or even just a group celebrating Passover.They do it with glee and fanfare, for only Jewish blood can quench their thirst.
Then they send their own daughters to an activity, such as learning to play the piano or the violin, knowing that she is safe, because Jews would never engage in such atrocities.There were once red lines. There was once (and again) a commission of inquiry headed by a retired judge that made recommendations on exactly how to behave in such cases. It sounds cold, cruel, and we are mere humans. How can any one of us decide if the life (or the remains) of one soldier justifies setting free numerous terrorists who murdered in cold blood and are certain to do so again? This is exactly the reason for the existence of such guidelines, well thought out in advance, that should be followed when the pressure is immense and the considerations go beyond the individual being held in captivity.For five long years Israel has not dared, or was unable due to a plethora of reasons, to free Gilad Shalit from captivity, dead or alive. There was intelligence suggesting he was in Sudan and not in the tunnels of Gaza. Israel did not, probably could not, do anything. It was so much easier to pull off miracles when less of the world was complicit in such deep anti-Israel hatred as today.Imagine, just for a second, Israeli Special Forces setting Shalit free now. Imagine that the agreement now being reached had exposed the whereabouts of Shalit and opened a window of opportunity to act. Unlikely, but what a comforting thought.Instead, what Israel should—but will not—do is to extract a price, so dear, so painful, so outrageous that Hamas, Hizbullah and any other Iranian crony will know: DO NOT MESS WITH US.Why are terrorists receiving clemency from a death sentence to vacation-and-receive-education in Israel? Israel does not execute murderers (with the exception of Eichmann). It is time for this policy to change. Expedite the departure of these sub-humans, their early introduction to the 72 virgins awaiting them (and whatever awaits female suicide bombers).
Enter Israel to kidnap another soldier? Israel should mercilessly go on the offensive and respond. Israel tried to do so in the Second War in Lebanon (which exposed the Israeli military as unprepared and untrained). Has any lesson been learned? Will it be any different tomorrow? The next time they commit their atrocities against Israelis? We cannot, say those at the helm.Our hands are tied, say the lawyers. We must not, say the conscientious objectors who care more about the enemy than about human life.So here is the guarantee: Shalit is not the last, and what will Israel hold next time as a bargaining chip? If all red lines have been wiped out and ignored this time around, why would an enemy respect Israel and not demand more? Israel’s enemies know and understand preciousness of one Jewish life to the Jewish people, and they use this to their ultimate advantage.May Shalit return home alive with body and faculties unscathed. Yet, those concerned about Shalit’s mental health after five years in captivity should also consider the mental health of the hundreds of families whose loved ones perished at the hands of these terrorists, now being freed, who chose unspoken cruelty and executed their missions in cold blood. Who will consol and comfort them? From where will they derive strength when they go to comfort and support all the new families sure to be entered to the circle of misery and sorrow? Terror will not end. Democratically elected Hamas has a face, hands and feet. These must be cut, one after the other, until there are no more. Until each and every Gazan understands that Hamas affiliation means certain death. Only then will Israel’s multitude of enemies take a step back and internalize the lesson. Only then Israel might be taken slightly more seriously than the miserable image projected at present.Shalit may be on his way home, but at what price to the State of Israel?

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has chosen China for his first foreign trip after unveiling his political plan to rule Russia for the next decade.China has overtaken Germany to become Russia’s top trading partner. Trade is up by 45 percent this year, and could triple by the end of this decade to $200 billion. So Prime Minister Putin visited Beijing to strengthen his nation’s most important bilateral tie.The Russian leader spoke in Beijing about growing trade and investment. At every chance, he spoke of the opportunities for joint ventures in such high-tech fields as space, medicine, airplane construction and biotechnology. But at the end of the two-day trip, the biggest deal was for a $1.5 billion Chinese investment in an aluminum smelter in Siberia.Russians' increasing fear is that they are fated to become to China what Canada is to the United States - a convenient source of oil, gas, minerals, timber and other raw materials.Anatol Lieven, a professor at King’s College London, is studying the impact of the rise of China on Russia.Russia, as a whole, would be reduced to something like being the Canada to a Chinese United States, said Lieven.That’s a prospect that the Russian elites find absolutely unacceptable.For the first decade, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a major portion of Russia’s exports to China was high-tech - largely fighter jets and missile systems. But, increasingly, Russia complains that China is copying its Sukhoi fighter jets and other advanced military technologies. Last week, the successor agency to the KGB arrested a Chinese national in Moscow on suspicion of trying to buy blueprints for Russia’s prized S-300 long-range surface-to-air missile system.
Arms sales in the last five years have plummeted, said Linda Jakobson, the lead author of a new report on China-Russia relations for the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The reason is the Chinese have bought pretty much everything that the Russians are willing or able to sell.The other leg of the Russia-China relationship was energy sales. But here Russia also has lost its edge.
For 16 years, Russia and China have been negotiating the construction of two gas lines from Siberia to China. While the Russians bargained on and on over price, the Chinese built a gas line from the Central Asian nation of Turkmenistan to China.On Tuesday, a British auditing company ranked a gas field in Turkmenistan as the second largest in the world. Now, Turkmenistan, once a Russian colony, plans to ship 60 billion cubic meters of gas a year to China - nearly the same volume that Russia has been talking about since the 1990s.The potential for a really substantial gas partnership existed when they started to negotiate the building of two natural gas pipelines from Russia to China 16 years ago, Linda Jakobson said from Sydney, Australia, where she directs the East Asia Department of the Lowy Institute. In the meantime, in the gas sector, as also in oil, China has made tremendous efforts to diversify, she said.Russia, the largest oil producer in the world, long assumed that it had China over a barrel - a captive market. But while the Russians negotiated endlessly about price formulas, China diversified.Russia has not become a major energy provider to China, said Anatol Lieven. It is a significant provider. But Russia still provides the same amount of energy as Iran and only the same amount as Angola.If sea lanes to China become vulnerable, Russia will regain its competitive edge. But, for now, Jakobson says:Russia is only the fifth largest supplier of crude oil to China today. Because China has very successfully diversified its supplies of crude oil.Lieven says that China has grown so powerful so fast that Russia would not dare to join an alliance with NATO or the United States. Instead, he predicts, that Russia will preserve its autonomy from China by avoiding needless conflicts with Washington.He predicts that in the next Putin decade, the Kremlin will avoid:A diminuition of gratuitious Russian troublemaking, probably in the Baltics, in relations with Venezuela, that kind of thing.
Jakobson, who recently completed a 20-year stay in Beijing, said she was struck by how many Chinese have become condescending toward Russia. She recalled an interview she conducted earlier this year with a Chinese political scientist. He grudgingly admitted that China may not like the United States and Japan, but there are things that China can learn from both societies. But he was disdainful of Russia.But Russia? What do we have to learn from Russia? This nonchalance, nearly overbearing view, that is on the rise in China towards Russia is very telling of the change in perceptions on the Chinese side of Russia, she said.As Prime Minister Putin maps out his decade ahead, he clearly identifies China’s rapid rise as a big challenge for Russia.

Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erekat denied on Thursday that PA and Israeli representatives would meet in Jordan to discuss restarting peace talks on October 23.It was said that there are meetings and calls for meetings in Jordan between an Israeli and a Palestinian delegation with the Quartet. This talk is not true. We did not receive anything from them, Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio on Thursday.My view is that anyone who tries to get around the point that Israel must halt settlement and accept the '67 borders is only wasting their time,Erekat added.
The Quartet for Middle East Peace - the European Union, Russia, United States, and United Nations - last week announced October 23 as the date for the meeting without consulting officials in Jerusalem or Ramallah.Quartet officials previously submitted a plan wherein Israeli and PA officials would resume talks without preconditions with the aim of concluding a final status agreement by December 2012.The proposal came on the heels of PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas' unilateral bid for statehood at the United Nations in September, which faces a promised negative recommendation from the United States in the Security Council.To be approved and passed to the General Assembly for a vote Abbas' application for UN recognition and membership would have to win 9-votes in the 15-member Security Council including positive recommendations from all five permanent members.US secretary of state Hillary Clinton last week reaffirmed US opposition to Abbas' UN application was a dead letter saying its going nowhere.Clinton also reiterated President Barack Obama's position, the road to peace lies through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York.But Abbas, currently in Paris for consultations with French president Nicolas Sarkozy, whose nation is also a permanent member of the Security Council, made it plain the Quartet plan holds no interest for him.There will be no negotiations for the sake of negotiations, he said.
Israel has accepted the Quartet plan saying it is ready to resume talks without preconditions with both sides raising reservations at the negotiating table, and is willing to attend the October 23 meeting.At the same time, Israel has rejected Abbas' demand that Israel suspend construction in Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem as a precondition for talks saying it is merely a fait accompli to forestall talks.A previous 10-month building freeze by Israel aimed at satisfying identical PA demands and drawing officials in Ramallah to the table was rebuffed and met with mounting preconditions that ended in Abbas' bid.

Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday rebuffed Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas who had travelled to Bogotá to secure support of his unilateral statehood bid at the United Nations.We want the Palestinian state to exist. But this can only come as the result of a (UN) vote or resolution. The European Parliament is seeking major new powers to conduct investigations, including the right to summon European commissioners, officials and national politicians to give evidence to inquiries into breaches of EU law.The US Congress: MEPs want American-type investigative powers (Photo: wikipedia)A draft report passed by the parliament's constitutional affairs committee earlier this week would give MEPs powers similar to those of the US Congress, where both chambers regularly conduct investigations or hearings, including recently in the oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico.Noting the importance of the right of scrutiny to any parliamentary body, the report says a committee of inquiry should be permitted to conduct on-the- spot investigations, to request documents, to summon witnesses, to hear officials and other servants of the Union or of Member States and to request experts' reports.
Most controversially, EU officials will not be able to claim diplomatic immunity to avoid a summons.British Socialist MEP David Martin, author of the report, admits that this is likely to be the most difficult part of negotiations but reasons that as immunity is there to prevent European officials from being pressurised by member states, it should not be an issue if another European institution is demanding that they come to a hearing.Under the proposals, member states should chase up those not obeying a summons to attend a hearing with the measures they would use in a similar situation at the national level. Member states would also be obliged to punish those who give false testimony or try and bribe witnesses.Those giving evidence may be asked to take an oath - I swear that I have spoken the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth while the whole investigation would be wrapped up with the publication of a report.MEPs could end up asking EU commissioners or high level politicians to appear before the committee.But, says Martin, this would be the result of a broader investigation into breach of EU law as we don’t have the powers to investigate individuals. We are not a court of law.
Three toothless inquiries
The parliament has only ever conducted three inquiries in its lifetime - into a VAT fraud, into the handling of Mad Cow (BSE) disease, and into the financial scandal at the Equitable Life Assurance Society.But they were frustrated at the stonewalling over key documents and witnesses.With its legislative powers strongly increased by the Lisbon Treaty, parliament has been chafing to increase its democratic oversight.
But it is unclear how enthusiastic member states will be about the idea of MEPs being allowed to conduct on-the-ground investigation on their soil and question their citizen and politicians.Unfortunately, I think there will be some scepticism around, Martin says but urges member state not to fear inquiries that really get to the truth.The parliament is due to vote on the report in November. Both member states and the commission would then have to give their consent to the rules change.
MEPs are hoping Denmark, with its strong tradition of parliamentary scrutiny, will give the idea a favourable hearing under its EU presidency, beginning in January.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has chosen China for his first foreign trip after unveiling his political plan to rule Russia for the next decade.China has overtaken Germany to become Russia’s top trading partner. Trade is up by 45 percent this year, and could triple by the end of this decade to $200 billion. So Prime Minister Putin visited Beijing to strengthen his nation’s most important bilateral tie.The Russian leader spoke in Beijing about growing trade and investment. At every chance, he spoke of the opportunities for joint ventures in such high-tech fields as space, medicine, airplane construction and biotechnology. But at the end of the two-day trip, the biggest deal was for a $1.5 billion Chinese investment in an aluminum smelter in Siberia.Russians' increasing fear is that they are fated to become to China what Canada is to the United States - a convenient source of oil, gas, minerals, timber and other raw materials.Anatol Lieven, a professor at King’s College London, is studying the impact of the rise of China on Russia.Russia, as a whole, would be reduced to something like being the Canada to a Chinese United States, said Lieven.That’s a prospect that the Russian elites find absolutely unacceptable.For the first decade, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a major portion of Russia’s exports to China was high-tech - largely fighter jets and missile systems. But, increasingly, Russia complains that China is copying its Sukhoi fighter jets and other advanced military technologies. Last week, the successor agency to the KGB arrested a Chinese national in Moscow on suspicion of trying to buy blueprints for Russia’s prized S-300 long-range surface-to-air missile system.
Arms sales in the last five years have plummeted, said Linda Jakobson, the lead author of a new report on China-Russia relations for the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The reason is the Chinese have bought pretty much everything that the Russians are willing or able to sell.The other leg of the Russia-China relationship was energy sales. But here Russia also has lost its edge.
For 16 years, Russia and China have been negotiating the construction of two gas lines from Siberia to China. While the Russians bargained on and on over price, the Chinese built a gas line from the Central Asian nation of Turkmenistan to China.On Tuesday, a British auditing company ranked a gas field in Turkmenistan as the second largest in the world. Now, Turkmenistan, once a Russian colony, plans to ship 60 billion cubic meters of gas a year to China - nearly the same volume that Russia has been talking about since the 1990s.The potential for a really substantial gas partnership existed when they started to negotiate the building of two natural gas pipelines from Russia to China 16 years ago, Linda Jakobson said from Sydney, Australia, where she directs the East Asia Department of the Lowy Institute. In the meantime, in the gas sector, as also in oil, China has made tremendous efforts to diversify, she said.Russia, the largest oil producer in the world, long assumed that it had China over a barrel - a captive market. But while the Russians negotiated endlessly about price formulas, China diversified.Russia has not become a major energy provider to China, said Anatol Lieven. It is a significant provider. But Russia still provides the same amount of energy as Iran and only the same amount as Angola.If sea lanes to China become vulnerable, Russia will regain its competitive edge. But, for now, Jakobson says:Russia is only the fifth largest supplier of crude oil to China today. Because China has very successfully diversified its supplies of crude oil.Lieven says that China has grown so powerful so fast that Russia would not dare to join an alliance with NATO or the United States. Instead, he predicts, that Russia will preserve its autonomy from China by avoiding needless conflicts with Washington.He predicts that in the next Putin decade, the Kremlin will avoid:A diminuition of gratuitious Russian troublemaking, probably in the Baltics, in relations with Venezuela, that kind of thing.
Jakobson, who recently completed a 20-year stay in Beijing, said she was struck by how many Chinese have become condescending toward Russia. She recalled an interview she conducted earlier this year with a Chinese political scientist. He grudgingly admitted that China may not like the United States and Japan, but there are things that China can learn from both societies. But he was disdainful of Russia.But Russia? What do we have to learn from Russia? This nonchalance, nearly overbearing view, that is on the rise in China towards Russia is very telling of the change in perceptions on the Chinese side of Russia, she said.As Prime Minister Putin maps out his decade ahead, he clearly identifies China’s rapid rise as a big challenge for Russia.

Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erekat denied on Thursday that PA and Israeli representatives would meet in Jordan to discuss restarting peace talks on October 23.It was said that there are meetings and calls for meetings in Jordan between an Israeli and a Palestinian delegation with the Quartet. This talk is not true. We did not receive anything from them, Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio on Thursday.My view is that anyone who tries to get around the point that Israel must halt settlement and accept the '67 borders is only wasting their time,Erekat added.
The Quartet for Middle East Peace - the European Union, Russia, United States, and United Nations - last week announced October 23 as the date for the meeting without consulting officials in Jerusalem or Ramallah.Quartet officials previously submitted a plan wherein Israeli and PA officials would resume talks without preconditions with the aim of concluding a final status agreement by December 2012.The proposal came on the heels of PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas' unilateral bid for statehood at the United Nations in September, which faces a promised negative recommendation from the United States in the Security Council.To be approved and passed to the General Assembly for a vote Abbas' application for UN recognition and membership would have to win 9-votes in the 15-member Security Council including positive recommendations from all five permanent members.US secretary of state Hillary Clinton last week reaffirmed US opposition to Abbas' UN application was a dead letter saying its going nowhere.Clinton also reiterated President Barack Obama's position, the road to peace lies through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York.But Abbas, currently in Paris for consultations with French president Nicolas Sarkozy, whose nation is also a permanent member of the Security Council, made it plain the Quartet plan holds no interest for him.There will be no negotiations for the sake of negotiations, he said.

The European Parliament is seeking major new powers to conduct investigations, including the right to summon European commissioners, officials and national politicians to give evidence to inquiries into breaches of EU law.The US Congress: MEPs want American-type investigative powers (Photo: wikipedia)A draft report passed by the parliament's constitutional affairs committee earlier this week would give MEPs powers similar to those of the US Congress, where both chambers regularly conduct investigations or hearings, including recently in the oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico.Noting the importance of the right of scrutiny to any parliamentary body, the report says a committee of inquiry should be permitted to conduct on-the- spot investigations, to request documents, to summon witnesses, to hear officials and other servants of the Union or of Member States and to request experts' reports.
Most controversially, EU officials will not be able to claim diplomatic immunity to avoid a summons.British Socialist MEP David Martin, author of the report, admits that this is likely to be the most difficult part of negotiations but reasons that as immunity is there to prevent European officials from being pressurised by member states, it should not be an issue if another European institution is demanding that they come to a hearing.Under the proposals, member states should chase up those not obeying a summons to attend a hearing with the measures they would use in a similar situation at the national level. Member states would also be obliged to punish those who give false testimony or try and bribe witnesses.Those giving evidence may be asked to take an oath - I swear that I have spoken the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth while the whole investigation would be wrapped up with the publication of a report.MEPs could end up asking EU commissioners or high level politicians to appear before the committee.But, says Martin, this would be the result of a broader investigation into breach of EU law as we don’t have the powers to investigate individuals. Three toothless inquiries
The parliament has only ever conducted three inquiries in its lifetime - into a VAT fraud, into the handling of Mad Cow (BSE) disease, and into the financial scandal at the Equitable Life Assurance Society.But they were frustrated at the stonewalling over key documents and witnesses.With its legislative powers strongly increased by the Lisbon Treaty, parliament has been chafing to increase its democratic oversight.
But it is unclear how enthusiastic member states will be about the idea of MEPs being allowed to conduct on-the-ground investigation on their soil and question their citizen and politicians.Unfortunately, I think there will be some scepticism around, Martin says but urges member state not to fear inquiries that really get to the truth.The parliament is due to vote on the report in November. Both member states and the commission would then have to give their consent to the rules change.
MEPs are hoping Denmark, with its strong tradition of parliamentary scrutiny, will give the idea a favourable hearing under its EU presidency, beginning in January.

The high-tech munitions, according to Newsweek, are deemed important to any future military strike against Iranian nuclear sites. The deal also includes a network of radar sites designed to help Israel ward off a missile attack, as well as joint military exercises and regular national-security consultations.The Obama administration made the weapon and technology transfer under the cover of headline-grabbing and theatrical disagreements with the Jewish state over the Palestinian issue.Pieczenik said cluster-bombs sent to Israel will be used to target Iranian airfields and immobilize its air force during the attack. In 2006, the U.S. said it would stop sending clusterbombs to Israel after the discovery of hundreds of US-made cluster bombs among the tens of thousands of unexploded munitions carpeting the south of Lebanon following Israel’s most recent invasion of its northern neighbor.

Israel Gets Its Bunker Busters
October 6, 2011: The U.S. has suddenly sped up long-delayed shipments of deep penetrating bombs to Israel. This is mainly a political move (to get more votes from pro-Israel Americans). The original delays of those shipments were also political (to discourage Israel from attacking Iranian nuclear weapons facilities).It all began seven years ago, in a $319 million deal that had Israel buying some 5,000 smart bombs from the United States. Included in the sale were 500 penetrating bunker buster bombs. These could be used against Iran's underground nuclear facilities, or the large number of underground facilities Syria has built over the years. The 500 BLU-109 bunker busters can penetrate five meters (16 feet) of concrete. The deal also included 2,500 909 kg (2,000 pound) bombs, a thousand 455 kg (1,000 pound) bombs and 500 227 kg (500 pound) bombs. The deliveries, especially of the bunker busters, were slow.
Before delivery was complete, there was a war with Hezbollah in 2006. At that point the Israelis really noticed the lack of the bunker busters and urged the U.S. to speed up delivery. More, but not all, of those bombs were quickly flown in. Israel already had several hundred of the GBU-24 penetrators (of about ten meters of earth), but a year earlier had ordered a hundred of the larger (2.5 ton) GBU-28s. This bomb can penetrate 32 meters (100 feet) of earth, or six meters (20 feet) of concrete. The lighter GBU-24 can manage less than half that.Israel had watched (from the air, and via spies on the ground) as Hezbollah used lots of its Iranian money to build underground bunkers in the areas of southern Lebanon that Israel withdrew from in 2000. Hezbollah knew about the capabilities of the GBU-24 and 28, and built accordingly. That doesn't make the Hezbollah bunkers invulnerable. The entrances can be destroyed, and if you can get all the access tunnels, you turn the bunker into a tomb. But with some of the bunkers, not all the access tunnels were known. There's only so much that spies and air reconnaissance will tell you.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer says that an FBI insider told him the dubious terror plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador which has been blamed on Iran was likely manufactured by the Obama administration, because no information about the plot even exists within FBI channels.The plot, an assassination attempt against Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubeir, was pinned on an Iranian-American used-car salesman from Texas and subsequently linked by the Obama administration to a wider conspiracy controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.According to the administration, used car salesman Mansour J. Arbabsiar tried to hire assassins from a Mexican drug gang to carry out the murder, but the head of the drug gang turned out to be a DEA agent posing as a Mexican Los Zetas gangster. The story has all the hallmarks of classic FBI entrapment tactics that have characterized almost every major terror bust in recent times.Having personally interrogated Iranians, Shaffer doubted the fact that members of the elite Quds Force would risk carrying out an assassination in the United States when it would be far easier to conduct such a plot in the middle east.

Israel Gets Its Bunker Busters
October 6, 2011: The U.S. has suddenly sped up long-delayed shipments of deep penetrating bombs to Israel. This is mainly a political move (to get more votes from pro-Israel Americans). The original delays of those shipments were also political (to discourage Israel from attacking Iranian nuclear weapons facilities).It all began seven years ago, in a $319 million deal that had Israel buying some 5,000 smart bombs from the United States. Included in the sale were 500 penetrating bunker buster bombs. These could be used against Iran's underground nuclear facilities, or the large number of underground facilities Syria has built over the years. The 500 BLU-109 bunker busters can penetrate five meters (16 feet) of concrete. The deal also included 2,500 909 kg (2,000 pound) bombs, a thousand 455 kg (1,000 pound) bombs and 500 227 kg (500 pound) bombs. The deliveries, especially of the bunker busters, were slow.
Before delivery was complete, there was a war with Hezbollah in 2006. At that point the Israelis really noticed the lack of the bunker busters and urged the U.S. to speed up delivery. More, but not all, of those bombs were quickly flown in. Israel already had several hundred of the GBU-24 penetrators (of about ten meters of earth), but a year earlier had ordered a hundred of the larger (2.5 ton) GBU-28s. This bomb can penetrate 32 meters (100 feet) of earth, or six meters (20 feet) of concrete. The lighter GBU-24 can manage less than half that.Israel had watched (from the air, and via spies on the ground) as Hezbollah used lots of its Iranian money to build underground bunkers in the areas of southern Lebanon that Israel withdrew from in 2000. Hezbollah knew about the capabilities of the GBU-24 and 28, and built accordingly. That doesn't make the Hezbollah bunkers invulnerable. The entrances can be destroyed, and if you can get all the access tunnels, you turn the bunker into a tomb. But with some of the bunkers, not all the access tunnels were known. There's only so much that spies and air reconnaissance will tell you.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer says that an FBI insider told him the dubious terror plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador which has been blamed on Iran was likely manufactured by the Obama administration, because no information about the plot even exists within FBI channels.The plot, an assassination attempt against Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubeir, was pinned on an Iranian-American used-car salesman from Texas and subsequently linked by the Obama administration to a wider conspiracy controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.According to the administration, used car salesman Mansour J. Arbabsiar tried to hire assassins from a Mexican drug gang to carry out the murder, but the head of the drug gang turned out to be a DEA agent posing as a Mexican Los Zetas gangster. The story has all the hallmarks of classic FBI entrapment tactics that have characterized almost every major terror bust in recent times.Having personally interrogated Iranians, Shaffer doubted the fact that members of the elite Quds Force would risk carrying out an assassination in the United States when it would be far easier to conduct such a plot in the middle east.

The already dubious Iranian terror plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador and blow up the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Washington, continues to unravel into farce with the revelation that the so called mastermind behind the plot is a failed used car salesman described by those who know him as a joke.While The Justice Department is hyping the notion that 56-year-old Iranian-born U.S. citizen Manssor Arbabsiar was participating in a dastardly Iranian plot to kill Saudi Arabia’s U.S. ambassador, details have emerged that make the already farcical case look like a badly scripted comedy.Local media in Austin and San Antonio spoke to several of Arbabsiar’s acquaintances in Round Rock and Corpus Christi, who described him in most unflattering terms, saying that they doubt Arbabsiar could have had any meaningful involvement in the supposed international ploy.He used to drink, smoke pot, go with the prostitutes, Tom Hosseini, an Iranian who has known Arbabsiar since college, told reporters, adding His first wife left him because he would lose his keys every other day. This guy is not a mastermind.Hosseini also told reporters that in college Arbabsiar earned the nickname Jack for his affinity for whisky, confirming that he wasn’t in any way religious and that he couldn’t even pray, doesn’t know how to fast.Describing Arbabsiar as rude, offensive and unfriendly, others noted that he was a floundering businessman who at various points had tried his hand in running a restaurant, a convenience store and a used car lot.He was pretty disorganised, always losing things like keys, titles, probably a thousand cell phones, David Tomscha, who ran the small used-car yard with him, said.He wasn’t meticulous with taking care of things.He never spoke ill of the United States, Mr Tomscha added. I always thought he liked it here, because he could make money.
