Telecommunications giant Sprint has announced the launch of its Wireless Emergency Alerts program that will deliver messages from the federal government directly to millions of Americans as part of a system set to become mandatory on all new cellphones.

Wireless Emergency Alerts allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to accept and deliver warning messages to wireless networks from the president of the United States, the National Weather Service and state and local emergency operations centers. Sprint customers will be able to effectively and accurately receive warnings and safety information via text alerts to mobile phones that are equipped with the enabling software and based on their geographic location,states the press release.Although existing mobile handsets can only receive the messages if their users have opted-in to the scheme, all new models will be designed so as to force Americans to receive the messages whether they want to or not.The federal government is keen to implement a centralized system of control over all communications, with the recent announcement that all new cell phones will be required to comply with the PLAN program (Personal Localized Alerting Network), which will broadcast emergency alert messages directly to Americans’ cell phones using a special chip embedded in the receiver. The system will be operational by the end of the year in New York and Washington, with the rest of the country set to follow in 2012.
Assurances that the system will be voluntary for wireless carriers are completely meaningless given the fact that all the big boys, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon, have already indicated they will participate.Customers will have no choice whether to opt-in or not, they will automatically be signed up by their carrier.
Consumers will have the option….to block all PLAN alerts except for those issued by the president, reports the L.A. Times.In other words, for the first time ever the feds will have a direct line to the millions of Americans who use cell phones and be able to use the messages to transmit whatever they like, whether that be genuine safety information, fearmongering about spurious terror alerts, or political propaganda.The special chip that the government will use to reach Americans is already present in high-end phones like the latest iPhone.The 90-character alerts will be delivered at no charge to the customer and have a distinctive vibration cadence and audio tone similar to what is heard for emergency alerts on broadcast television and radio. Additionally, notification of a wireless emergency alert will be distinguished in the handset’s messaging inbox with a distinctive icon, notes the press release, adding, Wireless users can opt out of all message types with the exception of presidential alerts.As we reported last week, concerns about the public’s reaction to a national broadcast test of the Emergency Alert System prompted the test to be shortened from an initial 3 and a half minutes to just 30 seconds.Before the end of the year, Sprint plans to team up with the New York City Office of Emergency Management, the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, and FEMA to conduct a test of the new mobile alert system.

Criminal charges… anyone?
Based on my experience as an investigator in the private sector for the last 26 years and my research and investigation into the MF Global debacle, MF Global and Jon Corzine could serve as textbook examples of the financial terrorism that is taking place today on wholesale levels, openly, and without shame. It is the looting of the so-called 99 percent, except it is done through convoluted transactions that could keep teams of forensic accountants and an unsullied justice department, if we had one, busy for a long time. It is this type of financial terrorism, obfuscated by an unnecessarily complex lexicon of financial terms, that is at the core of a global monetary takeover by the one percent. It is this type of financial terrorism that will propel our justice department and the Department of Homeland Security to impose financial martial law on the citizens of the United States. It is a globalist’s dream and an American nightmare, and the nightmare will not end unless or until the masses are awakened from their slumber.
How it began
MF Global was a large financial derivative broker that had its origins in eighteenth century England. After multiple corporate splits and changes, MF Global became autonomous in 2007. They achieved the much coveted primary dealer status while under the leadership of former Goldman Sachs CEO, former New Jersey Governor and United States Senator Jon Corzine. The status of primary dealer allowed the company to trade directly with the Federal Reserve and underwrite and distribute financial instruments of the U.S. Treasury.After failing to be reelected as New Jersey governor, Jon Corzine was appointed as Chairman and CEO of MF Global on March 23, 2010. In that capacity, Corzine reportedly invested heavily in the European derivatives market, leveraging investors’ money at a ratio of 40-to-1. In other words, Corzine allegedly invested forty dollars for every one dollar of investors’ money in what could be described as a global casino.It is both relevant and important to point out that this activity was done under the watchful eye of the agency that is supposed to regulate MF Global and other such companies, the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC is headed by Gary Gensler, a former partner at Goldman Sachs during Corzine’s leadership, a former Undersecretary of the U.S. Treasury, and a former senior advisor to both Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama. Gensler was appointed to his position at the CFTC by Obama in May, 2009. Gensler also contributed to Jon Corzne’s campaign and was a senate aide during Corzine’s tenure as senator.
The beginning of the end
As the European markets descended into chaos, so did the investments made by Corzine at MF Global. As a result, MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month. It was then discovered that $630 million of investors’ money was missing.It is alleged by some that at some point, at least $600 million in investors’ money was illegally co-mingled with MF Global funds at the direction of Corzine to hedge his bets and subsequent losses. The disposition of over $600 million of money belonging to others remains a mystery and is being investigated by none other than Gary Gensler, of course.It should be noted that before the dust settled on the MF Global implosion, Corzine resigned as CEO on November 4, 2011, but only after having retained the services of the high-profile, white collar crime defense attorney Andrew J. Levander.While the above is an admittedly simplified illustration of the events surrounding MF Global and Jon Corzine, it is an essentially accurate illustration.
Where’s the justice?
While it might be premature to call for the head of Jon Corzine, it is not unreasonable to demand an immediate and public investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and other pertinent federal regulatory agencies. Of course, Gensler should recuse himself based on his close relationship with Corzine, and a suitable replacement should be appointed.Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, through their FinCEN unit, should immediately being independent investigations of not only MF Global and Corzine, but members of congress who have profited from numerous financial transactions over the last three years with all Wall Street agencies.So far, the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Department of the Treasury have been AWOL in investigating any financial crimes on Wall Street. Obviously, it would not likely be in Treasury Secretary Tim Geitner’s best interests to do so, considering his incestuous involvement with Goldman Sachs and other corporate houses of perceived corruption.It is not just unfortunate, but reprehensible that the American media has been silent about the financial terrorism that has taken place on Wall Street. It is understandable, though, as any serious investigation would most certainly identify the most elite of the elite, including the bosses and owners of the half-dozen media conglomerates that control the entire U.S. news industry.Postscript: In a remarkable display of the selective administration of justice, the state of New York proudly announced today the indictment of former Soprano’s actor John Marinacci for his role in an alleged gambling ring. A distinction without a difference, perhaps?

No one wants a bull in a China closet for a President who breaths emotional fire out their nose and creates wars everywhere while pushing their agenda. However, we desperately need real inspiration and vision, with a passion for keeping our freedoms and American traditions whole and safe. That means drawing lines in the sand and sticking to them, whether the pollsters and political class like those lines or not. That means old fashioned, America courage.A few weeks ago I declared my intention to run for the office of the President of the US. I sent out press releases. Some of you saw the headline article posted by WND.com and other sites. I knew I was starting in as a total outsider, non lawyer, non politician and non millionaire. However, I knew I was a patriot, a visionary, veteran Talk show host who had always represented the cutting edge issues of the American people, and most importantly I was called to do this by God. Some of you immediately think religious cook or fringe at the notion of me even saying that. The truth is, I have never fantasized or imagined being President of the United States. This hasn’t been a career move or positioning for my ego. Instead, God asked me to run, a commoner, a survivor, Mom and patriot with REAL ideas of service for a time such as this. I said yes, knowing how it would sound. The UN has long ago morphed into and Anti Semitic, anti American, money sucking machine. Dictatorship and Islamic nations usually vote us down and continue to assault our best alley in the Middle East, Israel. They have sought to get international taxes from us for mythological environmental disasters of warming, push ‘Rights for the Child’ Treaties, taking away parents rights, tried to get an international court system we all bow down to and sought to have a one world currency. Former ambassador to the UN, and former candidate for President, Alan Keys has also demanded we get out of the UN. Why have we given them 7.7 billion in tax payer dollars? It is time America says no to all this and starts a new international association of countries who promote human rights and freedom. Perhaps our real friends and freedom loving countries could get some important things done without controlling and stealing from the people, or trying to destroy Israel.Demand an outside audit for the Federal Reserve and honest accountability. The Federal Reserve has never had an outside audit since 1913 yet controls our entire economy and all our money. How is it remotely possible that anyone, especially Herman Cain doesn’t want an outside audit for the FED, unless of course you are protecting thieves and money crooks. It is more then a little concerning to me that he was a high up FED official. House cleaning and an outside audit of the FED is only common sense and I think a national security issue. Waste must stop and audits must happen with all Government departments.Stop all federal abortion money supporting any abortions, starting with Planned Parenthood. Let me be plain. Abortion is murder and the complete violation of an American Citizen’s first right according to our Declaration of Independence….The Right to life Get it? It is the President’s job to defend the right to life for all citizens, young and old, imperfect and needy. Life is precious and unique, end of story.Secure our borders and stop all illegal aliens from coming across. Also stop the 200 billion a year in drug trade.
I would do this by putting 20-50,000 national guard troops on the border, tripling border patrol, using virtual and real fences, have surveillance fly overs and use satellite technology. Only then, when the mystery people have stopped coming over our borders and drugs stopped, would I offer an approach for illegal aliens already here. It would have accountability, common sense and compassion. It is completely pointless to discuss any intervention with illegals already here when we do not have a secured border. Administration after administration has not had the will to do so. I will! I will take all steps to gut and destroy the completely unconstitutional health care bill, now being reviewed by the Supreme Court.I will take all steps possible to undo the Start treaty with Russia and put our Nuclear program back where it should be, number 1 in the world.We will be the leading exporter of energy in the world within 4 years and disconnect from OPEC.It is completely absurd that with all our oil, nuclear ability and having the largest natural gas reserves in the world that we still import energy. How dumb is that? We have had no oil or nuclear facilities built since the 1070s. All types of energy will bolt forward under my watch, and quickly. I will close down the incompetent Dept. of energy. If they had been doing their job we should have been energy independent decades ago. Bye Bye energy dept.My final passion and plan if you elect me is my 2% point of purchase tax. I’m so excited about this because it is simple. I’m not a mathematician but a common sense chick. If you include taxing all Government transactions that is nearly 900 trillion a year, yes trillion. That would give America 10-20 trillion a year for her bills and plans. Think of it. No more income tax, payroll tax, excise tax, gas tax, capital gains tax…..any Federal tax! They would all stop. Instead, you would pay 2% when you buy a watermelon, 2% when you buy a car or 2% if you by a stock package. That is it and most simple…..no sneaky or layered taxes anymore.
This would bring in enough money to immediately deliver individuals and businesses from Tax hell and oppression, get us out of our 15 trillion in debt in less then 4 years, build up Social security, Medicare, Medicaid and chips, develop energy and infrastructure projects, while enhancing our military and funding what needs to be funded.No more mice in the bay area studies studying prostitutes using condoms in China and underground turtle tunnels. Those were all great talk show material but beyond corrupt and idiotic.A quick review of the cards in my deck and they are not trick cards.2% point of purchase tax overhaul and stoppage of all other federal tax; leading exporter of energy in the world; real border security and stopping of drug trade; creation of 20 million jobs in energy infrastructure projects, new businesses due to huge tax relief; courting back of manufacturing by cutting intrusive and controlling regulations, taxation and litigation; stopping of all abortion funding of any kind, and the cherry on the cake. It’s Veep Joe Bite Me Biden’s birthday on Sunday and while the whole country is not exactly rehearsing the Happy Birthday song for him, his wife Jill has sent out an email to all asking people to sign his card.I know I don’t usually send you emails, but Joe has a birthday coming up this Sunday, and I’m trying something new, Biden’s wife Jill wrote on an email, (see below), Paid for by Obama for America. The First Family and I are putting together a special card for him, and we’d like as many supporters of this campaign as possible to add their names and messages for Joe.Don’t know whether Mrs. Biden’s little boy Joey was the type to fib about the date of his birthday just to get gifts from his school chums, but I’m with Andy Hefty, of North Star Writers Group, who wrote in June 2010 that he’s had enough of the arrogance of our political class in America and Vice President Joe Biden is at the top of the list.If you haven’t heard already, His High Exalted Vice Messiah Joe Bite Me Biden decided to waltz into a frozen custard shop in Milwaukee the other day. The media was waiting for him with cameras rolling. Can you say Staged event? What’s the first thing he says? Where’s all the ice cream? Joe’s as camera happy as his boss The Messiah. (And they say an old dog can’t learn new tricks.)Back to Joe when he thought he was at the ice cream shop and Andy Hefty. When he’s ready to pay, he asks the manager what he owes. The manager says, Don’t worry. It’s on us…Lower our taxes and we’ll call it even.Apparently, that didn’t sit well with Vice President Thin-Skinned. He eventually walks up to the manager and says (and I quote): Why don’t you say something nice instead of being a smartass all the time? Say something nice.
Hefty concluded his remarks about Joe’s custard shop caper with these words about the pattern he’s observed in politicians, especially those on the ultra-liberal left: Say something to the slightest opposition or ask a pointed question about policy or ethics, and you are liable to get a pie in the face, a camera shoved up our nose, a profanity-laced tirade, or even arrest and harassment.And if writing this makes me a smartass, then so be it. I’ll gladly join as a charter member.Meanwhile, Joe’s birthday this falls around Thanksgiving and many Americans who are not the First Family but still put their families first will be out using food stamps trying to cobble together a good Thanksgiving dinner.Trying something new from Americans scraping their way through Recession would be Stop Spending America into Oblivion.

Israel plans not only to attack Iran’s fledgling nuclear program, but also its civilian infrastructure.Eli Lake, writing for The Daily Beast, cites current and former U.S. intelligence officials who say Israel’s target list includes Iran’s electric grid, internet, cellphone network, and emergency frequencies for firemen and police officers.Officials say Israel has developed a weapon that simulates a maintenance cellphone signal commanding cell networks to sleep and stopping transmissions. It also has electronic jammers that can interrupt emergency frequencies for first responders and police.Iran’s civilian electric grids are connected to the internet and vulnerable to cyberattack with computer viruses such as Stuxnet, a sophisticated version of malware developed by the United States and the Israelis. A retired senior military intelligence officer told the Daily Beast the Israelis also have the capability to launch a denial-of-service attack on Iran’s command and control system that is connected to the Internet.The Israelis will likely use an unmanned drone known as Eitan to deliver a blow to Iran’s civilian infrastructure. The Eitan can fly for 20 straight hours and carry a payload of one ton. Another version of the drone, however, can fly up to 45 straight hours, according to U.S. and Israeli officials, The Daily Beast reports. The Eitan is part of Israel’s special electronic air force unit known as the Sky Crows, which concentrates on electronic warfare.
The existence of a program designed to cripple crucial civilian infrastructure not related to Iran’s nuclear program reveals that the Israeli-U.S. plan is to reduce the country to a Stone Age condition much the same way Iraq was leveled in 2003.
Beginning in 1991 with Bush Senior’s illegal invasion, Iraqi civilians and their infrastructure were deliberately targeted by the U.S. military. Half of Iraq’s agricultural output depended on irrigation systems which were also destroyed.In addition to hundreds of hospitals, health centers, mosques and schools, Bush’s Pentagon bombed densely populated cities, killing thousands. Civilian highway traffic was targeted and vehicles such as buses and cars were bombed repeatedly.Following the decimation of Iraq, the United Nations imposed draconian sanctions on the country that resulted in the death of more than a million, including over 500,000 children. When that failed to unseat Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein (a former CIA asset), Bush’s son launched another invasion of the country in 2003. As a result, more than a million people have died.

In a long running case, a Supreme Court has ruled to limit the use of blood samples collected from newborns by the government.
The case has exposed the fact that there is an ongoing semi-covert movement by state and federal governments to claim ownership of every newborn baby’s DNA for the purpose of genetic research without the consent of individual citizens.The Minnesota Court ruled Wednesday that the Minnesota Department of Health is violating the law in storing, using and disseminating newborn screening test results and newborn DNA.
Overruling a lower court’s decision, the state Supreme Court found that the samples are Genetic Information under the State Genetic Privacy Act, and held that unless otherwise provided, the Department must have written informed consent to collect, use, store, or disseminate [the blood samples].In 2003, The Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF), formerly known as The Citizens’ Council on Health Care (CCHC), discovered that The Minnesota Department of Health had been indefinitely storing the blood of newborns since the mid 1980s, and using the samples for purposes beyond the State’s newborn screening program since 1997.The state treated the activity as an opt out program, whereby if the parents of the newborn infant do not specifically opt out of the process, the state presumes its has informed consent and that the parents have opted in.Consequently, the DNA of nearly a million children is considered government property under Minnesota law.Without the knowledge or consent of the person or their parents, the government has been selling the DNA for genetic research purposes.In 2008, state Health Department officials began seeking exemption for the so called DNA Warehouse from Minnesota privacy law.
Essentially this would mean that eventually every person’s DNA would be collected at birth, warehoused by the state in what is known as a genomic biobank, and sold or given away to private or governmental genetic researchers, who may manipulate, alter or splice the DNA in any way they see fit. Hundreds of samples have already been used in government comissioned studies.Such information would represent a goldmine to employers, insurance companies, medical institutions, and big pharma.Under such conditions we are faced with the prospect of a society that is literally the mirror image of the nightmarish vision outlined by Aldous Huxley in his 1932 novel Brave New World, where individuals are categorized in a social hierarchy according to their genetic traits.In a statement, Justice Helen M. Meyer, voicing the majority opinion in this week’s ruling, writes:The Genetic Privacy Act … restricts the collection, use, storage, and dissemination of blood samples collected pursuant to the newborn screening statutes…The newborn screening statutes provide an express exception to the Genetic Privacy Act only to the extent that the Department is authorized to administer newborn screening by testing the samples for heritable and congenital disorders, recording and reporting those test results, maintaining a registry of positive cases for the purpose of follow-up services, and storing those test results as required by federal law.The case was brought by 9-families who sued the Minnesota Department of Health for violation of the state genetic privacy law.

Their action and this decision now secures the genetic privacy rights and informed written consent rights of all Minnesota parents and newborn citizens.Ms. Brase has been warning of the ongoing move for a a number of years. In January 2007 she issued a written testimony to the Minnesota legislature on the unethical and hidden uses of harvested DNA by the state.

In addition, all 50 states are now routinely providing these results to the Department of Homeland Security.
In April 2008, President Bush signed into law a bill which formerly announced the process that the federal government has been engaged in for years, screening the DNA of all newborn babies in the U.S. within six months of birth.Described as a national contingency plan the justification for the law S. 1858, known as The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007, is that it represents preparation for any sort of public health emergency.The bill states that the federal government should continue to carry out, coordinate, and expand research in newborn screening and maintain a central clearinghouse of current information on newborn screening… ensuring that the clearinghouse is available on the internet and is updated at least quarterly.
Sections of the bill also make it clear that DNA may be used in genetic experiments and tests, both by the government and by researchers chosen to handle the DNA samples and the information that goes with them.Read the full bill here.Many have described the law as the first step towards the establishment of a national DNA database, like the one in the UK.In 2006 and 2007, then Senator Obama filed legislation that would create a national DNA database. The same bill was filed by Sen. Patrick Kennedy in 2008. The bills required parental consent, but all three died in the Senate.In certain states, authorities are required to destroy a child’s DNA sample if a parent demands they do so. Ludicrously, parents wishing to do this must fill in a form like this one from Texas.In other states, parents have to put their request in writing, however, there is no legal requirement for states to destroy the samples.
The subject made national headlines last year as CNN’s Senior Medical Correspondent probed the issue:The practice of taking DNA from all newborns is not limited to the U.S.In the UK, a similar DNA harvesting program was rejected in 2005 by The Human Genetics Commission, who cited cost and ethical problems in a report to government ministers.However, DNA profiling of all newborn babies has since been called for by lawmakers and senior police officers.In December 2009, a Dublin hospital was revealed to have built a secret database containing the DNA of almost every person born in the country since 1984 without their knowledge.The retention of newborn screening cards has also caused controversy in Australia and New Zealand where the DNA has been used by police to help to solve crimes. A sample in New Zealand was used to identify the father of a dead child against the wishes of the mother.There is no doubt that the practice is in operation all over the developed world.The Minnesota Supreme Court ruling is a small victory on this issue. However, unless this practice is further exposed, publicized, and taken to courts across the country, and indeed the world, we could find ourselves sleepwalking towards the basis for a new eugenics movement, the practice of perfecting the human race through genetic manipulation, previously endorsed by Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, and toyed with by the likes of Adolf Hitler.

OTTAWA–The deputy minister of Aboriginal Affairs is investigating whether department officials broke privacy rules in their surveillance of First Nations child advocate Cindy Blackstock.Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan said Thursday during question period that he asked his department’s deputy minister Michael Wernick to investigate the Blackstock spying affair.I have my deputy minister to report whether privacy rules were respected in this case, said Duncan, responding to a question from NDP Aboriginal affairs critic Linda Duncan.Duncan wanted to know why department officials had dug into Blackstock’s Indian status file and other information.Why is this government spying on Cindy Blackstock? said Duncan.As first reported on APTN National News, the department has amassed a large file on Blackstock, who heads the First Nations Child and Family Caring society, according to documents obtained through the Access to Information Act.The file contains emails and notes about Blackstock’s personal information, critical briefings on her activities and evidence that department officials looked into her Indian status records.Blackstock said they looked at her Indian status records twice. The records also contain information on her family, her mother, brothers and sisters.
They have found it necessary to not only put one employee onto tailing, but if you look at the records there are numerous employees on the government payroll who are being asked to comment on what I am doing or to violate my privacy by going on my personal Facebook pages, said Blackstock, in a recent interview with APTN National News.Blackstock has for years been pushing for equity for First Nations children caught up in the welfare system.In 2007, her organization filed a human rights complaint against the federal government claiming discrimination against First Nation children.She says the lawsuit changed her relationship with the department. She said she was barred from a departmental meeting she had attended with Ontario chiefs.They barred me from the room, said Blackstock. And had a security guard guard me during the time I was there.The incident led Blackstock to file an Access to Information request about herself, to see what information the department had on her.

Child advocate Cindy Blackstock, long a champion of aboriginal children’s rights, is on the federal government’s radar, but not for her work improving the lives of children. Apparently the government’s Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (AAND) ministry has seen fit to scrutinize her every move as if she were an enemy.
Blackstock has discovered, upon being inspired to request her file through Canada’s Access to Information Act (the equivalent to the U.S. Freedom of Information Act), that the government has been monitoring her doings extensively, the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) reports. In fact, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AAND) sent personnel to no fewer than 75 meetings—perhaps as many as 100—that she was speaking at, then wrote up reports for her file.The surveillance began after Blackstock, head of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and a member of Gitksan First Nation, filed suit against the government before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in 2007, charging that First Nations children were discriminated against by inequitable child welfare services on reserves. The case was unresolved as of early 2011, and Blackstock appealed to the courts earlier this year.Soon afterward she was banned from a meeting between the Chiefs of Ontario and officials from the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Moreover she was watched over by a security guard outside the meeting, she told APTN. This inspired her to seek her file. Back in June, Mohawk Nation activist Russell Diabo, and Shiri Pasternak, a Toronto-based writer, researcher and organizer, brought to light similar surveillance that involved not only AAND (or INAC, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, as it was known at the time), but also the RCMP. That monitoring of aboriginal groups had begun with the advent of Harper’s first government in 2005.
And in October it came out the Canadian military was watching native organizations closely, with at least eight reports compiled over 18 months about various activities of Native groups.Blackstock, a widely known Native-children’s advocate, received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award this year for public service for her 20-plus hears working in child and family services. She was lauded in 2009 by the likes of former Prime Minister Peter Martin upon receiving the Atkinson Charitable Foundation’s Economic Justice fellowship, awarded to community leaders.
AAND wouldn’t comment beyond a statement released to APTN saying that Facebook and other such sites are considered public. But the aboriginal community reacted to the news on Wednesday.The Canadian public needs to know how the federal government conducts itself when its accountability is called into question, said Grand Chief Denise Stonefish of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) in a statement. We applaud the work Ms. Blackstock is doing for our communities and urge her to continue with her efforts, despite the questionable behaviors of the federal government. Our children deserve to have these tough questions posed to ensure they have the same future opportunities as other Canadian children.The money spent on delving into Blackstock’s personal life—AAND even collected data on her family—could have been more wisely used, she said.I have never had a parking ticket, let alone a criminal record and I have never conducted myself in an unprofessional manner, Blackstock told the Toronto Star. Russian warships have entered Syrian territorial waters in an aggressive move designed to prevent any NATO-led attack on the country under the guise of a humanitarian intervention.

Russian warships are due to arrive at Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian news agency said on Thursday, indicating that the move represented a clear message to the West that Moscow would resist any foreign intervention in the country’s civil unrest, reports Haaretz.
Russia has stepped up efforts to defend Syria in recent days, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov keen to frame the violence in the country as a civil war in defiance of claims by western powers that President Bashar al-Assad has overseen a bloody crackdown on innocent protesters.As we saw prior to the attack on Libya, which was also framed as a humanitarian intervention, NATO powers are keen to demonize Assad’s government by characterizing attacks by his forces as atrocities while largely ignoring similar attacks by opposition forces, such as this week’s raid on a Syrian air force intelligence complex that killed or wounded 20 security police.U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner rejects Russia’s claim that Syria is in a civil war, stating, We believe it’s very much the Assad regime carrying out a campaign of violence, intimidation, and repression against innocent protesters.Of course, we heard similar rhetoric even as NATO-backed Al-Qaeda rebels were commandeerng fighter jets and firing rocket-propelled grenades in Libya, actions also undertaken by innocent protesters, we were told at the time.As we have previously reported, despite overwhelming speculation that Iran will be the next target of a military assault, Syria is the likeliest target for the next salvo of NATO-backed regime change.US President Barack Obama got the ball rolling back in August when he called on President al-Assad to step down. The UN has already withdrawn all non-essential staff from the country.Without Russia’s help, Syria would be largely defenseless against a NATO attack. I don’t see any purely military problems. Syria has no defence against Western systems … [But] it would be more risky than Libya. It would be a heavy military operation, former French air force chief Jean Rannou commented.
Given that the western press has proven adept at manufacturing lies to justify military interventions, whether the actions of Assad’s regime represent genuine atrocities or legitimate conduct in the midst of a civil war remains unclear. Some have claimed the abuses are being embellished, while both former CIA agent Robert Baer and ex-MI6 officer Alastair Crooke point out that the Syrian people definitely want change, but not in the form of a NATO humanitarian assault.

Former French General Jean Rannou has outlined the technicalities of a NATO attack on Syria as a bid to topple Bashar al-Assad’s regime moves closer despite the ongoing failure of NATO’s campaign in Libya to defeat Muammar Gaddafi.Speaking with the EU Observer, Rannou warned that any attack would worsen the country’s internal situation, something that doesn’t appear to have been of much concern to NATO in Libya, but that Syria would be left largely defenseless if western powers launched an attack.I don’t see any purely military problems. Syria has no defence against Western systems … [But] it would be more risky than Libya. It would be a heavy military operation, said Rannou, former chief of the French air force.Nato member countries would begin by using satellite technology to spot Syrian air defences. A few days later, warplanes, in larger numbers than Libya, would take off from the UK base in Cyprus and spend some 48 hours destroying Syrian surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and jets. Alliance aircraft would then start an open-ended bombardment of Syrian tanks and ground troops, states the report, adding that the Syrian air force would pose little threat to such a plan.Efforts to isolate Syria in the build up to a military attack accelerated this week after the Guardian reported that President Barack Obama is poised to make a speech in which he directly calls on Assad to step down.
Russian envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin has warned that NATO’s plan to attack Syria is part of a build-up that will eventually target Iran and lead to “a large-scale war in this huge region”.
“The planning [of the military campaign] is well underway. It could be a logical conclusion of those military and propaganda operations, which have been carried out by certain Western countries against North Africa,” Rogozin said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper published last week.
Russia is fully expected to veto any UN mandate which precipitates a move against Assad. However, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s decision to endorse NATO-led campaign in Libya, with Russia having initially abstained from voting on UN Resolution 1973 back in March, suggests that opposition to an attack on Syria may be weakening.Indicating that an assault on Syria is in the pipeline, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Russia to stop selling weapons to Assad’s regime during an interview with CBS News yesterday.Despite intense western media scrutiny on Assad’s brutal crackdown against pro-democracy demonstrators, both former CIA agent Robert Baer and ex-MI6 officer Alastair Crooke point out that the situation is far more complex.Syrians want change. But whether Westerners believe it or not, most people in Damascus, in Aleppo, the middle classes, the merchant classes and the [sectarian] minorities believe Assad is the only person who can bring in reforms, he said. They fear two things above all else – civil war and Western intervention … They would like to avoid the example of Libya because it would lead them into civil war, said Crooke.As Tony Cartalucci has documented, it appears as thought the establishment press is mirroring how it embellished accounts of Gaddafi’s brutality in an effort to exaggerate the horror of Assad’s crackdown, as the west is prepared for yet another war even as America and the economies of major powers in Europe begin to crumble.However, the desire to strike Syria is somewhat less enthusiastic than NATO’s willingness to go into Libya, which as Pepe Escobar points out, might have something to do with the fact that Syria, unlike Libya, is not sitting on immense oil and gas wealth.
Escobar adds that Syria will only become vulnerable if the country’s middle class loses faith in Assad’s government.The Assad regime has done the math and realized it won’t fall as long as the protests don’t reach the capital Damascus and the major city of Aleppo – that is, convulse the urban middle class. The security/military apparatus is fully behind Assad. All Syrian religious minorities make up at least 25% of the population; they are extremely fearful of Sunni fundamentalists. Secular Sunnis for their part fear a regime change that would lead to either an Islamist takeover or chaos. So it’s fair to argue the majority of Syrians are indeed behind their government – as inept and heavy-handed as it may be, he writes.

OTTAWA–The deputy minister of Aboriginal Affairs is investigating whether department officials broke privacy rules in their surveillance of First Nations child advocate Cindy Blackstock.Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan said Thursday during question period that he asked his department’s deputy minister Michael Wernick to investigate the Blackstock spying affair.I have my deputy minister to report whether privacy rules were respected in this case, said Duncan, responding to a question from NDP Aboriginal affairs critic Linda Duncan.Duncan wanted to know why department officials had dug into Blackstock’s Indian status file and other information.Why is this government spying on Cindy Blackstock? said Duncan.As first reported on APTN National News, the department has amassed a large file on Blackstock, who heads the First Nations Child and Family Caring society, according to documents obtained through the Access to Information Act.The file contains emails and notes about Blackstock’s personal information, critical briefings on her activities and evidence that department officials looked into her Indian status records.Blackstock said they looked at her Indian status records twice. The records also contain information on her family, her mother, brothers and sisters.
They have found it necessary to not only put one employee onto tailing, but if you look at the records there are numerous employees on the government payroll who are being asked to comment on what I am doing or to violate my privacy by going on my personal Facebook pages, said Blackstock, in a recent interview with APTN National News.Blackstock has for years been pushing for equity for First Nations children caught up in the welfare system.In 2007, her organization filed a human rights complaint against the federal government claiming discrimination against First Nation children.She says the lawsuit changed her relationship with the department. She said she was barred from a departmental meeting she had attended with Ontario chiefs.They barred me from the room, said Blackstock. And had a security guard guard me during the time I was there.The incident led Blackstock to file an Access to Information request about herself, to see what information the department had on her.

Child advocate Cindy Blackstock, long a champion of aboriginal children’s rights, is on the federal government’s radar, but not for her work improving the lives of children. Apparently the government’s Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (AAND) ministry has seen fit to scrutinize her every move as if she were an enemy.
Blackstock has discovered, upon being inspired to request her file through Canada’s Access to Information Act (the equivalent to the U.S. Freedom of Information Act), that the government has been monitoring her doings extensively, the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) reports. In fact, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AAND) sent personnel to no fewer than 75 meetings—perhaps as many as 100—that she was speaking at, then wrote up reports for her file.The surveillance began after Blackstock, head of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and a member of Gitksan First Nation, filed suit against the government before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in 2007, charging that First Nations children were discriminated against by inequitable child welfare services on reserves. The case was unresolved as of early 2011, and Blackstock appealed to the courts earlier this year.Soon afterward she was banned from a meeting between the Chiefs of Ontario and officials from the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Moreover she was watched over by a security guard outside the meeting, she told APTN. This inspired her to seek her file. That monitoring of aboriginal groups had begun with the advent of Harper’s first government in 2005.
And in October it came out the Canadian military was watching native organizations closely, with at least eight reports compiled over 18 months about various activities of Native groups.Blackstock, a widely known Native-children’s advocate, received a National Aboriginal Achievement Award this year for public service for her 20-plus hears working in child and family services. She was lauded in 2009 by the likes of former Prime Minister Peter Martin upon receiving the Atkinson Charitable Foundation’s Economic Justice fellowship, awarded to community leaders.
AAND wouldn’t comment beyond a statement released to APTN saying that Facebook and other such sites are considered public. But the aboriginal community reacted to the news on Wednesday.The Canadian public needs to know how the federal government conducts itself when its accountability is called into question, said Grand Chief Denise Stonefish of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) in a statement. Russia has stepped up efforts to defend Syria in recent days, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov keen to frame the violence in the country as a civil war in defiance of claims by western powers that President Bashar al-Assad has overseen a bloody crackdown on innocent protesters.As we saw prior to the attack on Libya, which was also framed as a humanitarian intervention, NATO powers are keen to demonize Assad’s government by characterizing attacks by his forces as atrocities while largely ignoring similar attacks by opposition forces, such as this week’s raid on a Syrian air force intelligence complex that killed or wounded 20 security police.U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner rejects Russia’s claim that Syria is in a civil war, stating, We believe it’s very much the Assad regime carrying out a campaign of violence, intimidation, and repression against innocent protesters.Of course, we heard similar rhetoric even as NATO-backed Al-Qaeda rebels were commandeerng fighter jets and firing rocket-propelled grenades in Libya, actions also undertaken by innocent protesters, we were told at the time.As we have previously reported, despite overwhelming speculation that Iran will be the next target of a military assault, Syria is the likeliest target for the next salvo of NATO-backed regime change.US President Barack Obama got the ball rolling back in August when he called on President al-Assad to step down. Former French General Jean Rannou has outlined the technicalities of a NATO attack on Syria as a bid to topple Bashar al-Assad’s regime moves closer despite the ongoing failure of NATO’s campaign in Libya to defeat Muammar Gaddafi.Speaking with the EU Observer, Rannou warned that any attack would worsen the country’s internal situation, something that doesn’t appear to have been of much concern to NATO in Libya, but that Syria would be left largely defenseless if western powers launched an attack.I don’t see any purely military problems. It would be a heavy military operation, said Rannou, former chief of the French air force.Nato member countries would begin by using satellite technology to spot Syrian air defences. A few days later, warplanes, in larger numbers than Libya, would take off from the UK base in Cyprus and spend some 48 hours destroying Syrian surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and jets. Alliance aircraft would then start an open-ended bombardment of Syrian tanks and ground troops, states the report, adding that the Syrian air force would pose little threat to such a plan.Efforts to isolate Syria in the build up to a military attack accelerated this week after the Guardian reported that President Barack Obama is poised to make a speech in which he directly calls on Assad to step down.
Russian envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin has warned that NATO’s plan to attack Syria is part of a build-up that will eventually target Iran and lead to “a large-scale war in this huge region”.
“The planning [of the military campaign] is well underway. It could be a logical conclusion of those military and propaganda operations, which have been carried out by certain Western countries against North Africa,” Rogozin said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper published last week.

However, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s decision to endorse NATO-led campaign in Libya, with Russia having initially abstained from voting on UN Resolution 1973 back in March, suggests that opposition to an attack on Syria may be weakening.Indicating that an assault on Syria is in the pipeline, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Russia to stop selling weapons to Assad’s regime during an interview with CBS News yesterday.Despite intense western media scrutiny on Assad’s brutal crackdown against pro-democracy demonstrators, both former CIA agent Robert Baer and ex-MI6 officer Alastair Crooke point out that the situation is far more complex.Syrians want change. But whether Westerners believe it or not, most people in Damascus, in Aleppo, the middle classes, the merchant classes and the [sectarian] minorities believe Assad is the only person who can bring in reforms, he said. They fear two things above all else – civil war and Western intervention … They would like to avoid the example of Libya because it would lead them into civil war, said Crooke.As Tony Cartalucci has documented, it appears as thought the establishment press is mirroring how it embellished accounts of Gaddafi’s brutality in an effort to exaggerate the horror of Assad’s crackdown, as the west is prepared for yet another war even as America and the economies of major powers in Europe begin to crumble.However, the desire to strike Syria is somewhat less enthusiastic than NATO’s willingness to go into Libya, which as Pepe Escobar points out, might have something to do with the fact that Syria, unlike Libya, is not sitting on immense oil and gas wealth.
Escobar adds that Syria will only become vulnerable if the country’s middle class loses faith in Assad’s government.The Assad regime has done the math and realized it won’t fall as long as the protests don’t reach the capital Damascus and the major city of Aleppo – that is, convulse the urban middle class. The security/military apparatus is fully behind Assad. All Syrian religious minorities make up at least 25% of the population; they are extremely fearful of Sunni fundamentalists. Secular Sunnis for their part fear a regime change that would lead to either an Islamist takeover or chaos. So it’s fair to argue the majority of Syrians are indeed behind their government – as inept and heavy-handed as it may be, he writes.

With the IAEA discussing a dramatic new report from its nuclear inspectors in Iran, are some – such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – exaggerating the imminence of a nuclear-armed Iran? Or is the U.S. government hopelessly misleading us that the threat is manageable through sanctions and tough talk? A series of extraordinary leaks in the Israeli press last week revealed an internal debate within Israel’s inner security cabinet over the need to launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons sites.According to these reports, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak favored the strikes; Vice prime minister and strategic affairs minister Moshe Bogey Ya’alon reportedly was opposed. The leaks came on the heels of the third test-launch of a Jericho 3 nuclear-capable strategic missile, and what Israel claimed were long-planned air force exercises over Sardinia to simulate an attack on Iran.According to former CIA case officer turned novelist Chet Nagle, the Jericho 3 test may have been designed by Israel to send quite a different message than the one being played up in the press.Any Israeli attack on Iran is sure to make of Israel an international pariah, Nagle argues. Plus, the likelihood of success – that is, in destroying or disabling all of Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities so they have nothing to launch on the morning after the attack – is low.
If you’re going to go to all that trouble and be a pariah, why not take one of those Jericho missiles, and detonate it 300 miles above the surface and deliver an EMP strike on Iran? Nagel says. That would stop their clock – if it’s electric – as well as all those centrifuges and everything else. Then the Greens can take over the country and we can go back in and rebuild the grid.Nagel was speaking with me and other analysts last week at a briefing organized by EMPact America for Congressional staff. His comments, while purely suggestive in nature, hint at a much larger strategic truth: if Israel is going to attack Iran, they have to make sure they totally disable Iran’s ability to launch a nuclear weapon.How better to achieve that goal than a nuclear electro-magnetic pulse strike that would take down Iran’s power grid – and with it, even secret nuclear weapons plants Israel might fail to hit otherwise? EMP or not, Israel was certainly making a show of force in an effort to convince Iran to back off its nuclear plans. On that score, from what we see in public at least, Israel had little success.According to Iranian press reports cited on Sunday by the Debkafile, top Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders in Iran were shaking their fists.In one unsigned editorial from the IRGC’s Fars news agency, the Guards threatened to utterly destroy Israel with just four missiles if Israel dared to launch any kind of attack on Iran.Which brings us to the question, what if Iran already had the bomb?
Former IRGC officer and undercover CIA spy, Reza Kahlili, believes Iran acquired nuclear warheads from a former Soviet republic at the end of the Cold War, and has designed its own nuclear warhead with the help of Ukrainian scientists.As I reported in my 2005 book, Countdown to Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran, IRGC commander Gen. Mohsen Rezai traveled to North Korea in January 1993, seeking assistance in arming those warheads. My informant, a top advisor to Gen. Rezai who later defected (and who spoke with me), said the North Koreans agreed to provide that help.From that day forward, Iran believed it had a nuclear deterrent – not a strike force, but at least a deterrent – and its behavior changed. The IRGC believed they could carry out aggressive acts against the United States, including a terror alliance with Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda, and the U.S. would never strike back with any consequence, and certainly would not strike the Iranian homeland.This week’s IAEA report is only the latest in a series of revelations from the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna that has documented Iran’s long march toward nuclear weapons.
Despite these reports, nuclear skeptics continue to claim that Iran is hopelessly disorganized, incompetent, incapable, and lacking the will to defy the international community and deploy nuclear weapons.Just three weeks ago, the same nuclear analyst quoted this week by the Washington Post to sound the alarm about the latest IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear weapons progress, David Albright, was telling folks how the Stuxnet virus had crippled Iran’s ability to enrich uranium.As they say, what a difference a week makes.We’ve had Indicators and Warnings of Iran’s nuclear weapons intentions going back twenty-five years.In late 1986, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency publicly announced it was signing a consulting agreement with a Pakistani metallurgist named AQ Khan. I wrote about this agreement at the time – and continued writing about these Indicators and Warnings as they became known.In 1992, the Simon Wiesenthal Center asked me to compile this information into a monograph called Weapons of Mass Destruction: the cases Iran, Syria, and Libya. At that time, I was looking at patterns emerging from Iran’s procurement of certain dual-use technologies that were needed for a centrifuge enrichment program.It was clear to me then, as it was to many others, that Iran had a uranium enrichment program. But the U.S. intelligence community failed to connect the dots. Even in 2005 when I wrote a narrative version of Iran’s nuclear weapons development program in Countdown to Crisis, noteworthy scholars dismissed my information as sensational and based on faulty sources.This week’s IAEA report shows beyond a doubt that Iran has cold-tested all the components of a workable nuclear weapon design, as I reported in June. It also shows Iran had significant assistance from a Russian nuclear weapons scientists, who for five years helped Iran to design a nuclear weapons trigger.
Rather than a haphazard effort, Iran’s nuclear weapons research was managed through a program structure, assisted by advisory bodies, and that, owing to the importance of these efforts, senior Iranian figures featured within this command structure, the IAEA report found.The program was run out of a Scientific Committee under the auspices of the Defense Ministry’s Education Research Institute, the IAEA found.The IAEA report also shoots down – yet again – the National Intelligence Council’s fatally flawed 2007 National Intelligence on Iran, which stated at the outset that Iran had stopped nuclear weapons research in 2003. The IAEA found that the research continued, underground and unreported.And yet, in a recent talk to intelligence community retirees and other guests, the Director of National Intelligence, Lt. Gen. James Clapper, said his fingerprints were all over the 2007 NIE and that he stood by it one hundred percent.How much more information do we need to understand that Iran is hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and threatening to use them against Israel and the United States? How many more dots do we need before our intelligence community and our political leaders connect them to read the words IMMINENT THREAT spelled out just like that, in capital letters? Iran’s leaders believe the end of days is come, and that by annhiliating Israel with a nuclear weapon they can hasten the return of the 12th imam, the Imam Mahdi of Shiite Muslim eschatology.But in response to Iran’s latest efforts, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the State Department would open a virtual embassy to Iran, and gave an interview to the BBC Persian service where she claimed the Obama Administration failed to respond to the June 2009 protests in Iran because their Iran advisors counseled them against it.
Here’s a novel thought: if our intelligence analysts, including those right at the top, fail to connect the dots, why don’t we just fire them? Stay tuned.

WASHINGTON—The United Nations' nuclear agency said Iran has developed technologies needed to produce nuclear weapons, a finding that puts new pressure on the Obama administration to act more forcefully against Tehran.The International Atomic Energy Agency, in its first public airing of such charges, said Tuesday that Tehran appears to have conducted advanced research on a miniaturized warhead that could be delivered by medium-range missiles. The watchdog agency also cited evidence that Iran has worked to develop the uranium metal used for warheads and said it has conducted computer simulations of nuclear detonations.The 25-page report represents the loudest alarm yet sounded by the agency in a decade-long standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, and comes as Israeli officials have discussed a possible military strike. It will also raise questions over which avenues the U.S., already under pressure domestically and internationally to ratchet up penalties against Tehran following several rounds of sanctions, has left to pursue.The United Nations' nuclear agency for the first time publicly charged Iran with developing the technologies used to develop nuclear weapons. Iran, which has steadfastly denied that its nuclear program aims to produce weapons, quickly attacked the contents of the IAEA report. Tehran's ambassador to the agency, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, told diplomats in Vienna that the agency's work was unbalanced, unprofessional and politically motivated.Some of the information in the report was contained in a secret paper that the IAEA had developed on the state of Iran's nuclear program in 2008 and 2009. But the IAEA's director general at the time, Mohamed ElBaradei, ruled against making the report public, according to diplomats based in Vienna, due to concerns the information wasn't sufficiently substantiated.Successive U.S. and European governments have pressed the IAEA to take a more aggressive public line on the state of Iran's nuclear program. Officials in President George W. Bush's administration complained that Mr. ElBaradei had softened reports on Iran's nuclear program in hopes of brokering a diplomatic agreement with Tehran, a charge he denied.U.S. officials successfully lobbied last year for Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano to succeed Mr. ElBaradei. As Mr. Amano has taken a tougher line on Iran, relations between Tehran and the IAEA have deteriorated.

Israeli officials in recent days have publicly warned that they might take military action against Iran if a more robust international effort doesn't materialize to contain Tehran.Arab states in the Persian Gulf have also been seeking an acceleration of arms purchases from the U.S. to thwart what they call Iran's increasingly aggressive actions in their region.I am not optimistic about the ability to drum up the desire for crippling sanctions on Iran, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio on Tuesday. We can't forget that the government of Israel is ultimately responsible for its own future.

But Tehran razed the offices of the program's headquarters and moved to disperse its nuclear-weapons research following the initial exposure of some of its clandestine activities in 2002.The IAEA said a senior Iranian defense official, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, is a constant in the apparent weapons work, moving in recent years from the Defense Ministry's offices to Malek Ashtar University in Tehran. From here, the Iranian official has continued to oversee a range of studies relevant in nuclear-weapons work, the agency said.The report appeared to contradict the U.S. government's most recent intelligence assessment on Iran's nuclear program from 2007, which concluded that Tehran suspended its weapons research in 2003. The assessment said Iran made this decision, in part, in response to the U.S. government's invasion of neighboring Iraq the same year.But the IAEA detailed a number of areas where Iran allegedly continued to conduct experimentation after 2003. One key area of continuing research is in the computer modeling of nuclear detonations, which is used in developing warheads. The IAEA said Tehran conducted research in 2008 and 2009 on developing the core of such a warhead, which would use highly enriched uranium.The IAEA report said Iran has produced enough fissile material for as many as four bombs, if it is enriched further to weapons grade.
The IAEA also said evidence it gathered indicates that Iran has continued research into triggering devices for nuclear bombs. The report said Tehran acknowledged to the agency in 2008 that it had developed such technology for civil and conventional military applications. But the IAEA said Iran has not explained…its own need for application for such detonators.U.S. officials declined to say if the IAEA's report would cause U.S. intelligence agencies to reassess their conclusions on Iran.The report hasn't concluded that [Iran] put in place the same structured program as before, said an administration official.It also doesn't say how advanced it is.The report also details what the IAEA believes has been expansive support for Iran's nuclear program from overseas scientists. Though the IAEA didn't name all of these alleged collaborators, diplomats briefed on the report said they include North Korea, the nuclear-smuggling network run by the Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and a senior Russian nuclear scientist.The report reaffirmed long-held beliefs that Mr. Khan sold centrifuges for uranium enrichment to Iran. But it also raised concerns that Tehran may have also obtained warhead designs from the Pakistani official.Officials briefed on the report also said the IAEA believes North Korea is the foreign government named in the report as assisting Tehran in conducting computer modeling of nuclear detonations.They said a former Russian nuclear scientist, Vyacheslav Danilenko, is the official cited in the report as making a string of visits to Tehran from 1996 through 2002 to help Iran develop a high-explosive initiation system, which can be used to trigger a nuclear device. The IAEA said they were told during consultations that this work was for non-nuclear applications.
The report's publication is expected to set off another round of deliberations among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on what measures to take next on Iran. Diplomats at the IAEA said Russia and China had lobbied against making public the latest report for fear that it will make Tehran more recalcitrant in its dealings with the international community.The U.N. Security Council has passed four rounds of sanctions against Iran since 2006 that have significantly hampered Iran's ability to conduct business and access the international financial system. But few Iran experts believe the current measures will be enough to cause Iran's theocratic leadership to engage in serious negotiations with the U.S. on constraining its nuclear work.Iran has taken an increasingly aggressive posture in recent days in response to Israeli threats and in anticipation of the IAEA report. Senior officials in Iran's elite military unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have said they will directly target U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan if they are attacked by Israel.They have also said they would deploy naval vessels in the Gulf of Mexico if the U.S. takes a more aggressive posture in the Persian Gulf.The American military should not forget that its generals are present in the region, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, senior Revolutionary Guards officer, told Iranian state media Tuesday. With the IAEA discussing a dramatic new report from its nuclear inspectors in Iran, are some – such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – exaggerating the imminence of a nuclear-armed Iran? Or is the U.S. government hopelessly misleading us that the threat is manageable through sanctions and tough talk? A series of extraordinary leaks in the Israeli press last week revealed an internal debate within Israel’s inner security cabinet over the need to launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons sites.According to these reports, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Barak favored the strikes; Vice prime minister and strategic affairs minister Moshe Bogey Ya’alon reportedly was opposed. The leaks came on the heels of the third test-launch of a Jericho 3 nuclear-capable strategic missile, and what Israel claimed were long-planned air force exercises over Sardinia to simulate an attack on Iran.According to former CIA case officer turned novelist Chet Nagle, the Jericho 3 test may have been designed by Israel to send quite a different message than the one being played up in the press.Any Israeli attack on Iran is sure to make of Israel an international pariah, Nagle argues. Plus, the likelihood of success – that is, in destroying or disabling all of Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities so they have nothing to launch on the morning after the attack – is low.
If you’re going to go to all that trouble and be a pariah, why not take one of those Jericho missiles, and detonate it 300 miles above the surface and deliver an EMP strike on Iran? Nagel says. That would stop their clock – if it’s electric – as well as all those centrifuges and everything else. Then the Greens can take over the country and we can go back in and rebuild the grid.Nagel was speaking with me and other analysts last week at a briefing organized by EMPact America for Congressional staff. His comments, while purely suggestive in nature, hint at a much larger strategic truth: if Israel is going to attack Iran, they have to make sure they totally disable Iran’s ability to launch a nuclear weapon.How better to achieve that goal than a nuclear electro-magnetic pulse strike that would take down Iran’s power grid – and with it, even secret nuclear weapons plants Israel might fail to hit otherwise? EMP or not, Israel was certainly making a show of force in an effort to convince Iran to back off its nuclear plans. On that score, from what we see in public at least, Israel had little success.According to Iranian press reports cited on Sunday by the Debkafile, top Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders in Iran were shaking their fists.In one unsigned editorial from the IRGC’s Fars news agency, the Guards threatened to utterly destroy Israel with just four missiles if Israel dared to launch any kind of attack on Iran.Which brings us to the question, what if Iran already had the bomb?
Former IRGC officer and undercover CIA spy, Reza Kahlili, believes Iran acquired nuclear warheads from a former Soviet republic at the end of the Cold War, and has designed its own nuclear warhead with the help of Ukrainian scientists.As I reported in my 2005 book, Countdown to Crisis: the Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran, IRGC commander Gen. Mohsen Rezai traveled to North Korea in January 1993, seeking assistance in arming those warheads. My informant, a top advisor to Gen. Rezai who later defected (and who spoke with me), said the North Koreans agreed to provide that help.From that day forward, Iran believed it had a nuclear deterrent – not a strike force, but at least a deterrent – and its behavior changed. The IRGC believed they could carry out aggressive acts against the United States, including a terror alliance with Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda, and the U.S. would never strike back with any consequence, and certainly would not strike the Iranian homeland.This week’s IAEA report is only the latest in a series of revelations from the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna that has documented Iran’s long march toward nuclear weapons.
Despite these reports, nuclear skeptics continue to claim that Iran is hopelessly disorganized, incompetent, incapable, and lacking the will to defy the international community and deploy nuclear weapons.Just three weeks ago, the same nuclear analyst quoted this week by the Washington Post to sound the alarm about the latest IAEA report on Iran’s nuclear weapons progress, David Albright, was telling folks how the Stuxnet virus had crippled Iran’s ability to enrich uranium.As they say, what a difference a week makes.We’ve had Indicators and Warnings of Iran’s nuclear weapons intentions going back twenty-five years.In late 1986, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency publicly announced it was signing a consulting agreement with a Pakistani metallurgist named AQ Khan. I wrote about this agreement at the time – and continued writing about these Indicators and Warnings as they became known.In 1992, the Simon Wiesenthal Center asked me to compile this information into a monograph called Weapons of Mass Destruction: the cases Iran, Syria, and Libya. At that time, I was looking at patterns emerging from Iran’s procurement of certain dual-use technologies that were needed for a centrifuge enrichment program.It was clear to me then, as it was to many others, that Iran had a uranium enrichment program. But the U.S. intelligence community failed to connect the dots. Even in 2005 when I wrote a narrative version of Iran’s nuclear weapons development program in Countdown to Crisis, noteworthy scholars dismissed my information as sensational and based on faulty sources.This week’s IAEA report shows beyond a doubt that Iran has cold-tested all the components of a workable nuclear weapon design, as I reported in June. It also shows Iran had significant assistance from a Russian nuclear weapons scientists, who for five years helped Iran to design a nuclear weapons trigger.
Rather than a haphazard effort, Iran’s nuclear weapons research was managed through a program structure, assisted by advisory bodies, and that, owing to the importance of these efforts, senior Iranian figures featured within this command structure, the IAEA report found.The program was run out of a Scientific Committee under the auspices of the Defense Ministry’s Education Research Institute, the IAEA found.The IAEA report also shoots down – yet again – the National Intelligence Council’s fatally flawed 2007 National Intelligence on Iran, which stated at the outset that Iran had stopped nuclear weapons research in 2003. The IAEA found that the research continued, underground and unreported.And yet, in a recent talk to intelligence community retirees and other guests, the Director of National Intelligence, Lt. Gen. James Clapper, said his fingerprints were all over the 2007 NIE and that he stood by it one hundred percent.How much more information do we need to understand that Iran is hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and threatening to use them against Israel and the United States? How many more dots do we need before our intelligence community and our political leaders connect them to read the words IMMINENT THREAT spelled out just like that, in capital letters? Iran’s leaders believe the end of days is come, and that by annhiliating Israel with a nuclear weapon they can hasten the return of the 12th imam, the Imam Mahdi of Shiite Muslim eschatology.But in response to Iran’s latest efforts, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the State Department would open a virtual embassy to Iran, and gave an interview to the BBC Persian service where she claimed the Obama Administration failed to respond to the June 2009 protests in Iran because their Iran advisors counseled them against it.
Here’s a novel thought: if our intelligence analysts, including those right at the top, fail to connect the dots, why don’t we just fire them? Stay tuned.

WASHINGTON—The United Nations' nuclear agency said Iran has developed technologies needed to produce nuclear weapons, a finding that puts new pressure on the Obama administration to act more forcefully against Tehran.The International Atomic Energy Agency, in its first public airing of such charges, said Tuesday that Tehran appears to have conducted advanced research on a miniaturized warhead that could be delivered by medium-range missiles. The watchdog agency also cited evidence that Iran has worked to develop the uranium metal used for warheads and said it has conducted computer simulations of nuclear detonations.The 25-page report represents the loudest alarm yet sounded by the agency in a decade-long standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, and comes as Israeli officials have discussed a possible military strike. It will also raise questions over which avenues the U.S., already under pressure domestically and internationally to ratchet up penalties against Tehran following several rounds of sanctions, has left to pursue.The United Nations' nuclear agency for the first time publicly charged Iran with developing the technologies used to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran's ambassador to the agency, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, told diplomats in Vienna that the agency's work was unbalanced, unprofessional and politically motivated.Some of the information in the report was contained in a secret paper that the IAEA had developed on the state of Iran's nuclear program in 2008 and 2009. But the IAEA's director general at the time, Mohamed ElBaradei, ruled against making the report public, according to diplomats based in Vienna, due to concerns the information wasn't sufficiently substantiated.Successive U.S. and European governments have pressed the IAEA to take a more aggressive public line on the state of Iran's nuclear program. Officials in President George W. Bush's administration complained that Mr. ElBaradei had softened reports on Iran's nuclear program in hopes of brokering a diplomatic agreement with Tehran, a charge he denied.U.S. officials successfully lobbied last year for Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano to succeed Mr. ElBaradei. As Mr. Amano has taken a tougher line on Iran, relations between Tehran and the IAEA have deteriorated.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday accused Mr. Amano of being a pawn of Washington. It's unfortunate that they have put a person as the head of this agency who has no will of his own, Mr. Ahmadinejad said in a speech to Iranian students.The report is based on more than 1,000 pages of documents generated by the IAEA itself, from Iran and from more than 10 member states of the U.N. agency. All of this information, taken together, gave rise to concerns about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program,the IAEA report said.

We fully anticipate ratcheting up our pressure.The White House is facing its own increasing pressure to act more aggressively toward Iran—from Capitol Hill, as well as from its closest allies in the Middle East, including Israel and Saudi Arabia. Israeli officials in recent days have publicly warned that they might take military action against Iran if a more robust international effort doesn't materialize to contain Tehran.Arab states in the Persian Gulf have also been seeking an acceleration of arms purchases from the U.S. to thwart what they call Iran's increasingly aggressive actions in their region.I am not optimistic about the ability to drum up the desire for crippling sanctions on Iran, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio on Tuesday. A reactor at Bushehr, a Russian-built nuclear power plant.While some of Iran's nuclear work could have civilian purposes, the IAEA report said much of it is specific to nuclear weapons development.The report said Iran's Defense Ministry allegedly oversaw a formalized and coordinated nuclear-weapons research program from 1998 to 2003. But Tehran razed the offices of the program's headquarters and moved to disperse its nuclear-weapons research following the initial exposure of some of its clandestine activities in 2002.The IAEA said a senior Iranian defense official, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, is a constant in the apparent weapons work, moving in recent years from the Defense Ministry's offices to Malek Ashtar University in Tehran. From here, the Iranian official has continued to oversee a range of studies relevant in nuclear-weapons work, the agency said.The report appeared to contradict the U.S. government's most recent intelligence assessment on Iran's nuclear program from 2007, which concluded that Tehran suspended its weapons research in 2003. The assessment said Iran made this decision, in part, in response to the U.S. government's invasion of neighboring Iraq the same year.But the IAEA detailed a number of areas where Iran allegedly continued to conduct experimentation after 2003. One key area of continuing research is in the computer modeling of nuclear detonations, which is used in developing warheads. The IAEA said Tehran conducted research in 2008 and 2009 on developing the core of such a warhead, which would use highly enriched uranium.The IAEA report said Iran has produced enough fissile material for as many as four bombs, if it is enriched further to weapons grade.
The IAEA also said evidence it gathered indicates that Iran has continued research into triggering devices for nuclear bombs. The report said Tehran acknowledged to the agency in 2008 that it had developed such technology for civil and conventional military applications. But the IAEA said Iran has not explained…its own need for application for such detonators.U.S. officials declined to say if the IAEA's report would cause U.S. intelligence agencies to reassess their conclusions on Iran.The report hasn't concluded that [Iran] put in place the same structured program as before, said an administration official.It also doesn't say how advanced it is.The report also details what the IAEA believes has been expansive support for Iran's nuclear program from overseas scientists. Though the IAEA didn't name all of these alleged collaborators, diplomats briefed on the report said they include North Korea, the nuclear-smuggling network run by the Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and a senior Russian nuclear scientist.The report reaffirmed long-held beliefs that Mr. Khan sold centrifuges for uranium enrichment to Iran. But it also raised concerns that Tehran may have also obtained warhead designs from the Pakistani official.Officials briefed on the report also said the IAEA believes North Korea is the foreign government named in the report as assisting Tehran in conducting computer modeling of nuclear detonations.They said a former Russian nuclear scientist, Vyacheslav Danilenko, is the official cited in the report as making a string of visits to Tehran from 1996 through 2002 to help Iran develop a high-explosive initiation system, which can be used to trigger a nuclear device. The IAEA said they were told during consultations that this work was for non-nuclear applications.
The report's publication is expected to set off another round of deliberations among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council on what measures to take next on Iran. Diplomats at the IAEA said Russia and China had lobbied against making public the latest report for fear that it will make Tehran more recalcitrant in its dealings with the international community.The U.N. Security Council has passed four rounds of sanctions against Iran since 2006 that have significantly hampered Iran's ability to conduct business and access the international financial system. But few Iran experts believe the current measures will be enough to cause Iran's theocratic leadership to engage in serious negotiations with the U.S. on constraining its nuclear work.Iran has taken an increasingly aggressive posture in recent days in response to Israeli threats and in anticipation of the IAEA report. Senior officials in Iran's elite military unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, have said they will directly target U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan if they are attacked by Israel.They have also said they would deploy naval vessels in the Gulf of Mexico if the U.S. takes a more aggressive posture in the Persian Gulf.The American military should not forget that its generals are present in the region, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, senior Revolutionary Guards officer, told Iranian state media Tuesday.
