Rob Ford video scandal: Ford family faces fresh drug-related allegations in published report

Doug Ford said there is no truth to new allegations the Ford family has a history with drugs and he was involved in selling hashish.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, right, denies using crack cocaine during a press conference at City Hall.

There is no truth to new allegations the Ford family has a history with drugs and he himself was involved in selling hashish, Coun. Doug Ford said Saturday. He called the media “little sleaze bags” after an article in the Globe and Mail Saturday claimed he sold hash in Etobicoke during the 1980s.“You are little sleaze bags going after family. You’re nothing but a bunch of scums,” he told the CBC.“I think it’s pretty low, and a bunch of sleazy, sleazy journalism. It has gone to the bottom of the barrel … it makes me sick,” he told Global. The Globe and Mail published their story outlining the Ford family’s alleged history with drugs using 10 anonymous sources. These unnamed sources include two former hashish suppliers, three street-level drug dealers and a number of casual users of hash, according to the article. It alleges Mayor Rob Ford’s brother, Doug, sold hashish for several years in the 1980s in Etobicoke until age 22.The Star has not verified the allegations. The article comes a day after Rob Ford ended a weeklong silence by making a statement to media about a video in which he appears to smoke crack cocaine.“I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine,” Rob Ford said. Two Toronto Star reporters and an editor at Gawker have watched the video, which was being shopped around by some Toronto drug dealers for $100,000.When news of the video broke, the city became embroiled in the scandal.Doug Ford eventually made a statement to media, saying he believes his brother. Mark Towhey, Rob Ford’s now-ex chief of staff, was also fired. On Friday, a group of city councillors released a letter to the mayor urging him to speak out about the allegations.
The Globe’s article also claims his brother, Randy Ford, was once charged in relation to a drug-related kidnapping and that their sister, Kathy Ford, has been the victim of drug-related gun violence in the past.
The Star does not know the outcome of Randy Ford's charge.RELATED: Rob Ford’s sister’s ex-boyfriend charged with threatening death -The Globe and Mail also claims a number of their sources identified David Price, the mayor’s former high school football coach-turned official adviser, as a member of Doug Ford’s circle at the time.Globe reporters approached Rob and Doug Ford several times to speak to the allegations, but “Doug Ford rebuffed our entreaties, and aggressively threatened legal action,” wrote Globe Editor-in-Chief John Stackhouse in a letter to readers Saturday. There is nothing on the public record the Globe has accessed that shows Doug Ford has ever been charged for illegal drug possession or trafficking, according to the article.Several of the sources interviewed by the Globe said they saw the mayor around his brother as he was allegedly doing business but that he did not appear to be involved in any significant way.Editor John Stackhouse wrote in an editor's note: “We decided to publish their work this week, given the intense public interest around the Ford family and alleged substance abuse.”“After Rob Ford spoke to the media on Friday afternoon, carefully saying he does not use crack cocaine and is not addicted to crack cocaine, a group of senior editors met again, reviewed the story, and concluded again that it is in the public interest to publish.”

AFTER TODAY I THINK WE HAVE A WITCH HUNT GOIN FOR THE FORDS.THIS IS PROBABLY A POLITICAL STUNT BECAUSE THE TORONTO STAR NEVER GOT ITS WAY WITH CITY HALL IN TORONTO OVER ISSUES.BUT WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH ROB.WE KNOW DOUG IS INNOCENT FOR SURE.

The drug dealers who allegedly video taped TorontoMayor Rob Ford smoking crack have gone quiet, according to Gawker and The Toronto Star.Gawker’s John Cook, who has been running a crowdfunding campaign to raise $200,000 to pay for the alleged video, announced Thursday afternoon he has not been able to reach his sources since Sunday.Robyn Doolittle, one of the Toronto Star reporters who viewed the video, said she had also confirmed the video owners have gone silent.Gawker’s campaign has raised over $150,000 as of Thursday evening. If the total raised does not meet the $200,000 threshold by 11:59 p.m. Monday, no money is collected. If the funds raised do meet that goal but the video is not recovered, Gawker has promised to donate the funds.

The Man of Lawlessness: The Antichrist in the Tribulation-Saturday, May 25, 2013
Jan's first guest is prophecy scholar Dr. David Reagan. The two discuss the characteristics and heritage of the Antichrist and the False Prophet. Is the global religious system outlined in the Bible Rome and therefore related to Catholicism? The two remind listeners that the catastrophic calamities happening today are setting the stage for the Tribulation when all this mystery unfolds. Then Jan and producer Larry Kutzler talk to Tom Pritchard of the Minnesota Family Council. Gay marriage has passed in Minnesota. What does that mean for your state and the country? Twelve states have now acted on this. Find Dr David Reagan's book here. -

Royal Bank pledges not to outsource jobs for cash savings

Royal Bank pledges not to outsource jobs for cash savings
Royal Bank has promised it will never outsource a Canadian job to a foreign worker solely to save money.
The bank updated its code of conduct on Friday, after facing intense criticism last month for its hiring policies. In a story first reported by CBC News, the bank was criticized heavily for laying off a number of IT workers in order to replace them with cheaper foreign workers."As part of its supplier review, RBC looked at the types of work the bank will and will not outsource to suppliers that execute all or part of the work offshore to ensure suppliers support RBC's focus on creating Canadian jobs and prosperity," the bank said in a statement Friday.

'Superior skill sets'
Specifically, the bank says it will only offshore work to suppliers "when their investment in scale, technology or operational knowledge provides superior skill sets and capabilities that RBC cannot duplicate inside its own business or in Canada.""RBC will not offshore work where salary savings is the primary reason and will make every effort to source in Canada," the bank says. The bank notes that all of its call centres are located in Canada, despite the trend in many industries to offshore them. The bank faced harsh criticism for taking advantage of a government program known as the temporary foreign workers program, which is aimed at filling labour needs where suitably skilled Canadian workers can't be found for any given job.The bank says it has used the program "on a very limited basis for executives and for workers with highly specialized skills," but in the new code of conduct, the bank says it will not use what it called the "low skills workers" program to fill jobs in Canada. The B.C. Federation of Labour said it welcomed the bank's move."RBC has recognized that Canadians expect Canada's banks to provide good, family-supporting jobs in Canada," said federation president Jim Sinclair. The federation said that following the initial reports of the outsourcing, the province's labour movement threatened to withdraw more than $5 billion in union and pension funds on deposit with the bank. The federation also said it will continue discussion with the bank on the establishment of an independent monitor to review implementation of the new code of conduct.

DANIEL 9:26-27
26 And after threescore and two weeks(62X7=434 YEARS+7X7=49 YEARS=TOTAL OF 69 WEEKS OR 483 YRS) shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary;(ROMAN LEADERS DESTROYED THE 2ND TEMPLE) and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.(THERE HAS TO BE 70 WEEKS OR 490 YRS TO FUFILL THE VISION AND PROPHECY OF DAN 9:24).(THE NEXT VERSE IS THAT 7 YR WEEK OR (70TH FINAL WEEK).
27 And he ( THE ROMAN,EU PRESIDENT) shall confirm the covenant (PEACE TREATY) with many for one week:(1X7=7 YEARS) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,(3 1/2 yrs in TEMPLE SACRIFICES STOPPED) and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Aid groups urge EU to fulfil commitments to Palestinians

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - A group of 80 international aid agencies urged the European Union on Saturday to follow through on pledges it made last year to back Palestinian communities seen as vulnerable to Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. Not enough action has been taken since EU foreign ministers last May urged Israel to ease curbs to growth on Palestinian villages and criticized its settlement policies, the Association of International Development Agencies (AIDA) said in a report.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited the West Bank this week to try to revive peace talks for an Israeli-Palestinian two-state solution they say may become impossible with more settlement expansion.More than 600 settler houses have been built since last May while Israel demolished 535 Palestinian-owned homes and structures, including 30 built with EU funding, displacing 784 Palestinians, the AIDA report said.It said Israel had approved plans to build 1,967 new settler homes since last May, up four-fold from the year before."Israel is morally and legally responsible for the wellbeing of Palestinian men, women and children ... EU countries have an obligation to address violations of international law and collectively put pressure on Israel to end policies impeding Palestinian development," Tony Laurence of Medical Aid for Palestinians wrote. The findings focus on a contiguous tract making up around two-thirds of the West Bank dubbed "Area C". Interim 1993 peace accords put the area under full Israeli military and civil control. Palestinians got smaller, disparate patches to govern. The division was meant to be temporary and last only a few years pending a pact ending the conflict. That has not happened. Some 150,000 Palestinians, many of them poor farmers and shepherds, along with 325,000 Israeli settlers live in Area C.
IMPASSE OVER TERRITORY
Palestinians want all of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem - lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War - for a future independent state. Israel has agreed in principle to Palestinian statehood but wants to keep all of Jerusalem as its undivided capital along with blocs of West Bank settlements. Most world powers do not recognize Israeli sovereignty in East Jerusalem and deem the settlements illegal. The EU last year called for "halting forced transfer of population and demolition of Palestinian housing and infrastructure, simplifying administrative procedures to obtain building permits ... and addressing humanitarian needs".
Since then, AIDA said, Israel has rejected 94 percent of Palestinian requests to build in Area C. Israel has yet to approve 32 EU-funded "master plans" to develop Palestinian villages filed since 2009, holding up the projects, AIDA said.In April, Kerry pledged to unfurl within a week a U.S.-backed investment initiative to support Palestinians in Area C. The plan appears to be stalled due to Israeli objections.Israel has made clear it will not permit independent Palestinian economic development in Area C."It was very clear in the (1993 interim) Oslo Accords ... that Israel has control of the economy and security in Area C," Regional Cooperation Minister Silvan Shalom told Reuters."I am not going to open the Oslo Accords just for resuming the negotiations," he said in an interview on Tuesday. In a statement to Reuters, the EU mission in Jerusalem said the EU had driven international efforts to get Israel to meet commitments on Palestinian living conditions in Area C but any change hinged on Israeli "engagement on this issue".(Reporting by Noah Browning and Crispian Balmer; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

Van Rompuy endorses restart of EU-Turkey talks

24.05.13 @ 09:27
By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - European Council chief Herman Van Rompuy has repeated his invitation for Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to come to Brussels to mark the restart of EU entry talks.Speaking in Ankara on Thursday (23 May) - almost 50 years after the EU and Turkey signed a pre-accession pact in 1963 and more than two years after accession talks halted in 2010 - he said: "We should shortly see the opening of a new chapter in the negotiations."He added: "I am honoured that the Prime Minister has accepted my invitation to come to Brussels in the coming months in order to follow up on today's fruitful discussions."
Speaking earlier the same day at a business seminar in the Turkish capital, he noted: "After a moment of standstill … [there is] a new impetus that will soon be translated into a concrete step forward."Despite growing anti-immigration sentiment in several EU countries, he also endorsed visa free travel. He told the business event: "I trust that an early signature by Turkey of a so-called readmission agreement with the European Union would allow us to advance quickly through the roadmap leading to visa free travel for Turkish citizens."He added: "Progress can be swift. Visa free travel would give our relationship a new impetus."Turkey accession talks fizzled out in 2010 partly due to French and German hostility and partly due to a veto by Cyprus. But France and Germany in recent months said they want to restart the process.
Van Rompuy also noted that the discovery of gas in Cypriot maritime zones "could be an incentive" for Cyprus and Turkey to end the frozen conflict over Turkish-controlled north Cyprus."A settlement would open up the range of options for the exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the economically most advantageous way for the benefit of all Cypriots," he told the Turkish businessmen.Believers in Turkey's EU entry say it would increase the Union's influence in the Middle East and improve energy security by connecting Europe to the gas-rich Caspian Sea.But sceptics say Turkey has a way to go on human rights and that its poorer regions would suck in billions of EU cohesion money.Van Rompuy twice urged Erdogan to respect "freedom of expression."But he noted the Turkish economy would now be the fifth biggest in the Union in terms of total GDP - on par with the Netherlands, but ahead of Belgium, Poland and Sweden.
On the flip side, he assured Turkey the EU is not heading for economic meltdown."Let me underline my strong belief that the current stagnation is but momentary ... We will bounce back," he said."The existential threat to the eurozone has been defeated," he added. For his part, Erdogan has shunned the EU capital since 2009.He told Van Rompuy "that while Turkey is thinking about joining the European Union for its own benefit, it is also considering it for the gains it will bring to the EU … Turkey isn't going to be a burden."
He also noted: "There are currently more than 5 million Turks in the EU, there is already a Turkey [inside the European Union]."The two men's optimism is not shared by all, however.Popular support for EU membership in Turkey has fallen from a high of more than 70 percent in 2005 to 33 percent.Meanwhile, Nobel-prize-winning US economist Edmund Phelps earlier this week told news agency Bloomberg that Iceland is right to put its EU entry talks on hold."We’re still learning about the European experiment and to what extent it’s going to succeed," he said."I can't believe that anybody's serious about joining the EU right now … It’s like saying: 'It's a beautiful house - it happens to be on fire at the moment - we should buy it'," he added.

Assad Has Chemicals that Can Eradicate Entire Towns'

Assad has enough sarin to "eradicate the whole of Damascus," says a former scientist for the Syrian chemical weapons program.

President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has enough of the nerve agent sarin to "eradicate the whole of Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Aleppo," a former scientist for the Syrian chemical weapons program says.
Speaking to Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity after he fled Syria, the chemist said that the regime is not likely to unleash its chemical stockpiles unless it “no longer cares about the world knowing.""If the regime is to fire a Scud-B with a chemical warhead filled with sarin, the missile would create a chemical cloud in the atmosphere that is 3km long and 500m wide, which could be fatal to all people under it," the chemist told Al Jazeera. He claimed that the regime has only used sarin nerve gas in small quantities to halt rebel advances in four towns in the suburbs of Damascus, in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maksoud district, in Idlib's Saraqeb town and in Homs' al-Khalidiyeh district."The intention was to incapacitate rebels and force them out of strategic areas, while keeping the deaths among their ranks limited," the chemist said, who added that he was speaking out "to dispel the myths on chemical weapons in Syria."The Syrian government has managed to keep information about its chemical weapons largely beyond the reach of outsiders, and to keep its scientists under heavy surveillance, even keeping some under 24-hour guard. The exiled chemist told Al Jazeera that Syria’s stockpile comprises 700 tons of sarin agent, at least 3,000 aerial bombs that could be filled with chemical agents and more than 100 chemical warheads for Scud missiles.Consistent with other intelligence reports, the chemist said that Assad’s chemical weapons arsenal also contains mustard gas and what experts describe as the deadliest of all nerve agents, VX.Some Western intelligence agencies believe that Syria also has access to tabun nerve agent, but the chemist said these reports are untrue. The regime and rebels have accused each other of using chemical weapons on several occasions, and the issue has come to dominate recent debate about the two-year-long conflict. The U.S. and Britain say they have "credible evidence" that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, and Turkey said its hospitals treated patients exposed to chemical attack.
The chemist said he fled the country before December 23, 2012, when the first claims emerged about the regime’s use of chemical weapons in the neighborhood of Khaldiyeh, in the city of Homs. The neighborhood is strategic because it divides Sunnis and largely pro-government Alawites.A diluted mix of sarin and isopropyl alcohol was likely used in December 2012, according to the scientist, but he cast doubt on the claims of the regime and rebels that chemical weapons were used in Khan al-Assal in Aleppo on March 19.
"When medics report [a] very disgusting smell, the way they did in Khan al-Assal, it is obvious it’s not coming from chemical weapons," the chemist told Al Jazeera. "The fact that patients only suffered from suffocation and no other symptoms further confirms that it was not sarin."The chemist said what was likely fired was military-grade tear gas, used as a substitute for chemical agents. The chemist explained that during the two-year conflict, the regime has experimented with mixing different gases - like sarin and tear gas - in order to create a mélange of symptoms that would make the cause hard to identify."When opposition activists report different kinds of symptoms resulting from the different gases, it becomes hard to believe them. Some opposition fighters report a burning sensation in the eyes, raising the question as to whether this was tear gas or nerve gas," the chemist told Al Jazeera. The scientist said the regime had convinced him that the weapons he was working on were for self-defense against Israel."It was our dogma that we were creating the equivalent of Israel’s nuclear weapons," the chemist said. "Never were we told that the weapons could be used inside the country."(Arutz Sheva’s North American Desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. Exiled cleric who taught UK knifeman praises 'courage'

By Dominic Evans
TRIPOLI, Lebanon (Reuters) - A Syrian-born Islamist cleric who taught one of the men accused of hacking to death an off-duty British soldier on a London street praised the attack for its "courage" and said Muslims would see it as a strike on a military target. In an interview in Tripoli, northern Lebanon, where he has lived since being banished from Britain in 2005, Omar Bakri, founder of banned British Islamist group Al Muhajiroun, said he knew suspect Michael Adebolajo from his lectures a decade ago."When I saw the footage I recognized the face immediately," Bakri told Reuters. "I used to know him. A quiet man, very shy, asking lots of questions about Islam.""What surprised me (is) the quiet man, the man who is very shy, decided to carry out an attack against a British soldier in the middle of the day in the middle of a street in the UK. In east London. It's incredible."When I saw that, honestly I was very surprised - standing firm, courageous, brave. Not running away. Rather, he said why he carried (it out) and he wanted the whole world to hear it."The attack has been vociferously condemned by Muslim organizations across Britain.Adebolajo, 28, a British-born convert from a Christian Nigerian immigrant family, went by the nickname Mujahid - warrior - after taking up Islam as a teenager in a suburb on the northeast outskirts of London. He was filmed with his hands still covered with the blood of Afghan war veteran Lee Rigby, 25, after the attack. Clutching a butcher's knife and meat cleaver, he said the killing was revenge for British participation in wars in foreign countries. He and a second knife-wielding attacker, Nigerian-born naturalized British citizen Michael Adebowale, 22, are in hospital after being shot by police during their arrest. They have yet to be charged. Police have also arrested another man and a woman under suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
"WE DON'T SLEEP ON OUR GRIEVANCES"
The interview with Bakri in his flat in the Abu Samra district of Tripoli was twice interrupted by his infant son Osama, who broke into the room playing with a plastic toy. The boy was named after slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden."He is supposed to go fight (U.S. President Barack) Obama in the future, and maybe to deal with the Obama of his times. We called him after... Sheikh Osama," Bakri said, smiling often as he spoke but lacing light-hearted comments with hints of menace. After a photographer took his picture, the bearded Bakri, wearing a black cloak over white trousers and white leather shoes, mockingly adopted a threatening pose."We know the media, they just want evil pictures," he said. "But we are going to be in power soon... Don't think that we sleep on our grievances. That Michael, after 10 years, he killed (the soldier) in front of everyone ... Was he a man or not?" "The prophet (Mohammad) said an infidel and his killer will not meet in Hell. That's a beautiful saying," he said. "May God reward (Adebolajo) for his actions."
Bakri said British authorities were inviting retaliation by targeting Muslims with anti-terrorist legislation and police raids."If you breach the covenant of security with Muslims you are digging your grave," he said. "I cannot condemn what Michael did. I don't see it as a crime as far as Islam is concerned".He said radical Islam was winning the bulk of converts in Britain and scoffed at the "moderate chocolate" Muslims who he said are "always melting the way the West wants them to be - they never stand for what they believe".
"They are just a waste of space".Bakri said his organization Al Muhajiroun had nothing to do with the attack because members had not seen Adebolajo since 2005. However, Anjem Choudary, who took over the leadership of Al Muhajiroun when Bakri was exiled from Britain, has told Reuters Adebolajo attended the group's events until about two years ago."Maybe Michael, in the eyes of many people in Britain, Muslim and non-Muslim, they don't condone what he did. They condemn it. But in the eyes of Muslims around the world they don't see him the same way. The Muslims in this country, they are so happy, proud of him. They see him as a freedom fighter attacking a military target."Bakri said he had been living in Lebanon since 2005, under an agreement by which Lebanon prevents him from leaving the country for 30 years. But he said he was in daily contact with students in Britain.(Editing by Peter Graff)

Hezbollah, Syrian government forces push for advance in Qusair

By Erika Solomon
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian government forces and the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah launched a fierce campaign to seize more rebel territory in the border town of Qusair on Saturday, sources on both sides of the conflict said.Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad said additional tanks and artillery had been deployed around opposition-held territory in Qusair, a Syrian town close to the Lebanese border.
"I've never seen a day like this since the battle started," said Malek Ammar, an activist speaking from the town by Skype. "The shelling is so violent and heavy. It's like they're trying to destroy the city house by house."More than 22 people in opposition-held areas were killed by Saturday afternoon, most of them rebels, and dozens were injured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Rebels are largely surrounded in Qusair, a town of 30,000 that has become a strategic battleground. Assad's forces want to take the area to secure a route between the capital Damascus and his stronghold on the Mediterranean coast, effectively dividing rebel-held territories in the north and south. The opposition has been fighting back, seeing it as critical to maintain cross-border supply routes and stop Assad from gaining a victory they fear may give him the upper hand in proposed U.S.-Russia led peace talks next month.Syria's two-year uprising against four decades of Assad family rule began as peaceful protests but devolved into an armed conflict that has killed more than 80,000 people.Assad's forces are believed to have seized about two-thirds of Qusair, but the price has been high and rebels insist they are preventing any further advances. An official close to Hezbollah told Reuters that the fighters' advances in Qusair were happening at a very slow pace."We are in the second phase of our plan of attack but the advance has been quite slow and difficult. The rebels have mined everything, the streets, the houses. Even the refrigerators are mined."Assad and Hezbollah forces have also been working to capture territory in areas surrounding Qusair. Manar TV, Hezbollah's media wing, said the Syrian army recaptured the Dabaa airport near the town, which rebels had seized several weeks ago.
SECTARIAN FIGHTING THREATENS REGION
The fighting in Qusair has also highlighted the increasingly sectarian tone of Syria's political struggle, which is not only overshadowing the revolt but threatening to destabilize the region. Israel has launched two air strikes in Syria, and Lebanon, which fought its own sectarian-fuelled 15-year civil war, has seen a rise in Syria-linked violence.Syria's Sunni Muslim majority has led the struggle to topple Assad, and has been joined by Islamist fighters across the region, some of them linked to the militant group al Qaeda.Assad comes from the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and has relied on an army led mostly by Alawite forces. He has been bankrolled by regional Shi'ite power Iran, a longtime ally, and now increasingly by the country's Lebanese proxy, Shi'ite Hezbollah, founded as a resistance movement to Israel.Syrian rebels now say that whatever the outcome, they will plot sectarian revenge attacks on Shi'ite and Alawite villages on either side of the border. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory, which has a network of activists across Syria, said Assad forces led by Hezbollah were trying to advance from three directions in the city."Every area they didn't have a foothold in, they are trying to gain one now," Rami Abdelraham, head of the Observatory, told Reuters by telephone.Rebels from across Syria say they have sent some of their units into Qusair.Colonel Abdeljabbar al-Okaidi, the Aleppo-based regional leader of a moderate, internationally-backed Supreme Military Council said he and the Islamist brigade al-Tawheed had sent forces to the outskirts of the town to help the Qusair fighters. But activist Malek Ammar said no forces had arrived yet and insisted the rebels locked in Qusair were still on their own."No one is helping Qusair other than its own men," he said.

MACLEANS ON HEAVEN AND HELL

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

REVELATION 21:1-27 (1000 YRS OVER, NEW REFURBISHED EARTH FOREVER WITH JESUS RULING)(FROM JERUSALEM)
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8 But the fearful,(COWARDS) and unbelieving,(FALSE PRETENDERS) and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
16 And the city (NEW JERUSALEM) lieth foursquare,(1,500 MILE-WIDE-HIGH) and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs.(1,500 MILES) The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits,(1,500 MILES) according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

REVELATION 22:1-21 (ETERNITY FOREVER WITH JESUS)(ON EARTH)
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I (JESUS) am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers,(DRUG ADDICTS-PUSHERS) and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book,(REVELATION) If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy,(BOOK OF REVELATION) God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

HELL AND ETERNAL PUNISHMENT IS REAL TO.

REVELATION 20:10-15
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Why so many people–including scientists–suddenly believe in an afterlife

Heaven is hot again, and hell is colder than ever
by Brian Bethune on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 8:39am - 145 Comments
Death, it seems, is no longer Shakespeare’s undiscovered country, the one “from whose bourn no traveller returns.” Not according to contemporary bestseller lists. Dreams and visions of the afterlife have been constants across human history, and the near-death experiences (now known as NDEs) of those whose lives were saved by medical advances have established, for millions, a credible means by which someone could peek into the next world. Lately a fair-sized pack of witnesses claim to have actually entered into the afterlife before coming back again to write mega-selling accounts of what they saw and felt there. Afterlife speculation has become a vibrant part of the zeitgeist, the result of trends that include developments in neuroscience that have inspired new ideas about human consciousness, the ongoing evolution of theology, both popular and expert, and the hopes and fears of an aging population. Heaven is hot again. And hell is colder than ever.Recent polls across the developed world are starting to tell an intriguing tale. In the U.S., religion central for the West, belief in heaven has held steady, even ticking upwards on occasion, over the past two decades. Belief in hell is also high, but even Americans show a gap between the two articles of faith—81 per cent believed in the former in 2011, as opposed to 71 per cent accepting the latter. Elsewhere in the Western world the gap between heaven and hell believers is more of a gulf—a 2010 Canadian poll found more than half of us think there is a heaven, while fewer than a third acknowledge hell. What’s more, monotheism’s two destinations are no longer all that are on offer. In December a survey of the 1970 British Cohort group—9,000 people, currently 42 years old—found half believed in an afterlife, while only 31 per cent believed in God. No one has yet delved deeply into beliefs about the new afterlife—the cohort surveyors didn’t ask for details—but reincarnation, in an newly multicultural West, is one suggested factor. So too is belief in what one academic called “an unreligious afterlife,” the natural continuation of human consciousness after physical death.

While most of the current bestselling accounts of afterlife experiences are recognizably Christian—at least in outline—signs of changing beliefs can be found in them too. Nor are the new travellers—who include a four-year-old boy and a middle-aged neurosurgeon—what religious skeptics would think of as the usual suspects. Colton Burpo, now 13, “died” 10 years ago from a ruptured appendix, and spent three minutes of earthly time in heaven—some of it in Jesus’s lap, some of it speaking with a miscarried sister whose existence he had never been told about—before being pulled back to Earth by his surgical team. Since 2010, when his father, Todd, a Nebraska minister, published his account of what Colton told him, Heaven is for Real has sold more than 7.5 million copies. If Colton’s story sounds like a contemporary take on an ancient Christian motif—“unless you become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3)—the same can’t be said about Eben Alexander’s post-religious cosmic experience. It is Alexander’s provocatively named Proof of Heaven, released in November, that wrenched afterlife visitation literature out of its below-the-radar religious publishing niche and into the spotlight. Alexander’s professional stature—as a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon, a man expected to know what is possible and what is not for human consciousness—ensured him of extensive media coverage, including on Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul Sunday, massive sales (it remains No. 1 on the New York Times paperback non-fiction bestseller list), and often venomous responses from fellow scientists.Alexander woke one day in 2008 with an intense headache. “Within hours, my entire cortex—the part of the brain that controls thought and emotion and that in essence makes us human—had shut down,” he writes. Doctors finally determined that “E. coli bacteria had penetrated my cerebrospinal fluid and were eating my brain.” For seven days he was in a deep coma, during which time, often guided by a beautiful girl riding a giant butterfly, he flew around the “invisible, spiritual side of existence.” And there he encountered God, whom Alexander frequently refers to as Om, the sound he recalls as “being associated with that omniscient, omnipotent and unconditionally loving God.”He eventually recovered, a medical miracle in itself, Alexander writes. But he was an entirely different man, no longer a neuroscientist like other neuroscientists. “I know that many of my peers hold—as I myself did—to the theory that the brain, and in particular the cortex, generates consciousness and that we live in a universe devoid of any kind of emotion, much less the unconditional love that I now know God and the universe have toward us. But that belief, that theory, now lies broken at our feet. What happened to me destroyed it.”Not according to most of his fellow neuroscientists, whose reactions made the predictable Christian  wariness—no angels, no Jesus, and a God named Om left Toronto pastor Tim Challies to sum up Proof of Heaven as “more New Age-y than the rest, close to non-Western religion”—seem welcoming. Oliver Sacks called Alexander’s claims “not just unscientific but anti-scientific.” Others opposed dogma with dogma: Alexander was correct that by current neurological understanding what happened to him was impossible if his cortex was shut down—therefore, they said, it wasn’t shut down, no matter what his medical records say. Many skeptics referenced British psychologist Susan Blackmore’s 1993 book, Dying to Live, which dismisses NDEs as a result of chemical changes associated with dying brains, as the last word.
For their part, non-materialist neuroscientists, like University of Montreal professor Mario Beauregard, have long critiqued Blackmore and point out that brain research was in its infancy 20 years ago. Blackmore argued that a lack of oxygen (or anoxia) during the dying process might induce abnormal firing of neurons in the part of the brain that controls vision, leading to the illusion of seeing a bright light at the end of a dark tunnel.Beauregard cites objections by Dutch cardiologist Pim Van Lommel that if anoxia (lack of oxygen) was central to NDEs, far more cardiac arrest patients would report such an experience. What’s more, as pointed out by Dr. Sam Parnia, whose resuscitation techniques have doubled his New York hospital’s cardiac-arrest-recovery rate, some NDE patients were not terminal during their experiences, meaning their oxygen levels were normal. In fact, Parnia notes, dropping oxygen levels are associated with “acute confusional state,” something at odds with the lucid consciousness reported by NDE people.

Two decades of research and medical advances have moved near-death experiences from rare events to common occurrences. In his book Erasing Death, Parnia cites a 30-year-old Japanese woman as the current record holder (in terms of time) for someone who was found dead and restored to life. She “may have been dead up to 10 hours,” Parnia says, but after six hours’ work, doctors got her heart started and brought her back to health: “she had a baby in the last year.” Now that patients who have been clinically dead for hours can be brought back to life, says Parnia, the question of the continuation of human consciousness is a live scientific issue. And it’s not only the remarkable extension of the time patients can now spend suspended between life and death, but the sheer number of individuals involved, that has made NDEs so contentious among researchers. Those whose NDEs also involved an out-of-body experience raise the stakes further.Materialist skeptics are not troubled by accounts of tunnels of light or angelic beings. Perhaps the dying brain hypothesis doesn’t fully explain them, but there are other possibilities. Too much carbon dioxide in the blood perhaps or, as a recent study from the University of Kentucky posits, NDEs are really an instance of a sleep disorder, rapid eye movement (REM) intrusion. In that disorder, a person’s mind can wake up before his body, and both hallucinations and the sensation of being physically detached from the body can occur. Cardiac arrest could trigger a REM intrusion in the brain stem—the region that controls the most basic functions of the body and which can operate independently from the (now dead) higher brain. The resulting NDE would actually be a dream. But that hypothesis still cannot account for people who report seeing, during their out-of-body experiences, what they could not have. Most commonly that’s an overhead view of their frantic medical teams. Parnia reports a 2001 case, in which a Dutch patient’s dentures were removed during cardiac arrest. When his nurses couldn’t find the dentures later, the patient was able to remind them where they were. Perhaps the most famous corroborated case, cited by Beauregard, is that of a migrant worker named Maria, whose story was documented by her critical care social worker, Kimberly Clark. The day after she had been resuscitated after cardiac arrest, Maria told Clark how she had been able to look down from the ceiling and left the OR. She found herself outside the hospital and spotted a tennis shoe on the ledge of the north side of the building’s third floor. She described it in detail. Maria, not surprisingly, wanted to know whether she had “really” seen the shoe, and asked Clark to go look.Quite skeptical, Clark went where Maria sent her, and found the tennis shoe, just as she’d described it. “The only way she could have had such a perspective,” said Clark, “was if she had been floating right outside and at very close range to the tennis shoe.” It shouldn’t have been possible, as both Beauregard and Parnia point out. “The question becomes,” Parnia says, “how can people have conscious awareness when they’ve gone beyond the threshold of death?”The answer to that question is not necessarily Christian, or even metaphysical at all, not for Parnia, who describes himself as “not a religious person” and not for many of his fellow NDE researchers. In a similar vein, many traditional Christians are more than a little wary of the reported experiences of the heaven travellers. For them the idea—so intolerable to materialist skeptics—that consciousness, or the soul, can and does exist outside the body is an article of faith. But some of the new afterlife, however seemingly Christian in outline, is often troubling, especially in its utter lack of judgment. All are welcome, all are heaven-bound in those accounts: there is no sign of God’s wrath for sinners. The division over the possibility of continuing human consciousness is not entirely between the religious and the secular. And the extraordinary popularity of heaven tourism—books have continued to pour down the publishing pike this year, including I Believe in Heaven by Cecil Murphy, one of the pioneers in the genre—is not entirely driven by evangelical enthusiasm.

In that regard, the storm stirred up by Proof of Heaven only obscures the wider significance of the afterlife books. The controversy over the scientific basis of Alexander’s experiences, like the skeptical poking for holes in the Burpo story—can Colton’s parents really be sure he never heard a word about his mother’s miscarriage?—can miss the cultural forest for the factual trees.Consider the many other near-death survivors-cum-authors and their places along the continuum, from pastor’s son to neurosurgeon. There’s Mary Neal, an orthopaedic surgeon whose account of the aftermath of her drowning in Chile in 1999, To Heaven and Back, has spent two years on bestseller lists; teacher Crystal McVea, whose Waking Up in Heaven tells the story of the nine minutes that followed after she stopped breathing in 2009; The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven is about six-year-old Alex Malarkey, who met Jesus after an car accident in 2004; and Texas pastor Don Piper, whose 2004 account (co-written with Cecil Murphy) of his car crash, 90 Minutes in Heaven, is often credited with kick-starting the phenomenon. There are elements, from key plot points to tiny details, that link their stories, starting with two obvious points. The idea that major scientists no longer dismiss the idea of continuing consciousness colours all accounts, as does the fact that, whether truth or fantasy, the experiences are necessarily culturally specific. All overwhelming and bewildering mental states have to be sorted, defined and made comprehensible in the light of the familiar—what else do our brains have to work with? One way or another, a pastor’s child and a fallen-away Christian like Alexander will filter an NDE through the earliest Sunday school tracks laid down in their memories. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, first famous for her five stages of grief, later became a doyenne of NDEs—her lectures on her NDE patients (who turned her into a believer), first published in 1991, were reissued in 2008 to catch the current publishing wave. Even in her rather homogenous western European clientele, Kübler-Ross could see the effects of early enculturation: “I never encountered a Protestant child who saw the Virgin Mary in his last minutes, yet she was perceived by many Catholic children.”Many of the writers share a common gaping wound, centred on lost children, a wound usually healed by simultaneously finding the child and realizing there is no blame or judgment to suffer, no forgiveness to offer or seek. Most of Colton Burpo’s account is a child’s-eye account of orthodox teaching, but its most affecting passage is when he lifts years of guilt and anxiety off his mother, Sonja, by telling her that her miscarried child had been a girl, and that she was now flourishing in heaven as God’s adopted daughter. One of Kübler-Ross’s patients, a 12-year-old girl, told her father how she was comforted during her NDE by her brother. Except that she didn’t have a brother. Her tearful father then told her about the son who had died three months before her birth.Eben Alexander, who—unlike most NDE cases—lost all sense of personal identity during his experience, was troubled because that loss meant no relative offered him assurances of love and acceptance. Afterwards though, Alexander—an adopted child who had felt abandoned his whole life—saw a picture of his deceased natural sister, whom he had never met in life. She was the girl on the butterfly. (There is more than a trace of Kübler-Ross’s influence in Proof of Heaven. The butterfly girl stands out as one of the more psychedelic elements in an account mostly abstract and metaphysical: Kübler-Ross, however, constantly describes the human body as a cocoon, from which a metaphorical butterfly of spirit will eventually emerge.)

And the stories offer similar proofs: Colton, like Kübler-Ross’s patient, inexplicably knew of a lost sibling, whose existences their parents believed they had kept hidden, while Eben Alexander could describe precisely what his medical team and his family were doing during his seven-day coma. They are all, even the children, witnesses who experienced what they did—and came back, reluctantly—for a reason. Mary Neal was sent back with what she called “a laundry list of tasks to do,” which she still doesn’t talk about, at least not until they are accomplished: one was to help the rest of her family cope with the foretold death of her young son, which occurred 10 years later in 2009. Colton and Alex provide truth “out of the mouths of babes.” Alexander knows he is uniquely positioned among NDE subjects to challenge the materialist orthodoxies of mainstream neuroscience. Those similarities in form pale beside the deep thematic link between the new bestsellers: the (previously) undiscovered country is a place of unconditional love. Several of the writers pause, sometimes for pages, to stress the adjective as much as the noun. None express the message more clearly than Alexander, who writes that “the only thing that truly matters” was communicated to him in three parts. He boils those down to one word—love—but the key phrase may be the third sentence of his longer version:
You are loved and cherished.
You have nothing to fear.
There is nothing you can do wrong.
That’s fodder for cynics and skeptics, of course. That an individual like any of the authors, someone of broadly Christian background coping with emotional pain, should undergo such a heaven-centred experience when in the throes of physical trauma, is broadly predictable and easy to dismiss as wish-fulfillment. The fact it has happened to a group of such similar individuals does not in itself prove the truth (or the falsity) of the experiences; what that does, though, is illuminate a culture that increasingly rejects the very notion of judgment while equating salvation with personal healing. Most observers trace the current upsurge to Don Piper’s 90 Minutes in Heaven. Largely ignored by the non-religious world and looked at askance by many Christian commentators, 90 Minutes sold like hotcakes. And while it set the template for what was to come, what stands out about it today is its modesty. Piper was declared dead at the scene of an auto crash on Jan. 18, 1989. His body was left in place while the authorities waited for the tools needed to extract him from the wreckage. An hour and a half later, though, Piper stirred back to life, albeit to a long and excruciating recovery, involving 34 painful surgeries. And to bear witness to where he had been in that 90 minutes. In the transcendent light, actually, just outside the “pearlescent” gates of heaven, surrounded by “perfect love” and the gathering presence—simultaneously physical and spiritual—of loved ones who had died during Piper’s lifetime. There were friends who had passed away young and were thus still youthful looking; his grandfather, instantly recognizable by his shock of white hair; and his great-grandmother, still aged but now no longer with false teeth, but her own restored, no longer stooped and no longer wrinkled. Signs of age, in other words, and of the gravitas they confer, but no traces of the “ravages of living.”All this—the approach to the pearly gates, the welcome from loved ones, the presence of unconditional love and the absence of judgment—was pregnant with accounts to come. But, as it turned out, 90 Minutes’ first-born—the genetic relationship obvious in their titles, not to mention the way Amazon bundled them together for a special low price—was the most striking outlier in recent afterlife literature, Bill Wiese’s 23 Minutes in Hell. A California realtor, Wiese was sleeping peacefully on the night of Nov. 22, 1998, when God pitched him into hell at 3 a.m., so that—Wiese later decided—he could warn others of their peril. He landed abruptly in a five-by-three-metre cell, shared with two gigantic, evil, reptilian beasts who proceeded to smash him against the walls before shredding his flesh.Yet Wiese did not die, could not die, as much as he wanted to. He continued in seemingly endless pain, tormented too by “the terrible, foul stench.” (Smell—the most evocative of senses, the one most closely tied to deep memory—is prominent in accounts of heaven as well, where it brings visitors the most comforting reminders of childhood and, when the odours arise from food, assurances of plenty.) At precisely 3:23 a.m., Jesus rescued Wiese and returned him home, where he landed, terrified, on his living room floor. The book, published in 2006, spawned no serious imitators. In part that was due to its lack of the scientific gloss the heaven narratives bear (and the times demand)—one Christian nurse, posting on Amazon, rejected 23 Minutes because of her familiarity with NDEs. There is no explanatory traffic accident, cardiac arrest or brain-eating bacteria, nothing to indicate a hovering between life and death when the sufferer could peek through the curtain, nothing that didn’t point to a (very) bad dream. But Wiese’s book also went nowhere because hell no longer possesses the power it once held in Christianity. That’s particularly remarkable within an American religious milieu that was always attentive to warnings of hellfire. In 1741 Jonathan Edwards delivered what is often called the most famous sermon in American history, “Sinners in the hands of an angry God.” It is beautifully composed, rigorously logical (in terms of Calvinist theology) and frankly terrifying: “Men are held in the hand of God over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it; and God is dreadfully provoked.” Edwards was interrupted often during the sermon by congregants moaning and crying out, “What shall I do to be saved?” It’s doubtful he’d receive the same reaction today. Many modern Christians struggle to reconcile a loving God with one who would condemn the majority of humankind to eternal torment.

Within Roman Catholicism, notes Smith College world religion professor Carol Zaleski, the last three pontiffs, including Pope Francis, have all been supportive of the late Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, who taught that Catholics have a duty to hope and pray for an empty hell, for the salvation of all. Even those Protestant traditions that have historically been more attuned to the gulf between the elect and the damned have seen vigorous theological debate about the afterlife, and the defence of ideas that effectively weaken the severity of divine wrath. Conditional immortality, for one, says true eternal life is reserved for the saved; souls in hell will eventually—and, in this context, mercifully—be annihilated.“Most people are no longer afraid of being seized at an unguarded moment,” judged wanting and flung into the fiery pit like Edwards’s congregants were, says Zaleski. “We are now more creatures of anxiety than of guilt.” The anxiety, as well as the interest, is surely tied to the greying of the Western world too, as our thoughts, conscious or not, increasingly turn to what’s next, whether we think that’s oblivion or some kind of afterlife. Baby boomers, by sheer force of numbers, have always driven cultural trends, from the lowering of voting and drinking ages in their youth to the politically untouchable status of retirement benefits today. It’s hardly surprising to see them favour not just the existence but the congenial nature of an afterlife. And that is where the heaven tourists finally mesh, not just with each other, but with the larger culture. We seem to be moving inexorably from a society where organized religion dominates issues of morality—and mortality—but not to the secular promised land of reason. Rather, we are orienting ourselves to a more personal spirituality, at once vague and autonomous. Ordinary sinners increasingly don’t believe that they deserve judgment, let alone hell. Theists and atheists alike dispute any earthly authority’s right to judge, and both feel NDEs give them reason to hope for something beyond the grave. And many believers confidently expect that God isn’t judgmental either.

ROB FORD-NO ANSWERS TO DRUG ALLIGATIONS YET

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

I WONDER WHY ROB FORD WON'T ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DRUG ALLIGATIONS.I SMELL GUILT ON THIS ONE.IF I WAS ACCUSED OF A SERIOUS ALLIGATION LIKE THIS I WOULD BE SPEAKING OUT QUICK FOR MY INNOCENCE.

ITS MAY 24,13 AND ROB FORD CAME OUT WITH A STATEMENT TODAY HERE IT IS.

TORONTO – Here is the full text of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s statement Friday afternoon in which he denied he uses crack cocaine. Ford also addressed the players of the football team at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School, where he was dropped Thursday as coach.Well, good afternoon everyone. I’d like to take this opportunity to address a number of issues that have circulated in the media over the last few days. There has been a serious accusation from the Toronto Star that I use crack cocaine. I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine. As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have never seen or does not exist. It is most unfortunate, very unfortunate, that my colleagues and the great people of this city have been exposed to the fact that I have been judged by the media without any evidence. This past week has not been an easy one. It has taken a great toll on my family and my friends and the great people of Toronto. For the past week, on the advice of my solicitor, I was advised not to say a word. I want to thank the people of this great city for their outpouring of support. The past few days have also ended a long relationship with Don Bosco. I would like to thank and congratulate all the young men that I’ve had the opportunity to coach and improve their lives in the last 10 years at Don Bosco. I will continue to support Don Bosco in spirit and I wish them great success for their upcoming season. These kids are phenomenal kids who have bright futures and can do anything if they put their mind to it.I would like to assure everyone that we are continuing to fight for the taxpayers every day and it’s business as usual at city hall. This administration is turning the corner and I will continue to do what the great people of the city elected me to do and that was to keep taxes low, to improve customer service, and to reduce the size and cost of government and invest in our infrastructure.I would also like to thank my former chief of staff Mark Towhey for his service and all the work that he has done. Again, I’d like to repeat: I can’t thank the people enough of Toronto for their support and being there and calling me and emailing me every single minute of this day. I would also like to thank you for being here today but most importantly folks, we have, I have, the city has the best deputy mayor in Doug Holyday that anyone could ever ask for. I want to thank Doug for being here and I want to thank my best friend, and I love him dearly, my brother Doug, for having to go through this nonsense. Thank you very much.

Train crash" at City Hall as Rob Ford ousts chief of staff
Mark Towhey dismissed as mayor continues to avoid questions about cocaine allegations

Mark Towhey, far left, with Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday and Mayor Rob Ford on Friday, May 17.
The atmosphere of crisis surrounding City Hall intensified on Thursday, when Rob Ford abruptly fired his chief of staff.
Mark Towhey was escorted out of Mayor Ford’s office by security early in the afternoon following a brief meeting with the mayor and city manager Joe Pennachetti. On his way out, Towhey — who was promoted to the top job in the mayor’s office in August — told reporters that the move was not a surprise and confirmed that it wasn’t his choice.“I’m no longer the chief of staff, I did not resign,” he said.In a statement released shortly after Towhey left the building, the mayor’s office said, “Mr. Towhey has been a intricate [sic] part of the Mayor's Office and has made many valuable contributions. The Mayor thanks Mr. Towhey for his valuable service and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”Deputy chief of staff Earl Provost will take over the position until further notice.By many accounts, the mayor’s office was already understaffed, and Councillor Jaye Robinson says losing Towhey couldn’t have come at a worse time. Ford’s administration increasingly appears in freefall as the mayor continues to avoid media and refuses to answer questions about allegations, made public one week ago, that he smoked crack cocaine.“Right now I would say it’s a train crash,” Robinson said. “That’s the only way to describe it. It’s just one thing after the next. It’s not even daily anymore, it’s hourly. It’s becoming very disruptive.”Robinson said that Ford’s staff notified her Towhey was on his way out shortly before he was dismissed. Despite the ongoing crack controversy, Robinson says the firing had nothing to do with the drug accusations.“I don't have all the details, but my understanding is it's something related to football,” Robinson said. She wouldn’t elaborate, but on Wednesday the Toronto Catholic District School Board ousted Ford from his volunteer coaching position with the Don Bosco Eagles high school team.As the cocaine controversy continues to swirl, Robinson said that she and other members of the mayor’s executive committee have begun strategizing ways to bring the crisis to a conclusion. She said she expected Ford to try to bring some clarity to the affair by addressing the media this week, but any hope of that faded Wednesday when his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, held a press conference instead. “Knowing the mayor, I would anticipate that we won’t see him speak on this issue,” Robinson said.“But as of last night, we are starting to have conversations, as executive members, about how we ensure the city’s business is being achieved.”But there appears to be little that even members of his cabinet-like executive can do to force Ford’s hand. Robinson “went through a number of scenarios” with the city clerk on Wednesday and was told that councillors can take no formal action to compel the mayor to speak out or, if the allegations are true, to resign.“It’s very clear, that nothing can happen. Council has no authority, executive has no authority,” Robinson said. “The only person who can determine if the mayor resigns is the mayor himself.”
In theory, councillors could resign from the executive in protest, but according to council procedure that would mean vacating their roles as chairs of city committees as well. That’s something that most people on the 12-member committee appear reluctant to do.“I was elected as the chair of the government management committee,” said Councillor Paul Ainslie, an executive member who has steadily drifted away from Ford in recent months. “I’m going to continue to do that work. I’m going to continue to work hard to make the government open and transparent.”“I don’t see how resigning would have any impact on the mayor,” said Councillor Peter Milczyn, another exec member, who also chairs the planning committee. “I suppose if everybody resigned en masse that sends a signal, but then that also leads a void as to running the business of the city.”Milczyn said that as the cocaine accusations remain unaddressed, the mood at City Hall has become “sombre,” with council members not only concerned about official affairs abut also worried for the mayor’s wellbeing.“Genuinely for him as a person, for a father of two young kids, I’m concerned about him and his family,” the Etobicoke-Lakeshore councillor said. “He has two young children that should always be first and foremost in his mind.”Towhey, a gruff but trusted aide who worked on Ford’s campaign, is only the latest senior staffer to leave the mayor’s office since 2010. Ford’s former press secretary, Adrienne Batra, quit in November of 2011, and Towhey’s predecessor, Amir Remtulla, left his post in July of 2012. Before that Nick Kouvalis, also chief of staff, resigned in February 2011.At roughly 4:30 p.m. Thursday Mayor Ford left his office through a side door while media were distracted by his brother, who briefly spoke to media before retreating into a secure area of City Hall.• May 23, 2013 at 04:17 PM

Kerry: Israel, Palestinians must take hard decisions

"I know this region well enough to know there is scepticism, in some quarters there is cynicism, and there are reasons for it"

US Secretary of State John Kerry urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Friday to take "hard decisions" to revive the Middle East peace process, which has stalled for almost three years."We're getting toward a time now when hard decisions need to be made," he told a news conference in Tel Aviv at the end of his fourth visit to theregion since he took office in February.Kerry has been pressing Israel and the Palestinians to resume peace talks that broke down in September 2010.He said there was "one way" to make peace a reality, "and that is through direct negotiations."Ultimately it is the Israeli and Palestinian people who both decide the outcome... and who will get the greatest benefits" from a resumption of talks, he said."I know this region well enough to know there is scepticism, in some quarters there is cynicism, and there are reasons for it. There have been bitter years of disappointment," he said.   But he insisted: "It is our hope that by being methodical, careful, patient, but detailed and tenacious, that we can lay on a path ahead that can
conceivably surprise people and certainly exhaust the possibilities for peace."   And in a powerful message to Palestinians, who are used to just seeingAmerican motorcades sweep by into Abbas's high-walled headquarters compound, Kerry went for a stroll along a Ramallah street. Despite public pronouncements of support, there is growing frustration that there has been little sign of a shift in the long-held positions of the two sides.  Complicating efforts is the new Israeli government, which has moved more towards the right and includes some ministers who oppose a two-state solution.Kerry also warned on Friday that there was a time limit on the possibility of peace, after Thursday comments from British Foreign Secretary William Hague -- also on a visit to the region -- that the prospects of a two-state solution "cannot be kept alive forever."
"It is clear that in the long run the status quo is not sustainable," Kerry said.    The secretary of state also touched on the sensitive issue of Jewish settlement building in the Palestinian territories, one of the principal issues over which the 2010 talks stalled.   "The US position on settlements is clear and has not changed... we believe they should stop," he said.

Submerged structure stumps Israeli archaeologists

TIBERIAS, Israel (AP) — The massive circular structure appears to be an archaeologists dream: a recently discovered antiquity that could reveal secrets of ancient life in the Middle East and is just waiting to be excavated. It's thousands of years old — a conical, manmade behemoth weighing hundreds of tons, practically begging to be explored. The problem is — it's at the bottom of the biblical Sea of Galilee. For now, at least, Israeli researchers are left stranded on dry land, wondering what finds lurk below. The monumental structure, made of boulders and stones with a diameter of 70 meters (230 feet), emerged from a routine sonar scan in 2003. Now archaeologists are trying to raise money to allow them access to the submerged stones."It's very enigmatic, it's very interesting, but the bottom line is we don't know when it's from, we don't know what it's connected to, we don't know its function," said Dani Nadel, an archaeologist at the University of Haifa who is one of several researchers studying the discovery. "We only know it is there, it is huge and it is unusual."Archaeologists said the only way they can properly assess the structure is through an underwater excavation, a painstakingly slow process that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And if an excavation were to take place, archaeologists said they believed it would be the first in the Sea of Galilee, an ancient lake that boasts historical remnants spanning thousands of years and is the setting of many Bible scenes. In contrast, Israeli researchers have carried out many excavations in the Mediterranean and Red Seas.Much of the researchers' limited knowledge about this structure comes from the sonar scan a decade ago.Initial dives shortly after that revealed a few details. In an article in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology published earlier this year, Nadel and fellow researchers disclosed it was asymmetrical, made of basalt boulders and that "fish teem around the structure and between its blocks."
The cone-shaped structure is found at a depth of between three and 12 meters (nine and 40 feet) beneath the surface, about half a kilometer (1,600 feet) from the sea's southwestern shore. Its base is buried under sediment. The authors conclude the structure is man-made, made of stones that originated nearby, and it weighs about 60,000 tons. The authors write it "is indicative of a complex, well-organized society, with planning skills and economic ability."The rest is a mystery.Yitzhak Paz, an archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority who is involved in the project, said that based on sediment buildup, it is between 2,000 and 12,000 years old, a vast range that tells little about it. Based on other sites and artifacts found in the region, Paz places the site's origin some time during the 3rd millennium B.C., or about 5,000 years ago, although he admits the timeframe is just a guess."The period is hard for us to determine. No scientific work was carried out there, no excavations, no surveys. We have no artifacts from the structure," Paz said.
Archaeologists were also cautious about guessing the structure's purpose. They said possibilities include a burial site, a place of worship or even a fish nursery, which were common in the area, but they said they wanted to avoid speculation because they have so little information. It's not even clear if the structure was built on shore when the sea stood at a low level, or if it was constructed underwater. Paz reckons it was built on land, an indication of the sea's low level at the time.In order to fill in the blanks, archaeologists hope to inspect the site underwater, despite the expense and the complexities.Nadel noted that working underwater demands not only a skill such as scuba diving, but also labor-intensive excavations that are particularly difficult in the Sea of Galilee, which already has low visibility and where any digging can unleash a cloud of sediment and bury what's just been uncovered. Also, divers can remain under water only for a limited amount of time every day and must choose the best season that can provide optimal conditions for excavating.
"Until we do more research, we don't have much more to add," Nadel said. "It's a mystery, and every mystery is interesting."___Follow Tia Goldenberg on Twitter at www.twitter.com/tgoldenberg

More and more Israelis living in Judea and Samaria (Shomron) have come under attack as Palestinian Authority terrorist groups increase the frequency of assaults on drivers in the region. One of the victims is Michal Weisel, who shared her post-attack thoughts with Arutz Sheva.Israelis need to take advantage of technology that can reinforce car windows against attack, she said, and not to rely on the IDF to stop attacks.Weisel was attacked by three young Arab men hurling heavy stones. “It’s lucky that the car was a reinforced car owned by the Regional Council – the rocks bounced off the frame of the car,” she recalled.
“I hope the IDF will take strong action against rock throwers, but for my part, I’m going to reinforce my car, because it saves lives,” she said. “A rock can kill, no less so than gunfire.”“We’re in an Intifada, even if they media hasn’t said so yet,” she warned. The Palestinian Authority has launched two past “Intifada” terrorism wars targeting Israeli civilians in a variety of attacks including rock and firebomb attacks on passing cars, stabbings and shootings in civilian homes, and suicide bombings. The IDF has reportedly started preparing for a third round of “Intifada” attacks. However, current and former military leaders have reassured civilians that there is currently no new Intifada, despite the many recent attacks on Israeli drivers.

Kerry, Lavrov to meet on Syria in Paris on Monday

AMMAN (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet privately in Paris on Monday to discuss their efforts to bring Syria's warring parties to a peace conference, a U.S. official said on Friday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the two men would "continue their conversation (from) Moscow," a reference to their May 7 agreement to try to get the Syrian government and opposition to discuss an end to the more than 2-year-old civil war."Secretary Kerry will meet with Foreign Minister Lavrov on Monday in Paris to continue discussions from their meeting just a few weeks ago in Russia and provide updates as they plan ahead for the international conference on Syria," the official said.(Reporting by Arshad Mohammed; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Syria opposition struggles to forge transition plan before talks

By Khaled Yacoub Oweis
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Syria's divided opposition leaders have failed to back a plan by their outgoing leader for President Bashar al-Assad to cede power gradually to end the country's civil war, highlighting the obstacles to international peace talks expected next month. The 16-point plan proposed by Moaz Alkhatib, who resigned as head of the Western-backed opposition National Coalition in March, urges Assad to hand power to his deputy or prime minister and then go abroad with 500 members of his entourage.Alkhatib's proposal appeared to win little support from other Syrian opposition figures at a three-day meeting in Istanbul to decide how to respond to a U.S.-Russian proposal to convene peace talks involving Assad's government next month. The coalition is under international pressure to resolve internal divisions ahead of a conference Washington and Moscow see as crucial to hopes of ending two years of civil war which has allowed al-Qaeda linked militants a growing role in Syria.Looming large over the Istanbul meeting, which began on Thursday, is the shadow of Saudi Arabia, the main Arab backer of the opposition, which according to coalition sources is pushing to have the transfer of power in Syria top the agenda in Geneva."Saudi Arabia is not happy that Geneva does not look like it will lead with the exit of Assad on day one," a senior coalition source said.Opposition leaders said the coalition was likely to attend the planned peace conference, which could take part in Geneva in the coming weeks, but doubted it would produce any immediate deal on Assad's departure.Coalition spokesman Khaled Saleh said the 60-member body supports "any conference that helps transition the situation into an elective government away from the dictatorship" but would not go without indications Assad is on his way out.Assad, who has defied Western and Arab calls for him to go, has not confirmed his government would attend the peace talks, although Russia said on Friday his administration had agreed in principle to attend.
NEW LEADERSHIP
Syria's opposition in exile also aims to elect a coherent leadership during the talks in Istanbul. It has been rudderless since the resignation in March of Alkhatib, a respected Damascene cleric, who had floated two initiatives for Assad to leave power peacefully. His latest plan, posted on his Facebook page, calls on Assad to step down in favor of Prime Minister Wael al-Halki or Vice-President Farouq al-Shara, a veteran politician who has kept a low profile since the revolt began in March 2011, prompting opposition claims last year that he planned to defect.Alkhatib said Assad should respond within 20 days and that he should then be given a month to dissolve parliament. Once Assad had ceded power, his government should stay in office for 100 days and restructure the military before handing over to a transitional government "which should be agreed upon and negotiated within the framework of international assurances".Opposition figures in Istanbul were dismissive."He has the right to submit papers to the meeting like any other member but his paper is heading directly to the dustbin of history. It is a repeat of his previous initiative which went nowhere," a senior coalition official said.Assad and his father before him have ruled Syria for four decades. He has vowed to defeat what he calls the "terrorists" behind an uprising that began with months of peaceful protests. His violent response eventually ignited an armed revolt.More than 80,000 people have been killed in what is now a full-scale civil war that has dragged in Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas and is spilling into other neighboring countries.Washington has pressured the opposition coalition to resolve its divisions and to expand to include more liberals who can act independently of Islamists."The international community is walking a little faster than the opposition. It wants to see a complete list of participants from the Syrian side for Geneva and this means that the coalition has to sort its affairs," a European diplomat said.Burhan Ghalioun, a strong candidate to become the new head of the opposition, said the coalition was likely to agree to go to Geneva because it did not want Assad to gain political advantage from the meeting, although, he said, it was unlikely to produce any deal for a transition of power.Other possible candidates include Ahmed Tumeh Kheder, a prominent opposition campaigner from the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, which borders Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland; Louay al-Safi, a professor who has taught in the United States; and acting coalition president George Sabra, a Christian who led pro-democracy demonstrations early in the uprising.(Additional reporting by Oliver Holmes in Beirut, Thomas Grove in Moscow; editing by Nick Tattersall and Philippa Fletcher)

Tremors felt in Moscow as 8.2 quake rattles Russia's Sakhalin region

Tremors have been felt all across Russia and in Europe, following a major 8.2 earthquake in the Sakhalin region. Panicking Muscovites began calling security services, and some decided to leave their homes.
The residents informed security services of vibration and tremors that caused furniture and kitchen utensils to move. The magnitude of the tremors felt in Moscow was no higher than 1 on the Richter scale, the Agency of Hydrometeorological and Environmental monitoring indicated.Moscow residents wrote on Twitter about the tremors: “wasn’t really strong, but things hanging on the walls were shaking,” “the fourteenth floor of the Smolensky Passage [a large market in the city center] was noticeably shaking!” and “a house was shaking in the center of Moscow on Tverskaya street.”“The aftershocks occurred in Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, in Europe – for instance, in Romania. Almost the entire continent was shaken,” Anatoly Tsygankov, the head of the Situation Center for Agency of Hydrometeorological and Environmental monitoring told Interfax news agency. An employee at news website NEWSru.com recounted the Moscow tremor: “I have a flat on the 7th floor. At 9:43am I was sitting at my desk in front of the computer when the desk started shaking. We have a metro station underground, so I thought that something happened there. But the vibrations continued, and it became clear that everything was shaking like during an earthquake." The witness says there were at least three tremors; two strong ones, and another, weaker one. Then he started calling Emergency. When the operator answered, the reporter heard someone telling another operator their address, and he understood that the vibrations were happening all over Moscow.
The scientists, however, are sure that there is nothing outstanding in the quake, but it's “deep – around 600 kilometers, in this situation tremors can be felt at long distances from the epicenter,” academic and scientist Alexander Soloviev explained.

In its 2013 Atlantic hurricane season outlook issued today, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting an active or extremely active season this year..For the six-month hurricane season, which begins June 1, NOAA’s Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook says there is a 70 percent likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher). These ranges are well above the seasonal average of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.“With the devastation of Sandy fresh in our minds, and another active season predicted, everyone at NOAA is committed to providing life-saving forecasts in the face of these storms and ensuring that Americans are prepared and ready ahead of time.” said Kathryn Sullivan, Ph.D., NOAA acting administrator. “As we saw first-hand with Sandy, it’s important to remember that tropical storm and hurricane impacts are not limited to the coastline. Strong winds, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes often threaten inland areas far from where the storm first makes landfall.”

Three climate factors that strongly control Atlantic hurricane activity are expected to come together to produce an active or extremely active 2013 hurricane season. These are:
  • A continuation of the atmospheric climate pattern, which includes a strong west African monsoon, that is responsible for the ongoing era of high activity for Atlantic hurricanes that began in 1995;

  • Warmer-than-average water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea; and

  • El Niño is not expected to develop and suppress hurricane formation.
“This year, oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the Atlantic basin are expected to produce more and stronger hurricanes,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “These conditions include weaker wind shear, warmer Atlantic waters and conducive winds patterns coming from Africa." NOAA’s seasonal hurricane outlook is not a hurricane landfall forecast; it does not predict how many storms will hit land or where a storm will strike. Forecasts for individual storms and their impacts will be provided throughout the season by NOAA’s National Hurricane Center.
New for this hurricane season are improvements to forecast models, data gathering, and the National Hurricane Center communication procedure for post-tropical cyclones. In July, NOAA plans to bring online a new supercomputer that will run an upgraded Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) model that provides significantly enhanced depiction of storm structure and improved storm intensity forecast guidance. Also this year, Doppler radar data will be transmitted in real time from NOAA’s Hurricane Hunter aircraft. This will help forecasters better analyze rapidly evolving storm conditions, and these data could further improve the HWRF model forecasts by 10 to 15 percent. The National Weather Service has also made changes to allow for hurricane warnings to remain in effect, or to be newly issued, for storms like Sandy that have become post-tropical. This flexibility allows forecasters to provide a continuous flow of forecast and warning information for evolving or continuing threats.“The start of hurricane season is a reminder that our families, businesses and communities need to be ready for the next big storm,” said Joe Nimmich, FEMA associate administrator for Response and Recovery. “Preparedness today can make a big difference down the line, so update your family emergency plan and make sure your emergency kit is stocked. Learn more about how you can prepare for hurricane season at www.ready.gov/hurricanes.”
Next week, May 26 - June 1, is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. To help those living in hurricane-prone areas prepare, NOAA is offering hurricane preparedness tips, along with video and audio public service announcements in both English and Spanish, featuring NOAA hurricane experts and the FEMA administrator at www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/. NOAA’s outlook for the Eastern Pacific basin is for a below-normal hurricane season and the Central Pacific basin is also expected to have a below-normal season. NOAA will issue an updated outlook for the Atlantic hurricane season in early August, just prior to the historical peak of the season.NOAA’s mission is to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and to conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources. Tornado insured losses estimated at $2 billion-$5 billion

(Reuters) - Tornadoes that struck the United States from May 18 to May 20 caused between $2 billion to $5 billion of insured losses, disaster modeling company Eqecat said late Thursday. At the high end of the range, the tornado outbreak may rank as the second-worst ever in terms of insured losses, behind the late-April 2011 twisters that devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and other communities.Eqecat said most of the losses were attributed to the tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma, on Monday. That storm, with winds that exceeded 200 miles per hour, killed 24 and flattened two elementary schools. Some 76 tornadoes struck across 10 states over a three-day period, said Eqecat, whose models are used by the insurance industry to forecast losses. The worst of it was in Moore, where the firm said about 13,000 structures were damaged.Oklahoma's insurance commissioner, John Doak, said earlier this week he expected damage from the Moore tornado to exceed $3 billion on its own.The brunt of those losses is likely to fall on insurers State Farm and Farmers Insurance Group, which together have an aggregate market share of nearly 29 percent in the state, according to SNL Financial.Over the last two years, tornadoes have become a huge loss driver for the insurance industry. The German reinsurer Munich Re has estimated tornadoes caused about $40 billion in insured losses in the United States in 2011 and 2012.Since 1980, average thunderstorm losses, including tornadoes, have risen sevenfold.(Reporting by Ben Berkowitz; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe and Bernadette Baum)

Encyclical on faith: From Benedict XVI to Francis

The Vatican's spokesman, Federico Lombarbi, has denied Bishop Martella's claim that Ratzinger is currently finishing the encyclical and will then pass it on to his successor.

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city Pope Francis is apparently thinking about writing an encyclical on poverty. But first he plans to publish the encyclical on faith which his predecessor, Benedict XVI, the Supreme Pontiff Emeritus (the title given to him in the Pontifical Yearbook), is apparently working on. The Bishop of Molfetta (Italy), Luigi Martella, broke the news which appeared in the latest issue of diocesan weekly Luce & Vita. Martella was recently received by the Pope on the occasion of his ad limina visit to Rome. But although Vatican spokesman, Fr. Federico Lombardi, confirmed that Francis will be publishing the encyclical on faith, he denied the bishops’ claim about Benedict XVI’s involvement. “The news about Benedict XVI finishing off the text, is completely unfounded.”Mgr. Martella outlined what he and Francis talked about during the audience, saying that the Pope “wanted to let him in on a secret, almost like a revelation.” “Benedict XVI is finishing off his encyclical on faith and Francis will be signing it,” the bishop wrote. “He intends to write his own – first - encyclical on poverty soon. It will be titled “Beati pauperes!”, poverty intended in an evangelical not in an ideological or political sense,” he pointed out.According to the Bishop of Molfetta, Ratzinger is apparently working on the faith encyclical himself. Work on the text began months ago and the aim was to have the text published by 2013, the year Benedict XVI chose as the Year of Faith. Until now, however, it was thought that the Pope was not working on the text himself, but that it was being prepared by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, under his guidance. The day after Ratzinger announced his resignation, Lombardi confirmed a document did indeed exist but it would not be published before Benedict XVI’s resignation was official. Some thought the encyclical on faith – the last in the faith, hope and charity trilogy (the latter two themes were the focus of Ratzinger’s encyclicals “Spe salvi” and “Deus caritas est”) – would be turned into a book or at any rate a “private” text by the former Pope. But from what Mgr. Martella says, it seems Francis has decided to make the project his own. Something similar happened the day after Benedict XVI’s election. In his fist encyclical, “Deus caritas est” he used some of the material which John Paul II had gathered, to prepare a draft, which was then put away in a drawer until a later date.
