Malaysia-In open letter, MH370 family members demand raw data be released to independent investigators-May 8, 2014Maylamail-Online
KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Almost 350 family members of passengers of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 are demanding raw data be released for independent analysis, preferably to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the non-profit research facility responsible for finding the remains of missing Air France Flight 447 in 2009, almost two years after it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.Amid questions about how the investigation has been conducted, the family members made the demand in an open letter sent to the leaders of Malaysia, China and Australia today. In the letter they questioned how authorities could be certain the Boeing 777 had crashed into the Indian Ocean after vanishing without a trace two months ago.“Due to the lack of physical evidence that MH370 ended in the Southern Indian Ocean, the families are in urgent need for the conclusion, based on [British satellite communications firm] Inmarsat data analysis, that the aircraft’s flight ended in that ocean to be reconsidered to confirm its accuracy,” they wrote. In the letter titled “A PLEA FROM THE FAMILIES OF MH370,” the relatives argued the data analysis “only indicates a probable southern flight path.”They said the data did not “support a definitive conclusion that no other flight path was possible.”“We feel that it is necessary that the data be subject to independent third-party review. It is our hope that with out of box thinking, the whole world can help to look for the plane.”The group of family members is calling itself “The Cry for Truth: Voice370”.

In the letter, it said it has the “sole intention of finding MH370 and our loved ones.”Instead of governments leading the investigation, the families said all the data should be handed to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) which found the remains of missing Air France Flight 447 in 2009, almost two years after it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.“In our view, that WHOI is not a commercial entity and its successful location of Air France 447 demonstrates that it has the experience and expertise to conduct the search for MH370 in an ethical manner,” the families said. With the air and surface search now halted, a new search phase costing around A$60 million (RM181 million) will begin after existing visual and sonar search data is analysed and a contractor is found to lease the sophisticated equipment needed, officials said after meeting in Canberra earlier this week.Experts have narrowed the search area where the plane is presumed to have crashed to a large arc of the Indian Ocean about 1,600km (1,000 miles) northwest of the west Australian city of Perth.Last week, Malaysia released its most comprehensive account yet of what happened to Flight MH370, detailing the route the plane probably took as it veered off course and the confusion that followed. The officials have said the focus will be on 60,000 sq km (24,000 sq mile) of seabed in the Indian Ocean that could take a year to search.US President Barack Obama had publicly promised to commit more assets, but government sources say the United States is keen to begin passing on the costs of providing the expensive sonar equipment the officials say they are trying to source. The United States said over the weekend that it would only contribute its sophisticated Bluefin-21 underwater drone for one more month, placing pressure on Australia, China and Malaysia to find funding for the next phase of the search. A majority of the 239 people on board were Chinese nationals.Beijing-bound MH370 disappeared after leaving Kuala Lumpur on March 8 with 239 people on board.

MH370: One in 10 Americans believe aliens may be involved - poll-Syafique Shuib, Astro Awani | Updated: May 08, 2014-52 percent of the respondents believe that the general public will find out about what happened to flight MH370.

KUALA LUMPUR: Could aliens have been responsible for the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370? One in 10 Americans seemed to believe so.This was the findings of a survey conducted by news channel CNN and market research company ORC International based on phone interviews with 1,008 adult Americans. The survey was conducted from May 2 to 4, some two months after the disappearance of MH370 which was en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. In the survey, 52 percent of the respondents believed that the general public will find out about what happened and 46 percent say it will remain a mystery.Two-thirds of the respondents say the pilot or crew members were involved in the disappearance of the plane while 42 percent think hijackers were the culprits. On the possible location of flight MH370, 51 percent say it is located in the Indian Ocean while 46 percent believe it is located far from the search site. The majority of respondents want the search operation to continue. Meanwhile, only 26 percent said the Malaysian government has done a good job managing the situation and providing information to the public. On May 5, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak expressed Malaysia's resolve to continue the search for the MAS flight that has been missing since March 8.He said the country would carry on with the search for the Boeing 777-200 aircraft with the assistance of several other countries despite having nothing to show.

NEW SEARCH PHASE: SAR mission's technical aspects discussed, says navy deputy chief
KUALA LUMPUR: THE Tripartite Ministerial Meeting in Canberra, Australia, to discuss the new phase of the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been described as positive and productive.Royal Malaysian Navy deputy chief Vice-Admiral Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin, in a series of Twitter postings, expressed his gratitude to Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for the mandate on MH370 Tripartite meeting."TQ (Thank you) Sir @HishammuddinH2O for the mandate on MH370 Tripartite meeting. Extremely positive and productive engagement. Intense and constructive #MH370 Tripartite Meeting in Canberra. Outcome of high level of trust and commitment by all. Thank you Australia, China and friends of Malaysia," he said, adding that the best minds and assets would be committed to the search-and-recovery (SAR) mission.Kamarulzaman said among the matters discussed in the closed- door meeting was on the mapping of the southern Indian Ocean floor and how state- of-the-art equipment would be rolled out in the new phase of SAR."The best technology will be put to bear for next phase in search of #MH370," he said, adding that technical and operational challenges in the SAR mission were also discussed. He said former Australian Navy deputy chief Rear Admiral Trevor Jones and Environmental Geoscience division chief Dr Stuart Minchin briefed on operational and oceanographic challenges, where right assets with effective analysis were crucial at the meeting.Kamarulzaman also tweeted an image on the characteristics of two underwater search equipment, namely the multibeam echosounder and backscatter, which were discussed in the meeting. The multibeam echosounder for deep water could go to depths between 4,000m and 6,000m, compared with the Bluefin-21, which could only reach 4,500m."The best available (vessel mounted) multibeam systems (will be of) 12kHz or 30kHz (and will provide) high-resolution acquisition (and) information on seabed to improve autonomous under-water vehicle deployment options or navigation."The backscatter provides information to differentiate between "hard" and "soft" parts of the sea- bed and might provide targets for higher resolution survey work.Universiti Sains Malaysia Associate Prof Dr Mohd Rizal Arshad said the multibeam echosounder and backscatter were acoustic imaging devices that would be mounted at the bottom of the vessel. He said the multibeam echosounder would emit sound waves from directly beneath a ship's hull, while the backscatter would be used to produce high-resolution maps of the seabed."The raw data obtained will then be analysed to make 3D images," said Rizal, who specialises in underwater robotics technology. Meanwhile, Department of Civil Aviation director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, who was in Sydney, told the New Straits Times that the meeting was held to discuss the technical aspects of the SAR and for the officials to chart the next stage of search.

SEARCH GOES ON: Conditions in the Indian Ocean pose tough challenges, say experts

KUALA LUMPUR: THE next phase of the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 could see the introduction of new state-of-the-art equipment. As the search-and-recovery (SAR) team adopts more radical and out-of-the-box approaches towards finding the missing plane, experts believe including vehicles that are usually not the norm in such situations could prove to be advantageous. This is vital given the challenges posed by the weather and tough conditions in the Indian Ocean.Universiti Sains Malaysia Associate Professor Dr Mohd Rizal Arshad said the new equipment could be utilised to include a combination of sonar technology and Seismic Reflection Profiling (SRP).Sonar, or sound navigation and ranging, is used to develop nautical charts, locate underwater hazards for navigation, and for the search and mapping of objects on the seabed. SRP uses sound waves to image underground rock strata and is widely used in oil and gas exploration.Rizal cited the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) REMUS 6000 and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), or underwater rovers, as new equipment that could complement those which had already been used in the search. The REMUS 6000 specialises in deep ocean search-and-survey and sea-floor mapping, producing highly accurate images. The device has been designed to enable operations at depths of 6,000m, compared with the Bluefin-21, which could only reach depths of 4,500m.It is also known to have better stability underwater compared with Bluefin-21, which is prone to shifting locations due to rough underwater currents."Its versatile design allows long mission duration in shallow littoral areas," said Rizal, who specialises in underwater robotics technology.Rizal said the Malaysian government should have access to the primary data on sea-floor mapping, as it needed to obtain comprehensive information.Universiti Kuala Lumpur research and innovation head Associate Professor Captain Dr Mohd Harridon Mohamed Suffian said there was a possibility the Malaysian government would opt for ROVs to conduct the search.ROVs are widely used by the offshore oil and gas industry for drilling support and subsea construction services to enable deep water exploration. Harridon said ROVs were able to scour the seabed and produce a more comprehensive oceanographic map of the ocean floor, which is relatively unknown."It would be hard to map such a remote area. Therefore, 3D mapping should be done to examine if there are any unusual objects that could be related to the aircraft."Harridon said ROVs could produce detailed maps and sift through mud, which can be 50m to 100m deep in parts of the Indian Ocean. He said ROVs come with a host of features -- manipulators, sensors, Sonar, lights, cameras and tools for water temperature and sound velocity -- and transmits real-time data through cables attached to its vessel. It is also able to stay underwater for as long as electricity is available."Oil and gas companies use it to conduct mapping to explore potential sites for petroleum on the seabed. It is more effective than Bluefin-21 in terms of depth. It provides real-time flow of information, including video footage, compared with Bluefin-21, which needs to resurface after each 24-hour cycle."Harridon said the meeting between a panel of experts in Canberra, Australia, today would likely seek to finalise the usage of ROVs from oil and gas companies and the mapping areas under the new phase of the search.Meanwhile, an avionics engineer, who declined to be named, also vouched for the ROVs effectiveness and said the vehicle could reach depths of 7,000m.Senior leaders from Malaysia, China and Australia will meet today in Canberra to discuss details for the new phase of the SAR in an expanded area involving the southern Indian Ocean.(PIC - NEW STRAITS TIMES)

Canadian airline First Air to live stream black box data-By Nicole Bogart-Global News-How live-streaming black box data could prevent another Flight MH370 disaster-The flight data recorder from Air France flight 447 is displayed in front of journalists during a press conference in 2011.

TORONTO – In the months following the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, aviation experts have reopened the debate surrounding the live-streaming of black box data. But Canadian airline First Air will soon become one of the few in the world to have the option to live stream black box data in the event of an emergency – and the technology they are using is all Canadian made.Everybody talks about the black box on an airplane, but it is permanently installed on an airplane and if the airplane goes missing so does the black box,” said Vic Charlebois, vice president of Flight Operations.“What this technology allows us to do is if the aircraft gets into difficulty the Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS) will look back 20 seconds from where the event occurred and pick up the data from the airplane – the same data that is being stored in the black box – and start streaming it to a secure server.”The technology dubbed “FLYHTStream,” made by Calgary-based FLYHT Aerospace Solutions, allows those on the ground to have instant access to the flight data and cockpit audio recorder in the event of an emergency – whether it be system failures, or some catastrophe, like a crash.FLYHTStream can be activated in multiple ways. The pilot can activate it by pressing a button located in the cockpit, or the software can be pre-programmed to automatically switch on during certain events, such as a depressurization or engine failure.Live-streaming can also be activated from the ground.“If one of the dispatchers happened to see something unusual going on with the aircraft they could push a button and it would start streaming the data to the ground,” said Charlebois.“Let’s take the case of the Malaysian aircraft – if it was being monitored through satellites and a dispatcher did see it wander off course somewhere, the procedure would be to activate the Flight Stream and then contact the crew to see what was going on.”System costs roughly $100,000 per aircraft. The process started over two years ago when First Air, which operates in remote towns in Canada’s northern regions, partnered with FLYHT to install the company’s Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS) system in their fleet.Due to the lack of infrastructure in Arctic regions, First Air needed to invest in a system that would give them better communication with their pilots, especially when dealing with the ever-changing weather conditions in the north. The AFIRS box, installed in about 20 planes for roughly $100,000 each, provides voice data and text services, along with satellite and Internet-based systems to track aircraft.FLYHTStream is currently not operational in First Air’s aircraft, though the company is already using the AFIRS system for flight monitoring. Charlebois said the company is essentially awaiting a software upgrade that would allow FLYHTStream to work if needed.“The initial up-front cost was for the boxes to be put in,” he said. “This is just a natural progression of using the capabilities of the system that we have.”They hope to begin testing the system by the end of May.

Many advantages to the technology

Though Charlebois said moving to FLYHTStream was a natural progression for the company, he added that the system will allow them to be better prepared in an emergency.    “We’re up in the high Arctic, so if an aircraft were to go missing you won’t be able to find it quickly,” he said.Live-streaming flight data will also allow teams to create specialized animations recreating what happened in flight. This practice is often used in air crash investigations to discover what actions the plane took mid-air; however, crews normally have to wait until the planes black boxes are found and that can take years if the plane went down in an Ocean. The technology helps airlines save money by monitoring how the plane is flying – and in what conditions – to help with fuel economy.“We’ve saved tens of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands, of dollars [already] just being able to communicate with our aircraft,” said Charlebois.
