Nanaimo blasted for pulling plug on U.S. leadership telecast after sponsor linked to anti-gay marriage -Tristin Hopper | July 2, 2014 6:48 PM ET-National Post

VICTORIA — Councillors in Nanaimo, B.C., are fending off a storm of criticism after they pulled the plug on a leadership telecast at the town’s convention centre because its sponsor was linked to anti-gay-marriage activism in the U.S.“I’ve received many emails from people who were planning on investing here or visiting here, and now want nothing to do with us,” said Bill McKay, the only Nanaimo councillor to have voted against the cancellation, which has become a cause célèbre on religious blogs and on Wednesday led to a ‘‘civil liberties’’ demonstration in the city.

“It could take us years to climb out of this hole.”

On May 9, Nanaimo’s city-owned Vancouver Island Convention Centre had been scheduled to host Leadercast, a telecast of an Atlanta leadership conference featuring speeches from South African anti-Apartheid activist Desmond Tutu, Canadian-born writer Malcolm Gladwell and former U.S. First Lady Laura Bush, among others. But with only four days to go, Nanaimo Councillor Fred Pattje introduced a surprise motion withdrawing the event’s permit because it was “associated with organizations or people that promote or have a history of divisiveness, homophobia, or other expressions of hate.”“It sends a message that I wish did not have to be sent, but here we are,” Mr. Pattje told the council.Leadercast, which was broadcast in hundreds of communities across North America, is sponsored by the U.S. fast food chain Chick-Fil-A. Two years ago, Chick-Fil-A’s COO, Dan Cathy, attracted U.S.-wide condemnation from gay rights groups after he said that the acceptance of gay marriage was “inviting God’s judgment on our nation.”Through an affiliated charity, WinShape, the company has also funnelled more than $5-million to anti-gay groups, although public backlash has prompted Chick-Fil-A to dramatically scale back such support for in recent years.“I don’t think I expected there to be anti-LGBT rhetoric during the Leadercast,” said E.T. Turner, spokesperson with the Vancouver Island Rainbow Association, a prominent opponent of the Nanaimo Leadercast. “My concern was more ‘Where was the money going?’”Mr. Pattje told the council he was motivated to get Leadercast’s permit withdrawn after receiving two phone calls from constituents and doing some subsequent Googling. As city staff were not given any time to research the 11th hour motion, and since Leadercast’s organizers had not been invited to testify, city council had to rely almost exclusively on Mr. Pattje’s account.“Good decisions aren’t made on scanty information,” said lose dissident Mr. McKay.Despite media reports that Leadercast was a “Christian conference,” it had no explicit religious overtones. While virtually all speakers were acknowledged Christians, the conference did not touch on same sex issues and the telecast’s official website does not even contain the words “Christ,” “God” or “prayer.”When asked at council whether he had invited event sponsors to make their case before council, Mr. Pattje replied that it was “kind of beside the point as far as I was concerned.”

WikipediaNanaimo is “a very inclusive community,” city councillor Bill McKay says. After 20 minutes of debate, the resolution passed eight to one. The Leadercast was subsequently cancelled, resulting in financial losses for its two main Nanaimo sponsors, the Nanaimo Daily News and Coastal Community Credit Union.“Good decisions aren’t made on scanty information,” said lose dissident Mr. McKay.James Lunney, the Tory MP for Nanaimo-Alberni, soon responded with a two page letter calling the resolution an “alarming and unprecedented action that was based on innuendo and unsupported accusations.”Despite Nanaimo’s cancellation, the telecast was hosted without incident in other West Coast cities such as Victoria and Vancouver, as well as 800 other communities around the world.“I am asking council what moral authority, what evidence of hatred and malevolence by this alleged subversive movement it possesses that would trump the good judgment of our own community sponsors,” wrote Mr. Lunney.Nanaimo-Cowichan NDP MP Jean Crowder, on the other hand, praised the sudden cancellation as a necessary step towards making Nanaimo a “safe and inclusive community.” “Thank you for serving as a model to other communities,” she wrote in a May letter to council. The Vancouver Island Rainbow Association also drafted a letter calling the cancellation further proof of city council making Nanaimo a “warm and accepting place to live no matter what your sexual identity is.”Last week, though, City Hall issued a lukewarm retraction, saying that “if presented with comparable circumstances again, Nanaimo’s current Council is confident that actions similar to those taken on May 5 would not be repeated.”On Wednesday, the city of 83,000 was host to an impromptu “civil liberties meetup” by Sun News host Ezra Levant, who last week accused Nanaimo of “the most disgraceful act of discrimination I can recall in Canada in my life.”Spurred by the Sun News broadcast, religious blogs in both Canada and the United States soon exploded with accusations that Nanaimo, birthplace of the Nanaimo bar and home to a famed annual bathtub race, is a nest of “fascists,” “anti-Christian bigotry” and “homosexual bullies.”‘I think in this case, most of us in the community think it should have gone a different direction or should have never seen the light of day’The unassuming West Coast city is even the prime target of TheRealBigots.com, a Levant-promoted website inviting donations for an as-yet-undefined legal battle against the city’s “vile bigotry.” Already, the Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms has offered its services to “defend Nanaimo residents”Ron Bolin, a Nanaimo city hall blogger and no fan of the current council, said things may be getting a bit “out of proportion.”“They’re being portrayed as demons; they may be dumb and sometimes not considerate of what they’re talking about, but they’re certainly not monsters,” he said. “They just sort of shoot from the hip and worry about it later.”The Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, who lost money on the event, added their voice to council critics opposition after being barraged by letter writers spurred by Mr. Levant’s broadcast.“I think in this case, most of us in the community think it should have gone a different direction or should have never seen the light of day,” Chamber CEO Kim Smythe told the National Post.Mr. McKay said Wednesday he intends to bring forward a motion at the next meeting of council, July 14, that would both repeal the original act and order a “complete investigation on all of the events leading up to the cancellation.”“The citizens of Nanaimo are just not like that; we’re a very inclusive community” he said.National Post
