1,500 Senegalese march against Charlie Hebdo cartoons-AFP-JAN 24,15-YAHOONEWS

Dakar (AFP) - Around 1,500 people including the prime minister marched Saturday in Senegal against caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.Premier Mohammed Dionne was joined at the demonstration in Dakar by cabinet colleagues, civil society activists, lawmakers, religious leaders and hundreds of members of the public."I'm not Charlie -- I am a Muslim", "Freedom of expression is not the freedom to insult", "Do not touch my prophet" read placards brandished by demonstrators. The event, during which a French flag was burned, used the slogan "I am Nigerian, I am African" to denounce the silence of African leaders and the world over massacres on the continent, in contrast with the emphatic response to the Paris attacks.Nigeria's volatile northeast has repeatedly come under attack from Boko Haram extremists who began their deadly insurgency to impose Sharia in the mainly-Muslim north in 2009 and have killed thousands."Islam is a religion of peace," said Abdoulaye Mactar Diop, the Islamic leader of Senegal's ethnic Lebou community, accusing France of having "encouraged the publication of the latest issue of Charlie Hebdo to laugh at us".The protests were called in response to a cartoon published by Charlie Hebdo a week after a January 7 attack by Islamist gunmen at its Paris headquarters killed 12 people.Depictions of the prophet are considered forbidden in Islam and the latest one has sparked angry protests across the Muslim world, with Senegal banning the January 14 edition of the magazine."Charlie replied with provocation, we will respond with peace. Charlie has accomplices that must be denounced. France needs to stop," said organiser Sambou Biagui, of the the African Platform for Development and Human Rights. The march came a day after hundreds of people gathered in front of the Dakar's Grand Mosque after Friday prayers to denounce caricatures of the prophet. They criticised President Macky Sall for attending the march against terrorism held in Paris on January 12.Sall told state media he would never countenance the practices of "a newspaper that is attacking our Islamic values".Sall, who left for Saudi Arabia Friday to offer condolences for the death of King Abdullah, said his presence in Paris was due to his "desire to present condolences on the killing of innocent people while reaffirming my commitment in the fight against any terrorist act".

Obama, world leaders head to Saudi Arabia to offer condolences-Reuters-JAN 24,15-YAHOONEWS

RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will visit Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to meet its new King Salman after the death of his predecessor Abdullah on Friday, testimony to Riyadh's important role in energy markets and the fight against Islamist militancy.Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande and Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito will visit on Saturday and Sunday to offer condolences.Obama will cut short a visit to India to pay his respects instead of Vice President Joe Biden, who had been scheduled to fly in from Washington, the White House said on Saturday.Muslim leaders paid their respects on Friday at Abdullah's funeral in Riyadh. Some international human rights groups, meanwhile, have called on Western leaders to condemn Saudi Arabia's record of crushing dissent and depriving women and foreign workers of rights instead of praising its late king.Salman takes charge in Saudi Arabia at a time of deep uncertainty in the kingdom, surrounded by a region in tumult and nervous about both Iranian influence and the spread of Islamist militants. The kingdom's role in orchestrating Arab support for joint action with Western countries against the Islamic State group has won praise in Washington, while its role as biggest oil exporter is particularly important at this time of market instability.Saudi jets have bombed IS targets in Syria, its top clerics have issued repeated denunciations of the militant group despite similarities between its ideology and Wahhabism, and the police have detained thousands of militant suspects in the past decade.Salman pledged on Friday to maintain the kingdom's policies and kept most of Abdullah's cabinet, including the oil, finance and foreign affairs ministers, in place.
Western countries also value the kingdom as an important market for their defense industries and Salman quickly moved to appoint his son Prince Mohammed, 35, as his own successor as Defence Minister, responsible for big arms contracts.Saudi Arabia observes no official period of mourning, in keeping with the ascetic traditions of its official Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam, but the royal court has announced that it will receive condolences and pledges of allegiance until Sunday.Late on Friday state television showed princes, Wahhabi clerics, tribal chiefs, military leaders, major businessmen and other dignitaries crowding the royal palace to kiss King Salman's shoulder or hand. The king's rapid appointments of half-brother Muqrin, 69, as Crown Prince and nephew Mohammed bin Nayef, 55, as Deputy Crown Prince, appeared to resolve for many years to come speculation that succession disputes might destabilize the ruling family.(Reporting By Angus McDowall Editing by Jeremy Gaunt)

Japan condemns apparent Islamic State execution, demands hostage release-Reuters-By Linda Sieg and Kiyoshi Takenaka-JAN 24,15-YAHOONEWS

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday called the apparent killing of a Japanese captive by Islamic State militants "outrageous and impermissible," and again called for the release of a Japanese journalist being held by the group.Abe, speaking to public broadcaster NHK, said chances were high that a recording and an image of what appeared to be the decapitated body of Japanese captive Harman Yukawa, which emerged late on Saturday, were authentic.Abe also called for the immediate release of the remaining Japanese captive, reporter Kenji Goto, and said he was putting top priority on saving Goto's life. But he reiterated that Japan would not give in to terrorism."Such an act of terrorism is outrageous and impermissible, which causes me nothing but strong indignation," Abe said."Again, I strongly demand that Mr. Kenji Goto not be harmed and be immediately released. The government of Japan will, in its entirety, do its utmost in order to have him released."The sudden escalation of the hostage crisis has become a test for Abe and the dominant news story in Japan since Tuesday when Islamic State militants released a video showing Goto and Yukawa kneeling with a knife-wielding, masked man demanding a $200 million ransom for their release. The 72-hour deadline set in the first video expired on Friday. In the apparent recording, Goto says Yukawa was "slaughtered in the land of the Islamic Caliphate." But the journalist said the Japanese government could save him by working through Jordan where Abe earlier this week set up an office to coordinate the government's response to the hostage situation.Goto says the militants would release him in exchange for the release of Sajida al-Rishawi, an Iraqi held in Jordan. He says the militants have dropped the ransom demand.Abe told NHK that he had spoken to Jordan's King Abdullah about the situation but he had no comment on the Islamic State demand for the release of al-Rishawi.U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the brutal murder of Yukawa in a statement released by the White House, which did not address how Washington had confirmed his killing. The Obama statement, issued while he was en route to India, said: "The United States strongly condemns the brutal murder of Japanese citizen Haruna Yukawa by the terrorist group ISIL," using an acronym to refer to Islamic State. In a separate statement, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry also said Washington "strongly condemns ISIL's despicable murder of an innocent Japanese citizen, Haruna Yukawa."

HUMANITARIAN AID

Yukawa, 42, was seized by militants in August, after going to Syria in what he described as a plan to launch a security company. Goto, 47, a veteran war correspondent, went into Syria in late October seeking to secure Yukawa's release, according to friends and business associates. The new recording, which was released on YouTube late on Saturday before being deleted, showed an image of a gaunt Goto in an orange t-shirt with audio of what appeared to be him making a statement in English."I would like to stress how easy it is to save my life," the recording says. "You bring them their sister from the Jordanian regime, and I will be released immediately. Me for her."Al-Rishawi was arrested shortly after she failed to blow herself up in one of three deadly hotel bombings that hit the Jordanian capital in 2005.Japanese officials have said little about how they were looking to secure the release of the captives over the past week.In recent years, Japan has moved toward the U.S. government's hard line against paying ransoms after a 1977 case in which it paid $6 million to Japanese Red Army hijackers. Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso said last week that responding to demands set by the Islamic State would mean "giving in to terrorism".Japan's pacifist constitution also rules out any military response. A briefing paper prepared for Abe's office on Friday and reviewed by Reuters said Japan would not have the legal authority to strike the Islamic State even after proposed legislation loosening military restrictions that the prime minister is seeking to pass later this year.Abe and other officials have said Japan will press ahead with plans to offer over $200 million in humanitarian aid to help deal with refugees displaced by Islamic State.Abe announced that aid a week ago in Cairo during a trip through the Middle East when he also called Islamic State a threat to the region and the international order.Abe told NHK that Japan did not intend to join the U.S.-led military operation against Islamic State in the Middle East but wanted to continue to provide humanitarian aid.The Islamic State has executed five British and American aid workers and journalists in recent months. Yukawa's capture by Islamic State fighters outside Aleppo in August was the first time a Japanese citizen has been held by the group.Goto's mother, who had appeared before reporters on Friday in an emotional plea for his release, said she remained hopeful."The Japanese government will not let my son down. He will come back," Junko Ishido told reporters.(Additional reporting by Antoni Slodkowski, Nobuhiro Kubo, William Mallard, Mari Saito, Kevin Krolicki, Hitoshi Ishida in Tokyo, Mariam Karouny in Beirut, Roberta Rampton in Ramstein, Germany, Matt Spetalnick and Mark Hosenball in Washington and Suleiman al-Khalidi in Amman, writing by Linda Sieg; editing by David Evans and Gary Crosse)
