QZ8501: Divers find more bodies, reach fuselage-UPDATED: 23 Jan 2015 20:40-cna

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: Indonesian divers on Friday (Jan 23) finally reached the fuselage of an AirAsia plane that crashed last month, an official said, as four more bodies were recovered from the Java Sea.Flight QZ8501 went down on December 28 in stormy weather with 162 people on board as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore."Divers have reached the fuselage this morning but they could not get in because there were so many cables and debris," S B Supriyadi, a rescue agency official coordinating the search, told AFP. He said bad weather later in the day hampered further efforts to check if there were bodies inside.Rescuers have been trying in vain to reach the main body of the Airbus A320-200 since it was spotted on the seabed by a military vessel last week, but have been rebuffed by difficult conditions.Officials hope the majority of the victims will be inside the fuselage, and plan a more thorough assessment of the wreckage to determine how to retrieve the bodies. The four bodies found on Friday were located among debris near the wreckage.A total of 63 bodies have been found so far, Supriyadi said. Divers recovered six bodies on Thursday, some still strapped into their seats, near the main section of the plane. The jet's black boxes - the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder - were recovered last week, and investigators are analysing them.Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said this week that the plane climbed abnormally fast before stalling and plunging into the sea. Just moments before the plane disappeared off the radar, the pilot had asked to climb to avoid a major storm but was not immediately granted permission due to heavy air traffic.- AFP/ir

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: Indonesian divers on Thursday (Jan 22) recovered six bodies, some still belted into their seats, near the main section of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea last month, but failed again to reach the fuselage.Flight QZ8501 went down on December 28 in stormy weather with 162 people on board as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. A total of 59 bodies have so far been recovered."We have found six bodies, four of whom were females and two males, all adults," S B Supriyadi, a rescue agency official coordinating the search, told AFP. They had been flown to Pangkalan Bun town on Borneo island, the search headquarters. The main body of the Airbus A320-200 was spotted on the seabed by a military vessel last week following an arduous search in shallow Indonesian waters, but strong underwater currents and rough seas have prevented divers from reaching it. Final report on MH17 tragedy ready after mid-2015 - Najib-Bernama | Updated: January 23, 2015-ASTRO AWANI
DAVOS: The final report on the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 tragedy is expected to be ready after the middle of this year, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said here.Najib, who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 45th World Economic Forum here, said he was informed so by Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte at a bilateral meeting on Thursday.Najib, who is also finance minister, said the report was being prepared by an independent committee set up to investigate the tragedy."He (Rutte) has assured me that he would inform me first of the findings and conclusions before making the report public."The Dutch prime minister has reiterated that the MH17 tragedy has brought our two countries closer together," he told Malaysian journalists covering the WEF, Thursday.Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft is believed to have been shot down over the troubled country, but no one has claimed responsibility for the incident.A total of 196 Dutch nationals were among the passengers, who also comprised people from Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Canada and New Zealand.Najib said that his meeting with Rutte also touched on the Dutch interest in palm oil and timber. The Malaysian prime minister also held bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoglu, and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India, Chandrababu Naidu. They discussed, among others, measures to step up bilateral ties in all aspects including the technology, economic, trade and military sectors.

Saudi King Abdullah dies, brother Salman is new ruler-UPDATED: 23 Jan 2015 10:39-CNA

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's elderly King Abdullah died on Friday and was replaced by his brother Salman as the ruler of the world's top oil exporter and the spiritual home of Islam. The royal court said in a statement that Abdullah, believed to be around 90 years old, died at 1am local time (6am Singapore time) on Friday (Jan 23), expressing its "great sadness and mourning". The late monarch's half brother Moqren was named crown prince, according to the statement.Abdullah will be buried later Friday following afternoon prayers, and citizens would be invited to pledge allegiance to the new 79-year-old monarch and the crown prince at the royal palace, the statement said. Abdullah was hospitalised in December suffering from pneumonia and had been breathing with the aid of a tube.Under Abdullah, who took the throne in 2005, Saudi Arabia has been a key US ally in the Arab world, most recently joining the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. US President Barack Obama paid tribute to Abdullah as a valued ally."As our countries worked together to confront many challenges, I always valued King Abdullah's perspective and appreciated our genuine and warm friendship," Obama said in a written statement. "The closeness and strength of the partnership between our two countries is part of King Abdullah's legacy."As the top producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Saudi Arabia has been the driving force behind the cartel's refusal in recent months to slash output to support plummeting oil prices. Oil surged following Abdullah's death, with US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for March delivery soaring as much as 3.1 per cent in New York."The market is probably uncertain over what the new king would do about this oversupply issue," said Daniel Ang, an investment analyst with Phillip Futures in Singapore.

SALMAN TO FOLLOW BROTHER'S FOOTSTEPS

The kingdom is also home to Islam's holiest sites, Mecca and Medina, and its role as a spiritual leader for Sunni Muslims has seen it vying for regional influence with Shiite-dominated Iran. Salman, the new king, is widely expected to follow closely in his brother's footsteps, in foreign and energy policy as well as in making moderate reforms to the deeply conservative kingdom.Abdullah pushed through cautious changes while in power, challenging conservatives with moves such as including women in the Shura Council, an advisory body. He promoted the kingdom's economic development and oversaw its accession to the World Trade Organization, tapping into the country's massive oil wealth to build new economic cities, universities and high-speed railways. But the kingdom is still strongly criticised for a dismal human rights record, including the imprisonment of dissidents. Saudi Arabia is also the only country in the world that does not allow women to drive. Salman is a stalwart of the royal family credited with transforming the capital Riyadh during his half-century as governor.Recent years have seen concerns over his health after operations on his back, but Salman took on an increasingly high-profile role as Abdullah's own health issues forced him from the limelight. Abdullah named Moqren as deputy crown prince last March, in an unprecedented move aimed at smoothing succession hurdles.Moqren was a trusted confidant of Abdullah with a reputation as a liberal. A former air force officer born in 1945, Moqren is the youngest son of King Abdul Aziz bin Saud, the founder of Saudi Arabia. Since King Abdul Aziz's death in 1952 the throne has systematically passed from one of his sons to another. The streets of Riyadh were quiet following Abdullah's death but many Saudis turned to social media to mourn the king. Abdullah Saadoon, a member of the Shura Council and retired general, said Abdullah had "laid the foundations of a blessed renaissance" in Saudi Arabia.Another Twitter user, Shaima, said: "We didn't lose a king, we all lost a father". Government-owned Saudi-1 television showed only a repeat of the official announcement.Entertainment channels run by network MBC, which is privately owned by Sheikh Walid al-Ibrahim, a member of the royal family, switched to the company's Al-Arabiya news channel for continuous coverage of the king's death, mostly featuring file footage of Abdullah and Salman.- AFP/de/by
