In 1832, this law was used to arrest the cartoonist Charles Philipon, who drew a cartoon (now legendary) showing the King’s jowly face metamorphosing into a pear (“la poire” is French slang for “fathead”). Facing the court, Philipon asked, “Can I help it if His Majesty’s face is like a pear?”When the violence over the Danish Mohammed cartoons erupted in 2005, many newspapers decided that it was sufficient to merely describe the cartoons and not necessary to reprint them. The New York Times rationalized this position by saying it is “a reasonable choice for news organizations that usually refrain from gratuitous assaults on religious symbols, especially since the cartoons are so easy to describe in words.” But this position is based on the idea that words and images are interchangeable. Yet we have every reason to believe that images are not just a proxy for words, but have their own unique potency. JEET HEER-Special to The Globe and Mail.

Iranian dissident claims his country already has nukes-A former Iranian nuclear scientist alleges that Iran already has three nukes. A report from the Washington Times claims Iran obtained them from Kazakhstan.Jan 13, 2015, 04:15PM | Rachel Avraham-JERUSALEM ONLINE

Politics Podcasts from BlogTalkRadio with pesachelianashow

In the Pesach and Elana talk radio show in the United States, an Iranian caller claimed: “Iran has three atomic bombs.  They are using all of this hackling back and forwards and keep saying that they don’t have it but they have it and it got to the point that North Korea did the first atomic test, so there will come a time within this year that they will have enough just to test in the Iranian desert one of their 15 kilo ton atom bombs that they have.” According to Pesach Kirschner, the Iranian who made these allegations on his show is a former Iranian nuclear scientist that is presently hiding in the west and thus knows a lot about Iran’s nuclear program. So far, there has been no official confirmation for the report that Iran has three nuclear warheads. However, an article published in the Washington Times several years ago makes similar accusations, emphasizing that western intelligence sources have known about it for years.“When Iran began its nuclear program in the mid-1980s, I was working as a spy for the CIA within the Revolutionary Guards,” Reza Kahlili wrote in the Washington Times. “The Guards’ Intelligence at that time had learned of Saddam Hussein’s attempt to buy a nuclear bomb for Iraq. Guard commanders concluded that they needed a nuclear bomb because if Saddam were to get his own, he would use it against Iran. At that time, the two countries were at war.”“In the early 1990s, the CIA asked me to find an Iranian scientist who would testify that Iran had the bomb,” he stressed. “The CIA had learned that Iranian intelligence agents were visiting nuclear installations throughout the former Soviet Union, with particular interest in Kazakhstan.”

Iran already has three nukes

“Kazakhstan, which had a significant portion of the Soviet arsenal and is predominately Muslim, was courted by Muslim Iran with offers of hundreds of millions of dollars for the bomb,” Kahlili noted. “Reports soon surfaced that three nuclear warheads were missing. This was corroborated by Russian Gen. Victor Samoilov, who handled the disarmament issues for the general staff. He admitted that the three were missing from Kazakhstan.” According to this report, a US State Department official in 2008 confessed that it was common knowledge that Iran had acquired “tactical nuclear weapons” from one or more of the Soviet republics and Iranian sources confirmed that Iran had two workable nuclear warheads in 2011.“The Iranian people will not forgive Mr. Obama for what he is doing to them,” the Iranian caller on the Pesach and Elana talk radio show stressed, while referring to Obama’s actions following the massive Green Movement demonstrations within the country. “If that would have gone forward for two more nights, the mullahs would be gone and would have left Iran.” However, the Iranian dissident asserted that Obama’s inaction not only towards the Green Movement, but also for Iranian political prisoners, including one who is a US soldier, has led to the current Iranian nuclear crisis. The same talk radio show host asserted that as a result of Obama doing nothing, over a half of million Iranians were compelled to flee Iran after the contested Iranian presidential elections in 2009. Hundreds if not thousands of Iranians were killed, while thousands were jailed. At the same time, Obama shut down Iran’s Human Rights Watch in Washington, DC: “Obama and US Secretary of State Clinton did nothing as there were mass hangings throughout Iran. He has done nothing for the Iranian people. He has only given acceptance to the ruling mullahs that only care about themselves and not the Iranian people.”Furthermore, this report implies that the time for halting Iran’s nuclear program has passed due to Obama’s policy of making concessions to the mullahs rather than solving the nuclear crisis and addressing the massive human rights violations within Iran.

Paris Victims' Funeral: 'Entire Nation Stands Shaken in Pain'-Four victims of Islamist attack on kosher supermarket laid to rest Tuesday in emotional ceremony.By Tova Dvorin and Yoni Kempinski-First Publish: 1/13/2015, 11:48 AM / Last Update: 1/13/2015, 1:24 PM-ISRAEL NATIONALNEWS

The funerals for the four victims of the Paris terror attack on a kosher supermarket are being held in Jerusalem's Har Hamenuchot cemetery Tuesday, at 12:00 pm IST. The families of the victims - Philippe Braham, 40; Yohan Cohen, 22; Yoav Hattab, 21; and Francois-Michel Saada, in his 60s - were brought to Jewish state, along with the bodies, on an El-Al flight Tuesday morning.Among the participants at the noon ceremony will be President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Labor leader Yitzhak Herzog, ministers, MKs, Israel's chief rabbis, and other dignitaries. France's Environmental Affairs and Energy Minister, Segolene Royal, also attended.Hundreds of people have also flocked to the funeral to show their support for the victims and for the French Jewish community.Yonatan Saada lit a torch of remembrance at the event, saying his father longed to make aliyah (immigrate) to Israel."He was in love with Israel, he wanted to live here," he said, his voice breaking. "He's here now."Speaking in Hebrew, a bereaved Valerie Braham paid tribute to her husband Philippe. "I am crying but I know that you're all crying with me," she said, at a loss for words to express her grief.Gary Buchwald, a friend of the Brahams who flew in from Paris with the family, told AFP the impact of the attack was devastating."His wife is in pieces. They had to literally carry her to the plane. I am in shock like all of the French community in France," he said. "She won't get over this. It is not three million people marching in the street who will change this reality: other attacks will happen. We only have two choices: either we fight back or we run.""The grief is profound, the families are broken," top French Jewish official Joel Merghi confirmed to AFP. "The Jewish community has survived (other attacks) many times in history but it will be very difficult to recover this time," he said.

Emotional ceremony

Both Binyamin and Sara Netanyahu and Rivlin began the ceremony by moving through the crowd and personally giving condolences to the mourners, including hugs and handshakes. Both look especially stressed, with Netanyahu bearing an expression similar to the nervousness on his face during the solidarity rally in Paris. ZAKA volunteers brought the bodies for burial to the podium. The Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rishon Lezion, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, then read out Psalm 130 (Tehilim). The Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Rabbi Aryeh Stern, then assisted the heads of the families in the traditional kriya, or tearing, ceremony, whereby the mourner tears his shirt and recites the blessing, "True is the Righteous Judge" (Baruch Dayan Haemet). The mourners then said a collective kaddish prayer. The Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar, then said the "Kel Male Rachamim" prayer.

Eulogies

The family members then gave eulogies for the victims, accompanied by Jerusalem's mayor, Nir Barkat, and Jewish Agency head Natan Sharansky.Phillipe Braham's widow Valery broke down in tears during her speech, calling Phillipe "perfect" and noting he lived for his children. She was then hugged by both Netanyahus and Rivlin.President Reuven Rivlin then began to speak.“Dear families, Yoav, Yohan, Philippe, Francois-Michel, this is not how we wanted to welcome you to Israel. This is not how we wanted you to arrive in the Land of Israel, this is not how we wanted to see you come home, to the State of Israel, and to Jerusalem, its capital. We wanted you alive, we wanted for you, life."Reuven noted that they were killed for being Jews, saying "there is nothing more Jewish than preparing for Shabbat," referring to the attack.“At moments such as these, I stand before you, brokenhearted, shaken and in pain, and with me stands an entire nation.”"The killer made sure to be in a Jewish shop, and only then did he carry out the massacre," Rivlin continued. "This was pure, venomous evil, which stirs the very worst of memories.""This is sheer hatred of Jews; abhorrent, dark and premeditated, which seeks to strike, wherever there is Jewish life. In Paris, in Jerusalem, in Toulouse, and in Tel Aviv. In Brussels, and in Mumbai. In the streets, and in the synagogues. In the schools, and in the local market. In the train stations, and in the museums."Rivlin added that for Jews to be afraid in Europe was "unacceptable," and urged the international community to fight anti-Semitism, saying "ignorance and violence will not simply go away on their own.Rivlin encouraged French Jews to make Aliyah. "Our land is your land, our homes are your homes," he said. "Jewish blood is not worthless," he concluded. "Human blood is not worthless. The earth will not cover the blood, nothing will cure the pain. Here, between Jerusalem’s mountains, upon Har HaMenuchot, we lay to rest our brothers who have come from afar, our brothers, sons of France, but also sons of Jerusalem. May they be of blessed memory." Netanyahu: terror 'has never, ever beat us'Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu then spoke. "The entire nation of Israel and the State of Israel embraces you with love today," Netanyahu stated. "The four wonderful people here, like the Toulouse victims, were killed just because they were Jews. Their lives were cut short in an attack of hatred by a lowly murderer."Netanyahu said he would not "waste words" on the terrorists, nor on other terrorists in France."I think that most (world leaders) understand - or are at least starting to understand - that this terror committed by extremist Islam represents a clear and present threat to peace in the world in which we live," he said."These are not only the enemies of the Jewish people, but against all humanity," he urged. "The time has come to cut off and destroy these enemies from within our midst."The Prime Minister then shifted focus to the Jewish people, and to hope. "We should focus on the spirit that exists here: You will never, ever beat us," he said. "This is the strength of an ancient people that has always prevailed and thank God, look around you, here in the mountains of Jerusalem, today we have a state of our own, flourishing and advanced, a state that is a moral lighthouse unto the world – and our president was right to say: Jews have a right to live in many countries and have full security, but I believe that they know in their heart, there is one country which is their historic home, a state which will always accept them with open arms.""This is the hope of the entire Jewish people."Herzog: we will not let terror win-Labor leader and Opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog then spoke, beginning with the Elokai Netzor prayer, which discusses the soul.Herzog then connected the attack to the massacre in Har Nof in November.“A straight line connects the murder of the four Jews [in the Paris supermarket] to the bastards who penetrated the Har Nof synagogue and killed people at worship in their prayer shawls two months ago," Herzog said. "Terror will not win, we will not let determine our fate," Herzog asserted. "From here, Jerusalem, where Christians, Muslims, and Jews direct their prayers [. . .] we call on world leaders: stop the hatred, stop anti-Semitism, stop violence.""This is what brings the Jewish people together: the fact that we are set apart from other nations, the fact we face enemies," he said."We are all together - not only in values, but in the paths of our lives."France's Environmental Minister, Segolene Royal, then made several remarks on Paris's behalf, vowing to fight anti-Semitism, which she stated "has no place in France." She awarded every victim a Order of the Legion of Honor and gave medals to each of the victim's families. After her remarks, the funeral ceremony itself ended with a rendition of "Hatikva," and preparations for the actual burial elsewhere on the grounds began. Also in attendance were MK and Yachad-Ha'am Itanu leader Eli Yishai, as well as Jewish Home Chairman and Economics Minister Naftali Bennett, Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home), MK Dov Lipman (Yesh Atid), Deputy Religious Affairs Minister MK Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan (Jewish Home), Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, MK Yoni Chetboun (Ha'am Itanu), Jerusalem Police District Commander Moshe Edri, MK Danny Danon (Likud), and US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro.

Charlie Hebdo to publish Mohammad cartoon on front page-Reuters-By Leigh Thomas and John Irish 53-JAN 13,15-YAHOONEWS

PARIS, BOBIGNY, France (Reuters) - Charlie Hebdo will publish a front page showing a caricature of the Prophet Mohammad holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie" in its first edition since Islamist gunmen attacked the satirical newspaper. With demand surging for the edition due on Wednesday, the weekly planned to print up to 3 million copies, dwarfing its usual run of 60,000, after newsagents reported a rush of orders. International editions will be translated into 16 languages.France has drafted in thousands of extra police and soldiers to provide security after 17 people were killed in three days of violence that began when two Islamist gunmen burst into Charlie Hebdo's offices, opening fire in revenge for the paper's publication of satirical images of Mohammad in the past. The paper said the front page of its Jan. 14 edition would display a tearful Mohammad with a sign saying "Je suis Charlie" (I am Charlie) below the headline: "Tout est pardonné" (All is forgiven). The new edition of Charlie Hebdo, known for its satirical attacks on Islam and other religions, will include other cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammad and also making fun of politicians and other religions, its lawyer said."We will not back down, otherwise none of this has any meaning," Richard Malka told French radio. "If you hold the banner 'I am Charlie', that means you have the right to blaspheme, you have the right to criticize my religion."One Paris newspaper vendor said he had received 200 advance orders for Charlie Hebdo and was stopping there as he could no longer cope. There was no official reaction from the government on the new edition.Egypt's Grand Mufti warned Charlie Hebdo against publishing a new Mohammad caricature, saying it was a racist act that would incite hatred and upset Muslims around the world.French Muslim leaders urged their community to keep calm and respect the right to freedom of expression."What is uncomfortable for us is the representation of the Prophet," Abdelbaki Attaf told Reuters at the funeral in the northern Paris suburb of Bobigny of Ahmed Merabet, the Muslim policeman shot trying to defend the Hebdo cartoonists."Any responsible Muslim will find it hard to accept that. But we shouldn't ban it," said Attaf, himself an administrator at the mosque in nearby Gennevilliers occasionally visited by Cherif Kouachi, one of the Hebdo killers.A separate funeral was held in Jerusalem for four Jewish victims of a hostage-taking in a kosher deli in Paris.

GUN BATTLE

On Sunday, at least 3.7 million people throughout France took part in marches of support for Charlie Hebdo and freedom of expression. World leaders linked arms to lead more than one million people through Paris in an unprecedented homage to the victims.Three days of violence ended on Friday with a siege at a Jewish deli in Paris where four hostages and a gunman were killed. Shortly before that, police killed the Hebdo attackers in a gun battle at a print works northwest of the city.In the wake of the violence, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said 10,000 troops were being deployed at sensitive sites including synagogues, mosques and airports.President Francois Hollande's government has avoided referring to the Maghreb and African roots of the three killers. It has also sought to discredit their claim to be acting in the name of Islam, calling them "fanatics."However, France's Islamic council called on the government to step up protection of mosques, saying that at least 50 anti-Islamic acts had been reported since the attack.Abdallah Zekri, head of the National Observatory against Islamophobia, said Muslim sites such as Paris's main mosque were not getting the same protection as Jewish synagogues or schools."There are websites out there calling for the murder of Muslim leaders and the torching of Muslim religious sites," he told France Info. "Let's stop the double standards."European leaders fear the events in France will add to rising anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe. On Monday, a record 25,000 anti-Islamist protesters marched through the German city of Dresden, many holding banners with anti-immigrant slogans. In light of the threat, Le Drian said the government would need to review some of its military capabilities. He also raised the prospect of reconsidering the severely strained military budget when its long-term spending plan comes up for review later this year in parliament. The government was due to seek parliament's approval for France's continued participation in air raids against Islamic State in Iraq. One of last week's killers cited France's military strikes against Muslims as a motivation for his acts."The response is inside and outside France. Islamic State is a terrorist army with fighters from everywhere ... it is an international army that has to be wiped out and that is why we are part of the coalition," Le Drian told Europe 1 radio.(Additional reporting by Mark John, John Irish and Dominique Vidalon; writing by Mark John; editing by Giles Elgood)

Jews slain in Paris attacks arrive in Israel for burial-AFP-jan 13,15-yahoonews

Jerusalem (AFP) - The bodies of four French Jews killed in an Islamist attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris arrived in Israel early Tuesday ahead of a funeral in Jerusalem, an airport official said. The four were among 17 people gunned down in Paris during three days of bloodshed that shook France to the core and sent shock waves through its Jewish community, the third largest in the world.Yoav Hattab, Philippe Braham, Yohan Cohen and Francois-Michel Saada were, at the kosher supermarket in eastern Paris on Friday shortly before the start of the Jewish sabbath when it was attacked by Islamist gunman Amedy Coulibaly. All four were shot dead and another 15 people taken hostage by Coulibaly before police stormed the building, killing him.Coulibaly had links to the two Islamic extremists behind the massacre of 12 people at the Paris offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo two days earlier.Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he had agreed to a request from the families that the victims be buried in Jerusalem. They will be laid to rest in a joint funeral at the sprawling Givat Shaul cemetery on the city's western outskirts at 1000 GMT.Among those taking part in the ceremony will be Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and opposition leader Isaac Herzog, along with other Israeli ministers and officials.Members of Israel's French-speaking community were also due to attend.Members of the general public are expected to turn up in large numbers, with police saying free buses would be provided from a car park about two kilometres (1.25 miles) away while access to the site would be closed to private traffic. The four bodies were released from the forensic institute in Paris on Monday and flown to Israel, where they arrived at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv on an El Al flight shortly after 4:30 am (0230 GMT), Israel Airports Authority spokesman Ofer Lefler wrote in a text message.El Al, Israel's national carrier, said the victims' families were also on the flight. For many, the supermarket attack brought back memories of another deadly shooting in the southern French city of Toulouse in March 2012 when Islamist gunman Mohamed Merah shot dead three young children and a teacher at a Jewish school. All four were flown to Israel where they were buried in the same Jerusalem cemetery where the victims from the latest shooting will also be laid to rest.

- Fear factor -

The latest deadly violence has only served to further rattle the Jewish community in France, which numbers 500,000 to 600,000 people. It comes in the wake of a string of events that have created a growing sense of insecurity that began with the 2006 death of a 23-year-old Jewish man after he was kidnapped and tortured in a housing estate south of Paris. But it was the Toulouse shooting that set off a wave of French immigration to Israel that has not stopped, with numbers hitting a record high last year of 6,600 people. And many believe the Paris slayings will only accelerate the trend.Israel was quick to capitalise on the moment, with Netanyahu reaching out to French Jews to relocate to Israel, telling them it was their "home"."To all the Jews of France, all the Jews of Europe, I would like to say that Israel is not just the place towards which you pray, the state of Israel is your home," he said in remarks that were not well received in Paris.Anxious to calm fears, Paris has pulled out all the stops to reassure the community, pledging to deploy nearly 5,000 police and security forces to protect the 700 Jewish schools across the country and to boost security at other Jewish institutions." France without its Jews is not France," said Prime Minister Manuel Valls, standing outside the scene of Friday's attack."The Jews of France, for several years, have been frightened," he acknowledged.
"Today, we are all Charlie, all police officers, all the Jews of France," he said, using the slogan of solidarity with all those killed in last week's attacks.

Apparent Islamic State backers hack U.S. military Twitter feed-Reuters-By David Alexander and Jim Finkle-jan 13,15-yahoonews

(Reuters) - The Twitter and YouTube accounts for the U.S. military command that oversees operations in the Middle East were hacked on Monday by people claiming to be sympathetic toward the Islamic State militant group being targeted in American bombing raids."American soldiers, we are coming, watch your back, ISIS," the hackers posted on the U.S. Central Command Twitter feed, using an acronym for the hardline Islamist group, which has taken control of parts of Syria and Iraq.U.S. officials acknowledged that the incident in which the accounts were "compromised" for about 30 minutes was embarrassing but played down the impact. The FBI said it was investigating.Pentagon spokesman Army Colonel Steve Warren said the Defense Department "views this as little more than a prank, or as vandalism.""It's inconvenient, it's an annoyance but in no way is any sensitive or classified information compromised," Warren told a press briefing.Defense officials said in a statement that "operational military networks were not compromised and there was no operational impact."Islamic State forces have been targeted in air strikes by the United States and international partners."In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the CyberCaliphate continues its CyberJihad," the Central Command Twitter feed said after being hacked. The Twitter account published a list of generals and addresses associated with them, titled "Army General Officer Public Roster (by rank) 2 January 2014."Subsequent posts read, "Pentagon Networks Hacked! China Scenarios" and "Pentagon Networks Hacked. Korean Scenarios."Central Command said it was notifying Pentagon and law enforcement authorities about the potential release of "personally identifiable information" and work to make sure the people "potentially affected" are notified quickly.White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during a press briefing that the hacking was "something that we take seriously." But Earnest added, "There's a pretty significant difference between what is a large data breach and the hacking of a Twitter account."Even as the hacking was taking place, President Barack Obama on Monday announced new proposals aimed at bolstering American cybersecurity after high-profile hacking incidents including one against Sony Pictures Entertainment that U.S. officials blamed on North Korea.Several current and former U.S. security and intelligence officials said until now they had never heard of the CyberCaliphate. Some of the officials expressed skepticism at the group’s skills and capabilities."Hacking a Twitter is about the equivalent of spray-painting a subway car," a former senior U.S. intelligence official said. But the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, Republican Michael McCaul of Texas, called the incident "severely disturbing.""Assaults from cyber-jihadists will become more common unless the administration develops a strategy for appropriately responding to these cyberattacks, including those like the North Korea attack against Sony," McCaul said.

REVIEW OF DOCUMENTS

Reuters reviewed some of the documents released by the hackers but could not immediately identify any that appeared to contain information that compromised national security. Some of the documents were easily found using Google searches. After the hacking, the heading of the Central Command Twitter account showed a figure in a black-and-white head scarf and the words "CyberCaliphate" and "I love you ISIS."Central Command's YouTube account featured videos posted by the U.S. military of air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq. It was hacked to add two videos titled "Flames of War ISIS Video" and "O Soldiers of Truth Go Forth."Some of the slides posted on the Twitter account by the hackers apparently were created by Lincoln Laboratory, a federally funded research center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that studies national security problems.Lincoln Lab did not immediately respond to questions about the background and sensitivity of the slides, some of which dealt with intelligence and reconnaissance that might be needed in a conflict scenario involving China.Central Command is based at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida and handles American military operations covering the Middle East and Central Asia. Central Command oversaw the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and is managing the U.S. air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. In what proved to be a bit of bad timing, the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center chose earlier on Monday to join Twitter. It made a joke in its first tweet: "Up to 292 followers so far and not hacked yet."(Additional reporting by Mark Hosenball, Ryan McNeill, Phil Stewart, Andrea Shalal, Roberta Rampton, Doina Chiacu and David Brunnstrom; Writing by Will Dunham; Editing by Grant McCool and Toni Reinhold)
