Air India grounds pilots over fight in cockpit: reports-AFP-apr 6,15-yahoonews

Air India -- which has not reported an annual profit since 2007 -- has been hit by a string of technical glitches and other embarrassing incidents, including staff turning up late for flights.Struggling state-run carrier Air India has grounded two of its pilots after a fight erupted between the pair just before takeoff, reports said Monday. The co-pilot allegedly assaulted the captain inside the cockpit as they were preparing the passenger plane for takeoff from the Indian tourist city of Jaipur to New Delhi on Sunday night, the Hindustan Times newspaper said. The co-pilot was irritated by his superior's request to write down critical information for the flight, such as the number of passengers on board, take off weight and fuel uptake, the Times Of India reported."The co-pilot took offence at this and reportedly beat up the captain," the newspaper said, quoting unnamed sources."In the larger interest of the airline the commander decided to go ahead with the flight and flew to Delhi," the daily added. The airline denied any violence took place, saying there was only a verbal argument between the pair, according to the Press Trust of India."There were only heated exchanges between the commander and co-pilot over some issue. We have already derostered the two pilots pending an enquiry," an Air India spokesman told the news agency. The carrier could not be reached for comment.Air India -- which has not reported an annual profit since 2007 -- has been hit by a string of technical glitches and other embarrassing incidents, including staff turning up late for flights. Many airlines have introduced a rule requiring two crew in the cockpit at all times following the crash of a Germanwings plane last month. The co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately smashed the plane into the French Alps after locking the captain out of the cockpit, killing all 150 people on board.

Lufthansa says not obligated to report crash pilot's medical record-Reuters-apr 6,15-yahoonews

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Lufthansa said on Monday it was not required to inform German aviation authorities about Andreas Lubitz's former depression because he qualified as a pilot before stricter reporting rules went into effect in 2013.Lubitz, a co-pilot at Lufthansa's budget division Germanwings, is believed to have deliberately crashed a plane into the French Alps and killed 150 people. The question of what Lufthansa knew about any psychiatric problems may be a factor in its liability in the crash. Germany's Allianz estimates that insurers will end up paying $300 million in claims and costs related to the crash.Lubitz broke off pilot training for several months in 2009. When he resumed his training, he told the Lufthansa pilot instructors by email he had overcome a period of severe depression. He was first certified to fly commercial planes in 2012.Under European regulations, pilots with psychiatric conditions should be referred to the licensing authority by aeromedical examiners, who may then decide to restrict the pilot’s licence. The Luftfahrt bundesamt (LBA), the relevant German authority, on Sunday said it had "no information at all" before the crash about Lubitz's depression.Lufthansa said that a provision in the new regulation, introduced in Germany in April 2013, safeguarded certain pre-existing fit-to-fly certificates and medical certificates issued by specialized aviation doctors.Aeromedical centers or aviation doctors could therefore issue extensions to such medical certificates even after the new rules came into effect, the airline said."A general and separate duty to refer to the LBA did not therefore arise as a result of the change in the legal position," Lufthansa said.(Reporting by Kirsti Knolle; Editing by Larry King)

EU found 'issues' with German aviation regulator-Reuters-April 5, 2015 12:01 PM-yahoonews

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A European regulator has found "issues" with Germany's aviation authority in a regular review of air safety enforcement, the European Commission said. Its statement did not say when the review was carried out. But the Wall Street Journal said the Commission told Berlin in November "to remedy the long-standing problems" - months before last week's Germanwings crash that killed all 150 people aboard.Separately, the aviation authority, the Luftfahrtbundesamt (LBA), told Reuters on Sunday that it did not know about co-pilot Andreas Lubitz's medical background prior to the crash.Parent company Lufthansa has said Lubitz told officials at an airline training school he had gone through a period of severe depression in the past, raising questions over whether medical checks of crew members by the safety regulators and airlines are rigorous enough.EU officials found that the LBA had a lack of staff, which could have limited its ability to carry out checks on planes and crew, such as medical checks, the Journal reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. It said it was unclear whether the deficiencies identified at LBA were factors in the crash, however.Vetting of airline crew is in the spotlight after the budget airline flight crashed in the French Alps. French prosecutors say they believe Lubitz crashed the plane deliberately."On the basis of EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) recommendations, the Commission has addressed the issues to Germany to require compliance. Germany's replies are currently being assessed," the Commission spokesman said in the statement, emailed out on Saturday."All EU member states have findings and this is a normal and regular occurrence. It is part of a continuous system of oversight: findings are followed by corrective action, similar to an audit process," the Commission spokesman said, without specifying EASA's findings in Germany. The spokesman was not immediately available for further comment.A spokeswoman for the LBA said EASA's audits of national aviation authorities such as the LBA took place several times a year. She said the LBA had answered a single-figure number of criticisms leveled at it during the audits and those responses were now being assessed by EASA.

LUBITZ

Asked whether Lufthansa's medical centers had informed the regulators about Lubitz's condition, Lufthansa said on Sunday it would not comment given the ongoing investigations.German state prosecutors have said a computer found in Lubitz's home revealed searches on how to commit suicide as well as on cockpit doors and safety precautions related to them.On Sunday German newspaper Bild am Sonntag said, without naming its sources, that investigators had found Lubitz used the username "Skydevil" to log on to the computer and had recently done Internet searches on "bipolarity", "manic depression" as well as on "migraines", "impaired vision" and "acoustic trauma".Bild had previously said that documents available to investigators had revealed Lubitz said he was in a car crash at the end of 2014 and had complained of resulting trauma and vision problems. The public prosecutors' office in Duesseldorf was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters. French air accident authority BEA has said its investigation into the Germanwings crash would study "systemic weaknesses" that might have led to the disaster, including psychological profiling.(Reporting by Foo Yun Chee; Additional reporting by Michelle Martin and Victoria Bryan; Writing by Maria Sheahan; Editing by Alison Williams and Hugh Lawson)
