Netanyahu: Those Who Want Divided Jerusalem 'Don't Live Here'-Netanyahu vows to keep Jerusalem united in special Cabinet meeting.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 5/19/2015, 2:03 PM-ISRAEL NATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu held a special Cabinet meeting at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on Tuesday, in honor of Jerusalem Day."I remember how I came here as a youth," he began. "Since then there has been dramatic development, of course, and this magnificent cultural institution has been established the fiftieth anniversary of which we are celebrating.""This institution reflects three things: First, it shows our link to the land in the most dramatic exhibit, one of humanity's most important archaeological finds – the Dead Sea Scrolls," he continued. "While there are also many other finds that teach about our connection to our land, this exhibit, given its cultural and historical significance, is without peer.""The second thing that we see here is the great cultural treasure of the Jewish People in the country and around the world," he said. "Of course, this symbolizes our contribution to humanity.""The third thing that we see here is the culture of humanity as a whole as seen in amazing artistic and archaeological exhibits that also, perhaps, find expression in the fact that there is an exhibit here about the brief history of humankind," he added. "It is based on a provocative and interesting book that was written – I believe – by a professor here in Israel.""These three things, I note them in order to how the great difference between the cultural flowering, the cultural freedom and the cultural creativity in the State of Israel and what is happening around us – the destruction of cultural treasures, the destruction of the idea of freedom, and the physical destruction of people in an effort to destroy ideas, by Islamic fanatics," he continued, referring to Islamic State (ISIS)'s systemic destruction of Syrian cities and landmarks. "We promote culture at home and defend ourselves and – in my opinion – humanity as a whole from outside threats."Netanyahu then turned to Jerusalem's mayor, Nir Barkat, who was also present."This is connected to continuing to deal with Jerusalem, Mr. Mayor," he said. "Together we are working on great momentum in many areas and in many cultural institutions, and in the highway to Jerusalem.""Everyone sees this," he continued. "You see this as you travel here, and not just to Jerusalem, to around it, in its accessibility and in the railway that we are laying through the hills.""This is the development that we are advancing in the heart of Jerusalem, in its neighborhoods, including those on its outskirts, and there is still much to do," he concluded. "I am certain that we will hear from you. I would like to congratulate you on this important effort and also tell you that we will persist on this, with all government ministers."The Prime Minister then addressed the key issues of Jerusalem itself, speaking hours after he sparred with Opposition Leader Yitzhak Herzog (Labor) over keeping Jerusalem united."We will make several important decisions today about the development of Jerusalem just as we always do on its festive day, on the day of its liberation," he said. "We do not wish to go backwards and those speak with nostalgia about those days apparently do not live here.""We will not go back to a divided city, a torn city, a city with barbed wire fences and snipers on the walls. This will not happen and we will see to it that it does not happen," he continued. "This is not to say that there are no problems or tasks – there are many, there is also distress. We want to provide solutions and we will continue to develop it at the same pace that we see around us."Netanyahu also briefly addressed the issue of Ethiopian Israelis, who once again demonstrated in Tel Aviv Monday night."Today the Cabinet will appoint several ministerial committees," he said. "We have much work to do.""I have asked to form a ministerial committee under my leadership to deal with the plight of Israeli citizens of Ethiopian descent," he added. "They deserve equal treatment, they have rights and we will see to it that they enjoy these rights like all Israeli citizens."

Netanyahu: I Support a Two-State Solution-Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu emphatic over two-state solution in meeting with EU's Frederica Mogherini.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 5/20/2015, 9:21 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on Wednesday, for discussions over peace talks and the situation in the Middle East."This is the first meeting we’ve had since I formed the new government," Netanyahu began. "And I take this opportunity to reiterate Israel's commitment to peace, and my commitment to peace."
"Over the last few weeks, we’ve taken some concrete tangible steps to benefit the Palestinian population," he continued. "We’ve taken economic steps, added measures for reconstruction and development and ensuring ongoing humanitarian support. We’ll continue with those practical steps, but at the same time we will continue to work towards peace.""Israel wants peace," he emphasized. "I want peace. We want a peace that would end the conflict once and for all. My position has not changed."Netanyahu then stated that he supports a two-state solution, i.e. the creation of a Palestinian state."I don’t support a one state solution – I don't believe that’s a solution at all," he said. "I support the vision of two states for two peoples – a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state, and I look forward to discussing with you how we can advance that vision forth in a practical, secure and responsible way. I know that you share our goal and we see you as a friend who can help advance it."

He then shifted focus to Iran.

"But if I look around at our region and the world, the most dangerous enemy of peace is Iran," Netanyahu stated. "Iran is arming and training Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, and Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Iran is opening a third terror front against Israel in the Golan and it is pursuing its nuclear program, which I believe poses the greatest threat to the region and to the world.""I’m afraid the Lausanne program will not block Iran's path to the bomb," he continued. "Iran's emerging deal with the world powers facilitates and legitimizes Iran's continued development of the capabilities of forming nuclear weapons.""And by prematurely easing sanctions, the deal will give Iran many billions of dollars with which to fund its aggression and its worldwide terror campaign.""Because of Lausanne, the sanctions are already eroding," he added. "In recent weeks, Airbus aircraft have been sold to Iran in direct violation of the sanctions.""If pressure is being lifted today, what leverage will remain to ensure that Iran complies tomorrow when there is no pressure when the sanctions are removed?," he said. "And the answer, the honest answer is: nothing. Nothing will be left to ensure that Iran complies with the deal or that Iran ceases its aggression and its terror.""If we want to know what will happen with Iran as a result of this deal, just look at what happened with North Korea as a result of that deal," he noted. "Despite the inspections and the despite the commitments, North Korea became a nuclear power.""Just this week, North Korea announced that it has succeeded in miniaturizing a nuclear weapon," he elaborated. "I think the international community is about to make the same mistake with Iran as it did with North Korea. And I’m afraid Lausanne does exactly that.""The peace and security of the region and the world demand that we insist on a better deal," he concluded. "And it’s not too late to do so."Netanyahu concluded with a message of hope. "These are formidable challenges," he said. "They’ve never deterred us.""We know that Europe has undergone great challenges, great transformations in the previous century, and has shown great results from this and great abilities to overcome travail and create a better future for all its people – a future and a presence of peace and security and prosperity," he continued. "And that’s what I hope that we can discuss and work together to achieve. Peace, security and prosperity for all our people, for all our neighbors.""The efforts of the international community concerning Iran are intended to achieve greater security and ensure that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons," Mogherini responded. "I welcome your commitment to peace. The European Union is interested in peace and security and therefore ready to help resumption of negotiations."

PA, Hamas Blast Netanyahu Over Comments on United Jerusalem-Palestinian Authority and Hamas condemn Israeli Prime Minister for saying Jerusalem will never be divided again.By Elad Benari-First Publish: 5/19/2015, 6:14 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s pledge during Jerusalem Day that the capital will never be divided again was not well accepted by Palestinian Arabs.“I pledge that as Prime Minister I will continue to develop the city. The city was united, and will never be divided again,” Netanyahu said at the Jerusalem Day celebration at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva on Sunday. He made similar comments on Monday during a special Knesset session in honor of Jerusalem Day, saying Jerusalem will remain united regardless of any future negotiations with the PA."Jerusalem will not be divided again, it will not return to becoming a battlefield and a city of storybooks," Netanyahu said, adding, "We are building all over the city, including in the Arab neighborhoods. We do not build in Jerusalem to confront the international community, we do it responsibly and judiciously and that is our natural right."Later Monday, both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Hamas terrorist movement slammed Netanyahu over his remarks, according to the IANS news agency.Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas, said in a press statement that Netanyahu's remarks contradict UN resolutions and violate international conventions."There will be no peace or settlement in the Middle East without having east Jerusalem as the capital of Palestinian state," Abu Rudeineh declared, according to IANS.He also slammed earlier remarks made by an Israeli minister in Netanyahu's cabinet, who stated that the Jews would soon pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem."Such remarks will lead to a big fire that will be very hard to control either by the Arabs or the Muslims all over the world," warned Abu Rudeineh.Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in an emailed press statement that Netanyahu's remarks that Jerusalem would not be divided "shows the failure of the so-called peace process"."Talking about the resumption of the so-called peace talks with the Israeli occupation while these remarks are mad is like thirsty people looking for water in the desert," Abu Zuhri said, according to IANS.Recently, Israel approved construction of 900 homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, a haredi neighborhood in the eastern part of the capital. The European Union later criticized the Israeli plans, saying “Israel's determination to continue its settlement policy despite the urging of the international community not only threatens the viability of the two state solution but also seriously calls into question its commitment to a negotiated agreement with the Palestinians.”The State Department in Washington also condemned the move, calling it "disappointing" and "damaging".

Palestinian car rams two Israeli police, driver shot dead-AFP-may 20,15-yahoonews

Jerusalem (AFP) - Two Israeli policewomen were injured in annexed east Jerusalem on Wednesday when they were hit by a car driven by a Palestinian who was then shot dead, police said.It was the latest in a string of lone-wolf attacks by Palestinians using cars to ram pedestrians or police, a trend which began in Jerusalem in October but has also spread to the West Bank. The incident took place in A-Tur on the Mount of Olives, with police spokeswoman Luba Samri saying the driver veered off the road and struck two border police officers, both of them female. They had earlier been identified as male officers."Another border policeman opened fire at the terrorist and neutralised him," Samri said, confirming that the driver had died. The two policewomen were moderately injured and taken to different hospitals in the city, she said. The driver was identified by relatives as 41-year-old Imran Abu Dheim from the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Jabal Mukaber."We're absolutely stunned by what's happened," a cousin of the driver told AFP, describing him as a very quiet man with five adult children."It was an accident and when he tried to reverse, they killed him," he said, citing eyewitnesses.Israel seized the eastern Arab sector of the city during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community. The Palestinians want east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Israeli prime minister calls off West Bank bus segregation-Associated Press By JOSEF FEDERMAN-MAY 20,15-YAHOONEWS

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday canceled a plan that would have banned Palestinian laborers from riding on the same buses with Jewish settlers in the West Bank, just hours after it was announced — an embarrassing about-face that reflected the tensions enveloping Israel's new government. The inauspicious start for Netanyahu's hard-line government illustrated the difficulties that loom as it tries to advance a pro-settler agenda in the face of rising global outrage and domestic criticism.
The reversal came as the European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, was in town. The EU has taken a tough stance against settlements built on lands claimed by the Palestinians. As the bus plan was unveiled, Israeli critics across the political spectrum derided it as racist, with one opposition politician comparing it to "apartheid." Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, a member of Netanyahu's Likud Party, called the plan "unthinkable" and said there had been "great damage" to Israel.Netanyahu's new coalition, which was sworn into office last week, is dominated by settler sympathizers, and the busing plan, launched late Tuesday on a trial basis, had sought to separate settlers and Palestinians from traveling together through the West Bank. The plan's mastermind, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, said it was connected solely to security. The settlers had complained of safety concerns and alleged harassment of female riders by Arab passengers." Every normal country is allowed, and especially in our security situation, to inspect those who enter and exit," Yaalon said, denying any racist intentions. "That is what this is about and nothing else."But after the public uproar, Netanyahu told Yaalon it was "unacceptable" and the two decided to freeze the plan, an official in the prime minister's office said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was discussing internal communications. The official would not say when Netanyahu became aware of the plan or explain why he opposed it.Thousands of Palestinians are permitted to enter Israel for work each day from the West Bank, usually to work in construction and other menial jobs. They typically take Palestinian shuttle buses or private transportation to checkpoints before dawn, and cross into Israel after a security check. But when they return home, they don't need to go through the checkpoints and many take Israeli settler buses from Israel straight to the West Bank to save time. The proposed change would have forced them to return home through the same checkpoint they entered and barred them from traveling back on buses alongside Israelis."We work on their houses. How do they want to prevent us from using buses?" said Mohammed Shatara, a Palestinian worker from the West Bank city of Nablus, as he crossed through the Eyal checkpoint. "We are human like them and this decision is racist."Netanyahu's quick action reflected Israeli concerns about the country's image, which already is under pressure after years of stalled peace efforts and continued settlement construction.Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog called the bus plan "a stain on the face of the country and its citizens." Writing on his Facebook page, he said, "It adds unnecessary oil to the bonfire of hate against Israel in the world.""This is how apartheid looks," said Zehava Galon, leader of the dovish Meretz party.Rivlin, whose ceremonial post is meant to serve as a moral compass for the country, commended Netanyahu for scrapping the plan. "It is important we remember that our sovereignty obligates us to prove our ability to live side by side," Rivlin said.Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war, and Palestinians claim the territory as part of a future state. Some 350,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank, alongside more than 2 million Palestinians. The international community considers the settlements illegal or illegitimate.Wednesday's uproar gave a glimpse of what could lie ahead for Netanyahu and his new government. The Israeli premier angered the United States and other key allies during the election campaign in March by saying he would not allow the establishment of a Palestinian state on his watch. Although he later tried to backtrack, the U.S. has reacted with skepticism. With just a one-seat majority in the parliament, Netanyahu finds himself dependent on the pro-settler Jewish Home party as well as hard-liners inside Likud. These hard-liners support further settlement construction, and their opposition to peacemaking with the Palestinians has set the stage for likely clashes with Israel's Western allies. At a joint appearance, neither Netanyahu nor Mogherini mentioned the failed bus plan. Mogherini stressed the close ties between Israel and Europe and assured Netanyahu that Europe is committed to preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. But she also restated Europe's support for the establishment of a Palestinian state before entering a private meeting with Netanyahu. Some EU countries are pushing for settlement products to be labeled if they are sold in Europe.Alon Ben David, an Israel TV commentator on defense affairs, criticized the country's leaders for being out of touch with international opinion."You really don't need binoculars today to see the political tsunami that is making its way to Israel's shores from Europe," he told Channel 10 TV.Israeli civil rights groups lauded Netanyahu's reversal but criticized the government for even considering the plan.Sarit Michaeli, spokeswoman for B'Tselem, a human rights group, said the proposal drew attention to broader policies of separation and discrimination in the West Bank.Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank are subject to two sets of laws, different rules for land development and in some cases, even travel on separate roads, she said. Israeli settlers are permitted to vote in Israeli elections, while Palestinians are not."Even though this specific issue was put on hold, actually separation, segregation and discrimination have been around for a long time," she said.___Associated Press writers Ian Deitch in Jerusalem and Eyad Moghrabi at the Eyal checkpoint contributed to this report.

UN says will engage Israel on 'realistic options' for talks-Associated Press By CARA ANNA-MAY 20,15-YAHOONEWS

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations' new Middle East envoy said Tuesday that he and the U.N. secretary-general will engage Israel's new government to explore "realistic options" for a return to talks with the Palestinians aimed at a two-state solution within a reasonable time frame.Nikolay Mladenov also used his first briefing to the U.N. Security Council to remind Israel that settlement activity is illegal under international law and to call on Israel's government to stop such actions. The international community is looking for ways to revive talks after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said shortly before his re-election in March that he would not allow the establishment of a Palestinian state on his watch.A French-proposed council resolution setting a framework for negotiations has been on hold as Israel's new government formed. It likely will see little progress until world powers complete nuclear talks with Iran by a deadline they have set for the end of June.Even if that text moves forward, the United States, Israel's closest ally, has traditionally used its veto power as a permanent council member to block resolutions on the issue that it considers unbalanced. Two decades of talks brokered mainly by the United States have failed to produce a two-state solution. The latest effort fell short last year after nine months of negotiations. Gaps between Israeli and Palestinian positions remain vast.Frustrated by the stalled progress, the Palestinians in April officially joined the International Criminal Court in hopes of prosecuting Israel for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 50-day Gaza conflict last year.ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda this month told The Associated Press that prosecutors also will look at other issues, potentially including Israel's settlement construction on occupied Palestinian lands.Mladenov on Tuesday called for Israel's new government to freeze settlement activity and take other "credible steps" to help talks with the Palestinians resume."The coming period will be critical to the future of the peace process," he said, adding that any agreement will require a regional solution and "greater engagement with key Arab states."
