U.S. stocks ended Friday's session lower, but the main indexes recorded a fifth straight week of gains and booked the largest monthly gain in four years. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.48% closed 10.05 points, or 0.5%, lower at 2,079.36 but were up 0.2% over the week. For the month, the benchmark index gained 8.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.52% fell 92 points, or 0.5%, to 17,663.54 but rose 0.1% over the week. The blue-chip index gained 8.5% over the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.40% ended the day down 20.53 points, or 0.4%, at 5,053.75, but was up 0.4% on the week. Over the month, the tech-heavy index gained 9.4%.

Miami (AFP) - On the hunt for alien worlds that might support life, NASA's unmanned Cassini spacecraft has survived its closest-ever dive through the icy spray coming from Saturn's moon Enceladus.The flyby took place Wednesday at 11:22 am (1522 GMT), NASA said.The probe skimmed 30 miles (49 kilometers) above the moon's southern polar region, sampling and collecting data on the spray that is believed to emanate from a subterranean ocean.While the spacecraft is not equipped to detect life, scientists hope that the pass will give them a better understanding of what is contained in the icy spray, how much there is, and if conditions might be hospitable to life.The first images are expected in the next 24-48 hours, NASA said."Mission controllers established two-way communication with the spacecraft this afternoon and expect it to begin transmitting data from the encounter this evening," NASA said in a statement late Wednesday.The tiny moon orbiting the sixth planet from the sun stunned scientists when they discovered it had an icy plume in 2005.After years of observations, NASA announced earlier this year that Enceladus definitely has a subterranean ocean, widening the search for alien life in our solar system.The $3.26 billion mission is a joint project by the US space agency, European space agency and Italian space agency.Cassini is the first spacecraft to orbit Saturn, and it has been circling the planet since 2004.

Shell reported $7.9 billion in charges, including $2.6 billion for Alaska and $2 billion related to the decision to cancel the Carmon Creek project in Alberta, Canada.Excluding one-time items and fluctuations in the value of inventories, the company said profit dropped to $1.8 billion, from $5.8 billion a year earlier, reflecting the plunge in oil prices."Shell's integrated business and our performance drive are helping to mitigate the impact of low oil prices on the bottom line in what is a difficult environment for the industry today," CEO Ben van Beurden said.Energy companies are struggling to adjust to an age of lower prices after oil dropped to a six-year low in August. U.S. stocks ended Friday's session lower, but the main indexes recorded a fifth straight week of gains and booked the largest monthly gain in four years. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.48% closed 10.05 points, or 0.5%, lower at 2,079.36 but were up 0.2% over the week. For the month, the benchmark index gained 8.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.52% fell 92 points, or 0.5%, to 17,663.54 but rose 0.1% over the week. The blue-chip index gained 8.5% over the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.40% ended the day down 20.53 points, or 0.4%, at 5,053.75, but was up 0.4% on the week. Over the month, the tech-heavy index gained 9.4%.

Miami (AFP) - On the hunt for alien worlds that might support life, NASA's unmanned Cassini spacecraft has survived its closest-ever dive through the icy spray coming from Saturn's moon Enceladus.The flyby took place Wednesday at 11:22 am (1522 GMT), NASA said.The probe skimmed 30 miles (49 kilometers) above the moon's southern polar region, sampling and collecting data on the spray that is believed to emanate from a subterranean ocean.While the spacecraft is not equipped to detect life, scientists hope that the pass will give them a better understanding of what is contained in the icy spray, how much there is, and if conditions might be hospitable to life.The first images are expected in the next 24-48 hours, NASA said."Mission controllers established two-way communication with the spacecraft this afternoon and expect it to begin transmitting data from the encounter this evening," NASA said in a statement late Wednesday.The tiny moon orbiting the sixth planet from the sun stunned scientists when they discovered it had an icy plume in 2005.After years of observations, NASA announced earlier this year that Enceladus definitely has a subterranean ocean, widening the search for alien life in our solar system.The $3.26 billion mission is a joint project by the US space agency, European space agency and Italian space agency.Cassini is the first spacecraft to orbit Saturn, and it has been circling the planet since 2004.

LONDON (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell reported a third quarter loss of $7.4 billion Thursday as it re-organized and cancelled projects, including drilling in Alaska, to cope with the plunge in oil prices.The net loss compares with a profit of $4.5 billion in the same period last year. Shell reported $7.9 billion in charges, including $2.6 billion for Alaska and $2 billion related to the decision to cancel the Carmon Creek project in Alberta, Canada.Excluding one-time items and fluctuations in the value of inventories, the company said profit dropped to $1.8 billion, from $5.8 billion a year earlier, reflecting the plunge in oil prices."Shell's integrated business and our performance drive are helping to mitigate the impact of low oil prices on the bottom line in what is a difficult environment for the industry today," CEO Ben van Beurden said.Energy companies are struggling to adjust to an age of lower prices after oil dropped to a six-year low in August. Brent crude, the benchmark for North Sea oil, averaged $50.26 a barrel in the third quarter, down 51 percent from a year earlier.The drop is forcing companies to reconsider the economics of projects.Shell said it decided to discontinue work on the Carmon Creek thermal oil sands project because it "does not rank in its portfolio at this time."In Alaska, Shell had intended to access what the U.S. Geological survey estimated to be some 26 billion barrels of conventionally recoverable oil under Arctic waters. Companies including Buffalo Wild Wings and camera maker GoPro plunged after reporting weak earnings.SLOWDOWN: The U.S. economy cooled in the summer as businesses cut production of goods and drew down their inventories, which offset strength in consumer spending. The Commerce Department said gross domestic product grew at a rate of 1.5 percent. Analysts had forecast 1.7 percent.THE QUOTE: RBS senior economist Kevin Cummins said the report isn't a major warning sign. In his view, consumers are spending more money because gas prices have tumbled, and the labor market is doing well even though fewer people are in the workforce than in years past. While jobs reports for August and September showed reduced growth, Cummins expects to see better results in October."The domestic economy is in pretty healthy shape right now," Cummins said.THE SCORE: The Dow Jones industrial average fell 55 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,724 as of 1:45 p.m. Eastern. The agency later revised its magnitude from a preliminary 7.7 to 7.5.The death toll is set to rise as the most severely affected areas are very remote and communications have been cut off.In Pakistan, the death toll has risen to at least 300, in the northern mountainous areas.In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone, authorities said at least 179 people were known to have died, and more than 1,800 were injured.In Afghanistan, 73 people were reported dead and more than 300 were injured.Landslides were reported, and some of the affected regions could not immediately be contacted, authorities said. The quake came just days after rain fell in many parts of Afghanistan, potentially making mud-built dwellings vulnerable. The massive earthquake also triggered landslides in mountainous northern and northwestern Pakistan.
