Woman fails to save friend in Australian crocodile attack-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-yahoonews

BRISBANE, Australia - A woman struggled in vain to drag her friend from a crocodile's jaws off a northeast Australian beach, police said on Monday. The pair were in shallow water at Thornton Beach in the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park in Queensland state when the 46-year-old woman was taken by the crocodile late Sunday, Police Senior Constable Russell Parker said."Her 47-year-old friend tried to grab her and drag her to safety but she just wasn't able to do that," Parker told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.Police said the women were swimming in waist-deep water, while paramedics reported they were wading in knee-deep water when the crocodile struck.A rescue helicopter fitted with thermal imaging equipment failed to find any trace of the missing woman Sunday night, Parker said, with the search resuming Monday with a helicopter, boat and land-based search teams. The missing woman is from Lithgow in New South Wales state. The survivor from Cairns, 93 kilometres (58 miles) south of Thornton Beach, was taken to a hospital in Mossman suffering from shock and a graze to her arm inflicted as the crocodile brushed against her, Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Neil Noble said."The report that we have from the surviving woman is that they felt a nudge and her partner started to scream and then was dragged into the water," Noble told ABC.The two women might not have been aware that the area was well known as a crocodile habitat, Parker said. But Warren Enstch, who represents the area in the Australian Parliament, said the beach was beside a creek where tourism operators run crocodile-spotting tours. Enstch said the two tourists had to have seen plentiful crocodile warning signs in the region."You can't legislate against human stupidity," Entsch said. "If you go in swimming at 10 o'clock at night, you're going to get consumed."The attack occurred near where a 5-year-old boy was taken and killed by a 4.3-meter (14-foot) crocodile from a swamp in 2009 and a 43-year-old woman was killed by a 5-meter (16-foot) croc while swimming in a creek in 1985.Darwin-based crocodile expert Grahame Webb said while most crocodiles were found in rivers, swamps and other protected waterways, open beaches in northern Australia were not safe."There've been quite a lot of attacks off beaches and off coral reefs where people are snorkeling," Webb said.Crocodile numbers have boomed across Australia's northern tropics since they became a protected species under federal law in 1971, and they pose an increasing threat to humans.

Montreal homes extra vulnerable to ant invaders-[CBC]-May 30, 2016-yahoonews

Finding an ant in your home is usually nothing more than a mild annoyance, but this summer Montrealers may find their view of the pest changing for the worst. That's because ants are more common in many Montreal homes this year after a short winter allowed more of them than usual to survive.Sean Rollo from ORKIN Canada told CBC Montreal's Daybreak that the pest control company is already receiving a lot of calls about ants and are predicting a rough year ahead for invasions.Although ants in general may see a population boom this year, it's carpenter ants that are the biggest danger to homes, Rollo said.Carpenters are easily spotted because they are bigger than other ants. But catching them is tricky.Rollo said people usually don't find them until the wood in their home is already compromised by the bugs burrowing their way through it."Typically they appear if there is water damage in the house. The ants are usually a secondary concern," Rollo said. "In a way ants are an alarm system that indicates there's a problem with your house."-Ant proofing?-Carpenter ants are most attracted to wood that is soft because of water damage or in bathrooms where a lack of proper ventilation can cause wood to rot.The home invading pests can be hard to get rid of because even if they are eliminated from one part of the house, that site may only be a satellite nest. Finding the main nest can be extremely difficult.Adding strategic sealant and fixing water damage can help keep the carpenter ants away, Rollo said. He also suggested trimming any vines, which he says act as an ant highway."Ant-proof is a strong word [but] you can definitely make your home unattractive to ants," he said.

NATO urged to show stronger resolve on Russia, boost defence-[The Canadian Press]-Llazar Semini, The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

TIRANA, Albania - NATO's Parliamentary Assembly urged member nations Monday to stand up to Russia's military assertiveness as a senior official vowed to strengthen forces along the alliance's eastern borders.A unanimously approved declaration called on alliance members "to provide reassurance to those allies who feel their security is under threat, focusing on the eastern and southern flanks of the alliance."The declaration sought to strengthen conventional and nuclear deterrence measures, heighten NATO military preparedness, and boost co-operation with non-NATO members Sweden and Finland. All are expected objectives of the alliance's July 8-9 summit in Warsaw, where Polish leaders already have appealed for stronger NATO deployments in the east. The assembly president, American lawmaker Michael R. Turner, declared that "Russia's aggressiveness comes with a price" as he appealed to European partners to boost defence spending."Moscow has decided that its own interests are better served if it works against us rather than with us," said Turner, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio. "The challenge from Russia is real and serious."NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow said NATO would maintain dialogue with Russia "but there can be no return to 'business as usual' ... until Russia once again demonstrates respect for international law."As Vershbow spoke his superior, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, travelled to Warsaw to lay groundwork for two days of talks on the July summit.Vershbow said NATO members would seek to strengthen the alliance's defence capabilities and logistical support for other allies bordering Russia. He urged members to follow through on previous commitments to increase defence spending to at least 2 per cent of national economic output."I expect leaders at Warsaw to agree on an enhanced forward presence in the east of the alliance," he said. Such increased military forces would ensure, he said, "that an attack on any ally will be swiftly met by the forces from across the alliance, from both sides of the Atlantic."Monday's declaration noted, however, that NATO nations also should "continue to explore ways to reduce tensions with Russia and avoid miscalculations and incidents."About 250 lawmakers from 28 NATO member countries and partners gathered in the Albanian capital, Tirana, amid tight security for the three-day assembly, which concluded Monday. The lawmakers hailed Montenegro's recent invitation to become a full member and said they hoped eventually to offer membership to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Russian neighbour Georgia.___Associated Press reporter Monika Scislowska in Warsaw, Poland, contributed to this story.

China lashes out at US defence secretary criticisms-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

BEIJING, China - China on Monday lashed out at criticism from U.S. Defence Secretary Ashton Carter, accusing him of harbouring a Cold War mentality and saying Beijing has no interest in "playing a role in a Hollywood movie" of Washington's design.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters Carter's comment last week that China was creating a "Great Wall of self-isolation" was merely an attempt to provide cover for U.S. plans to deploy additional military forces to the Asia-Pacific region.Carter's remarks "laid bare the stereotypical U.S. thinking and U.S. hegemony," Hua said at a daily news briefing."Indeed, there are some in the U.S. who live physically in the 21st century, but whose minds are stuck in the in the Cold War era," she said."China has no interest in any form of Cold War, nor are we interested in playing a role in a Hollywood movie written and directed by certain U.S. military officials. However, China has no fear of and will counter any actions that threaten and undermine China's sovereignty and security," Hua said.In a commencement speech Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy, Carter said China wants and enjoys the benefits of free trade and a free internet, but sometimes chooses to restrict both. He said the U.S. also continues to be concerned about Beijing's actions in the disputed South China Sea, where Beijing has sought to strengthen its claim to almost the entire region by building new islands atop coral outcroppings and adding airstrips, harbours and military infrastructure. The United States is committed to upholding the freedom of navigation and commerce, and peaceful resolution of disputes, Carter said."China's actions (in the South China Sea) challenge fundamental principles, and we can't look the other way," Carter said.

Turkey says it could seize IS stronghold with US-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

ISTANBUL - Turkey's foreign minister suggested his country could carry out joint military operations with the United States to oust the Islamic State group from Syria.Speaking in Antalya late Sunday, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that operation could "easily advance to Raqqa," the main IS bastion in Syria.American special operations forces and a coalition known as the Syria Democratic Forces have begun clearing areas north of Raqqa in preparation for an eventual assault on the city. A major player in the coalition is the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, which Turkey — unlike the United States — views as a terrorist organization.Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against IS and a Turkish air base is being used to launch bombing runs against IS.But the involvement of Kurdish factions in the anti-IS effort has strained U.S.-Turkish relations. According to Vatan newspaper's Monday edition, Cavusoglu criticized the U.S. for dealing with the political wing of the YPG and said it would be better off uniting forces with Turkey."Unfortunately the U.S. is entering a phase that is very dangerous for the future of Syria," said Cavusoglu. "We have warned them."The United States, Cavusoglu added, was not fulfilling its promises and had fallen behind on the delivery of HIMARS missiles which were due to arrive this month.HIMARS stands for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. Their delivery is now expected in August, according to the foreign minister."We are ready but instead of implementing the agreement, (U.S. soldiers) are going and wearing the patches of the YPG," he said.Images of U.S. special forces wearing the insignia of the Kurdish group while deployed in Syria sparked outrage among Turkish officials last week.In light of Turkey's sensitivities, American special operations troops have since been instructed to remove them.

Brother of Paris attacker on trial over militant training-[Reuters]-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

PARIS (Reuters) - Seven people went on trial in Paris on Monday accused of travelling to Syria to train as militant fighters, among them the brother of one of the militants who killed 130 people in the French capital last November. The seven, aged from 24 to 27, face up to 10 years in jail if found guilty of taking part in an Islamist recruitment network and receiving training in Syria from the Islamic State militant group. The accused, a gang of friends from eastern France, were part of a larger number who in December 2013 travelled to Syria, where two of them died. All but one of them returned to France in early 2014. The one who stayed behind was Foued Mohamed-Aggad, who took part in the three-man team that killed 90 people at the Bataclan concert hall during the multiple attacks in Paris. Two of the three killed themselves by exploding their suicide vests and another was shot dead by police.Foued's brother, Karim Mohamed-Aggad, is among the seven accused. The defendants initially told investigators they had believed they were going to Syria on a humanitarian mission. Several admitted to handling weapons but said they did so under duress. The group's defence team says the seven were duped and when they realised they had fallen into the hands of a militant network they looked for a way out."They were told they could be useful," said Martin Pradel, defence lawyer to one of the defendants, told Reuters ahead of the hearing. "Their mistake was to believe the propaganda."His colleague Xavier Nogueras said: "This is the trial of seven youths who came back after three months. That will allow us to highlight the difference between those who decided to come back and the one who stayed."(Reporting by Chine Labbe; Writing by Brian Love; Editing by Richard Lough and Alison Williams)

Tropical Depression Bonnie dissipates after heavy rains-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tropical Depression Bonnie and its heavy rains dissipated over South Carolina on Monday, as a wet Memorial Day holiday weekend comes to an end in the area. The depression fell apart early in the day about 45 miles north of Charleston, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm was expected to continue as an area of low pressure, moving northeast into North Carolina and sporadically spreading heavy rain, especially during the daylight hours, forecasters said. The main concern throughout the holiday weekend has been heavy rains and strong surf more than wind.Bonne dropped about 8 inches of rain in southern South Carolina on Sunday, closing the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 about 20 miles north of the Georgia state line for about 16 hours. The highway finally reopened around 1 a.m. Monday, and troopers reported the 10-mile backups caused by the detour had been cleared. The only possible death attributed to the storm is a missing swimmer off of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, just south of Wilmington.Rescuers plan to continue searching Monday for 21-year-old James Cameron of Graham, North Carolina. He disappeared while swimming with two friends Saturday evening in the rough surf. The friends made it back to shore safely, authorities said.Lifeguards in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina were warning people of dangerous rip currents, which can suddenly pull swimmers out to deep waters. Officials in Myrtle Beach put up the no swimming flags again Monday because conditions were just too rough.Bonnie formed Saturday, becoming the second tropical storm in the Atlantic to form before the official start of the hurricane season on Wednesday. Hurricane Alex struck the Azores in the far eastern Atlantic in January.

Four people killed in flooding and storms in southwestern Germany-[Reuters]-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

BERLIN (Reuters) - Three people have been killed in floods in the southwestern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and a young girl was killed by a train as she took shelter from the rain under a railway bridge.A man who was around 60 years old died in an underground car park which filled with water before he was able to escape, said Carsten Dehner, a spokesman at Baden-Wuerttemberg's interior ministry. In the town of Schwaebisch Gmuend, a fireman died as he tried to rescue another person, who then also died, Dehner said.Elsewhere in Baden-Wuerttemberg, local police said a 13-year-old girl who was probably seeking shelter under a railway bridge was hit and killed by an Intercity train. On Saturday, lightning strikes in northern France and southwest Germany left nine people seriously hurt.(Reporting by Michelle Martin; Editing by Toby Chopra)

Floods in Texas, Kansas leave at least 6 dead, 2 missing-[The Canadian Press]-Michael Graczyk, The Associated Press-May 30, 2016-YAHOONEWS

HOUSTON - Authorities in central Texas have found two more bodies along flooded streams, bringing the death toll from flooding in the state to six.It was unclear Sunday whether a body found in Travis County near Austin was one of the two people who had been missing in Texas. An 11-year-old boy was still missing in central Kansas, too.The latest flooding victim identified by authorities was a woman who died when the car she was riding in was swept from the street by the flooded Cypress Creek about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Kendall County sheriff's Cpl. Reid Daly said. The car, with three occupants, was in Comfort, about 45 miles north of San Antonio. The driver made it to shore, and a female passenger was rescued from a tree. But Daly said 23-year-old Florida Molima was missing until her body was found around 11 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles downstream. She became the sixth flood-related death in Texas over Memorial Day weekend. In Bandera, about 45 miles northwest of San Antonio, an estimated 10 inches of rain overnight led to the rescues of nine people. The rain caused widespread damage, including the collapse of the roof of the Bandera Bulletin, the weekly newspaper, KSAT-TV in San Antonio reported. Photos from the area showed campers and trailers stacked against each other, but no injuries were reported.Torrential rains caused heavy flash flooding in some parts of the U.S. over the last few days, and led to numerous evacuations in southeast Texas, including two prisons. But the threat of severe weather decreased in many places as the weekend wore on, though Tropical Depression Bonnie continued to bring rain and wind to North and South Carolina.Near Austin, a crew aboard a county STAR Flight helicopter found a body Sunday on the north end of a retention pond near the Circuit of the Americas auto racing track, which is close to where two people were reported to have been washed away by a flash flood early Friday, Travis County sheriff's spokesman Lisa Block said. The body still must be recovered and no identification had been made.To the southeast along the rain-swollen Brazos River near Houston, prison officials evacuated about 2,600 inmates from two prisons to other state prisons because of expected flooding, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said. Inmates in a low-level security camp at a third prison in the area were being moved to the main prison building, Clark said. All three prisons are in coastal Brazoria County, where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico."TDCJ officials continue to monitor the situation and are working with our state partners as the river level rises," Clark said, noting that additional food and water has been delivered to prisons that are getting the displaced inmates and sandbags have been filled and delivered to the prisons where flooding is anticipated. In Kansas, the search for the missing 11-year-old continued Sunday and expanded beyond the swollen creek he fell into Friday night, according to Wichita Fire Department battalion chief Scott Brown. "We are more in body-recovery mode than rescue," Brown said Saturday night.Four people died from flooding in rural Washington County, Texas, located between Austin and Houston, where more than 16.5 inches of rain fell in some places on Thursday and Friday. The bodies of two of them — both motorists who had gone missing — were found Saturday in different parts of the county, according to Judge John Brieden.Tropical Depression Bonnie reached the South Carolina coast early Sunday, bringing heavy rain and rough tides to an area packed with tourists for the Memorial Day weekend. Forecasters said up to 8 inches of rain had fallen in parts of southern South Carolina. About 3 inches of rain fell in Charleston in 24 hours and more was expected, according to the National Weather Service.___Associated Press writer Terry Wallace in Dallas contributed to this report.

Wynne apologizes for "brutalities" of residential school system in Ontario-[The Canadian Press]-May 30, 2016-yahoonews

TORONTO - Premier Kathleen Wynne has apologized on behalf of the Ontario government to First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities for the "brutalities" suffered at residential schools. The formal apology was part of the province's reaction to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which found that children were physically and sexually abused and died in numbers that would not have been tolerated in any school system.Wynne said Ontario wants to acknowledge "one of the most shameful chapters in Canadian history" and said the province will teach a new generation of students the truth about our shared history. She said residential schools set out to "take the Indian out of the child" by removing them from their homes and systematically stripping them of their languages, cultures laws and rights.Ontario will spend $250 million over three years to help understand the legacy of residential schools and to create what Wynne calls a culturally relevant and responsible justice system. The Truth and Reconciliation commission issued 94 recommendations such as reducing the number of aboriginal children in foster care and granting police greater independence to investigate crimes where government may be an interested party.Even as the premier was offering the formal apology in the legislature, leaders from the Grassy Narrows First Nation were in the Queen's Park media studio asking again for help dealing with mercury poisoning that has devastated their community.

New child benefit could pose pitfalls for divorced couples: Raitt-[thecanadianpress.com]-May 29, 2016-yahoonews

OTTAWA - The Liberal government's new child benefit could clog courts with divorced couples fighting over how much one spouse must pay in child support when the potentially lucrative payments start landing in just over one month, says Opposition finance critic Lisa Raitt. The Liberals' new $23-billion-a-year benefit will replace three different programs on July 1 with one income-tested payment to families each month.Unlike with the benefits being replaced — the universal child care benefit and the Canada child tax benefit —the government's budget and associated legislation doesn't give guidance about how divorced parents can split tax deductions, or calculations of spousal support payments.Raitt said the problem could affect some 1.2 million Canadians."Obviously they're going to have a point of view on whether or not they should be paying more or less child support and instead of clogging up the courts, this government owes (it to) them to give them some direction," Raitt said in a telephone interview."It's going to affect anybody's separation agreements, it's going to affect anyone's child support orders and there's silence on it (from the government). I don't think they've figured it out yet."The new child benefit will replace the monthly universal child care benefit with an income-tested payment that will start at $6,400 a year for a child five and under, and $5,400 a year for children six to 17. Only those families earning less than $30,000 a year will receive the full amount; the government will reduce payments as incomes rise. The government has been negotiating agreements with provinces to ensure the new benefit wouldn't adversely affect those receiving provincial social assistance. Those subsidies are income tested, meaning the more a family earns, the less they receive in subsidies. The government says the new benefit should lift 300,000 children out of poverty in its first year, and provide more money to nine out of 10 families.Critics still have questions about whether the new child benefit will have the same dampening effect on maternal employment rates that the universal child care benefit had as women opt to stay home so as not to earn too much money and lose out on their benefit or on their taxes."Officials have said there hasn't been a lot of analysis done on certain measures that the government has implemented," Raitt said."Every time you make one change there is ripple effects across either the economy or the social cohesion in the country and we just want to know how much work the Liberals did around it."The issue is expected to be a central fixture of questioning Monday when opposition MPs get three different chances to grill Finance Minister Bill Morneau about his first budget, and government spending documents. First he will face the daily question period, then go to the Commons' finance committee, and finally face the House of Commons as a whole in the evening for a detailed grilling in committee-of-the-whole.The focus is a departure from the months-long war of words over whether the Tories left the Liberals with a surplus and how the government intends to balance the budget at some point in the future. The Finance Department said last week that preliminary estimates show a deficit of $2 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, not including year-end adjustments and a $3.7-billion commitment to benefits for veterans. The Liberals argue the numbers support their view that the Tories left the books in the red; the Tories say the Liberals squandered the surplus left behind.

Trump: ‘Illegal immigrants are taken much better care of by this country than our veterans’-Dylan Stableford-Senior editor-May 29, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Donald Trump says people living in the United States illegally are being treated better than the nation’s military veterans.“In many cases, illegal immigrants are taken much better care of by this country than our veterans,” Trump said at the annual Rolling Thunder rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of thousands of bikers gathered to honor prisoners of war and service members missing in action. “We’re not going to allow that to happen any longer.”“We’re gonna rebuild our military,” he continued. “And we’re gonna take care of our veterans. Our veterans have been treated so badly in this country.”Trump — whose repeated assertions that his televised January fundraiser for veterans took in $6 million have been called into question in recent days — announced his campaign would be holding a press conference on Tuesday to disclose where, specifically, the donations went. Before the event, political observers wondered how the crowd would react to Trump in light of his controversial comments about Arizona Sen. John McCain, a former POW who Trump suggested is only considered a war hero because he was caught. But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was, for the most part, warmly received.“Do we love the bikers? Yes!” Trump said. “Some of these people are tough. And some of these guys, they’re rough. And I get out and I shake their hands, and I’ll tell you, there is love. There is love, and it’s an incredible feeling. And that’s why I wanted to be here today.”The billionaire real estate mogul reiterated his campaign promise to build a wall along the southern border — “a real wall,” he said — and have Mexico pay for it.“Not even a doubt,” he said.Near the end of a characteristically rambling 20-minute address, Trump said he thought the crowd would be similar in size to the one that listened to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963 — “where people would be lined up from here all the way to the Washington Monument” — but was disappointed by the turnout. The size-conscious candidate blamed security, claiming he saw “hundreds of thousands of people all along the highways” who weren’t able to get into the event.“We have by far the biggest rallies, far bigger than Bernie Sanders’,” Trump said. “But they don’t talk about it. I had a rally where we had 18,000 people, Bernie had seven [thousand]. With my rally, they said, ‘Donald Trump made a speech today, bah-bah-bah.‘ That was it. With Bernie’s rally, same time, they said, ‘Bernie Sanders had a tremendous crowd of 7,000.’ I said, ‘I had 11,000 people more than he did!’ They don’t mention it. And they won’t mention the kinds of massive crowds we have here today.”
