Hawaii Becomes First State to Put Gun Owners in FBI Database-[Time]-Rosalie Chan-June 25, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Hawaii passed a law making it the first state to put gun owners on a federal criminal record database and monitor them.Hawaii Governor David Ige signed the bill Thursday, which allows police to enroll firearms applicants and individuals who are registering their firearms into “Rap Back,” a Federal Bureau of Investigation database that monitors criminal activities by people under investigation or in positions of trust, Reuters reported. The law takes effect immediately. “Rap Back” allows Hawaii police to be notified when a Hawaii firearm owner is arrested anywhere in the U.S. In addition, the law allows Hawaii police to evaluate whether a firearm owner should continue owning a gun after being arrested. This move comes after a sit-in by Democrats to support gun control measures that would keep people on the no-fly list from buying a gun.Previously, Ige had signed a law that disqualifies people convicted of stalking and sexual assault from owning a gun and a law that requires firearm owners diagnosed with a mental, behavioral or emotional disorder to surrender their firearms.[Reuters]

Pope to Armenians: Never forget the genocide, but reconcile-[The Canadian Press]-Nicole Winfield And Avet Demourian, The Associated Press-June 25, 2016-yahoonews

YEREVAN, Armenia - The world should never forget or minimize the Ottoman-era slaughter of Armenians, Pope Francis declared Saturday even as he urged Armenians to infuse their collective memory with love so they can find peace and reconcile with Turkey.Turkey, though, didn't budge. In its first reaction to Francis' recognition of the 1915 "genocide," Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli called the comments "greatly unfortunate" and said they bore the hallmarks of the "mentality of the Crusades."Francis began his second day in Armenia by paying his respects at the country's imposing genocide memorial and greeting descendants of survivors of the 1915 massacres, who have been emboldened by his comments upon arrival that the slaughter of Armenians a century ago was a planned "genocide" meant to annihilate an entire people.Francis presented a wreath at the memorial and stood, head bowed, in silent prayer before an eternal flame as priests blessed him with incense and a choir sang haunting hymns."Here I pray with sorrow in my heart, so that a tragedy like this never again occurs, so that humanity will never forget and will know how to defeat evil with good," Francis wrote in the memorial's guest book. "May God protect the memory of the Armenian people. Memory should never be watered-down or forgotten. Memory is the source of peace and the future."Francis also greeted descendants of the 400 or so Armenian orphans taken in by Popes Benedict XV and Pius XI at the papal summer residence south of Rome in the 1920s. Also approaching Francis was Sosi Habeschyan, 68, and her sister; their mother was a genocide orphan adopted and raised by Danish missionary Maria Jacobsen, who worked in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and wrote about the massacre."A blessing has come down on the land of Mt. Ararat," said Andzhela Adzhemyan, a 35-year old refugee from Syria who was a guest at the memorial. "He has given us the strength and confidence to keep our Christian faith no matter what."Francis returned to the theme of memory during a Mass in Gyumri, where several thousand people gathered in a square for his only public Catholic Mass of his three-day visit to Armenia. Nestled in the rolling green hills and wildflower fields of northwestern Armenia, Gyumri has long been a cradle of Christianity, and Francis came to pay homage to its faith even in times of trial."Peoples, like individuals, have a memory," he told the crowd from the altar. "Your own people's memory is ancient and precious."Francis again raised the importance of memory at an evening prayer in Yerevan's Republic Square, which drew the largest crowds of his visit, some 50,000 according to Vatican estimates. With the patriarch of the Apostolic Church, Karekin II, by his side and President Serzh Sargsyan in the front row, Francis said even the greatest pain "can become a seed of peace for the future.""Memory, infused with love, becomes capable of setting out on new and unexpected paths, where designs of hatred become projects of reconciliation, where hope arises for a better future for everyone," he said.He specifically called for Armenia and Turkey to take up the "path of reconciliation" and said: "May peace also spring forth in Nagorno-Karabakh."The Vatican has long held up the landlocked nation of 3 million mostly Orthodox Christians as a bastion of faith and martyrdom in a largely Muslim region and the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301."We were saved by the Christian faith, which in the years of the genocide helped our grandfathers and great-grandfathers," 38-year-old Vardui Simonyan, a granddaughter of genocide survivors, said after the pope's visit to the genocide memorial. "The fact that one of the main people in Christendom is with us is inspiring."Upon his arrival Friday in the capital, Yerevan, Francis added the politically charged word "genocide" to his prepared text, listing the 1915 Armenian genocide alongside the Holocaust and Stalinism as the three great mass slaughters of the 20th century.Turkey rejects the term, saying the 1.5 million deaths cited by historians is an inflated figure and that people died on both sides as the Ottoman Empire collapsed amid World War I. When Francis first used it last year, Turkey withdrew its ambassador for 10 months and accused Francis of spreading lies.On Saturday, the deputy prime minister, Canikli, said the term "does not comply with the truth.""Everyone knows that. We all know it, the whole world knows it, and so do the Armenians," he added. In a largely Orthodox land where Catholics are a minority, Armenians have seemed genuinely honoured to welcome a pope who has long championed the Armenian cause from his time as an archbishop in Argentina and now as leader of the 1.2-billion strong Catholic Church."We have the memory of the genocide in our genes," said 45-year-old Alexander Rubenyan from Yerevan. "It used to be a gene of sadness, but with every visit of people like the pope the Armenian gene is becoming more alive and full of optimism."___Demourian reported from Yerevan, Armenia; AP writer Susan Frazer contributed from Ankara, Turkey.___Follow Nicole Winfield at www.twitter.com/nwinfield

West Virginia death toll at 23 in deadliest U.S. flooding this year-[By David Bailey]-June 25, 2016-YAHOONEWS

(Reuters) - West Virginia's governor on Saturday asked for a federal major disaster declaration for three counties devastated by the state's worst flooding in more than a century as the death toll rose to 23 and authorities stepped up search and rescue operations.Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said he made an expedited verbal request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to aid Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties, which were severely damaged by flooding that started with heavy rains on Thursday.Tomblin said the state would follow up with requests for other counties that also sustained significant damage. The scope of damage in those three counties allowed him to make the request immediately, he said in a statement.A FEMA team is expected to arrive on Saturday to assess the damage in West Virginia where more than 32,000 homes and businesses still were without power. The death toll in West Virginia is the highest in any state from flooding this year. At least 16 people, including nine U.S. soldiers, were killed in flooding in Texas earlier in June. [nL1N18V0R5]-Up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) of rain fell on Thursday in the mountainous state, sending torrents of water from rivers and streams through homes causing widespread devastation.Tomblin has declared a state of emergency in 44 of 55 counties and deployed 200 members of the West Virginia National Guard on Friday to help rescue efforts.Hundreds of people have been rescued and search and rescue teams were looking for more people on Saturday, said Tim Rock, spokesman for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management."We have lost almost entire towns in some cases," Rock said. "There are going to be a lot of rebuilding, a lot of people without homes, a lot of businesses destroyed."Some towns have been completely surrounded by water, hundreds of houses and buildings have been lost and at least hundreds of people forced to take emergency shelter, Rock said. The hardest-hit area was Greenbrier County in the southeast West Virginia, where 15 deaths have been reported and the heaviest rain fell, state officials said. The state medical examiner has confirmed 23 dead in the flooding across the state.West Virginia received one-quarter of its annual rainfall in a single day and multiple rivers surged to dangerous levels, including the Elk River, which broke a record at one stage that had stood since 1888.(Reporting by David Bailey in Minneapolis and Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas)

Elderly couple dead, 80 homes burn in California wildfire-[The Canadian Press]-Scott Smith And Brian Melley, The Associated Press-June 25, 2016-YAHOONEWS

LAKE ISABELLA, Calif. - A vast and voracious wildfire that has burned at least 80 homes in central California killed an elderly couple as they tried to flee, authorities said. The two were outside their house when they were overcome with smoke, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said at a Friday evening news conference on the fire that has burned nearly 47 square miles and forced the evacuation of 1,500 homes near Lake Isabella, a popular recreation area east of Bakersfield. The names of the two dead, whose bodies were found Friday, have not been released. The sheriff said his department hasn't been able to search very extensively and would be looking through burned homes with cadaver dogs seeking more possible victims. At least 80 houses were destroyed as the fire levelledneighbourhoods and forced thousands to flee.David Klippel, 78, a retired police officer, said he didn't see much of a threat after receiving an automated call advising him to leave. That changed dramatically within an hour Thursday afternoon."I've never been so close to a fast-moving, ferocious fire. It was unbelievable," said Klippel, who later learned his house had caught fire. "I almost didn't have time to get out."Neighbourhoods of mobile homes were charred to their foundations. Gusty winds pushed the flames and smoke farther into drought-starved terrain. The fire is 5 per cent contained."The forces of nature collided with a spark," Kern County Fire Chief Brian Marshall said. "The mountainous terrain, five years of drought and wind gusts of over 20 mph all drove a fire over 11 miles in 13 hours."Shiela McFarland, 67, from Mountain Mesa, left her home three days ago, taking her computer, cellphone, papers and her miniature poodle, Snuggles. At an evacuation centre, she slept on a cot outdoors next to his kennel.McFarland said she didn't know whether her home survived, but she was philosophical."It doesn't matter if I've lost everything," she said Saturday. "I've got my little dog, my kids and my grandkids. I've seen other people in worse shape."The fire tore through small communities of houses and mobile homes that surround the lake — actually a reservoir — and the Kern River, a popular spot for fishing and whitewater rafting. The communities are nestled in foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a mountain range that runs hundreds of miles north and south through eastern California.Scorching heat and tinder-dry conditions across the West have contributed to massive wildfires in the past week that have destroyed properties and sent residents to seek shelter and hope for the best.Laura Rogers was one of those who thought she'd never see her home or her brother's home again. Instead, she was lucky to find both standing in a neighbourhood of mobile homes that was devastated."I was sure this place was gone last night," Rogers said through tears as she gestured at the destruction around her. "I mean look at this, I can't believe it. It's like a scary movie."The downspout of her brother's home was melted on the ground, but the structure was intact.Dozens of other homes were gone, left in piles of charred sheet metal and cinderblock foundations. Scorched tricycles, air conditioners and TV dishes littered the landscape. Burned-out cars sat on tireless rims and leafless trees poked from barren, blackened dirt. The California blaze erupted quickly, putting some 1,500 homes in jeopardy. Officials said they expect to find many more homes destroyed as the smoke clears and they do a more thorough check of smoulderingneighbourhoods.Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency, freeing up money and resources to fight the fire and cleanup its aftermath.Dramatic video from Thursday night showed homes fully engulfed and others already gone as propane tanks flared up and popped. Flames glowing in the steep, rocky hillsides were reflected on the lake.Residents described a frantic flight from communities surrounding the lake, a dammed section of the Kern River that is a destination for boating, fishing, rafting, hiking and camping.Cachet Kirby, 22, of Mount Mesa and her neighbours grabbed clothes, blankets and their dogs and fled through thick smoke as flames charged down the slopes. "It was to the point you couldn't see, you couldn't breathe," she said. She and others, exhausted Friday morning after little sleep in shelters and cars, were desperate for information about their homes. "We could have gotten lucky and the wind shifted, or our house could be burned down," Kirby said.___Melley reported from Los Angeles. Countess of Wessex tours neighbourhood devastated in Fort McMurray fire-[Lauren Krugel, The Canadian Press]-June 24, 2016-yahoonews

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, saw first-hand the destruction caused by last month's wildfire in Fort McMurray on Friday.Prince Edward's wife was greeted upon her arrival at the city's airport by Gov. Gen. David Johnston and Wood Buffalo Mayor Melissa Blake. Sophie travelled with Alberta's deputy premier, Sarah Hoffman. They then boarded a bus for a tour through the city and were given a commentary about the fire's progress by fire Chief Darby Allen. At the destroyed neighbourhood of Beacon Hill, Sophie got off the bus and held onto a fence with her fingers while gazing at the devastation. Sophie asked about what supports are available to address the "emotional fallout" experienced by those whose homes were lost."It really is a case of a picture being worth a thousand or 10,000 words," said Johnston. "It's hard to fathom the devastation."The group later stopped at a sports complex downtown for a reception where people were waiting to greet the countess.Chantal Boutin was holding a Canadian flag that she managed to recover from the wreckage of her destroyed home and asked Sophie to sign it."When we saw that our house was burned to the ground, I saw the flag and the flag gave me hope," said Boutin.First responders, citizens and volunteers of the city were presented with the Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service.Johnston praised first responders that ran toward, instead of away, from the fire."That's what our people in uniform do. When we are faced with danger, they go the wrong way. They go and face it head on."After the ceremony, Sophie greeted Red Cross volunteers, RCMP officers and firefighters. From there, the group headed to the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation, southeast of the city. The community was presented with a commendation for helping Fort McMurray evacuees that day and for the courage they showed when the fire spread and they faced their own evacuation.Residents performed a traditional song and dance for the visitors. Elder Julie Cheecham presented Johnston with a moose hide, a fur-trimmed pair of mittens and Sophie with a beaded pair of moose hide slippers. She said it took about a week to make both of the gifts herself.Earlier in the day, Johnston presented a commendation to the First Nations community of Fort McKay north of Fort McMurray, which provided food and temporary shelter to evacuees.Residents had to flee their homes when flames whipped by high winds raced through the city May 3. About 2,400 houses and other buildings — about 10 per cent of the city — were destroyed in the blaze. It's not the first time royals have visited a fire-ravaged Alberta town. Five years ago, newlyweds Prince William and Kate lifted spirits when they visited Slave Lake, Alta., where a wildfire destroyed one-third of the community.Friday was the fourth and last day of the couple's visit to Canada. They arrived in Toronto on Tuesday and made a quick visit to Winnipeg before heading to Saskatchewan.Sophie dedicated a park in Edmonton on Friday before she flew to Fort McMurray, while Edward handed out the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, named after his father, to young people in Calgary. The royal couple's visit to Canada was to conclude with a gala reception at the National Music Centre in Calgary.

Florida nightclub shooter buried in Muslim cemetery: reports-[Reuters]-By Letitia Stein-June 23, 2016-YAHOONEWS

TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - The gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history has been buried at a Muslim cemetery in southern Florida, media reported on Thursday.A state death certificate lists Omar Mateen's burial site as the Muslim Cemetery of South Florida in Hialeah Gardens, a city in Miami-Dade County, according to the Orlando Sentinel.Mateen, 29, was killed by police after he took hostages during a three-hour standoff inside the Pulse nightclub. He also wounded 53 people in the June 12 attack.A funeral home located at the same address as the cemetery carried out the arrangements, the state document showed. It did not give Mateen's cause of death, the Sentinel reported. The cemetery could not immediately be reached for comment.Mateen, a U.S. citizen born in New York to Afghan immigrant parents, claimed allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State militant group in a phone call with authorities during his rampage.U.S. authorities believe that Mateen, who lived in Fort Pierce, Florida, with his wife and young child, was self-radicalized and acted alone without assistance or orders from abroad. The massacre took place during a Latin night celebration at Pulse, which was planning a Latin night street party on Thursday to benefit employees of the club. Pulse has been closed since the shooting.Several media organizations filed a lawsuit on Thursday seeking to force the city of Orlando to release 911 calls and other communications relating to the attack.Noting the massacre was the latest in a series of mass shootings in the United States, the lawsuit said there was a strong public interest in fully evaluating how police and other first responders reacted during the most critical phases of the tragedy."Information gleaned from the actual conversations with Mateen and others lies at the core of understanding exactly how events unfolded and will provide critical insight into the propriety of the government's tactical response," the suit said.On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a partial transcript of a 911 call made by Mateen from the club, and gave brief summaries of three other calls by the gunman.(Reporting by Letitia Stein; Editing by Daniel Wallis and and Peter Cooney)

Orlando Club Reopens Nearly Two Weeks After Deadly Mass Shooting-June 24, 20165:04 AM ET-Heard on Morning Edition-Cheryl Corley-NPR

It was Latin Night at Pulse when a gunman opened fire inside the Orlando club, killing 49 people and inuring dozens more. Nearly two weeks later, the LGBT club again hosted Latin Night.-RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:This morning we are following, of course, the historic news that the United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union. And we'll have updates on that story elsewhere in the show. Stay with us. But here in the U.S., last night saw a dance party in Orlando, Fla., that was more like a family reunion. The owners of Pulse nightclub, employees, patrons and friends gathered nearly two weeks after a gunman massacred 49 people at the gay club. NPR's Cheryl Corley has more.(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Orlando, welcome to Latin night for Pulse.CHERYL CORLEY, BYLINE: The dance floor this night was a restaurant's parking lot about two miles away from the nightclub. There were flowers, rainbow flags, artwork and, of course, music and dance. But this was a night of remembrance, a fundraiser and a determined celebration. Robin Maynard with the nonprofit pulseoforlando.org says the LGBT community is moving forward.ROBIN MAYNARD: No man with a gun is going to put people back in the closet. No amount of hate is going to make us afraid. We're going to come out and celebrate and dance and move forward and laugh and love and be Orlando strong. That's who we are.CORLEY: The owner of Pulse, Barbara Poma, walked through the crowd, hugging some, flanked by a security guard. Friends kept watch, too, protecting Poma as she softly talked to reporters about how she and the others are coping.BARBARA POMA: We spent time yesterday all together sitting around a picnic table reading mail, and it was great therapy for all of us. So we just want to thank everyone for staying by us, and I hope that they continue to do so.CORLEY: Nearby, Orlando Torres (ph) hugged his niece and two friends who had traveled from New York to be with him. They wore red T-shirts with June 12 on the front and the names of the 49 victims on the back. Torres, a promoter at the club, hid in the bathroom that deadly night and survived, untouched, playing dead after the gunman came in. He said he wanted to be at the street party to show his support.ORLANDO TORRES: You know, hug all my friends that made it out and those that are happy to see me here just as well and, you know, I'm just on a mission.(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TU SIN MI") JEHU EL REY: (Singing in Spanish).CORLEY: Michelle Benkowitz (ph) was waiting for her sister, a bartender at Pulse who had the day off on June 12. Benkowitz says there's been so much talk about why Omar Mateen, ultimately killed by police, came into Pulse wanting to kill. She says that might not even matter.MICHELLE BENKOWITZ: What really matters is that we come together for the families, for the people that were affected by it.CORLEY: What's next for Pulse? Mark Aistrake (ph), standing with his best friend Natalie Gonzales (ph) and her two daughters, says Pulse was such fun and such a community. It must be rebuilt.MARK AISTRAKE: You wouldn't want them to rebuild something else. You'd be like, that's not right.NATALIE GONZALES: Yeah, I think they should, and if they did I would be there. It would be hard. But then I would end up just having a blast. I would be there.CORLEY: And yes, on Latin night.(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)CORLEY: Cheryl Corley, NPR News, Orlando.NPR transcripts are created on a rush deadline by Verb8tm, Inc., an NPR contractor, and produced using a proprietary transcription process developed with NPR. New mosque in Saint John first of its kind in Canada-[CBC]-June 24, 2016-yahoonews

The home of a former business has been converted into a mosque in Saint John for a unique reason.Toronto filmmaker Himy Syed discovered the modest-looking mosque on Somerset street in Saint John on his travels for his project, 30 Masjids (mosques) in Canada,.According to those behind it, it's the first of its kind in Canada — established specifically for Syrian refugees."They needed a place to pray that was convenient. Many of them don't have cars or have other means of getting to the main Muslim Association of New Brunswick masjid over in Rothesay," said Syed."It's a bit scratchy but it does the job. It's much appreciated, that location. It's cozy, it's small."-Former surgical supply building-The building was formerly the home of ABC Surgical Supplies, and that business's sign still hangs over the entrance — even after its conversion to a mosque. Two months ago the community came together and formed a non-profit organization called IRCC (Immigrant Relief Community Centre), and the building was leased with an option to buy."Everyone came in and helped and it's been a blessing so far," said Abdullah DeLancy, the treasurer for IRCC.The presence of the mosque is much appreciated by the Syrian refugees who make up 90 percent of the attendees."It has made life much easier for us, and we pray and worship here," said Mohammad Osamah Qwader, a Syrian refugee who moved to Saint John four months ago.-Walking distance-"It's just walking distance here so we can come as often as we can. As often as we want. U.N. can't verify incendiary bombs in Syria, concerned by reports-[Reuters]-June 25, 2016-YAHOONEWS

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations is concerned by the Syrian opposition's accusations that incendiary weapons have been used in Syria but said on Friday it is unable to verify the reports. The Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee called on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday to launch an investigation into its accusations that Russia has used air-delivered incendiary weapons and cluster bombs in Syria. The Russian mission to the United Nations was not immediately available to comment on the accusations."We are concerned about the reports of the use of incendiary weapons in Aleppo, Syria," U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said. "We are not in a position to verify these reports.""We expect that all parties and states involved in the conflict will refrain from their use in this way," he said.Russia deployed warplanes to Syria last year to support President Bashar al-Assad against rebels seeking to end his rule. A crackdown by Assad on pro-democracy protesters five years ago sparked a civil war, and Islamic State militants have used the chaos to seize territory in Syria and Iraq.Incendiary weapons use substances that are designed to set fire to objects or burn people, and cluster munitions are containers that explode in the air to distribute smaller bombs over a large area.Use of incendiary weapons in areas where there are concentrations of civilians is banned under the Convention on Conventional Weapons, while cluster bombs are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions.(Story corrects final paragraph to show U.N. ban on incendiary weapons applies to areas with concentrations of civilians)(Reporting by Michelle Nichols; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)
