Iranian commander: 100,000 missiles ready to ‘annihilate’ Israel-Revolutionary Guards deputy chief says Lebanon-based rockets will ‘strike at the heart of the Zionist regime’-By JTA July 9, 2016, 12:04 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The deputy commander of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards said the country has over 100,000 missiles in Lebanon alone readied for the “annihilation” of Israel.Speaking in a July 1 speech aired on on Iran’s state-run IRIB TV, Brigadier General Hossein Salami also said that Iran has “tens of thousands” of additional missiles that are ready to wipe the “accursed black dot” of Israel off the map.His comments were translated from the Farsi by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).“Today, more than ever, there is fertile ground — with the grace of God — for the annihilation, the wiping out and the collapse of the Zionist regime,” Salami said, according to the MEMRI translation.“In Lebanon alone, over 100,000 missiles are ready to be launched. If there is a will, if it serves [our] interests, and if the Zionist regime repeats its past mistakes due to its miscalculations, these missiles will pierce through space, and will strike at the heart of the Zionist regime. They will prepare the ground for its great collapse in the new era,” Salami said.Lebanon is the base for the Hezbollah terrorist group, a powerful Iranian proxy that waged war with Israel in 2006, during which it fired scores of rockets into the Jewish state. Hezbollah is today believed to have more than 100,000 missiles in its arsenal.Salami also boasted that “tens of thousands of other high-precision, long-range missiles, with the necessary destructive capabilities, have been placed in various places throughout the Islamic world.”“They are just waiting for the command, so that when the trigger is pulled, the accursed black dot will be wiped off the geopolitical map of the world, once and for all,” he said, referring to Israel.Salami’s remarks came days before Germany’s Foreign Ministry said it is closely watching Iran’s attempts to procure nuclear and missile technology.German intelligence agencies reported dozens of such attempts last year, according to the Associated Press. A separate report by a German domestic intelligence agency said that counter-espionage officials had spotted 141 procurement attempts in one German state in the last year.Martin Schaefer, a spokesman for Germany’s Foreign Ministry, said that Germany and its partners would work to enforce the agreement signed in Vienna last July meant to curb Iran’s nuclear program.“We are already talking to our partners in New York and elsewhere, and we won’t hesitate to discuss this with Tehran,” he said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report

A lot of missiles will fly at the Israeli home front'-Bracing for next war, IDF troops drill for mass casualty rocket strike-A week after a Gaza missile hit a Sderot preschool, Home Front Command embarks on a massive exercise to prepare for the next attack-By Judah Ari Gross July 8, 2016, 8:09 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Smoke, explosions, rubble, screams, blood. Down in the south of Israel, a residential building in Safed was hit by a missile with a half-ton warhead. There was no immediate body count, but videos surfaced on social media of people trapped in collapsed building and under cars. Not really, of course. This was a search and rescue exercise by the Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command, on their base in Zikim near the Gaza border. The residential building hit by a rocket in “Safed” was actually hundreds of miles away from the real northern Israeli city. The explosions and smoke were clever pyrotechnics. The blood was fake, as were the screams. The rubble has been there for years, playing the part of numerous Israeli cities for search and rescue exercises.Sunday’s exercise was designed to be immersive, as close to the real thing as possible, with fake rocket alert sirens blaring in the background, pretend journalists interviewing rescue workers and the aforementioned pyrotechnics and other theatrics meant to reproduce the clamor of such attacks.“This advanced training exercise also included the integration of IDF officers, police officers, firefighters and Magen David Adom,” Brig. Gen. Dedi Simchi, chief of staff for the Home Front Command, told The Times of Israel on the sidelines of the exercise.Less than a week after a real rocket fired from Gaza struck an Israeli kindergarten in Sderot, IDF soldiers took part in a large, theatrical drill on Sunday designed to imitate just such an incident. The timing was a coincidence. The exercise had been planned long before last Friday night’s attack. But the recent strike demonstrated the necessity of drills like it.In Gaza, Lebanon, Syria or Iran, the immediate threats to Israel come in the form of rockets, missiles and mortars. While Israel possesses one of the world’s best missile defense batteries, the IDF has repeatedly stressed that those systems are not a panacea, that in the next war the country needs to be prepared for civilian casualties and strikes on Israeli cities.“In the next war, we determined that a lot of missiles of varying sizes and types will fly at the Israeli home front. Some of them will hit residential areas,” Simchi said.Israel may be a society that is used to war, but the Israeli civilian population has not been seriously harmed during a war in decades. In the 2014 Gaza war, six Israeli civilians died. In the 1973 Yom Kippur War — arguably the closest the Jewish state came to destruction — though approximately 2,500 Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting, there were zero Israeli civilian deaths. The only person who died away from the front lines in the October war was an air force pilot who was killed when a Syrian surface-to-surface missile struck the Ramat David base in northern Israel.Israel’s last war with a large number of civilian casualties was in fact its first, with some 2,400 non-combatants dying in the War of Independence. Those figures are undoubtedly a testament to the IDF’s ability to protect the civilian population, but they may also give Israeli citizens a false sense of security, one that the IDF top brass has worked and is working to fix.“I don’t think that the population isn’t prepared. But I do think that we need to adjust citizens’ expectations. In the past three rounds with Hamas in Gaza, the rockets weren’t so heavy,” he said.In a speech last month, the head of army intelligence Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevy stressed the importance of those “expectations.”“In the Yom Kippur War, we had one person” — the IAF pilot — “killed on the home front from a Syrian missile. The situation in the next conflict will be completely different,” Halevy said.As such, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot instructed the Home Front Command to put additional effort into preparing itself and the country for attacks, Simchi said.“We understand that the home front is going to be the secondary front in every war. If there’s going to be a war up north or down south, the Israeli home front is going to be hit with rockets,” Simchi said.In addition to large-scale exercises, like the one conducted on Sunday, this has meant speaking with the country’s rescue services and government agencies to ensure that there is an understanding of who is responsible for what during an emergency — something that Israel has not always excelled at.“Today there are agreements — written and signed — between the Home Front Command and National Emergency Authority, written and signed agreements between the Home Front Command and the Israel Police. We are ready,” Simchi said.“There’s no doubt that since the Second Lebanon War, everything dealing with the home front and emergency preparedness has improved greatly. For instance, Simchi offered, in the 10 years since that conflict, the precision of Israel’s rocket alert system has improved tenfold. Where the country was once divided into 25 alert zones, there are now 250, Simchi said, and there are plans to make the system even more accurate. In addition to the military’s improvement, individual Israeli cities have also become more prepared for rocket attacks, the brigadier general said.“Approximately 93 percent of the local authorities are in ‘Good’ condition, which we define as being able to handle threats and know how to provide a response [to disaster],” he said.“There’s a lot to do, but we’ve done a lot. We have a very good trend of improvement.”

Iran rejects ‘biased’ UN report on its missile tests-Tehran says document ignores US failure to abide by landmark nuclear deal; Berlin also monitoring regime’s activity-By Times of Israel staff and AP July 8, 2016, 7:19 pm

Iran on Friday dismissed as biased a confidential report by United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon that condemned Tehran’s missile tests, urging Ban Ki-moon to produce “a fair and realistic report.”The Iranian reaction came a day after Reuters reported that Ban found Tehran’s missile tests to be inconsistent “with the constructive spirit” of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. The deal saw the Islamic republic halt its atomic activity in return for the easing of years of crippling international economic sanctions.Reuters on Friday quoted an Iranian Foreign Ministry source as telling Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency that, “I suggest that Mr. Ban give a fair report … in which he also mentions America is not fulfilling its commitments under the deal.”While Ban’s report “stopped short” of saying the missile launches were a “violation” of the UN Security Council resolution of the nuclear deal, Reuters said, it did leave it to the Security Council to make a final decision on the issue. The Council will discuss Ban’s report on July 18, Reuters said.Germany also said Friday it is closely watching Iran’s attempts to procure nuclear and missile technology, after German intelligence agencies reported dozens of cases last year.Germany’s domestic intelligence agency said last month that Iran’s nuclear procurement efforts in the country remained “at a quantitatively high level” in 2015 and attempts to acquire missile technology showed an “upward trend.”A separate report by the domestic intelligence agency for North Rhine-Westphalia, published Monday, stated that counter-espionage officials had spotted 141 procurement attempts in the state last year — twice as many as in 2014.German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said Friday that the intelligence report made for “unpleasant” reading, but noted that it covered a period before the deal with Iran came into force on Jan. 16, 2016.Schaefer said that Germany and its partners would work to ensure Iran abides by the agreement signed in Vienna last July.“We are already talking to our partners in New York and elsewhere, and we won’t hesitate to discuss this with Tehran,” he said.Referring to Iran’s ballistic missile testing last fall, Schaefer said it could be the result of political infighting inside the country.“There are considerable forces which can exert power on the domestic structures in Iran and for whom the policies of the president and the foreign minister are a thorn in their side,” he said.“They may be tempted to try to undermine and torpedo the Vienna agreement on the nuclear program and the resulting normalization of relations with us and the West as a whole.”

Belgian Jewish paper demands EU action on Abbas ‘blood libel’-Referring to PA chief’s false talk of rabbis wanting to poison Palestinian wells, editor Michael Freilich urges ‘unambiguous rejection of this anti-Jewish incitement’-By JTA July 8, 2016, 9:58 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A Belgian Jewish newspaper urged European leaders to condemn a false statement by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose June 23 speech in Brussels about rabbis seeking to poison water wells sparked outrage in Israel. The Joods Actueel monthly on Monday published an open letter on the matter by its editor-in-chief, Michael Freilich, to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In his speech before the European Parliament, Abbas said: “Just a week ago, some rabbis rose up in Israel and explicitly announced and demanded of their government that it poison the water in order to kill the Palestinians.”Abbas’s office later apologized for the reference to wells, which a probe by Israeli media showed was false. The anger was in part over the fact that the theme of poisoning wells was frequent motif in medieval blood libels against Jews, which often led to deadly pogroms. Freilich also branded Abbas’ speech a “blood libel.”European Parliament President Martin Schulz and the EU coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism, Katharina von Schnurbein, both failed to correct Abbas before or during the speech, for which Abbas received a standing ovation. They have also yet to distance their institutions from the claims, Freilich wrote.“Painfully, Martin Schulz even published a tweet calling Abbas’ speech ‘inspiring,’” Freilich said. The Joods Actueel editor wrote to Merkel after Schulz’s office told the paper: “The content of the address is a total responsibility of the state leaders and the European Parliament is not in a position to censure or to control it.“Inspiring address by Pres. #Abbas to #EPlenary – #EU supports aspiration by large majority of #Palestinians for peace and reconciliation— EP President (@EP_President) June 23, 2016-Belgian Jews seek neither control nor censorship, Freilich wrote, but they do require an “unambiguous rejection of this anti-Jewish incitement in the heart of Europe.”Merkel’s office confirmed its receipt the letter but will not reply, said Freilich, who subsequently set up an online petition demanding action on Merkel’s part.

Jewish couple in Morocco found murdered, dismembered-Police say gardener of Sam Toledano, Vicky Chetrit confesses to killing them, disposed of body parts across Casablanca-By Times of Israel staff July 9, 2016, 5:14 pm

An elderly Jewish couple in Morocco were murdered in their Casablanca home last week. The killer then dismembered their bodies and disposed of the parts in different areas across the city.According to Moroccan media, the couple’s gardener was arrested by police and has confessed to the crime, which he said he committed due to financial hardship. The victims were identified as Sam Toledano and Vicky Chetrit.According to local reports, the man, identified in the Moroccan daily Le360 by the initials M.R., was facing eviction from his apartment when he hatched a plan to kill the couple and steal their money and jewelry. He arrived at the couple’s home last Sunday and killed Toledano before attacking and killing Chetrit. He then dismembered their bodies and disposed of them in various neighborhoods of the sprawling Moroccan city. The two were reported missing last Wednesday by a member of the local Jewish community.Using ultra-violet light, police officers sent to the home were able to find traces of blood the killer had attempted to clean up, according to Le360.The gardener was quickly identified as the prime suspect and arrested. The police retrieved the couple’s remains within 24 hours of the arrest, according to the report.

Israeli moderately injured in shooting attack on West Bank highway-Army launches manhunt to find perpetrators; victim wounded by gunshot to the shin; incident occurred near Tekoa-By Judah Ari Gross July 9, 2016, 11:33 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

An Israeli man was moderately wounded in a drive-by shooting attack on Saturday night near the West Bank settlement of Tekoa outside of Bethlehem, the army said. The victim, a man in his 30s, received initial treatment on the scene before being taken by military ambulance to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for further care, the Magen David Adom rescue service said.He suffered a gunshot wound to the shin, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.“Multiple bullet holes were identified on the vehicle,” the army said. The man’s wife and five children were in the vehicle with him during the shooting, a spokesperson for the Etzion bloc said. The Israel Defense Forces launched a manhunt to locate the perpetrator or perpetrators of the attack, a military spokesperson said. The army closed off the village of Sa’ir, south of Tekoa, as an “additional security measure” during its search for the suspect, an IDF spokesperson said.Palestinian media reported that following the closure, clashes broke out between IDF soldiers and residents in Sa’ir.The shooting attack took place at what’s known as the “T” junction on the highway connecting the Efrat and Tekoa settlements in the Etzion bloc. The Tekoa settlement was closed off immediately following the attack, according to a message sent to residents.Davidi Perl, head of the Etzion bloc regional council, released a statement following the attack, calling for government action.“Enough! The ‘Lone Wolf Intifada’ has come out of its recess and returned with guns. The prime minister and defense minister need to make a dramatic change on the ground. We must return the security to the citizens of the State of Israel,” Perl said in a statement. The attack Saturday comes after the brutal killing of 13-year-old Hallel Yaffa Ariel last Thursday morning in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba, near Hebron. Ariel was stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist while she was sleeping in her bedroom.A day later, Rabbi Miki Mark, a yeshiva head from the settlement of Otniel, was killed in a drive-by shooting by Palestinian terrorists while driving on Route 60 with his family. Mark’s wife was seriously injured and two of his children were wounded in the shooting attack which caused the family’s car to overturn. This past week also saw a number of attempted attacks on troops. On Wednesday, three IDF soldiers were lightly injured in a suspected car-ramming attack near the Neve Daniel settlement outside of Bethlehem. Security officials were treating the incident as a suspected terror attack by the Palestinian driver, who was seriously hurt.On Tuesday, Israeli soldiers shot a Palestinian woman as she attempted to stab one of them at a bus stop near the West Bank settlement of Ariel. The woman received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment, a military spokesperson said.Since October 2015, 35 Israelis and four others have been killed and hundreds more injured in the wave of Palestinian attacks, though the violence had dramatically waned of late. More than 200 Palestinians have also been killed, some two-thirds of them while carrying out attacks and the rest in clashes with troops, Israeli officials say.

NATO boosts support for countries battling Islamic extremism-Allaince’s allies in Mideast, North Africa to launch new naval mission in Mediterranean, use surveillance planes-By Lolita C. Baldor and John-Thor Dahlburg July 9, 2016, 8:02 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — NATO allies agreed Saturday to do more to help countries in North Africa and the Middle East that are targets of Islamic extremism, including using NATO surveillance planes in the fight against the Islamic State group.NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said alliance leaders also agreed to launch a new naval mission in the Mediterranean, and made commitments to maintain a stable military presence in Afghanistan and to fund Afghan security forces through 2020.“Today we have taken decisions to strengthen our partners and to project stability beyond our borders,” Stoltenberg told reporters on the second day of a crucial NATO summit in Warsaw. He said millions of people in Africa and the Middle East have been rendered “homeless and helpless” by radical organizations like IS and that the extremist groups are also to blame for organizing terrorist attacks in Europe and America. In response, Stoltenberg said NATO will start a training and capacity-building mission for Iraqi armed forces in Iraq, a country he called central in the fight against IS. NATO is also working to establish an intelligence center in Tunisia, a major recruiting ground for IS, and will shortly start providing support to Tunisian special operation forces, he said.Stoltenberg said US President Barack Obama and leaders of the other 27 NATO countries also agreed in principle for alliance surveillance aircraft to provide direct support to the US-led coalition fighting IS in Syria and Iraq, a decision the NATO chief called “a clear signal of our resolve to help tackle terrorism.” NATO diplomats say they expect flights by alliance AWACS planes to begin this fall.Stoltenberg said the alliance will launch a new maritime operation in the Mediterranean called Operation Sea Guardian, whose responsibilities will include counterterrorism. NATO will also cooperate with the European Union’s efforts to shut down human smuggling operations that have fueled Europe’s greatest migrant crisis since World War II.The alliance will also increase cooperation with Jordan, and is preparing to help the new government in Libya design policies and institutions to help it better defend itself against extremist organizations, Stoltenberg said.“We will provide greater support to our partners, so they can secure their countries and push back against violent extremism,” he said.Obama had been urging his fellow NATO leaders in Warsaw to expand their support for the war in Afghanistan against the Taliban. Meanwhile, violence in the US led him to cut his Europe trip short so he can return home Sunday. The US has pledged to provide $3.5 billion annually to fund Afghan forces, and the government in Kabul is expected to contribute as much as $500 million. Allies would provide the remaining $1 billion. The funding would maintain a total of 352,000 Afghan Army troops and police officers.“We are very close and I am certain we will reach that (funding) level,” Stoltenberg told reporters. A senior US administration official said NATO has commitments for about 90 percent of the goal.Stoltenberg said it’s too soon to say exactly how many troops allies will agree to keep in Afghanistan under NATO’s Resolute Support training and advisory mission. But he said he believed that, based on commitments made Saturday, force levels will remain largely stable. Specific numbers will be finalized this fall, he said.US administration officials said they believe the number of forces dedicated to the NATO mission will be a bit more than 12,000, and the US has pledged about 6,700 of that total. The officials were not authorized to discuss the details publicly, so spoke on condition of anonymity.Earlier this week, Obama announced that overall he would keep 8,400 US troops in Afghanistan, rather than cut their numbers to 5,500 as he once planned. In addition to taking part in the NATO advisory-and-assist mission, the US has special operations forces in the country that conduct counterterrorism missions. The planned force levels allow NATO allies to remain in regional hubs around Afghanistan, with Germany in the north, Italy in the west, Turkey in the capital of Kabul and the United States in the east and south. The Warsaw summit, NATO’s first in two years, is considered by many to be the alliance’s most important since the Cold War. Stoltenberg says NATO, founded in 1949, needs to adapt to confront an array of new threats to its member nations’ security, including cyberattacks and violence sparked by radical organizations like IS.On Friday, NATO leaders approved the deployment of four multinational battalions to Poland and the Baltic states to deter Russia, as well as a Romanian-Bulgarian brigade for the Black Sea region. Germany will lead a multinational battalion in Lithuania, with similar battalions to be led by the United States in Poland, Britain in Estonia and Canada in Latvia. Those moves were strongly criticized Saturday by Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet president during the Cold War.“NATO has begun preparations for escalating from the Cold War into a hot one,” Gorbachev was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. “All the rhetoric in Warsaw just yells of a desire almost to declare war on Russia. They only talk about defense, but actually are preparing for offensive operations.”The White House, meanwhile, announced Obama would cut his Europe trip short by one day in the wake of the attack in Dallas that killed five police officers and wounded seven others during protests over fatal police shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana.Obama will attend meetings in Warsaw on Saturday before heading to Spain for meetings with Spanish leaders and a visit with US troops. He returns to Washington on Sunday and will visit Dallas early next week at the request of Mayor Mike Rawlings.

Fatah TV airs cartoon shows Jews conspiring with the devil-Program for kids characterizes Jews as untrustworthy, driven by fear and jealousy of Muhammad and his followers-By Times of Israel staff July 8, 2016, 8:38 pm

A cartoon recently aired on a Fatah-owned Palestinian TV station showed Jews siding with the devil to fight Muslims and the Muslim prophet Muhammad. In one of the episodes of the show, the devil explains to another demon that he could not make the Jews fight Muhammad and his followers, because the hearts of the Jews were filled with fear. The clips were translated by Israel-based NGO Palestinian Media Watch.Another episode shows three Jews conspiring to fight against Muhammad. The character of the devil can be seen hovering behind the Jews as they conspire. The three are drawn in accordance with typical anti-Semitic tropes: long noses, beards and a proclivity to conspire. In a segment from the third episode, a character explains that Muhammad and his men are digging a trench near the northern edge of the city of Medina to defend it against the Kuraysh tribe – a Jewish tribe that had a treaty with Muhammad.According to the teachings of Islam, the tribe broke its treaty and Muhammad defeated them in a battle, after which he killed all the men in the tribe.A character in the cartoon explains that the Jews cannot be trusted to keep to the agreements they sign.A senior official in Fatah, which is headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, was also criticized last month for telling Palestinian news site Donia al-Watan: “Wherever you find an Israeli, slit his throat.”
