Canada’s Green Party votes to support Israel boycott-At convention in Ottawa, members endorse BDS movement despite opposition from party leader Elizabeth May-By JTA August 8, 2016, 4:43 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TORONTO — Canada’s Green Party last weekend voted to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel. At its convention in Ottawa, party members endorsed the BDS movement despite the party leader’s opposition to the measure. The Green Party “supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and we continue to advocate for good-faith negotiations,” party president Ken Melamed said after Sunday’s vote.“This support is intended to further advocate to that end. Our members, like many Canadians, will continue to search for ways to support both sides while acknowledging the complexity of the various security, economic, and religious concerns,” Melamed added.Green Party leader Elizabeth May said she was “disappointed that the membership has adopted a policy in favor of a movement that I believe to be polarizing, ineffective, and unhelpful in the quest for peace and security for the peoples of the Middle East. As is the right of any member, I will continue to express personal opposition to BDS.”The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs condemned the party’s decision as “outrageous.” It said that, “the BDS movement, which seeks to censor and blacklist Israelis, is fundamentally discriminatory and utterly at odds with Canadian values.”Party members also voted to adopt a resolution that calls on the Canada Revenue Agency to revoke the charitable status of any organization that violates Canadian or international human rights law.As originally worded, the resolution asked the party to pursue the revocation of the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund ostensibly because the JNF discriminates by selling and leasing land in Israel only to Jews.CIJA said it was “pleased” that May was “instrumental” in amending the resolution to remove specific references to the JNF, and said she was right to oppose the “toxic” BDS vote. 1/2 Truly embarrassing for @CanadianGreens that #BDS has passed. BDS is counterproductive, anyone who truly desires.. #GPConf16 #cdnpoli— Nico Slobinsky (@nicoslobinsky) August 7, 2016- 2/2 peace between Israelis & Palestinians must oppose this pernicious movement. #BDS @CanadianGreens #GPConf16 #cdnpoli— Nico Slobinsky (@nicoslobinsky) August 7, 2016

Russia, not Hezbollah, sent drone into Israel — report-Three weeks after IDF failed to bring down UAV that crossed over from Syria, Moscow officials acknowledge it was theirs-By Times of Israel staff August 7, 2016, 8:19 am

A drone that crossed into northern Israel last month belonged to Russia — not Hezbollah, as was initially suspected — the Haaretz newspaper reported Sunday. The unmanned aerial vehicle entered Israeli airspace from Syria on July 17. The Israel Defense Forces attempted to shoot down the aircraft three times, but failed.Israel’s security services initially suspected the Lebanon-based terrorist group Hezbollah was responsible for the breach; however, Russian officials admitted to their Israeli counterparts that the drone was, in fact, theirs, the newspaper reported. While the Russian officials claimed the incident was the result of “human error,” it is possible the Russian military was testing Israel’s aerial defense capabilities.Though Russian aircraft have crossed from Syria into Israel before, it was the first known case where the IDF retaliated to the breach. The army’s aerial defense unit fired two Patriot surface-to-air missiles at the UAV, and a third attempt was made to bring it down with an air-to-air missile fired by an Israeli fighter jet.In November, then-defense minister Moshe Ya’alon said a Russian plane had breached Israeli airspace, but the matter was “immediately fixed through communications channels” between the two countries. And late last month King Abdullah of Jordan told American lawmakers that Israeli and Jordanian jets together confronted Russian warplanes in January over southern Syria and warned them away from crossing their shared border.Though the origin of the drone wasn’t initially clear, a military official told Channel 2 news that the army believed the UAV was Russian-made.The launches triggered air-raid alarms across northern Israel. No rockets were known to have been fired into Israeli territory, however.Hezbollah-linked Lebanese fighter Anes al-Naqqash claimed at the time that the drone had indeed been sent by his group, and said it had just begun photographing army maneuvers in the Golan when it was shot at and turned back.Last year, Jerusalem and Moscow set up a mechanism to avoid accidental clashes like this one, as Russia helps Syrian President Bashar Assad maintain his grip on the country after more than five years of civil war.

Ex-cabinet minister says Israel-Saudi peace ‘in the cards’-Israelis will be able to travel to Gulf state ‘much sooner than you dream about,’ Rabbi Michael Melchior says, following visit by Riyadh delegation-By JTA August 5, 2016, 11:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A former Israeli minister, part of an Israeli group that met with a Saudi delegation that visited Jerusalem and Ramallah last month, said Israelis could be able to visit the Gulf state “much sooner than you dream about.”In a conference call Tuesday with British media hosted by the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre, Rabbi Michael Melchior said the day when Israelis can travel to Saudi Arabia is “in the cards and it will, as we say Inshallah, ‘with god’s help,’ happen very soon.”Inshallah is Arabic for “God willing.”Melchior, a former Knesset member with the defunct One Israel party (Labor-Meimad) and former minister for Diaspora Affairs, said his meeting with the Saudis focused on religious issues related to diplomacy between the two countries.Melchior, a Jerusalemite who is also the chief rabbi of Norway, said: “Religious peace is a way of using another language other than the secular language of the Arab peace plan… religious peace is a way of including those Mullahs who are not yet part of this thinking.”Asked about Saudi Arabia’s record of promoting religious extremism internationally, he said: “We’re trying to go ahead with the positive side of this. Today there is a big part of the Sunni world — and also the Shia world — who want to be part of the world. Saudi Arabia is investing a lot in getting the Israelis to adopt the Arab peace plan, at least as a basis for negotiations.”Melchior noted that, while the Saudi-Israeli meeting last month prompted condemnation from Iran and the Lebanon-based terrorist group it backs, Hezbollah, “the Sunni Arab world has neither condemned nor supported it.”An exception, he acknowledged, is the Arab-Israeli Hadash party, which condemned the visit as “part of the normalization of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Israel against Iran, Syria and resistance movements in the region” and the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.“Even the Hamas condemnation was a very soft condemnation, they said it was not the right time for such a meeting but they didn’t really condemn it,” Melchior said. “The only point made by the opponents to the meeting (Hassan Nasrallah and company) was that this was a way to make direct agreements between Saudi Arabia and Israel and circumvent the Palestinian issue, which is an absolute absurdity as the meeting took place in the offices of one of the leading people in the Palestinian authority, and the whole purpose of the meeting was to see how we could include the Arab Peace Initiative [in peace negotiations] and create peace between Israel and Palestine as part of the package.”During last month’s visit, the Saudi delegation, headed by former general Anwar Majed Eshki, met Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and other senior Palestinian officials, in Ramallah. It also met in Jerusalem with Dore Gold, a veteran Israeli diplomat who is director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Jewish pro-BDS group endorses anti-Israel Black Lives Matter platform-Jewish Voice for Peace backs movement that accuses Israel of committing ‘genocide’ against the Palestinians-By JTA August 6, 2016, 9:15 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

NEW YORK — Jewish Voice for Peace, which supports the movement to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel, released a statement unconditionally supporting the newly released platform of the Black Lives Matter movement, which in part accuses Israel of committing genocide. The platform, published Monday by a coalition of more than 50 groups called the Movement for Black Lives, encompasses a broad set of economic and social policy goals aimed at eliminating racism, mass incarceration and police violence. It includes a section criticizing United States aid to Israel, accuses Israel of practicing apartheid and says Israel is committing “genocide” against the Palestinians.Several Jewish organizations, such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Reform movement, have criticized the platform’s statements on Israel. But JVP’s statement, published Friday, “endorses the Movement for Black Lives platform in its entirety, without reservation.” Regarding the genocide accusation, JVP wrote in a statement sent to JTA that “it is not our role to police the language of the vision for Black lives.”JVP said it was “deeply disappointed” in other Jewish organizations for condemning the platform, calling on them instead to support the Movement for Black Lives.“These Jewish organizations are rejecting a thorough and inspiring transformational set of policy ideas developed by a broad coalition of Black leaders simply because these Black leaders have explicitly linked the experiences and struggles of Palestinians with their own,” the JVP statement said.“We should all take this opportunity to reflect on the impact of Israeli policy, and the interconnected nature of violence around the world,” the organization told JTA.Bend the Arc, a progressive Jewish group focused on domestic policy, also released a statement praising the platform Friday. The statement acknowledged the “deep pain and outrage” felt in the Jewish community due to the language on Israel, but said that “these differences should not distract from the broad agreement that exists within the progressive and Jewish community on the need for a bold racial justice agenda.”“The Movement for Black Lives has done extraordinary and powerful work raising consciousness about the harms inflicted on Black communities in the United States, and our collective need to transform the systems that perpetuate this violence,” Bend the Arc’s statement read. “It is our belief that our country will be made more whole, more inclusive, and more just because of this courageous racial justice movement.”

Delta grounding lifted, but travel chaos not over-Tens of thousands of passengers stranded at airports around the world after US airline computer glitch-By AFP August 8, 2016, 5:14 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON — Delta Airlines grounded all its flights worldwide Monday because of a computer breakdown, but lifted the order hours later while warning of cancellations and delays. The carrier blamed the computer problem on a power outage in its hub in Atlanta, Georgia. The halt left tens of thousands of passengers around the world stranded, as they crowded ticket counters and lay on the ground in airports.Flights will now resume on a limited basis, Delta said in a statement. But the ripple effect of the snafu will drag on.“Customers heading to the airport should expect delays and cancellations,” the statement said.“While inquiries are high and wait times are long, our customer service agents are doing everything they can to assist,” it added.Delta said the power outage that caused the computer meltdown began at 2:30 a.m. Eastern standard time (0630 GMT).Lines of passengers backed up at Delta ticket counters at US airports. At Los Angeles, passengers on a flight to New York had to get off their plane and return to the terminal, NBC News reported, while some people slept near departure gates at Las Vegas.A vast number of flight delays normally creates a cascading problem that affects airline traffic for days.Computer outages halting flights are not uncommon. In May, a glitch affecting Sweden’s civil aviation authority radar site disrupted air traffic throughout that country and grounded flights to and from Stockholm for several hours. In March, a computer system malfunction forced Japan’s All Nippon Airways to cancel more than 100 domestic flights, affecting some 16,000 travelers. And in mid-August 2015 a computer problem at a regional air traffic control center delayed hundreds of flights at busy US east coast airports — including those in the Washington and New York areas — for several hours.A rival US airline, United, suffered computer glitches in May and July 2015 that temporarily grounded hundreds of flights and backed up thousands of passengers.

Ex-Shin Bet chief: World ‘hideously naive’ about widespread diversion of aid to fund Hamas-Avi Dichter, head of Knesset Defense Committee, says misuse of charity moneys runs much wider than World Vision’s tens of millions, claims ‘almost 100%’ of UN refugee workers in Gaza are Hamas members-By Stuart Winer and Times of Israel staff August 8, 2016, 2:07 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The alleged funneling of tens of millions of World Vision charity dollars to Hamas for terror purposes is only a tiny example of the massive abuse of aid cash intended for Gaza residents that instead is used to fund Hamas, a senior Knesset member who used to head the Shin Bet intelligence agency said Monday. The funneling of international aid to finance terror by Hamas and other violent Islamist groups in the Gaza Strip is widespread and the world is hideously naive as regards the scope of the problem, said Avi Dichter, a Likud MK who heads the Knesset’s powerful Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. In an interview with Israel Radio, Dichter said that almost all of the United Nations aid workers in Gaza are members of Hamas, the terror group that seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, avowedly seeks Israel’s destruction and has fought three wars against Israel in recent years.Dichter was speaking after Muhammad Halabi, a Hamas member and manager of operations for the World Vision aid group in Gaza, was indicted last Thursday in a Beersheba court on a number of security-related charges for his alleged central role in the financing of the Hamas war machine with charity funds.Halabi, a member of Hamas from a young age, was handpicked to infiltrate the international charity in 2005 in order to steal money for the terrorist organization, according to Israeli investigators. Tens of millions of dollars of the charity’s funds were diverted to Hamas and used to dig tunnels, buy weapons, and support other aspects of Hamas terror activities, Israel alleges. World Vision and Halabi have denied the allegations. Australia has ceased funding the charity while it investigates the matter.“World Vision is only a small example,” Dichter said, declaring that other, similar organizations “know very well that they are funding Hamas.”“The fact that the donating world, which is recruited to help refugees and the needy, doesn’t understand that its cash is being pumped for terror uses… it is a naive world to the point of being hideous.”“When you look at groups like the UN and enlightened countries that, with well-established worldviews, fall into the trap set for them by Hamas and Islamic Jihad,” said Dichter, “it just is amazing to see the extent and power with which it plays out year after year after year.”The UNRWA United Nations Relief and Works Agency — the UN group that deals exclusively with Palestinian refugees — employs 30,000 clerks for five million Palestinian refugees, he said. And “it is clear that the number of UNRWA clerks who are working for Hama is close to 100%.”World Vision cast doubt Thursday on the accusations by Israel, insisting it conducts regular audits and evaluations to ensure financial aid in Gaza reaches those who need it most. Halabi denied “all these accusations,” his lawyer Mohammad Mahmoud said Sunday. On Monday, the charity said the numbers in Israel’s allegations didn’t add up.-‘Hamas digging itself a graveyard’-Dichter also responded to questions about the manner in which the Israeli defense establishment was dealing with the renewed threat posed by terror tunnels dug by Hamas under the border from Gaza to enable attacks inside Israel.“The state is investing enormous amounts of money to find solutions, both technological and engineering, for the problem,” he said. “There are advances, the efforts is being justified.” But, he said, Israel did not have a complete answer to the threat, and the danger of renewed attacks from the tunnels was emphatically still present. An as yet unpublished state comptroller report into the 2014 conflict in Gaza allegedly faults Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and war leaders for not taking the tunnel threat seriously enough at the time. Hamas used the tunnels to launch several deadly attacks inside Israel during the two-month long war the IDF calls Operation Protective Edge.“The threat is still there,” Dichter said. “Hamas is dedicating its heart and soul and all its resources to produce invasive tunnels.”“It is a threat that the defense establishment, and the IDF in particular, see as a central threat in the Gaza arena. The efforts to deal with that threat are tremendous.”As a result of those efforts, “Hamas will start to understand that it is digging for itself the biggest graveyard dug for terrorists,” he predicted.Dichter also criticized a weekend statement from the Defense Ministry that likened last year’s US-backed international deal curbing Iran’s nuclear program with the 1938 Munich Agreement signed by the major European powers with Nazi Germany. The row over the year-old deal, and the Defense Ministry’s bitter comparison to the Munich Agreement, flared after US President Barack Obama claimed Israeli security officials now back the Iran deal as IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot was visiting the US and as a senior Israeli official was also there to finalize a critical 10-year US military aid package for Israel.Dichter noted that the Defense Ministry was the main beneficiary of the US aid package and that “it was a mistake to (criticize the Obama-backed deal by invoking Munich), and certainly a mistake in timing.”Hebrew media reports Saturday also said it was not clear who had drafted the incendiary Defense Ministry statement, but that it had been approved by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman.“Obama is in his last months,” Dichter said. “Anyone who thinks it is appropriate to criticize or in general to analyze the processes of the US president over the last eight years regarding Israel in particular and the Middle East in general should show restraint and wait until January.”Dichter also backed Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, who last week called for the annexation to Israel of Ma’ale Adumim, a major West Bank settlement located to the east of Jerusalem.“It is just a matter of time,” Dichter said. “It is not a question of if Ma’ale Adumin will become part of Israel, but rather when.”Dichter said that previous peace negotiations between various Israeli governments and the Palestinians all worked on the assumption that Ma’ale Adumin will be part of the Israel.“We even got the blessing of the Americans in one form or another over the years,” he claimed-Ma’ale Adumim’s size and location makes it particularly important for both Israelis and Palestinians. Many Israelis see the settlement, home to some 40,000, as a suburb of Jerusalem and important to the defense of the capital from the east, while Palestinians say its presence renders the prospect of a contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank and East Jerusalem almost impossible.
