Hundreds turn out to honor IDF soldier whose body is held by Hamas-Sister of Lt. Hadar Goldin, who died in 2014 Gaza war, remembers her brother as a ‘lighthouse’ now extinguished-By Times of Israel staff August 9, 2016, 7:43 pm

Hundreds of people, including a number of government ministers, turned out Tuesday for a memorial ceremony for Lt. Hadar Goldin, an IDF soldier killed in the 2014 war in Gaza, whose body is still held by the Hamas terror group.Ministers Ayelet Shaked, Tzachi Hanegbi and Yoav Galant, as well as Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Michael Oren took part in the memorial at the Kfar Saba military cemetery. Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon, a relative of the Goldins, also paid his respects.“You live among us all the time,” Hadar’s sister Ayelet Kaufman said over her brother’s empty grave.“You were a lighthouse and now you’re not here, the lighthouse is suddenly missing,” she said. “There’s a huge, inconceivable gulf between the desire to stand with my [surviving] brother at the memorial… just for the family, and the cameras.”Goldin’s father Simha said that “in the name of the pact between soldiers and their commanders, I remind that the IDF left two bodies in Gaza and in Rafah. In the name of the holy trust between parents and the state’s leaders, I promise you that we’ll bring back Hadar for burial in Israel. We will do this in Hadar’s way, with strength and humility. We won’t rest and we won’t be deterred.”“The state of Israel left Lt. Hadar Goldin and First Sgt. Oron Shaul in Gaza, and the leadership failed in bringing them home,” he said.Goldin and First Sgt. Oron Shaul are believed to have been killed during the 2014 war with Hamas in Gaza, and their bodies are thought to be held by the terror group. The Goldin and Shaul families have joined forces in campaigning for the government to secure the return of their children’s remains. After a deal was struck in June to restore ties with Turkey which stipulated the easing of the blockade on the Gaza Strip, the Goldins issued a statement criticizing the government for not requiring the return of the bodies as part of the deal.Justice Minister Shaked, for her part, said at the memorial that the government’s commitment to bring Hadar Goldin home “didn’t end and we have one mission left — to bring him home together with Oron Shaul.”She added: “We are working to bring Hadar home as a message to our soldiers and moreover to the whole world. The people of Israel are completely committed to Hadar. We won’t rest until we do what we’re obligated to do.”

68% of Israelis support civil marriage, poll finds-Survey conducted by liberal Orthodox group shows widespread opposition to current religion-based laws, including from within religious community-By Raoul Wootliff August 10, 2016, 3:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A strong majority of Israelis back instituting civil marriage in Israel, with a quarter of those identifying as religious explicitly supporting civil ceremonies, a survey released on Wednesday found. The poll, published by the Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah movement, an organization that seeks to promote moderate Orthodoxy in Israel, found that 68 percent of Israeli Jews support the legalization of civil marriage in the country and 80% believe that the current laws restricting marriage to state-recognized religious hierarchies push Israelis to marry outside the country.Though same-sex marriage is not technically illegal, there is no Israeli institution authorized to carry it out. In a system inherited from Ottoman times, people can only marry in Israel through their religious institutions: Jewish couples must marry through the Chief Rabbinate, and Christians, Druze and Muslims all marry through their own state-sanctioned and publicly funded religious systems. The findings, which specifically focused on “the relationship between attitudes on religion and tradition and views regarding religion and state,” also suggested that religious observance and affinity for tradition do not necessarily mean support for restrictive religious laws.Twenty-five percent of respondents who described themselves as “religious” said they supported civil marriage, with the figure jumping to 50% among those identified as “traditional.”The study was conducted by the Rafi Smith polling institute for Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah and polled a total of 500 Israelis. In January, Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah was one of a number of Israel-based groups awarded a grant by a consortium of North American Jewish federations to encourage Israelis to consider alternatives to marrying through the Chief Rabbinate. The poll backs up findings from a number of recent polls showing a steady rise in support for civil marriages across various sectors of Israeli society.Shmuel Shattach, director of Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah, said the survey “slaughters a number of sacred cows.”“It proves once and for all that the objection to the current [situation] in the area of religion and state does not mean an objection to religion. On the contrary, many of those who care about religion are opposed to the current religious legislation, precisely because of this concern,” he said.“It is time for Israeli politicians, including the religious ones, to finally begin reflecting the sentiments of many within Israeli society.”

Jerusalem Police act to end neglect of city’s East-1,200 new officers and six new stations will ‘strengthen rule of law’ and provide ‘quality services’ to city’s Palestinian residents-By Times of Israel staff August 10, 2016, 8:48 am

The Jerusalem Police announced on Tuesday a massive reform of its East Jerusalem district, including the deployment of at least 1,200 new officers and the opening of six additional police stations in areas of the capital that have been virtually unserved by police.Despite Israel’s official annexation of the city’s neighborhoods over the Green Line, a move not recognized by the international community, East Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods suffer from neglect and poor infrastructure. Palestinian residents refuse to vote in Jerusalem’s municipal elections so as not to de facto recognize Israeli annexation of areas they hope to see as the future capital of a Palestinian state.Deputy Commissioner Yoram Halevy, who commands the Jerusalem Police, has led a major restructuring of the force that seeks to correct the police’s part in the disconnect between east and west. The purpose, a police statement said Tuesday, is to “strengthen and deepen the rule of law throughout Jerusalem and in the villages of East Jerusalem, enhance accessibility to police services and provide quality police services to all residents of the city, with an emphasis on strengthening the shared day-to-day life of the public as a whole.”The six new stations will be tasked not only with counter-terrorism efforts against extremists living in the neighborhoods — a function already fulfilled by the Jerusalem Police’s intelligence and elite combat units — but primarily to serve local residents and push back against rampant crime. The stations will open in the neighborhoods of Issawiya, a-Tur, Beit Safafa, Jabel Mukaber and Sur Baher. The plan is expected to cost some NIS 1 billion ($262 million) in the first four years.Halevy’s plan recognizes and acknowledges the neglect that characterized the state’s relationship with those neighborhoods, and includes appointing municipal officials from various public services in the new police stations. In an effort to convince residents of the police’s good intentions, the stations will focus during their first two years of operations on providing these services, rather than upping enforcement.East Jerusalem’s police hierarchy will also be upgraded within the national police district structure, and will be commanded for the first time by an officer of an assistant commissioner’s rank, equal to that of the officer who heads the combined forces in west Jerusalem. Some 1,200 new positions have already been approved, and some 200 new officers have been hired.

Israeli, US groups for slain troops’ families brief White House-Counseling nonprofits meet with administration officials under the Joining Forces Initiative advocacy program-By JTA August 10, 2016, 4:46 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel intercepts Gaza-bound shipment of commando knives-Border guards at crossing seize professional-grade blades concealed among tools, Defense Ministry says-By Tamar Pileggi August 10, 2016, 4:43 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israeli security personnel at the Kerem Shalom border crossing into the southern Gaza Strip earlier this week foiled an attempt to smuggle dozens of commando knives into the Palestinian enclave, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.During a search of a vehicle, Defense Ministry guards and Shin Bet operatives uncovered two boxes containing professional-grade 30-centimeter (12-inch) commando knives hidden in a shipment of tools.Officials also recently intercepted a shipment destined for the Palestinian electric company in Gaza containing concealed graphite strips, the Government Press Office said in a statement, noting the raw material is often used to make rocket fuel. The knives and graphite were confiscated, and Israeli security services have launched investigations into both smuggling attempts.Israel maintains tight control on the import to the Gaza Strip of electronics and other equipment it says could be used to carry out attacks against Israeli targets. In recent months, Kerem Shalom guards and Shin Bet operatives have seized concealed shipments to Gaza containing drones, explosive-making materials, rocket- and tunnel-building equipment, and a number of wet suits concealed inside crates of sports gear, which the Defense Ministry at the time said could be to used in a seaborne attack against Israel.Last month, the Defense Ministry said its guards seized an unusually large shipment of electronic and surveillance equipment at the Erez crossing along the northern Israel-Gaza border.Among the items were a dozen small unmanned aerial vehicles and components, security cameras, satellite communications equipment, surveillance cameras, packages of motion sensors, binoculars, laser pointers for weapons, communications equipment and electronic boards, tasers, weapons components, diving watches equipped with flashlights, flippers, miniature cameras, GoPro cameras, DVR cameras, and other banned electronic components.Hundreds of trucks delivering food, aid and other goods pass through the Kerem Shalom Crossing into the Strip every day.

Trump aide meets with Netanyahu officials in Jerusalem-David Friedman gets security briefing in Israel, while PMO representative meets with Clinton staff in US-By Times of Israel staff and Raphael Ahren August 9, 2016, 10:28 pm

A senior adviser to Republican nominee Donald Trump met with officials from the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem this week, the PMO confirmed to The Times of Israel on Tuesday.David Friedman, one of two Trump aides tasked with advising the presidential hopeful on Israel matters, was given a diplomatic-security briefing by Israeli officials, Haaretz newspaper said.Friedman, an American lawyer who represented Trump’s interests over the years, is rumored to be Trump’s potential pick for US ambassador to Israel, should Trump win the White House in the November elections. He told the media last month that Trump would back an undivided Jerusalem, and support Israel’s annexation of parts or all of the West Bank.Friedman, who serves as Trump’s adviser on Israel along with Jason Dov Greenblatt, told Haaretz in June that Trump wouldn’t necessarily adopt the positions of previous American presidents in supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The candidate, he stressed, did not see a Palestinian state as “an American imperative” in any way. “Trump’s position is that we have to deal with reality and not hopes and wishes,” Friedman said. While Friedman was in Jerusalem on Tuesday, an Israeli official was dispatched to meet with representatives of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s staff.A senior Israeli official told Haaretz that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that he would work to avoid appearing partisan in the 2016 elections. Netanyahu came under fire in 2012 when he appeared to back US President Barack Obama’s ultimately unsuccessful challenger Mitt Romney.Last month, Netanyahu told reporters he is being “very careful” not to get involved in the US presidential campaign.Friedman also met with Israel’s Republicans Overseas organization and was given an outline of the group’s efforts to get American-Israelis to vote Trump in the upcoming election.

Black Lives Matter platform author defends Israel ‘genocide’ claim-Ben Ndugga-Kabuye says there is a ‘structure of violent deaths that are state sanctioned’; denies ‘special connection’ with Palestinians-By Ben Sales August 10, 2016, 1:30 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

NEW YORK (JTA) — The co-author of the Black Lives Matter platform passage accusing Israel of “genocide” defended the term, saying Israel’s actions fit in its wider definition.Ben Ndugga-Kabuye co-authored the statement along with Rachel Gilmer, the former board member of a Zionist youth group. Ndugga-Kabuye told JTA he understood why Jewish groups disagree with the statement, but was perplexed that it has received so much attention. He compared it with the accusations of genocide that black activists have leveled at the United States and called the Israeli-Palestinian conflict one of many international conflicts US black activists feel connected to.“The way we look at it is, we take strong stances,” Ndugga-Kabuye, a New York City organizer for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, told JTA. “The demand we’re making is we’re against the US continuing funding and military aid to the government of Israel. These are all things that are going to be in debate.”The platform, released August 2 by The Movement for Black Lives coalition, is largely a statement of the goals of a movement that coalesced around police violence directed against black people in the United States, mass incarceration of African-Americans and other domestic issues. But it also calls for ending US military aid to Israel and accuses Israel of being an apartheid state. The platform includes a link to a website promoting the movement to boycott, divest and sanction Israel called BDS.“The US justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people” reads the “Invest/Divest” section of “A Vision for Black Lives.”A string of Jewish organizations, from the Anti-Defamation League to the Reform movement and National Council of Jewish Women, has condemned the genocide and apartheid language as well as the BDS endorsement. T’ruah, a rabbis’ human rights group that opposes Israel’s West Bank occupation, also criticized the document. Most of the organizations took pains to note that they are sympathetic to other parts of the platform, many of which jibe with liberal Jewish positions on the criminal justice system, economic justice and immigration.“While we are deeply concerned about the ongoing violence and the human rights violations directed at both Israelis and Palestinians, we believe the terms genocide and apartheid are inaccurate and inappropriate to describe the situation,” NCJW wrote in a statement. “Further, BDS is too often used to de-legitimize Israel’s right to exist.”Jewish Voice for Peace, which supports BDS, was the rare Jewish group that endorsed the platform in its entirety.Ndugga-Kabuye said state actions don’t need to rise to the level of the Holocaust or other historical genocides to deserve the term, which he said could connote unjust state killing of a disadvantaged group. He compared his usage of the word to We Charge Genocide, a group that opposes police violence in Chicago.“We’re talking about a structure of violent deaths that are state sanctioned, that are without accountability, and that are ongoing,” he told JTA. “We can say this is what’s happening in Palestine and not equate it with what’s happening in South America. It doesn’t say it’s the same number of people being killed or the [same] manner of people being killed.”Ndugga-Kabuye said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is just one of many international issues the platform comments on — including the dangers African migrants face in crossing the Mediterranean Sea, or conflicts in Somalia, Colombia or Honduras. He said the passage on Israel is longer because “there’s a certain prominence to it, and that may require us to go a little more in detail.” But he said the statements about other conflicts, charging the United States with imperialist actions, are just as strong as the language condemning Israel.“I don’t see it as a special connection,” Ndugga-Kabuye said about the link between the Movement for Black Lives and the Palestinian cause. “We stand in solidarity with Palestine, but it’s not any different than our connection with the Somali community. It’s not any different than our connection with the Colombian community.”The vast majority of the platform addresses issues unrelated to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Its six sections deal with physical, social, economic and political discrimination against black people. Among its list of demands is an end to capital punishment, free universal education and a universal basic income for black Americans, the demilitarization of police, a broad reform of the prison system and reparations for black Americans. In addition to demanding an end to foreign aid for Israel and Egypt, the platform calls for divesting from the fossil fuel industry and reducing the US defense budget. The platform accuses the US of subjecting black Americans to “food apartheid” and “educational apartheid.” In both cases, it claims the government has deprived black communities of access to the same resources enjoyed by white Americans.Ndugga-Kabuye told JTA that his goal was “thinking about all the different ways American military policy impacts different black communities across the world and how that’s tied into what’s going on here domestically.”“The main effort of a number of the sections in the platform is to connect the domestic Movement for Black Lives to the international movement for black lives in a number of different countries,” he said.Gilmer, the co-author of the Invest/Divest section, told Haaretz her father is African-American and her mother is Jewish. She is a former board member of Young Judaea, a Zionist youth group, although she no longer identifies as Jewish, according to Haaretz, and has become an anti-Israel activist. Now she is the chief of strategy for Dream Defenders, a black community organizing group based in Florida.(Gilmer did not respond to email and Facebook messages from JTA seeking comment.)-Dream Defenders released a statement doubling down on the genocide language. The statement accused pro-Israel critics of being “wolves in sheep’s clothing” for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement only as long as it supports Israel. It asserted that Israel committed genocide during its 1948 War of Independence, as some 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from Israel or fled and were prevented from returning.Fighting Israeli “apartheid,” the statement said, is inseparable from fighting racism in America. It called on its allies to join the BDS campaign.“As Black people fighting for our freedom, we are not thugs and our Palestinian brothers and sisters are not terrorists,” the statement said. “For the children who are met with tear gas and rubber bullets as they walk home from school, for the families of those we have lost to police violence, for the communities devastated by economic violence and apartheid walls, we fight.”On Friday, Jewish Voice for Peace released a statement from a group called the Jews of Color Caucus backing the platform’s section on Israel.“We call on the US Jewish community to end its legitimization of anti-Black racism through its combined attacks on the Black Lives Matter Platform and US Palestine solidarity,” the statement said. “We call on the US Jewish groups that have engaged in this anti-Black violence to retract their racist and harmful statements.”Mainstream Jewish groups rejected the notion that because they object to the use of the term “genocide” and the emphasis on Israel, they are opposed to the economic and social justice goals of the Black Lives Matter movement. The groups noted how difficult, if not impossible, it is for them to work with members of Black Lives Matter on common causes when the Israel language signals they are not welcome.“JCRC cannot and will not align ourselves with organizations that falsely and maliciously assert that Israel is committing ‘genocide,’” wrote Boston’s Jewish Community Relations Council in a statement on the platform. That being said, the statement continued, “As we dissociate ourselves from the Black Lives Matter platform and those BLM organizations that embrace it, we recommit ourselves unequivocally to the pursuit of justice for all Americans, and to working together with our friends and neighbors in the African-American community, whose experience of the criminal justice system is, far too often, determined by race.”Ndugga-Kabuye said he understood that the genocide term could prevent some Jews from joining the Black Lives Matter movement, but said it was “something we have to consider, but it’s also something we have to accept.” He said negative Jewish reactions to the platform recalled the later years of the 1960s civil rights movement, when white and black allies split over tactics and ideology. He rejected the idea that accusing Israel of genocide makes the movement anti-Semitic, saying the accusation is not connected to Israel’s Jewish character.“Are you saying I’m committing genocide because of who I am, my identity?” Ndugga-Kabuye said, hypothetically placing himself in Israel’s role. “That would obviously be racist. But if you’re talking about a series of policies that are in place between one group over another, folks may argue we’re wrong, but the question of whether we’re anti-Semitic is another question altogether.”
