Police disarm pipe bomb near Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem-Officers close off shrine after explosive device discovered in parking lot, launch investigation-By Judah Ari Gross August 7, 2016, 2:11 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A police sapper disarmed a pipe bomb that had been left in the parking lot of the Rachel’s Tomb holy site in northern Bethlehem on Sunday. The explosive device was discovered by officers outside the religious site, prompting them to seal off the area and call in a bomb disposal unit, police said. After inspecting the device, the sapper “neutralized” it, a police spokesperson said.No injuries or damage were caused by the pipe bomb, the spokesperson added.Police have opened an investigation to determine who placed the bomb in the parking lot.Rachel’s Tomb is believed to be the burial place of the matriarch Rachel. It is holy to Jews, Christians, Muslims and members of other world religions. In October, the IDF installed a series of concrete barriers around the tomb, effectively separating it from the rest of Bethlehem.

Iran says it executed nuclear scientist for spying for US-Official confirms statement made by Shahram Amiri’s family last week, says he leaked ‘confidential and vital’ information-By AFP and Times of Israel staff August 7, 2016, 3:16 pm

Iran has executed a nuclear scientist convicted of handing over “confidential and vital” information to the United States, a judicial spokesman said on Sunday, confirming claims made by the man’s family over the weekend.“Shahram Amiri was hanged for revealing the country’s top secrets to the enemy,” Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie was quoted as saying by the Mizan Online news site.Amiri was a nuclear researcher at Malek Ashtar University of Technology and worked for Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization. He was said to have had in-depth knowledge of Iran’s rogue nuclear program. His family said he was executed on August 3 and that they had been allowed to visit him the day before. The researcher disappeared in Saudi Arabia in June 2009 and resurfaced a year later in the United States. Iranian officials welcomed him back to Iran in 2010. According to some reports, his family was harassed and tortured in a bid to force him to come back. There has been little information released since then. While in the US, he recorded and posted a series of bizarre videos, first claiming he had been kidnapped by US and Saudi agents and forced to reveal sensitive information while “under intense psychological pressure,” and in a second video, saying he was living in Arizona and wanted to study there. In a later post, he said he wanted to go home.Amiri said after returning to the Islamic Republic that he had been held in the US for more than a year after being “kidnapped” at gunpoint by two Persian-speaking CIA agents in the Saudi city of Medina.Ejeie said the US had been “outsmarted” by Iran’s intelligence services.“American intelligence services thought Iran has no knowledge of his transfer to Saudi Arabia and what he was doing but we knew all of it and were monitoring,” he was quoted by state television as saying.Tehran and Washington have had no diplomatic ties since 1980, when students stormed the American embassy following the 1979 Islamic revolution.“This person, having access to confidential and highly confidential information of the regime, had established a connection to our number one enemy, America, and had provided the enemy with Iran’s confidential and vital information,” Ejeie said-“Shram Amiri was tried in accordance with law and in the presence of his lawyer. He appealed his death sentence based on judicial process. The Supreme Court… confirmed it after meticulous reviews,” he added. The spokesman dispelled a “rumor” by Amiri’s family that he had received a 10-year prison term.Iran last year signed a landmark deal with world powers, including the US, to place curbs on its controversial nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Netanyahu said blindsided by Liberman’s Iran-Munich deal comparison-PMO rushed to stress vital ties with US, called US envoy, after Defense Ministry likened nuke pact to 1938 agreement with Nazis-By Times of Israel staff, Raphael Ahren and Eric Cortellessa August 7, 2016, 6:20 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not told in advance about a statement issued Friday by the Defense Ministry that compared the year-old US-backed Iran nuclear deal with the 1938 Munich Agreement, and his office was forced to call US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro later on Friday to try to play down a war of words with Washington over the deal, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office were quoted saying Saturday.Hebrew media reports Saturday also said it was not clear who had drafted the incendiary Defense Ministry statement, but that it had been approved by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, and had been issued by the ministry, rather than the minister, because it came in response to President Barack Obama’s assertion Thursday that Israeli security officials now back the Iran deal.Apart from the PMO’s call to Shapiro, Netanyahu on Friday hurriedly issued a statement soon after the Defense Ministry had sent out its harsh comments in which, while the prime minister stressed that Israel’s stance on the Iran deal had not changed, he emphasized the centrality to Israel of its vital relationship with the United States. The row over the year-old deal, and the Defense Ministry’s bitter comparison with the Munich Agreement, flared as IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot is visiting the US, and as a senior Israeli official is also there to finalize a critical 10-year US military aid package for Israel.Opposition politicians on Saturday castigated the Defense Ministry for its comments, with Meretz leader Zehava Galon charging that Liberman was “intent on destroying” Israel’s ties with the US.Obama had said Thursday that Israeli defense officials are now behind the deal signed by world powers and Iran, and that they recognize the efficacy of the accord. The “Israeli military and security community … acknowledges this has been a game changer,” Obama said. “The country that was most opposed to the deal.”In the statement issued Friday by his office in response, Netanyahu stressed, by contrast, that Israel’s position on the Iran nuclear deal “remains unchanged,” but also noted that Israel “has no greater ally than the United States.”What mattered most now, Netanyahu went on, was to ensure that supporters and opponents of the deal alike work together for three goals: “Keep Iran’s feet to the fire to ensure that it doesn’t violate the deal; confront Iran’s regional aggression; and dismantle Iran’s global terror network.”Netanyahu said he “looks forward to translating those goals into a common policy, and to further strengthening the alliance between Israel and the United States, with President Obama, and with the next US administration.”The Defense Ministry had used highly emotive language Friday to contradict Obama.“The Israeli defense establishment believes that agreements have value only if they are based on the existing reality, but they have no value if the facts on the ground are the complete opposite of those the deal is based upon,” the Ministry said in the statement. When the deal was signed last summer between Iran and world powers, Yisrael Beytenu party leader and current Defense Minister Liberman compared it to the 1938 Munich Agreement, calling the deal with Tehran “total capitulation to unrestrained terrorism and violence in the international arena.”The Defense Ministry employed similar language in Friday’s rejection of Obama’s claim.“The Munich Agreement didn’t prevent the Second World War and the Holocaust precisely because its basis, according to which Nazi Germany could be a partner for some sort of agreement, was flawed, and because the leaders of the world then ignored the explicit statements of [Adolf] Hitler and the rest of Nazi Germany’s leaders,” the ministry said.“These things are also true about Iran, which also clearly states openly that its aim is to destroy the state of Israel,” it said, pointing to a recent State Department report that determined that Iran is the number one state sponsor of terrorism worldwide. The Defense Ministry further said the deal reached “only damages the uncompromising struggle we must make against terrorist states like Iran.”Some high-level former and current Israeli defense figures have spoken out in sometimes conditional defense of the nuclear deal. Chief of Staff Eisenkot said warily in January that it could present “opportunities” in the future but also raised concerns at the “challenges” it poses. But lawmakers from the ruling coalition have continued to criticize the agreement, citing continued ballistic missile tests banned under an attendant UN agreement, and pointing to Tehran’s continued anti-Israel rhetoric and support for terror groups.A top minister close to Netanyahu, meanwhile, also directly contradicted Obama’s assertion that Israeli security officials now back the accord. “I don’t know to which Israelis he (Obama) spoke recently. But I can promise you that the position of the prime minister, the defense minister and of most senior officials in the defense establishment has not changed,” Tzachi Hanegbi told The Times of Israel on Friday.“The opposite is the case. The time that has elapsed since the deal was signed proved all our worries that, regrettably, we were justified before the deal was made,” said Hanegbi, a minister who works in the Prime Minister’s Office and who until recently chaired the Knesset’s powerful Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.Netanyahu remains openly critical of the agreement, which he says paves Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal. The nuclear agreement “removes the restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program based on dates certain, rather than on changes in Iran’s aggressive behavior, including its support for terrorism around the world,” a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel two weeks ago. “The deal doesn’t solve the Iranian nuclear problem, but rather delays and intensifies it.”The accord, which began its formal implementation in January, will expire in 15 years.Obama also said Thursday that those who had been most critical of the deal should make mea culpas and admit they were wrong.“What I’m interested in is if there’s some news to be made, why not have some of these folks who were predicting disaster come out and say, ‘This thing actually worked.’ Now that would be a shock,” he said.“That would be impressive. If some of these folks who said the sky is falling suddenly said, ‘You know what? We were wrong and we are glad that Iran no longer has the capacity to break out in the short term and develop a nuclear weapon.’ But that wasn’t going to happen.”

Baghdad to destroy home of Jew who helped found modern Iraq-Country’s tourism ministry slams decision to demolish 100-year-old house of Sassoon Eskell, hints at corruption-By Dov Lieber August 7, 2016, 12:37 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Baghdad municipality announced Friday it would demolish and then give to a developer the 100-year-old home of Iraq’s first finance minister, Sir Sassoon Eskell, while an official in Iraq’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities slammed the decision as a “violation” of the law.Eskell, who was born into an aristocratic Baghdadi Jewish family in 1860, was instrumental in founding the Iraqi government’s laws and financial infrastructure. The municipality of the Iraqi capital said in the press release that Eskell’s home “is not a heritage site according to the book of the heritage department,” the Iraqi site Assabah al-Jadeed reported Saturday.“The home was constructed 100 years ago on Rashid Street, in central Baghdad, and is presently granted to a citizen to invest in,” the statement continued, stressing that “the investment is done in accordance with the law.”But Sa’id Hamza, head of the investigation department of heritage sites within the ministry, accused the municipality of “violating the law” by giving away Eskell’s home for investment.“Who in Baghdad’s municipality considered the home to not be a heritage site?” he reportedly wondered, suggesting there may have been corruption.Hamza added that Eskell’s home is composed of two parts: one that is meant to be handed over to the Finance Ministry, and another that is supposed to be returned to his grandson Albert Sassoon Eskell.Eskell, who was knighted by King George V in 1923, was a key figure in the founding the Iraqi state in 1920, and served five terms as the country’s finance minister before his death in 1932. He also served as the deputy for Baghdad in the first parliament of the Kingdom, and was reelected to all successive parliaments until his death. When Winston Churchill convened the Cairo conference in 1921 to discuss what would become Iraq, Jordan and Israel, Eskell was one of two Iraqis sent to determine the fate of his country and choose its king.Eskell was so well-regarded for his financial rigidity and honesty that his first name has been transformed into a verb meaning “strict in accounting,” Assabah al-Jadeed reported. The famed English writer Gertrude Bell wrote admiringly of Eskell’s personality and political talents.“The man I do love is Sasun Eff. [Eskell] and he is by far the ablest man in the Council. A little rigid, he takes the point of view of the constitutional lawyer and doesn’t make quite enough allowance for the primitive conditions of the ‘Iraq, but he is genuine and disinterested to the core. He has not only real ability but also wide experience and I feel touched and almost ashamed by the humility with which he seeks — and is guided by — my advice,” Bell wrote in 1920.
