But as in every year, injuries were not far behind, with MDA treating 220 for cycling-related crashes.Another 249 people were treated for weakness and fainting spells due to the fast, which includes a ban on drinking water; 11 required resuscitation.Three people were killed and two injured in a car accident near Dimona. Another 20 were injured in vehicular accidents and 20 in violent incidents.Magen David Adom had deployed hundreds of extra medics, paramedics, ambulances and volunteers throughout the country in anticipation of an influx of emergency situations.“Thousands of people suffer on the fast from dehydration, fainting and road accidents,” MDA Director Eli Bin said before the fast. There’s something about an empty highway, a ribbon of black cutting through the night, that will move you deep in your soul. Kerouac knew this, as the miles of empty asphalt spooled under his wheels. But there is nothing as magical and spiritual as the empty highways of Israel on Yom Kippur, a silence that fills up every corner of your being.As a journalist, covering the wounds and scars of this country, you can find yourself dripping in sarcasm and cynicism, questioning why you chose to move to this loud, angry, hate-filled place. Nothing is holy in the Holy Land: everything is political, steeped in divisive conflict. Everything you say or write will somehow cause anger, heartache, hatred.Yom Kippur is not free from conflicts. There are the teenagers in Jerusalem who yearly throw rocks at Arab cars on Hebron Road, and there were the 2008 riots in Acre when an Arab man drove through a religious Jewish neighborhood blaring music.During the past two years, Yom Kippur also coincided with Eid al-Adha, when Muslims typically drive from family party to family party, meaning that just as the Jews stop driving, eating and listening to music for religious reasons, the Muslims did the exact opposite. This usually happens once ever 33 years, but quirks of the Jewish leap year and the fact that the faiths use different lunar calendars meant it happened twice in a row in 2014 and 2015. Due to the confluence of the holidays, religious and interfaith leaders tried to encourage both sides to be tolerant of their neighbors in unprecedented statements from Jewish and Muslim leaders.But aside from the sporadic incidences of rock throwing and riots, Yom Kippur is separate from the rest of a year, alone on a pedestal. The fact that almost no Jewish Israelis drive on Yom Kippur shocks me every year. Really? No one drives? Israelis hold nothing sacred. Except, perhaps, this.For one day a year, everyone stops. The roads that we hurry down become empty scrolls, open to adventures and play.In Tel Aviv, it becomes the holiday of the bicycle.At night, the Ayalon highway transforms from a gridlock of angst to a festival fairground. Aside from the occasional hospital shuttle or security vehicle, these roads, which are so hostile to pedestrians during the year, return to the people. Groups of people play poker in the right-hand lane, others do yoga under the sign directing traffic to Holon. In an underground passageway, teenagers write their names in the soot that has built up on the walls.During the day, the highway becomes a river of people biking and walking. Parents teach their children how to ride bikes for the first time. Couples rollerblade down the middle of the street holding hands. The buildings that rise on either side of the highway seem to shrink down to human size, now that people are no longer ensconced in their vehicles. With no tinted windows and air conditioning to separate us, people mingle freely on the roadways, greeting neighbors, meeting up with friends.This is my favorite day of the year in Israel, when cars are gone and people become masters of the roads, when there is silence that unfurls across the country. There is finally a chance to stop and breathe, to take stock of the year that has passed, and see the beauty that still lives underneath all of the smog.Last year after Kol Nidre services in Jerusalem I biked back to Tel Aviv, my own private prayer through the pedals, wordless but spiritual just the same. The magical descent after the Kiryat Ya’arim exit took my breath away: I coasted down and down, picking up speed, weaving in between the dotted white lines of the lanes, completely, utterly alone.Among the 8 million people in this country, all of them breathing, screaming, texting, driving, living every day, suddenly it was just me on Route 1: just me pedaling alone under the orange light. Sometimes when a street light was out I could stop in the puddle of darkness and see more stars than I ever expected to see in the center of Israel. In the silence, I saw mice and rats and heard wolves and a wild boar, a veritable safari along the highway.The next day in my neighborhood in South Tel Aviv I hopscotched between synagogues: Moroccan, Afghani, Iraqi, Persian, Ashkenazi, listening to my neighbors pray with all their soul and all their being, then biked across Tel Aviv to see so many families and children outside in the streets, wading in the HaBima fountain or playing tag along the yellow lines of Bograshov Street.Pedaling between the worlds of Israel, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, religious and secular, helps me sweep away the cobwebs of this difficult land, uncovering the beauty inscribed in each place.As dusk falls at the end of Yom Kippur, the cars will begin to return to the roads, the silence will fade away to the din of normal life. Taxis will honk and buses will screech, people will yell at each other to get out of the way. The bikes and pedestrians will retreat to the side and the vehicles will again assert their dominance, as the high-rises along the highway stretch back up toward impossible heights.I will hang up my bike helmet next to the door and turn on my phone, to immerse myself back in the never-ending news cycle.But the silence will stay inside of me, the memory of a day that means so many different things to different people, but means something to almost everyone. Four members of an Israeli family who were injured in a fatal car crash in Georgia Tuesday were flown to Israel on Wednesday, officials said. They were taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem.The mother was in serious condition and underwent an operation. The father suffered light injuries. Their two children were in moderate and light condition.Two of the couple’s children were killed in the crash. Their bodies will be flown home in the coming days.The family’s car had plunged into a gorge in the remote mountainous Tusheti region in the northeast of part of the country. Officials have said a storm and heavy fog that hit the area at the time may have been the cause of the accident. The Israeli Foreign Ministry dispatched diplomats to the site of the accident to provide assistance.Reports identified the victims as the Grinfeld family from the settlement of Ma’ale Mikhmas in the central West Bank. The two children who were killed were identified as Ahinoam and Nevo. Ahinoam was in 5th grade, and Nevo was in kindergarten.Georgia, which sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia in the Caucuses, has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for Israelis in recent years, drawn by the hiking and its spectacular mountain scenery.

But as in every year, injuries were not far behind, with MDA treating 220 for cycling-related crashes.Another 249 people were treated for weakness and fainting spells due to the fast, which includes a ban on drinking water; 11 required resuscitation.Three people were killed and two injured in a car accident near Dimona. Another 20 were injured in vehicular accidents and 20 in violent incidents.Magen David Adom had deployed hundreds of extra medics, paramedics, ambulances and volunteers throughout the country in anticipation of an influx of emergency situations.“Thousands of people suffer on the fast from dehydration, fainting and road accidents,” MDA Director Eli Bin said before the fast. Bin said he had ordered the organization onto its highest level of alert.The organization also routinely takes dozens of women in labor to hospitals on Yom Kippur.Almost all public services shut down in Israel over the 25-hour fast and most roads are deserted. There’s something about an empty highway, a ribbon of black cutting through the night, that will move you deep in your soul. Kerouac knew this, as the miles of empty asphalt spooled under his wheels. But there is nothing as magical and spiritual as the empty highways of Israel on Yom Kippur, a silence that fills up every corner of your being.As a journalist, covering the wounds and scars of this country, you can find yourself dripping in sarcasm and cynicism, questioning why you chose to move to this loud, angry, hate-filled place. Nothing is holy in the Holy Land: everything is political, steeped in divisive conflict. Everything you say or write will somehow cause anger, heartache, hatred.Yom Kippur is not free from conflicts. There are the teenagers in Jerusalem who yearly throw rocks at Arab cars on Hebron Road, and there were the 2008 riots in Acre when an Arab man drove through a religious Jewish neighborhood blaring music.During the past two years, Yom Kippur also coincided with Eid al-Adha, when Muslims typically drive from family party to family party, meaning that just as the Jews stop driving, eating and listening to music for religious reasons, the Muslims did the exact opposite. This usually happens once ever 33 years, but quirks of the Jewish leap year and the fact that the faiths use different lunar calendars meant it happened twice in a row in 2014 and 2015. Due to the confluence of the holidays, religious and interfaith leaders tried to encourage both sides to be tolerant of their neighbors in unprecedented statements from Jewish and Muslim leaders.But aside from the sporadic incidences of rock throwing and riots, Yom Kippur is separate from the rest of a year, alone on a pedestal. The fact that almost no Jewish Israelis drive on Yom Kippur shocks me every year. Really? No one drives? Israelis hold nothing sacred. Except, perhaps, this.For one day a year, everyone stops. The roads that we hurry down become empty scrolls, open to adventures and play.In Tel Aviv, it becomes the holiday of the bicycle.At night, the Ayalon highway transforms from a gridlock of angst to a festival fairground. Aside from the occasional hospital shuttle or security vehicle, these roads, which are so hostile to pedestrians during the year, return to the people. Groups of people play poker in the right-hand lane, others do yoga under the sign directing traffic to Holon. In an underground passageway, teenagers write their names in the soot that has built up on the walls.During the day, the highway becomes a river of people biking and walking. Parents teach their children how to ride bikes for the first time. Couples rollerblade down the middle of the street holding hands. The buildings that rise on either side of the highway seem to shrink down to human size, now that people are no longer ensconced in their vehicles. With no tinted windows and air conditioning to separate us, people mingle freely on the roadways, greeting neighbors, meeting up with friends.This is my favorite day of the year in Israel, when cars are gone and people become masters of the roads, when there is silence that unfurls across the country. There is finally a chance to stop and breathe, to take stock of the year that has passed, and see the beauty that still lives underneath all of the smog.Last year after Kol Nidre services in Jerusalem I biked back to Tel Aviv, my own private prayer through the pedals, wordless but spiritual just the same. The magical descent after the Kiryat Ya’arim exit took my breath away: I coasted down and down, picking up speed, weaving in between the dotted white lines of the lanes, completely, utterly alone.Among the 8 million people in this country, all of them breathing, screaming, texting, driving, living every day, suddenly it was just me on Route 1: just me pedaling alone under the orange light. Sometimes when a street light was out I could stop in the puddle of darkness and see more stars than I ever expected to see in the center of Israel. In the silence, I saw mice and rats and heard wolves and a wild boar, a veritable safari along the highway.The next day in my neighborhood in South Tel Aviv I hopscotched between synagogues: Moroccan, Afghani, Iraqi, Persian, Ashkenazi, listening to my neighbors pray with all their soul and all their being, then biked across Tel Aviv to see so many families and children outside in the streets, wading in the HaBima fountain or playing tag along the yellow lines of Bograshov Street.Pedaling between the worlds of Israel, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, religious and secular, helps me sweep away the cobwebs of this difficult land, uncovering the beauty inscribed in each place.As dusk falls at the end of Yom Kippur, the cars will begin to return to the roads, the silence will fade away to the din of normal life. Taxis will honk and buses will screech, people will yell at each other to get out of the way. The bikes and pedestrians will retreat to the side and the vehicles will again assert their dominance, as the high-rises along the highway stretch back up toward impossible heights.I will hang up my bike helmet next to the door and turn on my phone, to immerse myself back in the never-ending news cycle.But the silence will stay inside of me, the memory of a day that means so many different things to different people, but means something to almost everyone. Four members of an Israeli family who were injured in a fatal car crash in Georgia Tuesday were flown to Israel on Wednesday, officials said. They were taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem.The mother was in serious condition and underwent an operation. The father suffered light injuries. Their two children were in moderate and light condition.Two of the couple’s children were killed in the crash. Their bodies will be flown home in the coming days.The family’s car had plunged into a gorge in the remote mountainous Tusheti region in the northeast of part of the country. Officials have said a storm and heavy fog that hit the area at the time may have been the cause of the accident. The Israeli Foreign Ministry dispatched diplomats to the site of the accident to provide assistance.Reports identified the victims as the Grinfeld family from the settlement of Ma’ale Mikhmas in the central West Bank. The two children who were killed were identified as Ahinoam and Nevo. Ahinoam was in 5th grade, and Nevo was in kindergarten.Georgia, which sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia in the Caucuses, has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for Israelis in recent years, drawn by the hiking and its spectacular mountain scenery.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Americans should vote for Donald Trump as president next month or risk being dragged into a nuclear war, according to a Russian ultra-nationalist ally of President Vladimir Putin who likes to compare himself to the U.S. Republican candidate.Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a flamboyant veteran lawmaker known for his fiery rhetoric, told Reuters in an interview that Trump was the only person able to de-escalate dangerous tensions between Moscow and Washington.By contrast, Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton could spark World War Three, said Zhirinovsky, who received a top state award from Putin after his pro-Kremlin Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third in Russia's parliamentary election last month.Many Russians regard Zhirinovsky as a clownish figure who makes outspoken statements to grab attention but he is also widely viewed as a faithful servant of Kremlin policy, sometimes used to float radical opinions to test public reaction."Relations between Russia and the United States can't get any worse. The only way they can get worse is if a war starts," said Zhirinovsky, speaking in his huge office on the 10th floor of Russia's State Duma, or lower house of parliament."Americans voting for a president on Nov. 8 must realise that they are voting for peace on Planet Earth if they vote for Trump. But if they vote for Hillary it's war. It will be a short movie. There will be Hiroshimas and Nagasakis everywhere."Zhirinovsky's comments coincide with deep disagreements between Washington and Moscow over Syria and Ukraine and after the White House last week accused Russia of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organisations.Even as WikiLeaks released another trove of internal documents from Clinton’s campaign on Wednesday, Putin insisted his country was not involved in an effort to influence the U.S. presidential election.-THE RUSSIAN TRUMP?-Zhirinovsky likes to shock liberal public opinion and he has frequently heaped scorn on the West, which he and other Russian nationalists regard as decadent, hypocritical and corrupted by political correctness.His combative style, reminiscent of Trump's, ensures him plenty of television air time and millions of votes in Russian elections, often from the kind of blue-collar workers who are the bedrock of the U.S. Republican candidate's support.Zhirinovsky once proposed blocking off mostly Muslim southern Russia with a barbed wire fence, echoing Trump's call for a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.Zhirinovsky, who said he met Trump in New York in 2002, revels in his similarities with the American businessman - they are the same age, favour coarse, sometimes misogynistic language and boast about putting their own country first. Zhirinovsky has even said he wants a DNA test to see if he is related to Trump.But unlike Trump, a billionaire real estate developer who casts himself as the anti-establishment candidate in the U.S. presidential race with no past political experience, Zhirinovsky is a consummate political insider who has sat in the Duma for more than two decades.Putin has also praised Trump as "very talented", while the Republican candidate has said the Kremlin boss is a better leader than U.S. President Barack Obama. Clinton has accused Trump of being too cosy with Putin and questioned his business interests in Russia.In other comments that have delighted Moscow, Trump has questioned the value of NATO for Washington, has spoken ambiguously about Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea and suggested that the United States under his leadership would adopt a more isolationist foreign policy."He (Trump) won't care about Syria, Libya and Iraq and why an earth should America interfere in these countries? And Ukraine. Who needs Ukraine?," said Zhirinovsky, who once counted himself a friend of Iraq's Saddam Hussein and Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and whose deaths he still laments."Trump will have a brilliant chance to make relations more peaceful ... He's the only one who can do this," he said, adding that Trump could even win a Nobel peace prize.-CLINTON "CRAVES POWER"-In contrast, Zhirinovsky described Clinton as "an evil mother-in law" and said her record as secretary of state under Obama in 2009-2013 showed she was unfit to lead her country."She craves power. Her view is that Hillary is the most important person on the planet, that America is an exceptional country, as Barack Obama said," said Zhirinovsky. "That's dangerous. She could start a nuclear war."In typically chauvinistic remarks, Zhirinovsky said Clinton's gender should also bar her from the presidency."Most Americans should choose Trump because men have been leading for millions of year. You can't take the risk of having one of the richest, most powerful countries led by a woman president," he said.Asked about lewd comments Trump made about women in 2005 that have harmed his campaign, Zhirinovsky defended the Republican: "Men all round the world sometimes say such things that are just for their comrades. We must only consider his business (and political) qualities."Though Putin and Trump have never met, Zhirinovsky said he believed they could establish a close working relationship, adding: "Victory for Trump would be a gift to humanity. Paris (AFP) - French President Francois Hollande spoke Wednesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin about organising a summit on the Ukraine conflict, French officials said.The leaders had a telephone conversation about the conditions for a summit, which will also include Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and will be held in Berlin "very soon", although no date has yet been set, a statement from the French presidency said.The aim was "to try to make progress on a negotiated political solution" to the conflict in eastern Ukraine in which more than 9,600 people have been killed.Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of fuelling the fighting, but Moscow denies government involvement.A peace deal brokered by Germany and France in February 2015 reduced the fighting but has failed to stop it.France said the conditions for a solution remained a lasting ceasefire, speeding up disarmament and obtaining unrestricted access for Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OCSE) observers.The West also wants guarantees that local elections "can be held within the framework of Ukrainian law and the standards of the OSCE".France is pursuing efforts to organise the summit despite tensions with Russia after Putin cancelled a visit to Paris scheduled for next week.France has said Putin pulled out after Hollande insisted they hold talks during the visit on Russia's role in the Syrian conflict.Russia said Wednesday it would hold discussions on the Syria conflict with the United States and key regional powers this weekend, the first meeting on the conflict since Washington broke off bilateral ceasefire negotiations.
