Israel is bracing for sandstorms and hazy conditions as a strong wind system moves in from north Africa Sunday.According to forecasters, Sunday will see unseasonably dry and hot conditions in the center and south of the country.Strong winds will kick up sandstorms in the southern Negev desert and hamsin, or sirocco, conditions, including low visibility and high levels of air pollution, in the center. The Ministry of Environmental Protection issued a statement early Sunday morning warning that individuals with heightened sensitivity to air quality, including those with heart and lung diseases, pregnant women and small children, should avoid spending time outside on Sunday. Healthy individuals should also avoid intensive physical exercise outdoors during the day.Rain is expected in the afternoon, but will be concentrated in the Galilee and other parts of the country’s north, turning into thunderstorms by evening. The hamsin is expected to break nationwide by the evening hours, with light rain expected to move southward, relieving the heat wave.

Jordan releases soldier who killed 7 Israeli schoolgirls in 1997 massacre-Ahmed Daqamseh, who served 20 years in prison, received at family home in northern town of Irbid with celebration and song-By AP and Times of Israel staff March 12, 2017, 2:06 am Updated: March 12, 2017, 6:46 am

AMMAN, Jordan — A Jordanian soldier who killed seven Israeli schoolgirls during a class trip to his country was released Sunday, after serving 20 years in prison, an official said.Ahmed Daqamseh had killed the eighth graders in a 1997 shooting rampage at the scenic “Island of Peace” border post where he was stationed. Seven other girls were wounded at the time. The late-night release comes a day before the 20th anniversary of the massacre. The release could raise tensions between Israel and Jordan. In 2011, Israel summoned Jordan’s ambassador to express anger after the kingdom’s justice minister at the time called for Daqamseh’s release.Daqamseh was received early Sunday at his family home in the northern Jordanian town of Irbid with celebrations, including music and singing around his home. Media outlets in the kingdom carried photos of the celebrations.Daqamseh is considered a hero by many in the country. Israeli media reported early Sunday that Jordanian authorities’ decision to release him in the middle of the night, at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, was intended to prevent larger celebrations from being held for him in his hometown.Amer Sartawi, a spokesman for Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, said Daqamseh was freed early Sunday.A military court deemed him mentally unstable at the time and sentenced him to life in prison, which in Jordan typically means 25 years. Jordanian lawmakers had lobbied for his early release. After the shooting, Jordan’s King Hussein — the late father of the current king, Abdullah II — rushed to Israel and paid condolence visits to the girls’ families, a gesture that touched many Israelis at the time. The shooting came three years after Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty.

France’s Fillon slams own party for ‘anti-Semitic’ election cartoon-Tweeted caricature of frontrunner Emmanuel Macron depicted the former banker with a hooked nose and top hat, slicing a cigar with a red sickle-By AFP and Times of Israel staff March 12, 2017, 4:32 am

France’s center-right presidential candidate Francois Fillon denounced on Saturday an “anti-Semitic” caricature of rival Emmanuel Macron put out by his own Les Républicains party. The cartoon, quickly taken down after it was posted on the party’s Twitter account on Friday, depicted the centrist Macron, a former banker, with a hooked nose and top hat, carrying a red sickle with which he was cutting a cigar. Associates and supporters from the French left and center were shown around him.Fillon, a former prime minister, has lagged in polls amid allegations that he had secured fictitious public service jobs for his wife and children. He was scathing Saturday in his criticism of the cartoon.“The fight is tough but it must remain dignified,” he said in a statement, vowing not to “tolerate that his own party is broadcasting caricatures containing the codes of anti-Semitic propaganda.”He urged disciplinary measured be taken against any party officials responsible for the post. From the Macron camp, the candidate’s spokesman Benjamin Griveaux called it “extremely worrying” that the caricature “draws on the anti-Semitic imagination.”Faced with a public outcry over the cartoon, the Republicains party offered its “apologies” on Friday night and, just six hours after it had gone up, replaced the picture attached to the original tweet with a simple photo of Mr. Macron.A poll published this weekend saw the centrist Macron in first place ahead of the first round of the French presidential election set for April 23, ahead of second-place far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. Fillon is in third place.

Dutch police use water cannon, horses on Turkish rally-Rotterdam scuffles ensue after Turkey ministers refused entry into country to campaign ahead of April referendum-By AFP March 12, 2017, 3:47 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Police moved in early Sunday using water cannons and horses to break up protests in Rotterdam which erupted after Dutch authorities barred Turkish ministers from visiting. After several hours of a calm, but tense demonstration by more than 1,000 people outside the Turkish consulate, AFP correspondents saw police, some carrying out mounted charges on horseback, begin to forcefully disperse the protesters. The port city’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb told reporters police had moved in to try to break up “a few groups,” but that the situation in the city center was stabilizing as police “try to get everyone to return home.”But after initially dispersing, the crowd began to gather in smaller groups again, with the police once again moving in, an AFP correspondent said. The move came as the city’s authorities expelled Turkey’s Family Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya and escorted her back to the German border. She had crossed over several hours earlier aiming to attend a rally in support of the Turkish government’s planned April referendum, despite angry Dutch pleas to Ankara to keep its ministers away.Earlier, Dutch authorities had also refused Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu permission to land in the city for a rally to gather support for a referendum on boosting the powers of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
