All 100 US senators to UN: End ‘unacceptable’ anti-Israel bias-Letter to António Guterres, with unanimous Senate support, demands wide-ranging reforms of international body-By Times of Israel staff April 28, 2017, 11:40 am

All 100 US senators signed a letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres Thursday demanding an end to the “unacceptable” anti-Israel bias in the international body. The strongly worded letter, authored by Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) and released on Friday, was signed by every member of the US Senate.“Through words and actions, we urge you to ensure that Israel is treated neither better nor worse than any other UN member in good standing,” the letter said, describing the “continued targeting of Israel” in the world body as “unacceptable.”The letter urged several concrete steps to improve Israel’s treatment by the organization, singling out for criticism UNRWA, which deals with Palestinian refugees; the UN Human Rights Council for its singular focus on the Jewish state; and UNESCO, for denying Jewish ties to holy sites in Jerusalem. The senators called on the UN to eliminate or reform “a number of standing committees, which far too often serve no purpose other than to attack Israel and inspire the anti-Israel boycott, sanctions and divestment (BDS) movement.”While praising UNESCO for its important work on Holocaust education, the senators criticized the body for allowing its member states to “continue to advance measures that target Israel and deny the Jewish and Christian connections to Jerusalem.”The letter further stated that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) “must pursue reforms or risk significant consequences.”Jerusalem considers UNRWA one of the most problematic UN bodies. Israeli officials accuse the organization of colluding with the Hamas terror organization in Gaza and of facilitating anti-Jewish incitement and even terrorism against Israeli civilians in its school textbooks. More than one-third of UNRWA’s budget comes from the US.And “most troubling” of all, the senators maintained, is the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which is “charged with shining a light on gross human rights violations.”The letter states that “the UNHRC — whose membership currently includes some of the world’s worst human rights violators — instead devotes time to unwarranted attacks against Israel.”The senators referred specifically to permanent agenda item VII which is devoted solely to lambasting Israel, “even as numerous other countries, including some represented on the Council, commit egregious human rights abuses against their citizens on a daily basis.”Although there is no direct threat of ending US funding, the letter notes that the US is the major contributor to international body.“As both the UN’s principal founding member and its largest contributor, the United States should insist on reform,” the letter said. “We are deeply committed to international leadership and to advancing respect for human rights. But continued targeting of Israel by the UN Human Rights Council and other UN entities is unacceptable.”The letter ended by saying that “the current situation must change. We urge you to engage member states in a comprehensive effort to directly confront and root out this bias.”The US Senate move was welcomed by Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.“We thank our friends in the United States Senate for their unanimous and bipartisan support for Israel. Once again, America has stood strongly by Israel, and stood up for truth and justice. It is time to finally put an end to the UN’s biased approach towards Israel,” Danon said in a statement.Earlier this week, Guterres said the UN must rectify its bias against Israel at the United Nations.Speaking to delegates at the World Jewish Congress’s plenary assembly in New York, Guterres on Sunday vowed to stand up against anti-Israel bias at the world organization and said the Jewish state must be treated like any other member state. The UN chief said that as secretary-general, he would be “on the front lines in the fight against anti-Semitism,” which he warned was on the rise in Europe and America, and called “absolutely unacceptable.”He promised to “make sure that the United Nations is able to conduct all possible actions for anti-Semitism to be condemned, and if possible eradicated from the face of the earth.”US President Donald Trump has made defending the Jewish state a core tenet of his foreign policy. “I reject unfair and one-sided actions against Israel at the United Nations,” he said during his February 15 press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley in March declared that “there’s a “new sheriff in town,” announcing that “the days of Israel-bashing are over.” If the organization’s member states continue obsessing about and demonizing the Jewish state, “we’re going to kick them every single time,” she pledged at the annual AIPAC conference.During a meeting at the State Department in March, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman urged US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to consider quitting the Geneva-based UNHRC and to stop funding UNRWA.Earlier that month, US envoy to the Human Rights Council Erin Barclay, criticized the council for its outsized focus on Israel.“Regrettably, too many of the actions of this council do not support these universal principles. Indeed, they contradict them,” she said.“No other nation is the focus of an entire agenda item… The obsession with Israel… is the largest threat to this council’s credibility,” added Barclay, a career diplomat. “It limits the good we can accomplish by making a mockery of this council. The United States will oppose any effort to delegitimize or isolate Israel.”Raphael Ahren contributed to this report.

Nobody was really sure they had even captured the 'real thing'-50 years later, 3 soldiers reenact, remember their iconic Six-Day war photo-Picture of paratroopers Zion Karasenti, Haim Oshri, and Itzik Yifat has become defining image of Israel regaining Western Wall; they’re still friends and they still argue-By Times of Israel staff April 29, 2017, 10:57 am

The David Rubinger photograph of three paratroopers standing in silent awe in front of the recaptured Western Wall after the battle for Jerusalem in 1967 has become the defining image of one of the most significant moments in Israel’s history. With the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War approaching, Zion Karasenti, Haim Oshri, and Dr. Itizik Yifat returned to the Old City this week to remember the moment.Karasenti, Oshri, and Yifat described to Channel 2 News how they, as 20-something reserve duty soldiers, inadvertently became the symbol of a nation fulfilling a 2,000 year dream.“There were snipers everywhere, especially from overhead. They could have thrown a grenade on us and finished us,” Karasenti recalled of the battle for the Jerusalem holy site.Since none of them had ever been to the Western Wall, which had been under Jordanian rule since 1948, they admitted that, at first, nobody was really sure they had even captured the “real thing.”“Everyone talked about the Kotel [Western Wall] all the time, but we were new and we had never been there. That day was the first time any of us had ever been there,” Oshri said.At the time there was only a narrow corridor separating the Western Wall of the Temple Mount from the nearby houses and buildings of the Old City.“When they [our colleagues] raised the flag over the Western Wall, that was our sign,” Karasenti said.“After the 48 hours of battle, we were tired and sweaty, our uniforms were dusty and bloodied, but when we walked down the stairs and saw the stones of the Western Wall, a lot of the guys started crying.“It was an extraordinary thing, its hard to describe,” Karasenti said.It wasn’t until after the war was over that the three men realized the picture of them taken by legendary photographer Rubinger had become famous worldwide.“After the war, my neighbor who was a brand new immigrant from Poland, came running out to show me that my photo was in the Polish newspapers. I was shocked,” said Yifat.“We did become a symbol of our strength,” Yifat said.Karasenti said he too was surprised to see it on the front page of the Haaretz daily the following week.“I showed it to my girlfriend at the time, I couldn’t believe it, I told her ‘look, someone took our picture!'”To many, the 50th anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War — in which Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula –is a bittersweet one. It represents half a century since the Old City and other historic Jewish sites returned to Jewish hands, but also half a century of Israeli military rule over the Palestinians.Asked about the dual nature of the jubilee, the men appear to be as divided as Israeli society.“There is something to be said for that [calling the image the start of the tragedy of the state of Israel] Yifat said. “I don’t believe that we should be ruling over another nation.”“How can you say that as an Israeli who fought for something after 2,000 years of longing?” Karasenti shot back. “We returned the heart of the Jewish people to this land.”Retorted Yifat: “What am I supposed to tell my grandchildren? That there will be war every year?”Despite their political differences, the three men, now in their 70s, say they have remained close friends over the years. As Karasenti, Oshri, and Yifat approached the wall to take a picture this week, a passerby stopped the three to thank them.“All of the people that are here right now are only here because of you,” this man said. “It’s you, and all of the other soldiers who fought then. This is all thanks to your courage and your faith. So again, thank you so much.”

Abbas meets with King Abdullah ahead of White House visit-Sit-down in Amman to coordinate positions comes a day after similar meeting between PA leader and Egypt’s president-By Tamar Pileggi April 30, 2017, 4:50 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Sunday in Amman in order to coordinate positions ahead of Abbas’s meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House this week.According to the Hebrew-language Ynet news site, Abbas and Abdullah agreed during the meeting that a two-state outcome is the “only solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They were also said to have discussed ways to reboot peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. The meeting of the two leaders came less than 24 hours after Abbas held similar talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo.Sissi issued a similar statement after that meeting, affirming his country’s commitment to the two-state solution and urging the US to “play an active role in efforts to resume negotiations.”During his visit to Washington on Wednesday, Abbas is set to hold a series of high-level meetings with Trump and other senior US administration officials in an effort to revive peace talks.Trump has made Middle East peacemaking a priority, meeting at the White House in February with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and earlier this month with Sissi and Abdullah. The US president is expected to make his first visit to Israel at the end of May.His peace envoy, Jason Greenblatt, has made two trips to the region since Trump assumed the presidency in January in an effort to jumpstart the long-dormant negotiations.Trump spoke to Abbas for the first time over the phone in March, when he invited him to the White House. After meeting with Greenblatt in Ramallah in March, Abbas said he believed a “historic” peace deal with Israel was possible with Trump in office.Greenblatt told Arab foreign ministers a week later that Trump was committed to reaching a deal between Israel and the Palestinians that would “reverberate” throughout the Middle East and the world. In an interview published last week by the Japanese news site Asahi Shimbun, Abbas expressed willingness to meet Netanyahu in Washington under the auspices of the Trump administration.“I am ready to meet the prime minister of Israel anytime in Washington under the patronage of President Trump,” he said. After Trump’s planned first visit to the region in late May, he will reportedly be followed by his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the United Nations. The latter is reportedly set to come in June.

Pope repeats refugee ‘concentration camps’ remarks-Challenged over criticism of the comparison, Francis doubles down-By AP April 30, 2017, 12:52 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE — Pope Francis repeated on Saturday that some migrant holding centers in Europe amount to “concentration camps,” even after Jewish groups urged him to stop using the loaded term.A German reporter asked Francis if he had made a linguistic slip when he first made the remarks last week, adding that they had been met with shock in Germany. Speaking en route home from Egypt, Francis appeared to not appreciate the controversy, saying that there are some refugee holding centers where migrants are penned in and prevented from leaving. He said: “There are refugee camps that are true concentration camps.”The American Jewish Committee sharply criticized the remarks and urged Francis to use a different choice of words. In a statement last week, AJC said that while the conditions in some migrant centers might be difficult “The Nazis and their allies erected and used concentration camps for slave labor and the extermination of millions of people during World War II. There is no comparison to the magnitude of that tragedy.”

Battling anti-Semitic image, Le Pen quietly visits Holocaust memorial-Presidential candidate lays wreath at Marseille plaque to victims rounded up by Nazis, days after allegations her deputy denied genocide-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies April 30, 2017, 2:53 pm

French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen placed a wreath on a Marseille monument to French victims of the Holocaust Sunday morning, weeks after she drew sharp criticism by claiming that France had no responsibility for the fate of its Jewish citizens deported to Nazi Germany. The low-key wreath-laying took place without the media present at a memorial to 30 Jewish women and children who were rounded up by the Gestapo in 1943, to mark France’s Memorial Day for Victims of Deportation. She was accompanied by a local politician. A picture of the wreath-laying was tweeted by a campaign worker. Her rival, centrist Emmanuel Macron of the En Marche movement, is due to visit a Holocaust memorial near Paris later Sunday.À Marseille, @MLP_officiel et @Stephane_Ravier déposent une gerbe pour la journée nationale du souvenir des victimes de la déportation pic.twitter.com/IjOo5D8xwg— Kévin Pfeffer 🇫🇷 (@K_Pfeffer) April 30, 2017-Le Pen has worked to purge the hard-right National Front (FN) party of its anti-Semitic old guard, including her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, but has been bedeviled by statements casting doubts over the efforts, including her own claim that France wasn’t responsible for aiding Germany in deporting citizens to their deaths. The populist candidate said April 10 that France was not responsible for the roundup of Jews during World War II. She said she “considers that France and the Republic were in London” during the war, with Gen. Charles de Gaulle who oversaw the Resistance.Last week, allegations emerged that the man chosen to lead the party while she focuses on the presidential campaign, Jean-Francois Jalkh, had questioned the Holocaust and the use of gas chambers to kill millions of Jews.Le Pen — who once called Nazi death camps the “height of barbary” — firmly denied that anyone in the party leadership would cast doubt on the extermination of six million Jews and others, some deported from France.“Let things be very clear. I abhor these theories,” she said in an interview on BFM-TV.“There is no one in the leadership of the National Front who defends this kind of thesis,” she said.Jalkh firmly denies French media reports that he questioned whether Zyklon B poison gas was used in death camps. Lawyer David Dassa-Le Deist said he was filing a defamation suit against Le Monde newspaper, which identified his client as a negationist, someone who denies the Holocaust. However another party stalwart, Steeve Briois, mayor of Le Pen’s northern bastion, Henin-Beaumont, was named to replace Jalkh as temporary party chief while Le Pen campaigns in the critical final stretch ahead of the May 7 vote.Even without the cloud of anti-Semitism casting its shadow anew on the party, Le Pen, who took over the National Front in 2011, faces claims of racism for evoking fears that Muslims want to conquer France.French emotions around France’s history of collaborating with the Nazis remain complex seven decades after the war’s end. The country has never undergone a national atonement. In 1995, President Jacques Chirac boldly declared that the collaborationist Vichy regime — which helped in the deportation of 75,000 French Jews — was the French state. However, many still view the actions of Vichy as a historical anomaly. Some still salute its leader, Philippe Petain, a hero of World War I.

He sparked controversy on a visit to Tunisia in 2012 by saying that “seculars and liberals” are “apostates,” and describing female genital mutilation as an “aesthetic operation.”If he returns to Egypt, he would be retried on the same charges.— Agencies.
