Kohanim are forbidden from marrying converts or divorcees. Also, the public nature and honor associated with giving the priestly blessing in synagogue make identifying kohanim a significant part of the Jewish community.Similarly, genetics has been unable to find markers for the individual tribes of Israel.Though “Jews have genetic markers that show that they are from the Middle East,” Rabbi Kleiman explained, “There were many different nations living in the region. Even if we can show a common ancestry with Abraham, he had two sons. We can show a common ancestry but are unable to find markers for specific tribal haplotypes (genes passed from father to son).”The rabbi noted that genetics will not have the final word. According to Jewish tradition, Elijah the prophet will appear before the Messiah to clarify precisely this issue: who is a priest and who is not, and the tribe to which each Jew belongs.Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of Hashem. And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers; lest I come and smite the land with utter destruction. Malachi 3:23-Nonetheless, the rabbi does not feel that this final clarification will render his work futile. Whale carcass rotting on Newfoundland beach to be removed after nearly two weeks-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 3, 2017

OUTER COVE, N.L. — The putrid carcass of a humpback whale that has been rotting on a beach in Newfoundland and Labrador for nearly two weeks is set to be removed.Mayor John Kennedy of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, a small community near St. John's, said the dead whale washed ashore on May 22. He said the carcass has been hemmed in near the shore of Outer Cove by a slab of ice,  preventing it from floating back out to sea. Kennedy said the animal is estimated to have died a month before its unwelcome arrival in his town. Spectators have flocked to see the approximately six-week-old decomposing humpback, but Kennedy said he doesn't think there's much to look at, or perhaps more pungently, smell."I can't for the life of me see the fascination," Kennedy said. "If you've ever smelled any kind of a dead animal, just realize there's 20,000 pounds (9070 kilograms) of dead animal there."The blubbery remains have washed over the beach, giving it an oily sheen, said Kennedy, forcing him to consider declaring a state of emergency due to health concerns."It was crawling with bacteria," said Kennedy. "I couldn't take a chance of someone going down there and catching something off of that. It's not right."Kennedy said it has taken days of bureaucratic wrangling to arrange for the disposal of the partially submerged corpse. Federal agencies resisted taking responsibility for the bloated mess, he said, and the town of 20,000 people doesn't have to resources to get rid of the remains on its own."This is government red tape at its finest," said Kennedy.  "It took two weeks of basically publicly shaming the federal government."Kennedy said the town is working with the federal fisheries department to pull the carcass from the water and take it to be buried at a hazardous waste site. He said the removal should be complete by mid-next week, weather permitting.The question of who will foot the bill has yet to be worked out, according to Kennedy, but the mayor said cost isn't his chief concern right now."We just want to get it done," said Kennedy. A Canadian was among those killed in a terror attack on London Bridge and a bustling market in the U.K. capital, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.Trudeau said in a written statement released Sunday that the government wouldn't be commenting further on the death out of respect for the family.The attack began at about 10 p.m. local time Saturday, when three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, police said. The attackers, wielding blades and knives, then ran down a set of stairs into Borough Market where they stabbed people in several different restaurants.The attack lasted about eight minutes, police said, but seven people were killed and at least 48 were hospitalized.The attackers were shot dead by police, and 12 people have been arrested in Barking in east London. Raids are going on elsewhere in the city.The Canadian government is advising citizens to be vigilant in the wake of the attack. LONDON — British police arrested a dozen people Sunday in a widening terrorism investigation after attackers used a van and large knives to kill seven people in London, and the county's major political parties temporarily suspended campaigning with only days to go before the general election.Prime Minister Theresa May said the vote would take place as scheduled Thursday because "violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process."The assault unfolded over a few terrifying minutes late Saturday, starting when a rented van veered off the road and barrelled into pedestrians on busy London Bridge. Three men then got out of the vehicle with large knives and attacked people at bars and restaurants in nearby Borough Market until they were fatally shot by police."They went 'This is for Allah,' and they had a woman on the floor. They were stabbing her," witness Gerard Vowls said.Florin Morariu, a Romanian chef who works in the Bread Ahead bakery, said he saw people running and some fainting. Then two people approached another person and "began to stick the knife in ... and then I froze and I didn't know what to do."He said he managed to get near one attacker and "hit him around the head" with a bread basket."There was a car with a loudspeaker saying 'go, go' and they (police) threw a grenade. ... and then I ran," he said.London police said officers killed the attackers within eight minutes of arriving at the scene. MANILA, Philippines — The lone suspect behind a deadly attack on a casino and shopping complex in Manila was a heavily indebted Filipino gambling addict, police said Sunday, bolstering their claim that the assault was not terrorism-related.The man's immediate family confirmed his identity as Jessie Carlos — a married father of three and former Finance Department employee who owed more than $80,000.The revelations confirm that "this is not an act of terrorism," Manila police chief Oscar Albayalde told a news conference. "This incident is confined to the act of one man alone as we have always said."The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Friday's attack on Resorts World Manila, where 37 patrons and employees died, mostly from smoke inhalation as they tried to hide in one of the casino's VIP rooms on the second floor. But authorities have rejected the militants' claim, saying there is no evidence to back it and pointing out that the assailant shot no civilians during the two-hour ordeal despite being heavily armed.The Philippines has faced a Muslim insurgency in the country's south for decades, and Manila has been on edge since government forces began battling Islamic militants who besieged the southern city of Marawi.On Sunday, Carlos' father told reporters that his son had no connections to terrorism. Carlos' distraught mother, Teodora, wept and asked for forgiveness."We're asking for your apology. We can't accept ourselves that my son became like this, he was a very kind son," she said. BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Syrian militias said they seized a major dam on the Euphrates river from Islamic State on Sunday, their latest gain as they push towards Raqqa city.The Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, said they captured the Baath Dam in the morning, renaming it Freedom Dam. The hydroelectric facility lies 22 kilometers upstream of Raqqa, where Islamic State's operations in Syria are based.The spokesman for the Kurdish YPG militia, the SDF's key component, said fighters were combing nearby villages for mines and shoring up their defensive lines. "The dam has been completely liberated," Nouri Mahmoud said.The advance means the SDF now hold all three major dams along the Euphrates, after gaining control of Syria's largest dam last month.With air strikes and special forces from the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF have been encircling Raqqa, which Islamic State has used as a hub to plan attacks abroad.The operation to storm the city will start in the next "few days", Mahmoud said on Saturday.
