Israel dismisses efforts to derail upcoming Africa summit-Palestinians, Moroccans and South Africans dismayed over Togo gathering, at which PM will seek to boost diplomatic and economic ties-By Raphael Ahren August 7, 2017, 4:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israel this week played down pro-Palestinian efforts to obstruct an upcoming Africa-Israel summit in Togo, with officials expressing confidence that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with many African leaders keen on promoting political and economical ties with the Jewish state there.Togo is set to invite all 54 countries on the continent to the event, which is scheduled for October 23-27 in the capital Lome. But the Palestinians, Morocco and South Africa are actively seeking to derail the gathering, African and Israeli sources told The Times of Israel.“This is not taking place without contrary pressure,” Netanyahu said during Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting, referring to the Africa-Israel Summit. “Various pressures have been placed on the Togolese president to cancel the conference. These pressures are the best testimony to the success of our policy, of Israel’s presence in Africa.”Netanyahu is expected to be the only non-African leader to take a central role in the conference. The schedule for the gathering has not been finalized, but the prime minister is likely to address the entire gathering and hold one-on-one meetings with leaders.Netanyahu is due on Monday evening to host Togo’s President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe in his Jerusalem office to talk about the summit.Between 20 and 25 African heads of state and government, plus dozens of ministers with various portfolios, are expected at the four-day conference, according to Bruno Finel, the event’s organizer.“Preparations are going very well. You will have approximately 150 Israeli companies attending the summit, about a dozen from West Africa and also many from Central and East Africa,” he said on Sunday. There is a “strong possibility” that even senior officials from countries with which Israel has no diplomatic ties will attend, Finel added. “On one side, it’s about politics and diplomacy, and on the other side it’s business. We want to promote to a real partnership between Africa and Israel.”Before the politicians and businessmen gather, some 100 African students will meet with 30 Israeli students for the first-ever African-Israeli youth summit, he said.Under the motto “Israel is coming back to Africa and Africa is coming back to Israel,” Netanyahu has declared diplomatic outreach to Africa as one of his key foreign policy objectives. Offering African states development aid, economic cooperation, and anti-terrorism know-how, Netanyahu aims to use support from the continent to break the traditional anti-Israel majority in international organizations such as the UN.Last week, Cape Verde announced it will no longer vote against Israel at the UN. On Tuesday, Senegal and Guinea — two Muslim-majority countries in West Africa — will send their first-ever non-resident ambassadors to Israel.Naturally, Ramallah is dismayed about the prospects of Israel strengthening ties with countries that have traditionally been staunch supporters of the Palestinian cause.Morocco is leading the opposition to the planned African-Israeli conference. Rabat, like Jerusalem, has identified Africa’s economic potential and is now worried about competition from Israel, according to two sources.“Morocco wants to become a superpower, and they understand that Africa is a major market for them,” an African source said, asking to remain unnamed due to the sensitive nature of the issue. “Morocco’s opposition to the summit has nothing to do with support for the Palestinians — zero. They just sees Israel as competitors, just like China, India or Japan.”In June, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI opted not to participate in a meeting between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that was attended by Netanyahu, even though Rabat seeks to become a member of the organization. The monarch “disagree[d] with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu being invited,” the Moroccan Foreign Ministry said at the time, adding that he “wishes his first visit to a ECOWAS summit not take place in a context of tension and controversy.”South Africa, too, appears eager to derail the summit. The country’s ruling party, the African National Congress, last month issued a “discussion document” calling for efforts to sabotage Israel’s rapprochement with African states in general and the planned meeting in Lome in particular.“[W]e have remained consistent with our solidarity with the people of Palestine in their cause to realise the Palestinian Statehood. We cannot turn a blind on Israeli efforts to galvanise support from Africa and elsewhere with a view to undermine the Palestinian cause,” the document states.Noting that Netanyahu has visited several African countries in recent months “to garner support for its foreign policy towards Palestine,” the party should “engage progressive forces on the continent on the need to develop a common position and posture in preparation for the upcoming Israeli-Africa Summit scheduled for October 2017 in Togo.”But Israel this week showed so signs of panic.“The efforts by the Palestinians, the Moroccans, and the South Africans to sabotage the planned summit in Togo are doomed to fail,” a senior diplomatic official in Jerusalem said on Monday. “We expect the prime minister to meet many African leaders there and to significantly advance his goal of fostering a stronger Africa-Israel alliance.”

Iran snickers at US push to inspect military sites-Tehran calls idea of more robust inspections regime a ‘ridiculous dream that will never come true’-By Agencies August 7, 2017, 5:37 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran mocked the US push for inspections of the country’s military sites, calling it a “ridiculous dream that will never come true.”The comments came after US officials said last month that the Trump administration was pushing for inspections of suspicious Iranian military sites in a bid to test the strength of the nuclear deal that Tehran struck in 2015 with world powers.Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, told reporters on Monday in Tehran that this request was “possibly something that a satirist wrote up.”The inspections are one element of what is designed to be a more aggressive approach to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. While the Trump administration seeks to police the existing deal more strictly, it is also working to fix what US President Donald Trump’s aides have called “serious flaws” in the landmark deal that — if not resolved quickly — will likely lead Trump to pull out. That effort also includes discussions with European countries to negotiate a followup agreement to prevent Iran from resuming nuclear development after the deal’s restrictions expire in about a decade, the officials said last month. The officials weren’t authorized to discuss the efforts publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The inspections requests, which Iran would likely resist, could play heavily into Trump’s much-anticipated decision about whether to stick with a deal he’s long derided. If Iran refuses inspections, Trump would finally have a solid basis to say Iran is breaching the deal, setting up Tehran to take most of the blame if the agreement collapses. If Iran agrees to inspections, those in Trump’s administration who want to preserve the deal would be emboldened to argue it’s advancing US national security effectively.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced last month that Iran was in compliance of the nuclear deal, despite Trump’s desire to declare Iran in breach of the agreement. After being talked out of declaring Iran in violation of the deal by his national security aides, Trump agreed to let the issue go, but only for a few more months — and only after last-minute changes to distance Trump further from the deal.Rather than say, as planned, that Iran was living up to its end of the deal, Trump’s aides found a way to let the deal continue for now without technically confirming that Iran is complying. The administration followed up the announcement with new, non-nuclear sanctions on Iranians on Tuesday to show Trump is indeed serious about confronting Tehran. The compromise, relayed to Congress in the final few hours before the deadline, lets Iran continue enjoying relief — for now — from nuclear sanctions lifted as part of the 2015 deal. It also gives Trump some cover to declare publicly that Iran is violating “the spirit” of the deal, preserving a potent argument should he ultimately decide to exit the pact. The deadline comes up again in October. Given Trump’s strong reluctance to certify Iran’s compliance, it’s highly unlikely he will agree to do it again, officials and others familiar with Trump’s Iran policy said last month. The individuals weren’t authorized to comment publicly and requested anonymity.Coupled with the new sanctions, the move raised optimism among critics of the deal that Trump’s broader Iran review, expected to conclude soon, will mark a major shift in the US approach to the Islamic Republic. While being inaugurated for a second term on Saturday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned the US against tearing up the nuclear deal.“Iran will not be the first to violate the nuclear deal… but nor will it stay silent when the United States fails to respect its commitments,” he told the packed parliament hall in Tehran.“Iran has proved that it will respond to respect with respect, and to sanctions and threats with an appropriate response and with resistance,” he added.

St. Louis Jewish cemetery rededicated 6 months after vandalism-Dozens of members of Jewish community attend ceremony at Chesed Shel Emeth, where over 150 gravestones were toppled-By JTA August 7, 2017, 4:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A St. Louis-area Jewish cemetery was rededicated nearly six months after more than 150 headstones were toppled and damaged by vandals.Dozens of members of the St. Louis Jewish community and its supporters gathered Sunday at the Chesed Shel Emeth cemetery in University City, Missouri, on Sunday to honor those who are buried there and acknowledge the help and support of the entire local community, local media reported.“While God could not guard this sacred place from harm, God did send so many to repair, reclaim, and re-dedicate,” Rabbi Roxane Shapiro of the St. Louis Rabbinical Association said during the ceremony. “Our help had no barriers and no hate, simply care, compassion, and hope.”Among those in attendance at the rededication was Tarek El-Messidi, founder of the Muslim organization Celebrate Mercy. The group, with the support of other Muslim activists including Linda Sarsour, set up a crowdfunding campaign which raised $162,000 from nearly 5,000 donors, exceeding in the first few hours its $20,000 goal to help repair the Chesed Shel Emeth cemetery.Ceremony honors those who rebuilt Jewish cemetery in University City after vandalism https://t.co/cO7DG35cnf pic.twitter.com/WvENqUXkew— STLtoday (@stltoday) August 6, 2017-Hundreds of community volunteers came to the cemetery to help with the cleanup and repairs in the wake of the attack, including US Vice President Mike Pence and Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who is Jewish and had invited the vice president. No suspects have been identified in the vandalism attack. The Anti-Defamation has offered a $10,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest in the case.

Rights group condemns Israeli move to shutter Al Jazeera-Amnesty International calls decision by Israel to close Jerusalem office of Qatari broadcaster ‘a brazen attack on media freedom’-By Agencies August 7, 2017, 7:18 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

LONDON — Israel’s decision to close the offices of broadcaster Al Jazeera in the Jewish state is “a brazen attack on media freedom,” Amnesty International said Monday.“The move sends a chilling message that the Israeli authorities will not tolerate critical coverage,” Magdalena Mughrabi, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at the London-based group, said in a statement.“This is a brazen attack on media freedom in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” she added. She urged Israel to “halt any attempt to silence critical media,” saying that “all journalists should be free to carry out their work without facing harassment or intimidation.”Israel said Sunday it would demand the revocation of the credentials of journalists working for the channel and also cut its cable and satellite connections.Israel is to join regional Arab states that have already shut the station after accusing the broadcaster of inciting violence, Communications Minister Ayoub Kara (Likud) said.Jordan and Saudi Arabia have recently closed Al Jazeera’s local offices, while the channel and its affiliate sites have been blocked in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain.“Lately, almost all countries in our region determined that Al Jazeera supports terrorism, supports religious radicalization,” Kara said. “And when we see that all these countries have determined as fact that Al Jazeera is a tool of the Islamic State [group], Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, and we are the only one who have not determined that, then something ludicrous is happening here,” he said, adding that the channel “caused us to lose the lives of the best of our sons.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last month that he wanted Al Jazeera expelled amid tensions over Israel’s decision to install metal detectors at entrances to the Temple Mount following the July 14 terror at the site, in which three Arab Israelis shot dead two police officers using weapons smuggled into the Al-Aqsa Mosque.Israeli officials have long accused Al Jazeera of incitement to terror. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has likened its coverage to “Nazi Germany-style” propaganda.Al Jazeera, a pan-Arab satellite network funded by the Qatari government, has been targeted by Arab nations now isolating Qatar as part of a months-long political dispute over Doha’s politics and alleged support for extremists.

Israeli couples embrace a rabbinical prenup-Almost 2,000 pairs have signed Agreement of Love designed to prevent Jewish legal obstacles in event of divorce-By JTA August 7, 2017, 4:54 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

In honor of the “Jewish day of love,” Tu B’Av, the Tzohar Rabbinical Organization reports that there is increasing public interest in its halachic prenuptial agreement.Tu B’Av is observed this year on Monday, which is the 15th day of the Jewish month of Av.The Heskem Me’ahava, or Agreement of Love, was introduced in 2015 in order to prevent legal and halachic, or Jewish legal, obstacles in the event of the dissolution of a marriage.Nearly 2,000 couples have signed the Agreement of Love contract before their weddings since its launch, with many more inquiring about it in recent months.Tzohar hopes to make the agreement standard practice ahead of all Jewish weddings in the hopes of avoiding such issues as agunot, or chained wives. The agreement was drafted by both rabbinical and legal scholars to address cases of “get refusal” where one spouse refuses to allow the other to leave the marriage, often demanding large sums of money or child custody in exchange for agreeing to a divorce.“Every couple who goes under the chuppah deserves to play a part in addressing the growing problem of people trapped by their spouses because of the absence of these types of agreements,” said Rabbi Uri Ganzel, director of the Heskem Me’ahava program, in a statement. “So by signing on, a couple is able to help make this process more mainstream and combat that trend with the hope that it will one day be completely eradicated from our society.”Founded in 1996, Tzohar’s core program provides halachic weddings for Jewish couples in Israel as a fully legal alternative to marriage under the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. More than 50,000 weddings have been performed under Tzohar’s auspices, with 20 scheduled for Tu B’Av this year.“When the couple is standing under the chuppah and dreaming of their lives ahead together, all they can think of is love. But the reality of life is there will be other marriages that don’t thrive in the way yours hopefully will. On their behalf, you deserve to be a part of making this agreement standard practice,” said Rabbi David Stav, Tzohar founder.

Jordanian king tells Abbas Trump committed to peace process-In rare visit by monarch to Ramallah, two sides agree to form task force to prepare for any future Temple Mount tension-By Dov Lieber August 7, 2017, 5:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Jordan’s King Abdullah II told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that US President Donald Trump is “committed” to the peace process and called for “intensifying” efforts for new talks, during a rare trip to Ramallah Monday seemingly meant to send a message to Israel.During his two-hour meeting with Abbas, the Jordanian king highlighted “the commitment of Trump to work toward achieving peace between Palestinians and Israelis,” according to a summary of the meeting in the Jordanian government’s official news outlet Petra.Abdullah “stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to create real political prospects for progress toward resolving the conflict,” the report said.Abdullah’s visit to Ramallah, the first since 2012, came after a spike in Jordanian-Israeli tensions over the Temple Mount, which is holy to both Jews and Muslims, and a deadly shooting incident involving an Israeli embassy guard in Amman.Abdullah did not meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the trip, which was seen as the latest in a series of diplomatic measures meant to underline Amman’s unhappiness with Israel. The Palestinian leadership in Ramallah initially showed optimism toward the Trump administration’s initiative to jumpstart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which have been frozen since 2014.Recent weeks however, have seen Palestinian officials openly criticizing the White House for its handling of the Temple Mount tensions, and its inability to curb Israeli settlement construction and back the long-accepted two-state solution to the conflict.Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, who last week criticized the US for allowing Israeli settlement construction to continue unabated by offering only silence on the issue, also said the Palestinians are still “committed” to a US initiative. On Sunday, during a meeting with the speaker of the Jordanian parliament and heads of parliamentary committees, Abdullah had stressed the importance of American participation in the peace process.“The future of the Palestinian issue is at stake and reaching a solution is becoming more difficult. There will be no breakthrough in the peace process if there is no American commitment to support a solution to the Palestinian issue,” he said.Ties between Jordan and Israel have been strained by an incident in July that saw an Israeli guard at the embassy compound in Amman shoot dead two Jordanian men, one of whom had attacked him with a screwdriver. When Netanyahu warmly greeted the guard upon his return to Israel, Abdullah said there would be diplomatic consequences. He said that Jordan was “infuriated” by the matter, calling it “unacceptable and provocative behavior.”Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has yet to allow Israeli Ambassador Einat Schlein to return to her posting along with the rest of the embassy’s staff, all of whom left the country, according to a report in the Jordanian al-Ghad daily. The PA’s official news outlet Wafa reported that Jordan did not coordinate the king’s visit to Ramallah with Jerusalem, in a show of “anger” toward Israel.-Jordan, PA form joint Al-Aqsa crisis group-Jordan was a key player in efforts to calm tensions after Israel installed metal detectors and other security measures at the Temple Mount following a July 14 terror attack there in which three Arab Israelis shot dead two police officers using guns they had smuggled into the holy site. The new Israeli measures, which Israel eventually reversed, prompted the Waqf Islamic Trust, a Jordanian government body that administers the site, to announce a boycott that devolved into daily clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces.During their meeting, Abbas praised Abdullah’s role during a Temple Mount crisis, according to the Petra report. The two sides agreed to form a joint task force that would learn the lessons of the last crisis and prepare for possible conflict at the Temple Mount in the future.Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told journalists after the two-hour meeting between Abdullah and Abbas that “we evaluated the experience and are preparing for future actions that we expect from Israel and from the person of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu,” he said, according to the PA’s official news site Wafa.“It was agreed to form a joint crisis team, which will continue to assess the past phase and its lessons, and to assess any challenges we may face at the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he added.
