No, the Aug. 21 solar eclipse doesn’t mean the world is coming to an end.This is according to NASA scientists who can predict the movement of our solar system’s bodies so precisely that they know to the minute when our moon will pass in front of the sun later this month.But that hasn’t stopped a cadre of conspiracy theorists from pushing the claim that the solar eclipse is a portent for the end of times.Paul Begley, a pastor at the Community Gospel Baptist Church in Knox, Ind., maintains a YouTube channel with more than 190,000 subscribers. In one video, citing research, he says there is “overwhelming evidence that Planet X will destroy the Earth in 2017.“Now, I don’t know about that,” he adds, before spending a few minutes discussing faux research about Planet X.Begley claims in another video that, in the darkness during the eclipse, Planet X will “potentially” be revealed.David Meade, who writes that he studied astronomy at an unnamed university, maintains a website that suggests Planet X, also known as Nibiru, is a harbinger of an apocalypse. Meade claims Planet X also caused the torrential rainfall in the biblical story of Noah.Meade said in an emailed statement that he’ll probably head to the Arkansas Ozarks to avoid large cities, where apparently the worst post-apocalypse conditions will be.Theories about Planet X, Nibiru or other “wayward planets” are false, according to NASA.Nibiru was also invoked ahead of the Mayan calendar doomsday of 2012, NASA’s website says. A summer heat wave and extensive wildfires in the B.C. Interior have been abnormally hard on animals in the province, especially nestlings.Burnaby's Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. services the entire province, and says it's taking in 20 injured animals a day, with 95 percent suffering from dehydration."The heat is overwhelming them, particularly the past couple weeks have been really bad. We've had a lot of young nestlings, jumping out of nests to avoid the heat," said Sam Smith, communications coordinator at Wildlife Rescue.Smith says when young birds leave the nest too early, they end up falling on the ground and start to waste away, because they don't yet have the strength to fly or move.Smith says it's mostly birds that he sees affected by the heat, including songbirds, waterfowl, marine animals, crows and ravens."Sometimes, they're just so out of sorts, they can't even drink, let alone open up their mouths to be given fluids," he said. In those cases, he says, they have to hydrate the animals with an injection.People can help, though, says Smith. "Leave a little lid out with some water in the shade, or, better yet, fill a small kiddie pool with water and place some branches/stones inside to allow smaller birds a place to perch while they drink."If anyone sees wildlife in distress, they can usher it into some shade, get it water and call Wildlife Rescue at 604-526-7275.Nestlings rescued from wildfires-The wildfires have claimed their own victims, with wildlife rescue an afterthought.Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta says they have been taking in young birds injured or left behind in the wake of the wildfires."Most of the adult birds at the time or adult animals would know to flee. It's just the young ones that are left behind … So a lot were probably burnt up pretty good, and the ones that could survive, survived, and the ones that were found, were found," said Rob Hope, raptor care manager with OWL.Hope says they have nine baby birds live tested, flight tested and ready to get back to their communities, once the fires subside.

Smoke from large fires in the Cariboo region has blown into Prince George and surrounding areas after a shift in wind direction over the weekend.The wind carried ashes from the fires south of Prince George, leaving a light dusting on cars and sidewalks that was washed away by overnight rains."It has been smoky in Prince George, incredibly smoky, actually," said Eryn Collins, communication officer with Northern Health, who warned residents to take precautions.At noon on Sunday, the health risk was rated at 15 on the Air Quality Health index (AQHI). Numbers higher than 10 are unusual and indicate a very high risk.The air quality index reached as high as 45 overnight on Saturday.Poor air quality-In Quesnel, the health risk is also rated high and is forecast to remain high overnight and into Monday.While Collins said the rain has helped, smoke concentrations are varied across the region and air quality is very bad in some areas.The concentration of fine particulate matter in the air averaged 244 micrograms per cubic metre compared to the province's target measure of 25 micrograms per cubic metre, over a 24-hour period.That particulate is of concern for anyone with asthma or other chronic illnesses. They are being told to carry emergency medication at all times and avoid the outdoors.Experts suggest people go to shopping malls or public buildings where air is filtered, but noted that air quality indoors may still be a hazard.Anyone experiencing difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort or a sudden onset of coughing should visit a health care provider.Northern Health has taken measures to ensure air quality is maintained inside hospitals in Quesnel and Prince George.Forecast to improve-The smoke is blowing in from the south on a southwesterly wind and causing eerily dark orange and red skies.Officials at B.C. Wildfire Service and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George said there are no fires of note nearby.The Air Quality Health Index is forecast to return to moderate on Sunday night and low on Monday.The largest active wildfire in the region is east of Lucas Lake, about 160 kilometres from Prince George. It is not currently threatening any communities or structures, according to the province.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Well before Oregon legalized marijuana, its verdant, wet forests made it an ideal place for growing the drug, which often ended up being funneled out of the state for big money. Now, officials suspect pot grown legally in Oregon and other states is also being smuggled out, and the trafficking is putting America's multibillion-dollar marijuana industry at risk.In response, pot-legal states are trying to clamp down on "diversion" even as U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions presses for enforcement of federal laws against marijuana.Tracking legal weed from the fields and greenhouses where it's grown to the shops where it's sold under names like Blueberry Kush and Chornobyl is their so far main protective measure.In Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown recently signed into law a requirement that state regulators track from seed to store all marijuana grown for sale in Oregon's legal market. So far, only recreational marijuana has been comprehensively tracked. Tina Kotek, speaker of the Oregon House, said lawmakers wanted to ensure "we're protecting the new industry that we're supporting here.""There was a real recognition that things could be changing in D.C.," she said.The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board says it's replacing its current tracking Nov. 1 with a "highly secure, reliable, scalable and flexible system."California voters approved using a tracking system run by Lakeland, Florida-based Franwell for its recreational pot market. Sales become legal Jan. 1.Franwell also tracks marijuana, using bar-code and radio frequency identification labels on packaging and plants, in Colorado, Oregon, Maryland, Alaska and Michigan."The tracking system is the most important tool a state has," said Michael Crabtree, who runs Denver-based Nationwide Compliance Specialists Inc., which helps tax collectors track elusive, cash-heavy industries like the marijuana business.But the systems aren't fool-proof. They rely on the users' honesty, he said."We have seen numerous examples of people 'forgetting' to tag plants," Crabtree said. Colorado's tracking also doesn't apply to home-grown plants and many noncommercial marijuana caregivers.In California, implementing a "fully operational, legal market" could take years, said state Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents the "Emerald Triangle" region that's estimated to produce 60 per cent of America's marijuana. But he's confident tracking will help."In the first 24 months, we're going to have a good idea who is in the regulated market and who is in black market," McGuire said.Oregon was the first state to decriminalize personal possession, in 1973. It legalized medical marijuana in 1998, and recreational use in 2014.Before that, Anthony Taylor hid his large cannabis crop from aerial surveillance under a forest canopy east of Portland, and tended it when there was barely enough light to see."In those days, marijuana was REALLY illegal," said Taylor, now a licensed marijuana processor and lobbyist. "If you got caught growing the amounts we were growing, you were going to go to prison for a number of years."Taylor believes it's easier to grow illegally now because authorities lack the resources to sniff out every operation. And growers who sell outside the state can earn thousands of dollars per pound, he said.Still, it's hard to say if pot smuggling has gotten worse in Oregon, or how much of the marijuana leaving the state filters out from the legal side.Chris Gibson, executive director of the federally funded Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, said the distinction matters less than the fact that marijuana continues to leave Oregon on planes, trains and automobiles, and through the mail."None is supposed to leave, so it's an issue," Gibson told The Associated Press. "That should be a primary concern to state leadership."On a recent morning, Billy Williams, the U.S. attorney in Oregon, sat at his desk in his office overlooking downtown Portland, a draft Oregon State Police report in front of him. Oregon produces between 132 tons (120 metric tons) and 900 tons (816 metric tons) more marijuana than what Oregonians can conceivably consume, the report said, using statistics from the legal industry and estimates of illicit grows. It identified Oregon as an "epicenter of cannabis production" and quoted an academic as saying three to five times the amount of pot that's consumed in Oregon leaves the state.Sessions himself cited the report in a July 24 letter to Oregon's governor. Earl Blumenauer and California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher that prevents the Justice Department from interfering with states' medical marijuana. Congress is weighing renewing the amendment for the next fiscal year.In a phone interview from Washington, Blumenauer said the attorney general is "out of step" with most members of Congress, who have become more supportive "of ending the failed prohibition on marijuana.""Marijuana has left Oregon for decades," Blumenauer said. Seated, he answered questions from the judge with simple responses of "Yes, sir" when asked if he understood what was being explained to him. Fields also replied "No, sir" when asked if he had ties to the community of Charlottesville.Judge Robert Downer set an Aug. 25 hearing for the 20-year-old Fields, who has been charged with second-degree murder and other counts.Downer said the public defenders' office informed him it could not represent Fields because a relative of someone in the office was injured in Saturday's protest. Héma-Québec is reaching out to new mothers in hopes of getting more donors for its breast milk bank.The milk bank, which was launched in April 2014 and is the only one in Quebec, is used to give milk to babies born prematurely.Most mothers who give birth prematurely have difficulty producing their own milk or their ability to do so is compromised because of illness or medication, according to Héma-Québec's website.The agency said that it currently has a little under 200 donors, but that it needs about another 100 new mothers to help increase its supply of breast milk.Spokesperson Laurent Paul Ménard told La Presse Canadienne that the milk bank "can't currently meet the demands" of neonatal intensive care units at hospitals which provide care for premature babies.Any mother living in the Great Montreal and Greater Quebec City areas can register for the program as long as they are in good health, are currently nursing and able to produce additional milk and if their child is less than a year old.Mothers who would like to donate their breast milk can visit the public mother's milk bank section of the Héma-Québec website.

Interior have been abnormally hard on animals in the province, especially nestlings.Burnaby's Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. services the entire province, and says it's taking in 20 injured animals a day, with 95 percent suffering from dehydration."The heat is overwhelming them, particularly the past couple weeks have been really bad. We've had a lot of young nestlings, jumping out of nests to avoid the heat," said Sam Smith, communications coordinator at Wildlife Rescue.Smith says when young birds leave the nest too early, they end up falling on the ground and start to waste away, because they don't yet have the strength to fly or move.Smith says it's mostly birds that he sees affected by the heat, including songbirds, waterfowl, marine animals, crows and ravens."Sometimes, they're just so out of sorts, they can't even drink, let alone open up their mouths to be given fluids," he said. In those cases, he says, they have to hydrate the animals with an injection.People can help, though, says Smith. "Leave a little lid out with some water in the shade, or, better yet, fill a small kiddie pool with water and place some branches/stones inside to allow smaller birds a place to perch while they drink."If anyone sees wildlife in distress, they can usher it into some shade, get it water and call Wildlife Rescue at 604-526-7275.Nestlings rescued from wildfires-The wildfires have claimed their own victims, with wildlife rescue an afterthought.Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta says they have been taking in young birds injured or left behind in the wake of the wildfires."Most of the adult birds at the time or adult animals would know to flee. It's just the young ones that are left behind … So a lot were probably burnt up pretty good, and the ones that could survive, survived, and the ones that were found, were found," said Rob Hope, raptor care manager with OWL.Hope says they have nine baby birds live tested, flight tested and ready to get back to their communities, once the fires subside.

Smoke from large fires in the Cariboo region has blown into Prince George and surrounding areas after a shift in wind direction over the weekend.The wind carried ashes from the fires south of Prince George, leaving a light dusting on cars and sidewalks that was washed away by overnight rains."It has been smoky in Prince George, incredibly smoky, actually," said Eryn Collins, communication officer with Northern Health, who warned residents to take precautions.At noon on Sunday, the health risk was rated at 15 on the Air Quality Health index (AQHI). Numbers higher than 10 are unusual and indicate a very high risk.The air quality index reached as high as 45 overnight on Saturday.Poor air quality-In Quesnel, the health risk is also rated high and is forecast to remain high overnight and into Monday.While Collins said the rain has helped, smoke concentrations are varied across the region and air quality is very bad in some areas.The concentration of fine particulate matter in the air averaged 244 micrograms per cubic metre compared to the province's target measure of 25 micrograms per cubic metre, over a 24-hour period.That particulate is of concern for anyone with asthma or other chronic illnesses. They are being told to carry emergency medication at all times and avoid the outdoors.Experts suggest people go to shopping malls or public buildings where air is filtered, but noted that air quality indoors may still be a hazard.Anyone experiencing difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort or a sudden onset of coughing should visit a health care provider.Northern Health has taken measures to ensure air quality is maintained inside hospitals in Quesnel and Prince George.Forecast to improve-The smoke is blowing in from the south on a southwesterly wind and causing eerily dark orange and red skies.Officials at B.C. Wildfire Service and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George said there are no fires of note nearby.The Air Quality Health Index is forecast to return to moderate on Sunday night and low on Monday.The largest active wildfire in the region is east of Lucas Lake, about 160 kilometres from Prince George. It is not currently threatening any communities or structures, according to the province.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Well before Oregon legalized marijuana, its verdant, wet forests made it an ideal place for growing the drug, which often ended up being funneled out of the state for big money. Now, officials suspect pot grown legally in Oregon and other states is also being smuggled out, and the trafficking is putting America's multibillion-dollar marijuana industry at risk.In response, pot-legal states are trying to clamp down on "diversion" even as U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions presses for enforcement of federal laws against marijuana.Tracking legal weed from the fields and greenhouses where it's grown to the shops where it's sold under names like Blueberry Kush and Chornobyl is their so far main protective measure.In Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown recently signed into law a requirement that state regulators track from seed to store all marijuana grown for sale in Oregon's legal market. So far, only recreational marijuana has been comprehensively tracked. Tina Kotek, speaker of the Oregon House, said lawmakers wanted to ensure "we're protecting the new industry that we're supporting here.""There was a real recognition that things could be changing in D.C.," she said.The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board says it's replacing its current tracking Nov. 1 with a "highly secure, reliable, scalable and flexible system."California voters approved using a tracking system run by Lakeland, Florida-based Franwell for its recreational pot market. Sales become legal Jan. 1.Franwell also tracks marijuana, using bar-code and radio frequency identification labels on packaging and plants, in Colorado, Oregon, Maryland, Alaska and Michigan."The tracking system is the most important tool a state has," said Michael Crabtree, who runs Denver-based Nationwide Compliance Specialists Inc., which helps tax collectors track elusive, cash-heavy industries like the marijuana business.But the systems aren't fool-proof. They rely on the users' honesty, he said."We have seen numerous examples of people 'forgetting' to tag plants," Crabtree said. Colorado's tracking also doesn't apply to home-grown plants and many noncommercial marijuana caregivers.In California, implementing a "fully operational, legal market" could take years, said state Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents the "Emerald Triangle" region that's estimated to produce 60 per cent of America's marijuana. But he's confident tracking will help."In the first 24 months, we're going to have a good idea who is in the regulated market and who is in black market," McGuire said.Oregon was the first state to decriminalize personal possession, in 1973. It legalized medical marijuana in 1998, and recreational use in 2014.Before that, Anthony Taylor hid his large cannabis crop from aerial surveillance under a forest canopy east of Portland, and tended it when there was barely enough light to see."In those days, marijuana was REALLY illegal," said Taylor, now a licensed marijuana processor and lobbyist. "If you got caught growing the amounts we were growing, you were going to go to prison for a number of years."Taylor believes it's easier to grow illegally now because authorities lack the resources to sniff out every operation. And growers who sell outside the state can earn thousands of dollars per pound, he said.Still, it's hard to say if pot smuggling has gotten worse in Oregon, or how much of the marijuana leaving the state filters out from the legal side.Chris Gibson, executive director of the federally funded Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, said the distinction matters less than the fact that marijuana continues to leave Oregon on planes, trains and automobiles, and through the mail."None is supposed to leave, so it's an issue," Gibson told The Associated Press. "That should be a primary concern to state leadership."On a recent morning, Billy Williams, the U.S. attorney in Oregon, sat at his desk in his office overlooking downtown Portland, a draft Oregon State Police report in front of him. Oregon produces between 132 tons (120 metric tons) and 900 tons (816 metric tons) more marijuana than what Oregonians can conceivably consume, the report said, using statistics from the legal industry and estimates of illicit grows. It identified Oregon as an "epicenter of cannabis production" and quoted an academic as saying three to five times the amount of pot that's consumed in Oregon leaves the state.Sessions himself cited the report in a July 24 letter to Oregon's governor. In it, Sessions asked Brown to explain how Oregon would address the report's "serious findings."Pete Gendron, a licensed marijuana grower who advised state regulators on compliance and enforcement, said the reports' numbers are guesswork, and furthermore are outdated because they don't take into account the marijuana now being sold in Oregon's legal recreational market.A U.S. Justice Department task force recently said the Cole Memorandum , which restricts federal marijuana law enforcement in states where pot is legal, should be reevaluated to see if it should be changed.The governors of Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Alaska — where both medical and recreational marijuana are legal — wrote to Sessions and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in April, warning altering the memorandum "would divert existing marijuana product into the black market and increase dangerous activity in both our states and our neighbouring states."But less than a month later, Sessions wrote to congressional leaders criticizing the federal government's hands-off approach to medical marijuana, and citing a Colorado case in which a medical marijuana licensee shipped pot out of state.In his letter, Sessions opposed an amendment by Oregon Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer and California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher that prevents the Justice Department from interfering with states' medical marijuana. Congress is weighing renewing the amendment for the next fiscal year.In a phone interview from Washington, Blumenauer said the attorney general is "out of step" with most members of Congress, who have become more supportive "of ending the failed prohibition on marijuana.""Marijuana has left Oregon for decades," Blumenauer said. Fascists aren't welcomed here," members of the group chanted at one point.On Saturday, a car plowed through a group of people as they were protesting a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, was arrested shortly after and charged with second-degree murder and other counts.At Monday's rally in Toronto, Donna Gabaccia, an American professor at the University of Toronto who helped organize the event, said she was "appalled" by the weekend gathering of white supremacists in Charlottesville."I was not surprised that violence and death was the outcome," she said. "I felt that as a U.S. citizen and white person, I need to speak out against racism (and) bigotry, and I'm here in Toronto. The consulate is the most public face of the U.S."Jesse-Blue Forrest, who lives in Toronto but is from a community near Charlottesville, said he came out to the rally to let people know that violence is not the norm in the American city. At the same time, this past weekend's events didn't just happen spontaneously, he said."It's been brewing for a long time," Forrest said. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A man accused of ramming his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia was denied bond Monday after the public defender's office said it couldn't represent him and the judge was forced to find a local attorney to fill in.James Alex Fields Jr. was not present in the courtroom but appeared via video monitor dressed in a black-and-white striped uniform. Seated, he answered questions from the judge with simple responses of "Yes, sir" when asked if he understood what was being explained to him. Fields also replied "No, sir" when asked if he had ties to the community of Charlottesville.Judge Robert Downer set an Aug. 25 hearing for the 20-year-old Fields, who has been charged with second-degree murder and other counts.Downer said the public defenders' office informed him it could not represent Fields because a relative of someone in the office was injured in Saturday's protest. He appointed local attorney Charles Weber to represent him. Weber couldn't immediately be reached by The Associated Press.Fields is charged in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, of Charlottesville, who died after a car that police say Fields was driving slammed into a crowd of people protesting the nationalist rally Saturday. But Fields was ultimately turned down, which was a big blow, Weimer said. SANAA, Yemen — Yemen's Central Bank says the Saudi-led coalition is "strangling" the economy by preventing planes from flying in newly-minted cash, reflecting a struggle between the government and the United Arab Emirates, key members of the military alliance.Both are at war with the Shiite Houthi rebels, who control much of northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. Héma-Québec is reaching out to new mothers in hopes of getting more donors for its breast milk bank.The milk bank, which was launched in April 2014 and is the only one in Quebec, is used to give milk to babies born prematurely.Most mothers who give birth prematurely have difficulty producing their own milk or their ability to do so is compromised because of illness or medication, according to Héma-Québec's website.The agency said that it currently has a little under 200 donors, but that it needs about another 100 new mothers to help increase its supply of breast milk.Spokesperson Laurent Paul Ménard told La Presse Canadienne that the milk bank "can't currently meet the demands" of neonatal intensive care units at hospitals which provide care for premature babies.Any mother living in the Great Montreal and Greater Quebec City areas can register for the program as long as they are in good health, are currently nursing and able to produce additional milk and if their child is less than a year old.Mothers who would like to donate their breast milk can visit the public mother's milk bank section of the Héma-Québec website.
