Conspiracy theorists use the Bible to claim the eclipse is a sign of the apocalypse-By Max Londberg-jlondberg@kcstar.com-August 10, 2017 12:09 PM-KANSAS CITY STAR.

No, the Aug. 21 solar eclipse doesn’t mean the world is coming to an end. This is according to NASA scientists who can predict the movement of our solar system’s bodies so precisely that they know to the minute when our moon will pass in front of the sun later this month. But that hasn’t stopped a cadre of conspiracy theorists from pushing the claim that the solar eclipse is a portent for the end of times.Paul Begley, a pastor at the Community Gospel Baptist Church in Knox, Ind., maintains a YouTube channel with more than 190,000 subscribers. In one video, citing research, he says there is “overwhelming evidence that Planet X will destroy the Earth in 2017.“Now, I don’t know about that,” he adds, before spending a few minutes discussing faux research about Planet X.Begley claims in another video that, in the darkness during the eclipse, Planet X will “potentially” be revealed.David Meade, who writes that he studied astronomy at an unnamed university, maintains a website that suggests Planet X, also known as Nibiru, is a harbinger of an apocalypse. Meade claims Planet X also caused the torrential rainfall in the biblical story of Noah.Meade said in an emailed statement that he’ll probably head to the Arkansas Ozarks to avoid large cities, where apparently the worst post-apocalypse conditions will be.Theories about Planet X, Nibiru or other “wayward planets” are false, according to NASA.Nibiru was also invoked ahead of the Mayan calendar doomsday of 2012, NASA’s website says. That apocalypse never materialized.“Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax,” NASA states on its site, adding that if they were real, such planets would be visible to the naked eye.Meade and other conspiracy theorists invoke verses from the Book of Isaiah when claiming this month’s eclipse is a portent.“See, the day of the LORD is coming — a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger — to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it,” the Book of Isaiah says. “The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light.”Begley’s YouTube channel links to a PayPal account to submit donations, as does his website. Begley’s site also advertises a live show called “The Coming Apocalypse,” which runs on World Harvest Television and its local stations around the country. A spokeswoman for the company said she could not comment when asked whether the network endorses hoaxes broadcast on its channels.Kenny Pfost, who works for the City of Knox, Ind., where Begley’s church is located, said he would be concerned if Begley were using people’s fear of an apocalypse to entreat donations to his church.“I’m not a believer that money is going to influence ... whether we’ll be saved or not,” Pfost said.Another Knox city official, who asked not to be named, said he’s been around long enough to see many end-of-world claims come and go.“Unfortunately, I think some people want the world to end because then they’re proven right,” he said. “Then their faith is proven right.”Max Londberg: 816-234-4378, @MaxLondberg-Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/news/nation-world/article166475397.html#storylink=cpy

Top US military officer warns NKorea that US military ready-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — The top U.S. military officer said Monday that the United States wants to peacefully resolve a deepening standoff with North Korea but is also ready to use the "full range" of its military capabilities in case of provocation. The comments by Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford in a series of meetings with senior South Korean military and political officials and the local media appeared to be an attempt to ease anxiety over tit-for-tat threats between President Donald Trump and North Korea while also showing a willingness to back up Trump's warnings if need be.Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is visiting South Korea, Japan and China after a week in which Trump declared the U.S. military "locked and loaded" and said he was ready to unleash "fire and fury" if North Korea continued to threaten the United States.North Korea, meanwhile, has threatened to lob four intermediate-range missiles into the waters near Guam, a tiny U.S. territory about 3,200 kilometres (2,000 miles) from Pyongyang, North Korea's capital. This would be a deeply provocative act from the U.S. perspective, and there has been widespread debate about whether Washington would try to shoot the missiles down if they're fired. The U.S.-North Korea impasse, which has simmered since the end of the Korean War in 1953, has grown more tense in recent months over worries that the North's nuclear weapons program is nearing the ability to target the U.S. mainland. Pyongyang tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month."We are seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis," Dunford, who also met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said to reporters, according to a local pool report. He earlier told his South Korean counterparts that America is ready "to use the full range of military capabilities to defend our allies and the U.S. homeland," according to U.S. military spokesman Capt. Darryn James.Moon separately called Monday for a peaceful solution to the nuclear standoff, saying that "there must not be another war on the Korean Peninsula," according to his office. In a meeting with top aides at the presidential Blue House, Moon said South Korea would work to safeguard peace on the peninsula in co-operation with the United States and other countries. Moon said North Korea must stop issuing menacing statements and provoking.North Korea, which is angry over new United Nations sanctions condemning its rapidly developing nuclear and missile program, continued its tough stance on Monday. The North accused the United States of mobilizing a huge number of weapons and troops for annual military drills with South Korea that begin later this month. Pyongyang, which claims the drills are war preparation, says it will be ready to send its Guam missile launch plan to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for approval just before or as the drills begin."What matters is that if a second conflict (on the peninsula) erupts, that cannot help but lead to a nuclear war," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said in a commentary. "We are closely monitoring every move by the United States."The commentary said that about 3.5 million young students and workers have volunteered to join or rejoin the army because of a possible confrontation with the United States.Dunford earlier told reporters travelling with him to Asia that he aims to "sense what the temperature is in the region." He also will discuss military options in the event the "diplomatic and economic pressurization campaign" fails."We're all looking to get out of this situation without a war," Dunford said.Chinese President Xi Jinping talked on the phone Saturday with Trump and called for cool-headedness. Xi urged Washington and Pyongyang to avoid words or actions that could worsen the situation.Trump has pushed China, North Korea's biggest economic partner and source of aid, to do more to stop the North's nuclear ambitions. Beijing says its influence on Pyongyang is limited.Trump's recent threats followed a report that U.S. intelligence indicates North Korea can now put a nuclear warhead on its long-range missiles. For all his bluster, Trump's words did not appear to be backed by significant military mobilization on either side of the Pacific, and an important, quiet diplomatic channel remained open.On Sunday, CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, Trump's national security adviser, tried to provide assurances that a conflict is avoidable, while also supporting Trump's tough talk. They said the United States and its allies no longer can afford to stand by as North Korea pushes ahead with the development of a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.___Associated Press writer Hyung-jin Kim contributed to this report.Foster Klug, The Associated Press.

B.C. wildlife struggles with summer heat and wildfires-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-August 13, 2017

A summer heat wave and extensive wildfires in the B.C. Interior have been abnormally hard on animals in the province, especially nestlings.Burnaby's Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. services the entire province, and says it's taking in 20 injured animals a day, with 95 percent suffering from dehydration."The heat is overwhelming them, particularly the past couple weeks have been really bad. We've had a lot of young nestlings, jumping out of nests to avoid the heat," said Sam Smith, communications coordinator at Wildlife Rescue.Smith says when young birds leave the nest too early, they end up falling on the ground and start to waste away, because they don't yet have the strength to fly or move.Smith says it's mostly birds that he sees affected by the heat, including songbirds, waterfowl, marine animals, crows and ravens."Sometimes, they're just so out of sorts, they can't even drink, let alone open up their mouths to be given fluids," he said. In those cases, he says, they have to hydrate the animals with an injection.People can help, though, says Smith. "Leave a little lid out with some water in the shade, or, better yet, fill a small kiddie pool with water and place some branches/stones inside to allow smaller birds a place to perch while they drink."If anyone sees wildlife in distress, they can usher it into some shade, get it water and call Wildlife Rescue at 604-526-7275.Nestlings rescued from wildfires-The wildfires have claimed their own victims, with wildlife rescue an afterthought.Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) in Delta says they have been taking in young birds injured or left behind in the wake of the wildfires."Most of the adult birds at the time or adult animals would know to flee. It's just the young ones that are left behind … So a lot were probably burnt up pretty good, and the ones that could survive, survived, and the ones that were found, were found," said Rob Hope, raptor care manager with OWL.Hope says they have nine baby birds live tested, flight tested and ready to get back to their communities, once the fires subside.

Smoke darkens Prince George skies, hampers air quality-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-August 13, 2017

Smoke from large fires in the Cariboo region has blown into Prince George and surrounding areas after a shift in wind direction over the weekend. The wind carried ashes from the fires south of Prince George, leaving a light dusting on cars and sidewalks that was washed away by overnight rains."It has been smoky in Prince George, incredibly smoky, actually," said Eryn Collins, communication officer with Northern Health, who warned residents to take precautions. At noon on Sunday, the health risk was rated at 15 on the Air Quality Health index (AQHI). Numbers higher than 10 are unusual and indicate a very high risk. The air quality index reached as high as 45 overnight on Saturday.Poor air quality-In Quesnel, the health risk is also rated high and is forecast to remain high overnight and into Monday. While Collins said the rain has helped, smoke concentrations are varied across the region and air quality is very bad in some areas. The concentration of fine particulate matter in the air averaged 244 micrograms per cubic metre compared to the province's target measure of 25 micrograms per cubic metre, over a 24-hour period. That particulate is of concern for anyone with asthma or other chronic illnesses. They are being told to carry emergency medication at all times and avoid the outdoors.Experts suggest people go to shopping malls or public buildings where air is filtered, but noted that air quality indoors may still be a hazard.Anyone experiencing difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort or a sudden onset of coughing should visit a health care provider.Northern Health has taken measures to ensure air quality is maintained inside hospitals in Quesnel and Prince George.Forecast to improve-The smoke is blowing in from the south on a southwesterly wind and causing eerily dark orange and red skies.Officials at B.C. Wildfire Service and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George said there are no fires of note nearby. The Air Quality Health Index is forecast to return to moderate on Sunday night and low on Monday. The largest active wildfire in the region is east of Lucas Lake, about 160 kilometres from Prince George. It is not currently threatening any communities or structures, according to the province.

Marijuana states try to curb smuggling, avert US crackdown-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

PORTLAND, Ore. — Well before Oregon legalized marijuana, its verdant, wet forests made it an ideal place for growing the drug, which often ended up being funneled out of the state for big money. Now, officials suspect pot grown legally in Oregon and other states is also being smuggled out, and the trafficking is putting America's multibillion-dollar marijuana industry at risk.In response, pot-legal states are trying to clamp down on "diversion" even as U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions presses for enforcement of federal laws against marijuana.Tracking legal weed from the fields and greenhouses where it's grown to the shops where it's sold under names like Blueberry Kush and Chornobyl is their so far main protective measure. In Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown recently signed into law a requirement that state regulators track from seed to store all marijuana grown for sale in Oregon's legal market. So far, only recreational marijuana has been comprehensively tracked. Tina Kotek, speaker of the Oregon House, said lawmakers wanted to ensure "we're protecting the new industry that we're supporting here.""There was a real recognition that things could be changing in D.C.," she said. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board says it's replacing its current tracking Nov. 1 with a "highly secure, reliable, scalable and flexible system."California voters approved using a tracking system run by Lakeland, Florida-based Franwell for its recreational pot market. Sales become legal Jan. 1.Franwell also tracks marijuana, using bar-code and radio frequency identification labels on packaging and plants, in Colorado, Oregon, Maryland, Alaska and Michigan."The tracking system is the most important tool a state has," said Michael Crabtree, who runs Denver-based Nationwide Compliance Specialists Inc., which helps tax collectors track elusive, cash-heavy industries like the marijuana business. But the systems aren't fool-proof. They rely on the users' honesty, he said."We have seen numerous examples of people 'forgetting' to tag plants," Crabtree said. Colorado's tracking also doesn't apply to home-grown plants and many noncommercial marijuana caregivers. In California, implementing a "fully operational, legal market" could take years, said state Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents the "Emerald Triangle" region that's estimated to produce 60 per cent of America's marijuana. But he's confident tracking will help."In the first 24 months, we're going to have a good idea who is in the regulated market and who is in black market," McGuire said.Oregon was the first state to decriminalize personal possession, in 1973. It legalized medical marijuana in 1998, and recreational use in 2014.Before that, Anthony Taylor hid his large cannabis crop from aerial surveillance under a forest canopy east of Portland, and tended it when there was barely enough light to see."In those days, marijuana was REALLY illegal," said Taylor, now a licensed marijuana processor and lobbyist. "If you got caught growing the amounts we were growing, you were going to go to prison for a number of years."Taylor believes it's easier to grow illegally now because authorities lack the resources to sniff out every operation. And growers who sell outside the state can earn thousands of dollars per pound, he said.Still, it's hard to say if pot smuggling has gotten worse in Oregon, or how much of the marijuana leaving the state filters out from the legal side.Chris Gibson, executive director of the federally funded Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, said the distinction matters less than the fact that marijuana continues to leave Oregon on planes, trains and automobiles, and through the mail."None is supposed to leave, so it's an issue," Gibson told The Associated Press. "That should be a primary concern to state leadership."On a recent morning, Billy Williams, the U.S. attorney in Oregon, sat at his desk in his office overlooking downtown Portland, a draft Oregon State Police report in front of him. Oregon produces between 132 tons (120 metric tons) and 900 tons (816 metric tons) more marijuana than what Oregonians can conceivably consume, the report said, using statistics from the legal industry and estimates of illicit grows. It identified Oregon as an "epicenter of cannabis production" and quoted an academic as saying three to five times the amount of pot that's consumed in Oregon leaves the state.Sessions himself cited the report in a July 24 letter to Oregon's governor. In it, Sessions asked Brown to explain how Oregon would address the report's "serious findings."Pete Gendron, a licensed marijuana grower who advised state regulators on compliance and enforcement, said the reports' numbers are guesswork, and furthermore are outdated because they don't take into account the marijuana now being sold in Oregon's legal recreational market.A U.S. Justice Department task force recently said the Cole Memorandum , which restricts federal marijuana law enforcement in states where pot is legal, should be reevaluated to see if it should be changed. The governors of Oregon, Colorado, Washington and Alaska — where both medical and recreational marijuana are legal — wrote to Sessions and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in April, warning altering the memorandum "would divert existing marijuana product into the black market and increase dangerous activity in both our states and our neighbouring states."But less than a month later, Sessions wrote to congressional leaders criticizing the federal government's hands-off approach to medical marijuana, and citing a Colorado case in which a medical marijuana licensee shipped pot out of state. In his letter, Sessions opposed an amendment by Oregon Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer and California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher that prevents the Justice Department from interfering with states' medical marijuana. Congress is weighing renewing the amendment for the next fiscal year.In a phone interview from Washington, Blumenauer said the attorney general is "out of step" with most members of Congress, who have become more supportive "of ending the failed prohibition on marijuana.""Marijuana has left Oregon for decades," Blumenauer said. "What's different is that now we have better mechanisms to try to control it."Taylor believes pot smuggling will continue because of the profit incentive, which will end only if the drug is legalized across America. U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, introduced a bill in Congress on Aug. 1 to do just that.___Associated Press writer Kristen Wyatt in Denver contributed to this report.___Follow Andrew Selsky on Twitter at https://twitter.com/andrewselsky-Andrew Selsky, The Associated Press.

Demonstrators rally in Toronto in solidarity with Charlottesville-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

TORONTO — Dozens of demonstrators gathered in downtown Toronto Monday morning to stand in solidarity with victims of the weekend violence in Virginia that killed one woman and injured 19 people.People held signs and chanted phrases decrying racism as they stood opposite the American consulate to express their opposition to white supremacists."No hate, no fear. Fascists aren't welcomed here," members of the group chanted at one point. On Saturday, a car plowed through a group of people as they were protesting a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, was arrested shortly after and charged with second-degree murder and other counts. At Monday's rally in Toronto, Donna Gabaccia, an American professor at the University of Toronto who helped organize the event, said she was "appalled" by the weekend gathering of white supremacists in Charlottesville."I was not surprised that violence and death was the outcome," she said. "I felt that as a U.S. citizen and white person, I need to speak out against racism (and) bigotry, and I'm here in Toronto. The consulate is the most public face of the U.S."Jesse-Blue Forrest, who lives in Toronto but is from a community near Charlottesville, said he came out to the rally to let people know that violence is not the norm in the American city. At the same time, this past weekend's events didn't just happen spontaneously, he said."It's been brewing for a long time," Forrest said. "I really do not want to see that cancer in the United States spreading here in Canada."A vigil was held in Toronto Sunday night to remember the victims of Saturday's violence. A rally was also held in Montreal according to social media and local media reports.Jennifer Cheng , The Canadian Press.

Man accused of driving into protest crowd denied bond-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A man accused of ramming his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally in Virginia was denied bond Monday after the public defender's office said it couldn't represent him and the judge was forced to find a local attorney to fill in.James Alex Fields Jr. was not present in the courtroom but appeared via video monitor dressed in a black-and-white striped uniform. Seated, he answered questions from the judge with simple responses of "Yes, sir" when asked if he understood what was being explained to him. Fields also replied "No, sir" when asked if he had ties to the community of Charlottesville.Judge Robert Downer set an Aug. 25 hearing for the 20-year-old Fields, who has been charged with second-degree murder and other counts.Downer said the public defenders' office informed him it could not represent Fields because a relative of someone in the office was injured in Saturday's protest. He appointed local attorney Charles Weber to represent him. Weber couldn't immediately be reached by The Associated Press.Fields is charged in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, of Charlottesville, who died after a car that police say Fields was driving slammed into a crowd of people protesting the nationalist rally Saturday. Fields was arrested shortly afterward and taken into custody.Fields was fascinated with Nazism, idolized Adolf Hitler, and had been singled out by school officials in the 9th grade for his "deeply held, radical" convictions on race, a former high school teacher said Sunday. Fields also confided that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was younger and had been prescribed an anti-psychotic medication, Derek Weimer said in an interview with The Associated Press. In high school, Fields was an "average" student, but with a keen interest in military history, Hitler, and Nazi Germany, said Weimer, who said he was Fields' social studies teacher at Randall K. Cooper high school in Union, Kentucky, in Fields' junior and senior years."Once you talked to James for a while, you would start to see that sympathy toward Nazism, that idolization of Hitler, that belief in white supremacy," Weimer said. "It would start to creep out."Police say Fields drove his silver Dodge Challenger through a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, killing Heyer and wounding 19 other people. A Virginia State Police helicopter deployed in a large-scale police response to the violence then crashed into the woods outside of town and both troopers on board died.Fields had been photographed hours earlier with a shield bearing the emblem of Vanguard America, one of the hate groups that took part in the "take America back" campaign to protest the removal of a Confederate statue. The group on Sunday denied any association with the suspect.Meanwhile, a message posted Saturday night on a leading neo-Nazi website called The Daily Stormer promised future events that would be "bigger than Charlottesville."The mayor of Charlottesville, political leaders of all political stripes, and activists and community organizers around the country planned rallies, vigils and education campaigns to combat the hate groups. They also urged President Donald Trump to forcefully denounce the organizations, some of which specifically cited Trump's election after a campaign of racially charged rhetoric as validation of their beliefs. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced late Saturday that federal authorities would pursue a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.Weimer recalled that school officials had singled out Fields when he was in 9th grade for his political beliefs and "deeply held, radical" convictions on race and Nazism."It was a known issue," he said.Weimer said Fields left school for a while, and when he came back he was quieter about politics until his senior year, when politicians started to declare their candidacy for the 2016 presidential race. Weimer said Fields was a big Trump supporter because of what he believed to be Trump's views on race. Trump's proposal to build a border wall with Mexico was particularly appealing to Fields, Weimer said. Fields also admired the Confederacy for its military prowess, he said, though they never spoke about slavery. As a senior, Fields wanted to join the army, and Weimer, a former officer in the Ohio National Guard, guided him through the process of applying, he said, believing that the military would expose Fields to people of different races and backgrounds and help him dispel his white supremacist views. But Fields was ultimately turned down, which was a big blow, Weimer said. Weimer said he lost contact with Fields after he graduated and was surprised to hear reports that Fields had enlisted in the army."The Army can confirm that James Alex Fields reported for basic military training in August of 2015, said Army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson. "He was, however, released from active duty due to a failure to meet training standards in December of 2015," she said.Fields' mother, Samantha Bloom, told the AP late Saturday that she knew her son was going to Virginia for a political rally, but she had no idea it involved white supremacists."I just told him to be careful," she said, adding she warned him that if there were protests "to make sure he's doing it peacefully."___This story has been edited to clarify who participated in the white nationalist rally and who posted the message promising future events.Brian Witte And Sarah Rankin, The Associated Press.

Cash crisis exposes rift within Saudi-led coalition in Yemen-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

SANAA, Yemen — Yemen's Central Bank says the Saudi-led coalition is "strangling" the economy by preventing planes from flying in newly-minted cash, reflecting a struggle between the government and the United Arab Emirates, key members of the military alliance. Both are at war with the Shiite Houthi rebels, who control much of northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. But the UAE is believed to be at odds with President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi over his embrace of a local affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood group, and fighters loyal to the two sides have clashed in recent months. In a strongly worded statement issued Sunday, Central Bank Governor Mansr al-Qaiti, who was appointed by Hadi, accused the coalition of banning 13 flights carrying money printed in Russia to the southern city of Aden, where the government is based, since April. He accused the coalition of "strangling the Yemeni economy" and denying it "needed liquidity."For the last two years, Hadi's government has been confined to Aden. As the Saudi-led coalition has waged an air campaign against the Houthis and their allies, the UAE has established a military footprint across the south, partnering with local allies. In the central city of Taiz, fighters allied with the Emirates have battled others aligned with Hadi's government despite the city being besieged by the Houthis for the past two years. At the heart of the dispute is Hadi's alliance with the Islah party, the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, a pan-Arab organization that the UAE and other Gulf countries view as a threat. The wrangling began when Hadi removed his onetime vice-president and prime minister, Khaled Bahah, who was seen as an advocate of reconciliation with the Houthis and who was backed by UAE. Hadi replaced him with Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a powerful military commander who is closely linked to Islah. At a recent meeting with Yemeni tribal leaders in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, Hadi accused the Emiratis of "dictating" candidates for security and military posts, according to two tribal leaders and a security official who attended the gathering. Hadi said he used to comply with UAE wishes, but began to oppose them after their "meddling crossed all lines," including attempts to remove Islah figures from the government and military, the attendees said.Hadi said he complained to the Saudis, who have led the intervention on behalf of his government, but received no response, according to the attendees, who agreed to discuss the closed-door meeting on condition of anonymity.Yemen's war has killed over 10,000 civilians and displaced 3 million people, and pushed the country to the brink of famine. An outbreak of cholera has killed 2,000 people and infected an estimated 500,000, the World Health Organization said Monday. Half the country's health facilities are out of service, including many that were bombed by the coalition. Government workers, including medics and garbage collectors, have not received their salaries in nearly a year, further hindering efforts to combat the cholera outbreak.Ahmed Al-Haj, The Associated Press.

Trump denounces white supremacist groups by name after Virginia violence-[Reuters]-By Scott Malone and Jeff Mason-YAHOONEWS-August 14, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump denounced white supremacists including neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan on Monday, and said racism, hatred and bigotry had no place in America following a violent white-nationalist rally in Virginia.Trump had been assailed by Republicans and Democrats alike for failing to respond more forcefully to Saturday's violence in Charlottesville, in which a woman was killed when a man crashed his car into a group of counter-protesters."Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans," Trump said in a statement to reporters at the White House.Critics said Trump had waited too long to address the bloodshed, and slammed him for stating initially that "many sides" were involved, rather than explicitly condemning white supremacists widely seen as sparking the melee.A 20-year-old man said to have harbored Nazi sympathies as a teenager was facing charges he plowed his car into protesters opposing the white nationalists, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 people. The accused, James Alex Fields, was denied bail at an initial court hearing on Monday. In a strong rebuke to the president, the chief executive of one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, Merck & Co Inc, resigned from a business panel led by Trump, citing a need for leadership countering bigotry.CEO Kenneth Frazier, who is black, did not name Trump or criticize him directly in a statement posted on the drug company's Twitter account, but the rebuke was implicit."America's leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy," said Frazier.(Reporting by Scott Malone and Ian Simpson in Charlottesville and Jeff Mason in Washington; Additional reporting by Susan Heavey in Washington, Bernie Woodall in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Writing by Frances Kerry and Daniel Wallis; Editing by Bill Rigby)

Héma-Québec needs at least 100 new mothers to donate breast milk-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-August 13, 2017

Héma-Québec is reaching out to new mothers in hopes of getting more donors for its breast milk bank. The milk bank, which was launched in April 2014 and is the only one in Quebec, is used to give milk to babies born prematurely. Most mothers who give birth prematurely have difficulty producing their own milk or their ability to do so is compromised because of illness or medication, according to Héma-Québec's website. The agency said that it currently has a little under 200 donors, but that it needs about another 100 new mothers to help increase its supply of breast milk.Spokesperson Laurent Paul Ménard told La Presse Canadienne that the milk bank "can't currently meet the demands" of neonatal intensive care units at hospitals which provide care for premature babies.Any mother living in the Great Montreal and Greater Quebec City areas can register for the program as long as they are in good health, are currently nursing and able to produce additional milk and if their child is less than a year old.Mothers who would like to donate their breast milk can visit the public mother's milk bank section of the Héma-Québec website.
