Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief urges ‘actions’ to cause the US pain-As Iranian leaders castigate US president, IRGC head Jafari says 'taking a decisive position against Trump is just a start,' and that the US must 'witness more painful responses'-By TOI staff and Agencies-September 21, 2017, 6:03 pm

The commander of Iran’s hardline Revolutionary Guards urged his country to use “all its options” and take unspecified “actions” in the next few months to cause pain to the United States in the wake of criticisms of Iran by US President Donald Trump this week.“Time is now ripe for correcting the US miscalculations,” General Mohammad Ali Jafari said Wednesday, a day after Trump addressed the UN and called Iran a “corrupt dictatorship” and a “murderous regime.”Added Jafari: “Now that the US has fully displayed its nature, the government should use all its options to defend the Iranian nation’s interests.”“Taking a decisive position against Trump is just the start,” he went on, in remarks quoted by the Fars news agency, “and what is strategically important is that the US should witness more painful responses in the actions, behavior and decisions that Iran will take in the next few months.”Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Thursday that Trump’s “cheap, ugly, foolish and unreal” remarks before the UN General Assembly were a sign of desperation. In a meeting with a clerical assembly, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the comments by the US president, who also denounced the world powers’ 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, “do not come from power, but from anger, desperation and weak-mindedness.”On Wednesday at the UN, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani derided Trump as a “rogue newcomer” and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the leader of a “rogue and racist regime,” and vowed that Tehran would respond “decisively and resolutely” if the Iran nuclear deal is remade or canceled.Later Wednesday, Rouhani said the Iranian people were waiting for an apology from Trump for his “extremely offensive” rhetoric and “unfounded” allegations about Iran.

N. Korea calls Trump threat to destroy country ‘the sound of a dog barking’-Responding to Trump's UN speech, foreign minister also says he feels sorry for the US president's aides-By Hyung-Jin Kim-September 21, 2017, 6:55 pm

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s foreign minister described President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy his country as “the sound of a dog barking.”The comments were the North’s first response to Trump’s debut speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, during which he vowed to “totally destroy North Korea” if provoked. Trump also called North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “Rocket man.”The North’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York late Wednesday that “It would be a dog’s dream if he intended to scare us with the sound of a dog barking.”South Korean TV footage also showed Ri saying he feels “sorry for his aides” when he was asked about Trump’s “Rocket man” comments.Ri was to give a speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday, according to Yonhap news agency.Trump has unleashed many strong statements on North Korea including his August warning the North will be met with “fire and fury.” The North has responded by a slew of weapons tests and warlike and often-mocking rhetoric against Trump. A top North Korean general called Trump’s “fire and fury” threats “a load of nonsense” let out by “a guy bereft of reason.”The rhetorical battle came as outside experts say North Korea is getting closer to achieve its long-stated goal of building nuclear-armed missiles capable hitting anywhere in the U.S. mainland.Earlier this month, North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date and it was subsequently slapped with fresh, tough U.N. sanctions. North Korea later fired a ballistic missile over Japan and the U.S. military flew powerful bombers and stealth fighter jets over the Korean Peninsula and near Japan in a show of force against the North.

China, India, North Korea and Pakistan expanding their nuclear arsenals-Watchdog group finds slight fall in number of nukes worldwide, from 15,395 to 14,935; Israel one of 9 named nuclear powers, with 80 warheads-By JAN M. OLSEN-September 21, 2017, 6:41 pm-TOI

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The global number of nuclear warheads dropped last year, but it seems China, India, North Korea and Pakistan are expanding the size of their atomic arsenals, a Swedish arms watchdog said Thursday. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said developments in North Korea’s nuclear program “contributed to international political instability with potentially serious knock-on effects.”SIPRI said that as of January 2017, nine countries — the United States, Russia, Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea — together had about 14,935 nuclear weapons, down from 15,395 a year earlier.SIPRI, in its latest yearbook, listed North Korea as not having any deployed warheads but with 10 to 20 “other warheads” which include “operational warheads held in storage and retired warheads awaiting dismantlement.” The watchdog said the North Korean figures were uncertain. “North Korea continues to prioritize its military nuclear program as a central element of its national security strategy,” it said.It said Israel has 80 warheads — the same number as the previous year — and noted that “Israel has a policy of not commenting on its nuclear arsenal.”“Recent steps in the nuclear disarmament field are encouraging,” said Shannon Kile, head of SIPRI’s Nuclear Weapons Project. “The groundwork laid in 2016 has been built on in 2017, with 122 states approving the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the U.N. in July 2017.”“The so-called ban treaty is potentially an important milestone on a long-term path toward nuclear disarmament,” he added.More generally on global security issues, SIPRI noted positive developments such as the entry into force of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal and a United Nations General Assembly resolution to start negotiations in 2017 on eliminating nuclear weapons. However, one issue remains a major challenge to human security: forced displacement. The institute said Africa and the Middle East “together currently host over two-thirds of the world’s displaced population,” adding the number of people displaced last year has “increased significantly” to more than 60 million.Armed conflicts were the main reason for the displacement crises, SIPRI said in its 48th edition of its annual yearbook.

Macron says nuclear deal no longer sufficient safeguard against Iran-Speaking on sidelines of UN, French president says accord needed but Tehran's growing influence in Mideast should be curbed-By AFP-September 21, 2017, 3:52 am-TOI
France’s President Emmanuel Macron declared Wednesday that the Iran nuclear deal is no longer a sufficient safeguard against the growing power that Tehran wields in its region.“We need the 2015 accord,” he said of the agreement. “Is this accord enough? It is not, given the growing pressure that Iran is applying in the region.”Macron was speaking in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, while ministers from Iran the six world powers that signed the accord met to discuss it.US President Donald Trump, who was elected after the deal was signed, has threatened to pull out if Iran does not face greater controls on its missile and nuclear programs. The other deal signatories, including France, insist it remains the best way to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb — but Macron has said it could be improved. He told reporters that Iran’s ballistic missile program must be curtailed and cited the need to reassure “states in the region, and the United States.”
