Ministers declare campaign against Gaza attack tunnels is nearing victory-After another cross-border passage destroyed by IDF, defense minister says threat will become a thing of the past within months-By TOI staff-DEC 11,17

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, responding to the IDF’s destruction of an attack tunnel leading from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, said Sunday that new technologies were being utilized that he hoped would completely neutralize the tunnel threat within months. His optimism was backed by other cabinet members who also predicted victory against the threat. The military said the kilometer-long tunnel was constructed by the Hamas terrorist group. It began in the Gazan city of Khan Younis and extended “hundreds of meters” inside Israeli territory. It was the second such tunnel security forces destroyed in the last six weeks.“Terror tunnels that cross the border into Israeli territory and damage our sovereignty are an unacceptable threat that we will invest every resource in thwarting,” Liberman said in a statement. “Thanks to a joint effort by the IDF, the Defense Ministry, and the security industry, we have attained new technological capabilities in the campaign against tunnel terror. I hope that in the coming months the threat of the tunnels to residents of the Gaza periphery will become a thing of the past.”The tunnel was destroyed using a different method from the one destroyed in October, which was blown up with explosives. The army would not elaborate on the nature of the new technique.Hamas has used tunnels in the past to infiltrate Israeli territory and carry out attacks, including shootings and the kidnapping of an IDF soldier, Gilad Shalit, who was released after five years in captivity in exchange for about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz welcomed the successful destruction of the tunnel, saying, “This action conveys a clear message that the era of the tunnel threat is nearing an end.“The discovery and detonation of the tunnel proves once again the justice of Israel’s decision not to recognize the imaginary reconciliation government being formed these days between [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas,” he added referring to the competing Palestinian factions’ efforts to patch up a longstanding feud. “While Abbas talks about peace and political agreements, Hamas is digging tunnels and preparing for war.”Education Minister Naftali Bennett, a member of the security cabinet, also sounded confident Israel had gained the upper hand in the battle against the tunnels and was close to overcoming the threat completely.“Within a year or two we will topple Hamas’s leading project, the terror tunnels, so now is a time to be extra alert,” Bennett said in a statement. “The destruction of the tunnel is the result of a clear policy against terror. Security forces have developed a systematic system for the location and destruction of the tunnels. It will take time, but Hamas’s tunnels will crumble.”But he cautioned, “We must also prepare for new aerial or naval threats, since Hamas is always looking to innovate.”IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus would not specify where exactly the tunnel was located in Israel, but said it ended in open farmland, approximately one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the nearest Israeli community.“We monitored this tunnel for a long period of time,” Conricus said. The spokesman noted that the tunnel did not pose an immediate threat to Israeli civilians and that it did not have an exit point at the time of the destruction. He said the tunnel appeared to be a “very substantial” one for Hamas, “based on the level of detail.”We just demolished a #Hamas #terrortunnel from #Gaza inside Israeli territory. No immediate risk for Israeli civilians, new tech fielded successfully. pic.twitter.com/9qVtNpxJlN— Jonathan Conricus (@LTCJonathan) December 10, 2017-On October 30, the IDF blew up an attack tunnel belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. In the blast and its aftermath, some 14 terrorists were killed, including two senior commanders and five who were digging inside Israeli territory at the time of the demolition. In response to October’s tunnel demolition, Islamic Jihad vowed to avenge its operatives. A month later the group shelled an army post northeast of the Gaza Strip, which resulted in some equipment damage but no Israeli injuries. In this weekend’s blast, no Palestinians were reported killed, Conricus said. However, he warned, in the future, tunnels “can become death traps for terrorists digging them.”The officer said the military did not see a connection between the tunnel demolition and ongoing, low-level protests in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, which Hamas is actively encouraging, against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.“We see these as separate events,” Conricus said. “There is no direct link, other than that the Hamas terrorist group is behind both of them.”

Leaving for Paris, Netanyahu slams European ‘hypocrisy’ on Jerusalem-PM says that while he respects Europe, he will not tolerate its silence on Gaza rocket fire and 'the terrible incitement against us'-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-DEC 11,17

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set off for a two-day trip to Paris and Brussels on Saturday night, criticizing European “hypocrisy” and “double standards” in remarks he made to the press before take-off.Boarding the plane to Paris, Netanyahu said that while he ascribes “great importance” to Europe, he could not tolerate how some countries were quick to slam US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last week, but failed to condemn rocket fire from Gaza into Israel in the past two days or Palestinian incitement.“While I respect Europe, I am not prepared to accept a double standard from it,” Netanyahu said. “I hear voices from there condemning President Trump’s historic statement but I have not heard condemnations of the rockets fired at Israel or the terrible incitement against it.”“I am not prepared to accept this hypocrisy, and as usual at this important forum, I will present Israel’s truth without fear and with head held high,” he added. Netanyahu will be meet in Brussels with European Union leaders on Monday.Protests broke out in much of the Muslim world following Trump’s declaration, in a speech on Wednesday, that he recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and would ultimately move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.Trump stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites. But the Palestinians responded furiously.Palestinian leaders called for “days of rage” on both Friday and Saturday in the West Bank and Gaza, which saw thousands of Palestinians clashing with Israeli security personnel in different areas, and terror group Hamas urged a new intifada. On Friday night, Gaza-based terror groups fired rockets at Israel, with one landing in the southern town of Sderot; Israel responded with air strikes on Hamas targets. On Saturday, the Hamas-run health ministry said two Hamas gunmen were killed in one of the strikes on a Hamas facility in Nusseirat in the central Gaza Strip. The rocket on Sderot caused minor damage and no injuries.Trump’s declaration was met with dismay in much of Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron said that France “does not approve” of Trump’s policy on Jerusalem, while his foreign minister said the US had “excluded” itself from the peace process. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Trump’s speech had “the potential to send us backwards to even darker times than the ones we are already living in.”Some European countries rallied to Israel’s side. Hungary on Thursday blocked a joint European statement that would have condemned Trump’s move. The Czech foreign minister on Wednesday said the Czech Republic recognized Jerusalem in the pre-1967 borders. The country’s president, Milos Zeman, on Thursday expressed support for Trump’s declaration, arguing that the Czech Embassy should have been moved to Jerusalem years ago.Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly agreed Saturday on the need to counter Trump’s move, and vowed to urge Washington to reconsider.Netanyahu is set to meet with Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Sunday. A day later, he will meet senior European Union officials and the foreign ministers of all 28 member states in Brussels, the first such meeting in over 20 years. An Israeli official told the Times of Israel that Netanyahu is also intent on updating them on Iran’s inroads and entrenchment in neighboring Syria, where a civil war on Israel’s borders has been raging for seven years.Netanyahu is expected to try to convince Macron to reconsider his support for the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, and bring up France’s suspected stalling of Israeli efforts to have the EU convene another EU-Israel Association Council, a ministerial-level forum that last took place in 2012.When the two last spoke last month, the discussion largely surrounded the mysterious resignation, since withdrawn, of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.Netanyahu has previously harshly criticized the European stance on Israel, and an Israeli source in the government on Friday described Netanyahu’s trip to France and Brussels as a venture into the “lion’s den.”This past summer, Netanyahu was caught in a hot mic moment blasting Europe’s “crazy” policy on Israel. In a closed-door meeting in Budapest in July with the leaders of four Central European countries, Netanyahu said “the European Union is the only association of countries in the world that conditions the relations with Israel, that produces technology in every area, on political conditions. “It’s crazy. It’s actually crazy,” he said, referring to the EU’s insistence on conditioning some agreements with Israel on progress in the peace process. He referred the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which has not been renewed since 2000.In Paris on Saturday, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated against Netanyahu’s visit, calling to boycott Israel and decrying Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In Brussels, a group of 67 members of the European Parliament have written to Mogherini asking her to “press Israel on violations of human rights against Palestinians such as the practice of administrative detention, systematic expulsions of Palestinian communities and the blockade of Gaza.”

Security guard seriously wounded in Jerusalem terror stabbing-Hospital battling to save victim, who was stabbed in the heart; police subdue suspect after attack outside the city's central bus station-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-DEC 11,17

A Palestinian terrorist stabbed a security guard in the chest,  seriously wounding him, at the entrance to the Jerusalem Central Bus Station on Sunday, before being tackled by police and a passerby, officials said, Graphic video footage from the scene showed the terrorist slowly handing his belongings to the security guard, who was checking travelers at the door to the station, before suddenly taking out a knife and plunging it into the guard’s chest. The terrorist then tried to flee the scene, but a police officer and civilians chased after him and tackled him to the ground. Police denied media reports that the terrorist had been shot or killed. He was taken into custody for further questioning.Medics from the Magen David Adom ambulance service said they tried to stop the bleeding and applied bandages during the five-minute ambulance ride to the hospital. The victim, 46, was taken to the capital’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment where doctors were battling to stabilize his condition and save his life, said Dr. Ofer Merrin, the head of trauma center.“The knife, unfortunately, hit his heart. His condition has stabilized, but I cannot say that there’s not threat to his life because, like I said, he’s in serious condition,” the doctor said, adding that he was unconscious and connected to a respirator.Minister of Public Security and Strategic Affairs Gilad Erdan blamed the Palestinian Authority for inciting terror attacks.“This afternoon’s terror attack in Jerusalem is a direct result of the ongoing incitement to terror by the PA and Fatah, which is working with Hamas to instigate violence,” Erdan said.“Abu Mazen continues to demonstrate that he is not a true partner for peace, and now that he has established a unity government with Hamas , he is responsible for Hamas’ murderous incitement as well. I am praying for the quick recovery of the security guard who was wounded in the attack.”According to the Shin Bet security service, the suspected terrorist is a 24-year-old Palestinian from the northern West Bank, near the city of Nablus. His name was not released. The 24-year-old Palestinian had a permit allowing him to work in the so-called “seam region,” surrounding the West Bank, but not inside Israel proper, the Shin Bet said.He had no known terrorist ties, the security service added. After he was subdued, the suspect was stripped to ensure he did not have a suicide vest or other weapon hidden under his clothes. Officers at the scene recovered the knife that was used in the attack. The area around the bus station was closed off following the attack. The stabbing comes amid heightened tensions in the region, after Palestinian groups called for mass demonstrations and a violent uprising in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

IDF stays on upped alert as West Bank protests appear to lose steam-Demonstrations over US capital recognition have fallen short of predictions, but fears remain they could pick up renewed momentum-By Judah Ari Gross-DEC 11,17

The thousands of Palestinians who turned out to protest US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Friday gave way to mere hundreds of demonstrators on Saturday, with expectations that fewer yet would take to the streets on Sunday. The military was conducting constant assessments to decide whether or not to keep in place the additional battalions that it sent into the West Bank at the end of last week, ahead of the protests. As of Sunday afternoon, the added troops remained in place. The sharp decline in the intensity of the protests from Friday to Saturday, coupled with the fact that schools in the West Bank reopened on Sunday, indicated that those reinforcements could be released shortly, barring an unforeseen development. It was not immediately clear if Sunday afternoon’s stabbing attack outside the Jerusalem bus station would constitute such an unforeseen development.“We’re doing a situational assessment, tracking everything that’s happening,” a military official said Sunday. On Thursday, the army sent an unspecified number of extra battalions to the West Bank, it said, out of concerns that additional forces would be necessary to respond to violent riots in the area. Not all of those added troops ended up being necessary, as fewer Palestinians came out to demonstrate and riot than were expected. The protests in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, by all accounts, could have been far larger, with major Palestinian groups, like Fatah and Hamas, calling for mass demonstrations and seemingly all the world’s media outlets watching the developments. Hamas, specifically, called for a new intifada, or uprising. But, for whatever reason, those mass demonstrations didn’t occur. At their peak on Friday, thousands of Palestinians took part in protests in the West Bank, spread out in some 30 locations. Hundreds of rioters were treated by the Palestinian Red Crescent, the vast majority for tear gas inhalation. A few dozen were shot by rubber bullets, and a handful were hit by live fire, though none were critically wounded. In the Gaza Strip, two protesters were reportedly shot and killed as they rioted near the security fence and, according to the army, ignored calls to halt and warning shots in the air. This weekend’s West Bank protests were similar in size to those that took place in July after Israel installed metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount, following a deadly terror attack in which two police officers were killed. However, in the so-called “Temple Mount crisis” of July, East Jerusalem served as a far more prominent center of unrest and violence, with thousands of young men clashing with Israeli troops — which did not happen on the same scale this past weekend.Yet, while the intensity of the Palestinian protests has so far fallen short of predictions, that does not preclude the possibility that they will pick up renewed momentum.Any number of events could spark larger protests. For instance, if a large number of Palestinian rioters, or if a particularly young one, were killed by Israeli troops in a demonstration, that could bring more people to the streets.Seemingly for that reason, the military has been cautious to avoid using live fire during West Bank protests, preferring instead less-lethal riot dispersal weapons, like tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. In his White House proclamation on Wednesday, Trump defied experts’ dire warnings as to severe repercussions on the entire Middle East that would stem from his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. So far, the region hasn’t fulfilled the predictions.Perhaps mitigating Trump’s proclamation was the fact that he remained vague, apparently careful not to specify the boundaries of Jerusalem or rule out the possibility that Palestinians could get East Jerusalem as a capital in a future two-state solution."Where Is Jerusalem??": The @StateDept acknowledges that Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but this what happens when @APDiploWriter asks where Jerusalem is… pic.twitter.com/R45M2OxTX1— Amichai Stein (@AmichaiStein1) December 8, 2017-Additionally, hours after his speech, Trump signed a waiver preventing the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for at least another six months. Moreover, when asked, the US State Department would not even say that Jerusalem is located inside Israel.

Tens of thousands rally in Morocco against US Jerusalem move-Trump decision 'will deprive the Palestinians of their land,' says protester among huge crowd-By AFP and TOI staff-DEC 11,17

RABAT, Morocco — Tens of thousands of protesters rallied in Morocco’s capital Rabat on Sunday as demonstrations against US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital continued to spread.Waving Palestinian flags, a sea of demonstrators marched from Rabat’s Bab el-Had square to Morocco’s parliament building, down Mohammed VI Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare.“Jerusalem, capital of Palestine!” read a banner carried by the protesters, who included families, Islamist sympathizers, trade unionists and local activists.“The Palestinian people have suffered so much and continue to suffer because of Israel’s barbaric colonization,” said one of the protesters, 43-year-old Mustapha.“We must, more than ever, make our voices heard against this decision by Trump that will deprive the Palestinians of their land,” said the lawyer from Casablanca, accompanied by his six-year-old daughter.Morocco’s King Mohammed VI earlier expressed his “deep concern” over Trump’s move, acting as head of the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Al-Quds Committee, which lobbies on issues related to Jerusalem. In a Wednesday address from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government as merely based on reality. The move was hailed by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum. Trump stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites.

Erdogan: Israel a ‘terrorist state’ that kills children-Turkish president vows to use all means in support of Palestinians, the 'innocent victim' of Trump's Jerusalem recognition-By Agencies and TOI staff-DEC 11,17

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described Israel as a child-killing “terrorist state” Sunday and vowed to use “all means to fight” against the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.“Palestine is an innocent victim… As for Israel, it is a terrorist state, yes, terrorist!” Erdogan said in a speech in the central city of Sivas. “We will not abandon Jerusalem to the mercy of a state that kills children.”The Turkish leader has issued sharp rhetoric against Israel almost daily in the wake of the US measure on Jerusalem. On Saturday, Erdogan described Israel as a “state of occupation” that used “terror” against the Palestinians.“Israel is a state of occupation,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul. “And now they are making use of terror and are bombing young people and children.”Israeli airstrikes in response to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip killed two gunmen from the Hamas terror group before dawn and wounded 14, among them civilians.Several rockets were fired at Israel from Hamas-run Gaza on Thursday and Friday, one of them landing in Sderot and another being intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, has called for a new intifada to liberate Jerusalem, and urged Palestinians to confront soldiers and settlers. In an address last Wednesday from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government as merely based on reality. The move was hailed by Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum. Trump stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites.

Pope calls again for ‘wisdom and prudence’ as anti-Trump riots continue-Pontiff: 'Only a negotiated solution between Israelis and Palestinians can bring a stable and lasting peace'-By AFP-TOI-DEC 11,17

VATICAN CITY, Holy See — Pope Francis on Sunday renewed a call for “wisdom and prudence” over US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, which has sparked protests and clashes.“The Holy Father renews his appeal for the wisdom and prudence of everyone, and raises fervent prayers so that the leaders of nations, in this time of special gravity, commit themselves to avert a new spiral of violence,” a statement from the Vatican said. There were fresh protests in the Middle East and elsewhere Sunday over Trump’s declaration, a move that drew global condemnation and sparked several days of unrest in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.Trump in his White House speech insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue, and described his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government as merely based on reality. He stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites.Noting that Jerusalem was sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the pope reiterated the church’s “well-known position concerning the singular character of the Holy City and the essential need for respecting the status quo”.“At the same time the Holy See reiterates its own conviction that only a negotiated solution between Israelis and Palestinians can bring a stable and lasting peace, and guarantee the peaceful co-existence of two states within internationally recognized borders,” the statement added.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Crews battling California wildfires gird for return of high winds-[Reuters]-By Caroline Anderson-YAHOONEWS-December 11, 2017

VENTURA, Calif. (Reuters) - Santa Ana winds that have stoked wildfires across Southern California, destroying hundreds of buildings and forcing evacuations of some 200,000 people, are expected to return in force on Sunday, authorities said.Firefighters had gained some ground battling the fires that have burned over the past week as the winds eased on Saturday. At least one person has been killed. The Skirball Fire in Los Angeles was 75 percent contained, while the Creek and Rye Fires in Los Angeles County were 85 percent and 80 percent contained, officials said. The largest blaze, the Thomas Fire, has blackened 155,000 acres in Ventura County and was only 15 percent contained as of Saturday night, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).Winds and the rugged terrain have hampered firefighting efforts there, authorities said. The National Weather Service is forecasting top wind speeds to increase to 55 miles per hour on Sunday, up from the 40 miles per hour recorded on Saturday. After gusty winds overnight, authorities early on Sunday morning ordered residents to evacuate much of Toro Canyon, a few miles east of Santa Barbara, as the Thomas Fire threatened that area. The oceanside city of Carpinteria was placed under a voluntary evacuation order, as well."The fire continues to threaten structures in various parts of the cities of Ventura, Ojai, Casitas Springs, Santa Paula, Carpinteria, Fillmore and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County and Matilija Canyon," Cal Fire's website said on Saturday night.Authorities lifted evacuation orders earlier on Saturday for sections of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The blazes have destroyed nearly 800 structures, and a 70-year-old woman died Wednesday in a car accident as she attempted to flee the flames in Ventura County.North of San Diego, the 4,100-acre Lilac Fire was 50 percent contained by Saturday, officials said.A brush fire broke out Saturday night in the city of Monrovia in Los Angeles County, prompting temporary evacuations, the U.S. Forest Service said on Twitter.Among those evacuated included a group of Boy Scouts who were camping in the area, the Los Angeles Times reported.Crews knocked down the 3-acre blaze and there were "no structures damaged," the city of Monrovia said on its web site.California Governor Jerry Brown issued emergency proclamations last week for Santa Barbara, San Diego, Los Angeles and Ventura counties, freeing up additional resources to fight the fires.President Donald Trump issued a federal proclamation that enables agencies to coordinate relief efforts.(Reporting by Caroline Anderson in Ventura, California; Additional reporting by Peter Szekely in New York, Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee, Sharon Bernstein in Sacramento, California, Keith Coffman in Denver and Joseph Ax in Princeton, New Jersey; Editing by Toby Chopra)

Trump attends civil rights museum opening; black leaders stay away-[Reuters]-By Jeff Mason-YAHOONEWS-December 9, 2017

JACKSON, Miss. (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump flew to Mississippi on Saturday to attend the opening of a civil rights museum, but his visit was marred by the absence of top African-American leaders who stayed away in protest of his policies and record on race relations.Trump toured the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and delivered brief remarks, paying tribute to African-Americans who fought institutionalized racism, including Medgar Evers, the civil rights activist who was murdered outside his home in Jackson in 1963."We want our country to be a place where every child from every background can grow up free from fear, innocent of hatred and surrounded by love, opportunity and hope," Trump said in prepared remarks.Referring to Evers and other civil rights leaders showcased in the museum, Trump said: "Today we strive to be worthy of their sacrifice. We pray for inspiration from their example."Trump acknowledged Evers' wife Myrlie and brother Charles in the audience.U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia, a Democrat who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, said on Thursday that he would not go to the museum opening because of Trump's presence."President Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum," Lewis said in a statement with Mississippi Democratic U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson, who also declined to attend. The two men also cited Trump's "disparaging comments about women, the disabled, immigrants and National Football League players" and said the president had shown disrespect to those who fought for civil rights in Mississippi. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also took issue with Trump's attendance. However, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, who is black and ran against Trump in the early 2016 Republican presidential primaries before dropping out, accompanied the president on his tour of the museum.Trump, a Republican, has had a complicated record on race relations. He was a leading proponent of the false theory that Democratic President Barack Obama, the first black U.S. president, was not born in the United States. Obama was born in Hawaii, a U.S. state. In August, Trump unleashed a firestorm of criticism, including from Republicans and a top adviser in his administration, for saying that both left- and right-wing protesters were at fault for violence at a white supremacist-led rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one woman died.White House spokesman Raj Shah said on Friday ahead of the visit that the civil rights movement was about fighting intolerance, hatred and bigotry and that Trump intended to honor the leaders of that struggle. The White House called the decision by Lewis and Thompson not to attend "unfortunate."Trump concluded his remarks by saying: "Today we pay solemn tribute to our heroes of the past and dedicate ourselves to building a future of freedom, equality justice and peace."(Reporting by Jeff Mason; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn)
