Umm Charles-Is Queen Elizabeth descended from the Prophet Muhammad? - New study revives old claims tracing the British monarch's lineage back 43 generations to the founder of Islam-By TOI staff-APR 8,18

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Church of England, but she might also be able to claim a role in Islam after a recent study asserted she is a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.A March report by the Moroccan newspaper Al-Ousboue traced her lineage back 43 generations to the founder of Islam, sparking widespread interest across the Middle East.“It builds a bridge between our two religions and kingdoms,” Abdelhamid Al-Aouni said, according to The Daily Mail. The claim is not new, and was originally published in 1986 by Burke’s Peerage, the noted guide to royal genealogy. The link was also reportedly verified by Ali Gomaa, the former grand mufti of Egypt, which would make Elizabeth a distant cousin of fellow monarchs King Abdullah II of Jordan and Mohammed VI of Morocco.According to the family tree, she is descendant from the Prophet’s daughter, Fatima.According to the Economist, much of the purported link revolves around a Muslim princess called Zaida, who fled an attack on Seville in Muslim Spain in the 11th century and found refuge in the court of Alfonso VI of Castille. There, “she changed her name to Isabella, converted to Christianity and bore Alfonso a son, Sancho, one of whose descendants later married the Earl of Cambridge,” the Economist said. However, the report notes that Zaida’s own origins are not without debate.“Some make her the daughter of Muatamid bin Abbad, a wine-drinking caliph descended from the Prophet. Others say she married into his family,” the report said.

Several reported killed as car drives into crowd in Germany’s Munster-Dozens said injured in possible attack; police say driver of vehicle has killed himself-By Agencies and TOI staff-APR 8,18

Several people were killed and dozens were reported injured Saturday when a car plowed into pedestrians in the German city of Munster, local media reports said. The DPA news agency said a car had hit bystanders in the western city. Police confirmed there had been casualties, and said the driver of the vehicle had killed himself.“The driver shot himself,” a police spokeswoman said, adding that around 30 people were injured in the incident.According to the online edition of the Spiegel magazine, German authorities were “assuming” the incident was an attack, though there was no immediate official confirmation.Additional photos emerge from scene where driver rammed vehicle into restaurant Grosser Kiepenkerl, in Munster, Germany – leaving three dead and more than 30 injured. pic.twitter.com/OLUbYhsdNI— Josh Caplan (@joshdcaplan) April 7, 2018-“There are deaths and injured. Please avoid the area, we are on scene,” the regional police service said on Twitter.Police also urged people to avoid “speculation” about the incident.

EU says Gaza deaths ‘raise serious questions about Israel’s use of force’-After 9 killed in Friday protests, union says violence by both sides must be addressed, calls for 'utmost restraint'-By TOI staff and Agencies-APR 8,18

The European Union on Saturday said the deaths of Palestinian protesters during marches along the Gaza border a day earlier “raise serious questions about proportionate use of force” by Israel.Such concerns, the EU said in a statement, “must be addressed.”The EU also said that “Reports by the Israeli Defense Forces about throwing of stones and firebombs against their positions and attempts to cross the fence into Israel must also be clarified.”The statement called on all sides to exercise “utmost restraint,” and stressed that “The priority now must be to avoid any further escalation and loss of life.”It urged Palestinian factions to “engage seriously to allow the Palestinian Authority to resume its full responsibilities in Gaza, which is crucial for improving the situation of the people in Gaza,” adding that “The EU stands ready to continue to support this process with all the instruments at its disposal.”On Friday night the US blocked a UN Security Council statement supporting the right of Palestinians to “demonstrate peacefully” and endorsing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for an independent investigation into the deadly protests in Gaza.Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters at UN headquarters in New York on Friday evening that 14 of the 15 council nations agreed to the statement, but the United States, Israel’s closest ally, objected.Mansour called the US rejection “very irresponsible,” saying it gave Israel “the green light to continue with their onslaught against the civilian population” in Gaza.In response, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said the council “should condemn Hamas, which uses children as human shields while risking their lives, and must call for the end of these provocations which only increase the violence and tensions.”Tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered along the Gaza border on Friday, burning tires and throwing firebombs and rocks at Israeli soldiers, who responded with tear gas and live fire, the army and witnesses said, as Palestinians held a second “March of Return” protest.Mansour said that nine Gaza civilians were killed and over 1,000 wounded in the clashes, and again urged the UN Security Council to demand an independent investigation into the deaths. He told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York that one child was among the dead and a large number of children were injured, at least 48 according to one report. He said his information came from the Hamas-run Health Ministry and Red Crescent officials in Gaza.Mansour condemned “these massacres in the strongest possible terms” and demanded a halt and an independent investigation. The IDF said on Friday it thwarted multiple efforts to breach the border fence — and that it used live fire to do so in some instances — as well as attempts to activate bombs against the troops under the cover of smoke.Mansour said the United Nations would keep all its options open including seeking a Security Council presidential statement or resolution, going to the UN General Assembly or the Geneva-based Human Rights Council where there are no vetoes, and urging secretary-general Guterres to establish an independent investigation.“We will not give up,” Mansour said. “We will continue knocking on doors.”The Arab League’s UN Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz said Arab ministers would also discuss options to pursue the Palestinian issue at a meeting in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on April 12 ahead of a summit of Arab leaders in the country on April 15.Earlier on Friday, Kuwait, which represents Arab countries on the council, circulated a draft press statement to member states that reaffirmed Palestinians’ right to peaceful protest, called for an independent and transparent probe of the clashes over the past week, and urged for restraint on both sides. On Twitter, Kuwait’s UN mission said the UNSC “should address this matter and have a unified positions… What is happening is a violation of international law.”On Thursday, the White House had called on Palestinians to engage in solely peaceful protests and stay at least 500 meters from Gaza’s border with Israel. US President Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt said protesters “should remain outside the 500-meter buffer zone; and should not approach the border fence in any way or any location.”He added, in a statement: “We condemn leaders and protestors who call for violence or who send protestors — including children — to the fence, knowing that they may be injured or killed. Instead, we call for a renewed focus by all parties on finding solutions to the dire humanitarian challenges facing Gazans.”Last Saturday, the US blocked a similar draft UN Security Council statement urging restraint and calling for an investigation of clashes on the border, diplomats said.Kuwait presented that statement as well, which called for an “independent and transparent investigation” of the violence. It also expressed “grave concern at the situation at the border.” And it reaffirmed “the right to peaceful protest” and expressed the council’s “sorrow at the loss of innocent Palestinian lives.”Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said Hamas organizers were trying to use protesters as a diversion to “open up the fence and then to insert terrorists into Israel.” Conricus said snipers were used “sparingly” and only against those that pose a “significant threat.”Friday’s demonstration was the second of what Gaza’s ruling Hamas terror group said would be several weeks of “March of Return” protests which Hamas leaders say ultimately aim to see the removal of the border and the liberation of Palestine.Israel has accused Hamas of trying to carry out border attacks under the cover of large protests and said it will prevent a breach of the fence at all costs.

Hundreds march in Israeli Arab town in support of Gaza protests-Demonstrators wave Palestinian flags, photos of slain journalist. One says: 'What do they expect of a people who have been under blockade for more than 9 years?'-By TOI staff-APR 8,18

Some 1,500 people took part in a demonstration in the Israeli-Arab town of Sakhnin Saturday in solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip.Protesters included Arab Knesset members as well as journalists, the Ynet new site reported. Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and held pictures of slain journalist Yasser Murtaja, who was shot and killed during Friday’s “March of Return” in the Strip.Five other Palestinian journalists wearing identifying clothing were reportedly shot during the violent demonstration, as tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered along the Gaza border. Protesters burned tires and threw firebombs, explosives, and rocks at Israeli soldiers, who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and in some cases live fire-Arab journalist Wadia Awawdeh said the media casualties were proof that the IDF was acting in an unlawful manner on the border. He called on his “Israeli colleagues to raise their voices and protest the harm to their Palestinian colleagues…It is a human, moral, and ethical obligation.”A female protester who did not give her name said the Israeli army’s conduct “is unacceptable and inhumane. What do they expect of a people who have been under blockade for more than nine years, without work or livelihood, without the option of leaving, traveling, living their lives? With power cuts every few hours, in the heat and in the cold.”Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for over a decade, which it says is necessary to prevent Hamas, which is regarded as a terror group by Israel and much of the West and is sworn to Israel’s destruction, from smuggling in weapons and material used for digging tunnels into Israel. Egypt also maintains the blockade.Gaza, a tiny strip of land sandwiched between Israel and Egypt, has seen conditions steadily deteriorate since Hamas overran the territory in 2007 and took control from the internationally backed Palestinian Authority.Israel and Egypt clamped the blockade in an attempt to weaken Hamas, and Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, hoping to regain control, has stepped up pressure on Hamas by cutting salaries of civil servants and limiting electricity deliveries. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said nine people were killed and hundreds were wounded on Friday, including 293 by live fire. It said 25 of those wounded were in serious condition. Among those hurt were 12 women and 48 minors, the ministry added. The IDF, which did not confirm the figures, said it thwarted multiple efforts to breach the border fence — and that it used live fire to do so in some instances — as well as attempts to activate bombs against the troops under the cover of smoke.Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said Hamas organizers were trying to use protesters as a diversion to “open up the fence and then to insert terrorists into Israel.” Conricus said snipers were used “sparingly” and only against those that pose a “significant threat.”Friday’s demonstration was the second of what Gaza’s ruling Hamas terror group said would be several weeks of “March of Return” protests which Hamas leaders say ultimately aim to see the removal of the border and the liberation of Palestine.Israel has accused Hamas of trying to carry out border attacks under the cover of large protests and said it will prevent a breach of the fence at all costs.Israel’s defense minister has warned that protesters approaching the border fence endanger their lives, drawing condemnation from rights groups that said such seemingly broad open-fire rules are unlawful.AP contributed to this report.

Meretz head calls to uninvite Honduras president from Independence Day ceremony-Tamar Zandberg says Honduras is a serial human rights violator and having Juan Orlando Hernandez light a torch at ceremony would dishonor Israel-By TOI staff-APR 8,18
The head of the left wing Meretz party called on Saturday for Israel to rescind an invitation to the president of Honduras to light a torch at the country’s 70th anniversary of independence, saying that the Central American nation was a corrupt, human rights violator and that having him at the ceremony would dishonor the country.Tamar Zandberg sent her letter to Culture Minister Miri Regev, after Regev announced that Juan Orlando Hernandez will be the first foreign state leader to be granted that honor. The decision to have Hernandez light a torch was largely seen as an exercise to resolve a dispute over the attendance of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the annual eve of Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl despite it being a breach of protocol. The presence of a foreign head of state would, according to protocol rules, require Netanyahu to also participate in the official state ceremony, Hebrew-language media reported.“Honduras is one of the most corrupt and dangerous countries in the world for its citizens,” Zandberg wrote.  “According to reports, the civil police, the military police and the Honduran army were involved in recent years in series human rights violations, harassment, torture, and extrajudicial killings” of anybody who opposed the regime, she wrote, singling out journalists, opposition figures, environmentalists, land rights activists and human rights activists.“I believe it is correct to ask you to cancel this decision to have the president participate in the torch ceremony,” Zandberg wrote.“The phrase ‘for the honor of the state of Israel’ said by those who light the torches, which is uttered in order to praise all that is good and beautiful in the state of Israel, will pale in the face of this unwanted guest and the circumstances of his invitation,” she wrote.Hernandez, who has led a pro-Israel government since first elected in 2014, has confirmed his attendance at the April 18 event. That could resolve an ongoing feud between Netanyahu and Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, who has been vehemently opposed to the premier’s intention to break from decades of tradition according to which the Knesset speaker is the most senior official at the event. Edelstein has threatened to boycott the event if Netanyahu attends, and has been repeatedly slammed by Regev for his stance.Netanyahu is said to have decided to attend the event, but not yet to have decided whether to speak.A former head of the Shin Bet internal security service on Friday called on the public to switch TV channels or turn off the box if  Netanyahu speaks at the ceremony. In a specially opened WhatsApp group, Carmi Gillon wrote, “The torch-lighting ceremony has the biggest ratings of the year and is broadcast on the three public networks.“All viewers wishing to express their protest at the turning of the country’s most official state event to mark 70 years of independence into Netanyahu’s political event should turn off the TV or switch channels during his speech.“It’s a protest that can be measured and for which data can be gathered almost in real time. If several hundred thousand people do this, it could have an impressive public effect.”Hernandez began his diplomatic career in 1992 in an Israeli Foreign Ministry Mashav (Agency for International Development Cooperation) course. Regev said that Hernandez will stand alongside a representative from Mashav, which is being honored this year, when the representative lights the torch.Mashav has trained almost 300,000 people from some 140 countries in its diplomatic and aid-related education programs in various fields such as agriculture and medicine.“Welcome, President of Honduras,” Regev said in a statement. “I am happy and proud that the Honduran president, who is an alumnus of Mashav, will attend the ceremony and accompany the torch-lighter from the Foreign Ministry.”In February, Honduras was one of only eight countries that opposed a UN General Assembly resolution condemning US President Donald Trump’s December recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, along with Guatemala, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, heaped praise on Honduras for its UN vote during a visit this month, saying it showed the two countries’ bonds were evident.“That was not an easy decision for any country to have to vote on, but the people of Honduras stood with us in being able to make that decision for ourselves and decide where we want our embassy and to know that is our right,” Haley said in a joint news conference with Hernandez.A senior Israeli diplomatic source was quoted last month by Army Radio as saying Honduras was ready “in principle” to move its embassy to Jerusalem, provided that Netanyahu first makes an official visit to Honduras.Trump bucked decades of US foreign policy with his December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and setting in motion of plans to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv. In February the US administration announced that it would open its Jerusalem embassy in May 2018 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence according to the Gregorian calendar, several weeks after the Jewish calendar anniversary.Trump’s decision, welcomed by Israel, has been condemned by many leaders and foreign ministers across the world, who have said the city’s status should be determined through negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The move enraged the Palestinians, who have since boycotted the US administration and staged many protests against the decision, some of them violent.

Airstrikes return to Syria’s Ghouta, killing 40 civilians as talks sputter-Russian-backed regime forces advance on last rebel-held town near capital after truce with Islamist fighters collapses-By Maya Gebeily-APR 8,18-TOI

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AFP) — Air strikes killed 40 civilians in the last opposition-held town in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta on Friday and the army launched a ground offensive on its outskirts after talks sputtered over a rebel withdrawal.Backed by Russia, Syrian troops have captured nearly all of the one-time opposition stronghold of Ghouta with a combination of ferocious bombing raids and negotiated withdrawals. All that remained was its largest town of Douma, held by the Jaish al-Islam Islamist faction and home to tens of thousands of people.Moscow announced a deal with Jaish al-Islam last Sunday, ushering in three consecutive days of evacuations from Douma that saw nearly 3,000 fighters and civilians bused to northern Syria. But the evacuations stalled this week amid reports Jaish al-Islam remained divided over a withdrawal, and heavy bombing hit Douma on Friday afternoon for the first time in around 10 days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of air strikes hit various parts of Douma, including some suspected to have been carried out by Russian warplanes.“At least 40 civilians including 8 children have been killed in air strikes and rocket fire on Douma,” it said.Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said dozens of people had been injured. On Douma’s outskirts, Syria’s army entered fields surrounding the town, state news agency SANA said.Regime forces were locked in violent clashes with Jaish al-Islam rebels in agricultural areas to the southwest and east of the town, the Observatory said.-Dentists operating-A medic inside Douma described to AFP chaos at the local hospital as wounded and dead were brought in.“The hospital is in a state of panic,” the medic said.“Dentists are carrying out emergency surgeries. Dead bodies are being brought in pieces and are unrecognizable.”A doctor inside the town said state television was broadcasting the bombardment live.“It feels like we’re back in the days of the Gaza war,” when Israel was bombing the Palestinian enclave and people around the world watched, he said, giving his name only as Mohammed.State news agency SANA said Syrian air strikes hit the town on Friday in response to deadly rebel mortar fire from Douma. It said mortar shells hit several suburbs of the capital and killed at least four people and wounded more than a dozen. But Jaish al-Islam spokesman Hamza Bayraqdar in a statement late Friday denied that the group had targeted any Damascus neighborhood. The regime and its ally Russia launched a blistering air and ground offensive on Eastern Ghouta in mid-February, killing more than 1,600 civilians and causing an international outcry. The enclave on the eastern edge of Damascus had escaped government control since 2012 and, although it had shrunk over the years, it still covered sizeable territory two months ago.The daily air raids kept residents cowering in basements for weeks and a ground assault soon sliced the area into three isolated pockets, each held by different rebel factions.-Deal dead?-The first two were evacuated under Russian-brokered deals last month that saw more than 46,000 rebels and civilians bused to the northwestern province of Idlib, which the regime does not control.Tens of thousands of people also fled through humanitarian corridors opened by Russia and Syrian troops. Some have already returned to their devastated neighborhoods, while others are staying in crowded shelters. As talks over the third and final pocket of Douma dragged on, Russia and Syria’s regime threatened Jaish al-Islam with a renewed military assault if they did not agree to withdraw. Those still trapped in Douma had been nervous that any attempt to renege on an evacuation would only prompt Russia and regime warplanes to resume deadly strikes. The nature of the ongoing discussions over Douma is unclear and Jaish al-Islam itself has not stated its position since this week’s first evacuation. It remains unclear exactly why the talks between Moscow and Jaish al-Islam have faltered.SANA reported that they fell apart when rebels refused to release detainees they were holding in Douma, and said Friday that “military operations against Jaish al-Islam will not stop until the hostages are released.”Jaish al-Islam had been angling for a reconciliation deal that would allow them to stay in Douma as a police force. The group appears to have little leverage, however, to face the regime’s recovered might, and the latest strikes raised fears of a brutal end to the five-year-old siege of Eastern Ghouta.
