MICAH 4:1,6-13
1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
6  In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;
7  And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever.
8  And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
9  Now why dost thou cry out aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail.
10  Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
11  Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion.
12  But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor.
13  Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.

PSALMS 137:5-6
5  If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.(STROKE)
6  If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet,(disolved from atomic bomb) and their eyes shall consume away in their holes,(disolved from atomic bomb) and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.(disolved from atomic bomb)
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

ZECHARIAH 14:1-4 King James Bible
1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

LUKE 1:31-32
32  He (JESUS) shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:(IN JERUSALEM)
33  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob (ISRAEL ON EARTH) for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.(THATS RULING FOREVER FROM JERUSALEM JESUS DOES ON EARTH-NOT HEAVEN FOR YOU END OF THE WORLDERS)

ISAIAH 9:6-7
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:(JESUS 1ST COMING) and the government shall be upon his shoulder:(JESUS 2ND COMING AS RULING KING FROM JERUSALEM FOREVER AT THE END OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION) and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his (JESUS) government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David,( IN JERUSALEM) and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Kushner: Truth drove Jerusalem embassy opening, Iran deal withdrawal-At opening ceremony for new mission, Trump's son-in-law and adviser slams 'those provoking violence' on Gaza border-By Alexander Fulbright-TOI-MAY 14,18

Speaking at the US Embassy opening in Jerusalem on Monday, Jared Kushner linked US President Donald Trump’s recognition of the city as Israel’s capital to his decision to exit the Iran nuclear deal, saying both were a recognition of “truth.”“Last week, President Trump acknowledged another truth and kept another promise. He announced his intention to exit the dangerous, flawed and one-sided Iran deal,” Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, said to a standing ovation.Trump last week announced his decision to withdraw from the 2015 deal meant to limit Iran’s nuclear program, saying it did not do enough to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon or address Iran’s support for regional militias and terror groups.“Iran’s aggression threatens the many peace-loving citizens throughout the region and the entire world,” said Kushner.Regarding the threat of Iran’s regional activities, he said, “Previously unimaginable opportunities and alliances are emerging,” referring to the unacknowledged ties between Israel and Arab states with which it has no official relations.Turning to the Israel-Palestinian peace process, which he oversees in the White House, Kushner stressed that Trump’s December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital did not reflect a departure “from our strong commitment to lasting peace.”“The United States is prepared to support a peace agreement in every way that we can. We believe it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give so that all people can live in peace, safe from danger, free from fear, and able to pursue their dreams,” he said.Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and decision to move the embassy angered the Palestinian Authority and effectively froze the US administration’s efforts to revive peace talks, with the Palestinians boycotting the White House in response, and declaring that the US could no longer serve as a broker in peace talks. The Palestinians claim East Jerusalem, which Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War, as the capital of their future state.“The United States recognizes the sensitivity surrounding Jerusalem, a city that means so much to so many,” Kushner added, reiterating Trump’s call for the status quo at holy sites in Jerusalem to be respected, namely, at the flashpoint Temple Mount.Kushner also addressed the ongoing riots on the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel in the context of peace prospects.“As we’ve seen from the protests of the last month and even today, those provoking violence are part of the problem and not part of the solution,” he said, without directly naming Hamas. The Hamas-led “March of Return” clashes, which began in March, hit a new peak Monday, with some 50,000 Palestinians taking part in riots along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said dozens were killed and hundreds wounded in the violence, which the army said included gunfire at Israeli troops and attempts to plant explosives on the border fence.

Egypt condemns Israeli deadly force in Gaza; Turkey says US also to blame-UN expresses concern as dozens reported killed on border; Security Council to hold emergency meeting; EU calls for 'restraint'-By Agencies and TOI staff-MAY 14,18

Egypt issued a rare condemnation Monday of Israel’s deadly response to clashes along the border with the Gaza Strip, while Turkey said the United States also bore responsibility for the “massacre” there. The statement by Egyptian Foreign Ministry condemned what it said was “the use of force against peaceful marches.”It also warned of the “negative repercussion of such serious escalation in the Palestinian occupied territories.”The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said more than 40 Palestinians were killed and nearly 1,000 were injured in violent clashes with Israeli forces along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel.Israeli security forces said they were responding to deliberate attempts, spurred by Hamas, to overwhelm and breach the boundary fence to launch terror attacks in Israel. In addition to protesting the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Palestinians were also marking the 70th anniversary of what they call the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” of Israel’s creation in 1948.The Egyptian statement did not mention the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem. It was a rare reprimand from Egypt, a partner to the Israeli-imposed military blockade on the Gaza Strip, whose official purpose is to prevent the Hamas terror group, which rules the Palestinian enclave, from importing weapons. The Israeli army said three of the Palestinians killed on Monday were trying to plant explosives at the border fence. In two separate incidents, IDF troops opened fire on gunmen who were trying to shoot them, Hadashot TV news said. There were also several Israeli airstrikes on Hamas positions in Gaza.According to the army, tens of thousands took part in the protests at several points along the border.Turkey accused the US of sharing responsibility with Israel for the “vile massacre.”“The United States, unfortunately, took its place without complaint alongside the Israeli government in this massacre of civilians and became a party to this crime against humanity,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters in Ankara. “This is a vile massacre and we condemn it strongly,” he added.Yildirim said that the events were “incompatible” with the US acting as a mediator or protector of world peace.Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesman Bekir Bozdag wrote on Twitter that the violence came after “unjust and unlawful decisions,” in reference to Washington moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “The US administration is as responsible as the Israeli government for this massacre,” he said.-UN expresses ‘concern,’ EU calls for ‘restraint’-United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over clashes.“I’m particularly worried about the news coming from Gaza with the high number of people killed,” he said as the UN Security Council prepared to hold an emergency meeting to debate the ongoing violence, either on Monday evening or the following morning.“We condemned what has happened,” the Kuwaiti ambassador to the UN, Mansour al-Otaibi, told journalists. “We will see what the council will do. Today or tomorrow we may ask for an emergency meeting.”The violence came as the new US embassy building opened in Jerusalem with a ceremony attended by Israeli and American dignitaries. US President Donald Trump announced on December 6, 2017, that he was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and would move the embassy to the city from Tel Aviv.Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state and view the Trump administration’s recognition of the city as Israel’s capital as a show of pro-Israel bias.European Union Federica Mogherini issued a statement calling for “restraint” from both sides.“We expect all to act with utmost restraint to avoid further loss of life,” the statement said. “Israel must respect the right to peaceful protest and the principle of proportionality in the use of force. Hamas and those leading the demonstrations in Gaza must ensure that they remain strictly non-violent and must not exploit them for other means.”In a reference to the embassy inauguration, Mogherini said “the ties of the Jewish people to Jerusalem are irrefutable, and must not be denied. And the same is true for the ties of the Palestinian people to the city.”Reaffirming the two-state solution as the best way to resolve the conflict, Moegherini called for a return to the negotiation table “for the sake both of the Israeli and the Palestinian people, and the entire region.”Amnesty International said the high death toll of Palestinians was an “abhorrent violation” of human rights.“We are witnessing an abhorrent violation of international law and human rights in Gaza… This must end immediately,” the London-based human rights group said on Twitter.Alongside the confrontations at the border, the IDF said it carried out a series of airstrikes in Gaza “in response to the violent acts during the afternoon carried out by Hamas along the security fence.”“A short while ago, an IAF fighter jet struck five terrorist targets in a military training facility belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement Monday.“In addition, earlier today, an IAF aircraft and an IDF tank targeted two additional military positions belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip. These strikes were conducted in response to the incident in which IDF forces were fired upon by Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip,” the statement added, saying that 40,000 Palestinians took part in violent riots in 13 locations along the Gaza Strip security fence.Israel said ahead of Monday’s protests that Hamas was planning to breach the Gaza border fence and “massacre” Israelis, and that it would stop a possible border breach at all costs, warning protesters that they were putting their own lives in peril. The protests come as part of the “March of Return” demonstrations along the Gaza security fence. The army’s primary fear was that dozens or hundreds of Palestinians, including Hamas members, would manage to break through the Gaza security fence and wreak havoc in one of the Israeli communities on the other side, attacking residents, starting fires, and destroying buildings. The past seven Fridays have seen thousands of Gazans taking part in the “March of Return” rallies, which Hamas leaders have said are aimed to ultimately erase the border and liberate Palestine.During those violent protests, Palestinians hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at IDF troops, rolled burning tires at the security fence and tried to pull it down with chains. Bombs have been detonated against troops as well. Increasingly, demonstrators have been flying kites laden with containers of burning fuel to start fires in Israel.

52 Palestinians said killed, including terror operatives, in Gaza border riots-Army shoots men planting bomb, strikes Hamas post after gunmen fire at troops; protesters hurl rocks, burn tires ahead of US embassy inauguration; IDF vows to prevent border breach-By TOI staff and Agencies-MAY 14,18

Fifty-two Palestinians were killed Monday in violent clashes with Israeli forces along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel, Palestinians said, in a burst of bloodshed that cast a cloud over Israel’s festive inauguration of the new US Embassy in Jerusalem. It was the deadliest day in Gaza since the devastating cross-border war between the territory’s Hamas rulers and Israel in 2014.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 52 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,2000 were wounded in the violence, amid the biggest riots and rallies in a weeks-long campaign of protests against Israel. The Israeli army said around 50,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border. It said thousands more were gathered at points several hundred meters from the fence. At around 4 p.m., the time that the US was inaugurating its embassy in Jerusalem, military sources said Hamas-spurred groups were trying to breach the border at several spots along the Gaza fence. The army said three of those killed were trying to plant explosives at the border fence. In two separate incidents, IDF troops opened fire on gunmen who were trying to shoot them, Hadashot TV said. The army also said aircraft struck a Hamas post after gunmen there opened fire on troops. There were no injuries among the soldiers. Reports said the IAF also struck five targets in the Jabaliya area. The IDF confirmed it carried out a series of airstrikes in Gaza “in response to the violent acts of the last few hours being carried out by Hamas along the security fence.”“A short while ago, an IAF fighter jet struck five terrorist targets in a military training facility belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement Monday afternoon.“In addition, earlier today, an IAF aircraft and an IDF tank targeted two additional military positions belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip. These strikes were conducted in response to the incident in which IDF forces were fired upon by Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip,” the statement added, saying that 40,000 Palestinians were participating in violent riots in 13 locations along the Gaza Strip security fence.“The IDF operates with determination in order to prevent massive terror activities constantly being led by the Hamas terror organization in. Each act of terror will be met with a harsh response,” the army said.-Hamas said spurring violent clashes-Military sources said Hamas was determined to spark a major new, long-term uprising against Israel, extending to the West Bank.Hadashot TV broadcast a new Hamas video, which featured Hebrew subtitles, in which young Gaza children were shown saying they would be “returning to our homeland.” The TV report said Hamas had been spurring the violent protests, and telling Gazans who die in the violence that they will be guaranteed a place in paradise. It said women were prominent among the protesters. It said Hamas leaders were seeking to grab control of even a small part of Israeli territory, even for a brief moment, in order to claim a symbolic victory and the start of a “return” en route to liberate Palestine.Israeli intelligence officials said earlier Monday that Hamas gunmen were tending to stay away from the border during the protests, ready to burst through into Israel and carry out terror attacks if the fence was breached.Gaza protesters set tires on fire, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air at several spots along the border, while the military said protesters assaulted the border fence and hurled rocks at soldiers.Numerous fires broke out in agricultural fields near Israeli communities, sparked by kites laden with containers of burning fuel flown from Gaza into Israeli territory. Firefighters were called to fight the blazes. But many farmers did not wait for help and worked to put out the conflagrations themselves, tilling the soil around the fires in order to starve out the flames. There were no reports of injuries inside Israel or immediate calculations of how many acres of farmland had been burned.Hadashot news said the Palestinian Authority was encouraging the protests, including by showing the Gaza border clashes on television in a live feed.In the West Bank, several thousand people gathered in the center of Ramallah, while hundreds marched to the Qalandiya crossing on the outskirts of Jerusalem, where protesters threw stones at Israeli troops. The IDF said it was using less-lethal weapons to push back the Gaza demonstrators, as well as live fire in specific cases.A soldier was lightly wounded and was taken to hospital for treatment.Israel said ahead of Monday’s protests that Hamas was planning to breach the Gaza border fence and “massacre” Israelis, and that it would stop a possible border breach at all costs, warning protesters that they were putting their own lives in peril. The protests come as part of the “March of Return” demonstrations along the Gaza security fence. Israel was braced for more than 100,000 Palestinians to take part on Monday, and potentially as many as 200,000. That kind of turnout would indicate a major victory for the Hamas terrorist group, which rules Gaza and has co-opted for its own ends what were originally slated to be weeks of nonviolent protests. The Shin Bet security service on Monday said Hamas, with funding from Iran, was encouraging border violence by civilians, particularly children and teens to serve as cover for potential armed attacks by the group. The agency cited interrogations of captured Hams operatives. The IDF on Sunday said Hamas planned to encourage mass breaches of the border and was aiming to “massacre” Israelis.“On Monday May 14th, the Hamas terrorist organization plans to send armed terrorists, among 250,000 violent rioters to swarm and breach Israel’s border with Gaza and enter Israeli communities,” the IDF warned in an English language video. “Hamas plans to carry out a massacre in Israel. The Israel Defense Forces will not let them.”Protester Mohammed Hamami, 40, said the demonstrations were a “message to Israel and its allies that we will never give up on our land.” Most Gaza residents are descendants of refugees from the Israel’s 1948 Independence War. Israel withdrew all troops and civilians from Gaza in 2005. Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, seized control of the Strip from the Palestinian Authority two years later. Its leaders say the marches and protests are designed to erase the border and “liberate Palestine.”Near Gaza City, hundreds gathered about 150 meters from the fence. An AP reporter witnessed two people being shot in the legs.Bilal Fasayfes, 31, was getting on a free bus to the border with his wife and two children in the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis. “If half the people die we won’t care,” he said. “We will keep going so the other half can live with dignity.”Also in Khan Younis, groups of masked young men, some carrying wooden bats, walked between shops, forcing them to close to respect a general strike.Muataz al-Najjar, 18, who said he was wounded four times in the last seven weeks, once from a bullet and the others from gas canisters, said he hoped to break through the fence. “We will return and the move of the embassy from Tel Aviv will be prevented,” he claimed. At Shifa Hospital, where doctors say they are running low on crucial supplies and being forced to discharge patients early to make space for the next wave, a large tent was established outside in front of the emergency room. At mosques in the cities, large speakers were set up that are expected to broadcast messages encouraging people to go to the border.Israeli military aircraft dropped leaflets over the Gaza Strip early Monday morning warning Palestinians to keep away from the fence separating the coastal enclave from Israel, the IDF said.“IDF jets once again distributed leaflets warning against approaching the security fence, attempting to sabotage it or to carry out terror attacks,” the army’s spokesperson office tweeted. The Arabic leaflets also told residents of the coastal enclave that Hamas was endangering their lives.“Hamas is trying to hide its many failures by endangering your lives,” the leaflets said. “At the same time, Hamas is stealing your money and using it to dig tunnels at your expense.” A few minutes ago, IDF jets once again distributed leaflets warning against approaching the security fence, attempting to sabotage it or to carry out terror attacks pic.twitter.com/dJcBcUYiiz— IDF (@IDFSpokesperson) May 14, 2018-Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned Gazans Monday to keep away from the protests. “I suggest to the residents of Gaza: Do not be blinded by [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar, who sends your children to sacrifice their lives without hope,” he tweeted. “We will protect our citizens by all means necessary and will not allow the fence to be breached.”The army fired at and ignited piles of tires prepared by demonstrators near the border, Hadashot news reported, in order to burn them prematurely and prevent demonstrators from using them later to create a smokescreen. The army’s primary fear during the expected riots is that dozens or hundreds of Palestinians, including Hamas members, will manage to break through the Gaza security fence and wreak havoc in one of the Israeli communities on the other side, attacking residents, starting fires, and destroying buildings. The military believes Hamas will focus its energies on this style of mass, chaotic attack, but the IDF is also preparing for more direct armed combat, including attacks on troops along the border, or kidnappings of IDF soldiers, as has happened along the Gaza border in years past. The IDF has dispatched two additional brigades to take positions along the Gaza border ahead of the anticipated riots. Additional soldiers have also been deployed to provide extra security to Israeli communities near the Gaza border.Protesters on Sunday were heard chanting “Death to America,” according to a video released by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research institute.Gazans Protest Transfer of U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem with Chants of "Death to America" – Scenes from Gaza "Return March" pic.twitter.com/6UlMCMmkJL— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) May 14, 2018-The past seven Fridays have seen thousands of Gazans taking part in the “March of Return” rallies.During these violent protests, Palestinians hurl rocks and Molotov cocktails at IDF troops, roll burning tires at the security fence or try to pull it down with chains. Bombs have been detonated against troops as well. Increasingly, demonstrators have been flying kites laden with containers of burning fuel to start fires in Israel.Military Intelligence does not believe that Hamas is currently interested in war, but expects that the coming days may see significant violence at the Gaza border.According to Israeli military assessments, Hamas is in dire straits, facing the most significant pressure since it seized control of Gaza over a decade ago. The terror organization sees the “March of Return” riots as a way to buy time. The “March of Return” gets its name from the “right of return” demanded by millions of Palestinians to go back to their ancestral villages in today’s Israel, something no Israeli government would accept, as it would effectively mean the end of Israel as a Jewish state.Monday’s deaths brought to nearly 70 the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers firing from across the border fence since mass border protests began in late March. More than 2,000 Gaza residents have been wounded in that time by Israeli fire. Hamas acknowledged that five of its terrorists were among the fatalities after the first Friday demonstration, but has since refrained from acknowledging whether its men are among the dead. Israel has identified other fatalities as members of terrorist groups. Israel says it only opens fire when necessary to stop infiltrations, damage to the fence, and attacks.Initially, the IDF believed that the protests would reach their peak with Nakba Day on Tuesday, but Military Intelligence assessments now indicate that Hamas will seek to piggyback on the event of Monday’s US Embassy move in order to draw international attention to their cause. The Coordinator of the Government Activities in the Territories unit said Sunday that Hamas has recently taken steps to increase the stress on Gaza residents, most recently by barring Gaza fisherman from working beginning on Monday. But more dramatically, during the latest border protests on Friday, the COGAT officer said Hamas members directed rioters to destroy and set fire to key parts of the Kerem Shalom Crossing, the main, often sole, passage for commercial goods and humanitarian aid into and out of the Gaza Strip. Gas lines were trashed and tens of millions of shekels of damage was caused.Judah Ari Gross and Raoul Wootliff contributed to this report.

Israel kicks off US Embassy celebration, boosts border force-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 13, 2018
JERUSALEM — Israel on Sunday kicked off festivities to celebrate the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, even as it bolstered its forces along the Gaza border and in the West Bank in anticipation of mass Palestinian protests of the move.A day before the embassy's formal opening, Israel hosted a gala party at its Foreign Ministry with President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and other American VIPs.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's "bold decision" in upending decades of U.S. policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "It's the right thing to do," a smiling Netanyahu told the jubilant crowd.Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Netanyahu's nationalist government. The move infuriated the Palestinians, who claim Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as their capital.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halted ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks. The rival Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, has been staging a series of weekly demonstrations against a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the territory. Those protests are to climax Monday, with tens of thousands of people expected to gather along the Israeli border in an event timed to coincide with the U.S. Embassy move.Hamas has signalled that large crowds, numbering perhaps in the thousands, might try to break through the border fence to realize the "right of return" to lost homes. Both the embassy move and the protests have symbolic timing. Trump has said the opening is meant to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment. The Palestinian protests also mark the date as the anniversary of their "naqba," or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of people fled or were forced from their homes during the war surrounding the event. About two-thirds of Gaza's 2 million people are descendants of Palestinian refugees.A mass border breach could trigger potentially lethal Israeli force. Forty-two Palestinians have been killed and over 1,800 have been wounded by Israeli fire since the weekly protests began on March 30. The U.N., European Union and rights groups have accused Israel of using excessive force against unarmed protesters.Israel says it is protecting a sovereign border and accuses Hamas of using the unrest to plan and carry out attacks. Marchers have thrown stones and burned tires at the fence and flown flaming kites over it to try to set Israeli fields on fire.On Friday, a Palestinian crowd attacked the main cargo crossing between Israel and Gaza, disrupting shipments of cooking fuel, gasoline and building materials, and causing millions of dollars in damage. Israeli officials said it could take weeks or months to repair the crossing."Unfortunately, the crossing is closed today and will remain closed until the foreseeable future due to severe damage caused by Palestinian rioters," said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman. "It is still unclear how long it will take to fix and replace the necessary parts."The Israeli military announced that it bolstered forces on the Gaza border with combat battalions, special units, intelligence forces and snipers. Israeli warplanes also dropped leaflets in Gaza, urging residents to stay far from the fence."You deserve a better government. You deserve a better future," the leaflets said. "Do not approach the security fence nor participate in the Hamas display that is putting you in risk."A high-ranking delegation of Gaza's Hamas rulers headed Sunday to Egypt, amid diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the mass rally. But one of the Hamas participants, Khalil al-Hayya, said there were no breakthroughs and the march would go on as planned Monday. The army said it was also reinforcing its troops in the West Bank with several combat battalions and intelligence units in case of possible unrest there as well.Sunday's celebrations coincided with Israel's "Jerusalem Day," the 51st anniversary of what it refers to the city's "unification" during the 1967 Mideast war.Israel immediately annexed east Jerusalem — home to the city's most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites — in a move that has not received international recognition. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state. In an annual ritual, tens of thousands of Israelis marched through Jerusalem's Old City to mark the day. Revelers sang, danced and waved Israeli flags.Earlier Sunday, Netanyahu told his Cabinet that there would be a "series of decisions" to build up Jerusalem, including its contested eastern sector. Shortly after, the government approved construction of a $57 million cable car system that will link west Jerusalem to the Old City.Although Trump has said his declaration does not set the final borders of the city, his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital has been perceived by both Israel and the Palestinians as taking Israel's side in the most sensitive issue in their conflict. Only two countries, Guatemala and Paraguay, have said they will follow suit. Most of the world maintains embassies in Tel Aviv, saying the Jerusalem issue must first be resolved. In a reflection of the deep sensitivities, dozens of countries — including Britain, France and Germany — skipped Sunday night's celebration at the Israeli Foreign Ministry.Netanyahu, who frequently clashed with President Barack Obama, has found a welcome partner in Trump. The new administration has lined up solidly behind Netanyahu in his dealings with the Palestinians and delighted him last week when it withdrew from the international nuclear deal with Iran, Obama's top foreign policy achievement.Addressing the crowd Sunday evening, Netanyahu said Israelis would be "eternally grateful" for Trump's decision on Jerusalem."Thank you, President Trump, for your bold decision. Thank you for making the alliance between Israel and the United States stronger than ever," he said.Netanyahu said Trump's decision recognized a 3,000-year Jewish connection to Jerusalem and the "truth" that Jerusalem will be Israel's capital under any future peace deal."It's been the capital of our state for the past 70 years. It will remain our capital for all time," he said.Kushner and Ivanka Trump sat in the front row near Netanyahu during the ceremony but did not speak. Netanyahu called their presence a "national and international statement" that "touches our hearts."U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Trump was fulfilling a key campaign promise by moving the embassy. "The United States has no greater partner than Israel," he said.Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel group in the U.S., expressed concern that the embassy move would backfire. He accused the White House of putting the interests of a small group of hard-liners ahead of the larger interest of promoting peace with the Palestinians."Making a move like this removes the U.S. as a credible mediator," he said. The Palestinian ambassador to Washington sharply condemned the relocation of the U.S. Embassy in a statement Sunday."Tragically, the US administration has chosen to side with Israel's exclusivist claims over a city that has for centuries been sacred to all faiths," said Husam Zomlot.___Associated Press writer Josh Lederman in Washington contributed to this report.Josef Federman, The Associated Press.

A delegation that included U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner has arrived in Israel for the official opening ceremony of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. The White House senior advisers landed on Sunday, along with U.S. Secretary Treasury Steven Mnuchin, for Monday's inauguration. The embassy is being relocated from Tel Aviv to southern Jerusalem's Arnona neighbourhood, fulfilling longtime U.S. plans, but the highly contentious move comes at the start of what will be a busy and potentially turbulent week in Israel.May 14 is the date on which Israel's independence as a country is marked on the Western or Gregorian calendar, versus the Hebrew calendar, which marks the date as April 19.On Tuesday, Palestinians traditionally commemorate the events of 1948 as the "catastrophe" or Nakba, a reference to the war 70 years ago that followed the birth of the modern Jewish state and resulted in thousands being driven from their homes. The embassy move is seen by many Palestinians as an in-your-face affirmation of pro-Israel bias by Trump and a new blow to dreams of statehood."The concern [this week] is that there could be potentially violent clashes in the Gaza Strip, in the West Bank and here in Jerusalem," said CBC's Derek Stoffel."As a result, the Israeli security forces, the army and police, have sent in reinforcements to various parts of the country ... as the protests could very well turn violent."As we've seen in the last seven Fridays, we've seen Palestinian protests, and more than 40 Palestinians have been killed, many shot by Israeli forces as they made their way toward the border fence that separates Gaza from Israel."The U.S. is moving its embassy to a holy city that is at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and claimed by both sides as a capital. The inauguration comes five months after Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Trump will deliver a video address for the opening of the embassy, senior administration officials announced last Friday. Here is a snapshot of the city:Recent history-Jerusalem was partitioned after the Mideast war over Israel's 1948 creation, with Israel controlling the west and Jordan the east, including major shrines of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. In 1967, Israel captured East Jerusalem, along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It expanded the municipal boundaries into the West Bank, increasing the size of East Jerusalem and annexing it to its capital, a move not recognized by most of the international community.Since the 1990s, the fate of the city has been a core issue in U.S.-brokered talks on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel, with the Palestinians seeking East Jerusalem as a capital. Intermittent negotiations have failed, most recently in 2014, and chances of resuming them are slim. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he won't give up any part of the city, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says Trump's policy shift on Jerusalem disqualified the U.S. as a broker.Population-In 2016, Jerusalem was home to almost 883,000 people, 62 per cent of them Jews and non-Arabs and 38 per cent Palestinians. The Arab share of the population has grown steadily since 1967, in part because of a higher birth rate. After 1967, Israel built a ring of settlement neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem to deepen its hold over the annexed area, where 207,000 Jews now live.More than a decade ago, Israel built a West Bank separation barrier that slices through Arab neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents of the city to cross crowded checkpoints to get to downtown areas. Israel says the barrier, which in urban areas is mainly made up of cement walls, is a defence against militants. Palestinians say it's a land grab.U.S. policy-Most of the international community, including the U.S., did not recognize Israel's 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem. The prevailing view, including by the European Union, is that the fate of the city must be determined in negotiations. In 1995, the U.S. Congress passed a bill with bipartisan support that recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and required the U.S. embassy to move there. Until now, U.S. presidents had signed a waiver every six months that put off the move on security grounds. The U.S. stance on East Jerusalem now has been thrown into confusion. In its December announcement, the Trump administration emphasized that recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital does not change its stance that the two sides must work out the city's final status. But Trump quickly appeared to contradict that, declaring, "We took Jerusalem off the table."Embassy's location-In their 1949 armistice agreement, Israel and Jordan drew a "Green Line" of partition through the city. In one area of southeastern Jerusalem, they couldn't agree and created a pentagon-shaped "area between the lines."The new embassy will operate temporarily from the U.S. consulate compound, which is partially located in the old no-man's land and partially in west Jerusalem. The UN considers the area of the pentagon to be occupied territory because neither Israeli nor Jordanian forces were supposed to enter it after 1949, according to a senior UN official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the politically touchy issue with the media. The U.S. State Department, presenting a defence of the location, argues that in practice, part of the no-man's land has been in continuous Israeli use since 1949.

Most foreign envoys absent as Israel, U.S. launch embassy festivities-[Reuters]-By Ori Lewis-YAHOONEWS-May 13, 2018

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel launched celebrations on Sunday for the U.S. Embassy's relocation to Jerusalem, a move whose break with world consensus was underscored by the absence of most envoys to the country from a reception hosted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Monday's slated opening of the new embassy follows from U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition in December of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a decision he said fulfilled decades of policy pledges in Washington and formalized realities on the ground. The Palestinians, who want their own future state with its capital in east Jerusalem, have been outraged by Trump's shift from previous administrations' preference for keeping the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv pending progress in peace efforts. Those talks have been frozen since 2014. Other major powers worry that the U.S. move could now inflame Palestinian unrest in the occupied West Bank and on the Gaza Strip border, where Israel reinforced troops in anticipation of the embassy opening. Most countries say the status of Jerusalem should be determined in a final peace settlement, and say moving their embassies now would prejudge any such deal.Addressing dignitaries at the Foreign Ministry, including U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the president's daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the Israeli prime minister urged others to follow Washington's lead."Move your embassies to Jerusalem because it's the right thing to do," Netanyahu said. "Move your embassies to Jerusalem because it advances peace, and that's because you can't base peace on a foundation of lies."Netanyahu said that "under any peace agreement you could possibly imagine, Jerusalem will remain Israel's capital".Jerusalem, which is sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians, was decorated with roadside flowerbeds in the design of the U.S. flag and posters reading "Trump make Israel great again"."Tragically, the U.S. administration has chosen to side with Israel's exclusivist claims over a city that has for centuries been sacred to all faiths," the general delegation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation to the United States said. The U.S. Embassy move "gives life to a religious conflict instead of a dignified peace," it said in a statement.Israel said all 86 countries with diplomatic missions in Israel were invited to the event, and 33 confirmed attendance. Among those present were delegates from Guatemala and Paraguay, which will open their own Jerusalem embassies later this month.EUROPEAN RIFT-Attending the Foreign Ministry gathering were representatives from Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic, but none from western European Union states - suggesting a rift within the bloc over Trump's Jerusalem move.No-show nations withheld comment on Sunday. The EU mission in Israel tweeted on Friday that the bloc would "respect the international consensus on Jerusalem ... including on the location of their diplomatic representations until the final status of Jerusalem is resolved".Outside Jerusalem's ancient Damascus Gate, Israelis danced in another celebration on Sunday, marking the capture of the Old City from Arab forces in the 1967 Middle East War.Hundreds of Israeli rightists entered Al Aqsa mosque compound, an icon of Palestinian nationalism and a vestige of ancient Jewish temples. Witnesses said some prostrated themselves in Jewish prayer, violating religious restrictions at the site and sparking scuffled with Muslim worshippers.Israeli police said several people were forcibly removed and questioned. The U.S. Treasury secretary called the embassy relocation "a sign of the enduring friendship and partnership between our two countries" and also referred to the U.S. withdrawal last week from the Iran nuclear deal, a move welcomed by Israel and some U.S. Arab allies in the Gulf but lamented by other world powers. The Palestinians plan to demonstrate against Monday's inauguration from Arab districts abutting the Jerusalem site.On the border with Gaza, Palestinians have also held protests as Israel prepares to mark 70 years since its creation, an event Palestinians call the Nakba, or Catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of them were displaced from their homes.More than 40 Palestinians have been killed in the latest violence. The Trump administration has sought to keep the door open to Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy by saying the embassy move did not aim to prejudge Jerusalem's final borders. The U.S. consulate in the city, tasked with handling Palestinian ties, will remain.Washington has not asked Israel to initiate peace moves in exchange for the embassy relocation, U.S. Ambassador David Friedman told reporters on Friday: "There was no give and take with Israel with regard to this decision."(Additional reporting by Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza and Dan Williams in Jerusalem; Editing by Edmund Blair)

Ontario Liberals, NDP say it's too early to talk about forming a coalition-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

TORONTO — At campaign events on Sunday, both Ontario's Liberal premier and the leader of the New Democratic Party refused to commit to the possibility of joining forces to form a coalition government should the Progressive Conservatives win a majority in the upcoming election.Premier Kathleen Wynne told supporters in Toronto's north end that in spite of "a lot of overlap" between the two parties, she would hesitate to team up with the New Democrats because their business taxes would make the province less competitive for trade. But Wynne also said that at just under a month until Ontarians head to the polls, it's too early to make a decision about a potential coalition."We're in Day 5 of the (30-day) campaign," Wynne said. "I'm not going to pre-empt the result of the election."At a campaign event in eastern Toronto, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath maintained that her party could win a majority of seats, but indicated that if things go another way, she would be unwilling to partner with the Liberals."I'm not going to work with any party that wants to roll back corporate taxes, or that wants to make it harder for everyday families," Horwath said. But like Wynne, Horwath also said it's impossible to say anything definitive before the election results have come in."We're going to wait until June 7 before we make any decisions," she said. The two leaders' comments come as the New Democrats are gaining traction in the polls, with some suggesting Horwath will be the top challenger to Doug Ford's poll-leading Tories.Wynne, however, brushed off questions about her party's lagging results."There will be lots of numbers between now and election day," she said, adding that pre-election polls typically reflect "lots of volatility."Both the Liberals and the Tories have been more openly critical of the NDP's platform in recent campaign events, particularly when the three leaders met for the northern debate in Parry Sound on Friday.Ford's team said he will return to the campaign trail on Monday.—with files from Salmaan Farooqui.Maija Kappler, The Canadian Press.

Hawaii Kilauea Volcano Latest: Acid Rain Could Fall After Eruption-[Newsweek]-Nina Godlewski-YAHOONEWS-12-May 2018

The people on Hawaii’s Big Island are evacuating areas where there are high levels of sulfur dioxide leaking out of the lava emitted by the Kilauea Volcano. Lava, dangerous gases and earthquakes are all potential risks on the island, but if the weather changes, another risk will be added to that list—acid rain.“It’s reasonably normal for this volcano,” Mark Elliot a meteorologist for The Weather Channel, told Newsweek. The Kilauea Volcano is known for emitting a lot of sulfur dioxide, he added, though not all volcanoes have the same makeup. The gas can mix with the oxygen and any water vapor in the air, as well as with sunlight, to form sulfuric acid. “It’s an unsafe gas to breathe in too much of,” Elliot said, but luckily it’s a gas humans detect easily; the smell is similar to that of rotting eggs or fireworks. When water vapor turns into rain and passes through that sulfuric acid in the air, the product is acid rain.Trending: Trump Reveals Where He Will Meet North Korea's Kim Jong UnThe volcano erupted days ago and has continued to leak gas into the air, making “sulfuric acid in the downwind areas” likely, Elliot said. The forecast for an area where the gas has been leaking, not far from the volcano, included rain for Wednesday through Thursday evening. Acid rain mainly impacts health, agriculture and the drinking water systems in the area where acid rain falls, Elliot said. Additionally, there are short and long-term effects the rain can have.In the short term, the gases in the air that cause acid rain have the largest impact on asthma sufferers and those in more high-risk groups, like the elderly. “You’re not breathing in as much oxygen as you should be, so it messes with you,” Elliot said.Don't miss: This Netflix Email Scam Will Steal Your Credit Card Details, Cyber Experts Warn-Symptoms can include difficulty breathing and irritation in the throat, lungs or eyes, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. The longer-term effects of the sulfur dioxide are less well-known but are something researchers are trying to study, Hawaii News Now reported. The rain also impacts the health of plants; while some are more sensitive than others, acid rain can do significant damage and even kill some plants. “The plants are affected by it pretty substantially in that it is an acid falling onto the plants, it can mess up the leaves it can get into the root system,” Elliot told Newsweek.Lastly, the rain can contaminate drinking water supplies. The chemicals in acid rain can cause other elements, like lead, to leach from rain catching materials or out of roofs and plumbing. Residents should be careful about their drinking water because they might not know if it’s been contaminated following acid rain. Most popular: Women Candidates Score Another Victory as FEC Rules Campaign Funds Can Be Used for Child Care-As long as the volcano continues to release the gas into the air, there’s a potential for acid rain to fall on the island. Noisy Hawaii volcano lava fissure spurs more evacuations-[Associated Press]-CALEB JONES-YAHOONEWS-13 May 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — A new fissure emitting steam and lava spatter spurred Hawaii officials to call for more evacuations on Sunday as residents braced for an expected eruption from the Kilauea volcano. The Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an alert that an 18th fissure was discovered along a road west of a major highway on the Big Island. Residents on that road were being told to evacuate, and two nearby community centers were serving as shelters for people and pets.Popping, exploding and sloshing sounds could be heard from the fissure as far as 1,500 yards (1,400 meters) away. The fissures, ground deformation and abundant volcanic gases indicate eruptions on the eastern flank of Kilauea are likely to continue. The latest opening came the morning after two other fissures opened on Saturday. Most of the lava outbreaks have occurred in and around the Leilani Estates neighborhood, where molten rock has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the 17th fissure, which opened Saturday night, was spattering but no flow had formed. The 16th fissure had spilled lava into an open field earlier in the day.The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported the fissures opened just east of the Puna Geothermal Venture energy conversion plant, where steam and hot liquid are brought up through underground wells and the steam feeds a turbine generator to produce electricity. Plant workers last week as a precaution removed 50,000 gallons of a flammable gas stored at the site.Geologists warn that Kilauea's summit could have an explosive steam eruption that would hurl rocks and ash miles into the sky.

Dozens rescued from flooding in Grand Forks, B.C.; officials warn of second wave-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

GRAND FORKS, B.C. — Firefighters had rescued more than 30 people by boat in Grand Forks, B.C., sometimes swimming through muddy and debris-laden water, by the time floodwaters had receded Saturday afternoon, officials said.Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Chief Dan Derby said firefighters had support from search and rescue crews and an overhead helicopter to ensure everyone was OK."We've had what we call swimmers in the water going house to house, doing checks to see if people are in the homes," he said. The dynamic situation, which has also involved livestock rescues, isn't one they'll soon forget, he said."The responders on the ground are calling the event 'catastrophic' and the largest event they will respond to in their careers."While river levels have almost returned to pre-flood levels in Grand Forks, officials are warning residents to brace for a second surge, which is expected this week as snow continues to melt at higher elevations.About 1,395 evacuation orders affecting 2,790 individuals remain in place for many parts of Kootenay Boundary and the regional district is reminding the public that sand bags should be kept in place.Premier John Horgan said the province could be facing a "one in a hundred years" flood season, after his latest briefing on the situation and after speaking with Grand Forks Mayor Frank Konrad."The water seems to be receding in Grand Forks, but we're far from done with this. We're going to have a couple of weeks of very, very difficult times along the waterways of British Columbia," Horgan said at the World Rugby Women's Sevens game in Langford, B.C., on Saturday.Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth will tour the area Sunday, Horgan said, and the provincial government will review options for further support Monday morning.Three of the region's rivers — the Granby, Kettle and West Kettle — all broke 1948 water level records by about 60 centimetres, said Chris Marsh, emergency operations centre director for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.Marsh warned against entering the floodwaters, which contain sewage, chemicals and other contaminants.Law enforcement officials also urged residents to stop breaking evacuation orders, because they are not only putting themselves at risk, but also emergency responders. As some residents and business owners have taken the flood break to begin assessing damage to their properties, volunteers continue to prepare sandbags at the city's arena in anticipation of the next wave.About an hour and a half away in Osoyoos, where 50 properties received evacuation orders Friday and Saturday, resident Dianne Mykyte said she took it as a sign that it was time to go when floodwaters had risen to the edge of her pickup truck's door.In a matter of days, her quiet street — which she described as being built on a sandbar, with water on either side — had been transformed into something unrecognizable."My neighbour, he went for a wading walk with his cellphone and he said he saw some cat fish swimming," Mykyte said. "There are big cat fish around there, we do see them in the lake quite often. So I guess they've migrated."On Saturday, one woman left her backyard via paddleboard, while a man fished for carp out of the back of his pickup truck. A sinkhole also appeared next to another neighbour's home.In areas where damage is minimal, including the area between West Boundary and Christina Lake, officials are working to get some residents back in their homes.Damage and safety assessments are underway and unaffected areas will have evacuation orders rescinded as soon as it is safe to do so, the regional district said.It said they are prioritizing re-entry for homeowners whose properties have been unaffected by the floodwaters. While electricity has been restored, Fortis B.C. personnel are surveying large areas that are still without gas.About 4,000 people across the province have been evacuated from their homes so far this season.Amy Smart, The Canadian Press.

Roads reopen, clean-up continues as floodwaters steadily drop-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018
Water levels continue to drop and most areas could be below flood stage as early as Monday, according to New Brunswick's latest Riverwatch forecast. As floodwaters recede, more roads across the province are beginning to reopen. The City of Saint John reopened Westfield Road to traffic yesterday after it passed inspection. It closed after floodwaters took over the road.Almost half of the roads within city limits that were closed during flooding have now reopened, according to the city's Emergency Management Organization (EMO).In Fredericton, the road network has more or less returned to normal, spokesperson Wayne Knorr said Saturday. Saturday also marked the official end of the city's recommended evacuation for most homes, except for homes that are still surrounded by water in the areas of Tippet Drive, Farry Cove Road, Lawrence Long and Road by Road 7.Fredericton marathon goes ahead-In Fredericton, the annual marathon took place Sunday as planned but with a different route. While the race was supposed to close down Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets, the City of Fredericton asked race organizers to change course."The community has been under some stress and many roads have been closed for the better part of two weeks," said race director Paul Lavoie in a release on Fredericton Marathon's website."Closing the Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets would have created some additional difficulties this weekend," he said.Instead, the Boston Qualifying (BQ) certified route for the main events on Sunday consisted of the "out and back" route along a trail system to Penniac from Queen's Square Park, where the start and finish line is located.Latest water levels-By early Sunday morning, water levels were roughly 5.7 metres along the St. John River near Fredericton, down from six metres at the same time yesterday. The levels are about a metre below flood stage, according to real-time data provided by the federal government. In Maugerville, water levels were at 5.3 metres, almost a metre below flood stage for that part of the river. In the Saint John area, levels were at about 4.2 metres Sunday morning, hovering just at flood stage.According to the Riverwatch forecast, water levels for most areas of the province should drop below flood stage by early next week. The forecast says water levels should be at 5.2 metres in the Fredericton area by Tuesday, while levels should be at 3.9 metres in the Saint John region by Wednesday. In Sheffield-Lakeville Corner and Jemseg, water levels could still be above flood stage next week, although only Jemseg is expected to have water levels above flood stage for the rest of the week.Volunteers lend a hand-Saint John's EMO organized a "volunteer blitz" this weekend  to help homeowners affected by flooding. On Saturday, 64 volunteers helped 17 homeowners in flood-affected areas, while about 48 people showed up to help on Sunday.Volunteers were assigned to teams and shuttled to various flood-impacted areas across the city.Samaritan's Purse Canada, a disaster relief organization, is also in New Brunswick helping out with with cleanup. Those interested in volunteering their time to flood relief can contact them at 1-844-547-2663.In addition, New Brunswick EMO has launched a website with information for property owners on cleanup, safety and details on volunteering. The website also has information on registering for assistance. Information Morning hosting special show on flood cleanup-On CBC radio Monday morning, there will be a province-wide phone-in show that will replace regular Information Morning shows across N.B.Host Terry Seguin will be joined by a panel of experts to take questions on flood cleanup. From 6 a.m. to 8:37 a.m., listeners from throughout the province can call in to ask about health and safety, home repairs and insurance. The number to call is 1-800-590-8181.The show will also be livestreamed at cbc.ca/nb and on Facebook Live from 7:10 to 8 a.m.

Family of IS-inspired suicide bombers attack Indonesian churches, at least 13 dead-[Reuters]-By Kanupriya Kapoor-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

SURABAYA, Indonesia (Reuters) - A family of six launched suicide attacks on Christians attending Sunday services at three churches in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya, killing at least 13 people and wounding 40, officials said.Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, has seen a recent resurgence in homegrown militancy and police said the family who carried out Sunday's attacks were among 500 Islamic State sympathizers who had returned from Syria."The husband drove the car, an Avanza, that contained explosives and rammed it into the gate in front of that church," East Java police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera told reporters at the regional police headquarters in Surabaya. The wife and two daughters were involved in an attack on a second church and at the third church "two other children rode the motorbike and had the bomb across their laps", Mangera said. The two daughters were aged 12 and 9 while the other two, thought to be the man's sons, were 18 and 16, police said.Police blamed the bombings on the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).JAD is an umbrella organization on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is estimated to have drawn hundreds of Islamic State sympathizers in Indonesia.Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, in a message carried on its Amaq news agency."This act is barbaric and beyond the limits of humanity, causing victims among members of society, the police and even innocent children," President Joko Widodo said during a visit to the scene of the attacks.Indonesian terrorism analyst Rakyan Adibrata said it was the first time children had been involved in attacks in the country.East Java police spokesman Mangera said at least 13 people had been killed and 40 had been taken to hospital, including two police officers. He called on people to remain calm.Streets around the bombed churches were blocked by checkpoints and heavily armed police stood guard as forensic and bomb squad officers combed the area for clues.Television footage showed one church where the yard in front was engulfed in fire with thick, black smoke billowing up. A large blast was heard hours after the attacks, which Mangera said was a bomb disposal squad dealing with a device.JAIL STANDOFF-The attacks are the deadliest in Indonesia linked to Islamic State and the worst since October 2005, when three suicide bombers blew themselves up in Bali restaurants killing 20.They came days after militant Islamist prisoners killed five members of an elite counter-terrorism force during a 36-hour standoff at a high-security jail near Jakarta.Police Chief Tito Karnavian told reporters that because many militant leaders had been captured "these groups are starting to ... retaliate."Wawan Purwanto, communication director at Indonesia's intelligence agency, said the main target of militants remained the security forces, but "there are alternative (targets) if the main targets are blocked".At St Mary's catholic church, the first place of worship to be attacked, the bombing happened after an earlier mass was over and when the church was getting ready to hold another service.Separately, an internal police report reviewed by Reuters said a suspected bomb exploded in a car in the parking lot of a Pentacostal church, setting alight dozens of motorbikes. In the third location, the Indonesian Christian Church, veiled women entered the church's yard where they were stopped by a security guard before an explosion occurred at the same spot, according to the police report.POPE OFFERS PRAYERS-Jeirry Sumampow, a spokesman for Indonesia's church association (PGI), called on the government for more help for security at churches.Pope Francis offered his prayers for the victims."I am particularly close to the dear people of Indonesia, especially to the communities of Christians of the city of Surabaya, which were hit hard by the serious attack on places of worship," he said during his Sunday prayer in Rome."Together we invoke the God of peace (asking him) to cease these violent actions and (to make sure) that in the heart of all there could be a space not feelings of hatred and violence, but of reconciliation and fraternity."Nearly 90 percent of Indonesians are Muslim, but the country is also home to sizeable communities of Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and people who adhere to traditional beliefs.Indonesia has had some major successes tackling militancy inspired by al Qaeda's attacks on the United States in 2001. But there has been a resurgence of Islamist attacks in recent years, including in January 2016 when four suicide bombers and gunmen attacked a shopping area in central Jakarta.Churches have also been targeted previously, including near-simultaneous attacks over Christmas in 2000 that killed about 20 people.(Additional reporting by Fransiska Nangoy, Agustinus Beo Da Costa, Gayatri Suroyo, Francesca Landini and Sami Aboudi; Writing by Ed Davies; Editing by Simon Cameron-Moore and Lincoln Feast.)

Police: Members of a family bombed 3 Indonesian churches-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

SURABAYA, Indonesia — Co-ordinated suicide bombings carried out by members of the same family struck three churches in Indonesia's second-largest city Sunday, police said, as the world's most populous Muslim nation recoiled in horror at one of its worst attacks since the 2002 Bali bombings. At least seven people died at the churches in Surabaya along with the six family members, the youngest of whom were girls aged 9 and 12, according to police. Another 41 people were injured.Indonesia's president condemned the attacks as "barbaric."National police chief Tito Karnavian said that the father detonated a car bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a motorcycle for their attack, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives.Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently the Islamic State group controlled significant territory.IS claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. It didn't mention anything about families or children taking part and said there were only three attackers.Indonesia's deadliest terrorist attack occurred in 2002, when bombs exploded on the tourist island of Bali, killing 202 people in one night, mostly foreigners. But the fact that children were involved in Sunday's attacks in Surabaya shocked and angered the country.Jemaah Islamiyah, the network responsible for the Bali attacks, was obliterated by a sustained crackdown on militants by Indonesia's counterterrorism police with U.S. and Australian support. A new threat has emerged in recent years, inspired by IS attacks abroad.Experts on militant networks have warned for several years that the estimated 1,100 Indonesians who travelled to Syria to join IS posed a threat if they returned home.Karnavian identified the father as Dita Futrianto and said he was head of the Surabaya cell of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, an Indonesian militant network affiliated with IS that has been implicated in attacks in Indonesia in the past year. He identified the mother as Puji Kuswati. The attacks occurred within minutes of each other, according to Surabaya police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera.Karnavian said Futrianto drove a bomb-laden car into the city's Pentecostal church.Kuswati, with her two daughters, attacked the Christian Church of Diponegoro, he said. Based on their remains, Karnavian said the mother and daughters were all wearing explosives around their waists. The sons rode a motorcycle onto the grounds of the Santa Maria Church and detonated their explosives there.A witness said the woman arrived at the Diponegoro church carrying two bags."At first officers blocked them in front of the churchyard, but the woman ignored them and forced her way inside. Suddenly, she hugged a civilian, then (the bomb) exploded," said the witness, a security guard who identified himself as Antonius. At Santa Maria, a Catholic church, shattered glass and chunks of concrete littered the entrance, which was sealed off by armed police. Rescuers treated victims in a nearby field while officers inspected wrecked and burned motorcycles in the parking lot.A street merchant outside the church said she was thrown several meters (yards) by the blast."I saw two men riding a motorbike force their way into the churchyard. One was wearing black pants and one with a backpack," said the merchant, Samsia, who uses a single name. "Soon after that, the explosion happened."President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited the sites and described the attacks as "cowardly actions" that were "very barbaric and beyond the limit of humanity."In Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, the Indonesian Church Association added its condemnation."We are angry," said Gormar Gultom, an official with the association, but he urged people to let the police investigation take its course.Indonesia's two largest Muslim organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, also condemned the attacks.Mangera, the Surabaya police spokesman, said police responded about 9 p.m. to an explosion in a residential building in Sidoarjo, a district bordering Surabaya. He confirmed TV reports that three people, including a child, were inside the fifth-floor flat at the time of the blast. A bomb squad was checking the building, he said, and hundreds of people were evacuated from the neighbourhood .Separately, national police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said police fatally shot four suspected militants and arrested two others early Sunday in West Java towns. It wasn't clear whether the shootings were connected to the church attacks."They have trained in order to attack police," Wasisto said, identifying the militants as members of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah.Jakarta police placed the capital and surrounding areas on high alert, while the transportation ministry warned airports to be on guard. The church attacks came days after police ended a hostage-taking by imprisoned Islamic militants at a detention centre near Jakarta in which six officers and three inmates died. IS claimed responsibility.Despite Indonesia's crackdown on militants since the Bali bombings, the country has faced a new threat in recent years as the rise of IS in the Middle East invigorated local networks.Christians, many of whom are from the ethnic Chinese minority, make up about 9 per cent of Indonesia's 260 million people.___Associated Press writers Niniek Karmini and Ali Kotarumalos in Jakarta, Indonesia and Stephen Wright in Bangkok contributed.Tuji Martuji, The Associated Press.

Iran court sentences eight men to death over Islamic State attack-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 13, 2018

DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iranian court on Sunday sentenced eight men to death over attacks that killed 18 people at the parliament and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's mausoleum last year, in the first deadly operation by Islamic State in the country. The sentence, issued by a Revolutionary Court after a seven-session hearing, can be appealed in Iran's Supreme Court, Musa Ghazanfarabadi, head of Tehran's Revolutionary Court, told state television.Ghazanfarabadi said courts will hear claims later filed by families of the victims against the United States and Saudi Arabia, which mainly Shi'ite Muslim Iran accuses of supporting Sunni Muslim militant group Islamic State. Both countries deny that accusation.Islamic State claimed responsibility for the unprecedented attacks in Iran, in which suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the parliament and Khomeini's mausoleum in Tehran.Eighteen other suspects still face charges over the attacks, according to state media.Iran has said that the five gunmen and suicide bombers who were killed had fought in Syria and Iraq, where Islamic State once held swathes of territory but is now in decline.(Reporting by Dubai newsroom; Editing by Catherine Evans)

North Korea details plans to dismantle nuclear bomb test site-[Reuters]-By Christine Kim and David Brunnstrom-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea has scheduled the dismantlement of its nuclear bomb test site for sometime between May 23 and 25 in order to uphold its pledge to discontinue nuclear tests, the country's state media reported on Saturday a month ahead of a historic summit. The official Korean Central New Agency said dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test ground would involve collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts."The Nuclear Weapon Institute and other concerned institutions are taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground ... in order to ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test," KCNA said.U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will hold talks in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that North Korea can look forward to "a future brimming with peace and prosperity" if it agrees to quickly give up its nuclear weapons.Trump welcomed the North Korean announcement."North Korea has announced that they will dismantle Nuclear Test Site this month, ahead of the big Summit Meeting on June 12th," he tweeted. "Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture! Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!"South Korea's presidential office echoed the sentiment on Sunday, saying it shows Pyongyang's willingness to denuclearize through actions beyond words. However, in spite of its pledge to stop testing, North Korea has given no indication it is willing to go beyond statements of broad conceptual support for denuclearization by unilaterally abandoning a nuclear weapons program its ruling family has seen as crucial to its survival. In announcing the plan to shut Punggye-ri last month, Kim said North Korea no longer needed to conduct tests because it had completed its goal of developing nuclear weapons.KCNA said journalists, including from the United States and South Korea, would be invited to cover the event, to "show in a transparent manner the dismantlement of the northern nuclear test ground to be carried out". The exact date of the closure will depend on weather conditions, the agency said.To accommodate the traveling journalists, North Korea said various measures would be taken including "opening territorial air space".NO MENTION OF EXPERTS-South Korean officials said in April that North Korea also planned to invite experts from the United States and South Korea for the Punggye-ri shutdown, but KCNA made no mention of this.Last month, South Korean President Moon Jae-in had asked the United Nations to help verify the shutdown.South Korea's deputy nuclear envoy Jeong Yeon-doo will visit the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna this week to discuss the "complete denuclearization of North Korea" the foreign ministry said on Sunday. All of North Korea's six known nuclear bomb tests have taken place at Punggye-ri, in the northeastern of North Korea where a system of tunnels have been dug under Mount Mantap.According to Chinese academic reports, North Korea's most recent nuclear test in September of what Pyongyang said was a hydrogen bomb, was so large it triggered a collapse inside the mountain, rendering the entire site unusable for future tests. But U.S. intelligence officials have said it remains usable and could be reactivated "in a relatively short period of time" if it was closed.Jeffrey Lewis, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at California's Middlebury Institute of International Studies, said in a blog post this week that recent satellite images had shown the removal of some buildings from the site.On Saturday, he told Reuters that closure of Punggye-ri did not mean much in terms of disarmament, given that the United States, for example, stopped nuclear testing in 1992."It would, however, require North Korea to clear out the test tunnels and rebuild any infrastructure that might be removed — or dig new tunnels at the site or elsewhere. So, it’s a good confidence building measure, but not necessarily a sign of irreversible disarmament."Siegfried Hecker, a former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States and a leading expert on North Korea's nuclear program, said collapsing the Punggye-ri tunnels would be "a big and positive step," given his belief that North Korea still required more nuclear and missile tests to reach the U.S. mainland with a nuclear-tipped missile. However, he said the other crucial steps North Korea needed to take to demilitarize its nuclear program were to shut its plutonium production reactor, and open its uranium processing to inspection.(Reporting by Christine Kim and David Brunnstrom; Additional reporting by Lucia Mutikani in WASHINGTON and Joori Roh in SEOUL; Editing by Alistair Bell & Simon Cameron-Moore)

Rouhani says Iran may remain part of nuclear accord-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 14, 2018

DUBAI (Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that Iran would remain committed to the 2015 nuclear deal if its interests were protected, while his foreign minister hoped the pact could be redesigned without Washington as a member. The U.S. withdrawal from the accord on Tuesday was a "violation of morals", Rouhani said in remarks carried by state television."If the remaining five countries continue to abide by the agreement, Iran will remain in the deal despite the will of America," he said.President Donald Trump's pullout has upset European allies, cast uncertainty over global oil supplies and raised the risk of conflict in the Middle East.It has also highlighted divisions among Iran's political elite.Rouhani made similarly conciliatory comments on Tuesday, and on Saturday, foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif began a tour of other signatory nations in an attempt to save the deal.Zarif said in Beijing on Sunday: "We hope that with this visit to China and other countries we will be able to construct a clear future design for the comprehensive agreement."China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Zarif's tour would improve understanding of Iran's position and help Tehran protect its legitimate interests."China is willing to maintain communication and coordination with all relevant parties, including Iran, and take an objective, fair and responsible attitude to continue to safeguard the ...agreement," Wang said.Rouhani has said Iran will stay committed to the deal, which China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany also signed, provided those powers ensured Iran was protected from sanctions. The three European states have recommitted to the agreement, but senior cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said on Friday that Europe was not to be trusted. On Sunday, the head of the Assembly of Experts, a group of clerics responsible for choosing Iran's supreme leader, said Rouhani should apologise for not having obtained guarantees from world powers for the agreement."It is necessary for the president to honestly and openly apologise to the people over the damages caused by the nuclear accord," Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, a top conservative, said in a statement carried by state media. The head of the elite Revolutionary Guards also warned against relying on foreign powers."America's exit aims to break the Iranian people's resistance, which is not new ... but today's problem is not U.S. sanctions, it's that some officials look towards outside rather than looking at domestic potentials," Guards commander General Mohammad Ali Jafari said, the state news agency IRNA reported. On Wednesday, Jafari cast doubt on European nations' ability to save the accord. With the deal opposed by hardliners at home, some analysts say the pragmatic Rouhani may now be a lame duck leader.U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was hopeful that the United States and Europe could agree on how to deal with Iran, after Trump threatened to sanction European companies that continue doing business there.Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Pompeo said the United States was not aiming at Europe when it withdrew from the deal."I'm hopeful in the days and weeks ahead we can come up with a deal that really works, that really protects the world from Iranian bad behaviour, not just their nuclear programme, but their missiles and their malign behaviour as well," he said-White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said sanctions could be imposed on European companies. It's possible. It depends on the conduct of other governments," Bolton said on CNN's "State of the Union."(Reporting by Dubai newsroom; additional reporting by Michael Marina and Christian Shepherd in Beijing; editing by John Stonestreet and Giles Elgood)
