Paraguay becomes third country to open embassy in Jerusalem-'We have no better friends than you,' Netanyahu tells President Cartes; Palestinians slam 'provocative and irresponsible measure'-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-MAY 22,18

Paraguay opened its new embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailing the country as a “true friend” of Israel, making it the third country to do so after the United States and Guatemala opened their embassies in the city last week.In a ceremony in the capital’s Malha Technological Park, the prime minister and Paraguay’s President Horacio Cartes together unveiled the new mission’s plaque, making the move official.“A great day for Israel; a great day for Paraguay — a great day for our friendship,” Netanyahu said.“You have done much for your country. Now you’re doing something for both our countries,” Netanyahu told Cartes.Netanyahu recalled that Paraguay helped Jews escape Nazi Germany and supported the creation of the State of Israel.“Paraguay, before but especially under your leadership, took a very bold stance in international affairs and refused to cooperate with the lies directed against Israel,” Netanyahu told Cartes. “We always remember that. Thank you Horacio. Thank you, and thank you Paraguay.”Netanyahu said cooperation between the two countries would become “greater,” naming areas such as agriculture, security and technology.“We remember our friends. We have no better friends than you. Thank you, Horacio. Thank you, Paraguay,” Netanyahu concluded his brief remarks. The Paraguayan leader called it a “historic event,” adding, that this occasion “is of special significance because it expresses the sincere friendship and brave solidarity between Paraguay and Israel.”Said Cartes: “From the depth of my heart, I appreciate this country that courageously defends its right to live in peace and it is building a praiseworthy economically prosperous state that ensures its future and that of its children.”Until 2012, Paraguay’s embassy was located in the Jerusalem suburb of Mevasseret Zion, until it was closed after Israel shut its mission in Asuncion due to what the Foreign Ministry at the time called “budgetary constraints.”In July 2013, president-elect Cartes announced the country would reopen its embassy in Israel, this time in Tel Aviv. Israel’s embassy in Asuncion reopened less than two years ago.Following Monday’s embassy inauguration in Jerusalem, which was a much more modest affair than last week’s dedication of the new US embassy in the capital’s Arnona neighborhood, Cartes was set to attend a reception at the Foreign Ministry along with Netanyahu.Earlier on Monday, Cartes met President Reuven Rivlin.Last month, Cartes said he wanted to relocate the country’s embassy to Jerusalem before the end of his presidential term in August. The decision has been controversial in Paraguay. It comes less than two months before Mario Abdo Benitez replaces Cartes, and the new president-elect has said he wasn’t consulted.Israel claims the entire city as its eternal capital. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as their future capital and have been infuriated by the embassy moves, though each has been in the western part of the city. Most countries maintain embassies in Tel Aviv and have balked at moving them until the international legal status of the city has been resolved in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. On Sunday, Senior Palestine Liberation Organization official Hanan Ashrawi issued a statement condemning Paraguay for the move.“By adopting such a provocative and irresponsible measure that is in direct contravention of international law and consensus, Paraguay has conspired with Israel, the United States and Guatemala to entrench the military occupation and to seal the fate of occupied Jerusalem,” her statement read. She called on all law-abiding countries to “to sever relations with the countries that support Israel’s unilateral annexation of occupied Jerusalem.”In addition to the US, Guatemala and Paraguay, a number of other countries have expressed interest in moving their embassies to Israel, among them Honduras, the Czech Republic and Romania.US President Donald Trump bucked longstanding international consensus on December 6 with a public declaration that he recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, at which time he also announced he would move the embassy to the city.In a video message shown at last week’s embassy inauguration, Trump said his recognition was of the “plain reality that Israel’s capital is Jerusalem,” noting that the city houses Israel’s main governmental facilities, Supreme Court, Prime Minister’s Office and president’s home.He also stressed that the US remains committed to facilitating an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal and called for Israel to preserve the status quo at religious sites in Jerusalem.AP and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Defense minister: Top Arab MK a ‘fifth column,’ should be ‘outlawed’-Avigdor Liberman steps up attack against Joint List chair Ayman Odeh after Haifa protests against IDF action at Gaza border spur allegations of police brutality-By TOI staff and Stuart Winer-MAY 22,18

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Monday accused the leader of the Joint (Arab) List MK, Ayman Odeh, and his associates of being a “fifth column” and said they should be “outlawed” for their support of a Gaza solidarity protest in Haifa.Opposition lawmakers, meanwhile, were calling for an investigation into the allegations of police violence against the demonstrators over the weekend and defended their right to protest against the military.Referring to the pro-Gaza demonstrations in the northern city over the weekend, Liberman said the protesters sided with the Hamas terrorist group over the Israel Defense Forces.“This is a fifth column for all intents and purposes,” said Liberman at his Yisrael Beytenu party’s faction meeting, singling out Odeh and other members of his party.Liberman lamented the “systematic failure” of law enforcement to take action against Odeh “and his friends” and called for them to be “outlawed.”Friday’s protest in Haifa had been called to demonstrate against the deaths of dozens of Palestinians during clashes with troops at the Gaza border last week.Since March 30, tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in weekly “March of Return” protests, which Israel says are orchestrated by the ruling Hamas terror group in Gaza and used as cover for attempted attacks and breaches of the border fence. The deaths of over 60 Palestinians during last week’s violent protests were met with international outrage and calls for an independent investigation of events. Hamas has subsequently admitted that 50 of the dead were members of the terror group. Three others were Islamic Jihad members. The defense minister on Sunday had called Odeh and his colleagues “terrorists” who belong in jail.“The place for these terrorists is not in the Knesset, it’s in prison,” Liberman said. “It’s time they pay a price for their actions.”Odeh on Saturday confronted police at the hospital where activist Jafar Farah was being treated for a broken knee he sustained after his arrest Friday night at the Haifa demonstration. Odeh called one of the officers stationed outside the Bnai Zion Medical Center a “loser.”Farah said he sustained the injury when he was assaulted by a cop while already in police custody. Footage of his arrest the day prior shows Farah being led away in handcuffs and walking on his own.The Justice Ministry said Sunday it would open an investigation into allegations of police brutality during the protest. On Monday, opposition leader Isaac Herzog defended the protesters’ right to demonstrate against the Israeli military response in Gaza.“The anger of those who didn’t like the demonstration held in Haifa is legitimate, but it can’t overcome the basic Israeli democratic right to express opinions and freely demonstrate,” he said at the start of the weekly Zionist Union faction meeting.Herzog, in a post to his Twitter feed Monday, also rejected Odeh’s “rude comment against a policeman,” but said the allegations of police brutality should be duly investigated.“On the other side of the equation, it is permitted to also ask questions and certainly to demand clarification of the facts when there is a feeling that something not right happened over the weekend in the detention room in Haifa.”Zionist Union MK Tzipi Livni on Monday blasted Liberman for calling Arab lawmakers “terrorists” and accused the defense minister of hate-mongering for political gain.Liberman, said Livni, “doesn’t have authority to make some Israeli citizens into enemies for that sake of a handful of [parliamentary] seats. Together with the prime minister, you have both done enough political laps on that hatred.”Livni was referring to Liberman’s history of provocative comments about the Israeli Arab community and, apparently, to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments on the day of Israel’s 2015 national elections when he urged his supporters to cast their ballots because the “Arabs are voting in droves [for opposing parties].”Early on Monday morning, a judge ordered that all 19 suspects arrested during protests in Haifa over the weekend be released, as the city simmered over the brutality allegations.Haifa Magistrate’s Court Judge Amir Salameh ordered that 12 of the 19 detainees be released immediately, while the other seven, suspected of assaulting a police officer, would be let go later in the day.

Senior officials from around world in Israel for air force’s largest-ever confab-Representatives from 20 countries to discuss importance of air superiority, security challenges facing Israel in three-day conference-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-MAY 22,18

Dozens of senior officers from militaries around the world arrived in Israel this week for a three-day conference organized by the Israeli Air Force, the largest such event held in Israel in at least 20 years, according to a senior IAF official. The focus of the confab is “air superiority as a bridge to regional stability,” the air force officer told reporters on Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity.Over 20 countries were sending representatives, either the heads of their air forces or a deputy, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, India, Vietnam, Poland, Romania, Canada, Finland, Brazil, Holland, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Belgium and Austria. The air force refused to provide a full list of attendees, likely as a courtesy to countries that preferred not to flaunt their military ties to Israel, notably Arab and Muslim-majority nations. The foreign officials were due to arrive in Israel by Monday.“All of these countries that are coming have a different type of relationship with the [Israeli] Air Force,” the army wrote on its website. The air force officers were scheduled to hear speeches by a variety of Israeli and foreign officials in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya on Tuesday, including IAF chief Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin. The next day the visiting air officers will be flown around the country by IAF pilots.“We’ll show them directly the unique size of the State of Israel and the challenges of dealing with defending the nation’s skies, within a very congested airspace,” Norkin said in a statement on Monday. “That’s how we’ll show them the operational dilemmas we deal with on a day-to-day basis.”The conference’s main topic — aerial superiority — is one of particular importance, given the heightened tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria, as well as regional conflicts in general, the senior IAF officer said.“The strategic timing of this conference makes for a very interesting opportunity for these air chiefs to see firsthand the regional dynamic that’s going on,” he said. The conference comes less than two weeks after Israeli jets bombarded dozens of Iranian targets in Syria and Syrian air defenses, in response to a large but unsuccessful rocket attack by Iranian forces against Israeli military bases on the Golan Heights. The senior air force officer also noted that it coincides with ongoing, bitter fighting between Egyptian forces and an Islamic State affiliate in the Sinai Peninsula.According to the officer, the prominence and power of the Israeli Air Force and its close ties with foreign militaries are “a source of stability” in the Middle East, helping prevent tense situations from spinning out of control.Israel has long viewed its air superiority as a central tenet of its national security policy. The conference has two main goals, the senior air officer said. The main and most obvious one is to discuss the topic of air superiority with Israeli allies. The second — but perhaps more important — purpose is to strengthen the air force’s and Israel’s relationships with the participating nations.“We’re going to emphasize our technology and values. We see this conference as a platform to build and strengthen our partnerships internationally,” the officer said.“It is our goal to connect these important partners to the State of Israel, to the IDF and to the air force. We see this as a national-level event, even though it’s an air force-level event,” he said.Israel has long relied on the military, especially the air force, to serve as an ambassador of sorts to countries that would rather keep their relationships with the Jewish state under the radar. The air force often refers to this as “aerial diplomacy.”Under the banner of military drills, Israeli pilots are able to do what Israeli politicians cannot. The IAF, for instance, has participated in air exercises with the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, two countries that do not formally recognize the State of Israel. On Tuesday, in addition to IAF chief Norkin, the conference-goers were set to hear from former senior defense official Amos Gilad, a central voice in Israel’s strategic planning; Danny Shapira, one of the founders of the IAF; Marillyn Hewson, CEO of Lockheed Martin; Yossi Leshem, a renowned Israeli ornithologist who has worked closely with the IAF; US Air Force Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of the US Air Force in Europe; Australian Maj. Gen. Simon Stuart, head of the peacekeeping force in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula; and a number of IAF veterans who now work in Israeli start-ups.The CEO of Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the F-35 fighter jet, is expected to speak about the importance of stealth technology in air superiority, the IAF officer said.Following the speeches in Herzliya, the conference attendees will travel to the army’s Tel Aviv headquarters, known as the Kirya, to meet IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and receive a briefing from him on Israel’s security situation on top of the Kirya’ main building. They will also travel across the street to the basement under the now-swanky Sarona Market where the Israeli Air Force was founded in 1948.For Wednesday, they were invited to visit the Tel Nof air base in central Israel, where they will meet young IAF pilots and have a chance to fly inside Israeli planes and see the Jewish state from above. They will also meet briefly with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Thursday, the IAF planned to take the foreign airmen to Jerusalem to learn more about the air force’s “heritage” and meet with President Reuven Rivlin, the IAF officer said. The three-day event, held in honor of the 70th anniversary of the air force’s founding, will be the largest of its kind in at least 20 years.“The IAF, for its 50th anniversary, did something similar, but it wasn’t at this scale and it wasn’t with this agenda,” the senior IAF officer said.“We’ve been working on this for a year,” he added.Last year, the Israeli Air Force hosted its largest ever exercise, known as Blue Flag, in which seven other militaries took part.In the November 2017 exercise, Israeli pilots flew alongside counterparts from India, the United States, Greece, Poland, France, Italy and Germany, taking part in mock aerial battles over southern Israel. Some 1,200 people — including commanders and technical personnel — took part in the exercise based in the Israeli Air Force’s Ovda base north of Eilat.

Trump to DOJ: Investigate whether FBI infiltrated campaign-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 22, 2018

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said he will "demand" that the Justice Department investigate whether the FBI infiltrated his presidential campaign, an extraordinary order that came hours before his legal team said the special counsel indicated the investigation into the president could be concluded by September.Trump tweeted Sunday: "I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!"Trump's demand puts further pressure on the Justice Department, which later Sunday asked its inspector general to expand an existing investigation into the Russia probe by examining whether there was any improper politically motivated surveillance. It comes as the White House tries to combat the threat posed by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russia and the Trump campaign. The president's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said Mueller recently shared a timetable that suggested his probe could end by Sept. 1 if Trump were to sit for an interview in July, which is the legal team's new working plan."We said to them, 'If we're going to be interviewed in July, how much time until the report gets issued?'" Giuliani told The Associated Press on Sunday, referring to the report Mueller is expected to issue to Congress at the conclusion of his investigation. "They said September, which is good for everyone, because no one wants this to drag into the midterms."Giuliani said he did not want a repeat of what happened in 2016, when FBI Director James Comey announced in the campaign's final days that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, a decision Democrats believe cost Clinton the race. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, also said Mueller's team indicated that the entire probe could end by September, not just its investigation into potential obstruction of justice."This would be the culmination of the investigation into the president," Giuliani said. The special counsel's office did not respond to a request for comment. It is not certain that Trump will sit for an interview with Mueller, though the president has publicly said he would. Giuliani said a decision would not be made until after Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, which is slated for June 12. Giuliani said Sunday the two sides "were getting closer" to agreeing on the parameters on a potential interview but would not put the odds of it happening at better than 50/50.Giuliani's apparent attempt to publicly pressure Mueller on the timeline amid interview negotiations came just hours after Trump's demand for a new inquiry, which moved beyond his usual blustery accusations of institutional wrongdoing and into the realm of applying presidential pressure on the Justice Department, a move few of his predecessors have made.Trump made the order amid days of public venting about the special counsel investigation, which he has deemed a "witch hunt" that he says has yielded no evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russia. In response, the Justice Department moved Sunday to defuse a growing confrontation with the White House by asking its watchdog to investigate whether there was inappropriate surveillance. It was not immediately clear if that move would satisfy Trump, or if any further demands could lead to a confrontation with FBI Director Christopher Wray or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the Mueller investigation. Rosenstein released a statement Sunday saying, "If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action."The Justice Department probe had begun in March at the request of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and congressional Republicans. Sessions and the lawmakers had urged Inspector General Michael Horowitz to review whether FBI and Justice Department officials abused their surveillance powers by using information compiled by Christopher Steele, a former British spy, and paid for by Democrats to justify monitoring Carter Page, a former campaign adviser to Trump.Horowitz said his office will look at those claims as well as communications between Steele and DOJ and FBI officials.Trump did not elaborate on the promised "demand," which he included in one of a series of tweets he sent throughout the day Sunday. On Saturday, Trump tweeted, "If the FBI or DOJ was infiltrating a campaign for the benefit of another campaign, that is a really big deal." He said only the release or review of documents the House Intelligence Committee is seeking from the Justice Department "can give conclusive answers."Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called Trump's claim of an embedded spy "nonsense.""His 'demand' DOJ investigate something they know to be untrue is an abuse of power, and an effort to distract from his growing legal problems," Schiff tweeted. "Never mind that DOJ has warned that lives and alliances are at risk. He doesn't care."Trump's extraordinary demand of the Justice Department alarmed many observers, who felt it not only violated presidential protocol but also could have a chilling effect on federal law enforcement or its use of informants. Giuliani defended the president's actions."As the president's lawyer, I can't be concerned on what effect it may have," he said. "To me, there's not much of a difference between an informant's ongoing collection of information in a surreptitious way or a spy."If this guy was an FBI implant into the campaign," Giuliani said, "that's as offensive as Watergate."The New York Times was the first to report that the FBI had an informant who met several times with Trump campaign officials who had suspicious contacts linked to Russia.Giuliani said the information discovered by the source should eventually be made public and released to Congress, even if the source's identity is kept confidential. The GOP-led House Intelligence Committee closed its Russian meddling probe last month, saying it found no evidence of collusion or co-ordination between Trump's campaign and Russia. Schiff and other committee Democrats were furious and argued that Republicans had not subpoenaed many witnessed they considered essential to the committee's work.Sunday was not the first time that Trump accused his predecessor of politically motivated activity against him.Without substantiation, Trump tweeted in March 2017 that former President Barack Obama had conducted surveillance the previous October at Trump Tower, the New York skyscraper where Trump ran his campaign and transition and maintains a residence. Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets. Trump fired Comey over the bureau's Russia investigation.___Lemire reported from New York. HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24
22  The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.

24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Toxic cloud caused by Hawaii volcano lava emerges over ocean-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 22, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii — White plumes of acid and extremely fine shards of glass billowed into the sky over Hawaii as molten rock from Kilauea volcano poured into the ocean, creating yet another hazard from an eruption that began more than two weeks ago: A toxic steam cloud.Authorities on Sunday warned the public to stay away the cloud that formed by a chemical reaction when lava touched seawater.Further upslope, lava continued gushing out of large cracks in the ground in residential neighbourhoods in a rural part of the Big Island. The molten rock made rivers that bisected forests and farms as it meandered toward the coast. The rate of sulfur dioxide gas shooting from the ground fissures tripled, leading Hawaii County to repeat warnings about air quality. At the volcano's summit, two explosive eruptions unleashed clouds of ash. Winds carried much of it toward the southwest.Joseph Kekedi, an orchid grower who lives and works about 3 miles (5 kilometres ) from where lava dropped into the sea, said the flow luckily did not head toward him. At one point, it was about a mile (asterisk)1.6 kilometres ) upslope from his property in the coastal community of Kapoho.Residents can only stay informed and be ready to get out of the way, he said."Here's nature reminding us again who's boss," Kekedi said.Scientists said the steam clouds at the spots where lava entered the ocean were laced with hydrochloric acid and fine glass particles that can irritate skin and eyes and cause breathing problems. The lava haze called "laze" from the plume spread as far as 15 miles (24 kilometres ) west of where the lava met the ocean on the Big Island's southern coast. It was just offshore and running parallel to the coast, said U.S. Geological Survey scientist Wendy Stovall.Scientists said the acid in the plume was about as corrosive as diluted battery acid. The glass was in the form of fine glass shards. Getting hit by it might feel like being sprinkled with glitter."If you're feeling stinging on your skin, go inside," Stovall said. Authorities warned that the plume could shift direction if the winds changed. The Coast Guard said it was enforcing a safety zone extending 984 feet (300 metres ) around the ocean entry point.Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. John Bannon said in a statement Sunday that "getting too close to the lava can result in serious injury or death."Gov. David Ige told reporters in Hilo that the state was monitoring the volcano and keeping people safe."Like typical eruptions and lava flows, it's really allowing Madam Pele to run its course," he said, referring to the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.Ige said he was thankful that the current lava flows did not pose a threat to homes and hoped it would stay that way.On Saturday, the eruption claimed its first major injury when a man was struck in the leg by a flying piece of lava.David Mace, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency who was helping Hawaii County respond to the disaster, did not have further details about the man's injuries or his condition.Kilauea has burned some 40 structures, including two dozen homes, since it began erupting in people's backyards in the Leilani Estates neighbourhood on May 3. About 2,000 people have evacuated their homes, including 300 who were staying in shelters. In recent days, the lava began to move more quickly and emerge from the ground in greater volume. Scientists said that's because the lava that first erupted was magma left over from a 1955 erupted that had been stored in the ground for the past six decades. The molten rock that began emerging over the past few days was from magma that has recently moved down the volcano's eastern flank from one or two craters that sit further upslope — the Puu Oo crater and the summit crater. The new lava is hotter, moves faster and has spread over a wider area.Early Monday, a small eruption occurred at the Kilauea summit, producing an ash plume that reached about 7,000 feet (2,134 metres ). Officials said wind carried the ash plume to the southwest, toward the communities of Wood Valley, Pahala, Naalehu and Waiohinu.Scientists have said they do not know how long the eruption will last. The volcano has opened more than 20 vents, including four that have merged into one large crack. It has been gushing lava high into the sky and sending a river of molten rock toward the ocean at about 300 yards (274 metres ) per hour.Hawaii tourism officials have stressed that most of the Big Island remains unaffected by the eruption and is open for business.___McAvoy reported from Honolulu. Syrian regime says Islamic State fully ousted from Damascus-In major advance, Assad troops retake Yarmouk, Hajar al-Aswad; army declares area 'completely secure'-By AFP-MAY 22,18

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria’s army said Monday it was in full control of the capital Damascus and its outskirts after ousting the Islamic State group, marking a major milestone in the seven-year war.“The Syrian army announces today that Damascus, its outskirts and surrounding towns are completely secure,” it said in a statement carried on official media. The development came after troops had captured a key southern portion of Damascus from IS, the statement said, including the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk and the adjacent district of Hajar al-Aswad.“The wheel of our progress on the battlefield will not stop until all Syrian land is purified,” it added.Syria’s war erupted in 2011 with protests against President Bashar Assad, including in the capital. The following year, the government began losing control of parts of Damascus and placed a crippling siege around Yarmouk, which lies in the capital’s south. The army’s announcement came hours after a tenuous evacuation deal saw hundreds of IS fighters and their relatives quit Yarmouk, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The government has denied reaching a deal with IS. It said a brief ceasefire had allowed one convoy of women and children to leave the pocket in southern Damascus.Since last year, Syria’s government has cleared swathes of territory around Damascus from its armed opponents through a blend of military pressure and evacuation deals.

Detained Iranian British woman now accused of ‘spreading propaganda’-Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe learned of new charge at a court hearing in Tehran, husband says-By AP-MAY 22,18-TOI

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The husband of an Iranian-British woman detained in Tehran says she now faces a new charge of “spreading propaganda against the regime.”A statement Monday from him says Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe learned of the new charge at a court hearing Saturday before Judge Abolghassem Salavati of Tehran’s hard-line Revolutionary Court.Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who works for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, is serving a five-year prison sentence for allegedly planning the “soft toppling” of Iran’s government while traveling with her young daughter. Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said “the judge told Nazanin to expect that there will likely be another conviction and sentence against her.”Iranian state media and officials didn’t immediately report the court hearing.Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s case comes as London is considering repaying Tehran some 400 million British pounds from a pre-1979 arms deal.

US envoy accuses ‘liberal media’ of ‘glorifying’ Hamas terrorists-In Fox News op-ed, David Friedman claims reporters were 'enraged' that embassy relocation passed peacefully, sought to denigrate Trump-By TOI staff-MAY 22,18

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman on Sunday accused the “liberal media” of “glorifying” Hamas terrorists in its coverage of last week’s US embassy move and concurrent Gaza riots in order to denigrate US President Donald Trump, and appeared to accuse the press of having “blood on its hands” for allowing Hamas to garner front page real estate. In an op-ed published on the Fox News website late Sunday, the American diplomat maintained that violent riots on the Gaza border, which coincided with the US embassy opening in Jerusalem last Monday, were unrelated to the US move, but were rather the culmination of the “March of Return” protests that began weeks earlier. He also defended Israel’s use of live fire in response to the protests on the Gaza border, during which over 60 Palestinians were reported killed last week, saying the “overwhelming majority” of the fatalities were Hamas members and no country would have responded differently to the border threat.“The opening ceremony was a beautiful and uplifting event attended by hundreds and watched by millions. As the ceremony proceeded, there were a few sporadic, peaceful protests from among the hundreds of thousands of Arabs living in Jerusalem. The West Bank remained calm,” wrote Friedman of last week’s US embassy dedication.Friedman appeared to be referring to a protest outside the embassy opening during which hundreds of people rallied against the move, including several Arab Knesset members. Scuffles between police and protesters broke out and at one point a lawmaker was thrown to the ground. Police said 14 people were arrested. The West Bank also saw sporadic protests in which several hundred Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces, though the demonstrations paled in comparison to the 40,000 people reported to have protested on the Gaza border.“The apparent success of the embassy’s opening ceremony enraged the liberal media. Could this be yet another diplomatic triumph by President Trump? The prospect was unbearable,” Friedman wrote.Friedman blasted the media’s use of the split screen to report simultaneously on both the Gaza border violence and the embassy move, saying it was misleading to viewers as the two incidents were taking place 60 miles apart. His comments echoed other Israeli and US officials, who have sought to decouple the Gaza protests from the embassy opening.“The next day, the liberal media vilified everyone associated with the embassy move and glorified the poor Hamas terrorists,” wrote Friedman. “Failed diplomats who never brought peace or stability to the region were pulled out of mothballs to regurgitate their calcified thinking. And the most deranged even accused the administration of having blood on its hands.”Friedman alleged that Hamas was encouraged to stoke violence by media outlets that he claimed were “desperate” to besmirch the US president by presenting “a dark side to an otherwise uplifting story.”“Ironically, Hamas had recently woken up to the fact that most responsible journalists were on to its game and Hamas was considering ending its suicidal assaults on the Israeli border. But seeing the opportunity to curry the front page or the A Block from reporters willing to shed a negative light on our president, Hamas enthusiastically launched its youth back into the fire. So who really has blood on their hands?” Friedman wrote.Friedman on Saturday was quoted as saying evangelical Christians are more passionate supporters of Israel than many Jews. Speaking to the New York Times about the prominent involvement of Christian supporters of Israel at the Monday inauguration of the US embassy in Jerusalem, over which he presided, Friedman said evangelical Christians “support Israel with much greater fervor and devotion than many in the Jewish community.”On Monday,  Israeli army’s spokesperson penned a scathing article for the Wall Street Journal, condemning Hamas for “[lying] to the world” about the recent Gaza border riots and criticizing international media outlets for accepting the falsehoods. The “modus operandi [of Hamas officials] is simple: Lie. Their lies support the stated goal of Hamas: the delegitimization and destruction of Israel,” wrote IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis. The deaths of over 60 Palestinians during last week’s violent protests were met with international outrage and calls for an independent investigation of events. The UN’s Human Rights Council on Friday ordered a probe, and a resolution prepared by Kuwait for the UN Security Council urges the deployment of an international force to protect Gazans.Hamas has subsequently admitted that 50 of the dead were members of the terror group. Three others were Islamic Jihad members.Since March 30, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have conducted weekly, sometimes daily, mass demonstrations along the security fence, known collectively as the “March of Return.” Though the marches were started by a coalition of various groups in Gaza who called for them to be nonviolent, the plans were quickly coopted by the Hamas terror group, which has ruled the coastal enclave since taking it over in 2007 in a violent coup. The violence peaked last Monday afternoon, as US and Israeli officials were gathering in Jerusalem for the embassy dedication.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

US vows ‘strongest sanctions in history’ on Iran, will ‘crush’ terror proxies-'This is just the beginning': Laying out strategy after exiting nuke deal, Pompeo says Iran must come clean about nuclear program, stop threatening Israel, leave Syria, halt terror-By Eric Cortellessa and Agencies-TOI-MAY 22,18

WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Trump administration is preparing to impose “the strongest sanctions in history” on Tehran after withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month, and laid out a laundry list of demands for a new treaty, in his first major speech outlining Washington’s strategy for curtailing the Islamic Republic’s nuclear ambitions and its ‘malign’ regional behavior.“We will apply unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime,” Pompeo told a crowd gathered at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in the nation’s capital.“The sting of sanctions will only grow more painful if the regime does not change course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen for itself and the people of Iran,” he added.“Sanctions are going back in full effect, and new ones are coming,” he warned. “The Iranian regime should know this is just the beginning.”Fulminating against the landmark international agreement brokered under the Obama administration, Pompeo said US President Donald Trump was “willing, ready and able” to negotiate a new deal, but not inside the context of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the deal is formally known.“We will not renegotiate the JCPOA itself,” he said.Trump’s newly installed top diplomat also hinted at the possibility of military action should Iranian leaders reconstitute their nuclear program.“If they restart their nuclear program, they will have big problems, bigger problems than they’ve ever had before,” he said.Pompeo also threatened to “crush” Iran’s terrorist proxies around the world.”“We will ensure freedom of navigation on the waters in the region. We will work to prevent and counteract any Iranian malign cyber activity. We will track down Iranian operatives and their Hezbollah proxies operating around the world and crush them,” said the secretary. “Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East.”Pompeo, one of the administration’s most strident critics of the pact, vowed to never let Iran develop a nuclear weapon while ticking off “12 conditions” that the United States considers prerequisites for any firm agreement with the Islamic Republic. He said the length of the list was simple testament to the “scope of the malign behavior of Iran.”Pompeo demanded that Iran come clean about all of its past nuclear work, completely stop its uranium enrichment, provide the International Atomic Energy Agency “unqualified access to all sites throughout the country,” halt its ballistic missile development and testing, end its support for Middle East terrorist groups, and respect the sovereignty of the Iraqi government.“We will continue to work with our allies to counter the regime’s destabilizing activities in the region, block their financing of terror, and address Iran’s proliferation of missiles and other advanced weapons that threaten peace and stability,” Pompeo said. “We will also ensure Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon — ever.”He also said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps must end its support for terrorists and that Iran must “end its threatening behavior against its neighbors, including Israel.”Iran, he said, must also remove all its forces from Syria. At the same time, Pompeo offered Iran a series of dramatic potential US concessions if it agrees to make “major changes.” Under a new agreement, the US would be willing to lift all sanctions, restore full diplomatic and commercial ties with Iran, and even support the modernization of its economy, Pompeo said.Repeatedly trying to draw a distinction between the Trump and Obama administrations’ approaches to the Iranian nuclear challenge, Pompeo said Washington would seek a treaty with Iran, ensuring that any agreement is codified in Congress, unlike the JCPOA, which had been an executive agreement. “A treaty would be our preferred way to go,” he said.“The Obama administration made a bet. That bet was a loser with massive repercussions,” he said. “The bet was a bad one for the US, for Europe, and for the world. Iran’s leaders saw it as a starting gun for the march across the Middle East.”Should Iran fully comply with the Trump administration’s demands, Pompeo said, all the sanctions about to be imposed would be lifted and the United States would be “prepared to support the modernization and reintegration of Iran’s economy into the international system.”Such a response, he said, would yield better outcomes for the Iranian people, who have suffered under the oppression of Iran’s tyrannical, theocratic leaders.Pompeo urged Iran to “look into the mirror” and “come to its senses.”US President Donald Trump has long said the original 2015 deal with Iran — also signed by Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia — did not go far enough, and now wants the Europeans and others to support his hardline strategy.“In the strategy we are announcing today, we want the support of our most important allies and partners in the region and around the globe. I don’t just mean our friends in Europe,” Pompeo said. The secretary of state also warned European businesses that work with Iran in violation of US sanctions that they will be held “to account.”The reestablishment of the US sanctions will force European companies to choose between investing in Iran or trading with the United States, setting up a possible rift with allies across the Atlantic. For now, the European Union is trying to persuade Iran to stay in the 2015 agreement, even without Washington’s participation.“I know our allies in Europe may try to keep the old nuclear deal going with Tehran. That is their decision to make,” Pompeo said. “They know where we stand.”

Vietnam says Chinese bombers in disputed South China Sea increase tensions-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 22, 2018

HANOI (Reuters) - Recent activity by China's strategic bombers in the South China Sea's Paracel Islands seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty over the disputed territory, Vietnam's foreign ministry said on Monday.China's air force said bombers such as the H-6K had landed and taken off from islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of training exercises last week. The flights "increase tensions, cause regional instabilities and are not good for maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the East Sea," foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement, using the Vietnamese name for the South China Sea.The Philippines also expressed "serious concerns" on Monday over the presence of the bombers in the area and its foreign ministry has taken "appropriate diplomatic action".Vietnam and China have long been embroiled in maritime disputes in the South China Sea. The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have claims to parts of the potentially energy-rich maritime territory."Vietnam demands that China stop these activities, cease militarization of the area, and strictly respect Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa islands," Hang said, referring to the Paracels.Hang said the presence of the bombers in the area has an adverse impact on ongoing negotiations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kan urged other countries not to over-interpret what he called a routine military patrol."We hope that relevant parties do not read too much into this," Lu Kang told a daily news briefing.Earlier this month, Vietnam also asked China to withdraw military equipment from the nearby Spratly Islands in the disputed waters, following media reports that China had installed missiles there. In response, China said its deployment of defense equipment and troops on the islands was its right, adding that the equipment helped protect the peace and stability of the region and "does not target any country".Vietnam's state oil firm PetroVietnam has said maritime tensions with China will hurt its offshore exploration and production activities. In March, the company told Spanish energy firm Repsol to halt an oil project offshore of Vietnam under pressure from China.Last week, a unit of Russian state oil firm Rosneft also expressed its concern that its recent drilling in the area could upset China.(Reporting by Khanh Vu; Editing by James Pearson and Peter Graff)

Russia's first sea-borne nuclear power plant arrives in Arctic-[Reuters]-By Vladimir Soldatkin-YAHOONEWS-May 22, 2018

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's first-floating nuclear power plant arrived in the Arctic port of Murmansk over the weekend in preparation for its maiden mission, providing electricity to an isolated Russian town across the Bering Strait from Alaska. The state company behind the plant, called the "Akademik Lomonosov", says it could pioneer a new power source for remote regions of the planet, but green campaigners have expressed concern about the risk of nuclear accidents. Greenpeace has called it the "nuclear Titanic".Russian state nuclear company Rosatom, which developed the floating power plant, said that it docked the unit in Murmansk on Saturday where it was towed from St Petersburg, the city where it was built. In Murmansk it will take on board a supply of nuclear fuel. It will then will be towed to the town of Pevek in the Far Eastern region of Chukotka, separated from the U.S. state of Alaska by the 86-km (53 miles) wide Bering Strait. It will start operations there next year. The plant will replace a coal-fired power plant and an aging nuclear power plant supplying more than 50,000 people with electricity in Chukotka, Rosatom said.Rosatom has long planned to launch the sea-borne power units, which, with their mobile, small capacity plants, are best suited to remote regions. It says they can help the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming. The small plants were designed to make it possible to supply electricity to hard-to-reach areas of Russia. They can operate non-stop without the need for refueling for 3-5 years.Environmental protection groups, including Greenpeace, have sent a letter to Rosatom boss Alexei Likhachyov demanding strict adherence to safety standards and saying they were watching the floating facility's development "with great concern".The letter calls for full and unrestricted regulatory oversight by the Russian nuclear regulator and an international study into the environmental impact before the reactors are loaded with fuel and tested."Nuclear reactors bobbing around the Arctic Ocean will pose a shockingly obvious threat to a fragile environment which is already under enormous pressure from climate change," Jan Haverkamp, nuclear expert for Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe, said in a statement last month.(Reporting by Vladimir Soldatkin and Katya Golubkova in Moscow and Geert De Clercq in Brussels)
