Obama Plans Media Blitz Monday As Syria Vote Looms




President Barack Obama will give interviews Monday to ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN and Fox, according to a White House pool report, as he seeks to persuade Congress to approve a U.S. military strike against Syria.
The interviews will be taped in the afternoon and appear in the evening on those channels, per the pool report.Earlier Saturday, Obama made pressed his case in the White House weekly address, promising that the mission in Syria would not turn into another Iraq or Afghanistan. He vowed that the strikes would be limited and that Bashar al-Assad's regime must be punished for using chemical weapons to murder his own people."We cannot turn a blind eye to images like the ones we’ve seen out of Syria," he said. "Failing to respond to this outrageous attack would increase the risk that chemical weapons could be used again; that they would fall into the hands of terrorists who might use them against us, and it would send a horrible signal to other nations that there would be no consequences for their use of these weapons.  All of which would pose a serious threat to our national security."

AIPAC and other groups are campaigning for Congress to authorize force against Damascus, but face war-weary lawmakers in making their case

The Anti-Defamation League urged Congress to “act swiftly to add its voice to hold [Assad] accountable for the wanton slaughter of his own citizens.”“Any nation that violates international norms and obligations which threaten the peace and security of the world must face the consequences of those dangerous acts,” it said.
In making their case for military action to punish Syria for using chemical weapons, Obama and his aides have gone out of their way to court the support of the American Jews by drawing parallels between Syrian President Bashar Assad’s use of poison gas and the gas chambers of Nazi Germany.Visiting the Great Synagogue of Stockholm on a trip to Sweden last week, Obama alluded to the connection while paying tribute to Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat credited with saving at least 20,000 Jews during the Holocaust.“Because he refused to stand by, Wallenberg reminds us of our power when we choose not simply to bear witness, but also to act,” Obama said.He later added: “I cannot think of a better tribute to Raoul Wallenberg than for each of us, as individuals and as nations, to reaffirm our determination to live the values that defined his life and to make the same choice in our time.”Secretary of State John Kerry has invoked the phrase “never again,” a direct reference to international vows to prevent a repeat of the Holocaust, and even compared Assad to Adolf Hitler, something that even the pro-Israel groups backing the administration have shied away from, at least so far.Despite winning universal condemnation of Assad for using chemical weapons, the administration has found its arguments are not convincing skeptical lawmakers and their war-weary constituents that military action is a moral imperative.“I think Israel has a strong natural defense and I think they can do well in any battle. But I don’t want to involve Israel in a battle because they have so many enemies around them that I’m fearful it can spin out of control,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Sean Hannity of Fox News last week.Officials with several pro-Israel groups say they are encountering the same problem, which is compounded by pure political motivations, especially among Republicans, for opposing Obama’s request.They said they will continue to lobby in the days ahead — AIPAC is bringing some 250 pro-Israel activists to Washington next week to push for the authorization — but they have also told the White House that only a powerful and direct personal appeal from Obama himself is likely to have an impact.“The idea that the pro-Israel community is a magic wand that can make this vote happen is a conspiracy theory,” said Josh Block, a former AIPAC spokesman who now heads The Israel Project. “It’s not born out of reality.”“But, certainly when supporters of the U.S.-Israel relationship and experts in the region who have real credibility join with the president and other voices in the foreign policy and human rights community, it matters,” he said.Of course, Republicans are not the only ones opposing the authorization.
Many of the president’s Democratic supporters are deeply conflicted over the use of force.“I think every member of Congress’ perception is colored by what happened in Iraq,” said Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, who is seeking a Senate seat in 2014 and is leaning against authorizing force. “If Iran responds to our sending cruise missiles into Syria by launching an attack into Israel, and then Israel retaliates, and Hezbollah retaliates against Israel, I have a hard time seeing how the United States avoids getting drawn into a broader regional conflict.”This divide also is apparent among Israel-centric organizations.J Street, the relatively recent arrival to the Israel-related lobbying scene that has promoted peace with the Palestinians as its major issue, condemned the use of chemical weapons but stopped far short of the other groups in offering explicit support for Obama’s call.“As President Obama and world leaders contemplate the appropriate course of action, we are cognizant that there are no easy or clear-cut solutions,” it said. “Any action taken should aim to minimize the loss of civilian life, deter the further use of chemical weapons and avoid regional spillover.”

(CNN) -- Men sprawled on a tile floor, shirtless and convulsing. Children, too, seemingly unable to control their shaking and flailing. Panic and screams in the background.These are some of the hard-to-stomach images that the Obama administration has shown a select group of senators in closed-door briefings to make the case that a limited military attack on Syria is justified.CNN was the first to obtain the 13 different videos seen by members of the Senate Intelligence Committee that depict the gruesome scene of an chemical weapons attack in Syria on August 21. The administration told senators that their authenticity was verified by the intelligence community.The attack, allegedly carried out by Syrian forces under President Bashar al-Assad, has touched off the most critical foreign policy question since the uprising began in 2011: Is a military response merited? The videos capture a moment of panic, as those who are standing try to feed water to those who appear incapacitated. Prayers are repeated.

Many of the videos were previously posted on YouTube, but this collection of footage is significant because the intelligence community has given it a stamp of authenticity.The footage could be vital in the administration's quest to convince Congress and the American public that the U.S. must launch punitive strikes against Syria, former U.N. Ambassador Bill Richardson said."That video will sensitize the American people that this isn't just an intervention, that this is a military strike to stop that type of atrocity," the former congressman told CNN.While the videos are hard to watch, they do not prove who is responsible for the attack, nor do they provide an answer for whether military strikes are the correct course.President Barack Obama favors limited intervention, and his administration has been working nonstop to convince allies in Europe and lawmakers back home for support.Hours after CNN obtained and broadcast portions of the videos, the Senate Intelligence Committee posted them on its website for public viewing.An aide to Dianne Feinstein, the committee's chairwoman, said it's expected the video will be played Monday at a briefing for all House members. Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and National Security Adviser Susan Rice will be among those representing the Obama administration at that hearing and one Wednesday for senators, according to the White House.Based on her attendance at closed-door briefings, Feinstein has decided to vote in favor of the measure to intervene militarily in Syria, defying the wishes of many of her constituents."What's coming in is overwhelmingly negative," Feinstein said Thursday about the feedback from voters. "There's no question about that. But you see, then they don't know what I know."The availability of these videos obtained by CNN means that anyone can see at least part of the administration's evidence and come to their own conclusions.One video shows a room with enough children to fill a classroom, but they are arranged on the ground, the bright colors of their shirts -- red, yellow, green, purple, blue -- contrasting the paleness of their dead bodies. There were dead adults placed in this space, too. The video captures at least six rows of adults with no less than four bodies each.Sheets and blankets cover some of the bodies.In another video, a man uses a manual resuscitator on a toddler, who appears motionless. Another man comes with a bottled water and the men together try to rinse the small boy's face. It looks like the boy's chest moves, but his arms remain pinned to his side like a soldier at attention.CNN cannot independently confirm the authenticity of the videos. But officials have a number of reasons as to why they believe they are authentic.The videos were shot from multiple angles, providing overlap, not just in what could be seen but what could be heard, the administration officials told the senators.

Two RAF jets were scrambled from their base in Cyprus to urgently investigate Syrian planes that had crossed into international airspace, it has emerged.The Ministry of Defence confirmed that unidentified planes legally crossed into Cypriot skies from the east of the country last Monday.But it is understood the behaviour of the aircraft raised suspicions at RAF Akrotiri, less than 200 miles from Syria, prompting the rapid response.

The aircraft retreated before any action was taken by the two RAF air-defence Typhoons.
A spokesman for the MoD said: 'The MoD can confirm that Typhoon Air Defence Aircraft operated from RAF Akrotiri on Monday to investigate unidentified aircraft to the east of Cyprus; the aircraft were flying legally in international airspace and no intercept was required.'A military source told the Sunday People: 'Recent intelligence reports have warned of an attack on Akrotiri.'The RAF Typhoons were launched after sensitive airborne early-warning radarpicked up the "contacts" floying low and fast.'
Akrotiri is one of Britain's largest overseas bases and is home to more than 1,300 personnel. It was used in the air campaign against Gaddafi's Libya in 2011.It comes amid rising global tensions with Syria as the U.S. seeks to build support for military strikes against President Bashar Asssad's regime.

Number 10 indicated last week that Britain is not expecting its military bases such as RAF Akrotiri to be used by allies in any air strikes.RAF Akrotiri is used by the RAF as a base for overseas operations in the Middle East and also for training.A week ago, six RAF Typhoon jets were sent to Cyprus in what the MoD called a 'prudent and precautionary measure'.On its website, the MoD says Typhoon Jets provide the RAF with a 'multi-role combat aircraft, capable of being deployed in the full spectrum of air operations, from air policing, to peace support, through to high-intensity conflict'.
