WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia is the leading suspect in a sophisticated cyber attack on the unclassified email network of the U.S. military's Joint Staff that prompted the Pentagon last month to restrict access to portions of that network, U.S. officials said on Thursday.Early reports firmly linked Russia to the attack, said one U.S. official, who declined to be named since the investigation is still underway."It was a spearphishing attack traced to that country," said the official, when asked about Russia's possible involvement. Spearphishing emails purport to be from colleagues.A second official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, described Russia as a leading suspect but cautioned that it would take time for investigators to firmly attribute blame.The Pentagon declined comment on the investigation.In late April, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter blamed Russian hackers for a cyber intrusion on an unclassified U.S. military network this year, saying they discovered an old vulnerability that had not been patched.In that case, Carter said the Pentagon quickly identified the compromise and had incident responders "hunting the intruders within 24 hours."In this latest case, the U.S. military's Joint Staff, which employs about 2,500 civilian and uniformed personnel, have seen their unclassified email access severely restricted since the last weekend of July. The officials also report the suspected Russian hackers coordinated the sophisticated cyberassault via encrypted accounts on social media.”It’s not the first, nor the largest, hacking attack in recent weeks and months. HOUSTON, Aug. 4--The fifth undercover video in the controversy over Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted baby parts shows the Director of Research for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, Melissa Farrell, advertising the Texas Planned Parenthood branch’s track record of fetal tissue sales, including its ability to deliver fully intact fetuses.In the video, actors posing as representatives from a human biologics company meet with Farrell at the abortion-clinic headquarters of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Houston to discuss a potential partnership to harvest fetal organs.“Where we probably have an edge over other organizations, our organization has been doing research for many many years,” explains Farrell. When researchers need a specific part from the aborted fetus, Farrell says, “We bake that into our contract, and our protocol, that we follow this, so we deviate from our standard in order to do that.”Asked specifically if this means Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast can change abortion procedures to supply intact fetal specimens, Farrell affirms, “Some of our doctors in the past have projects and they’re collecting the specimens, so they do it in a way that they get the best specimens, so I know it can happen.”The investigators ask Farrell how she will frame a contract in which they pay a higher price for higher quality fetal body parts, and she replies, “We can work it out in the context of--obviously, the procedure itself is more complicated,” suggesting that “without having you cover the procedural cost” and paying for the abortion, the higher specimen price could be framed as “additional time, cost, administrative burden.”Farrell finally summarizes her affiliate’s approach to fetal tissue payments: “If we alter our process, and we are able to obtain intact fetal cadavers, we can make it part of the budget that any dissections are this, and splitting the specimens into different shipments is this. It’s all just a matter of line items.”The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000 (42 U.S.C. 289g-2). Federal law also requires that no alteration in the timing or method of abortion be done for the purposes of fetal tissue collection (42 U.S.C. 289g-1).Farrell also indicates to the investigators over lunch that the specimen sales from her department contribute significantly to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast’s overall finances: “I think everyone realizes, especially because my department contributes so much to the bottom line of our organization here, you know we’re one of the largest affiliates, our Research Department is the largest in the United States. Larger than any the other affiliates’ combined.” In a Texas Senate hearing on July 29, former Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast clinic director Abby Johnson estimated that the affiliate had previously made up to $120,000 per month off of aborted fetal tissue.The video is the fifth by The Center for Medical Progress documenting Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted fetal parts. A federal judge on Monday extended a restraining order that bars abortion opponents from releasing secretly recorded video and audio that allegedly involve discussions of the sale of tissue from aborted fetuses.U.S. District Judge William Orrick III on Friday issued a temporary restraining order that blocked the Center for Medical Progress and its founder, David Daleiden, from releasing the videos and audio recordings pending a court hearing Monday in San Francisco. The National Abortion Federation, a nonprofit group that represents abortion providers, sued the center, saying its representatives had illegally recorded private meetings.The order also bars anti-abortion activists from disclosing the names or addresses of abortion federation members, plus the dates or locations of future meetings.He extended the restraining order until an Aug. 27 hearing for a permanent injunction.Dems block plan to defund Planned Parenthood-Orrick wrote Friday that the federation was "likely to suffer irreparable injury ...in the form of harassment, intimidation, violence, invasion of privacy, and injury to reputation" if the materials were released. He said the group was likely to prevail on the merits of its lawsuit, which accuses the center of conspiracy, fraud, racketeering, misrepresentation and trespassing.One big factor in Orrick's decision was the non-disclosure agreements the center's representatives signed when they registered as conference participants. He said they were signed "under false pretenses."Brian Chavez-Ochoa, lawyer for the Center for Medical Progress, said the Irvine, Calif., group would abide by Orrick's decision but would release other material not covered by his order. He called the abortion federation material "a small percentage" of what has been gathered and "of a limited nature to the investigation as a whole."Court stops anti-abortion group attempts to release undercover videos-After the hearing, National Abortion Federation President Vicki Saporta said her organizations relies on non-disclosure agreements to protect the privacy and safety of conference participants. Sixty votes were needed to advance it in the 100-person chamber. It received 53 votes, with 46 senators opposing it. Planned Parenthood, which provides health care services to millions of women at hundreds of centres countrywide, has come under attack with the online posting of hidden-camera videos produced by an anti-abortion group, Center for Medical Progress.The group has said the videos show Planned Parenthood officials negotiating prices for fetal tissue from abortions it performs. History, eugenics and genetics-What is eugenics?

Eugenics is the philosophy and social movement that argues it is possible to improve the human race and society by encouraging reproduction by people or populations with “desirable” traits (termed “positive” eugenics) and discouraging reproduction by people with “undesirable” qualities (termed “negative” eugenics). The eugenics movement began in the United States in the early part of the 20th century; the United States was the first country to have a systematic program for performing sterilizations on individuals without their knowledge or against their will. It was supported and encouraged by a wide swath of people, including politicians, scientists, social reformers, prominent business leaders and other influential individuals who shared a goal of reducing the “burden” on society. The majority of people targeted for sterilization were deemed of inferior intelligence, particularly poor people and eventually people of color.[1] In the early 20th century, many scientists were skeptical of the scientific underpinnings of eugenics. Eugenicists argued that parents from “good stock” produced healthier and intellectually superior children. They believed that “traits” such as poverty, shiftlessness, criminality and poor work ethic were inherited and that people of Nordic ancestry were inherently superior to other peoples, despite an obvious lack of evidence and scientific proof. However, eugenicists were able to persuade the Carnegie Institution and prestigious universities to support their work, thus legitimizing it and creating the perception that their philosophy was, in fact, science.The eugenics movement became widely seen as a legitimate way to improve society and was supported by such people as Winston Churchill, Margaret Sanger, Theodore Roosevelt and John Harvey Kellogg. Eugenics became an academic discipline at many prominent colleges, including Harvard University, Dartmouth College, University of Washington and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), among many others. From the outset, the movement also had critics, including lawyer and civil rights advocate Clarence Darrow as well as scientists who refuted the idea that “purity” leads to fewer negative gene mutations. Nevertheless, between 1927 and the 1970s, there were more than 60,000 compulsory sterilizations performed in 33 states in the United States; California led the nation with over 20,000. Experts think many more sterilizations were likely performed, but not officially recorded.[2] Adolf Hitler based some of his early ideas about eugenics on the programs practiced in the United States. After World War II and the Holocaust, the American eugenics movement was widely condemned. However, sterilization programs continued in many states until the mid-1970s.How can we as a society avoid the mistakes of the past to take advantage of the promise of genetics? Today, safeguards have been established to ensure that the ethical implications of new technologies are discussed and debated before being employed on a large scale. In this way, the benefits and advances arising from scientific research and medical procedures can be achieved both ethically and humanely. Examples of the efforts of the United States government to ensure that progress in science, research and technology proceeds in an ethical and socially acceptable manner include the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, well known for the development of the Belmont Report, and the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI) program housed in the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).Many people fear that new advances in genetics could lead to a new era of eugenics. However, these advances lead to sometimes difficult ethical questions, particularly related to reproductive technologies and embryo screening. As science advances, what traits might people be able to choose or select against? Is it acceptable for prospective parents to have a say in which embryos are implanted in a women’s uterus for non-medical reasons? Is it acceptable for society to dictate this decision to prospective parents? Many of the break throughs have saved lives and will continue to do so on a grander scale, and we, as a society, need to discuss the complex issues related to genetic technologies. And when I think about what she did all those years ago in Brooklyn, taking … attitudes and accusations flowing from all directions, I am really in awe of her.”Well, okay then.SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must De-Fund Planned Parenthood Immediately In one sense, of course, it’s not news when a pro-abortion progressive such as Mrs. Clinton attempts to lionize Sanger, who founded the organization that became Planned Parenthood. But it sure was news—and created a firestorm—when Christianity Today gave a platform for a columnist to do the same thing. In an online piece, Rachel Marie Stone—while acknowledging that Sanger “did hold eugenicist ideas”—invited us to see the bigger picture.Stone noted that Sanger actually opposed abortion in her day as the taking of life and said Sanger’s emphasis on providing poor women access to birth control saved countless lives around the world. Isn’t it ironic, though, that although Planned Parenthood rejected its founder’s position on abortion, it absorbed Sanger’s fully formed racism. That’s because there’s an inescapable logic flowing from Sanger’s racist worldview last century and the naked barbarism we see from Planned Parenthood today.Sanger wrote about the “deterioration in the human stock” and “the perpetuation of defectives, delinquents, and dependents.” Lest you have any doubt about what this woman of so-called “courage, … tenacity, [and] vision” meant, Sanger was committed to reducing the number of African Americans through contraception.Quoth Sanger: “We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” Isn’t it amazing that a woman who said what Sanger did isn’t vilified more generally as a racist intent on eliminating African Americans? And here’s another ugly truth behind Planned Parenthood: the disproportionate number of minorities this organization kills and how it sets up shop in poor neighborhoods. According to a report by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in 2012, far more African American babies were killed by abortion—31,328—than were born—24,758.Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in New York City, where my wife runs a pregnancy care center, 78 percent of the abortions in 2011 were to black and Hispanic children.By the way, one minister who is not going along is the redoubtable Walter Hoye of Oakland, California. Hoye notes that abortion kills more black Americans in three days than the Klan killed under Jim Crow in 86 years. That is the real legacy of Margaret Sanger, and Planned Parenthood. BEIJING (AP) — Families aching for closure after their relatives disappeared aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 last year vented deep frustration Thursday at differing statements from Malaysia and France over whether the finding of a plane part had been confirmed."Why the hell do you have one confirm and one not?" asked Sara Weeks of Christchurch, New Zealand. Her brother, Paul Weeks, was on the plane that disappeared March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing."Why not wait and get everybody on the same page so the families don't need to go through this turmoil?" she said.Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced early Thursday that a plane wing section found on the French island of Reunion was "conclusively confirmed" to be from Flight 370, saying he hoped the news would end "unspeakable" uncertainty. The announcement was in line with the Malaysian conclusion that the plane crashed in the Indian Ocean, killing all 239 people aboard.But French officials with custody of the wing part said only that there were strong indications the barnacle-encrusted part — known as a "flaperon" — was from the flight and that they would work further to try to confirm the finding."After 17 months, we need definite answers," Weeks said. "We need to progress, get answers, move toward further answers, and get some closure along the line."About two-thirds of the passengers were from China, and in Beijing, Xu Jinghong said she could not understand why Malaysian and French authorities did not make their statements together."I am very angry — so angry that my hands and feet are cold," Xu, 41, said in an interview early Thursday outside her downtown home. "The announcement was made without experts from France present. I don't understand how the procedure can be like this."The statement by Najib would appear to give the first strong physical evidence of a crash, which could put to rest several theories that many relatives have refused to rule out, including that the plane and its passengers were hijacked and intact in some still-unknown location.Irene Burrows, the 85-year-old mother of missing Australian passenger Rod Burrows, who was lost with his wife, Mary, said last year that she didn't expect the mystery to be solved in her lifetime. She said at the time: "All I just want is a bit of the plane. It's all I want to know — where they are."For her, Thursday's confirmation was a simple wish come true."We're quite pleased that it's been found," she said from her home in Biloela in northeastern Australia.However, for many relatives, any potential certainty was diluted by the word from Paris, where Deputy Prosecutor Serge Mackowiak said the "very strong conjectures" that the wing part was from the missing Boeing 777 still needed to be "confirmed by complementary analysis" that would begin later Thursday.It was unclear whether the mix-up was a result of miscommunication between the two countries, differing notions of the burden of proof, or whether Malaysian officials were overeager to send out some definitive signal for relatives of the missing.In any case, a full confirmation of the wing part wasn't likely to bring total closure for relatives, with the rest of the plane and the bodies still missing.Jiang Hui, whose mother was on board, said there was still a lack of evidence to prove that the plane crashed as was announced by Malaysian officials last year. After several hours, the group was invited into a closed-door talk with airline officials. They later went to Boeing offices but weren't allowed in.While confirming ocean-borne debris from the plane is an important threshold for many relatives, it will be difficult for some to fully come to terms with the disaster without seeing the body of their loved one, said Nancy Smyth, a University of Buffalo sociologist focusing on psychological trauma.The finding of the wing piece "is certainly a step toward closure," Smyth said, adding: "It is important not to think of closure as a check box, but more of a journey and process for people with a lot of layers.""So much of our grieving process involves physicality, such as seeing the body, and that's not present here, which makes it very difficult for the families to gain closure," she said.Melanie Antonio, whose husband was a Flight 370 flight attendant, said she wasn't sure how to feel."I'm numb, I'm not sad," she said in Kuala Lumpur. KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia said on Thursday paint color and maintenance-record matches proved that a piece of wing found on the shore of an Indian Ocean island was part of the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, which vanished without trace last year.Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said investigators on the French island of Reunion had collected more aircraft debris, including a plane window and aluminum foil, but there was no confirmation they also belonged to the missing plane.With the first trace of the plane confirmed, Malaysia has asked the governments of neighboring Mauritius and Madagascar to help widen the search area, he told reporters.Earlier, Prime Minister Najib Razak confirmed that the piece of debris was from the Boeing 777 airliner that was bound for Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 passengers and crew on board when it went missing."Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370," Najib said in a televised address.The airline described the find as "a major breakthrough".The first piece of direct evidence that the plane crashed in the sea closed a chapter in one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history.But exactly what happened remains unknown and Najib's announcement did not appear to represent any kind of resolution for the families of those on board, most of whom were Chinese.The fragment of wing known as a flaperon was flown to mainland France after being found last week covered in barnacles on a Reunion beach.Despite the Malaysian confirmation, prosecutors in France stopped short of declaring they were certain, saying only that there was a "very strong presumption".Deputy Paris Prosecutor Serge Mackowiak said this was based on technical data supplied by both the manufacturer and airline but gave no indication that experts had discovered a serial number or unique markings that would put the link beyond doubt.Representatives of manufacturer Boeing confirmed that the flaperon came from a 777 jet, he said, and Malaysia Airlines provided documentation of the missing aircraft.Mackowiak told reporters more analysis would be carried out on Thursday, and a fragment of luggage also found in Reunion would be examined by French police."We appreciate the French team and their support and respect their decision to continue with the verification," Liow said, adding that Malaysian experts were convinced the flaperon was from MH370 because a seal on the part matched a maintenance record and the paint was the same color.-SEARCH FOR CLUES-A group of families from China said French investigators and Boeing must also say definitively the wing piece was from the plane."We are not living in denial ... but we owe it to our loved ones not to declare them lost without 100 percent certainty!" the families said on their microblog.China's foreign ministry urged Malaysia to keep investigating and to "safeguard the legitimate rights and interests" of relatives.Investigators looking at the wing flap at an aeronautical facility in the French city of Toulouse are likely to start by putting slices of metal under a high-powered microscope, to see clues in its crystal structure about how it deformed on impact, said Hans Weber, president of TECOP International, Inc., an aerospace technology consulting firm.They would probably then "do a full physical examination, using ultrasonic analysis before they open it up to see if there's any internal damage", Weber said."That might take quite a while. France’s deputy prosecutor Serge Mackowiak announced Wednesday that there was a “very high probability” that a wing part – a flaperon – found July 29 on Reunion Island, a French overseas territory, did indeed come from the missing plane.And on Thursday, Malaysian authorities said window parts and seat cushions also had washed up on Reunion Island.Recommended: How safe is flying? But the French so far are proceeding cautiously with the news – unlike the Malaysian authorities, who said the wing debris “conclusively confirmed” it came from the aircraft – and have hesitated to provide any definite confirmation of the expert findings. As additional testing on the flaperon continues at DGA Techniques Aéronautiques in southwest France, the French have found themselves in a leading role in the crash investigation.But while Malaysian authorities head the international effort to find answers into the cause and details of the accident, some wonder how France’s independent judicial probe will integrate into the overall investigation. Could adding yet another expert inquiry delay offering concrete answers for victims’ families? France actually began a separate probe in March 2014, as it was entitled to do so after four of its citizens were declared to be among the 239 people on board flight MH370. However, the recent discovery of the flaperon on French soil mandated that France conduct an investigation under rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Three magistrates – specializing in terrorism and aviation accidents – were designated to launch the current judicial inquiry into the wing part.Philippe Julienne, a French aviation expert, says the French probe will focus solely on the technical aspect of the crash, looking at the serial and part number of the flaperon to verify a match with the missing plane. “They need to be 95 percent sure that this part is from the plane crash,” he says. Experts will also use the wing part to try to assess how the plane went down.CRITICISM OF MALAYSIAN AUTHORITIES-While both France’s Mr. Mackowiac and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak stressed the fact that Wednesday’s findings could help provide a resolution to families still waiting for answers on the fates of their loved ones, the final results of the overall inquiry into the crash could be years away. France, historically, has hesitated to go public with air safety expert findings: More than six years after the crash of Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, the criminal investigation is still under way.“The judicial team doesn’t want to be stampeded by false media representations of the accident,” says Francois Godement, a specialist in Asia and international relations and a professor at Sciences Po university in Paris. But if the final results of the flaperon findings could take some time, Malaysian authorities could potentially benefit from France’s help. ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt staged a show of international support on Thursday as it inaugurated a major extension of the Suez Canal which President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hopes will power an economic turnaround in the Arab world's most populous country.The former armed forces chief, who led a military takeover two years ago but ran for president as a civilian last year, told a ceremony attended by leaders of France, Russia, Arab and African states that Egypt would defeat terrorism.The $8 billion New Suez Canal project was completed in just one year instead of three on Sisi's orders, but economists and shipping analysts question whether there is sufficient traffic and east-west trade to meet its ambitious revenue targets."Work did not take place in normal circumstances, and these circumstances still exist and we are fighting them and we will defeat them," Sisi said after signing an order allowing ships to cross the new stretch of waterway."Egypt during this year stood against the most dangerous terrorist threat that would burn the world if it could."The canal expansion is the centerpiece of a grand agenda by Sisi to cement his tenure as the man who brought stability and prosperity to Egypt after he ousted elected Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Mursi in 2013 following mass protests.The spectacular inauguration was also intended to bolster his international standing in the presence of French President Francois Hollande, Russian Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev, King Abdullah of Jordan, the emir of Kuwait and the king of Bahrain. Beirut (AFP) - More than 240,000 people, including 12,000 children, have been killed in Syria's conflict which broke out in March 2011, a monitoring group said Thursday.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it has documented the deaths of 240,381 people, up from its tally of 230,618 announced on June 9.The latest toll compiled by the Britain-based group shows that 11,964 children were among 71,781 civilians killed in Syria.At least 88,616 regime forces were killed -- or one thirds all deaths documented by the Observatory -- including 50,570 soldiers and the rest allied fighters.The monitor, which relies on a wide network of sources on the ground, put the death toll for rebel fighters at 42,384 and said 34,375 foreign jihadists have also been killed in Syria.The identity of another 3,225 people killed in the conflict remains unknown, according to the Observatory.The fate of 30,000 people who have gone missing in Syria, including 20,000 said to be held in Syrian jails, was not documented in the toll.It also did not take into account the fate of thousands of loyalist forces held by rebel factions or by the Islamic State jihadist group.The Syrian conflict began with anti-government protests before spiralling into a multi-front war after a brutal regime crackdown.

Muscat (AFP) - Muscat and Damascus agreed to work together to end Syria's brutal war, official media reported, as the Syrian foreign minister Thursday made his first Gulf visit since the conflict erupted in 2011.Foreign Minister Walid Muallem met Oman's chief diplomat Yussef bin Alawi to discuss "several regional and international topics of common interest", the official Omani news agency ONA said.They agreed "that now is the time to unite the efforts to end this (Syrian) crisis", according to Syria's state news agency SANA."The two sides agreed to continue cooperation and coordination to achieve the shared goals of their peoples and governments," it said.Syrian daily Al-Watan daily, close to the regime in Damascus, pointed out that Muscat had not cut diplomatic and political ties with President Bashar al-Assad's government, unlike other Arab countries in the Gulf.It was Muallem's "first visit to an Arab state in nearly four years, at the official invitation of his Omani counterpart", the paper reported in announcing the visit.Al-Watan also wrote of a possible meeting in Muscat, a traditional mediator in the region, between top diplomats from Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia.Iran, along with Russia, is a key backer of Assad, while Saudi Arabia is a prominent supporter of the opposition and rebels fighting to topple his regime.On Wednesday, Muallem was in Tehran, where he met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.The Syrian minister also met with Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's deputy foreign minister and special representative to the Middle East.The visit to Tehran coincided with Iran's announcement of a new peace plan to bring an end to Syria's conflict, which has killed more than 230,000 people.

BEIRUT (AP) — The Islamic State group on Thursday seized a key town in central Syria following heavy clashes with President Bashar Assad's forces, in the militants' biggest advance since capturing the historic town of Palmyra in May, Syrian activists said.The heavily populated town of Qaryatain lies southwest of Palmyra, which is home to towering Roman ruins, and some 85 kilometers from Homs city. Its capture allows the IS group to link up areas under its control in and around Palmyra with areas in the eastern countryside of Qalamoun in Damascus province.The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the IS group seized the town Thursday after three suicide bombers targeted army checkpoints at the entrance the day before, setting off a fierce battle.Websites affiliated with the Islamic State group confirmed the militants had taken over Qaryatain. A Facebook page through which the IS posts news of its military activities carried photos that purported to show the fighting to "liberate" the town, including a tank allegedly seized from the Syrian army.Qaryatain lies midway between the cities of Homs, Palmyra and Damascus. Activists say it has a mixed population of around 40,000 Sunni Muslims and Christians, as well as thousands of internally displaced people who had fled from Homs.The IS group had suffered a string of military setbacks after capturing Palmyra. In June, Kurdish fighters and their local allies expelled IS from the key northern border town of Tal Abyad, cutting off a major supply route for the group.Late last month, Turkey began carrying out airstrikes against IS targets in Syria. Military reinforcements enter Yemen from Saudi Arabia-AFP-aug 6,15-yahoonews

Aden (AFP) - Saudi Arabia has sent new military equipment including tanks into Yemen to support loyalists fighting Iran-backed Huthi rebels, tribal and military sources said on Thursday."Dozens of tanks, armoured vehicles and personnel carriers, as well as hundreds of Yemeni soldiers trained in Saudi Arabia, arrived in Yemen overnight" via the Wadia border post in the north of the country, a Yemeni military source told AFP."These military reinforcements came from Saudi Arabia's Sharura region and are intended for the popular resistance and the national army," another military source said, referring to forces loyal to Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, currently in exile in Riyadh.Since March 26, a Saudi-led military coalition has supported the loyalists with air strikes to stop the advance of the Huthi rebels, who last year took over the capital Sanaa and pressed south into second city Aden earlier this year.Tribal sources told AFP that the reinforcements were headed towards the provinces of Marib, east of Sanaa, and Shabwa, to the southeast, "to expel the Huthis and their allies" from these two provinces, where heavy fighting has been ongoing.Pro-Hadi forces continue to gain ground in the south of the country after retaking Aden last month and seizing the country's largest airbase of Al-Anad to its north on Tuesday.This turnaround in the fighting coincided with the appearance on the battleground of modern military equipment that, according to military sources, the Saudi-led coalition had provided to Hadi's supporters.A military source on Monday reported the presence of "hundreds of soldiers from Gulf countries" that were members of the coalition in Aden, where they landed with "dozens of tanks and armoured vehicles" to "secure the city".Also on Thursday, pro- government forces and the rebels carried out a prisoner exchange, said the International Committee of the Red Cross, which monitored the operation.A Red Cross statement said seven Huthi rebels were transferred from Aden to Sanaa.They boarded a plane to Sanaa in return for the release of more than 20 southern pro-government fighters, the head of security at Aden airport, Colonel Ahmed al-Dulahi, told AFP.The ICRC also said that its president, Peter Maurer, would visit Yemen August 8-10 "to highlight the dire humanitarian situation in the country".The war in Yemen has killed nearly 4,000 people, half of them civilians, while 80 percent of the 21 million population needs aid and protection, the UN says.

Risk Iran might 'sanitize' Parchin before U.N. checks: U.S. think tank-Reuters-aug 6,15-yahoonews

VIENNA (Reuters) - A U.S. think tank said Iran might be cleaning up its Parchin military site, where some countries suspect experiments may have taken place in a possible atomic weapons program, but Iran denied this on Thursday.The U.S.-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) pointed to satellite images showing vehicles and container-like objects being moved at Parchin. Iran said this was part of road works in the area.ISIS said the images were taken after Iran signed a major deal with world powers to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.Such activity might complicate the work of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose job it is to judge whether Iran's past atomic activity had any military dimensions, including through access to Parchin."This renewed activity occurring after the signing of the (July 14 deal) raises obvious concerns that Iran is conducting further sanitization efforts to defeat IAEA verification," the Washington-based think tank said in a report."This renewed activity may be a last ditch effort to try to ensure that no incriminating evidence will be found," said ISIS, which was founded by a former IAEA nuclear inspector to bring scientific expertise to debates about nuclear weapons.Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York issued a statement saying it "strongly denies and rejects the baseless claims about the so-called clean-up operations in the Parchin Military Complex".It said there was construction work at Parchin to repair a road and denounced "the extensive vicious campaign at work ... to poison the positive environment at the global level.""The Islamic Republic of Iran.. has never had any military nuclear activity and has never been engaged in any unconventional act that would need a hasty cover-up," it added.U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters on Thursday he could not confirm the group's findings but that any clean up effort would be "cause for concern." VIENNA (AP) — Satellite imagery of an Iranian site possibly used for work on a nuclear weapon shows crates, trucks and construction that may be linked to a renewed attempt to clean up before an inspection by the U.N.'s nuclear monitor, a nonproliferation institute said Thursday.The International Atomic Energy Agency — the U.N. watchdog — has repeatedly cited previous evidence of possible attempts to sanitize the Parchin site. But the report by the Institute for Science and International Security is significant because the IAEA plans to visit the site soon as part of the deal between Iran and six world powers focused on limiting Iran's nuclear programs in exchange for the removal of economic sanctions.The institute cited commercial satellite images in an email to The Associated Press, saying they show "renewed activity" at the site.
